Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to The Daily Writer, where we help writers become authors of their own lives.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: A couple of decades ago, I watched the TV show Survivor Religiously.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: In fact, I don't think that me and my wife missed an episode for the first few years that the show was on.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: However, the only season that I've watched in recent years was the one a couple of years ago when my friend Liz Wilcox was a contestant.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: You might remember the tagline of the show, which is Outwit, Outplay, Outlast.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not sure how much Outwit and Outplay applies to writers, but Outlast absolutely does.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of talk about the importance of creativity, marketing, publishing, storytelling, and lots of other hot topics when it comes to writers, but I rarely hear anybody talking about how important it is to show up every day and to put the work in.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And I suspect it's because it's a lot more fun to talk about how to tell a great story than it is to talk about persistence and pushing through hard times.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: However, that's what's required if you want to have long-term success, not just as a writer, but also as a human being.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: If you have two writers, one who is, quote, pretty good and the other who is quote excellent, the pretty good writer who never quits is always going to beat the excellent writer who is inconsistent.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And that's going to be the case every single time.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: As Tony Robbins wrote in his excellent book, Awaken the Giant Within, it's not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistency.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: You know, there's a lot of factors that you don't control in life, but hard work, persistence, and showing up, those things you do control, and those are the golden qualities that will always help you be more successful.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And for that reason, maybe we should adopt a new motto for writers that's a play on the survivor motto.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I propose that our motto as writers should be outwork, outlast, outwrite.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Keep writing, keep showing up, and I'll see you next time.
