- 0:39Here's what's coming up on our busy program today.
- 0:43Trent, help me out. Lee Sterling.
- 0:45Lee Sterling. That's right, we'll start things
- 0:47off paramountsports.com bottom of the hour.
- 0:50He's got a handful of games that he will opine on.
- 0:53Look forward to catching Lee on a weekly basis.
- 0:55Yes, he's a handicapper, but he goes on record.
- 0:58He doesn't try to hide when he has his bad weeks.
- 1:00And if you're so inclined, you're welcome to jump aboard
- 1:03with Lee at Paramount Sports. Otherwise, just listen and take
- 1:06him with a grain of salt or go the other way.
- 1:08Whatever you'd want to do. But Lee Sterling will join us at
- 1:12the bottom of the hour on Thursdays now, right through the
- 1:14end of college football. Then Mitch Holtis, this is his
- 1:17final daily Chiefs training camp report.
- 1:20He will join us. Obviously Rasheed Rice will come
- 1:23up in the conversation, I'm guessing at some point with
- 1:25Mitch and they will get set. They'll be there.
- 1:28They'll be across. They'll be in Brazil by this
- 1:30time next week, right? Of course they would.
- 1:32The game's tomorrow night. We're a week from tomorrow
- 1:36night, so Mitch will join us and then in our number two, Bill
- 1:40Bender from the Sporting News. And what oh, Joe, Joe Stacy's
- 1:45going to be here. It is after all, the precipice.
- 1:49We are on it of week one in high school football.
- 1:51And Joe will join us at 1:30 to talk about their plans, him and
- 1:55his team on football Friday nights here on KX&O and maybe
- 1:59some of the teams to watch in the five A level or maybe drop
- 2:03down a class or two teams to watch in the area or throughout
- 2:06the state of Iowa. That coming up at 1:30.
- 2:09Trent will make some picks before we slide out of here at
- 2:122:00. So football is here.
- 2:15The bells ring out in the banners fly.
- 2:17Baseball was fun yesterday. I mean, it was OK yesterday.
- 2:22You don't need overselling. No, I'm not.
- 2:24I don't want to try Cubs again. Couldn't get the job done as
- 2:27they're they're not going to catch the Brewers.
- 2:29They did have a, you know, glimmer of hope maybe, but that
- 2:31seemingly has gone out the window.
- 2:33Justin Turner betting in the cleanup spot.
- 2:35What is going on here? I mean, he shouldn't meet me on
- 2:37the team. Let's be perfectly honest.
- 2:39I don't get it. He's on the team because he
- 2:41organizes players meals when they're on the road.
- 2:43Let somebody else handle that, right?
- 2:46I mean, you're taking up a roster spot.
- 2:48This guy's had Curries 40 years old.
- 2:50I get it. He doesn't want to leave.
- 2:52It's a wonderful job. It must be.
- 2:54You mean 5 star hotels and private jets and a per diem that
- 2:58you can't spend and plus what you're making on top of all of?
- 3:03That. And you're a Major League
- 3:05player, you never want it to end.
- 3:07But Justin Turner, it's time. It was your overdue time.
- 3:10And he's batting 4th. But you can't kill him for it.
- 3:13I mean, he didn't put himself on the.
- 3:14I agree with you. I agree with you.
- 3:16And yes, Craig counsel Batson 4th, Batson 4th and gets paid $8
- 3:20million, wears a mask as he goes to the bank to cash his check.
- 3:24You got a dartboard there. You do a better job putting a
- 3:26line up together. Justin Turner in the.
- 3:29Clean up spot. Well, you know what was coming.
- 3:30They had the bases. Of course not.
- 3:32You know who's coming 643? Yeah, I agree.
- 3:37It's not his fault. It's not his fault.
- 3:39He never should have put on on the team in the 1st place.
- 3:41Yeah, he's had two big hits, big deal, right?
- 3:44He had a game-winning run on a double and likewise on a home
- 3:47run. Big deal.
- 3:48A lot of guys could do that, bring somebody up, but by
- 3:51Sterosop, just somebody that can hit the ball.
- 3:54It's not him. It's not.
- 3:55It's not him for sure. He organizes the team dinners.
- 4:00That just drives me crazy. This is why he's on the team.
- 4:05Anyways, enough about that. I'm in a good mood looking at
- 4:09the football here tonight. So I sitting here BS with Scott
- 4:12Knock prior to the game. Now prior to the show rather and
- 4:16Scott Knock, who was on Dan McCartney staff in 2000 when
- 4:18they won the inside bowl. That team, by the way, is
- 4:21getting honoured this weekend at Jack Trice.
- 4:24They're all back, or as many of them as can come back are making
- 4:28it back. McCartney and his team, which
- 4:30was pretty cool. Do you remember that era when
- 4:32they finally won the inside bowl and finally won a bowl game and
- 4:34what it meant? It kind of was.
- 4:37Now remember, I was also in eastern Iowa.
- 4:39Yeah, So it didn't mean as much. It didn't mean as much.
- 4:41I get it. But it was, it was a big deal.
- 4:44It it felt like it was, you know.
- 4:46They haven't done it. They finally checked the box and
- 4:50at that time it seemingly a corner was being turned as far
- 4:53as Iowa State athletics and that kind of culminated it.
- 4:57So that team's going to be here. But that's not what I would talk
- 4:59about. I asked him, have you seen, have
- 5:04you seen the availability report for this week?
- 5:06I post come out yesterday. I didn't see it.
- 5:08I've been scouring looking. For it Oh yeah, that's right,
- 5:10they're supposed to because of the West Coast schools, though,
- 5:12or the. We had to wait.
- 5:13Had to wait until 9:00 because they have practice in the
- 5:16afternoon, right? You're going to wait to get
- 5:18through, right? 9:00 Central time is when.
- 5:20You're supposed to have released them.
- 5:22And so I kept, you know, refreshed because I want to see
- 5:24about Brazina. I like Brazina.
- 5:26I want to see, is he hurt? Is he going to play?
- 5:28What's the situation there? I like him as a player.
- 5:31I want to see him on the field. He says to me, Scott Knox says
- 5:34to me, there's not no availability report this week.
- 5:38This is conference games only. Oh.
- 5:41So this will not be something that has to be instituted next
- 5:44week for side Hawk. Ding Ding, Ding, wow.
- 5:47You know what? In our euphoria that the
- 5:51conference finally got something right, we didn't read the fine
- 5:56print. For conference games.
- 6:01Publicly provide player ability reports for all conference games
- 6:05in football, basketball, men's and women's.
- 6:10Come on, wow, what? What would be the reasoning for
- 6:16not doing it every week? And the only reason we got one
- 6:19last week it because obviously it was a conference game.
- 6:23Just while we're just patting them on the back, embracing the
- 6:27Big 12 for being a pioneer, for being a leader.
- 6:32We didn't read the fine print. Bad work out of us.
- 6:35I guess, yeah. Because did you hear anybody
- 6:37bring this up? No, not, not just Miller and
- 6:40Condon. No, it's across the board.
- 6:43Nobody picked up on this. Nobody picked up on this as far
- 6:45as well, Scott Knock did. So we got a huge match up
- 6:48tomorrow. Auburn, Baylor.
- 6:50Nope. Baylor's going to keep it to
- 6:52themselves. Yeah, no, I don't know.
- 6:55Does the SE that last year at Psy Hawk I will put out what?
- 6:58He did, absolutely. Because for in the Big 10, it's
- 7:01every game. It's every game, right?
- 7:03And we'll get that 90 minutes before, yes I will.
- 7:06Albany on Saturday. Just when you think.
- 7:10You got a little step forward, so how much time did you waste
- 7:15searching? Well, I didn't.
- 7:16I'm not going to rely and say I was, you know, constantly
- 7:18refreshing. Well, I know your personality
- 7:20though, and when something gets in your head, it's difficult for
- 7:24you to get that bug out. Well, I kept I I probably
- 7:27checked two or three times before I turned.
- 7:29I turned in last night because again, I like Brazina.
- 7:32I hope he plays every game. I think they've got something
- 7:35there in Iowa State. I believe they do.
- 7:38And I was disappointed when he got hurt and couldn't return to
- 7:40the field. I, you know, here we go again.
- 7:43I just you just wonder if this kids going to be one of these
- 7:45kids that you know, every year can't you can't see him reach
- 7:50his potential because injuries unfortunately are not allowing
- 7:53him to do so. So I'm not saying it's season
- 7:55ending, but I hope that's not the case.
- 7:58But anyways, so. That we got you.
- 8:01That did get me and I think it got a lot of.
- 8:04People, we got Justin Turner, we got entry reports.
- 8:06What else is pissing you off today, Miller?
- 8:08No, no, no. I'm in a good mood.
- 8:09OK? I'm in a good mood.
- 8:10I hate people think that I'm a curmudgeon.
- 8:13I'm not. I'm old.
- 8:14I'll give you that. If that goes with being a
- 8:16curmudgeon. OK, I checked that box.
- 8:20I do want to talk about this because there's such a there's
- 8:22such a massive weekend for college football and I'm looking
- 8:25at, you know, a number of things, Heisman odds and and the
- 8:28big games and the new quarterbacks and blah, blah,
- 8:31blah. Are we sure about Arch Manning?
- 8:34No, absolutely not. He's athletic.
- 8:37He's got the right last. Name he can run.
- 8:38Yes he can, but we saw that a year ago.
- 8:41But no absolute with the lack of experience.
- 8:44That's just it. How he's a betting favor in the
- 8:47Heisman market is dumb. I I agree with you
- 8:50wholeheartedly. I mean, what would it take for
- 8:52you? And you don't wager on it
- 8:53because you're a voter. But if you still were, what
- 8:57would it take for you to? Yeah, I'm going to put down, I'm
- 9:00going to put down a unit on Arch to win the Heisman.
- 9:03Well, I don't think I would have got there because I would have
- 9:05done my research in advance because.
- 9:07Look at 25 to 131, that's kind of the range that OK, I'd be
- 9:11willing to jump in. There's some shots that have
- 9:14them, like plus 250. What a dust mire that's been
- 9:16there, done that, Klubnik that's been there, done that.
- 9:18Absolutely right. Some people say Beck, because
- 9:21he's been there, done that. I'm not one of them.
- 9:23Texas is super talented. Absolutely super talented.
- 9:26Trenty played one game last year against an opponent with a
- 9:29pulse, and I'm not sure you can say that's true about
- 9:31Mississippi State. They're an SEC opponent.
- 9:34He was 26 out of 31325. That's pretty good.
- 9:38But then as Georgie was 3 for six, Florida threw the ball 6
- 9:41times. That was it.
- 9:43His season ended on the 9th of November and he couldn't.
- 9:46He couldn't beat out Quinn Yours, who was drafted in the
- 9:49seventh round. That's what Spurrier said.
- 9:53Spurrier said it. Same thing.
- 9:54Are we sure he couldn't beat out a 7th rounder?
- 9:56Did he say that? Yeah.
- 9:58Spurrier's great. Yeah, he is.
- 9:59Where did you hear that? It was like a month ago, I think
- 10:01it was around maybe SCC media days, somebody was interviewing
- 10:04him and he said the exact same thing, right?
- 10:07You can't be sure. We anticipate.
- 10:10Just because he's a Manning. But he walks into an
- 10:13environment. I've told you this before, I've
- 10:15been to four SEC stadiums, 4 Big 12 stadiums, all the original
- 10:20Big 10 stadiums. There is not a louder
- 10:23environment that I've been in than the Shoe.
- 10:25I've been there twice and that for my money, I've sat at the 50
- 10:29yard line for Alabama, Tennessee, at Bryant Denny and
- 10:32it is nothing compared to Columbus.
- 10:36That place shakes the loudness. The big house is nothing Big
- 10:40house, just big. Yeah.
- 10:41Nice escapes, right? Yeah, Yeah.
- 10:43It's sunken in and that's not loud.
- 10:45Penn State super loud too, yeah. Was there No 9?
- 10:48And what are? They what a year to be there.
- 10:50That opening touchdown that they hit after I upset him the year
- 10:53before, that place was shaking. Still, for my money, number one
- 10:57is the shoe. Good luck Arch.
- 10:59That's what I'm thinking too. And this number, I mean, I, I
- 11:02think you, you almost have to bet Ohio State for that very
- 11:04reason. So where's the steam coming
- 11:06from? Is it a Julian saying question?
- 11:09Because him and what? Klein, Holtz.
- 11:11Yeah, it it was. It was a battle.
- 11:13It went we. Detold at Las Vegas, in Las
- 11:15Vegas, the Big 10 media guy, remember the guy that covers
- 11:17Ohio State for 24/7 or one of those?
- 11:20He said to us guys, I'm not making this up.
- 11:23This is a real battle. Ah, come on, it's Sage John.
- 11:27Ultimately, he's good. He said.
- 11:29Ultimately he thinks saying will prevail, but this is not a
- 11:31foregone conclusion. This cat said that.
- 11:33I can't think of his name, so it's it's absolutely was legit.
- 11:39But man, oh man, this is the presumptive number one choice in
- 11:42the next year's NFL draft. Based on what?
- 11:46Nothing that we've really seen. Right, he might.
- 11:49Come on, just tear it up. He could.
- 11:50He could tear it up, but based on the body of work, that's what
- 11:54we're betting on at this point. No, thank you.
- 11:57So are you got the Buckeye circled?
- 11:59It sounds like coming up for this.
- 12:00I do for that very reason, yeah. For that very reason you've been
- 12:04telling me about the stadium, yes, and how loud it is and
- 12:08where it ranks for you. And then when he did, when you
- 12:11dig into what he what he's done to get this anointed status that
- 12:15he's for whatever reason has, I mean, tap the brakes a little
- 12:19bit, folks. Mississippi State was God awful,
- 12:21God awful. Couldn't be no Quinn yours.
- 12:24We have a night tonight. I mean, it's so much better than
- 12:28what we get Friday outside of Auburn, Baylor.
- 12:30Yeah, see, I like a couple of Friday games.
- 12:31There's two, there's two big two Big 12 games at the same time.
- 12:35It's Colorado place tomorrow. Colorado, Georgia.
- 12:37Yeah, I like those two, but they're both on the, well, the
- 12:41Colorado was on the on the clone schedule anyways.
- 12:43Boise and South Florida open it up.
- 12:46That steam continues. And you.
- 12:47Know why? And you know why the steam is?
- 12:49It's actually because of the steam.
- 12:51It's the weather. It's the humidity and, and
- 12:54listening to somebody that lives down there and says that they've
- 12:57lived there for 30 years, it's never been this hot and this
- 13:00humid at this time of year. Never.
- 13:02So boy, that's what Boise's walking into.
- 13:04So I guess that's the reason for the number coming back.
- 13:07I don't know. Do you think Nebraska's walking
- 13:09into it? We talked with SIP yesterday.
- 13:11Into a into a trap? Yeah.
- 13:13Why do you say that? I've.
- 13:15Told you. There's just something about
- 13:16this Cincinnati team that I think adorable team, they're OK.
- 13:22What's the number is it? It's under a touch 6 1/2 pretty
- 13:25much across the board. P Yeah.
- 13:28Since because everybody has Nebraska here, everybody expects
- 13:31the the step forward, but we've. Played.
- 13:34It's Year 3. We've played this song and
- 13:36danced so many times with Nebraska for the last two
- 13:38decades. They go over to Ireland.
- 13:41Oh, it's crappy Northwestern team.
- 13:42Jesus. It was the only game that
- 13:45Northwestern won on. They didn't win one in no
- 13:48American soil. No, they had to do it in
- 13:50Ireland. I, I just maybe it's history,
- 13:53recent history that is playing a part of it.
- 13:56But. And you hope they get beat.
- 13:58I mean, deep down, you, you can't stand Nebraska.
- 14:02That's not fair. You hate.
- 14:04Nebraska. Yeah, I hate Nebraska.
- 14:05Yeah, they're fan base. There's it's not just the fan
- 14:08base, it's their media that bothers me too.
- 14:11Penn State media, Nebraska media.
- 14:12Those are the two that bother me more than anything.
- 14:15Do you think they're outposts around the Big 10 that have the
- 14:17same feelings about Iowa media? Iowa Media.
- 14:20I don't know. You don't hear the stories of
- 14:23cheering in the press box like you do in.
- 14:24Nebraska. No, you don't, thankfully.
- 14:27You don't have the whining like the Penn State media about
- 14:29everything. See, I don't I, I, I hear that
- 14:31from Franklin so. I and and he's a whiner on top
- 14:34of it. Maybe that's where they get it
- 14:35from. Maybe.
- 14:36It's I don't think you'd get that from Iowa media.
- 14:41Do you see that the chip? Really.
- 14:43I see a lot of people criticize Doc.
- 14:45Well, I don't know why. I don't either.
- 14:49I don't either. I don't see, I don't think.
- 14:50Like how gets those arrows shot at them?
- 14:52Criticism just comes with the territory.
- 14:55Sure. And Doc also punches back.
- 14:57Yeah, there are a lot of people. Just, I know I love that about
- 14:59him. But to your point about it, it's
- 15:02it's the old guard at the Omaha World Herald that I think has
- 15:07has paved the way for the reputation that the entire media
- 15:11does. Yeah, I don't think SIP fits
- 15:13into that. Category.
- 15:16He's not as bad as the most of them.
- 15:18No, he's, I mean, he's kind of guarded and if he says
- 15:21something, he's willing to tap the brakes a little bit.
- 15:25But some of the old guys, Chatelle and Barfnick, there's a
- 15:31couple other guys over there that I should remember their
- 15:33names. But yeah, that's they seemingly
- 15:36were cheerleaders. Yeah.
- 15:38They weren't a lot of weight. But here's the thing, though,
- 15:40right? I mean, good times sell
- 15:42newspapers. Well, they haven't had a good
- 15:44time since. That's true.
- 15:45Look what Look what's happened. The newspaper business didn't
- 15:47take. That was the reason.
- 15:48I think that's it, right? We got to the bottom of it
- 15:50today. The reason newspapers have
- 15:52failed is because Nebraska football better.
- 15:55But you know what it is and, and it's, it's the same here on, on
- 15:59talk shows, on message boards. People don't want to read bad
- 16:03news. You know, you can't be critical
- 16:05of my team. What do you know?
- 16:07I'm never going to listen to you again, never going to read you
- 16:09again, I'm going to cancel my subscription, blah, blah, blah.
- 16:11Heard it a million times, right? So you kind of got to be
- 16:15positive now in some respects. Don't have to noon to two.
- 16:20No you don't, that's for sure. We will take a time out.
- 16:24Lee Sterling is going to join us.
- 16:26Have you looked at the games? Are they all tonight?
- 16:28Did you look? At Lee's Games for tonight.
- 16:30Lee's games for tonight, is he going to pine on all college?
- 16:33Hopefully it's the whole weekend.
- 16:35Where's this? I'm looking for the.
- 16:36E-mail. I got it right here.
- 16:39I got it except it's too small. I'm going to need my magnifier.
- 16:42Well, we got games. Oh, we do.
- 16:44We got Wisconsin, Auburn, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Ohio State and
- 16:47Minnesota games, so a couple of them tonight.
- 16:49A lot of steam on Buffalo trend, a lot of steam on Buffalo to
- 16:52take on the Gophers here tonight as the Gophers in their
- 16:57traditional Thursday night opener.
- 16:59It goes back over 10 years. That long that.
- 17:02That long, which is, I mean, I guess the fan base is accepting
- 17:05of it. Personally, I like it.
- 17:08I like the fact we're going to see some Big 10, some Big 12
- 17:10action on display tonight. All right, we'll take the time
- 17:13out. We'll come back.
- 17:14Lee Sterling will join us toward the bottom of the hour.
- 17:16Mitch Holtis is with us in our number one.
- 17:18Bill Bender covers college football for The Sporting News.
- 17:21Where do you think he'll be on Saturday?
- 17:23Just down the road in Columbus. Yeah, that'll be a pretty easy
- 17:26trip for. Him absolutely what's the get in
- 17:28price? Have you seen Prices I.
- 17:30Haven't now that you've mentioned that.
- 17:31I believe it's, I mean, Texas fans got to travel, right?
- 17:33Yes, absolutely. You would think so this.
- 17:35Would be a This would be a tough ticket.
- 17:37Yeah, but they're going to play again in January.
- 17:39Yeah, no problem. Do you think?
- 17:41We had it last year in the semifinals.
- 17:43Yeah, I'm not as high in Texas as others.
- 17:47And it's the arch question that you opened with today.
- 17:49I I have those same kind of questions that I have.
- 17:51Where are you on Alabama? I love them.
- 17:53You really do love that defense A.
- 17:55Lot of people do it. Ty Simpson.
- 17:58We'll see. He's out right tomorrow, he's
- 18:00the D tackle. No, no, Ty Simpson.
- 18:02Oh, it's a new quarterback. Yeah, Right, right, right.
- 18:04His running back is out. Yes.
- 18:06Jam. I'm not sure his name.
- 18:08Jim Harris Jam. Something Yeah, the starting
- 18:11running back and the starting D tackle are both out tomorrow.
- 18:13I got some Bama tickets to win it all, to win the SEC Got a
- 18:16couple of those in the back pocket.
- 18:18So yeah, I'm invested. The defense, I think is going to
- 18:20be outstanding. I believe in Caitlin Devore too.
- 18:23Year 2. Culture fit, it's weird, it's
- 18:26different guy from Sioux Falls by way of what he did in his
- 18:30career, Fresno and then up to Washington.
- 18:32But I believe in him. I I think also getting his OC is
- 18:36going to help a lot too. Getting that back.
- 18:38I think Bama's going to be really good.
- 18:40And how about that Bama under the radar for once in a season?
- 18:44Love it and I don't and I don't recall and maybe he did when
- 18:47we've had Bama on taking a look at the SEC etcetera.
- 18:51I'm not sure does he love him? Well, I guess we'll ask him
- 18:53tomorrow when he joins us. All right Lee Sterling is coming
- 18:56up. Nicholtis will also join us.
- 18:59Bill Bender covers college football for the Sporting News
- 19:02and Joe Stacy week number one of high school football tomorrow.
- 19:06Joe's got a a handful of correspondence that will be
- 19:10fanning out around central Iowa and I'm sure he'll have call
- 19:13insurance from other parts around the state as well.
- 19:17But just we'll take we'll take a look at Joe or take a listen to
- 19:21Joe rather about 1:30. All right, a couple of calls
- 19:23real quick and then we will move on.
- 19:26Let's get Todd and then we'll get to Mike.
- 19:27Todd, welcome to the program. Todd, how are you?
- 19:31Good. How are you guys?
- 19:32Good. What's up, man?
- 19:34Hey, I'm not a fan of OPJ up there in Minnesota, but the
- 19:37Thursday Night Football game to open the season is probably one
- 19:41of the smartest things I think a college coach could do.
- 19:45You're really not going to. There's nothing that's really
- 19:47going to happen in in the next two days that you already don't
- 19:49have installed, that you already haven't prepared for in the
- 19:53preseason. And the team will improve the
- 19:55most from Week 1 to Week 2. You're giving your guys two
- 20:00extra days of. Prep for week. 22 extra days to
- 20:03get help and you get to get a set of eyeballs on the game, the
- 20:08actual game, the flow of the game.
- 20:10Not film, not cut breakdown, but the actual flow of the game.
- 20:14And if I was a head football coach, I would have a first
- 20:17game, Thursday Night Foot game every single year.
- 20:20No, yeah. Thank you, Todd.
- 20:21Appreciate the call. That's kind of why I thought
- 20:23South Dakota would be a pain in the you know what for Iowa State
- 20:26because they got to sit back and watch, but now I'm not so sure.
- 20:28Yeah, I was impressed by Iowa State, especially, especially
- 20:34the adjustments that they made. What of the the loser?
- 20:37Canyon that will come to you right away.
- 20:39The loser talk that we hear every year.
- 20:40Well, we won the box score. You lost the game, won the box
- 20:43score. And I saw plenty of that.
- 20:47You got a fumble on the 1 yard line, yet another race.
- 20:49Stop playing on the 1 yard line. Knock it off with the box score
- 20:52crap. You know that that easily could
- 20:54have been a blowout. Yeah, it's true.
- 20:56The box score stuff just drives me crazy.
- 20:58Yes, there are certain times that you look at the box score.
- 21:00Yes, the right team doesn't win, but it's such a loser mentality.
- 21:03Come on, Casey. Let's get Mike real quick.
- 21:05Mike, how are you? Welcome to the show.
- 21:07What's on your mind, Mike? Thanks for taking my call guys.
- 21:10I need to change the subject from baseball and football, but
- 21:13real earth breaking news today. I don't know if you heard it,
- 21:16but getting to GM McCoy from West Des Moines won the US
- 21:21Senior Amateur Championship today.
- 21:24He becomes the first player in history to win both the US
- 21:28Amateur and the US Mid Amateur. And not only that, we had two
- 21:34other players made the final 16 for the Senior Amateur.
- 21:37I believe Joe Palmer and Gene Mccommer is dealing.
- 21:42With. Yeah, and Gene Elliott.
- 21:44So we have representation in the tournament from the state of
- 21:48Iowa and a great job that Chad Pitts and all the people at the
- 21:51Iowa Golf Association are doing. And we got some great young
- 21:54players too. You don't have just have to be
- 21:55an old fart to play good in Iowa.
- 21:57So, Mike, enjoy the show, guys. I want to let you know that.
- 22:01I appreciate you changing. With all the guy.
- 22:02Absolutely. I appreciate you changing the
- 22:04subject and we're going to give those guys their due.
- 22:06Thank you, Mike. Appreciate that.
- 22:08I. Heard nothing but great things
- 22:09is about Mike McCoy too and in the golf community and what he
- 22:11has met. So big congratulations there.
- 22:14That is a big win and a. Historic.
- 22:16And how about Joe Palmer? Yes, I.
- 22:18Haven't seen Joe in a. While Palmer's Deli, yes, I wish
- 22:21they wouldn't have closed up shop in Ankeny.
- 22:23Oh yeah, yeah, I wish they would.
- 22:24We got this one right around. The no I know I like it there,
- 22:26but the one in Ankeny was it was perfect spot.
- 22:28But Ankeny, everything's good in Ankeny I.
- 22:30Guess. And you know what the best part
- 22:32about it was? It wasn't on Delaware.
- 22:35That's a nightmare. Oh, it's a nightmare.
- 22:38Millery Condon, least early, next underway on a Thursday.
- 22:41It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:51I just passed 12:30 on a Thursday.
- 22:54Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever you're
- 22:57listening in the state of Iowa, grateful that you are.
- 23:00We will take you until 2O clock. Voice of the Chiefs, Mitch
- 23:03Holtis joining us coming up in about 15 minutes.
- 23:06The Chiefs vacate Arrowhead and in come the Huskers and the
- 23:10Bearcats tonight. We'll get to that one.
- 23:12Lee Sterling, paramountsports.com, he joins
- 23:14us. Got a handful of games to opine
- 23:16on tonight. Also his game of the week, which
- 23:19coincidentally is also tonight. We'll get to that.
- 23:22You ready to go, Lee Sterling? I am.
- 23:25I am. It's this is the day we've all
- 23:28been waiting for. And we've got you guys got a
- 23:31game starts at 4:30. Yes, Sir.
- 23:34State in South Florida. So I get invited to a party this
- 23:37weekend. On Saturday night, my wife
- 23:40looked at me and she goes, I guess we're sending a nice
- 23:43parting gift, right? I'm like, yeah.
- 23:46Football's here. This.
- 23:47Is real quick because you're based in the state of Florida.
- 23:51There's there's a lot of steam on this Boise State line South
- 23:53Florida getting a lot of love and apparently Lee it's based on
- 23:57the fact that it's hot and it's humid and it hasn't been like
- 24:01that maybe in two decades. I'm told the humidity is just
- 24:04unbearable. Do you think that's what's
- 24:06moving the point spread as much as it is?
- 24:08How bad is it? My dog doesn't even make it way
- 24:12down the block. So it's, it's, it's, it is
- 24:15brutal. You go out anytime after like 10
- 24:18in the morning until like 8:00 at night.
- 24:20It's it's just they should have moved this game to later in the
- 24:23night, But it it should be an advance.
- 24:25What's crazy is, you know, South Florida has started games, a lot
- 24:30of games strong and just not finished game.
- 24:32So I mean, they're going to try to go, you know, real fast here
- 24:36in this game. And we'll see if if if they can
- 24:39hold up through four quarters, But I think it certainly should
- 24:42be an advantage for South Florida who looks like finally
- 24:45might have some some depth here. Well, we've had some
- 24:48disagreement here on this show on the Wisconsin Badgers this
- 24:51season. Incredibly difficult schedule.
- 24:53Not the case of week number one against Miami of Ohio Tonight,
- 24:56the Badgers laying 17 1/2 against the RedHawks.
- 25:00Yeah. And and I think that they'll be
- 25:02a little bit better, but still you know they they few stand out
- 25:06receivers. They're the running game has
- 25:08been slipping. They they're two and five
- 25:12against the spread in non conference games under fickle.
- 25:16It's a good thing in my Ohio starting offensive line and
- 25:19skilled position group is is practically brand new here.
- 25:22But you know, breaking a new quarterback, Billy Edwards,
- 25:25who's decent, I don't think he's a world breaker.
- 25:28Also a new offensive coordinator, Jeff Grimes.
- 25:30But Miami of Ohio, you know, they usually come to play for
- 25:33these games. And if they're in it, they'll
- 25:35keep their starters. And they're 21 and 21 the last
- 25:3810 years as a road dog. I think the lines are a little
- 25:40high. I think Wisconsin wins 2816 but
- 25:44Miami of Ohio covers. Good stuff.
- 25:45Well, here's a here's a real interesting game.
- 25:48SEC versus Big 12, Auburn on the road.
- 25:50A 2 1/2 point favorite against those Baylor Bears?
- 25:53Lee Sterling. Well, Baylor returns 18 players.
- 25:57A lot of people are excited about that, but look at their
- 25:59schedule. They didn't beat anyone and
- 26:01normally teams that win 8-9 games, they've got 3035 sacks.
- 26:05They only had 23 sacks. Their defense gave up 35.5 times
- 26:09last year. I think that Jackson Arnold
- 26:12might show out pretty good here. He had no offensive line
- 26:15receivers last year. Auburn in my opinion has top
- 26:17five receiving core and they're going against the Baylor pass
- 26:21defense. It was ranked 60th last year,
- 26:23might even be worse this year. Auburn, I think they are the
- 26:26right side, they're the right team Is favored here 3123.
- 26:29It'll lay it with the Tigers. Let's go next.
- 26:32Well, we know your affinity for EU Time to dust off those
- 26:34Catholics versus Convicts shirts.
- 26:36It's Miami. It's Notre Dame.
- 26:38What do you got in this one? The Irish favored by 2 1/2.
- 26:42Well, the place is going to be jumping.
- 26:43I mean, you you turn on the TV most games you see 25,000 empty
- 26:46seats, but it's going to be 65,000 plus.
- 26:50And if you just watch some of the interviews from these Notre
- 26:53Dame kids who played in that 2017 game, they'll tell you it
- 26:57was probably the toughest venue they ever played in.
- 26:59I mean, you play a night game in Miami in that place where they
- 27:02have looks like, you know, old Texas Stadium where the the
- 27:07sound just reverberates and people are drinking.
- 27:10They're opening up the gates at 8:00 in the morning, tailgating
- 27:13for the 730 start Now. Miami's going to be different.
- 27:17Carson Beck, a lot different than Cam Ward, not going to run
- 27:20around as much but going to go more with power football.
- 27:23But they say he's 100%. They have a top five offensive
- 27:27line and a really good not set, maybe 3.
- 27:31The trio, running backs, receivers aren't quite there,
- 27:33but I think it's the defense. It's going to show such, such
- 27:38better play. Last year they couldn't stop
- 27:40anyone. They brought in Corey Heatherman
- 27:42from Minnesota who did a great job with mediocre talent there.
- 27:46So I think that might be their MVPI.
- 27:48Think CJ Carr is watching the spring game for the Irish?
- 27:51He looks good. That's why they didn't go in the
- 27:53transfer portal. But do you want to start a kid
- 27:56off his first snaps ever in college football at Miami?
- 28:00No siree, wrong team favorite Miami 2320.
- 28:04The only caveat? Watch the weather.
- 28:06There's a chance it might be raining for 48 hours straight.
- 28:10If that's the case, maybe look to the under under 51 1/2 total
- 28:14points. Good stuff, sloppy contagion,
- 28:16and there's been a lot of steam certainly on that.
- 28:18Has there been late game tonight?
- 28:20Late 8:00 our time. It's at Arrowhead Stadium where
- 28:23it'll be, I'm told, from Stephen Sipple over in Nebraska, 90%
- 28:27Husker fans in the building. Huskers just under a touchdown
- 28:31favorite over the Big 12 Cincinnati Bearcats.
- 28:34I think he think he's understating it'll, I think to
- 28:37be about 92.6% Nebraska fans. But yeah, it's the Big Red.
- 28:43They travel here and, and I love what they did late in the year,
- 28:464 games to go, brought in Dana Holgerson.
- 28:49You know, he wasn't a great head coach, but look what he did as
- 28:51an offensive coordinator. He brought an Oklahoma State
- 28:54team one year from 70th and yards per game to #3 first year
- 28:58West Virginia brought the Mountaineers to winning the Big
- 29:02East championship and playing in the Orange Bowl.
- 29:04Just much better as an offensive coordinator than head coach.
- 29:07And Nebraska also wear top 20 recruiting class and transfer
- 29:12class, which they haven't done a long, long time.
- 29:14So Cincinnati just didn't have the game Breakers on offense.
- 29:17They need too many long methodical drives.
- 29:20They turn the ball over, commit too many dump penalties here.
- 29:24And they're 5 and 15 straight up versus power conference team.
- 29:27And Scott Satterfield's two season here.
- 29:29They need a breakthrough. Not happening tonight.
- 29:32Nebraska 30 to 20. Game of the Week Ohio State,
- 29:35Texas #1 versus #2 in the coaches poll.
- 29:38Buckeyes in the Shoe. A2 point choice.
- 29:41Yeah, Ohio State won that game 2814 and semifinal last year.
- 29:45But let's look deeper at that game.
- 29:47They Texas was knocking on the door 1st and goal from the one
- 29:50down 7 points less than 4 minutes ago and that got gun paw
- 29:56sweep had to be one of the worst goals ever.
- 29:58But even on top of that, I mean they were able to hang in the
- 30:03game without their top 2 receivers or top receiver was
- 30:06hurt before the playoffs or their best receiver at the time
- 30:09was hurt early in that game. Now some things have changed.
- 30:13Even though the game's being played in the horseshoe of Ohio
- 30:16State will be without 7 or top 9 tacklers from last year.
- 30:19No Jack Sawyer to rescue them here.
- 30:22Got Arch Manning the matchup versus Julian saying and I think
- 30:25that's a mismatch. They're saying from what I hear
- 30:28is not look good in fall camp and Texas also returns both of
- 30:31their coordinators. They've been there for five
- 30:33years and 40 acres and both Ohio State coordinators are new here.
- 30:37I think in every position except for receiver, Texas is better.
- 30:42Wrong team favor Texas outright 2420.
- 30:45Bonus wrong team favorite in week number one with the
- 30:48Sterling your game of the week. It's tonight Lee Minnesota.
- 30:51They're the curtains going up in the Twin Cities, the 17 8 1/2
- 30:55point favorite over Buffalo, a lot of steam on Buffalo's The
- 30:59Game of the Week. If the audience wants more
- 31:01information on this game. How can they reach you?
- 31:04All they need to do is go to paramountsports.com if they want

- 32:10Join the weekend, Lee. We'll talk to you next week.
- 32:12Thank you. Thanks guys.
- 32:14Yep, good to talk to you. Elise Sterling,
- 32:15paramountsports.com, Mitch Holtis next on the Chiefs.
- 32:19Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:24Hi Miller and Condon. Welcome back.
- 32:26Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller, our
- 32:29final daily Chiefs training camp report.
- 32:31Can thank the Donaldsons Papa John throughout the state of
- 32:34Iowa enough for making this possible throughout the month of
- 32:38August. And Lee joins us for the final
- 32:40time and then he'll join us. Lee Mitch joins us for the Lee
- 32:43Sterling was just with us. Mitch better for the mistake.
- 32:46But Mitch will join Us Weekly during the regular season with
- 32:49the exception of the bye week and he is back with us.
- 32:53When do you guys leave? First of all, Mitch, when do you
- 32:55guys get on the big bird and travel all those hours to get
- 32:59there? Is it Tuesday or will you leave
- 33:00Monday? We'll leave Wednesday, actually.
- 33:04Yeah, Yep, Yep. And it's 11 hour flight, you
- 33:06lose 2 hours. Sao Paulo's actually a hour
- 33:11ahead of like New York time. So yeah, it's going to be, and
- 33:17we've sent a lot of our equipment already down there.
- 33:20So yeah, it's a, it's a task I don't mind telling you for our
- 33:25people. And they're just coming off, you
- 33:28know, they have to move everything to camp, move
- 33:30everything back. We had two Rd. trips to Arizona
- 33:35and Seattle. And now to spend all of it down
- 33:38there, we're like we're taxing our equipment and our support
- 33:41people for the players and coaches and our scouts.
- 33:45Like it's, it's been a lot. I don't mind telling you a lot
- 33:48of folks have spent a lot of hours.
- 33:50We'll get to Beach in just a second.
- 33:51We've got some sound on him. Just the news from yesterday.
- 33:54Rashid Rice knew it was coming, just didn't know when it was
- 33:57going to come or how long it was going to be. 6 games to
- 34:00suspension for Rashid Rice. Who's going to play a big role
- 34:03in that offence once he's on the field?
- 34:05How big of a blow, Mitch? Well, it's a it's a it's a big
- 34:10blow, but we're kind of that's and it's a little bit of the if
- 34:14we could capsulize these 20 plus reports I've done.
- 34:18It's not where it's insurmountable and the chiefs of
- 34:22a talent roster, deep roster. It would be nice to have him.
- 34:26The irony here is it was a year ago in 2024, in August, I talked
- 34:30about the excitement of having Xavier Worthy with Hollywood
- 34:33Brown and with Rusty Rice, and we've never had all three of
- 34:38them on the field yet. It's stupid.
- 34:41I mean, this is a year and a half.
- 34:42It'll be almost two years. Well, yeah, year and a half
- 34:45until we get it done. But so we got to figure out a
- 34:48way to win without him. It's not like, oh, gosh, we're
- 34:51doomed without him. But yeah, it's a it's a
- 34:54challenge. The other thing I was going to
- 34:56tell you guys, but oh, God, go ahead.
- 34:58Sorry. No, no, go ahead, Mitch.
- 35:00Well, the 53 man rosters out that I just did a podcast
- 35:04literally got done with Matt McMullen and it came to you guys
- 35:08that don't chisel it in stone and put it on the Iowa State
- 35:12Capitol because it can change as early as me hanging up with you
- 35:17guys. I kid you not.
- 35:19And then I want to get into the practice squad.
- 35:20But listen to Brett Beach when I asked him about that.
- 35:23In fact, we had a little sat down this morning with him in
- 35:26the fact that this could change in an instant.
- 35:29Well, I think every offseason has its unique challenges and
- 35:34this one was no different. You know, I think we were really
- 35:37excited with what we were able to do both in frequency in the
- 35:39draft, key acquisitions on the offense line, bringing and
- 35:43retaining some pieces like a Charles Omena who and then Nick
- 35:47Bolton. I think like every year, though,
- 35:50you're always trying to fine tune this thing.
- 35:52Our mindset is just trying to get 1% better every day and like
- 35:55we're always wired to hit the accelerator and look to to add
- 36:00talent. So I feel like we have a
- 36:02talented team and we have good depth, but like every year I
- 36:06always feel like there's room for improvement.
- 36:08And they're continuing to look for that improvement.
- 36:11And I'm serious, could be a trade roster move.
- 36:15The other thing I was going to tell you guys is the role of the
- 36:17practice squad. The practice squad.
- 36:20And I asked Vich about this today, don't have his quote, but
- 36:23it's now become part developmental and part
- 36:27strategic. There's three guys when we
- 36:29didn't put Robert Tonya in our first 53, there were people
- 36:33crashing cars from Pleasantville time.
- 36:35Oh, I don't know, you know, till to Clarinda and like what?
- 36:39Because he had an awesome preseason, but we put him on
- 36:42practice squad. He's can be protected.
- 36:44No people can take him. He's a vested veteran.
- 36:47Another one is Mike Edwards. Another one is Paul Christensen.
- 36:50You have 3 elevations with those guys.
- 36:52I could see Tanyan going to her 53 with the announcement of
- 36:55Russia, Rice being suspended. But the point is the practice
- 36:58squad for all 32 teams now has become strategic.
- 37:03And where you get players that if they're a vested veteran and
- 37:07don't have to go through waivers, you put them on the
- 37:10practice squad. And in essence, like a guy that
- 37:12plays for the Iowa Cubs who can be called up to the big league
- 37:15team at any second. And so the practice squad is
- 37:18very strategic now. What about cap space?
- 37:21It seems like it. As I mentioned to you on
- 37:23Tuesday, Brett Beach is just such a wizard when it comes to
- 37:27figuring out that salary cap situation.
- 37:29But where are the Chiefs going into the season and how much
- 37:31flexibility if something pops up, would they be able to to do
- 37:34maybe during the season? Yeah, better than we've been.
- 37:37Now, we have had some big deals here with Trey Smith's deal, a
- 37:43lot of these deals. And I don't have the exact
- 37:45figure. I'm not looking at slow track
- 37:47right now to tell you the snapshot of it.
- 37:49But it's not like we're, you know, 100,000 or 1,000,000 over
- 37:54and we've got to freak out. But what what Beach always wants
- 37:58to do? Here's what's important, and I
- 38:00think this is part of the answer to your question, Trent, is that
- 38:03Brett Beach always wants to have some petty cash in the right
- 38:05front drawer, meaning some teams get so strapped or overcap or
- 38:10have to make drastic moves that they don't have any kind of
- 38:14wiggle room to make a move later in the season.
- 38:16You have got to save some cap room to add someone in November
- 38:20and December, let's say, for the stretch run.
- 38:22We've done it with Carlos Dunlap, we've done it with
- 38:26Gordon. We've done it with several
- 38:28different guys. And so he always wants to have
- 38:32just a bit of room so he can make a move later in the year.
- 38:36Got to have it absolutely do. Well, let's talk about Speaking
- 38:38of, got to have, got to have dinner.
- 38:40Got to have, you know, it's a football weekend, starts
- 38:42tonight, college. What a weekend.
- 38:44And the Donaldsons, they've come up with a beauty of a special
- 38:48here, Mitch. Oh yeah, the mobile tent, the
- 38:50mobile R&D truck is headed to Marshalltown, it said.
- 38:54If you find it Marshalltown, but it's under Armed Guard 2 one
- 39:00topping large pizzas, 21 topping large pizzas 999 each.
- 39:05Now, if you're going to have a blowout football party, do it
- 39:08every day of the week this week and high school and college and
- 39:12go for it. But a 999 for two what large 1
- 39:16tops is one of their best deals ever.
- 39:18So love the Donaldson's. They make this possible.
- 39:22They're the greatest Tom and Matt and all their managers and
- 39:24all their stores. But Papa John's.
- 39:26When you buy a Papa John's pizza in Iowa, you're doing more than
- 39:29just get great pizza. You're dealing with a group of
- 39:32folks who love the area and do so much in return.
- 39:36We will hear you on tape next week and then you'll be back for
- 39:39week #2 well, no, it's just the Eagles to pay a visit to
- 39:43Arrowhead. We'll have you live on Thursday
- 39:45of that week. Mitch.
- 39:46Have a safe flight over to Brazil.
- 39:48We'll certainly be watching and listening.
- 39:51And thanks for what you do for us, Mitch.
- 39:52Trent and I and the audience greatly appreciate it.
- 39:54Thank you, Mitch. You got it guys.
- 39:56I get tons of feedback now across the state.
- 39:58So it's it's awesome good stuff. We'll keep rolling.
- 40:01Here we go. It's.
