- 0:00Speaker 1: We're going up, up, up. This is our moment. Donald.
- 0:05Speaker 1: You know together we're glowing.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm going to Netflix Compound tonight to do the sing-along.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm so freaking excited. Oh, yeah. What is it? That
- 0:13Speaker 1: shit is fire. It's so good.
- 0:16Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 0:17Speaker 1: K-pop Demon Hunter. K-pop Demon Hunter. Oh, K-pop.
- 0:20Speaker 3: I've heard of this. Why are you talking about it?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Is it for children? Why are you watching this?
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's for children, but the music is 225% fire. So good.
- 0:30Speaker 1: You love it. So good.
- 0:32Speaker 2: They got real K-pop producers to write all the songs
- 0:35Speaker 2: for the movie.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Dude, preach it to the choir. Can I get the
- 0:39Speaker 1: mic a little higher? This is fire. Hell yeah. Hell yeah,
- 0:43Speaker 1: it's so good. I can be your idol.
- 0:48Speaker 3: She's a K-pop demon queen. You know, it's like breaking.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I don't even know the story. I'm intrigued.
- 0:55Speaker 3: And it's breaking all these Netflix records. That's what I
- 0:59Speaker 3: hear as well.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's like so much story behind all of this.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Like there's like, it goes deeper than this. Was this
- 1:05Speaker 1: a comic book? What was this? Because you could tell
- 1:09Speaker 1: that two of the demon hunters- Two of the demon
- 1:12Speaker 1: hunters have brothers who are demons. Like, we're not going
- 1:15Speaker 1: to find out until part two. Like, it's all clear. Like,
- 1:19Speaker 1: this shit is fire. Preaching to the choir.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Sony Animation has really been on fire. You know, they
- 1:25Speaker 2: did the Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse movies, which really hit.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And then they did Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which also hit.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And now this is their latest. It was going to
- 1:33Speaker 2: be a theatrical run, but Netflix picked it up. And yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 2: it's just, it's so much fun. It is a kid's movie, but...
- 1:42Speaker 2: It's also for kids at heart. It's entertaining as hell.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It deals with like generational trauma.
- 1:48Speaker 1: She's right. It's like Star Wars. It's made for 12
- 1:50Speaker 1: year olds, but freaking adults are going to love it.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? My daughter is the one that
- 1:59Speaker 1: turned me on to this. My daughter is the one
- 2:01Speaker 1: that my daughter is the plug. My daughter is the plug.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Holy shit. It's so funny how the shit I try
- 2:10Speaker 3: and get Donald to watch And then what he actually watches.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, but you try to get me to watch boring shit, man.
- 2:17Speaker 3: We just don't have the same taste. The other day
- 2:19Speaker 3: we were talking about a movie and I said, well.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I tried to get him to watch Superman. He was like,
- 2:23Speaker 1: you know, here's my cup of tea.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Here's the thing. You know what I was thinking? Because
- 2:27Speaker 3: I knew we were going to talk about this. It's like,
- 2:30Speaker 3: you remember how back in the day in the box
- 2:32Speaker 3: of ice cream, there would be vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I would never touch the strawberry. Now, strawberry is very
- 2:39Speaker 3: popular and people love strawberry. But for me, I would
- 2:43Speaker 3: never go near the strawberry. This shit would be empty
- 2:45Speaker 3: and it'd be a sliver of strawberry. And I was
- 2:50Speaker 3: thinking that while I was watching Superman, I was like,
- 2:51Speaker 3: this is obviously beautifully made and well-made and everyone in
- 2:54Speaker 3: it is talented. And obviously it's a major success and
- 2:58Speaker 3: fucking happy for everybody. But it's just the strawberry for me.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I'm just not into it. I was watching it because
- 3:04Speaker 3: Donald loved it so much. And I was, and I
- 3:07Speaker 3: texted him like, Do I have the right Superman?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:12Speaker 3: And then he said, I love it so much. And
- 3:14Speaker 3: then I said, when I wrote back, wait, that's what
- 3:16Speaker 3: I wrote. I go, we'll always have La La Land.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Joel, he hates it. Joel, he hates it. Now I'm scared.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Now I wanted to get him to watch Fantastic Four.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I don't think that's gonna happen. I'll try them all.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Don't do that, Donald.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I'll try them all.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Don't do that one.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Joel, did you like Fantastic Four?
- 3:31Speaker 1: I don't wanna hear him say.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Did you like the new Superman?
- 3:34Speaker 1: You didn't like Fantastic Four?
- 3:36Speaker 2: I loved Superman. Loved it. Saw it three times in theaters.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Talked to James Gunn. I interviewed the whole cast.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It was amazing.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And everyone's really sweet. I think the movie is beautiful
- 3:48Speaker 2: and fun. And the stuff he does with flight, does
- 3:49Speaker 2: that not interest you at all? I thought he was
- 3:50Speaker 2: doing some interesting camera work with the flight and the
- 3:53Speaker 2: movement on Superman. That was kind of unique and a
- 3:55Speaker 2: lot of fun.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Again, everyone's talented. He's obviously brilliant. The movie's a success.
- 4:01Speaker 3: It's just the strawberry for me.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I respect that. I respect a hell of a lot
- 4:04Speaker 1: of that. You need a big screen to watch this shit, man,
- 4:07Speaker 1: because I tried to watch this.
- 4:08Speaker 2: On my big screen.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I have a pretty big screen. Yeah. Look, even the
- 4:12Speaker 1: way they shot this is made for IMAX because Superman
- 4:15Speaker 1: is tiny in some of these shots.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I also didn't know. I literally was Googling these characters, again,
- 4:22Speaker 3: because I don't know DC. So I was Mr. Terrific and-
- 4:26Speaker 3: And girl, hawk girl. And I really didn't understand who
- 4:31Speaker 3: the guy that James Gunn always cast. What's it? Nathan Fillion.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I didn't understand that character at all. I had to
- 4:36Speaker 3: look that guy up.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You didn't understand Guy Gardner?
- 4:39Speaker 3: Why would I know Guy Gardner if I don't follow
- 4:42Speaker 3: DC Comics? I understand if you know DC, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 3: comic books, this would all be so exciting to you.
- 4:47Speaker 3: But I kept having to pause and be like, wait,
- 4:50Speaker 3: who is this guy? What are his powers? I didn't
- 4:52Speaker 3: understand Mr. Terrific's powers at all. I had to figure
- 4:55Speaker 3: that out first and follow the movie.
- 4:59Speaker 1: That's interesting. Wow. Okay, so I like the fact that
- 5:03Speaker 1: they didn't do an origin story because everybody knows how
- 5:06Speaker 1: Superman got to Earth. Everybody knows what his parents... I
- 5:09Speaker 1: like that there was a twist on it because everybody
- 5:11Speaker 1: knows why his parents sent him to Earth. He wasn't
- 5:16Speaker 1: supposed to rule planet Earth, but he was supposed to
- 5:19Speaker 1: be like a god to... humans and protect them. You
- 5:23Speaker 1: know what I mean? That was his mission. So I
- 5:27Speaker 1: like that twist. I like the fact that there's characters
- 5:30Speaker 1: in here that nobody has fucking ever heard of, except
- 5:33Speaker 1: for people like me and Joel, like Mr. Terrific, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: fucking Hawkgirl, and Guy Gardner, Green Lantern. I love that fact.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I love the fact that Lex Luthor is a freaking,
- 5:46Speaker 1: isn't just a pompous asshole. He's actually pretty smart. You
- 5:50Speaker 1: know what I mean? And he's like, he's supposed to be.
- 5:53Speaker 1: He's supposed to be this witty, smart guy. And a
- 5:57Speaker 1: lot of these movies, they've missed that and just made
- 5:59Speaker 1: him this tyrant who is only... whose only interest is
- 6:04Speaker 1: to destroy Superman. The only reason why he wants to
- 6:07Speaker 1: destroy Superman is because Superman's freaking stopping him from taking
- 6:12Speaker 1: over the earth. And that's the only reason why he
- 6:14Speaker 1: hates this guy. And he disguises it with all of
- 6:16Speaker 1: this other bullshit. But the reason why is because this
- 6:19Speaker 1: is the one thing, the one thing that could stop
- 6:22Speaker 1: him is this fucking dude who flies around in underoos.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I love this. I love the way James Gunn portrayed it.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I hated the way- He's kind of like Tony Stark.
- 6:36Speaker 1: No, Lex Luthor is. He's an evil Tony Stark. Exactly.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I didn't understand his company. All these people who work
- 6:45Speaker 3: for him, they're like- And then all the Hawaiian shirts
- 6:49Speaker 3: on the beach. I just didn't get- I didn't get-
- 6:51Speaker 3: They're all just- They're down to be evil. They're just
- 6:55Speaker 3: kind of like evil henchmen?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, they're henchmen. It's like- Imagine.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I was just going to say, I was just going
- 7:03Speaker 2: to say, I think James Gunn really leans into the
- 7:05Speaker 2: comic book aspect of it where Marvel really, the history
- 7:09Speaker 2: of Marvel, they really try to be grounded as grounded
- 7:11Speaker 2: as you can be with like superheroes who fly and stuff.
- 7:14Speaker 2: They like, they want to place you in a New
- 7:15Speaker 2: York you're familiar with. Everything should feel sort of like
- 7:18Speaker 2: tactile and connected timeline wise. He's going a different direction.
- 7:22Speaker 2: He's like, I'm going to lean into the old school comics.
- 7:25Speaker 2: For example, no one ever thought Mr. Terrific could work
- 7:27Speaker 2: on screen. Like people who knew Mr. Terrific and liked Mr.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Terrific were like, why would you put him on screen?
- 7:33Speaker 2: That's so weird. He's a weird, strange, like abject character,
- 7:36Speaker 2: but he made it work for me. I thought I
- 7:38Speaker 2: was like, wow, this is a Mr. Terrific I could
- 7:40Speaker 2: get behind. He's like super funny. He's like wearing the
- 7:46Speaker 2: suit and it matches the comic book and somehow it
- 7:48Speaker 2: doesn't feel stupid to me. It's like utterly charming. Somebody
- 7:52Speaker 2: described this movie as a, a Saturday morning cartoon with
- 7:56Speaker 2: a multimillion dollar budget. And I think that's appropriate. It's
- 8:00Speaker 2: fun and it's light.
- 8:02Speaker 1: It's gorgeous.
- 8:03Speaker 2: And the fight scenes look good. So it's got everything
- 8:05Speaker 2: I want out of a superhero movie. And I think
- 8:08Speaker 2: the emotional connect throughout that, you know, maybe that's the
- 8:12Speaker 2: real punk rock. It's a corny as hell line, but
- 8:16Speaker 2: damn it, it got me. It touches me right here
- 8:18Speaker 2: in my heart.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I loved it. I mean, there's so many other things
- 8:23Speaker 1: that we could talk about with Superman, but Joelle, when
- 8:26Speaker 1: I said Fantastic Four, you were like, don't see Fantastic Four.
- 8:31Speaker 1: So you didn't like Fantastic Four?
- 8:33Speaker 2: Listen, here's the thing. What I was saying very specifically
- 8:35Speaker 2: was that if Zack didn't like Superman, he should absolutely
- 8:38Speaker 2: not check out Fantastic Four. I don't think Fantastic Four has-
- 8:41Speaker 2: Did you like Fantastic Four? I liked parts of Fantastic Four.
- 8:45Speaker 2: There's scenes in Fantastic Four. The Silver Surfer on the
- 8:49Speaker 2: volcano lava thing, fantastic. The introduction of Galactus was really cool.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I think scale-wise, not consistent throughout, and that really bothers
- 8:59Speaker 2: me because whether you liked Eternals or not, you can't
- 9:02Speaker 2: deny the scale in that movie is spectacular. And I thought,
- 9:04Speaker 2: if you could nail it there, why not here? Confusing.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And then, too, while I thought the family dynamics were...
- 9:13Speaker 2: cute they didn't drive the narrative and that really bummed
- 9:17Speaker 2: me out i was like there's supposed to be a
- 9:18Speaker 2: family drama wrapped in a superhero movie and that's not
- 9:21Speaker 2: what we got and so i'm a little i was
- 9:25Speaker 2: a little tuned out we'll have to see what marvel
- 9:27Speaker 2: does next i'm.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Hopeful let's let's let's segue off of dc comics for
- 9:32Speaker 3: now for the moment marvel comics let's segue off of
- 9:35Speaker 3: comics in general We have some news to tell you
- 9:41Speaker 3: after Donald counts us in.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Five, six, seven, eight.
- 9:50Speaker 3: You know, I was thinking on.
- 9:53Speaker 1: My way to this recording session about the day my
- 10:00Speaker 1: parents told us they were getting divorced. Oh, my gosh.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I was, I was, I was eight years old and
- 10:24Speaker 3: my parents did it in two sessions because there were
- 10:26Speaker 3: the older kids and there were the younger kids. So
- 10:29Speaker 3: they had sort of a matinee and an evening performance
- 10:33Speaker 3: and we were called into the, uh, the older kids
- 10:39Speaker 3: went first and, uh, and then they took a break.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I think they probably had a little intermission and then they,
- 10:46Speaker 3: and then they called me and my sister in and, uh,
- 10:49Speaker 3: sat us down, uh, crisscross applesauce on their bedroom floor and, uh,
- 10:56Speaker 3: and told us they were getting divorced. And, uh, it
- 11:00Speaker 3: was very sad. Um, but ultimately, ultimately they both ended
- 11:07Speaker 3: up with people that were a way better fit for themselves.
- 11:11Speaker 3: So it was painful at eight. Um, But now at 50,
- 11:16Speaker 3: I'm so happy that it happened.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 11:18Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:19Speaker 1: So the good news is that we, as you probably
- 11:20Speaker 1: may have read in the news, it finally happened.
- 11:22Speaker 3: We are going to reboot Scrubs with Donald Faison.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yay!
- 11:43Speaker 3: And Zach Braff.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Thunderous applause.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Thunderous applause. Sarah's coming back. And Sarah. Everyone's coming back.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Everybody's coming back. Everybody.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Everybody's coming back. Not everyone's going to be in every episode. Obviously,
- 11:55Speaker 3: you have to work around everybody's schedules, but everybody's coming back.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And it's so much fun, and we're so fucking excited.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Thunderous applause, Daniel. And I really want to thank, and
- 12:08Speaker 3: Donald and I really want to thank.
- 12:11Speaker 3: First and foremost, everybody listens to the podcast because I
- 12:16Speaker 3: think it's obviously it goes without saying, but we need
- 12:18Speaker 3: to say it. The response to this podcast has certainly
- 12:23Speaker 3: been one of the main reasons that we are have
- 12:27Speaker 3: the momentum and the interest to to bring back the show.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And so to be super sincere for a moment, Donald,
- 12:37Speaker 3: I really just want to thank every single person. that
- 12:40Speaker 3: has listened to this podcast and has stood with us
- 12:43Speaker 3: and listened to us while we are, while, you know,
- 12:47Speaker 3: while we did the rewatch, while we've interviewed people, while,
- 12:51Speaker 3: you know, so many things have happened. And we just,
- 12:54Speaker 3: we want to thank you so much for having an
- 12:56Speaker 3: interest in us, the four of us just babbling. Donald?
- 13:01Speaker 1: You know, it's crazy how it all started. It started
- 13:04Speaker 1: from an idea. Somebody, talking to me at a birthday
- 13:10Speaker 1: party saying to me, you know.
- 13:13Speaker 3: It'd.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Be cool if you did a rewatch podcast. And I
- 13:18Speaker 1: was like, what the fuck is that? It was like this,
- 13:21Speaker 1: something like the, I'm working with these people called the
- 13:25Speaker 1: office ladies. And it would be really cool if you
- 13:29Speaker 1: and you could get, if you could get Zach to
- 13:31Speaker 1: do it, that'd be great. I called up Zach and
- 13:33Speaker 1: I was like, Zach, would you do this? And usually
- 13:35Speaker 1: when I call up Zach, Zach's like, ah, what the
- 13:39Speaker 1: fuck is it? I don't know. I don't. And he
- 13:42Speaker 1: was like, yeah, I'm into this.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Because he's like, do you want to do a game show?
- 13:45Speaker 2: No.
- 13:47Speaker 1: And he was like, and he literally was like, yeah,
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'm into it.
- 13:51Speaker 3: And then tell him about the first meeting we had
- 13:54Speaker 3: that you relate to.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I was late because I was so fucking baked, too.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I was high out of my mind.
- 13:59Speaker 3: We went to a meeting. I think I may have
- 14:01Speaker 3: been hungover. I think I was still drinking. Yeah, we were.
- 14:06Speaker 3: I think I was still drinking a lot at the time.
- 14:09Speaker 3: And I remember my head was fucking swelling. And I
- 14:12Speaker 3: remember sitting in this stranger's house just waiting for Donald,
- 14:16Speaker 3: who was so late. I was like, Donald probably forgot
- 14:18Speaker 3: about this meeting. And I'm sitting here small talking with
- 14:20Speaker 3: this guy.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And we have the meeting.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Donald comes in reeking like cannabis sativa.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Yeah. And we sit down and he explains to us
- 14:29Speaker 1: what the podcast thing would be. And we're like, yeah,
- 14:32Speaker 1: that's great. And it didn't work out. You know what
- 14:34Speaker 1: I mean? For some reason, it didn't work out.
- 14:37Speaker 3: I think we got him to like, I think we
- 14:39Speaker 3: got him to like what the kind of the office
- 14:42Speaker 3: lady I spoke. I had a great talk with Jenna Fisher.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I remember that. And she explained it all to me.
- 14:49Speaker 3: you know, cause she, she was the perfect person to
- 14:51Speaker 3: talk to. And then, uh, and then, then, then we
- 14:54Speaker 3: kind of, kind of got hip to like, Oh, the,
- 14:56Speaker 3: what he was offering us wasn't a very good setup
- 14:59Speaker 3: for us. Like it would be way better for us to,
- 15:01Speaker 3: you know, just go to I heart directly and we
- 15:03Speaker 3: didn't need him.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And so we, we started talking to people and I
- 15:10Speaker 1: heart understood it and got the, got the, I got
- 15:13Speaker 1: what we were and, and, and, They were like, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: we're going to give you some guys to help you.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 15:21Speaker 1: You know, with the show. We're going to give you.
- 15:23Speaker 3: A producer and we're going to give you an engineer.
- 15:25Speaker 3: And don't worry, they are not going to.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Talk at all. Right. It's just going to be you guys.
- 15:30Speaker 3: It's going to be you guys. Joelle is there to
- 15:34Speaker 3: facilitate the production. Daniel is there to record and provide
- 15:38Speaker 3: you with the gear. And do you remember when Daniel,
- 15:41Speaker 3: it was literally beginning of March 2020. Daniel came over
- 15:45Speaker 3: in a hazmat suit. fully yes like like like the
- 15:48Speaker 3: people in et you know at the end of et
- 15:51Speaker 3: that's what daniel looked like as he gave me a
- 15:53Speaker 3: like a a bag with all the gear in it
- 15:57Speaker 3: yep daniel do you remember this is where you come
- 15:59Speaker 3: into the story vividly i remember i remember it daniel.
- 16:03Speaker 1: What were you thinking answering the door and being like
- 16:05Speaker 1: just drop it off in front.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Daniel what was your daniel what was your very first
- 16:09Speaker 3: well i guess you didn't meet donald but what was
- 16:11Speaker 3: your first impression of me in your hazmat suit I mean, I.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Was, I was kind of caught up in how silly
- 16:17Speaker 4: this all was where I'm like literally masked up, gloved up,
- 16:21Speaker 4: bringing you this equipment that I had just wiped down
- 16:23Speaker 4: with a Clorox.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 4: And, um, but also, you know, trying to contain myself
- 16:29Speaker 4: as such big fans of you guys that it was like,
- 16:31Speaker 4: all right, just be, be chill.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I couldn't even see if you weren't being chill. I
- 16:35Speaker 3: couldn't see you in your ET hazmat suit.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Exactly. It contained all of the, the nervous shakings. But
- 16:42Speaker 4: it was definitely weird. Definitely weird looking back at it
- 16:45Speaker 4: five years later. And then, Joel, I forgot.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Did we meet with you before or no?
- 16:50Speaker 5: Mm-mm.
- 16:54Speaker 2: So your first call to discuss what the pod would be.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Joelle, you're doing NPR voice. This is how I sound now.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I've evolved.
- 17:04Speaker 1: You have evolved. No, but Joelle, your evolution is massive
- 17:10Speaker 1: since we started this show.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I know. We have to always remind Joelle because she's
- 17:17Speaker 3: come off of another podcast where she's like, I'd like
- 17:20Speaker 3: to talk about um k-pop k-pop team and hunters this
- 17:25Speaker 3: is the k-pop team and hunters quiet hour okay.
- 17:29Speaker 2: So i i got hired february 19th 2020 that was
- 17:36Speaker 2: my first day uh so i had been in the
- 17:38Speaker 2: office for like two and a half weeks i was
- 17:41Speaker 2: early birds i was opening i was the first person
- 17:43Speaker 2: in the office every day i was just hanging out
- 17:45Speaker 2: with uh jack who's the president of the los angeles
- 17:48Speaker 2: division And one day I come in and he's like, hey,
- 17:52Speaker 2: did you watch Scrubs? And I was like, I love Scrubs.
- 17:54Speaker 5: Why?
- 17:54Speaker 2: He's like, Zach and Donald are going to call in
- 17:56Speaker 2: half an hour and we need someone to pitch them
- 17:58Speaker 2: a show. And I was like, OK, is it like
- 18:02Speaker 2: a rewatch? They're like, yeah, I do rewatches in my sleep.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I made my bread and butter. Let's go. So I
- 18:07Speaker 2: literally hopped on the phone like 20 minutes after that
- 18:09Speaker 2: and pitched you guys the show. And we kind of
- 18:12Speaker 2: just moved forward from there.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I think we liked you so much. You
- 18:16Speaker 3: were so charming and fun, and we were like, well,
- 18:18Speaker 3: that's a no-brainer. Let's go with her.
- 18:20Speaker 2: It worked out.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And then we freaking.
- 18:24Speaker 3: And then we did our first episode. Do you remember
- 18:25Speaker 3: the first episode?
- 18:26Speaker 1: I remember I cut so much out of the first episode.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Dan, it'll be funny. Actually, Dan, why don't you cut
- 18:32Speaker 3: to our very first moments here? Cut to the first episode.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Here's a little clip from our very first time on
- 18:38Speaker 3: the mics. Hello, everyone. My name is Zach Braff.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Donald Faison.
- 18:48Speaker 3: And I can't believe it, but guess what, guys? We're
- 18:50Speaker 3: going to do a Scrubs rewatch podcast.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that's exactly what we're doing. Dude, your voice changed
- 18:56Speaker 1: completely all of a sudden. We were all talking normal.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I know. And then the podcast started and you're like, hey, everyone,
- 19:01Speaker 1: it is I.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I got nervous and I felt like I should sound
- 19:05Speaker 3: like a radio broadcaster. But no, okay, I'm back to me.
- 19:08Speaker 1: There we go. This is pretty exciting. I'm excited about this.
- 19:11Speaker 3: I got to tell you, I'm very excited. We've been
- 19:13Speaker 3: talking about this for a long time. We've been trying
- 19:17Speaker 3: to figure it out. I've been teasing social media, as
- 19:20Speaker 3: have you been.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Well, you've been teasing social media a little bit more
- 19:24Speaker 1: than I have.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I know, because I wanted to get people titillated, Donald.
- 19:28Speaker 3: I wanted to titillate the masses.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Well, let's thank iHeartRadio, first of all, for helping us
- 19:33Speaker 1: put this all together.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Yes, we had to figure out who to do it,
- 19:35Speaker 3: and we found a perfect partner with iHeart, and we
- 19:38Speaker 3: want to thank them. And also, we want to thank
- 19:40Speaker 3: the fans across the universe, because I just think it
- 19:43Speaker 3: would be crazy for us not to start with saying
- 19:46Speaker 3: we wouldn't be doing this if it weren't for the
- 19:48Speaker 3: just incredibly loving loyal, amazing fan base we have around
- 19:52Speaker 3: the earth.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Right, Donald?
- 19:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Thank you very much. All of you who watch the
- 19:56Speaker 1: show and who are listening to this podcast right now, wow,
- 19:59Speaker 1: we appreciate you so much. Thank you so much.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you. I mean, this has been so many
- 20:03Speaker 3: years of love for this show. And it's funny, I'm sure, Donald,
- 20:06Speaker 3: you have this experience too, where people come up to
- 20:08Speaker 3: the street like, I'm sure this is so annoying, but
- 20:10Speaker 3: I just want to say I love the show. And
- 20:11Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm always like, it's not annoying. Are you
- 20:13Speaker 3: kidding me? That's like the best comment you can give us.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Well, it's annoying when you're eating food. When you're eating
- 20:18Speaker 1: food and somebody comes up to you and they're like,
- 20:20Speaker 1: sorry to bother you. You know, the first, why are
- 20:22Speaker 1: you saying sorry to bother you? You're not sorry to
- 20:24Speaker 1: bother me. You meant to bother me at that moment.
- 20:27Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 20:28Speaker 3: Yeah, well, just, guys, if you're going to see Donald
- 20:29Speaker 3: in public, don't do it while he's eating.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Or with my kids. I don't play that. Oh, yeah.
- 20:33Speaker 1: All right.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Well, just wait outside the restaurant for him in a
- 20:36Speaker 3: dark alley. And we're back. That's crazy. And we're back.
- 20:47Speaker 1: I remember when that became a thing and we're back.
- 20:50Speaker 1: We used to always do another one. Let's talk about
- 20:53Speaker 1: the greatest hits. Let's go greatest hits.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Well, before we get to that, I just want to
- 21:00Speaker 3: say the obvious to everybody that we are going to
- 21:03Speaker 3: stop doing the podcast for now. We don't want to
- 21:06Speaker 3: say it's over forever. We want to say bye for
- 21:09Speaker 3: now because it is going to be a little tricky
- 21:13Speaker 3: for Donald and I to go all in on making
- 21:18Speaker 3: scrubs and also be responsible and turn in podcasts regularly.
- 21:24Speaker 3: You know, when you have a deal with iHeart, you
- 21:25Speaker 3: obviously commit to making a certain amount of episodes for them.
- 21:29Speaker 3: And they've been amazing. I want to shout out iHeart.
- 21:31Speaker 3: They have been the fucking best partner. But it's not
- 21:34Speaker 3: realistic for us to go make scrubs and also be
- 21:38Speaker 3: able to make tons of episodes of this show.
- 21:42Speaker 5: So.
- 21:43Speaker 3: This is our bye for now episode. We hope to,
- 21:47Speaker 3: I hope there's an incarnation we can all get reunited
- 21:49Speaker 3: and we'll reboot the podcast, Donald. There you go.
- 21:54Speaker 1: That's a great idea.
- 21:56Speaker 3: But, you know, I know a lot of you have
- 21:57Speaker 3: been asking, like, hey, where are you guys?
- 21:58Speaker 1: Did you just think of that?
- 21:59Speaker 3: Yes, I'm very quick-witted, Donald. That's nice. We, um, we, um.
- 22:05Speaker 3: we know you guys have been saying, Hey, where are you?
- 22:06Speaker 3: And we've been kind of quiet because we were just
- 22:08Speaker 3: trying to figure out like, is it possible? Is that
- 22:11Speaker 3: going to be, um, doable? And it just, it, it,
- 22:14Speaker 3: it isn't, it isn't fair to, uh, the fans who, who,
- 22:17Speaker 3: if you're into a show or listening every week. And, uh,
- 22:21Speaker 3: and so we're going to say bye for now, but, um,
- 22:24Speaker 3: but we can keep reminiscing and talking about our greatest hits.
- 22:27Speaker 3: And my favorite moment, I think was, uh, I've had
- 22:31Speaker 3: so many, but one of them was, um, uh, The
- 22:35Speaker 3: sex therapist coaching Donald and Casey on their love life.
- 22:43Speaker 3: That was a greatest hit for me. Where we learned
- 22:46Speaker 3: the term chore-mance.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Chore-play.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Sorry, chore-play. Chore-play. Dan, did you ever end up trying chore-play?
- 22:56Speaker 1: I fucking hate chore-play.
- 22:59Speaker 2: It's not for him.
- 23:00Speaker 3: It's not long-lasting. I respect it.
- 23:02Speaker 1: It ain't for everyone. It ain't for everyone.
- 23:05Speaker 3: We got to make sure we play all the greatest
- 23:06Speaker 3: hit songs. Dan, we'll play here the Joelle Monique is
- 23:10Speaker 3: down to get down song.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Get the word out all over the town. Joelle Monique
- 23:17Speaker 5: is down to get down. No matter what's between your legs,
- 23:23Speaker 5: tomorrow morning you could be making an X. Joelle Monique
- 23:26Speaker 5: is down to get down.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Joel Monique is down to get down.
- 23:33Speaker 2: So this song people will still randomly sing to me.
- 23:35Speaker 1: What did you say, Joel?
- 23:36Speaker 2: If I'm at a convention or something and somebody notices me,
- 23:39Speaker 2: they're belting it. It is a fun song.
- 23:42Speaker 1: It's catchy.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Wow.
- 23:43Speaker 3: It is a very hooky song, Joel. That's when we
- 23:45Speaker 3: took a brief dabble into trying to be matchmakers for Joel.
- 23:50Speaker 1: How'd that work out? Are you guys still talking?
- 23:52Speaker 3: Yeah, Joel, are you still in love with each other
- 23:54Speaker 3: and we don't know about it?
- 23:54Speaker 1: Do you guys still talk?
- 23:57Speaker 2: No, that's why they were sweet. We talked a couple times.
- 24:00Speaker 3: It was nice. She was very nice.
- 24:02Speaker 1: That was very sweet.
- 24:04Speaker 3: And Daniel, how's your life going in New York with
- 24:08Speaker 3: your new setup?
- 24:10Speaker 1: It's great.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Not too much has changed. Still just me, wife, and dog,
- 24:14Speaker 4: but we love Brooklyn. We love New York. I miss
- 24:18Speaker 4: LA a lot, but we're very happy here. So all
- 24:21Speaker 4: good things.
- 24:22Speaker 3: How do you feel, Donald, right now? What's the feeling
- 24:24Speaker 3: in your heart?
- 24:27Speaker 1: In my heart right now?
- 24:28Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:28Speaker 1: What do you feel?
- 24:29Speaker 3: Share with us.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Well, I just feel like we have so much to
- 24:32Speaker 1: talk about and it sucks that we got to talk
- 24:34Speaker 1: about how this is coming to an end. But I
- 24:36Speaker 1: feel like there's so many other things that are going
- 24:39Speaker 1: on right now that could be talked about.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Well, you can talk about whatever you want. We don't
- 24:45Speaker 3: solely have to. I just wanted to get together with
- 24:47Speaker 3: you guys and say, you know, it felt weird. You know,
- 24:51Speaker 3: behind the scenes, we were talking about, hey, I think
- 24:54Speaker 3: we're going to stop the podcast for now. And and
- 24:58Speaker 3: then it felt weird to not check in with the
- 25:00Speaker 3: audience and said, hey, we love you. And and thank
- 25:04Speaker 3: you for all the support. I think it's it's very
- 25:07Speaker 3: clear to Donald and I that it had not been
- 25:09Speaker 3: for the reception of this podcast. And then, of course,
- 25:13Speaker 3: the success of the T-Mobile ads that that that are
- 25:19Speaker 3: have become quite popular, that that that energy totally, you know,
- 25:24Speaker 3: created an interest for a scrubs reboot.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Absolutely. It definitely rejuvenized our bromance too, as far as
- 25:33Speaker 1: people being interested in our bromance. The fact that we
- 25:37Speaker 1: got together and people got to see an inside on
- 25:42Speaker 1: what it's like to be us. You look at married
- 25:44Speaker 1: couples and celebrity couples and stuff like that, and you
- 25:48Speaker 1: And you always wonder, I wonder what they're like in
- 25:50Speaker 1: real life. You know what I mean? And people got
- 25:53Speaker 1: to see us. People got to see, you know, you
- 25:57Speaker 1: could release the fight. Dan will release the fight.
- 25:59Speaker 3: No, don't release the fight. The only thing we didn't
- 26:02Speaker 3: share with people was the fight. I think that we
- 26:07Speaker 3: were very open. Donald was very open about his sex life.
- 26:11Speaker 1: And his use of marijuana.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Yes, his use of marijuana, his struggles with his. We
- 26:21Speaker 3: were all very candid. You know, we didn't censor too much,
- 26:24Speaker 3: just the fight. You know, it's funny. There's a room
- 26:26Speaker 3: of Scrubs writers that are brilliant and funny people that
- 26:29Speaker 3: are writing the new show. And they've been so enjoying
- 26:33Speaker 3: listening to the podcast because the podcast is such a
- 26:37Speaker 3: wealth of information on Donald and me. And they were like, hey,
- 26:45Speaker 3: can we hear the fight? And I was like, there's
- 26:49Speaker 3: like so many podcast episodes. Why do you need to
- 26:51Speaker 3: have a fight? They're like, well, we kind of got
- 26:52Speaker 3: into the show and now we want to hear the fight.
- 26:55Speaker 2: They need to hear the behind the scenes. I get it.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I get it. They're like, we want.
- 26:58Speaker 1: To hear the unfortunate stuff. But that's the thing. That's
- 27:02Speaker 1: what was so great about this is that it also
- 27:04Speaker 1: gave us an excuse to freaking talk to each other
- 27:07Speaker 1: every day. And if anything, it built our relationship even stronger.
- 27:10Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Yeah. I enjoy... having our
- 27:14Speaker 1: FaceTimes now where we FaceTime each other.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Yeah, now we just do our own podcast where we
- 27:18Speaker 3: just FaceTime each other.
- 27:19Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, I like that shit.
- 27:21Speaker 1: That's adorable.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Tell them how I sometimes answer the phone.
- 27:26Speaker 1: So look, and I was saying this in the writer's
- 27:28Speaker 1: room too. I was telling all the writers.
- 27:30Speaker 3: They can't use.
- 27:33Speaker 1: This on ABC. Sometimes Zach answers the phone. Pretend the phone,
- 27:37Speaker 1: this camera right here is the phone. He'll answer it
- 27:41Speaker 1: like this. Hell no.
- 27:46Speaker 3: The audience can't see that. I give him the point
- 27:49Speaker 3: of view.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I provide him with the point of view as though.
- 27:52Speaker 3: He were filleting me.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Good God.
- 28:08Speaker 3: And he goes, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Stop, stop, stop. Not that, not that, not that.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Oh my God.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Don't ever use that on ABC.
- 28:16Speaker 3: And if he's in good behavior, I'll give him like
- 28:18Speaker 3: top pube. Like just.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Just a little pube.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Just the edge of pube.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 28:25Speaker 3: That's a reward for doing something funny. I hear you're
- 28:29Speaker 3: back on the ganja.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Donald's back on the weed.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Are you?
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, man. Absolutely.
- 28:35Speaker 3: I know. I put two and two together that you'd
- 28:38Speaker 3: return to your favorite bird.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Why is that? Because I showed you a spaceship. I
- 28:42Speaker 1: was trying to segue into stop motion animation, brother.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Well, before you do that, I could just tell because
- 28:50Speaker 3: you spend a lot of time, almost all your free time,
- 28:54Speaker 3: awake time, stop motion animating. And I know that that
- 28:59Speaker 3: pairs nicely for you with ganja.
- 29:02Speaker 1: So- So hold on now.
- 29:05Speaker 3: And then I asked you if you were training and
- 29:08Speaker 3: you said no. And my brain went, I'll bet he's
- 29:11Speaker 3: back on the ganja sauce.
- 29:14Speaker 1: So here's the deal.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Right now, I am really trying to level up in
- 29:19Speaker 1: stop motion animation. And when I say level up, I'm
- 29:22Speaker 1: trying to get to a level where I can do
- 29:26Speaker 1: what I see in my mind's eye onto something. onto
- 29:34Speaker 1: whatever it is I'm shooting using my hands, stop motion. wise.
- 29:41Speaker 1: And so because of that, I am consistently animating now.
- 29:49Speaker 1: And sometimes marijuana does pair well with it. But my
- 29:55Speaker 1: time right now is 100%. Ladies, I know it's so sexy.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Holla at your boy. Yeah. But I spend my time
- 30:04Speaker 1: in a dark room playing with toys, baby. Yeah.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Hell yeah.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Yeah, baby. Making toys move. Ladies, swoon. Zach, I love you.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Zach, I love you.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:14Speaker 3: I want to make sure we get all the sound
- 30:16Speaker 3: effects into this episode. We have to do our greatest hits. Yeah, well,
- 30:21Speaker 3: go for yours, as the kids say. Right, Donald? Go
- 30:24Speaker 3: for yours.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah, man. I mean, it's... Look. I really enjoy... I
- 30:30Speaker 1: thought this would be something that I did when I
- 30:33Speaker 1: was a kid. I thought I'd be an animator. If
- 30:36Speaker 1: you ask my mom or anybody who knew me, I
- 30:39Speaker 1: wasn't just into Star Wars because of the story. I
- 30:43Speaker 1: remember one year my mom asked me, what do you
- 30:47Speaker 1: want for Christmas? And I said, a blue screen. You
- 30:49Speaker 1: know what I mean? That's what it is for me.
- 30:53Speaker 1: And it's always been that. And so I have a
- 30:57Speaker 1: I have a crazy action figure toy fetish, but it's
- 31:01Speaker 1: only because I dream of animating it all one day.
- 31:05Speaker 3: And you, you know, I got Donald for one of
- 31:08Speaker 3: his birthdays, these stop motion figures of us. Yes. Have
- 31:14Speaker 3: you moved on to using those?
- 31:17Speaker 1: I have, as a matter of fact. And that's what
- 31:19Speaker 1: I'm animating right now. I'm animating one of.
- 31:24Speaker 1: The character that you made of me, I showed it
- 31:28Speaker 1: to you.
- 31:28Speaker 3: I would like to talk to you about some of
- 31:34Speaker 3: the things that you do.
- 31:36Speaker 1: But no, sincerely.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Scandal noted.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Right, scandal noted. I made a stop motion animation with
- 31:46Speaker 1: the puppet that you gave me. And this is just
- 31:48Speaker 1: a blocking. I want to see if I could show
- 31:50Speaker 1: it to you guys on this and if it's. It's from... Wow.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Wow.
- 32:00Speaker 1: This looks crazy.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Wow. It really does.
- 32:08Speaker 1: It's so good with the.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Vowels.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 32:13Speaker 3: It looks really good. And with the mouth movement.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so smooth.
- 32:27Speaker 3: How many– it's amazing. So audience, for those of you
- 32:29Speaker 3: who don't know and can't see this, it's amazing. It
- 32:34Speaker 3: looks professional as hell of a figurine of Donald's– a
- 32:39Speaker 3: puppet we made of Donald. But explain how the mouths
- 32:42Speaker 3: work because the vowels and the mouth moves flawlessly, and
- 32:46Speaker 3: each time he's swapping out– it's like a magnet, right?
- 32:49Speaker 3: And you're swapping out a different mouth?
- 32:51Speaker 1: Yeah. So the guy sent me puppets with magnets that you–
- 32:59Speaker 1: the mouths are connected to magnets and you literally pull
- 33:02Speaker 1: off a jaw and put a different jaw on.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Right, but it's so flawless. How do you, I mean,
- 33:09Speaker 3: explain to people that have no idea. How the hell
- 33:12Speaker 3: do you choose which mouth and all that?
- 33:14Speaker 1: Well, you kind of recognize the shape in time. This
- 33:18Speaker 1: actually is the easiest part of stop motion. The hardest
- 33:21Speaker 1: part of stop motion is the movement and doing little
- 33:24Speaker 1: movement and still being able to see it you know
- 33:27Speaker 1: what i mean so um you know the weight shifts
- 33:30Speaker 1: and all of that stuff if it's too big it
- 33:32Speaker 1: looks unnatural but the smaller it is the more you
- 33:36Speaker 1: believe it and the more lifelike it looks and the more.
- 33:38Speaker 3: You got really good shows you got really good that
- 33:41Speaker 3: looks amazing thank you i how long did i take.
- 33:44Speaker 1: You a couple of hours but that's that's but that
- 33:48Speaker 1: was that's a blocking that wasn't even the hero shot
- 33:52Speaker 1: so i did the blocking And now I'm on the
- 33:54Speaker 1: hero shot, and the hero shot is way harder.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Don't show it to us, because it's not good radio,
- 34:02Speaker 3: because this is just radio. We love you, but people
- 34:06Speaker 3: can't see it.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I want to show y'all just to show y'all, but okay.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Send it to the group chat, Donald.
- 34:12Speaker 1: We'll check it out.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Send it to the group chat, Donald, and we will
- 34:15Speaker 3: look at it. Bill Lawrence was talking about making this
- 34:21Speaker 3: Turk's hobby, because... Donald is so into it and Bill
- 34:24Speaker 3: loves to pull from our real lives. And I was
- 34:27Speaker 3: talking to Bill and I said, you know, Turk should
- 34:31Speaker 3: have a hobby that he's so obsessed with because Donald
- 34:34Speaker 3: is so obsessed with a hobby and that could be
- 34:36Speaker 3: an interesting thing to fold in. And like the obvious
- 34:38Speaker 3: doctor thing would be like golf or something. And I
- 34:43Speaker 3: said to Bill, you know, we should brainstorm on that.
- 34:46Speaker 3: And he's like, I think we should make it. stop
- 34:48Speaker 3: motion animation, just like Donald's into. So I don't know
- 34:50Speaker 3: if that's going to actually happen or not, but he was,
- 34:52Speaker 3: that's what he was saying.
- 34:54Speaker 1: That's awesome. It's great storytelling. And it's a way that
- 34:58Speaker 1: I could tell stories without having to be as big of,
- 35:03Speaker 1: as big of, without needing as big of a production
- 35:06Speaker 1: as it would cost to do like Superman or, or
- 35:11Speaker 1: an actual star Wars or just any, an independent film.
- 35:16Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, and, You know, I
- 35:21Speaker 1: was saying to my wife, I was like, you know,
- 35:23Speaker 1: Zach has hobbies and stuff like that, but his other
- 35:26Speaker 1: passion is directing and stuff like that. I was like,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I wish I had something like that. She was like,
- 35:31Speaker 1: you do, it's stop motion. That's your version of directing.
- 35:34Speaker 1: That's your version of, you know, you might not be
- 35:37Speaker 1: dealing with egos and you might not be dealing with,
- 35:40Speaker 1: you know, as much of the puzzle as Zach is
- 35:43Speaker 1: dealing with, but it's the same. It's almost the exact
- 35:46Speaker 1: same thing. You're, setting up you're telling you're trying to
- 35:49Speaker 1: tell the story that's true thanks babe.
- 35:51Speaker 3: And also you can do it on your and you
- 35:53Speaker 3: can do it by just walking in your garage and
- 35:55Speaker 3: focusing you know one thing about being a director and
- 35:58Speaker 3: obviously you can make short films and just shoot something
- 36:01Speaker 3: small but in making the things I've been making you
- 36:05Speaker 3: sit around waiting a lot for things to actually happen
- 36:08Speaker 3: and you have the added benefit that you can just
- 36:10Speaker 3: go make.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Shit yeah Wu-Tang forever Wu-Tang Wu-Tang forever forever and ever
- 36:17Speaker 1: I want to ask a question because I heard I
- 36:18Speaker 1: saw this meme and I thought it was an interesting question.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Wu-Tang or Outcast?
- 36:28Speaker 2: For me personally, it's just Outcast, but that's just because
- 36:30Speaker 2: I have an obsession with Andre 3000. I think he's amazing.
- 36:34Speaker 2: But long live the Wu.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Yeah, Outcast rules.
- 36:36Speaker 2: They really brought Kung Fu to the black community.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Yeah, because it's like they're different, like, you know, cultural
- 36:42Speaker 4: aspects that they both affected. And it's like, you know,
- 36:45Speaker 4: the way that, you know, the way that like the
- 36:48Speaker 4: RZA has like gone on to affect film is like interesting.
- 36:53Speaker 4: And like, I don't know if, I think Outkast has
- 36:56Speaker 4: had a specifically music focused impact where it feels like
- 36:59Speaker 4: Wu-Tang has had like, I don't know, maybe a, a
- 37:03Speaker 4: wider ranging cultural impact, but maybe that's just my perspective.
- 37:06Speaker 2: No, they got the symbol and everything.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Zach and Donald are gay newlyweds in house arrest. I
- 37:11Speaker 1: thought it was the most interesting question to be asked.
- 37:14Speaker 1: It's like, if you're going to do a, if you're
- 37:16Speaker 1: going to, compare two groups, why would you compare those two?
- 37:22Speaker 1: You know what I mean? And a lot of people
- 37:24Speaker 1: said Outkast, which is great. I think Outkast is great.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I think Wu-Tang is great. But it was just a
- 37:31Speaker 1: weird comparison. It was like, wow, Wu-Tang or Outkast?
- 37:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 37:35Speaker 1: That's legit.
- 37:35Speaker 3: You know what my vote would be for amongst those two?
- 37:38Speaker 1: Who? You haven't gone for a while. Wow.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Subverting expectation there.
- 37:47Speaker 1: You have been gone for a while. That's what all
- 37:49Speaker 1: the fans said. You have been gone for a while.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what they were saying. When they saw this
- 37:54Speaker 3: pop up in their podcast feed, they went, they have
- 37:59Speaker 3: been gone for a while.
- 38:00Speaker 1: You have been gone for a while. Such wrong infliction.
- 38:12Speaker 3: You have been gone for a while. If you ever
- 38:15Speaker 3: try to direct someone that really is choosing the wrong word,
- 38:19Speaker 3: it's very tricky because you're not supposed to, as a director,
- 38:22Speaker 3: just say it like this. It's called giving a line reading,
- 38:25Speaker 3: and it's frowned upon. So you have to find these
- 38:28Speaker 3: artful ways to be like, hey, it feels like you're
- 38:30Speaker 3: sort of underlining have and maybe not. Maybe don't. It
- 38:36Speaker 3: feels like you're putting emphasis. Can I hear what it
- 38:41Speaker 3: would sound like if you weren't underlining the word have?
- 38:44Speaker 1: Do you know what they wanted me to do? They
- 38:46Speaker 1: wanted it to be, you have been gone for a while.
- 38:49Speaker 1: They wanted it that way. And you subverted them. He's like,
- 38:54Speaker 1: you learned how to make coffee? Well, you have been
- 38:56Speaker 1: gone for a while.
- 38:58Speaker 3: That's better.
- 38:59Speaker 1: That's the way it was supposed to be.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Wow, you have been gone for a while.
- 39:02Speaker 1: You have been gone for a while.
- 39:05Speaker 5: Right.
- 39:05Speaker 3: And so was the director when he was talking to you,
- 39:07Speaker 3: do you remember the director saying, hey, young little Donald,
- 39:11Speaker 3: it feels like you might be underlining half?
- 39:16Speaker 1: They were way more interested in following the coffee. We
- 39:19Speaker 1: do fucking T-Mobile. You know what it is. Following the
- 39:22Speaker 1: coffee to the top of the hand, to my face.
- 39:25Speaker 1: And then, follow you know what I mean they were
- 39:26Speaker 1: way more interested in that than they were in my
- 39:30Speaker 1: line reading.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Could we try one Donald Jr. where you where it
- 39:34Speaker 3: feels like you're really focused on the word have and
- 39:38Speaker 3: I'm just kind of curious you know let's try a
- 39:40Speaker 3: bunch but let's just see one where you don't really
- 39:43Speaker 3: really emphasize the word have so.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Much okay got it you ready yeah You have been
- 39:49Speaker 1: gone for a while.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Let's go back to the way you did it. I
- 40:05Speaker 3: always do this dance with actors where you're like, especially
- 40:07Speaker 3: because I'm an actor. I just want to, you want,
- 40:09Speaker 3: of course you just want to be like, just say
- 40:11Speaker 3: it like this, but you're not supposed to do that.
- 40:14Speaker 3: It's like, it's like not even people don't like it.
- 40:16Speaker 3: So you have to do this whole dance. And then
- 40:19Speaker 3: a lot of actors, including myself, will be like, dude,
- 40:21Speaker 3: just tell me how you want me to say it.
- 40:22Speaker 3: And then I go, oh, okay, like this.
- 40:25Speaker 1: That's how I say it now. What do you want
- 40:27Speaker 1: me to say, man?
- 40:27Speaker 3: Just say it. Just say it over there.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Just what do you want me to say?
- 40:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I was telling everyone. And then we spoke on
- 40:33Speaker 3: the show about Bill's techniques, how he's like, his two
- 40:36Speaker 3: specialties are, you know, at the table read, you did
- 40:39Speaker 3: it like this. And then he'll make up the way
- 40:41Speaker 3: he wants it. And the person never did it like
- 40:44Speaker 3: that at the table read.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Bill, brilliant.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Brilliant. But Bill will be like, you were so funny
- 40:51Speaker 3: when you did it like this at the table read.
- 40:52Speaker 3: And the person's ego is like, oh, I did that.
- 40:55Speaker 1: That is how I did it.
- 40:56Speaker 3: That's better.
- 40:57Speaker 1: That was how I did it.
- 40:58Speaker 3: My first things think was better. And then meanwhile, the
- 41:01Speaker 3: person never did it like that. And then the other
- 41:03Speaker 3: thing he does is he just feels like he can
- 41:05Speaker 3: get around. And if he says nonsense, he'll be like,
- 41:08Speaker 3: can you be like, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
- 41:11Speaker 3: And they'll be like, oh, okay. Like he feels like
- 41:13Speaker 3: it's not a line reading if he just made gibberish noises.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I love directors that are, but I'm not going to lie.
- 41:19Speaker 1: I like directors that are like that though. I like
- 41:21Speaker 1: directors that'll be like, that'll be like, you know, the
- 41:24Speaker 1: timing is da-da-da-da-da-da-da. And then you say ba-da-ba-da-ba-ba. And then
- 41:27Speaker 1: she said ba-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. But you're different.
- 41:30Speaker 3: Some people are precious about like, don't tell me how
- 41:32Speaker 3: to say it.
- 41:35Speaker 1: You know, I get it. You know, some people don't
- 41:40Speaker 1: understand that They're part of the story, not the story.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I get that. You know what I'm saying?
- 41:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and also sometimes the director's wrong. Sometimes you just
- 41:48Speaker 3: want to hear it. Like, oh, I heard it in
- 41:50Speaker 3: my head like this. Can you just do it like
- 41:51Speaker 3: that once so I can hear it? And then they
- 41:53Speaker 3: might do it and go, oh, you know what? I'm wrong.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Keep doing it the way you're doing it. I had
- 41:56Speaker 3: to hear it, you know?
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:00Speaker 3: I had a really good time directing this new Steve
- 42:02Speaker 3: Carell show that's going to be on HBO. It doesn't
- 42:05Speaker 3: have a title yet. I think I know what the
- 42:07Speaker 3: title is, but they haven't announced it yet. And you
- 42:09Speaker 3: guys are going to love it, audience. It is a
- 42:12Speaker 3: Bill Lawrence jam. Imagine the skill of Bill Lawrence combined
- 42:17Speaker 3: with the genius of Steve Carell. It is a bop.
- 42:23Speaker 3: It's so good.
- 42:23Speaker 2: We're going to be crying.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 42:26Speaker 3: You are going to be laughing and crying. And Carell
- 42:29Speaker 3: is just the nicest person. I'm here to report. that
- 42:35Speaker 3: uh if you're a fan of steve carell he is
- 42:36Speaker 3: a gem he's such a sweet man he's so we
- 42:40Speaker 3: had just a blast working together i love.
- 42:42Speaker 1: That motherfucker goes hard in the paint.
- 42:45Speaker 3: He does he's just straight good and he's just so
- 42:48Speaker 3: kind and he's just you know it's funny he's one
- 42:51Speaker 3: of these people like de niro in a sense that
- 42:56Speaker 3: i had an experience with where Between action and cut,
- 43:00Speaker 3: he is the person you all know and love and
- 43:02Speaker 3: is so big and crazy and funny and in De
- 43:05Speaker 3: Niro's case, incredible acting. And then they call cut and
- 43:08Speaker 3: the person's like quiet and they go kind of like
- 43:10Speaker 3: just sit down in their chair and you're like, oh
- 43:13Speaker 3: my God, I had that experience with both of those
- 43:15Speaker 3: two people. I was like, wow, when they're not doing
- 43:17Speaker 3: their thing, they're kind of like quiet. And Carell is
- 43:20Speaker 3: kind of like that. He's the nicest person you'll ever meet,
- 43:23Speaker 3: but he's not like Steve Carell on, you know, he's
- 43:26Speaker 3: not like, You know, doing like Donald, you know, going
- 43:29Speaker 3: into the audience at the sitcom taping and singing Bellevue DeVoe.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Them days is over, man. I'm not doing that no more.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Really?
- 43:39Speaker 1: I'm not doing that ever again.
- 43:40Speaker 3: You're not going to be entertaining the entire crew?
- 43:42Speaker 1: People are going to start seeing the more serious side
- 43:44Speaker 1: of Donald Faison. I'm going to talk about myself in
- 43:48Speaker 1: a third person. People are going to start seeing a
- 43:50Speaker 1: more serious side of Donald Faison. I don't know if
- 43:53Speaker 1: you know this, but we're rebooting Scrubs, guys.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Yes, we are.
- 43:56Speaker 1: We've rebooted Scrubs. We are rebooting Scrubs.
- 43:58Speaker 3: And now we're 48. We're not spring chickens anymore. But
- 44:03Speaker 3: we're still silly people, Donald, you and I.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Absolutely. On camera. But when they say cut. You and
- 44:10Speaker 1: I are now going to be really serious. OK, we're
- 44:12Speaker 1: going to take.
- 44:13Speaker 3: I don't think that's not my vibe. I love and
- 44:16Speaker 3: respect it. But for me, when I'm being funny, I
- 44:19Speaker 3: kind of got to stay in like funny, silly, high
- 44:22Speaker 3: energy vibe. I'm not the guy who goes back to
- 44:24Speaker 3: his chair and opens like a book.
- 44:27Speaker 1: I'm going to do that. I'm going to start doing that.
- 44:30Speaker 1: I'm going to, I'm going to.
- 44:32Speaker 3: You're going to be trying to make the whole crew
- 44:33Speaker 3: laugh like you do in the T-Mobile commercials. I'm like, meanwhile,
- 44:36Speaker 3: we're doing T-Mobile commercials. And I'm like, dude, save some
- 44:39Speaker 3: of your energy. It's a hot ass day. We did
- 44:41Speaker 3: this last one and it was, must've been 110 degrees.
- 44:45Speaker 3: And this dude's sweating his ass off and still, still
- 44:48Speaker 3: trying to entertain and make the whole crew laugh. And
- 44:51Speaker 3: I'm like, bro, save your energy. You're sweating your balls
- 44:54Speaker 3: off right now. And like, like calm down.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Listen, I am changing that way. That way is old.
- 45:05Speaker 1: This is a freaking podcast, Faison, is what you're watching
- 45:09Speaker 1: right now.
- 45:10Speaker 3: I see. You order me.
- 45:12Speaker 1: What you're listening to is podcast, Faison. When I turn
- 45:15Speaker 1: my computer off, I'm going to get quiet.
- 45:18Speaker 3: I can't picture it. I've never seen you quiet in
- 45:22Speaker 3: front of We know we had to do this one
- 45:24Speaker 3: T-Mobile commercial where we were in front of like, it
- 45:26Speaker 3: was meant to be like an Oscar spoof. And we
- 45:28Speaker 3: were in front of like 200 people and they were
- 45:32Speaker 3: going to, you know, in post make it look like
- 45:34Speaker 3: thousands of people. But I was like, Donald, you got
- 45:36Speaker 3: to hold it together. These are 200 strangers. You need
- 45:40Speaker 3: to let, and it's so hard for him. He's got
- 45:42Speaker 3: a mic in his hand and I know he wants
- 45:44Speaker 3: to like start making them laugh and singing and like
- 45:47Speaker 3: doing standup. And I'm like, bro.
- 45:48Speaker 1: The mic was on too.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Yeah. And I was like, bro.
- 45:51Speaker 1: And it was on.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Let's have a little chat. You got to hold it together.
- 45:56Speaker 3: We don't have Daniel here to say cut that Daniel.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Yo, I learned that the hard way, bro. Oh, my gosh.
- 46:04Speaker 1: That cut that Daniel button is one of the best
- 46:07Speaker 1: buttons ever in history.
- 46:08Speaker 3: What are you going to do in your life without
- 46:09Speaker 3: cut that Daniel?
- 46:10Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. Cut that Daniel button is the best
- 46:14Speaker 1: button ever in the history of buttons.
- 46:15Speaker 3: I know. Don't you wish that in real life sometimes?
- 46:19Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Don't you wish.
- 46:22Speaker 3: That in real life, sometimes you had to cut that
- 46:24Speaker 3: down button?
- 46:26Speaker 1: Yes, I do. Yes. Absolutely.
- 46:29Speaker 3: When you like say something so cringe and embarrassing and
- 46:32Speaker 3: you're like, And at.
- 46:35Speaker 1: This moment, we're going to play all of the things
- 46:37Speaker 1: that Dan will cut. Go ahead, Dan.
- 46:39Speaker 2: No.
- 46:40Speaker 1: No, just kidding.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Just kidding. No. Dan will never manage to cut this.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Everybody likes a little ass play. Don't even act like you.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Whether it be taking a poop, whether it be a finger,
- 46:53Speaker 1: whether it be a tongue, whether it, you know, everybody
- 46:56Speaker 1: likes a little ass play.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Yeah. And he also allowed this on the air.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Eat these balls, Zach. Eat these balls, Zach.
- 47:05Speaker 3: Do you like how I'm artfully weaving in all the
- 47:07Speaker 3: sound effects to this show? It's beautiful.
- 47:10Speaker 1: I do.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:10Speaker 1: You're trying to get it all in there.
- 47:11Speaker 3: You're going to miss the sound effects machine.
- 47:12Speaker 1: You know what you're missing now. Fuck your sound effects machine. Fuck, fuck,
- 47:16Speaker 1: fuck your sound effects machine. I don't think you have
- 47:18Speaker 1: it anymore.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Well, I got them all.
- 47:21Speaker 1: What you trying to get into?
- 47:22Speaker 3: Oh, I got that, baby.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Here you go.
- 47:24Speaker 3: My New York one has a few that I don't
- 47:26Speaker 3: have here. I forgot which one it has, but we
- 47:27Speaker 3: do have this. What you trying to get into a
- 47:30Speaker 3: day or soon? What you trying to do? It's embarrassing
- 47:35Speaker 3: how much I sing that to myself in my own house.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Tell them the new song.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Which one?
- 47:42Speaker 1: The new song? The one that, what you trying to
- 47:45Speaker 1: get into.
- 47:46Speaker 3: The things you trying to get into a day or soon?
- 47:49Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 47:50Speaker 3: Oh, I don't even know what it is a day. Yo,
- 47:54Speaker 3: I don't even know what it is. I don't even
- 47:57Speaker 3: know what it is. That's a new, that's a new verse.
- 48:03Speaker 3: What did you not know?
- 48:05Speaker 5: Wait a minute.
- 48:12Speaker 3: No, because it's extenuating the song. So the song is like,
- 48:15Speaker 3: what are you trying to get into? Because Donald used
- 48:17Speaker 3: to say that.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Because I don't even know what it is. Did this
- 48:20Speaker 1: come about because you're singing it so much?
- 48:27Speaker 3: Yes, because Donald used to say, the origin of what
- 48:31Speaker 3: you're trying to get into was Donald told me that
- 48:33Speaker 3: that's how like, that was like cool guy slang for like,
- 48:36Speaker 3: what are you going to do tonight? What you're trying
- 48:37Speaker 3: to get into? And I was like, oh, I'm going
- 48:38Speaker 3: to use that. What you're trying to get into? And
- 48:40Speaker 3: then it became, what you trying to get into, Adejo,
- 48:43Speaker 3: what you trying to do? And then now I find
- 48:45Speaker 3: myself walking around the house, like trying to extend the song.
- 48:48Speaker 3: And I'm like, I don't even know what it is, Adejo.
- 48:51Speaker 3: I don't even know what it is. My dog is
- 48:59Speaker 3: just sitting there watching me as I'm like building out
- 49:01Speaker 3: this whole song.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Ew.
- 49:07Speaker 3: It's embarrassing if you knew how much I sing about
- 49:09Speaker 3: Adeyashun in my house.
- 49:11Speaker 1: I love it.
- 49:12Speaker 3: To my dog. I serenade her with Adeyashun songs.
- 49:15Speaker 1: These things make me so happy. These are the things that.
- 49:18Speaker 3: Make me happy. You know, we spend a lot of
- 49:19Speaker 3: time alone, my dog and I, so I, I sing
- 49:22Speaker 3: about you.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Right on. So what are you trying to say? You're lonely?
- 49:27Speaker 3: No, I'm not lonesome. I, I'm, I'm very happy. I
- 49:31Speaker 3: must say I'm very happy. I feel very, very blessed
- 49:34Speaker 3: and lucky and, uh, I, I can't complain about anything.
- 49:40Speaker 1: You've been working a lot lately, Zach.
- 49:43Speaker 3: I've been working a lot and I'm also, I think
- 49:45Speaker 3: there's something in hitting 50 where you're like, you know what?
- 49:48Speaker 3: I'm going to take stock. I feel very grateful. I
- 49:52Speaker 3: have my health. I love the work that I get
- 49:56Speaker 3: to do. I have good friends. I don't have a
- 49:58Speaker 3: wife and a child, which maybe will happen, maybe won't,
- 50:03Speaker 3: but I stop myself from complaining about anything because I'm just,
- 50:07Speaker 3: I realize how lucky and grateful I am. That's another
- 50:12Speaker 3: sincere moment for you. Do you want me to break
- 50:14Speaker 3: it up with this?
- 50:15Speaker 1: Zach and Donald are gay newlyweds in House Arrest. We
- 50:20Speaker 1: should make that movie. I'm going to make that. I'm
- 50:22Speaker 1: going to stop motion. By the way, that was a
- 50:23Speaker 1: guy's pitch for- We're about to be gay newlyweds in
- 50:25Speaker 1: House Arrest.
- 50:26Speaker 3: That guy is so good. And, you know, that, if
- 50:30Speaker 3: you recall, he was pitching what our new show should be.
- 50:35Speaker 1: No, yeah, I remember.
- 50:36Speaker 3: And so- House Arrest. Oh, there's another gem for you.
- 50:49Speaker 3: My pitch for the show was that when we were
- 50:52Speaker 3: thinking about doing a movie was that we finally somehow J.D.
- 50:56Speaker 3: comes into money like a patient that loved him, leaves
- 51:01Speaker 3: him her fortune or something and that he finally has
- 51:06Speaker 3: this chunk of money to make the real Dr. Dracula
- 51:09Speaker 3: movie that he's always dreamed of making.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Maybe you get to see that this year on Scrubs.
- 51:15Speaker 3: Well, maybe it could be a fantasy or something, but
- 51:16Speaker 3: I was pitching it like when we were going to
- 51:18Speaker 3: do a movie as like the main storyline for like
- 51:21Speaker 3: us all getting back together as JD came into like,
- 51:24Speaker 3: you know, this money and he gets everyone to be like,
- 51:26Speaker 3: Hey guys, one of my life's dreams was to make
- 51:29Speaker 3: the Dr. Dracula movie. Would you all be in it?
- 51:33Speaker 3: And so that was my pitch. I would love to
- 51:35Speaker 3: do a stop motion fantasy sequence. I've already pitched that
- 51:39Speaker 3: to the writers.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 51:41Speaker 3: Donald, I was asking Donald, I said, how long would
- 51:43Speaker 3: it take? Like, you know, like a 15 second or
- 51:45Speaker 3: so fantasy. And he was saying, pros, how long would
- 51:48Speaker 3: it take, Donald?
- 51:50Speaker 1: It depends on the quality of the animation. If you
- 51:52Speaker 1: want really good quality.
- 51:53Speaker 3: Well, like your shorts that you were doing with... Stupid
- 51:59Speaker 3: Buddy with Robert Chicken? No, the ones you did your own,
- 52:01Speaker 3: the little shorts you did.
- 52:02Speaker 1: That'll take... a 15 minute second one.
- 52:07Speaker 3: No 15 seconds.
- 52:08Speaker 1: 15 second uh depends on what it is but if
- 52:12Speaker 1: it's if it's really elaborate it's gonna take some time
- 52:15Speaker 1: if it's really if it's really simple it's it could
- 52:19Speaker 1: take a few hours it depends.
- 52:22Speaker 3: On like a week maybe right for 15 seconds.
- 52:25Speaker 1: For 15 seconds one animator it'll take way more than that.
- 52:28Speaker 3: No I'm saying what if you had like four animators
- 52:33Speaker 3: yeah about a About a week. I'm just trying to,
- 52:35Speaker 3: I'm trying to like talk, uh, I'm trying to sell
- 52:38Speaker 3: it to the team. Like one, one time we should
- 52:41Speaker 3: do a stop motion fantasy since we have the puppets and, uh,
- 52:46Speaker 3: and if I, so just let's, let's, let's say.
- 52:48Speaker 1: It's a week. Listen, if we, if you, I have
- 52:50Speaker 1: the guy, I got the peeps that could do it.
- 52:55Speaker 3: I got a little further along. I'm going to have you, um,
- 52:57Speaker 3: I'll probably have you put, um, Randall, our, our producer
- 53:01Speaker 3: in touch with them because I, I would love to
- 53:03Speaker 3: have it like, something they actually do and then they're
- 53:05Speaker 3: going to be like yeah but how much is it
- 53:06Speaker 3: going to cost and what's it they're going to have
- 53:09Speaker 3: all these naysayers and so if we have it locked
- 53:11Speaker 3: and loaded ready to be like no it's only gonna
- 53:12Speaker 3: be a week and it's gonna be this much money
- 53:14Speaker 3: then maybe they'll go for it can you mention your
- 53:16Speaker 3: penis so i can hit the deb willies button say
- 53:18Speaker 3: something about your penis it's brown but for fuck's sake
- 53:23Speaker 3: just stop talking about your willies there it is all
- 53:27Speaker 3: you had to say about your penis was that it
- 53:28Speaker 3: was brown.
- 53:29Speaker 1: It's I'm challenged. This is the new serious Donald Faison.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Oh, great.
- 53:34Speaker 3: That's going to be great for the new show.
- 53:39Speaker 1: This is not the, I am a serious actor now.
- 53:42Speaker 3: Because I mentioned that Carell and De Niro, when they're
- 53:45Speaker 3: not shooting, are more reserved. They are two of the
- 53:51Speaker 3: best living performers in drama and comedy.
- 53:55Speaker 1: So I'm saying if it works for them. Maybe I
- 53:58Speaker 1: need to try.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Do you think your buddy Harrison Ford is going to
- 54:00Speaker 3: win his first Emmy for shrinking?
- 54:02Speaker 1: I really hope he does.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Joel, what are his odds? I'll give you a drum roll.
- 54:09Speaker 2: If I was the voting, he would win, but let
- 54:11Speaker 2: me see.
- 54:12Speaker 1: What are the actual odds?
- 54:15Speaker 3: Um, it's very competitive this year. There's got, uh, so many, uh,
- 54:20Speaker 3: there's the, the studio is very popular. Um, what's the
- 54:24Speaker 3: Ben Stiller one? Um, Severance.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Severance.
- 54:27Speaker 3: Very popular.
- 54:27Speaker 1: So good.
- 54:29Speaker 3: All right, Daniel, go ahead. All right, cool. So you
- 54:32Speaker 3: got Ike Barinholtz for the studio.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Very funny. Never seen it.
- 54:34Speaker 3: Very funny. Coleman Domingo for the Four Seasons.
- 54:37Speaker 1: I know who he is, but never seen it.
- 54:39Speaker 3: Harrison Ford for Shrinking.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Very good. Love him.
- 54:42Speaker 3: Jeff Hiller for Somebody Somewhere.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Never seen it.
- 54:46Speaker 3: Eben Moss-Bachrach for The Bear. He's very good.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Very good actor. Love him. Never watched the show.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Michael Urie for Shrinking. Hilarious.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Love him.
- 54:55Speaker 3: And Bo and Yang for Saturday Night Live. Okay.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Love him.
- 54:57Speaker 3: I'm going to say, and I'm not biased, it's between
- 55:05Speaker 3: Michael Urie and Harrison Ford.
- 55:07Speaker 1: Wow.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Not biased at all. I would look at them and
- 55:11Speaker 2: say they put in really great work.
- 55:16Speaker 3: And they're all great. That's quite a lineup. They're all
- 55:19Speaker 3: fucking incredible. Ike Barinholtz is very, very funny in the studio. Yes, Don?
- 55:26Speaker 1: How many of these shows are coming back next year?
- 55:28Speaker 1: All of them?
- 55:30Speaker 3: I think the one with the Somebody Somewhere is over. No?
- 55:34Speaker 3: Or am I wrong?
- 55:35Speaker 1: I would say this.
- 55:36Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 55:37Speaker 1: If they're all coming back, I would give Harrison Ford
- 55:42Speaker 1: the award and let these guys go at it again
- 55:44Speaker 1: next year. Okay.
- 55:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Harrison Ford being nominated for things is rare and few.
- 55:51Speaker 3: Well, I voted.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Right on. He's been nominated for a few Oscars. He's
- 55:56Speaker 1: been nominated for a few Golden Globes. This is his
- 56:00Speaker 1: first Emmy nom. I'm going to give it to Harrison Ford.
- 56:07Speaker 3: That's just me.
- 56:08Speaker 1: No disrespect to all of the other actors. They're all great, but.
- 56:12Speaker 4: Somebody Somewhere's third season was this year, and the series
- 56:16Speaker 4: has concluded.
- 56:17Speaker 3: I knew it.
- 56:17Speaker 4: The writers have said that they are potentially interested in
- 56:20Speaker 4: revisiting the characters in a movie, but it was only
- 56:22Speaker 4: three seasons, and now it's out.
- 56:24Speaker 3: Not canceled, just the season shows up.
- 56:26Speaker 1: As long as Health is on his side, I feel
- 56:28Speaker 1: like Coleman Domingo will get another shot at an Emmy.
- 56:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:33Speaker 1: I don't know how many Harrison Ford is going to
- 56:36Speaker 1: get a shot at.
- 56:38Speaker 3: Okay.
- 56:38Speaker 1: Right. Well, these are all factors. He's never been nominated
- 56:41Speaker 1: and he's get, this is his one. You know what
- 56:43Speaker 1: I mean? This is the one you gotta get. You
- 56:45Speaker 1: gotta give it.
- 56:46Speaker 3: To him now. He's also just like, I mean, again,
- 56:50Speaker 3: I know I'm biased, but he's just so good and
- 56:53Speaker 3: fucking hilarious on the show. It's been so fun watching
- 56:56Speaker 3: him lean into comedy. And what do you see? That's
- 57:00Speaker 3: another thing I directed in, in March, I believe was
- 57:04Speaker 3: episodes three and four of the new season. And, uh,
- 57:07Speaker 3: It's so good, you guys. It's so fucking good. And
- 57:10Speaker 3: he's so incredible. Hell yeah.
- 57:14Speaker 1: He's always been incredible, though. That's my point. And that's
- 57:16Speaker 1: why he has to win the Emmy.
- 57:18Speaker 3: All right. Donald has spoken.
- 57:20Speaker 1: That's like if Denzel Washington were to do a television
- 57:23Speaker 1: show and get nominated for the Emmy, and you'd be like,
- 57:28Speaker 1: we're going to give it to.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Get out of here, man.
- 57:32Speaker 3: You can't just go, oh, you're the most famous, most popular.
- 57:35Speaker 3: I mean, ideally, you take other things into account. But
- 57:38Speaker 3: I do think that Harrison Ford's work speaks to greatness.
- 57:44Speaker 1: That's what I'm trying to say right now.
- 57:47Speaker 3: He is so enjoying this chapter of his career where
- 57:50Speaker 3: he is getting to be funny. And I think it shows.
- 57:55Speaker 3: I think it shows on screen.
- 57:57Speaker 1: And that's why they should celebrate him.
- 58:00Speaker 3: Yeah, but all those people are so talented. That's a
- 58:02Speaker 3: very tough category.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it is very tough. And may the best person win.
- 58:08Speaker 3: I think that, yeah, I think Adolescence is going to
- 58:11Speaker 3: win all the things it's nominated for, for those of
- 58:14Speaker 3: you who watched Adolescence.
- 58:15Speaker 2: It's a really riveting show.
- 58:18Speaker 3: All right, as we begin to conclude, Joel, do you
- 58:21Speaker 3: have any parting thoughts? Are you going to miss us?
- 58:24Speaker 3: What are you going to miss most about our weekly chats?
- 58:28Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I already miss you guys. You were
- 58:30Speaker 2: like a weekly stay and then suddenly we were just dying.
- 58:34Speaker 2: It's a strange transitional period. This was the first show
- 58:39Speaker 2: I ever EP'd.
- 58:40Speaker 3: You did a fantastic job.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 58:44Speaker 1: I really appreciate that. Well done.
- 58:47Speaker 3: Joelle, in all seriousness, before you continue, I just want
- 58:50Speaker 3: to take this moment on behalf of Donald and I
- 58:53Speaker 3: to say we never, ever could have done this without you.
- 58:57Speaker 3: You are such an important part of the show. You
- 58:59Speaker 3: are so interesting and talented and funny. And we instantly
- 59:05Speaker 3: wanted you to be a part of the show because
- 59:08Speaker 3: we just were like, this woman is fantastic. too charming
- 59:11Speaker 3: and interesting to have her just sit there. And, um,
- 59:15Speaker 3: from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much
- 59:18Speaker 3: for what you created.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Thank you very much.
- 59:22Speaker 2: Thank you, guys. I appreciate coming along for the ride.
- 59:25Speaker 2: I had a great time. And to our fans and
- 59:28Speaker 2: listeners over the year, like I really encourage you to
- 59:30Speaker 2: go back and listen to like some of those early interviews.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Richard Kind. I listen to the Richard Kind interview every
- 59:37Speaker 2: so often if I need a pickup. Hilarious. The Scott
- 59:40Speaker 2: Foley interview also sensational. So silly. Like I really, you know.
- 59:46Speaker 2: I think if the show did anything really cool, uh,
- 59:50Speaker 2: it was like getting a chance to sort of live
- 59:51Speaker 2: in these old memories with these really great actors who
- 59:55Speaker 2: have these long span. Like if you're a TV watcher,
- 59:59Speaker 2: like I am, you're like all these names, they pop
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: up all the time. And so getting to spend some
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: time like intimately with you guys and those performers and,
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: and learning all these backstories, like it, it was a dream.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: So I hope people continue to, to listen and, If
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: you guys want to recap your new show, call us.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I'm here.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: I'll just be at iHeart.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: Well, again, we never know what will come. I don't
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: know if it's recap or we get inspired to do
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: something else, but I do think it's good that we
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: end on a high note and while we still love
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: it as opposed to getting to a point where it
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: feels like it's not as fun anymore. A hundred percent. Daniel,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: what are your, what are your parting thoughts?
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Our great editor.
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, this has just been such a blast.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: Um, it was an awesome opportunity to get to know
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: the two of you better and to be, you know,
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: welcomed into your world a little bit. Um, it has
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: reignited my love for scrubs. Um, and just as a, um,
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: I don't know. I mean, like it's been it's been
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: such an interesting journey and all the things that have
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: come with it. I mean, you know, as a as
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: a huge fan of competition television, the fact that the
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: four of us plus Bill got to go on Family
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: Feud and win was like a lifelong dream achieved. So like,
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: you know, I can.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: Only thank you guys for that. If for nothing else,
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: we got to go on Family Feud.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: And Dale, you were the one that got the Steve
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: Harvey look away shocked face. I was trying so hard
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: for it.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I got it too, though. You did?
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: You did.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Alligator.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: Alligator, yeah. An all-time moment.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: But let's talk about this right now. Alligators... We've seen
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: the memes now. Yeah. I made alligators faint. Look, I
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: made you alligators. I made you alligators.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: No one was paying any attention to the pictures of
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: alligators climbing fences until Donald spoke up. That's true.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: I thought it was a one-off until they realized. Daniel,
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: we want to thank you, too. You're incredible, man. Thank you.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: We just thought you were the engineer and the mixer,
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: and then you've been so incredible on the show and
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: so interesting, and people love you. hearing you share. And again,
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: we never thought that you'd be such a major part
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: of the show, but thanks to, thank you so much
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: for all that you contributed. You're just, I'm going to
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: miss you guys. I'm going to miss seeing you every
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: single day. I find myself in the shower going, oh,
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: my God, I'm washing my underarms, being like, oh, that
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: would be a funny story to tell on the podcast.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: It's like ingrained. It's ingrained in my blood, saving funny
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: stories to talk about with you each week.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Hey, Daniel, will you do me a favor real quick?
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: Sure.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Drop one of them verses.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: From you?
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Great.
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: Plopped in right here. The best one. J.D.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Was like, can I freaky freak with Molly? To Elliot,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: who was hard-pressed, but probably, when I think of it,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: knew he had no chance in hell. So she sent
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: him on a quest. Feel me, watch, he fails. This
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: episode was directed by Zee Bizzle. After Garden State came out,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: so he was starting to sizzle. And Dollar Bill was like,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: I don't want the boy to fizzle. I'll let him direct.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Peep the scenario. Back like crazy shots. Improvise what you got.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Treated by a coyote. Hmm, that's kind of hot. Top pinata, chocolate.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: So's your face, Dr. Cox. Molly Shannon, Molly Locke. Zip line,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: cause she's hot. All well received by the populace. Cause
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: like Prime, ZB was an optimist. Uh, I rock it
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: like a large yuan. Serving emcees like a restaurant. You
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: could just call the faisans. That's the recap, but it
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: wouldn't be complete without shouting out DJ Daniel and Joel Monique.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Yeah, remember back in the day when Donald would write, um,
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: And I know.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Why you guys did that. That was so y'all were
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: making sure that I was actually watching the show. These
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: motherfuckers don't think I'm watching this shit. No, Donald, they hit, though.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: There was a fun segment. That was a.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: Really good segment. That was a really good segment.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: That shit was pressure.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: Do you think you're going to read the new scripts?
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: I'm sure. Absolutely.
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: It's funny because I saw an early draft of the pilot,
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: which is so fucking good. And Donald has a huge monologue.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: And I was like, bro. And I was like, Donald,
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: we're like eight weeks out. I was like, you might
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: want to take an early gander. And then Bill did
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: a whole big pass of the thing. And I was like,
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: let me quickly just flip and see if Donald's monologue
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: is still there.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: And I was like, So here's the thing.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: So you got to read the script is my point.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: In doing this podcast.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: I realized how I wasn't present, regardless of how I
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: feel about the work and how it came out and
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: stuff like that. The first run of Scrubs, for the
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: most part, I wasn't really present. I was very, I
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: don't think a lot. I think we were very young.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I think we were very, I was very immature. And
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: I smoked a lot of weed. I still do, but
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: I smoked quite a bit and still was trying to
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: work and do it. And so because of that, I
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: missed out on a lot, like learning my lines or
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: reading scripts or I was having fun at a club.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: I intend to lock in on this. You know what
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I mean? These past five years have been really eye-opening
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: experiences on what can change in your life when you
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: focus a little bit different, when you focus in just
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: a little bit more. And so I intend to lock
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: in on this. I'm very excited. This is a chance to,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, stretch my abilities as an
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: actor and learn more as an actor. I have nine
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: episodes to, and with my best friend too, I have
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: nine episodes with my best friend to try and tell
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: a story. And I intend on doing that. And I'm
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: really excited about it.
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: That's awesome. And I, and I, and I, and I'm
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: glad to hear that. And yeah, we are so lucky
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: to have this opportunity and I think we should fucking
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: bring it.
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: You know, this is, and to the audience, you know,
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: we're going to do that. We're still figuring out what
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: the show is. And obviously it's going to have the
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: same tone and silliness you love. um but uh please
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: i i imagine if you're listening to this you're probably
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: going to be curious to check it out please uh
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: please check it out um coming soon to abc a
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: network show my god wow wow it's a network show
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: donald it's a lot of.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: If you got rabbit ears you got abc.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Yeah all you need is rabbit ears true the antennas
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: i mean people listening probably don't even know what rabbit
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: ears are we're too old it It even took me
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: a second to be like, what are they talking about?
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: Rabbit ears was the nickname for just an antenna. You
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: don't need... So kids listening, you could literally just put
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: up an antenna and plug it into a TV and
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: you will get ABC. Back in the day. Still, to
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: this day.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Can you still do that? Absolutely.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: Yes. Oh, really? They look different. Oh, okay.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: They don't look like rabbit ears anymore, but you can get...
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: You can get the networks from the air.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: No, that's awesome.
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: Well, I don't know what else to say. I love
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: you guys.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: I love you too. Love you, dog. I love you guys.
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: It's been so much fun. This has been so much fun.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: We've spent five years doing this. Wow. Think of the
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: things we've gone through, the things in our life we've
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: gone through, the ups and downs.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: Dude, we went through COVID, man. We went through COVID?
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: We started off with COVID. Yeah. We started off with COVID.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: I hope people like what we did. I'm kind of
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: sad now. I think they loved it.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: You know, it's never goodbye forever. You know what I mean?
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Nothing ever really dies. In the words of Luke Skywalker,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: nothing ever really dies.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: I think it's important for you to end this podcast
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: with a Star Wars quote. And it's from Yoda.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Do or do not. There is no try. Five, six, seven, eight.
