Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06Movie talk Show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it at length.
- 0:20This week we've got coming off of Dave's Shelf, 1999's Varsity
- 0:24Blues, directed by Brian Robbins, written by W Peter
- 0:28Liuf. Correct.
- 0:30Very good. But also, maybe more
- 0:32importantly, starring James Van Der Beek, Jon Voight, Paul
- 0:35Walker, Scott Kahn and many others.
- 0:38Here it is, David. We're back on the couch one week
- 0:40later and we have I. Think you're right?
- 0:42I think it's exactly one week. Later, I think you're right, we
- 0:44have Varsity Blues coming off the shelf.
- 0:47I have to ask, of course, why this movie and why now?
- 0:51Would you be terribly upset if I answered those in the opposite
- 0:55way that you asked them? I don't expect an answer to any
- 0:58of those questions typically every week, so I'm glad you even
- 1:01have one. Well, Phillip, the why now?
- 1:05Similar to Naked Gun, football season started about a month
- 1:10ago, maybe even longer by the time this came, roughly.
- 1:13Sure. Four to six weeks.
- 1:15Gotcha. Kind of like an injury.
- 1:16Yeah. That's why I wanted to do a
- 1:18football movie. And here I am, Right on time.
- 1:20Right on. Right on time.
- 1:22Why this one? I feel like one of the main
- 1:25premises of our show, this delightful little program we
- 1:28have here, was watching it then, yes, and then revisiting it ten
- 1:36years or 20 years, of course, whatever later, to see how it
- 1:40held up visually and thematically.
- 1:44See if it belongs on the shelf. Ultimately, and then we kind of
- 1:47got loose with it. Next thing you know we're doing
- 1:49made for TV, movies, random pics off the shelf.
- 1:53Now that's mostly me. A few themed ones around
- 1:56October, November which is approaching.
- 2:00Four to six weeks. So I decided to go with this one
- 2:04for those reasons because I remember watching it when I was
- 2:08just out of high school. OK, so I figured we've grown.
- 2:13Boy, have we. Have we out words and upwards?
- 2:18So I thought it would be a treat for you to watch this, I'm
- 2:22guessing for the first time. That's correct.
- 2:25I've never seen this movie before.
- 2:26How did you miss it? The thing is, we talked so much
- 2:29about 99 being this great year for movies and so many classics.
- 2:33I guess there's too much. This one didn't quite make it,
- 2:36in large part, frankly, to what I thought was a very lackluster
- 2:39trailer. A piss poor cast and, well, a
- 2:43line that I just couldn't. Oh, there's a.
- 2:46Couple to choose couldn't handle.
- 2:49I really didn't know what to expect.
- 2:51For some reason, I had watched all seasons of Friday Night
- 2:54Lights, the television show. And you're not.
- 2:56For the listeners out there who don't know, who have been
- 2:58following along, you're not a big football guy. 2 * 2 times
- 3:02fantasy championship. Yes, you're right.
- 3:05Right, that's a. Good credit worth and you did
- 3:06beat me last week and. I did the inaugural and I loved
- 3:09it. It felt great.
- 3:11However, you're right, I am not a big football fan generally,
- 3:13and I also will kind of a little posit here that there are no
- 3:18good football movies. You'd mention that in our little
- 3:21preamble. And I started thinking, I'm
- 3:23like, maybe Phil is right about this.
- 3:26And I tried to think of some football movies, and I think the
- 3:29good ones are ones I haven't seen maybe, but maybe, I guess
- 3:32they may not be good. But I think Remember the Titans
- 3:35might be an exception to that to.
- 3:37Me, I don't know, I watched that.
- 3:38I'm just thinking like schlocky Disney touchstone movie of
- 3:41glossy bullshit. With any sports movie, though,
- 3:44it's hard not to fall into those tropes.
- 3:46Totally agree. I find it funny because I love
- 3:49so much baseball movies. Yeah, and find that those
- 3:53translate very well to the screen.
- 3:55Yeah, I think you unveiled unravelled the secret to that,
- 4:00or at least for me, I didn't put it together, but it makes sense,
- 4:03is the pace of the game sure comes down to the.
- 4:05Pace, yeah. Whereas I find this movie and
- 4:09most other football movies to be uninteresting.
- 4:12The drama of that is it's not there.
- 4:15But did you like Friday Night Lights?
- 4:16The TV. Show what I was saying.
- 4:17I actually really like that show a lot, but it's not really about
- 4:20football. That's what the taking a
- 4:22television show, you're not having 22 episodes is not 22
- 4:25games. You're having story about the
- 4:28town, the players, this and that, which is kind of what this
- 4:30movie is doing. So when you said this was this
- 4:33week's movie, I anticipated, even though they made a Friday
- 4:36Night Lights movie, I thought that this would be that.
- 4:40And I don't think it delivers on what that is.
- 4:42Now, I never saw the movie Friday Night Lights either, but
- 4:44the television show, Jason Katims and Kyle Chandler and
- 4:47Connie Britton are phenomenal. Michael B Jordan in that as
- 4:50well. I believe you.
- 4:51But this one just doesn't really hit any levels of interest to
- 4:54me. Doesn't really elevate the story
- 4:57or this character. General, I forgot to tell you to
- 4:59go with low expectations. I always do.
- 5:02Every other week, every other week, every other week,
- 5:05coincidentally. Interesting.
- 5:07Yeah, checks out. And I'm probably guessing that
- 5:10this is not a director that you're overly familiar with.
- 5:14No, not a director I've ever heard of.
- 5:16Being a pick of mine and, you know, being an MTV.
- 5:20Yeah, you know, I don't want to cast too many aspersions on the
- 5:23MTV Movie aspect of it. Just give.
- 5:25Me one aspersion. Because it did produce election
- 5:28also in 99 which was a fantastic.
- 5:30Movie Oh with Reese. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:33So they're not all bad. Let's say you love political
- 5:36thrillers. That's a great movie.
- 5:39I don't know if you've ever seen that.
- 5:40But no, really, she's smart. Yeah, well, it's up to you.
- 5:42You can bring it off anytime. But anytime, yeah.
- 5:45I don't know anything that Brian Robbins has really done.
- 5:48He seemed to have produced a lot.
- 5:50He performed. He was an actor.
- 5:52He was actually in the television series Head of the
- 5:54Class from 1986 to 1991. Now I know you've seen the show.
- 5:59Of course that's that's back when you used to watch TV.
- 6:01Yeah, there's a cute redhead. I believe in that.
- 6:03Maybe in that movie there's a pocket protector.
- 6:06OK, Yeah, Yeah. Very important.
- 6:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:09This guy, he's directed garbage. He directed in orbit.
- 6:12He directed the nonsense. Really.
- 6:14It's a movie called Nonsense or no, just nonsense, generally
- 6:17kind of garbage. So I have no time for him and I
- 6:20never. Will.
- 6:21See anything he's ever directed? I will say the writer though,
- 6:25Peter Illiff also wrote Patriot Games.
- 6:28Oh wow, and you must love that. Why we both really loved the
- 6:32first hour of that movie. Really loved.
- 6:35I mean I. Definitely no, I'm teasing.
- 6:37I'm. Teasing.
- 6:38Yeah, it's I. Used to like the whole thing
- 6:39until I watched it with you and then like you're right, you know
- 6:42the last 20 minutes isn't that great.
- 6:44Thanks. Yeah, if I can ruin something
- 6:46I'd try to. I have no no problems there
- 6:48buddy, don't you worry. He also wrote Point Break if
- 6:52you've ever seen. That no, but that's.
- 6:54Gary Busey and Keanu Reeves. Yeah, that's a movie that's just
- 6:57known. Yeah, yeah, I got it.
- 6:58Been remade a couple times or one other time, but Kathryn
- 7:01Bigelow directing. Oh, there you go.
- 7:03Yeah, yeah, ex presidents are surfers.
- 7:05Great line from. That spoiler, I've seen it.
- 7:08There you go. Everything that comes out of
- 7:10that mouth is gold, buddy. That's right, these days it's a
- 7:13hell. Of a mouth to come out of all
- 7:15teeth and gum. So there's the gentleman that
- 7:17made the movie. But Phillip, I wonder what the
- 7:20movie's about now. I know, you know and I know.
- 7:23But for those who don't, let's get all faithful.
- 7:25Up here and we find out, Yes, give it to me straight.
- 7:29A backup quarterback is chosen to lead a Texas football team to
- 7:33victory after the star quarterback is injured.
- 7:36I don't like that, no. It tells you what happens on the
- 7:38field, yeah, but doesn't get into the crux of the story, the
- 7:43characters, the town. It really just happens on the
- 7:46field. Yeah, that's it.
- 7:47I mean, that's a big pivot point.
- 7:48Sure. Means nothing, means nothing for
- 7:51those who don't. Know they don't enjoy it.
- 7:53OK, we'll we'll bring it to life here, of course, on the show.
- 7:57We'll give it its due. We skipped kind of the first
- 8:00impressions we just gave our history about the movie, but I
- 8:02think throughout the movie we'll get a pretty good idea of our
- 8:05feelings towards the film. Absolutely.
- 8:08That's the kind of the point of the episode.
- 8:09Yeah, we don't want to give it all away.
- 8:11We want you to wait till the end of.
- 8:13Course, of course, such a payoff after last week.
- 8:17Wait for it. Yeah, if you disappointed
- 8:19people, I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time, Phillip, that we
- 8:23start off with a little bit of a voice over.
- 8:26Yep, Yep, this time with an accent.
- 8:29Not the first time for that either.
- 8:31We'll start with James Vanderbrook Vanderbeek.
- 8:35We'll start with Mox. Yeah.
- 8:37I'm not going to call him Dawson.
- 8:38That's a disservice to him. Disrespectful.
- 8:40Yes. I don't think he appreciates it.
- 8:42No, I'm sure he's put up with that over the years.
- 8:45He's done more than. Not much, not much, not much.
- 8:48But he's done this. You know, it's only Vanderbeeks
- 8:51that bothers me and I'm not exactly sure why.
- 8:55I haven't fully investigated if it's just I know him as the
- 8:58Dawson and therefore I don't accept OK or that it's not good.
- 9:02I think it's a little bit. Of both, I think it's probably
- 9:04you're right because Scott Kahn throws one on and it doesn't
- 9:07really bother me, doesn't really stick out.
- 9:09Yeah, his does not stick out at all.
- 9:12His does. I think it gets better.
- 9:14No, I thought it was bad the whole time.
- 9:16OK, I did not like him just with the voice for sure.
- 9:20Yeah, over the voice over right away back.
- 9:21Yeah, I was pretty much out right away.
- 9:23Yeah, yeah, yeah. Also the speech, like it just
- 9:27not interesting, man. You're trying to set the scene.
- 9:29This is the town. It's all football all the time.
- 9:32It's the relevance. It's the importance, yeah.
- 9:34And I don't think the writing is strong enough to really have
- 9:37that matter. Whereas, you know, we've talked
- 9:40about in Field of Dreams and in Moneyball as an example of
- 9:42sports movies that give you the speeches that like, explain why
- 9:47sports slash baseball. And then in those instances
- 9:50matter, whether it's voice over from Kinsella talking about his
- 9:53dad and the arguments that they had and whatever else, or it's
- 9:56Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill talking about romance in baseball,
- 10:00right? Like it's just like the magic of
- 10:02sport in what it can do to a town, community, person,
- 10:05whatever. And this movie wants to do that.
- 10:07But right away I'm like, I don't feel it.
- 10:09I felt it in Romancing the Stone.
- 10:11I felt the romance in that I should make a movie called
- 10:14Romancing the Bat or Romancing the Ball.
- 10:17They did. It's on one of your sites, one
- 10:21of the parody sites that you like to.
- 10:23Go Mart. It did remind me how much I love
- 10:27Moneyball. Just I want to throw that out
- 10:28there. Sure, it's just when you're
- 10:29watching a bad movie, it can often remind you that there were
- 10:33good movies. Makes you appreciate them maybe.
- 10:36Yeah, absolutely. Little bit, a little bit,
- 10:37absolutely. What I also found challenging
- 10:40right away is the speech, as it were.
- 10:43He's remembering childhood football with his friends that
- 10:46looking at a photograph reading Slaughterhouse 5, the Vonnegut
- 10:50novel. OK, so you're trying to tell us
- 10:52this guy's smart because he's reading a classy book and he's
- 10:57torn between sort of football star and that whatever, that's
- 10:59fine. But his brother is standing in
- 11:02the room wearing a cross. It's.
- 11:05Texas buddy. I don't know what that means. 2
- 11:07scenes later, he's a Muslim and two scenes after that cult
- 11:11leader. So my point is just like he's
- 11:13experimenting. Yeah.
- 11:14I just don't understand why. The point when I say I don't get
- 11:17what it means, it's because I don't understand why Texas is
- 11:20not the answer because those other religions don't really fit
- 11:25into it's. Texas 2 out of 3 sure.
- 11:27Christianity and. Cult leaders I guess.
- 11:30So I just feel like, is this supposed to be funny?
- 11:33Yes. Anyway, it does.
- 11:35Offer some good lines for mocks to say because his dad's like,
- 11:40did you pray for tonight's game? So I have Jesus in my room
- 11:43upstairs, but it's not worth the line, you know what I mean?
- 11:46That whole thing. It doesn't make sense.
- 11:48Also, it means that it just started today, so they're
- 11:51completely unaware. So why today of all days, is he
- 11:54dressed up as Jesus? Well, I think the mom is always
- 11:57unaware of what's going on, that she likes the marijuana.
- 12:01I think that's pretty clear. I was thinking she's drunk all
- 12:04the. Time I was really going with the
- 12:05weed side of things. I never saw weed in the movie.
- 12:07I never saw alcohol in the movie with her.
- 12:09At the picnic, she's absolutely drunk off her ass.
- 12:12Okay, so. Maybe moms are drinking.
- 12:14All right, maybe you're right. Then I'll give it to you.
- 12:16Either way, she's inebriated instead of right.
- 12:20Yeah, okay. Anyway, it just was right away.
- 12:22I was like, I don't understand the the tone.
- 12:24I'm watching and the movie doesn't get any better as it
- 12:26goes from there. You're out.
- 12:27Not even out. I just, I'm like, I don't
- 12:29understand the tone. But, you know, it's still early.
- 12:31Yeah. I just thought that's such a
- 12:33brash side joke to whatever is happening.
- 12:36I think what they're pointing out is that he does not like
- 12:40football. He's totally not going to be a
- 12:42football player. And his dad is in such denial.
- 12:45He even talks about later, oh, yeah, he's excited to play
- 12:48football. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:49Lies. About it?
- 12:49Sure, just. Showing how much pride they have
- 12:51in this game to the point where the blinds them to what's
- 12:54happening in their own household.
- 13:01I was also curious to know if it's true that the football
- 13:05players wear their jersey like as their everyday wear.
- 13:10Oh, like to and from the school or whatever.
- 13:12Yeah, because Mox is wearing his number four.
- 13:17They all are. This is the scene.
- 13:18Billy Bob's got his big truck. I'm in it.
- 13:21I'm with it. That makes sense.
- 13:22He's got a pig named Bacon. Thinks it's a dog.
- 13:26But the crew is coming together. That's true, and it really gives
- 13:30us a good introduction to the main 4/5.
- 13:34Yeah, give or take. We drive past Lance so he's not
- 13:37in the. Truck.
- 13:38No. Exactly.
- 13:39But he is the other guy. But he's the other.
- 13:41Guy. Yeah, he's already picked up
- 13:42Brown. He's in the back.
- 13:45We get a a window into Billy Bob's eating habits.
- 13:49This is. OK, yeah, I no, I watched this
- 13:54with my wife. OK.
- 13:55I showed her the trailer first, OK, and it gave away a lot.
- 13:59By the way, it was a bad trailer.
- 14:01Like you said, it was bad, but that's one of the reasons why it
- 14:03was bad. I just stopped.
- 14:04My wife deserves to go in fresh. That's right.
- 14:06And she just gave me a couple. Looks like this is really gross
- 14:09and I'm like, it is. I'm tolerating it more because
- 14:12of well, I have to. I have to, but it made me really
- 14:16feel kind of old. Really.
- 14:19Watching this in when I'm 20, it probably didn't bother me that
- 14:23much. I probably got a kick out of it,
- 14:25sure. Funny, silly, goofy, whatever.
- 14:28Watching it now, like OK, now we have the guy who's incredibly
- 14:31out of shape. Oh yeah.
- 14:32Diabetic, if not now, very soon making a lot of poor dietary
- 14:37choices we have. I can see why you're feeling
- 14:40old. What's this fiber intake?
- 14:45We have tweeter just this obnoxious sex crazed teenager.
- 14:52I got to get laid. I got to Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:53Again when I'm 20. OK, sure.
- 14:56Now. Check, check, check.
- 14:58I just want a good night's sleep, you know what I mean?
- 15:00I fake it if I, if I have to, just to, you know, make sure I
- 15:03get my 8 hours. And then you have Brown, who
- 15:06seems a little nerdy in this. Yeah, they don't really.
- 15:08He's the he has no character until yeah, much ever really.
- 15:12But but they try and do it a little later.
- 15:14Yeah, what we really see here is camaraderie, friendship.
- 15:18We get to see Lance Harbour, as I said that, played by Paul
- 15:21Walker. Paul Walker, and he walks out,
- 15:23he's given the hero shot, He walks out low angle.
- 15:26He's got a little billboard next to his house.
- 15:28Which apparently is a thing. I think it's a thing.
- 15:29I think it's a thing. They do it later for mock.
- 15:31So it's clearly like consistent, you know, I, I sometimes by you
- 15:36get criticized for my. By me, I would never.
- 15:39For my fat takes. For your fat takes.
- 15:43Fat takes, you know, teasing me about my dislike of Jack Black,
- 15:47in particular Chris Farley. Oh yes, that's true.
- 15:50Yeah, and so I watched this and I thought I'm going to get
- 15:53criticized for this, but this fucking character.
- 15:57Oh my God, yes, too much. Is is the worst and beyond
- 16:02performance? Because I actually think
- 16:03performance wise he's good. Actually played himself in the
- 16:06No, no, he didn't play himself, but he played in the he played
- 16:09in the parody version of this movie.
- 16:11Oh yeah, yeah, naked. Was it a porn parody on that?
- 16:14No, thank God no. OK, no, but watching him eat
- 16:18pancakes dipped in peanut butter and guzzling Maple syrup, to me
- 16:22that is not real. That's just jokes for joke's
- 16:25sake. That's making fun of fat people.
- 16:27Which we don't do anymore. No, I just think it's such a
- 16:30cheap and this is the things that I hate.
- 16:32It's like fat people Just Dance and do stupid things like Jack
- 16:35Black running around and being loud and being obnoxious.
- 16:37It's like, that's what fat people do.
- 16:38Chris Farley doing pratfalls and this and that because it's funny
- 16:41to watch fat people fall down. So I'm offended by it generally
- 16:45because I think it's so cheap and easy and watching this guy,
- 16:48it's just like so heightened that it becomes completely
- 16:51unreal and unbelievable. And to your point, just
- 16:54disgusting and dangerous, but mostly just gross.
- 16:57I don't want to see someone guzzling down Maple syrup, even
- 17:02if it was a thin guy. Like I don't want to see
- 17:03Vanderbeek do it either. I think it's just stupid.
- 17:06To do the privacy or home, I think the difference between
- 17:09watching Chris Farley do cartwheels and and this is the
- 17:13health factor. That's why I don't like this.
- 17:16I don't mind a fat guy jumping around.
- 17:19Find it funny or don't find it funny, it's fine.
- 17:22But this? You're killing yourself treating
- 17:24your body that way, like. Sure, but I mean you're saying
- 17:27that you don't want to see the person destroying their body,
- 17:29you just want to see the after effects of them having destroyed
- 17:31their body. Doing cartwheels is probably
- 17:33burning some calories. Fair there.
- 17:36It is like you're trying, you're making an effort to lose a
- 17:39couple. Pounds.
- 17:39Well, this guy's playing football on the football team.
- 17:41He's offensive line. I don't know what that means.
- 17:43No, I know you don't. You're just there to block.
- 17:45You're not doing a lot of moving.
- 17:46Around so yeah. Yeah, but it was just.
- 17:49Yeah, it was gross. I was obnoxious, it was stupid.
- 17:52And I I did find a little. Offensive.
- 17:53It's silly. It's like just cheap and easy.
- 17:55And that I have so little patience for any movie that
- 17:57takes the cheap and easy, whether it's this joke or some
- 18:00other situation. And he died at the age of 45.
- 18:03Yeah, there you go. He was up to a 508 lbs.
- 18:06He had a surgery to very touch and go.
- 18:09Apparently almost died in the surgeries, gastric bypass
- 18:13situation. I lost 300 lbs and then died of
- 18:17liver and kidney failure. There it is.
- 18:19So it's even less funny. Yeah, you know, I don't think
- 18:23the movie had anything to do with it.
- 18:24Oh no, but it just just glorifying that aspect of larger
- 18:29people with their eating habits. I just, I don't find the humor.
- 18:32No, it's just not funny. No, Chris Farley's funny in my
- 18:36opinion. Sure, for his antics, for his
- 18:38antics antics, but if he those aren't antics, if he had done
- 18:41the things that he was doing to his body, that made him that.
- 18:43Way oh, the cocaine and the coke, the coke and the.
- 18:46Food and like. The hookers, steaks and
- 18:47whatever, all that. Yeah, sure.
- 18:48Then you'll watch that you would judge him differently if he was
- 18:50one. Of the movies, I didn't see
- 18:52that. Watch the movie.
- 18:52Watch Tommy Boy again. No, none of that.
- 18:54Yeah, you know he's a bad. Guy in a little coat?
- 18:56No problem. Exactly.
- 18:58Good salesman. He's a good salesman,
- 18:59absolutely. You look up to him.
- 19:01Anyway, I just thought I hated the scene.
- 19:02I hated these characters. And that's pretty early on in
- 19:05the movie to be that frustrated by the characters.
- 19:10You're going to spend the next hour or an hour.
- 19:11Yeah, right. And I kept thinking, to your
- 19:13point, these aren't real people. Aren't they?
- 19:16Like Scott Kahn being so overtly and so loudly and so obnoxiously
- 19:22that guy. I'm like, this is now caricature
- 19:25to me. Exactly, the only one isn't is
- 19:27really mox. Yeah, and Van der Beek, he's not
- 19:30a bad actor, just doesn't have the gravitas to hold down the
- 19:33movie when these other characters are just off the
- 19:36fucking wall. Yeah, I felt that the group
- 19:38chemistry just wasn't quite right.
- 19:40Someone mentioned like, Harbor and Moxon were best friends.
- 19:42I never felt that. Never.
- 19:44You're dating his sister that I got.
- 19:46Yeah. Yeah, you're you're friendly
- 19:48sort of association. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 19:50Sure. But this movie, ironically, we
- 19:52just did a parody Naked Gun, and I felt like this is one or two
- 19:57steps away for being its own parody.
- 20:00I couldn't agree more. Everything was just over the
- 20:02top, every character was a single note.
- 20:05Yeah, other than Mox little more grounded, but like you said, I
- 20:08don't think he was strong enough now to reel it all in.
- 20:12Yeah, you're not wrong, right? Because we've got Kilmer the
- 20:14coach. You get him.
- 20:16Now, not introduced yet necessarily in the movie, but
- 20:18but he's coming up projected as a tyrant so overtly crazy about
- 20:25sports win at all costs and all of that stuff.
- 20:28And it runs throughout the whole movie and everything is so
- 20:30arched. The parents to the dads in
- 20:31particular. I got some amusement out of at
- 20:35least one of them, so yeah, sure.
- 20:37Mostly because his accent was terribly real.
- 20:40Yeah. Yeah, there's not necessarily
- 20:41like, I don't like any part of this.
- 20:44It's just like, it's all so much that it's like it takes a lot to
- 20:47find the kernel of something interesting, which I find a
- 20:51little bit frustrating. Now let's talk about Jon Voight,
- 20:53if we could. For just a brief moment, we both
- 20:55enjoyed him in Runaway Train. Loved him.
- 20:58He was fantastic. His character was.
- 21:00How he portrayed that character in that movie was bang on.
- 21:05I almost felt like we got the same guy here a little, a little
- 21:09over the top, Sure. Which is not a place for it.
- 21:12No, I don't need a sports movie to have the coach who's the
- 21:16inspiration, who brings them all together.
- 21:18That is the more common, yeah. Nothing wrong with that.
- 21:21Tropes or tropes if they're done right, Let's enjoy the ride.
- 21:24That's right, he is like every other character.
- 21:28A1 Note. He's just a asshole.
- 21:32He's just a what's a what's a good word to use for this guy?
- 21:35Asshole. Jerk.
- 21:36Motherfucker. Yeah.
- 21:38I don't know if you noticed this because you don't know a lot
- 21:40about football. At the pep rally, he has his
- 21:42little spiel. Yes.
- 21:44He's been there for 30 years. That's right.
- 21:46Yes. So the character is a one note
- 21:48and has not grown at all. Big fish, little pond.
- 21:52Yeah, OK, right. I get adulation here.
- 21:55I get success here at the city loves me, right?
- 21:58Maybe that? I I've maybe I've thought about
- 22:01it and I figured that would be a response and I'll accept it.
- 22:03Sure doesn't make it interesting.
- 22:05Just exactly explain it. Yeah.
- 22:07Yes, 22 district titles in 30 years.
- 22:12Yeah, it's pretty good. That's pretty good.
- 22:13District's OK Out of 30 years, he's only won the state twice.
- 22:18That's not very good. Doesn't seem to be it.
- 22:20Doesn't seem to me I have a. Question here for you, which is,
- 22:23is that good? Well, the 22 district is good,
- 22:26but only two state. Can't win the big game?
- 22:28Can't win the big game, Choke under pressure.
- 22:30I guess that's why he never moved down to college football,
- 22:32I guess. And I don't think it's any fault
- 22:35of Jon Voight, but it was too intense.
- 22:36It was too over the top, like almost every other character in
- 22:39this. Movie and right away there's no
- 22:41arc, right? Like these things, you meet them
- 22:43one way and the movie ends the same way.
- 22:46Like no one's done anything. And I granted, it's an MTV movie
- 22:50from 19 and 9 about teenagers and playing football in Texas.
- 22:53It's not all going to be War and Peace.
- 22:54Doesn't mean it can't be good. But it's not a good enough
- 22:56excuse to me just to be like, well, that's not the movie.
- 23:00You're like, yeah, OK, but what is there isn't very interesting.
- 23:03And by making these characters so one note for so long
- 23:07throughout the whole movie, you're like, I don't care about
- 23:09any of these people. But did I care 99?
- 23:12Well, that's a good question. I think the biggest question is
- 23:14like, now I as you can get the impression I didn't really enjoy
- 23:18this film. I thought it was quite poor.
- 23:20Yeah, but I think I liked it in 99.
- 23:24So is it me just being older or is it the fact that the how the
- 23:27characters were acting is less acceptable now?
- 23:30I think it's probably 20 years ago, 25 years ago, these people
- 23:34were your peers, and they're still living that life.
- 23:37Because the movie is obviously static, right?
- 23:40And you've grown older. I think that's just true of
- 23:43anything in any teen movie. The mark of a really good one.
- 23:46And I think This is why what we do here is so fun for me is we
- 23:50get to revisit these things that we liked or loved or in some
- 23:54cases didn't like at at younger ages and view them through a
- 23:58different prism, whether it's a different prism of life
- 24:00circumstance, whatever. It is, but is that fair?
- 24:03100% it is. OK, Can that movie, can someone
- 24:06of our age and our stature, do we have stature?
- 24:10No, I. Didn't think so.
- 24:12It didn't sound right. We do that age, though.
- 24:13We do that age. Should we be able to connect or
- 24:17like this movie on some level? I think if the movie were
- 24:20better, yes. The equation I have is something
- 24:22like The Breakfast Club, which is a movie about teenagers
- 24:25living in teenage lives explaining teenage existence to
- 24:29each other in a library 40 years ago, and I could watch that and
- 24:34feel the same. Because you could relate.
- 24:37Because you had detention, I did have a lot of you did not play
- 24:40football. To me, it's a relatable thing.
- 24:42Well, there's a football player in that.
- 24:43There's a jock, there's a criminal, there's a nerd, right?
- 24:47Like there's all these different characters that are stereotypes
- 24:50in some level. I'm I assumed you related to
- 24:52Billy Bob, No offense, no offense.
- 24:57I just I just. So you can make a movie that is
- 25:01timeless and you can make a movie that is so of its time
- 25:04that it lives and dies in the same year that it came out.
- 25:07And there's nothing wrong with either except one will make $75
- 25:11million in 1999 and not make another nickel.
- 25:15Or you get something like Jaws which was re released in the
- 25:18theaters a couple weeks ago and made 10 million.
- 25:20Dollars, actually, it's funny you mention that.
- 25:22Varsity Blues had a great first box office weekend, struggled to
- 25:27stay there for the second week and then just dropped right off.
- 25:30And that's pretty common nowadays, a little less so
- 25:32there. And I mean, 99 just had so many
- 25:33movies, I'm not that surprised. I just mean, you can make a
- 25:36movie that's timeless. This is not that.
- 25:38So it's not surprising that you liked it more at 20 than you did
- 25:40now, because it's made 4/20 for 20 year olds. 420 smoke
- 25:47something, smoke it up. Anyways, we get through the
- 25:50first game, they win 3517, but Billy Bob did go down and I do
- 25:55want to talk about the scene 'cause I think it's absolutely.
- 25:57Terrible. It's the worst.
- 25:58Talk to me more. I'm glad you were out.
- 26:01Let's go. We all know what we know now
- 26:03about football and concussions 100%.
- 26:05That's why I'm kind of giving it a little bit of leniency.
- 26:07What I will not accept is the doctor accepting what Mox says
- 26:13like he's the doctor. Yeah.
- 26:14So how many fingers are you holding up?
- 26:16Oh, you can't ask him that. Mox is indicating that he can't
- 26:18do that on a good day. And you're insulting the fat
- 26:20guy. He's he's dumb.
- 26:22He's dumb, fat and stupid. Exactly but.
- 26:24Ask him a true or false question and he can play.
- 26:28What's more telling is that what happens after that is Lance goes
- 26:32down. So is there a reading of this
- 26:33movie that Mox he's the problem is surreptitiously, yes, pining
- 26:39for the QB. One job sabotages the next play
- 26:45by usurping the doctor's orders. What's fun to think about?
- 26:50He's the mastermind, I'm telling you.
- 26:52I did think about the fact that it's his fault, but not
- 26:56intentionally. You sure didn't know what the
- 26:59next thing was going to be. Yeah, but he is the reason
- 27:02effectively if you play it out, Yeah, either way.
- 27:06On purpose or not on purpose, it's his fault and I think it's
- 27:09going to overlooked. Totally.
- 27:11It leads to the worst parts of this movie.
- 27:13Like it leads to the inciting incident.
- 27:15The whole pivot point happens because he's unconscious.
- 27:18That's correct. So if they don't pull him or
- 27:20like acknowledge he's got a concussion, the game's a
- 27:23different game. Either way, Tweeter's getting
- 27:24fucked up tonight either way. That's right, yeah.
- 27:28Tweeter might be getting fucked up, but Ally Larder's about to
- 27:31get fucked. That is, that is true.
- 27:33That is true. At this point, Lance Harbour is
- 27:35fine. He hasn't.
- 27:36That's right. Had a hell of a first game that
- 27:38we see, yeah. They've won 3517, not.
- 27:41A painkiller problem though. That is true.
- 27:43Drop that little hint. Yes, tweeters and enabler.
- 27:46Yes, he's got more at home. Keep the bottle, take.
- 27:48What you need? That's not your style, that we
- 27:50know. No, not a pill guy.
- 27:52But are you a house party guy? Phillip, back in the day.
- 27:56Talk to me. I had my own house party once
- 27:58when I was 16. OK, I had that go.
- 27:59I drank. This is the only the first drink
- 28:01I ever had in my life was out of the bottle Canadian Club
- 28:04whiskey. That's good stuff.
- 28:06It got me really fucked up. Very quickly I used to have a
- 28:09problem. I left my house, walked up to
- 28:13Legend Records at the Lincoln Fields there, bought the Oasis
- 28:17album What's the Story? Walked back to the apartment
- 28:20because a girl there wanted to listen to Wonderwall.
- 28:23Great tune. Like I don't have it, but I know
- 28:25where to find it and I stopped on my way up the hill.
- 28:28Good. For you.
- 28:30You were in love. Yeah.
- 28:31Basically, and I just, you know, cried all night.
- 28:32Of course. Of course, that's how all those
- 28:34parties ended for me. But I didn't have another one
- 28:36kind of ever. So that was that was the last
- 28:38one. Yeah.
- 28:39What about? Attending.
- 28:40Others, yeah, we used to have, I wouldn't call them house
- 28:42parties, but a lot of gatherings, OK, at different
- 28:45houses and apartments, but obviously not like this.
- 28:48This is loud music. This is stuff I was more of
- 28:50like, we're all going to hang out and listen to some Pink
- 28:52Floyd on the radio and talk shit about whatever.
- 28:56I will say I enjoyed Can't Hardly Wait better if you want
- 28:59to compare. That is a movie that I loved.
- 29:01That's more centered around that.
- 29:03Like that's a, that's a bulky scene.
- 29:05Yeah, it's it's absolutely fantastic.
- 29:07But let's talk about this one just for a few moments.
- 29:09There's a couple of things I like, couple of things I don't
- 29:11like. Yeah, I love the idea of bang on
- 29:13a dryer. Yeah, you can let that I can
- 29:16respect do some of the. Work.
- 29:16Some of the work, sure. Yeah, make sure.
- 29:18I would want to make sure there's clothes in there when
- 29:20you turn it on, though. I don't want to waste.
- 29:22Yeah, sure, you might as well get something accomplished.
- 29:24Amy Smart Jules, I love the sweater look.
- 29:28You know what I'm talking about. Totally adorable.
- 29:31I I absolutely love her look in this movie.
- 29:33Very super cute. I could not keep my eyes off of
- 29:36her. My wife does not listen to this
- 29:37podcast. I don't know what it was, and I
- 29:40just know that character. I know that person who will do
- 29:43shots with you with total disregard of what it's doing to
- 29:46the other person. Just wanting you to end up
- 29:49puking really because it's a good.
- 29:50Game really. Yeah, so I love that the puking
- 29:54itself was disgusting. Yeah, I just think they play it
- 29:59for such laughs. Kicks open at the laundry room
- 30:03to throw up in the washer. You got a lot of places to go
- 30:06and a lot of time. To panic, I think you panic
- 30:09sink. You would go to the sink because
- 30:10he's near the. Kitchen.
- 30:10Yeah, like you're 5 feet away from three other solutions.
- 30:13You got the front door, the sink, the ground, the floor on
- 30:16its own. Not funny.
- 30:18Yeah. So you got to barge in on the
- 30:20people fucking you got to do anyway.
- 30:21I just was like, I hate. This.
- 30:22I hate mine too much. She's like, oh.
- 30:24Yeah, it didn't seem to matter. What were your thoughts about
- 30:26the guy outside who's been coming to this party since he
- 30:29was a a part of the team, I guess.
- 30:30Yeah, he's alumni. 20 years ago, did you find the hit to the nuts
- 30:36enjoyable? Yeah, loved it.
- 30:38Did you really? No.
- 30:39No, I thought I. Actually, did I, I should say I
- 30:42loved it, but I was like, this is funny because the setup is so
- 30:44good. Yeah.
- 30:44OK, all right, let's do this. And, you know, this camaraderie
- 30:47and then Twitter just fucks with him.
- 30:48I'm like, I like anybody that's willing to fuck with him like
- 30:50that. It did remind me of the shot to
- 30:52the nuts taken by Rick Moranis from the plant.
- 30:55That's that's. I don't know.
- 30:58Yeah, well, I thought this was funnier.
- 31:01Yeah, I would say I think it was made for laughs.
- 31:03Yeah. Remind me of Bob Saget.
- 31:05Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely.
- 31:06Did you watch that show? Funniest home videos?
- 31:08Yeah, a little bit, yeah, yeah. Did you watch Funniest Home
- 31:11People with Dave? Cool.
- 31:12Yeah, home. People just funniest, funniest
- 31:14people. America's Funniest people, OK?
- 31:16You know what I meant. Yeah, of course.
- 31:17I just the listeners. Did you find that one funny?
- 31:20No, Bob's is better. Bob's is better, of course.
- 31:23Yeah. Jeezy as it.
- 31:24Was yeah, it's all cheesy and it's all the same stuff, right?
- 31:27Just get punched in the nuts. Exactly.
- 31:29Do something different, like an oopty doop.
- 31:31Yeah, the old oopty. OOP, that'll play a little bit
- 31:34later. Phil, I want to take us
- 31:36somewhere, please. Anywhere.
- 31:39Anywhere but here. You you went on record stating
- 31:42that you held a house party once you had been to few.
- 31:47But we're not like that. No.
- 31:49Tell me about your BBQ picnic history.
- 31:52Is that is that a world that you would live in or have lived in
- 31:56or have hosted? AI know I have not been invited
- 31:58to any barbecues. No, I have not.
- 32:00As you know, I lived in an apartment for 15 years and
- 32:03there, you've been here all summer, There's no BBQ.
- 32:05You have been here all summer. You have space.
- 32:07You have a BBQ. I do.
- 32:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:09No, no, no barbecues ever. Really.
- 32:12I've gone to a few of those as well, but just never hosted my
- 32:14own. I've hosted my own.
- 32:16But I've only hosted my wife. I never had that invite either,
- 32:19so. Only family.
- 32:21I don't like doing that. It's work when you're a host.
- 32:24Like, I don't mind the cleaning. I don't like the entertaining.
- 32:28Like in my own home. Yeah.
- 32:29Anyone listen to this? But I had a family on the
- 32:32weekend and I made some kebabs, some chicken as well.
- 32:35But but nonetheless. But we get a nice picnic scene
- 32:41here. This is arguably one of the No,
- 32:44it's not, it's just a scene. But it does have one of my
- 32:46favorite actors. Oh.
- 32:48You know who I'm talking about. I don't.
- 32:51You have to remind me, Mr. Lineback.
- 32:53Oh, you know him. I have a confession to make.
- 32:57Oh, Richard Lineback. Yeah.
- 32:59Was the father Lance's dad? Lance's dad in this movie?
- 33:02What it is? Yes.
- 33:04Played Helen Hunt's dad in Twister at the very.
- 33:09Beginning. He did.
- 33:10Yes, he did not. Getting sucked out of the
- 33:12cellar. He gets sucked out of that
- 33:13cellar real good. Yeah.
- 33:15He was also one of the FBI guys in the.
- 33:17Jackal. I don't remember that movie I
- 33:20put so much of. That out, that's fair.
- 33:21That's totally fair. My point is is I did not pick up
- 33:25on that. Shameful.
- 33:26I am better than that, yeah. It's like if it's a movie that
- 33:29we've seen. Yes, it just doesn't.
- 33:31It doesn't register, but if he's in something that neither of us
- 33:33have seen in 25 years, an episode of Fresh Prince, I would
- 33:37have recognized him. But his accent is fantastic in
- 33:40this movie. Toss me one son.
- 33:44He just nails that line. That's all you need, right?
- 33:47There, that's the highlight of the film when he says that.
- 33:50And we get a little bit of a special appearance by Jesse
- 33:53Plemons. That's his name.
- 33:55See. OK, I can redeem myself right
- 33:56here. Because you knew that guy.
- 33:58And this guy's, what, 1012 years old?
- 34:00Yeah. At best.
- 34:01Yeah. So we watch him. 30 years.
- 34:03Yeah. Well, I mean that hairstyle,
- 34:04that hair color. Yes, yeah, yeah, pretty and
- 34:06coincidentally in Friday Night Lights.
- 34:08Oh, really? There you go.
- 34:09Yeah. Boom, done all five seasons.
- 34:11Nonetheless, this scene where he breaks his dad's nose.
- 34:14Fucking terrible, terrible. I hate this scene.
- 34:17I hate this whole scene. Outside of line back, yeah,
- 34:20that's right. And that wonderful line, the
- 34:22slow MO of it. Yeah, the Dolly zoom.
- 34:24They're doing the Josh. Oh my God, what does it matter?
- 34:27What are you doing here? What does it matter?
- 34:29Van der Beek trying to play hard like that face of Fuck you Dad,
- 34:33I'm going to do this. And it just doesn't come across
- 34:35as real. And it just lingers way too
- 34:37long. Way too long.
- 34:38The dads themselves are just obnoxious and maybe they're all
- 34:40drunk like we talked about. And what's worse is that it's
- 34:43followed up by a sex Ed scene. Because that's what MTV movies,
- 34:48right? So let's talk about.
- 34:48Yeah, I forgot about the scene. She's hot.
- 34:52She's a good. Looker, I didn't really see
- 34:54that, but she's so obviously see that.
- 34:57She's so obviously nice. Checked plastic.
- 35:00Well, I don't that it. To me anyway, It's not a real
- 35:04human being. I have a lot of that bookmarked
- 35:07so. Just being a health class
- 35:10teacher in a small town. It's.
- 35:12Looking like that, it's like this is not a real person.
- 35:15Yeah, no, I agree. It fits in with what the?
- 35:17Movie, I guess, So it's just another example of it, I
- 35:19suppose, But it's getting very thin and the only way that this
- 35:22character that makes any sense, of course, is if they run into
- 35:25her at some point down the road. I don't like the scene either.
- 35:28I absolutely dislike. I'll say it.
- 35:31I dislike and I'll hate it. Wow, Mox, just naming off yes,
- 35:36all the names of the genitalia. Not even normal names.
- 35:40Exactly. There's a couple like the the
- 35:42yogurt one that I like. I don't know, is imaginative,
- 35:45sure. The rest were others just stupid
- 35:48or didn't make sense to me. And really, again, obnoxious.
- 35:51This movie is just did I ever like this?
- 35:53Was I ever like that? Yeah, I don't know.
- 35:56I don't like the way he reads it either.
- 35:57Like his line reading is so smug and silly and ending with Pedro
- 36:02and everyone. Like, yeah, there's a few that
- 36:04I'm like, this is not even, they're not even clever.
- 36:07They're just. Wordy.
- 36:08And the last one with Pedro. Like it was such an awkward
- 36:11moment. That's cringy.
- 36:12Cringy indeed, but we do find out that Billy Bob's all fucked.
- 36:16Up. Well, he's obviously concussed.
- 36:18Absolutely. It's clear that Moxon's
- 36:20diagnosis was wrong. Yeah, it's on the field.
- 36:24It's true or false. Question has been disproved
- 36:27here. And he's sweating like a pig.
- 36:29Yes, yes. And when I, I think I told you I
- 36:32gave blood and passed out, I wasn't concussed obviously, but
- 36:36that sort of onslaught of, of sweat and Lightheadedness and
- 36:40whatever else, pretty terrifying.
- 36:42So you can relate to this, that part I told you can relate to
- 36:44Billy Bob, but the idea that that feeling I would have on a
- 36:48football field is absolutely terrifying.
- 36:50You know, I had it. Fortunately at a restaurant
- 36:53floor, I was able to kind of protect myself.
- 36:55Was like. The floor clean.
- 36:57It was after I was done rolling around on it.
- 37:01I was a mop for a while. Nonetheless, Kilmer comes in,
- 37:06says you're going to play like just, you know.
- 37:08Yes, yes, we finally at the moment where Lance is going to
- 37:12go down. Yeah, Billy Bob's all fucked up
- 37:15and the whole thing falls apart. And it sounded like it hurt.
- 37:19Yes. Did you think that was a good
- 37:21like, sound bite? I thought the sound the sound
- 37:23was good. You know, we've been critical,
- 37:26pretty critical of this movie, The football sounds.
- 37:29Were good there it is yeah. I think ultimately the sound
- 37:32design is fine. The sound mix is fine.
- 37:34It's just the hits and such. I don't mind the sounds.
- 37:37I think it's inevitable this happens.
- 37:38We're 30 minutes into the movie. If you're looking at it from a
- 37:40three act structure you know this is your moment.
- 37:43So Harbor goes down and change the whole dynamic, the whole
- 37:45complexion of the city. Were you surprised at the first
- 37:48play the Moxon made was a 42 yard catch to Tweeter?
- 37:52No. Would you expect like you know,
- 37:55an incomingly? Pass.
- 37:56Just shake the nerves. Yeah.
- 37:58No, because he's apparently phenomenal.
- 38:00He just completes big passes and he wins.
- 38:03OK, No, there's no drama here. It does lend to a good moment
- 38:07though. I I want to give credit for
- 38:09every tiny moment this movie does have.
- 38:11There's not a lot, but there's a few.
- 38:13But when he realizes the crowd like how big it is.
- 38:17When boxing does, yeah, he gets. His touchdown a little bit later
- 38:21and he just looks around and like, holy shit, yeah, I think
- 38:25that's a good, genuine moment for him.
- 38:34Well, Phil, I think it's time to talk about Ali Larter.
- 38:36Yeah, she takes this pretty hard that Lance goes down.
- 38:40Yeah, it's her girlfriend's boyfriend, right?
- 38:42Yeah, obviously they've made love or tried to.
- 38:47That's right, the dryer. The have a throuple with the
- 38:50dryer. She's from Final Destination
- 38:53fame. True.
- 38:55That's after this. Oh yeah, it is one of the few
- 38:58horror movies I watched without your.
- 39:00Prompting. Yes.
- 39:01Wow. Yeah.
- 39:02Give me the. They may have like seven of
- 39:04those now. Eerie.
- 39:05Yeah. Any who gorgeous.
- 39:07Yeah, yeah, very pretty. Good looking gal, Good looking
- 39:09gal. But yeah, she's Lance's
- 39:11boyfriend, but she wants to take it out of town.
- 39:13Lance's girlfriend. What did I say?
- 39:15Lance's boyfriend. She's a straight A student
- 39:19though. I think that's important to say.
- 39:21I think it's AI. Didn't get a transcript but I
- 39:24trust. You.
- 39:24But man, does she ever so quickly.
- 39:28Oh yeah, she. Moves on to mocks.
- 39:30Obviously at the hospital it's a family thing.
- 39:33OK, fine, you can leave. I kind of like actually the way
- 39:37she plays that because I think she's ready to jump on the mocks
- 39:40train. I respect that.
- 39:41Like I get that of. Course.
- 39:43But what I think is interesting about that is the moment of it's
- 39:47never so clear that I'm just the girlfriend, you know what I
- 39:50mean? Like there's those moments
- 39:51where, and I don't know if you've ever had that, where
- 39:54you're dating somebody or you're with somebody and then there's
- 39:56some line in the sand between this is now family as close as
- 40:00you may think. You're still on the outside.
- 40:02So even if they've been together for five years, it's the most
- 40:05important, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 40:06She's still not invited in the room it seems.
- 40:09I got it more than she just didn't want to be there.
- 40:11I She's kind of fighting back some tears.
- 40:13I don't think she wants to be there either.
- 40:14She wants to go home with mocks, but there's a little
- 40:15undercurrent there that I thought was.
- 40:17Well, if it was her fighting the tears, she won.
- 40:22Gets a ride home from Mox, Changes inside his car.
- 40:25You love that. Have you ever been a part of
- 40:27that? I've done.
- 40:27That a couple of times you have you've changed that.
- 40:29On the drive so I had to OK, but another time I've done the hold
- 40:33the wheel while somebody else is changing OK it happens.
- 40:36I'm sure, I'm sure it does, but clearly she is on the road to
- 40:43seduction. Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:45But luckily Mox is able to hold off on his urges for now.
- 40:50Drops her off at a party. That's the part that doesn't
- 40:52make any sense to me. But you're not at 20.
- 40:55Someone's throwing it out there like that.
- 40:57I can definitely relate to Mox for both.
- 40:59Barry Noble. Barry Noble.
- 41:02I don't buy it in this movie. I I think it's fine.
- 41:04I just, I think it's so unrealistic.
- 41:07Unrealistic. Would you think it's as
- 41:09unrealistic as one of the kids stealing a car?
- 41:12And I mean tweeter a cop. Car a cop car, not just a car.
- 41:15Yeah, would. That happen we I.
- 41:16Don't know. I think he's an ability.
- 41:17Yeah, small town. I think you can probably get
- 41:19away with it. Football star.
- 41:21He's also drunk. Yeah, he's very drunk.
- 41:23And that's OK 'cause Twitter gets fucked up.
- 41:25That's his gig, that's his one note.
- 41:26And Mox gets his first taste of beer.
- 41:30Well, I would say of stardom I. Thought he would just still have
- 41:34chosen the coke. You know, just because it's free
- 41:35beer doesn't mean you have to drink it.
- 41:36I'm. Surprised he didn't take the
- 41:37coke. Yeah, I'm sure he wasn't like.
- 41:39Well, yeah, I still need the Coke.
- 41:40I still need the Coke. Yeah, I've actually have some
- 41:42chips later. You don't have beer and chips.
- 41:44Like, come on, Pop. It is ridiculous.
- 41:47But yeah, Twitter shows up with some naked girls and mocks
- 41:49again, Shows backbone like no other, Covers up the girl.
- 41:55He gets to be the good guy. He's a good guy, but all this
- 41:58him sort of realizing the power that he wields, yeah, does have
- 42:03some effects with his relationship with Jules.
- 42:06And she's she's there to keep him grounded.
- 42:08I think she does a really good job in her role actually.
- 42:11Yeah, I agree. He goes to her for advice and as
- 42:14you're saying, she's trying to ground him.
- 42:16Didn't take. Doesn't always take.
- 42:18And he's torn. Yeah, he gets a sense as to
- 42:21what's happening with his life and the power that comes from QB
- 42:26Oneness, right? QB one this.
- 42:28Needless to say, I think it's sort of all getting to his head.
- 42:31That's right, all the attention is coming his way.
- 42:34Ally Larder's character continues to make her intentions
- 42:38known, very known. This scene when he finally ends
- 42:41up at the house and. She he knows what's up because
- 42:45he's bought the Congress. He knows what he's there for,
- 42:47and he's been wrestling with it for half the movie, it seems,
- 42:50But it's finally kind of culminating into the situation.
- 42:53She comes out in the bikini, one of the two images from the
- 42:57trailer that's resonated. I want that life moxes at that
- 43:02point. That's right.
- 43:04Gorgeous, Breathtaking. I don't like the way this scene
- 43:07plays out. I don't much care for their
- 43:09dynamic in the sort of seduction part, but I really do enjoy her
- 43:15performance and her explaining. Riding his coattails, right?
- 43:19He's my ticket out of here. You're going to get your free
- 43:22ride to whatever school you're going to.
- 43:25And there's a status that comes with being the quarterback's
- 43:28girlfriend. Like all of that stuff is tied
- 43:30together. And I think that that is the
- 43:33most interesting moment of the whole movie up to this point,
- 43:37because it's a vulnerability and an honesty and a grounding that
- 43:41no one else in this movie has. Like everything else is so over
- 43:44in grandiose and caricature. This is like a very self aware
- 43:48moment, yeah, everyone's else is oblivious to their own self.
- 43:52Yeah, in the world around them and the pragmatic and practical
- 43:55view of the world. Like she gets it.
- 43:57She's a good actress. I never really saw her in
- 44:00anything else other than Final Destination.
- 44:01Check it out. But generally in this scene is
- 44:04the only time in the whole movie up until now that I found it
- 44:06compelling at all. A little Hardy A Hardy scene.
- 44:09Yeah. And it's not very long and I
- 44:10don't really like his performance in it, but I do
- 44:13think that she kind of delivers some goods there.
- 44:16Well, she tried. Well, for our next scene is
- 44:19going to remove a little bit more clothing.
- 44:23Mox, because he's the leader now.
- 44:25He's got to be a leader. This is what leaders do.
- 44:29OK, I've been in that. Role it sounds like.
- 44:32I took my whole staff at the strip club, that's why I'm not
- 44:35working right now. He rounds up the main crew.
- 44:40Yeah, brings out Lance Brown, Billy Bob, all the usual crew.
- 44:44Tweeter. Yeah, Tweeter, of course.
- 44:46Is tweeter practically. Lives there, I'm sure he's a
- 44:48regular strip clubs. Let's talk about that for a
- 44:50moment. I want to know all your history,
- 44:53the last time you went, when you plan on going again.
- 44:56Well, here it comes. You ready?
- 44:57We have to trim some of this because we're going to run long.
- 45:01I was in one strip club in 2000 and 5.
- 45:06Remember the year, OK? Absolutely.
- 45:07It's for my buddy's wedding. Bachelor party.
- 45:10Yeah, that Picard. Yeah.
- 45:11And we said to ourselves, after doing a couple other things, we
- 45:14were like, what do you do? He was the first one of our core
- 45:17group to get married. And then we go to a strip club.
- 45:20Went to a strip club for 20 minutes, had one drink.
- 45:23Yeah. Watched 2 girls do their thing.
- 45:26I was like, she's gorgeous. She's really pretty.
- 45:29And then we left and that was it.
- 45:31I went into one other one OK at 6:30 in the morning.
- 45:34That checks out. That's.
- 45:36We were shooting a a small little independent film in
- 45:38Vancouver and we rented out the strip club and we could only go
- 45:41at that hour because there would be no one there.
- 45:43So we hired our own actor who was going to play a stripper and
- 45:46this and that. But that's the only two
- 45:48experience I've ever had in a strip club.
- 45:50All right, here are my 2:00 please.
- 45:51I have 3 but I'll I'll bring it down to 2.
- 45:53Because you can narrow down. The only two that were
- 45:55something. First time I ever went, my boss
- 45:57took me. OK.
- 45:58I would have been 19. OK.
- 46:01In town, sure. He told me to go into the room.
- 46:04My boss is like go, I went he. Said go to the conference.
- 46:09I go to Ed. Sat in there for five songs.
- 46:12Wow. Not realizing it's $10 a song.
- 46:15Oh, that's how they charge you. I didn't know.
- 46:18I didn't have any money. He's covering it.
- 46:20And he told you to go? Yeah.
- 46:21I think he knew he was going to cover it, but I I thought I'd
- 46:23know. 50 bucks. I don't think he realized I had
- 46:26no experience in this. My second time I went with my
- 46:30girlfriend at the time. Oh yeah.
- 46:32She's cool with that stuff. Yeah.
- 46:33I see someone that used to work for me.
- 46:35She came up to me and said, oh, hey, she was all friendly and
- 46:37stuff. And if you want to dance later,
- 46:39you know, let me know. 750. Yeah, but I saw her when she
- 46:44was, you know, 17. This is a couple years after.
- 46:47Actually, this would have been like five years after I knew
- 46:50her. OK.
- 46:51She's all washed up. No, no, she's.
- 46:53She's 23 at this time, but I never did watch her.
- 46:57I don't know, got a missed opportunity.
- 46:58Missed opportunity really was. But nonetheless, another time
- 47:01was the same thing. It was for a bachelor thing, but
- 47:04I was more wise. That's fair by then.
- 47:06That's fair. You had your own money too.
- 47:08Speaking of missed opportunities, these guys did
- 47:11not. No, you got the opportunity to
- 47:15see their teacher. Yeah.
- 47:18Like you mentioned earlier. They kind of foreshadowed this
- 47:20with like, wow, that's a nice car.
- 47:21If like literally in the next 5 minutes you're going to have a
- 47:23scene with them going to a strip club and watching her, then like
- 47:26you don't even need, you don't have to bother.
- 47:27Why bother? She had the look, She's got the
- 47:29look, she's got the look. She's got that's a good song.
- 47:31Rock said yeah, yeah, classic. It's really stupid and I hate
- 47:35it. This scene, the whole scene.
- 47:36I hate the whole scene and I don't think she's attractive,
- 47:38you know cuz I don't like fake boobs.
- 47:39That's where we go our different ways.
- 47:41That's right. So I'm really frustrated by
- 47:43that. The fact that they're playing
- 47:44the song Hot for Teacher, an old Van Halen song.
- 47:47Notice. Yeah, which is ha ha, wink wink.
- 47:50You know, whatever she's. Embracing her daytime job at
- 47:52night. But if it's like the world's
- 47:55best kept secret, she's like, don't tell anybody or whatever.
- 47:58I'm like, you're dancing to hot for teacher and you're showing
- 48:02up in class looking like you're a stripper.
- 48:05Your secret is not that. Good.
- 48:06You're right. You're right, you're right.
- 48:08So it's really boring. I hate it.
- 48:10OK. Well, we'll move away from that.
- 48:13We'll move into some more, you know, meteor stuff more.
- 48:16Wholesome. OK, like racism.
- 48:20Well, that's it, That's it. That is something they did
- 48:22dabble with. Just dabble.
- 48:24Just. Dabbled, we have Brown basically
- 48:27confronting mocks about his lack of TDs.
- 48:32Yeah, which are touchdowns, very good fill out.
- 48:35That's right. Good for six.
- 48:36That's cool. This scene is like ticking a
- 48:40box. There is no justification prior
- 48:42to this, and not really much after this to explain why this
- 48:47matters. It's just painting Kilmore as a
- 48:50even worse person. Yeah, that's it.
- 48:52But we're an hour into the movie.
- 48:53The movie is an hour and 45 minutes, so it's not like we
- 48:56don't know he's a bad person. And Brown, on the field at
- 49:00least, has made no impact whatsoever in the games that
- 49:03we've watched. He hasn't.
- 49:05I have not seen a particular showcase of him.
- 49:08Tweeter got the two touched. With he threw, but I know
- 49:10football, he's he's the running back, sure he's running.
- 49:14OK, but the the movie isn't making a big point about his
- 49:17talent OR how good he is or how bad he is.
- 49:20Yeah, I suppose so. It doesn't make it clear enough,
- 49:22but he just doesn't get the end zone Carrie.
- 49:24He says all this. I'm saying that without him
- 49:26saying that. I don't think the movie is.
- 49:28OK, you need him to say it. I don't think the movie is
- 49:31showing it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I watch
- 49:34those games and I just think, like, I don't know who is doing
- 49:36these things, but none of it seems to be what he's
- 49:39explaining. You don't think he's lying?
- 49:41I just don't think the movie is doing a good enough job.
- 49:43And because it's not doing a good enough visual, it's got to
- 49:46have a guy say, you know what happens?
- 49:48Hey, I run the play 85 yards, get the 25 carries a game, but I
- 49:53never get the touchdown. So who's going to recruit me
- 49:56now? I don't know anything.
- 49:57About football, as we've established, despite you've just
- 49:59clarified that. Two time champions.
- 50:00You don't even know this guy's the workhorse in the backfield.
- 50:03You need him to. Explain.
- 50:04I know that that's what that position is.
- 50:06I don't know that this guy is doing it on the field, but my
- 50:10question is, does the argument that he's not getting touchdowns
- 50:15mean that he's not going to get recruited?
- 50:17You're displaying talent on the field, but you're not getting
- 50:20into the end zone. A good scout would recognize
- 50:22that. OK, Yeah.
- 50:24He would say, oh look, looks like the coach is racist.
- 50:26That's probably what the scout would conclude if he's a good
- 50:30scout. That is a good explanation.
- 50:32You're welcome. The scouting process.
- 50:34Well, you know, fantasy football.
- 50:35I mean, those touchdowns help. That's true.
- 50:37You know, you're only getting so much, so much for the yards, but
- 50:39you're getting a lot more points for those touchdowns, buddy.
- 50:41That's true. So we're now we're in, we're
- 50:43trying to establish Brown's character because up until now
- 50:45we have not had any reason to. So he gets 3 minutes to say.
- 50:49Makes you think the writers racist.
- 50:51Gets 3 minutes to say I need you to give me a touchdown and the
- 50:56way in which he talks about Kilmer being racist and his sort
- 50:59of indignity of I thought you knew come on Mox what I don't
- 51:07understand any of. That I didn't know and then
- 51:09like. Immediately after he's like,
- 51:10yeah, we're cool. All because Mox says.
- 51:12I'll throw you one. That's all he needs.
- 51:13Yeah, they actually use the one they tank.
- 51:15They suck. Oh well.
- 51:16Right. So he's like, I'll take care of
- 51:18you. But then they go to the strip
- 51:19club and this is irresponsible. I have no, no sympathies for
- 51:22this. Everyone plays hungover.
- 51:24You ever play a game hungover? You ever bowl hungover?
- 51:26I was hungover for 30 years straight, so I imagine I did
- 51:29something in there that was sports related.
- 51:31It was always flowing through the veins.
- 51:33For a while, yeah, it's OK. Yeah, it kind of hurt my game,
- 51:35not going to lie. And it hurt their game, Phillip.
- 51:39We'll talk about it now. Like we alluded to, they got,
- 51:42they left the strip club at 6:30 AMAM.
- 51:47Yeah, AM. Yeah, about the time that you're
- 51:49getting there. To do some filming.
- 51:51Do some filming? Yep.
- 51:52And they have a game later that night.
- 51:54Yeah, and they knew that, though.
- 51:55They knew that the night before. So like of all the nights you
- 51:57can go out, why is it tonight? But now that's the thing where I
- 52:01you get, you know, sure, it's not a stupid thing, but what I
- 52:04do like about the scene is the song.
- 52:06Absolutely. ACDC.
- 52:07Yeah. It makes you think that somehow
- 52:10they're going to pull it together.
- 52:11Yeah, and be able to win the game, but no.
- 52:16That's exactly what I thought, yeah.
- 52:17I was like this thing, they're like, let's go and finish this
- 52:21and they just lose. Yeah, I think it's the right
- 52:23move to lose. Yeah, well, to have
- 52:25dramatically, dramatically exactly.
- 52:27And they just get crunched, they get hit, they fumble
- 52:30incompletes. The football Ness of this movie,
- 52:33I think holds up. I think it's done relatively
- 52:36well. I will.
- 52:36I do want to say that. Again, I don't know what I'm
- 52:38looking at. You got a small sample size of
- 52:40what you've seen other than Friday Night Lights, which is
- 52:43not about the lights or Friday nights apparently, but it's a
- 52:47good showcase scene. It's one of the scenes that I
- 52:49liked it then and I like it now and that, and there's very few
- 52:52in this movie, unfortunately. Yeah, it's pretty good football
- 52:54generally. And what It is a humbling
- 52:56moment. I know you like that, I do.
- 52:58It's a humbling moment for the group.
- 53:00They've been on a bit of a streak and it's over now.
- 53:02Yeah, it is over. They're not out.
- 53:05They're still. Going to play for district.
- 53:06Of course. But Kilmer's lost his mind.
- 53:08He's unpleased. He is upset, understand.
- 53:12It'll be so. This man has a reputation and
- 53:14you just know a water cooler is going to get knocked over.
- 53:18Oh yeah, yeah, exactly. Gilmer's pissed the guys don't
- 53:21have the energy. I know you're a big fan of
- 53:24energy you need. It I love energy.
- 53:25And you're a big fan of crying. That's right.
- 53:27So Billy Bob is weeping after the game?
- 53:30Yes. And who he thought was his
- 53:33father figure. Gives him the boot, tells him to
- 53:37leave the room. No sissies here or whatever.
- 53:40No room for failure, no room for weakness, he says.
- 53:43And a couple of times throughout the movie.
- 53:44Says that to Brown earlier. Don't show weakness.
- 53:46Like Brown's trying to say, listen, I'm a little battered up
- 53:48here. That's the actually the one
- 53:50thing that eludes the fact that he's a workhorse.
- 53:53Like, man, I'm running by heart out there.
- 53:55Don't show weakness, son. I'm tired.
- 53:57I'm a little tired. Too bad.
- 53:59Tuckered out. He was tuckered out.
- 54:01And Billy Bob, correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't take this too
- 54:06well. No, he's not a fan.
- 54:08He's empty. And that's the thing we talked
- 54:10about. This movie does without getting
- 54:12unfortunately deep enough to really make it count.
- 54:14To me touches on the relevance in this necessity of football in
- 54:19its place in people's lives. So Billy Bob is football,
- 54:23football is Billy Bob, football is this town.
- 54:26Town is football, right, Kilmer is right.
- 54:28All of these things are all defined by football.
- 54:32So when Billy Bob gets basically what he thinks, I suppose,
- 54:37kicked off the team. Ostracized.
- 54:39Ostracized. I think that's the right.
- 54:40Word. Good word.
- 54:41Thank you. It leaves him without purpose,
- 54:44without direction, without a reason.
- 54:46That is pretty powerful stuff. I don't think the movie is smart
- 54:49enough or capable enough to really deliver it, but the
- 54:53concept of that is heartbreaking.
- 54:57The whole scene where he's on the back of the truck and he's
- 54:59he's weeping a little bit. Shooting trophies.
- 55:01Yeah, shooting trophies. I'm sure I'm I can get on board
- 55:04with that. It's the only scene to Billy Bob
- 55:06at all that I find interesting where he says showcase scene.
- 55:09Where he says to mocks I care, I care.
- 55:14Mox's attitude is I don't give a shit.
- 55:15He's got into Brown at this point.
- 55:17I've got in. He just found out he got into.
- 55:19Brown, there you go. We're all going to be out of
- 55:21this town. Who cares?
- 55:22Move on. And Billy Bob gets to say I
- 55:25care. This is me.
- 55:27This is who I am. And I want to win and I want to
- 55:30succeed and I want to do this. This is my legacy.
- 55:31Yeah. I thought that was his best
- 55:34scene in the movie because I believe that it's like Larder in
- 55:38her scene, right? Like these things are what we
- 55:40are defined by and when you strip them away, what am I?
- 55:44That's a powerful question the movie has no interest in
- 55:48answering and doesn't even, I don't think know that it's
- 55:51asking. Like I don't think it's smart
- 55:52enough to know they. Stumbled into the scene.
- 55:54Something kind of happened into it, but those things I find
- 55:57really interesting and compelling to me.
- 55:59Absolutely. As you know, another thing that
- 56:01I find pretty interesting, and we've talked about it a lot,
- 56:04fathers and sons. Let's get into this best line of
- 56:07the movie. It turns out Mox doesn't want
- 56:11his life. I'm not going to try to do it.
- 56:14You want to do it. You want to try to do.
- 56:15It I don't think so. OK, I spent too much time doing
- 56:17it back in 99. Two thousand.
- 56:18Yeah, so he clearly doesn't want to be like his dad.
- 56:21Which has been evident throughout the whole movie.
- 56:23It's not news to us that the dad's in denial, clearly,
- 56:26exactly. But now that he it's become more
- 56:29of a reality, he's got the ticket to Brown.
- 56:33The dad is hyped because it's the big final game of the thing.
- 56:35He's getting them excited, he's getting them pumped.
- 56:37And Dawson, like he just explained, that's when I said it
- 56:40said that I don't care, I just want to get through this.
- 56:44But the dad is like, these are the most important years of your
- 56:47life and says maybe for you, but I don't want your life.
- 56:51Those kids are having their time of their lives.
- 56:53That's it. That's what Lineback says during
- 56:55one of the practices. Meanwhile they're on the field
- 56:57bitching the moaner Kilmer sucks and I hate my life and whatever.
- 57:01Oh man, the ignorance of it all. So but linebacks.
- 57:04Great. By the way, I don't know if I
- 57:05mentioned it. You did.
- 57:06He's amazing. It would be a heart wrenching
- 57:08scene I think in the hands of better actors and if the scene
- 57:12wasn't happening over an hour or roughly an hour into the movie
- 57:15just doesn't land. Billy Bob is feeling better and
- 57:24he got his cat scanned. Yeah, just stupid.
- 57:30Just stupid, yeah. But the good news is he's clear
- 57:33to play. Yeah, finally, there's clear
- 57:35indications he has a concussion. But this the cat worked out, I
- 57:39guess. I mean, I don't know enough
- 57:41about concussion protocol, but I definitely think it's silly.
- 57:44No, tell me it doesn't. Line up, he's already been
- 57:46playing this whole time anyway and Kilmer's ultimately going to
- 57:48be the judge as to who plays or doesn't play.
- 57:51And he already accused him of being fat, lazy and stupid.
- 57:54We just need for him to be in good.
- 57:55Spirits, he needs to be OK. And good to go.
- 57:58They just, they need to clarify that information and this is the
- 58:00scene that does it and it's just delivered quite poorly.
- 58:04It's it's a pass and to me it's an incompletion in football
- 58:08terms at also at this point, Coach Kilmore, it's Kilmer.
- 58:12Kilmer. Have I been seeing Kilmore the
- 58:14whole time? Pretty sure.
- 58:15And you're waiting for this long to correct me?
- 58:17Yeah. Well, I don't know what to
- 58:19think. A good thing or not.
- 58:21Sometimes I just want to let you riff.
- 58:23Yeah, I think at times it's time.
- 58:25You're kind of like mocks. You kind of.
- 58:27Manipulate the situation. Exactly, nonetheless, the coach
- 58:30is trying to possibly manipulate the situation in which he can
- 58:34mess with his transcripts. That's right, Mox has been known
- 58:38to go off script when it comes to the playbook.
- 58:41Totally. You don't do that, buddy.
- 58:43No. Apparently not even in the
- 58:45Madden game. I stick with what the coach.
- 58:46Tells me I don't even, don't even try, don't even bother.
- 58:49I don't know what I'm doing. 20 years ago though you might.
- 58:51Oh, maybe a little PNV in here. So he kind of puts the idea in
- 58:54his mind that if you don't do things the way I want, you're
- 58:58not going to Brown. Yeah.
- 59:01And that's not good for Mox because he wants to get out, go
- 59:04to Brown, go to Brown. This is his whole thing, right?
- 59:07He's got one chance to get out and it's not football related.
- 59:11Doesn't have anything to do with it at all, no.
- 59:13That's. He just gets to go on his own
- 59:16merits and the fact that Filmer can fuck with him.
- 59:20Stakes. Yeah, it's just too late in the
- 59:23game for this stuff. To me.
- 59:24There's like 1/2 an hour left in the movie ish.
- 59:26And OK, so now we got some steaks in the game, but he's
- 59:30going to brown. Or is he?
- 59:32See, now we don't know, I guess. Are you are you rooting for Max
- 59:35as a character? No, OK, I think that's the
- 59:38problem with the movie and I don't it's not certainly.
- 59:40You don't eat it, but yeah, I who am I rooting?
- 59:42For there's no reason for me to be on his side.
- 59:45I just like Amy Smart at this point.
- 59:46That's right. You want her to be happy?
- 59:48Honestly, yeah, I mean different to him and I think that's even.
- 59:51Worse. It is worse, Different.
- 59:53It's always worse. Because there's other movies
- 59:54where it's like, I don't like this lead character but I'm with
- 59:57him because of XY and Z, or I really like him I'm rooting for.
- 1:00:00Him and difference is the worst possible.
- 1:00:02Totally. I don't care about anybody that
- 1:00:04I'm watching in this movie, what their futures hold or not,
- 1:00:07whether they get out of it or not.
- 1:00:09Nobody matters. I want to care.
- 1:00:11Do you care that tweeter might have an STD?
- 1:00:14He just looks at his cock and he's like, what's this?
- 1:00:16Yeah, it's such an easy, nonsensical joke.
- 1:00:18But do you care? Well, sure.
- 1:00:20I don't want anybody to have that kind of.
- 1:00:21Issue. There you go.
- 1:00:23So you care. I'm just making sure you're
- 1:00:24invested, but you're going to have to care because we have the
- 1:00:28big district title game. Yes, yes, it's it's all come to
- 1:00:34this. He mocks has a moment with his
- 1:00:37girlfriend Jules because he needs a little advice.
- 1:00:40Yeah, because he just got threatened by Kilmer and this is
- 1:00:44where he's he's wrestling with what to do if he wins.
- 1:00:47Kilmer's a hero. Kilmore.
- 1:00:50If he loses, then he somehow loses his dignity, I guess, is
- 1:00:54the argument and her answer, which I suspect has got nothing
- 1:00:58to do except for the MTV soundtrack sales afterwards.
- 1:01:03Be heroic, be the hero. Why?
- 1:01:06Because there's a Foo Fighter song called Hero on the
- 1:01:09soundtrack. I think it's called Heroes,
- 1:01:11isn't it? No.
- 1:01:12OK, because that's too bad because Ali Larter starred in
- 1:01:15Heroes. Oh, there's another credit
- 1:01:17you've you've unraveled. Here.
- 1:01:18There you go. Hey, very.
- 1:01:19Good. I'm on fire today anyway.
- 1:01:22So this is like the big wind up speech and it falls completely
- 1:01:26flat. I don't think the writing in
- 1:01:27this scene. Not Amy's fault, that's just.
- 1:01:29Before about this be damned, I just think I at the end of this,
- 1:01:33should be feeling something by the movie's sort of structure,
- 1:01:37and I feel nothing. And I think that's something
- 1:01:40that you should be able to maintain watching it as you're
- 1:01:44older. Like I should still be able to
- 1:01:46feel something. I might not like certain things
- 1:01:48about it because I've gotten older, but it should still make
- 1:01:51me feel something. Yeah, totally.
- 1:01:53And I agree with you, IA lot of it fell flat.
- 1:01:55I wasn't sure if it was a me because you know how I'm dead
- 1:01:57inside. You are, yes.
- 1:01:58But I'm glad. No, I didn't really buy any of
- 1:02:02the struggle. The only thing that I really got
- 1:02:04on board with, and you know, this of me is MOX likes a pure
- 1:02:09game. And if if you know anything
- 1:02:12about me, folks, yeah, I like a pure, like a pure game.
- 1:02:16Absolutely no asterisks on my end, no very specific.
- 1:02:20Everything is yeah, I want the original loadout.
- 1:02:23Exactly sticks with the same gun.
- 1:02:25Battlefield. He's got all these ones to
- 1:02:27choose from that he's unlocked. Doesn't matter in in board
- 1:02:30games, none of the extra little games.
- 1:02:32I want the what's the what's the manual?
- 1:02:33What's the what's the instruction book say?
- 1:02:36That's how we play. Yeah.
- 1:02:37And I respect that. Yeah, I'm, I'm very close to a
- 1:02:39pure gameist as well. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:42The start of this big finale game opens with a helicopter
- 1:02:46shot. Yeah, it's a nice shot.
- 1:02:47What I found interesting about it is there's nobody in the
- 1:02:50stands. It's early.
- 1:02:53I guess. But it's like I'm thinking like
- 1:02:54OK, this is it's combination. Here.
- 1:02:57This is your your energy. It's your last game of the.
- 1:03:00Season. Bring it.
- 1:03:01Yeah. Your crowd should be the most
- 1:03:03excited it's been ever This is a district game or whatever it is.
- 1:03:07It's still high school. And it does this big fly over
- 1:03:10and there's like 14 people in the crowd.
- 1:03:12I would have gone one way or the other.
- 1:03:14Either do an empty stadium and make it so it's clearly well
- 1:03:19before game, a quiet moment if you will, and then do a close up
- 1:03:24where you're in the crowds. Because it is a high school
- 1:03:26game. It's not Joe Robbie stadium.
- 1:03:28Of course not. You don't expect a Dolphin at
- 1:03:30any time here. My choice would be empty and
- 1:03:32then close up and it's full. Sure, that makes sense.
- 1:03:35Absolutely. This movie doesn't do that.
- 1:03:37Not quite ironically. All the characters are over the
- 1:03:40top, but the game itself feels like high school.
- 1:03:45It doesn't try to feel like college.
- 1:03:47It doesn't try to feel like NFLI think it does actually succeed
- 1:03:51and making me feel like I am watching a high school game.
- 1:03:55OK, that's a check mark. That's important.
- 1:03:58I think it is because it's a big part of your movie.
- 1:04:00So that's. Right.
- 1:04:00A big part of the game is Brown. We finally get Brown to show off
- 1:04:03his stuff. And which I've known he's always
- 1:04:05done because I know the game buddy.
- 1:04:08You know what running backs do? I don't know that.
- 1:04:10You know this guy did it all game, all movie long.
- 1:04:15For the record, vibes, buddy, vibes.
- 1:04:17But he gets a touchdown, 1 touchdown runs a bunch of yards,
- 1:04:22yes, and then he pulls a hammy. Yeah, so it's two injuries Moxes
- 1:04:26cost. Absolutely, and Brown is
- 1:04:29supposedly on track to get drafted, but you're a 17 year
- 1:04:33old kid who's gotten apparently one touchdown your entire
- 1:04:38season. No, he's got 3 up to that.
- 1:04:39That was his fourth. And you're injury prone.
- 1:04:43This kids not going anywhere. It's, well, I mean it's.
- 1:04:46Not going anywhere. It's too soon.
- 1:04:48It's not an Achilles, you don't know.
- 1:04:51The guy goes down, it's a hamstring, you're out two to
- 1:04:53four weeks. Guy goes down.
- 1:04:55It's funny to me that out of nowhere introduced this guy as
- 1:04:58being of interest an hour into the movie, and then 1/2 an hour
- 1:05:03after that he gets his touchdown, he gets some yardage,
- 1:05:07and then he gets injured. All in in the span of five.
- 1:05:09Minutes. It's a big game, a lot of things
- 1:05:12can happen here, a lot of moving.
- 1:05:13Pieces. It's dumb and Kilmer gets to be
- 1:05:15pissed off despite the fact that they just got a touchdown.
- 1:05:18He was pissed off when Mox got a touchdown last time.
- 1:05:20So what the fuck? Why is this guy the coach du
- 1:05:23jour? Why does everybody love this
- 1:05:24guy? How are you unhappy if you win?
- 1:05:26I don't know, I was going to ask you that.
- 1:05:28I wasn't sure when would be a good time.
- 1:05:31How do you roll your eyes? Oh yeah, yeah, you do.
- 1:05:34Stupid, but he gets. A touchdown 3 times.
- 1:05:37I honestly don't like that coach role at all.
- 1:05:39I didn't want to say no it's stupid.
- 1:05:40I love John Boyd, I think he's a great actor.
- 1:05:42He's too big for the role. It's like having Tom Cruise at
- 1:05:45his peak as an extra in a made for TV movie.
- 1:05:48Oh wow, that that big drop. Yeah, get somebody else to do
- 1:05:52this. He's there to add the gravity of
- 1:05:54the situation because you're like no one else on this movie
- 1:05:57has any ability or talent. It's an NFL coach playing in a
- 1:06:00high school game. I think that's what the problem
- 1:06:03is. I can't buy it.
- 1:06:04I can't buy it. I don't like anything and they
- 1:06:06shouldn't be selling it. And like you mentioned, there is
- 1:06:08some foreshadowing that's been dabbled throughout.
- 1:06:12Lance had a lot of scar tissue. Yes, they they they alluded to
- 1:06:15that. And that's why, well, you
- 1:06:17shouldn't have been. And Kummer's I had no.
- 1:06:20Idea. I don't know.
- 1:06:22And we now have a situation where at halftime and Brown has
- 1:06:26to decide, does he get the shot? Apparently this is like big
- 1:06:30moment. Don't do it.
- 1:06:33The big revolt, the big fight that we've all been waiting for,
- 1:06:36the big kickback against the coach.
- 1:06:38What are your thoughts on how the scene plays out?
- 1:06:40I was hoping you wouldn't ask. It's kind of what we're here
- 1:06:45for. I love what it stands for.
- 1:06:47I love the idea of it kids standing up.
- 1:06:49Yeah, Tweeter standing up and saying no, yeah, they've had
- 1:06:52enough. Sure it's.
- 1:06:54Do you feel it's earned? Yes, yeah, no issue with that.
- 1:06:58I just don't like how it plays out.
- 1:07:00OK, It's not terrible. I don't hate Mox's speech.
- 1:07:05It's just pretty. Lifeless.
- 1:07:07It's lifeless. He's just not good enough an
- 1:07:09actor, I think. I think I know I was going to
- 1:07:12ask you that. I feel like I didn't want to be
- 1:07:14too hard on him. You know he's, you know, he's
- 1:07:16going through some things. I have no problem with him as
- 1:07:18like a person is whatever, but I don't think this role needs this
- 1:07:21speech, needs some weight behind it.
- 1:07:23I don't think he's got any. I think they got a backwards
- 1:07:25like the strength of the performance of the coach needed
- 1:07:28to be. The player and the player, the
- 1:07:31coach, you know what I mean? Like a little, sure.
- 1:07:33Or at least split the difference because the difference, Voit's
- 1:07:36got 98% and Vanderbeek has got 8%.
- 1:07:40You know, we could do a 6040 a little.
- 1:07:42Bit I was thinking a 6832 there you.
- 1:07:44Go anything like that, but he doesn't have the weight I don't
- 1:07:47think to push back and deliver the speech of any interest and I
- 1:07:51think the writing of the speech isn't very good so.
- 1:07:53It's no win. Situation.
- 1:07:54So by the time it's all over, it's supposed to be this rousing
- 1:07:58moment of sports fandom or like sports movie Dome, and I think
- 1:08:01it just falls completely flat. Especially when you compare to
- 1:08:03other like sports movies where you have that totally.
- 1:08:06Like, the movie can be pretty shitty, but you have that moment
- 1:08:09where you can feel the weight of the scene and it doesn't do
- 1:08:14that. And it leaves Voit's character
- 1:08:18Kilmer nowhere to go. Yeah, movie wise, he just walks
- 1:08:24away. This is in complete pass.
- 1:08:28Would he do that? The thing about this character
- 1:08:30tells me that he would do that. He would fight and fight and
- 1:08:32fight with it. The first time I watched it, I
- 1:08:34did not like how it ended for. The coach, the only thing I like
- 1:08:39about it is there's about a minute where he is trying to
- 1:08:44rally the troops behind us. Complete denial.
- 1:08:48And kind of wrestling with that. But everything else around it, I
- 1:08:51don't buy it. I don't think that the coach
- 1:08:53would do that. I think he would continue to
- 1:08:54fight tooth and nail. I think he would sacrifice the
- 1:08:56game if it meant he just to keep his.
- 1:08:58Ends up walking down the highway.
- 1:09:01Sorry, down the hallway. The camera.
- 1:09:04Stays on him. Nice shot.
- 1:09:05They just want us as an audience to let us know, OK, he's gone.
- 1:09:08Yeah, he's out of the book. Like he's not going to come
- 1:09:10back. That's all that scene is for,
- 1:09:12and it does not. Play well?
- 1:09:14Not at all. Not at all.
- 1:09:16How do you feel about Paul Walker coming in as head coach?
- 1:09:19Whatever. Why not?
- 1:09:20OK, there's no reason to not, but other than just trying to
- 1:09:22set up whatever the future is going to hold, there's no reason
- 1:09:25for any of this. You just said the reason is to
- 1:09:27give him that like. If it is to be.
- 1:09:29He found his true calling as a head coach, which is nice.
- 1:09:32I feel better. The fact that his career is
- 1:09:34over, that he's found something, I feel better about it.
- 1:09:36Yeah, OK. I feel bad for him.
- 1:09:38Sure, it's not happy. It's not, I'm not, you know,
- 1:09:40whatever, but there's just the movie doesn't do anything and
- 1:09:42the way it ends is just really, I thought.
- 1:09:45Shitty. Yeah, so leaves a real bad taste
- 1:09:48of my mouth. So this movie never gets
- 1:09:49anywhere of interest to me, and it ends with such a boring,
- 1:09:54bland sort of statement. Let's say that by the end of it,
- 1:09:58I'm completely disinterested in everything I just watched prior.
- 1:10:00So it's an hour and 50 feels like it's 2 1/2.
- 1:10:04And I walk away feeling absolutely nothing at the end of
- 1:10:07it. And those are all like a bad
- 1:10:08combination to me. Not good.
- 1:10:10So you took it off. You have some experience.
- 1:10:13With it, I know you've. Alluded to it where you're at,
- 1:10:15end of the movie wraps it up. What are your thoughts?
- 1:10:19I was surprised that I disliked it as much as I did.
- 1:10:24It was a big decline for my original viewing from. 25 years
- 1:10:27ago. If you look at all the movies
- 1:10:29we've done in the last five glorious years we've been
- 1:10:31together, Phillip, I think this is definitely in the
- 1:10:35conversation of the movie that aged most poorly for me.
- 1:10:39Wow. For me, anyway, yeah.
- 1:10:41Sure. It's birthed in front of me, so
- 1:10:43I have. No, there's no growth for there.
- 1:10:45Other than Amy Smart just being super cute, that was it.
- 1:10:50That's all. I mean, maybe I'm being a little
- 1:10:52bit hard on it and there's so many scenes I didn't like that
- 1:10:55I'm overlooking a few moments here and there that I did like.
- 1:11:00But if that's all there was, then it's not a good movie in my
- 1:11:04opinion. Yeah, I really hated this movie.
- 1:11:06By the time it was over, I found nothing.
- 1:11:08Nothing of value. It was too over the top, sure
- 1:11:11every everything was just too exaggerated for me.
- 1:11:14It really annoyed me. Very obnoxious.
- 1:11:15Yeah, it's garbage, folks. Thanks so much for sticking with
- 1:11:18us. We do appreciate it, of course.
