Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hi wants again. Everybody, thank you for latching on to
- 0:14Speaker 1: the latest edition of Birds Weekly. It is presented by
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Inside the Birds Network. That man is the guru
- 0:20Speaker 1: of Eagles football. Ray didn't youer? I'm Derek Gunn and
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Eagles. Oh my goods, not just the Eagles. What
- 0:25Speaker 1: a horrible weekend for sports fans in this region. From
- 0:29Speaker 1: Penn State getting upset by a winless team to the
- 0:32Speaker 1: Phillies losing game one, and then of course there's the
- 0:36Speaker 1: Eagles where Lady Luckett shining on them for four consecutive games,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but she frowned on them in game number five against
- 0:42Speaker 1: the Denver Broncos and raid you know, for the fifth
- 0:45Speaker 1: consecutive game. This offense does not play a complete four quarters.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And the thing that perplexes me is, unlike the defense,
- 0:53Speaker 1: the offense basically came back relatively intact. Everybody was back
- 0:57Speaker 1: from a year ago. But yet this can't seem to
- 1:01Speaker 1: put it together for sixty minutes of football. I've given
- 1:04Speaker 1: my opinion time and time again. I'll give it again,
- 1:06Speaker 1: but after you so you have the floor.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Well, I mean we've talked about it every week. I mean,
- 1:12Speaker 2: even though the only thing that's different about this week
- 1:15Speaker 2: is they lost, but a lot of the same problems
- 1:17Speaker 2: were there the four previous weeks. It's just that kind
- 1:19Speaker 2: of got papered over by the fact that they won.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But it's nothing new. I mean a lot of these
- 1:25Speaker 2: same problems were out there. Run defense has not been
- 1:29Speaker 2: good all year, and it came back and haunch of
- 1:31Speaker 2: this game. Passing game has been up and down, more
- 1:35Speaker 2: down than up, and you five weeks in, you still
- 1:39Speaker 2: haven't gotten Saquon barklay on track, all of those things.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And you know, for four weeks they were able to win,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and nobody wanted to hear about those issues. Everybody's want
- 1:50Speaker 2: to say, you know, the four four to zero, you
- 1:53Speaker 2: know one twenty out of twenty one and all that stuff,
- 1:56Speaker 2: what are you complaining about? And you and I were
- 1:59Speaker 2: kind kind of you know these people voices in the
- 2:02Speaker 2: wilderness saying, no, I think you got to sort of
- 2:05Speaker 2: look at something problems here because at some point they're
- 2:07Speaker 2: going to come back and bite you. In fact, remember
- 2:10Speaker 2: when you and I did the show last week and
- 2:11Speaker 2: you were asked me for prediction. I said, I'm I'm
- 2:15Speaker 2: really feeling about that the Broncos could win this game.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And I said, LOUI I can't. I can't and good
- 2:22Speaker 2: conscience pick against the Eagles until I actually see him
- 2:25Speaker 2: lose a game. Okay, but I just had a feeling,
- 2:28Speaker 2: Derek coming into this, I had a feeling it was
- 2:30Speaker 2: a bad matchup the Denver team. Everybody's looking at two
- 2:34Speaker 2: and two, not that great, two losses on the road,
- 2:38Speaker 2: the fact that the Broncos have not been a factor
- 2:41Speaker 2: in a long time. I think the people in Philadelphia
- 2:43Speaker 2: kind of lost track of just how good this team
- 2:46Speaker 2: was and how much on the come they are under
- 2:48Speaker 2: Sean Payton, and especially that defense. I mean, they had
- 2:52Speaker 2: two really good corners and Moss, and they have two
- 2:55Speaker 2: terrific edge rushers and led the Lincoln sacks last year
- 3:00Speaker 2: and are on their way to leading the league of
- 3:01Speaker 2: sacks this year. I mean, they can play. And you know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: they have a young quarterback, but he's a young quarterback
- 3:06Speaker 2: who plays like a veteran quarterback. So I just saw
- 3:10Speaker 2: that this was this was a this is one hundred
- 3:13Speaker 2: yards of land mines waiting in front of the Eagles
- 3:15Speaker 2: in this game, and it came back and it got them.
- 3:17Speaker 2: And you know, you can always say, and we should
- 3:21Speaker 2: probably say in fairness, you know they are four and one.
- 3:24Speaker 2: You know they're going through a tough part of their schedule.
- 3:26Speaker 2: We all agreed coming into the year is a tough
- 3:28Speaker 2: part of the schedule that came out of a four
- 3:30Speaker 2: and one with what appeared to be some easier games
- 3:33Speaker 2: coming up. So you're not in bad shape. But the
- 3:37Speaker 2: fact is there are issues here and maybe you and
- 3:40Speaker 2: I can maybe explain some of that.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I think we have to start with the with the
- 3:46Speaker 1: offensive line. You know, three fifths of the offensive line
- 3:51Speaker 1: went into this game nicked up, you know, Lane Johnson,
- 3:55Speaker 1: Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson, and there's not any continue
- 4:00Speaker 1: up front. And when you look at both offensive lines,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I mean, we're focusing on the offensive line, but they
- 4:06Speaker 1: continuously lose the trench warfare. And we're not used to scene,
- 4:10Speaker 1: especially this offensive line that we that spoiled us with
- 4:13Speaker 1: mowing people over game in and game out of season ago.
- 4:17Speaker 1: They can't get out of their own way, missing blocking assignments,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, a lot of mental mistakes. And again I
- 4:24Speaker 1: go back to what I initially said, I know that
- 4:26Speaker 1: they're nicked up a little bit, but you know, I've
- 4:28Speaker 1: always been of the impression rate. Everybody's hurt in the
- 4:32Speaker 1: National Football League at this point of a season. Everybody
- 4:34Speaker 1: has some aches and pains. But if you strap on
- 4:37Speaker 1: that uniform and you step out on the field, it
- 4:39Speaker 1: tells me you're well enough to play. And this offensive
- 4:42Speaker 1: line has not played anywhere close to what we were
- 4:46Speaker 1: accustomed to.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Scene. Yeah. Yeah, it's an old done Shola expression. If
- 4:51Speaker 2: you're hurt, you don't play. But if you play, you're
- 4:54Speaker 2: not hurt. You know, that's nobody's going to feel sorry
- 4:57Speaker 2: for it if you got the uniform on your around
- 4:58Speaker 2: on the field. But I think realistically, when we look
- 5:02Speaker 2: at the offensive line, they just look beat up to me.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You know, we know, we know what Landon Dickerson's been
- 5:08Speaker 2: going through, and he's trying to play through it. This
- 5:11Speaker 2: last game, he just couldn't do it. He got an
- 5:13Speaker 2: ankle injury on top of everything else that's wrong with him.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Lane Johnson has been on and off the field down
- 5:19Speaker 2: a couple of weeks, so clear he's been he's been
- 5:21Speaker 2: dealing with something. Jurgens I still feel has never really
- 5:25Speaker 2: fully come back from his back surgery. I mean it's
- 5:28Speaker 2: been and that's that's sort of what you're dealing with
- 5:31Speaker 2: up there. I mean, if you look at you talk
- 5:33Speaker 2: about the quote unquote skill positions, same guys as last year,
- 5:39Speaker 2: same quarterback, same running back, same wide routes, same tight end.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So you know what's different, Well, it's the offensive line
- 5:48Speaker 2: right now. And you know the Eagles. I mean, they
- 5:50Speaker 2: are all kinds of stats, but there's a stat out
- 5:54Speaker 2: there called negative negative runs, negative plays, and the Eagles
- 5:59Speaker 2: lead the its where they didn't get back to the
- 6:02Speaker 2: line of scrimmage and that's mostly number twenty six. Now,
- 6:05Speaker 2: why is that? Is it him? I think I've had
- 6:08Speaker 2: people ask me, you know, I think he's lost a
- 6:11Speaker 2: step from last year. You know, all that work, that
- 6:13Speaker 2: whole workload, all those carries, all those touches, and I'm saying,
- 6:17Speaker 2: I don't think so, I don't think it's him. And
- 6:20Speaker 2: you saw I think all the people that were saying that,
- 6:23Speaker 2: you know, sa Quan's lost a step. Anybody saw that
- 6:25Speaker 2: wheel route that he ran. He has not lost a step. Okay,
- 6:30Speaker 2: So the difference in this running game right now, it
- 6:34Speaker 2: ain't him. Okay, It's somewhere else. And it's probably a
- 6:37Speaker 2: combination of the offensive line, which is not playing like
- 6:40Speaker 2: it has in the past. And let's face it, we
- 6:42Speaker 2: were spoiled. I mean the last couple of years that
- 6:44Speaker 2: offensive line was so good we just assumed every game, Oh,
- 6:47Speaker 2: they're just going to win the battle at the line
- 6:48Speaker 2: of scrimmage. There's no question about that, doesn't matter who
- 6:50Speaker 2: the opponent is, They're just going to dominate. But they're
- 6:53Speaker 2: not dominating now. And the combination of that and would
- 6:58Speaker 2: I find to be some puzzling play call I think
- 7:01Speaker 2: has kind of got this offense spinning its wheels.
- 7:04Speaker 1: How does your offensive coordinator Kevin Patula and not know
- 7:07Speaker 1: that a defensive front like Denvers is gonna come after you.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I mean they came after him from the outset. They
- 7:14Speaker 1: had six official sacks and I don't know how many
- 7:18Speaker 1: official hits they had on Jalen. But how do you
- 7:21Speaker 1: go into a game not understanding that Denver, which went
- 7:24Speaker 1: into this game leading the NFL and quarterback sacks with fifteen,
- 7:29Speaker 1: just basically man handled the Eagles offensive line. Now, granted,
- 7:32Speaker 1: they do blitz a lot. Ray there were times when
- 7:35Speaker 1: I saw not only one safety, but both safeties blitzing
- 7:38Speaker 1: for Denver on the same play, And I'm thinking, how
- 7:42Speaker 1: do you not counter that, and we keep harping on
- 7:46Speaker 1: Kevin Patula, but the issues run much deeper than him.
- 7:49Speaker 1: But you have to start somewhere. And for whatever reason,
- 7:53Speaker 1: he's still five games into a season can't call a
- 7:56Speaker 1: consistent game plan or a game plan that can put
- 7:59Speaker 1: a defense on his heels consistently.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it does feel as though last year you felt
- 8:05Speaker 2: like after Week four five, when they made that change
- 8:09Speaker 2: in offensive philosophy and went with the running game, you
- 8:13Speaker 2: felt from that point on that the Eagles were the
- 8:17Speaker 2: Eagles offense was dictating to the other team's defense. They
- 8:20Speaker 2: were controlling them. The Eagles offense was doing whatever they
- 8:23Speaker 2: wanted to do. Defense were trying all kinds of things,
- 8:26Speaker 2: but the Eagles offense was running the show out there.
- 8:29Speaker 2: That's not true now, and you get the feeling that
- 8:32Speaker 2: the defense is now their defense is now calling the
- 8:35Speaker 2: shots against the Eagles offense because they've got them bottled up.
- 8:39Speaker 2: How do you reverse that? I you know, I think
- 8:42Speaker 2: that one of the things you had to anticipate coming
- 8:44Speaker 2: into this season was with the success that the Eagles
- 8:47Speaker 2: had last year running the ball with that philosophy in
- 8:51Speaker 2: this personnel, and then you win the Super Bowl, Well,
- 8:55Speaker 2: you knew coming into this year. What happens to all
- 8:58Speaker 2: Super Bowl champions is everybody's studies, their tape. You have
- 9:01Speaker 2: the whole off season to study that offense and all
- 9:04Speaker 2: the things that you couldn't quite figure out last year.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Now you've got six months to figure them out. And
- 9:09Speaker 2: so every game you're coming into this year, teams have
- 9:13Speaker 2: their own idea what's the best way to stop your offense.
- 9:16Speaker 2: And what we're seeing now is just a very heavy,
- 9:20Speaker 2: over and over again dose of all out blitzes, run blitzes,
- 9:26Speaker 2: zone blitzes, I mean all kinds of pressure and people
- 9:29Speaker 2: just up at the line of scrimmage. And that's what
- 9:32Speaker 2: you're running into right now. And the combination of that
- 9:35Speaker 2: and the fact that your offensive line is clearly struggling
- 9:39Speaker 2: right now with due to injuries and again somewhat what
- 9:45Speaker 2: I just think is is poor execution, which we didn't
- 9:48Speaker 2: see last year but we're seeing now, has got this
- 9:51Speaker 2: offense being very herky jerky, and I you know, when
- 9:55Speaker 2: a team, when an offensive team is really in sync,
- 10:00Speaker 2: for the lack of a better term, the way the
- 10:02Speaker 2: Eagles were last year, there is an absolute rhythm to
- 10:06Speaker 2: the play calling. I mean, everything just kind of falls
- 10:08Speaker 2: into place, and one play leads to another, sets up another,
- 10:12Speaker 2: and you can just feel the rhythm of the offense
- 10:14Speaker 2: moving and other than the second half of the Rams game,
- 10:21Speaker 2: when you were playing desperation football with no huddle and
- 10:25Speaker 2: running a hurry up, then the only time this year
- 10:27Speaker 2: that you really kind of felt like the Eagles offense
- 10:29Speaker 2: looked like it had some semblance of a rhythm. I mean,
- 10:32Speaker 2: I've had some good stretches here and there, but nothing
- 10:35Speaker 2: that you could feel like, Yether're in control of the
- 10:37Speaker 2: game right now, That's kind of where they are, and
- 10:40Speaker 2: until they find that, you know, every game and maybe
- 10:44Speaker 2: even a game against a bad team like the Giants
- 10:46Speaker 2: this week, could turn out to be a struggle.
- 10:49Speaker 1: You surprised that we're not more designed running plays for
- 10:52Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts. I mean, you know, he's okay passer, but
- 10:57Speaker 1: he can kill you with his legs as well. And
- 10:59Speaker 1: I was surprised, no quarterback drugs, no quarterback sprint outs.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I'm just sitting as shocked that, especially when Denver identified
- 11:08Speaker 1: early in the game they were coming after you, that
- 11:11Speaker 1: they didn't call more designed running plays for Jane and
- 11:13Speaker 1: we saw him do it the first four games of
- 11:15Speaker 1: the season where he dropped back a step fake like
- 11:17Speaker 1: he was gonna pass take off running. I don't understand
- 11:19Speaker 1: why there's not more designed running plays for this guy.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I mean, we don't want to see a quarterback take
- 11:24Speaker 1: unnecessary hits, which a lot of quarterbacks do. But this
- 11:27Speaker 1: guy is so strong in the lower body strength, and
- 11:30Speaker 1: he does a great job of getting down, feeling when
- 11:32Speaker 1: the press is coming and getting down. So why not
- 11:35Speaker 1: run him more to make that defense play a little
- 11:38Speaker 1: bit more honest against you.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I think it's one of the things they have to
- 11:42Speaker 2: think about and they have to reevaluate. I mean, yesterday
- 11:46Speaker 2: two rushes for three yards. It's ridiculous. You know, that's
- 11:50Speaker 2: not the best utilization of your quarterback, and just simply
- 11:53Speaker 2: not when the quarterback is this guy and you have
- 11:56Speaker 2: that kind of thing, I mean, our two for eleven
- 11:59Speaker 2: on third down, which you're not going to win many
- 12:01Speaker 2: games being that. Uh, And you know you get up
- 12:05Speaker 2: seventeen to three going to the fourth quarter at home
- 12:09Speaker 2: and then you go punt punt, punt punt. Why and
- 12:16Speaker 2: in the second half. This is two weeks in a
- 12:17Speaker 2: row that you and I are on here talking about
- 12:21Speaker 2: some anomaly in the offense. Last week, it's the Jalen
- 12:25Speaker 2: Hurts goes the whole second half without completing a pass.
- 12:29Speaker 2: This game, you go a whole second half, sa Quon
- 12:32Speaker 2: Barkley has one rushing attempt. Those are things that you
- 12:35Speaker 2: just say, no, that, no, that that that's a misprint,
- 12:38Speaker 2: that that can't possibly be right. But it is. And
- 12:41Speaker 2: when you see those kinds of things right in front
- 12:43Speaker 2: of you, you say, whoa, you know, we got to we
- 12:45Speaker 2: got to take this offense apart and start really looking
- 12:48Speaker 2: at it and there's something really amiss here and where
- 12:51Speaker 2: is it? What is it? You know? And we went
- 12:54Speaker 2: through the whole week with you know, the Aja Brown
- 12:56Speaker 2: stuff and is he unhappy? Does he want to be
- 12:59Speaker 2: traded or that unhappy with him? Are they going to
- 13:01Speaker 2: trade him? That's all the conversation that's going on. And
- 13:05Speaker 2: is it an issue? I guess, But to me, there
- 13:08Speaker 2: are more fundamental exras and those issues that have to
- 13:10Speaker 2: be dealt with to put this team back to where
- 13:13Speaker 2: it needs to be.
- 13:15Speaker 1: You talk about fundamentals of the game, and when you
- 13:18Speaker 1: have a running back like sa Kwon Barkley, even if
- 13:21Speaker 1: the running game is not running, you still run him
- 13:23Speaker 1: to give the allusion to the opposition that you're going
- 13:26Speaker 1: to run the football. But when he carries the ball
- 13:27Speaker 1: six times for thirty yards, that's a problem because.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Look at Denver.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Denver is not a great running team, but they were
- 13:34Speaker 1: averaging one hundred and forty three yards per game rushing. Now,
- 13:37Speaker 1: the Eagles held him to a buck thirty, but in
- 13:40Speaker 1: the second half when they made their comeback, the running
- 13:43Speaker 1: game was a significant part of their game. Sure, And
- 13:46Speaker 1: I don't understand the Eagles had what eleven total rushing
- 13:50Speaker 1: attempts in this game compared to thirty eight passes? Are
- 13:53Speaker 1: you kidding me? When you got the best running back
- 13:55Speaker 1: in all of football over the last year plus and
- 13:58Speaker 1: basically heal off the field's uniform virtually clean because you're
- 14:03Speaker 1: not using them.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Yep, yep. And you know, one of the one of
- 14:08Speaker 2: the biggest weapons this team has, like it or not,
- 14:12Speaker 2: is the tush push, and they weren't even in situations
- 14:15Speaker 2: where they could use that, you know, I mean this
- 14:19Speaker 2: was a game where But still, to get back to
- 14:22Speaker 2: your point about Barkley and the running game, I don't know.
- 14:28Speaker 2: It's always to me, it's been pretty simple philosophy that
- 14:34Speaker 2: if you're up seventeen to three in a game and
- 14:37Speaker 2: you got Saquon Barkley in the backfield, that's where you
- 14:40Speaker 2: just you just you just run it out. I mean
- 14:43Speaker 2: it's and when they were a team last year, when
- 14:45Speaker 2: they were on their run, I mean, there were some
- 14:49Speaker 2: games last year where they got in the fourth quarter
- 14:51Speaker 2: and they just put the game away, you know. I
- 14:53Speaker 2: mean that they'd be up ten going into the fourth
- 14:55Speaker 2: quarter and they would go off on one of these
- 14:57Speaker 2: eight minute drives and when it was over, it was over.
- 15:01Speaker 2: You know that. I mean, that's you've got a two
- 15:03Speaker 2: touchdown lead at home. That's when you that's when you
- 15:06Speaker 2: you're hand it off to your running back and that's
- 15:09Speaker 2: how you put that's how you close out the game.
- 15:12Speaker 2: And in that situation, Barkley's not getting the ball. Look,
- 15:16Speaker 2: I know that the running game has not been anything
- 15:20Speaker 2: even close to what it was last year, But if
- 15:22Speaker 2: you're ever going to turn to it, if you're ever
- 15:24Speaker 2: going to give it a chance, that's the time to
- 15:27Speaker 2: do it. And the fact that they went completely away
- 15:31Speaker 2: from it is one of the things that I'm saying,
- 15:34Speaker 2: what's going on within the four walls down there. I mean,
- 15:37Speaker 2: one of these coaches and players talking about because right now,
- 15:40Speaker 2: I mean, it's a it's an overused term in all sports,
- 15:44Speaker 2: especially football, but there is truth in it in the
- 15:47Speaker 2: idea of an identity. What is your identity? And this
- 15:51Speaker 2: team on the way to the Super Bowl last year, men,
- 15:53Speaker 2: they had a clear identity. There was no question who
- 15:56Speaker 2: they were and what they were going to do right now,
- 15:59Speaker 2: that's you know, And until they find that, until they
- 16:04Speaker 2: find that, it's gonna be every week is going to
- 16:07Speaker 2: be a struggle.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I'm assuming they already do. But I think Nick Siriani,
- 16:13Speaker 1: Kevin Petullo, Jalen Hurts need to get behind closed doors.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Sirianni needs to tell Patullo what he likes and doesn't
- 16:20Speaker 1: like about his play calling. Jalen Hurts needs to tell
- 16:23Speaker 1: Patullo what he likes and doesn't like about the offensive
- 16:27Speaker 1: structure and how to play more to his strengths.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I need to.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I think they need to strip the offense down and
- 16:34Speaker 1: rebuild it. Now. Understand it's a short week coming up,
- 16:36Speaker 1: but they need to rebuild this offense from the ground up.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I mean, because what they've put on the field for
- 16:42Speaker 1: five weeks, they were able to slip by four times.
- 16:45Speaker 1: But that's not gonna happen continuously. We saw what happened
- 16:48Speaker 1: with Denver, which was a two and two team. And
- 16:51Speaker 1: although you have a stretch of games here, a three
- 16:53Speaker 1: game stretch of games where you should win these games,
- 16:56Speaker 1: you still have a bunch of games coming up against
- 16:58Speaker 1: some heavyweights. And don't think they're not going to attack
- 17:01Speaker 1: you the same way Denver did.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Mm hmm yep. Oh they will. They will. I mean,
- 17:06Speaker 2: every every team is learning from the team before, and
- 17:09Speaker 2: every team has had some degree of success and slowness
- 17:11Speaker 2: off of town. They've certainly had success in slowing down
- 17:14Speaker 2: the running game. Uh so how are you going? So
- 17:16Speaker 2: how are you going to deal with that?
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 17:19Speaker 2: Your idea of sort of a sit down there among
- 17:23Speaker 2: the quarterback and the offensive staff, I think, yeah, I
- 17:27Speaker 2: think we're I think we're at that point. Now. This
- 17:30Speaker 2: week doesn't afford you very much time because you've got
- 17:33Speaker 2: to play on Thursday. But I think it's something that
- 17:35Speaker 2: has to be done. I remember, this sounds Derek, this
- 17:39Speaker 2: sounds so simple. But I remember, I remember years ago,
- 17:45Speaker 2: when I was still a writer, I was doing a
- 17:47Speaker 2: piece about Joe Montana. When Joe Montana was great, you know,
- 17:52Speaker 2: after he had had his coming out party and was
- 17:55Speaker 2: winning Super Bowls and stuff and trying to put together
- 17:58Speaker 2: a story about how he got there, how he became
- 18:02Speaker 2: Joe Montana. And I interviewed Mike, Mike Holmbren, who was
- 18:08Speaker 2: the offensive coordinator for the forty nine ers at that time,
- 18:12Speaker 2: and I said, how did you know, how did Joe
- 18:15Speaker 2: grow into this position to become the player that he is?
- 18:18Speaker 2: And he said, you know, when he was a young player,
- 18:20Speaker 2: he wasn't great every week, you know, I mean he
- 18:22Speaker 2: wasn't he went through some of the things that a
- 18:24Speaker 2: lot of young quarterbacks do, he said, But when he
- 18:27Speaker 2: would have a couple couple bad games and you can
- 18:29Speaker 2: see he was affecting his confidence, he said. I'd call
- 18:33Speaker 2: him in the office and I'd hand him the playbook
- 18:37Speaker 2: and I'd say, Joe, go through there and pick out
- 18:41Speaker 2: the plays that you feel good about, you know, the playbook.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Just go through there and just circle them, check them off,
- 18:49Speaker 2: whatever it is. But you go through there and you
- 18:51Speaker 2: pick out the plays that you feel good about, that
- 18:54Speaker 2: you feel confident in executing. I don't care if it's
- 18:58Speaker 2: eight plays out of it, out of a three hundred
- 19:01Speaker 2: page book. If that's all you got, that's all you got.
- 19:04Speaker 2: But that's where we're going to start the game plan next.
- 19:06Speaker 2: That's where I'm going to start making the game plan
- 19:08Speaker 2: up because if you there's no it doesn't do any
- 19:11Speaker 2: good at all for me on the sidelines to be
- 19:15Speaker 2: sending in plays that you don't believe in. That's not
- 19:17Speaker 2: going to help anybody you. Let's start off with you
- 19:20Speaker 2: telling me what you feel good about and then I'll
- 19:24Speaker 2: work from there. And to me, that seems so logical,
- 19:29Speaker 2: it's so obvious. But you know, he's the only coach
- 19:33Speaker 2: I ever heard that worked that way. But to me,
- 19:36Speaker 2: it seems like when you are in a situation like
- 19:39Speaker 2: this where a team is sort of floundering on offense
- 19:41Speaker 2: and trying to figure out how to get out of it,
- 19:45Speaker 2: that's not a bad place to start is go to
- 19:47Speaker 2: the quarterback and say, you tell me what you want
- 19:49Speaker 2: to run, and let's see and let's see if you
- 19:51Speaker 2: feel good, if you feel good about it, let's start
- 19:53Speaker 2: building right there. And I think the Eagles are kind
- 19:56Speaker 2: of at that point. Now they have to they have
- 19:58Speaker 2: to figure it out, They have to find a way
- 19:59Speaker 2: to get Barkley wanned loose and they have to find
- 20:03Speaker 2: a way to be able to get their ace receivers
- 20:05Speaker 2: open in big spots and right now they just don't
- 20:08Speaker 2: have it. And some of the play calling just to
- 20:09Speaker 2: me is odd to me. I mean, there were situations
- 20:13Speaker 2: in this game where we saw facing a blitz, knowing
- 20:17Speaker 2: the blitz is coming, that you have all your receivers
- 20:20Speaker 2: are running vertical routes. Yes, everybody's running away from the
- 20:23Speaker 2: quarterback and he has no hot read, he has no
- 20:26Speaker 2: easy outlet, is no easy throw. That's how you wind
- 20:29Speaker 2: up with a quarterback like Hert's taking six sacks, you know,
- 20:32Speaker 2: and that's that's just a breakdown in your system. That's
- 20:36Speaker 2: just a fundamental breakdown in the system that has to
- 20:38Speaker 2: be dealt with and corrected.
- 20:41Speaker 1: You know, two things that caught my ear after this game.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Sequin Barkley said, we're now facing adversity and Jalen said
- 20:49Speaker 1: at the podium and said we have to focus. And
- 20:53Speaker 1: I'm thinking, why are we talking about focus five games
- 20:56Speaker 1: into a season. But if you go back through the game,
- 20:59Speaker 1: they had five pre snap penalties and nine penalties all together. Now,
- 21:04Speaker 1: obviously you know Denver had more penalties. I believe they
- 21:07Speaker 1: had twelve and the Eagles at nine penalties but rate
- 21:11Speaker 1: five pre snap penalties. It's unacceptable, unacceptable for a veteran
- 21:16Speaker 1: unit that has been together, and even when they bring
- 21:19Speaker 1: in substitutes, the substitutes.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Have been with this team.
- 21:22Speaker 1: But the five pre sep snap penalties is unacceptable for
- 21:25Speaker 1: an offense like this.
- 21:27Speaker 2: You're right, and some of them are five penalties in
- 21:30Speaker 2: the fourth quarter. Oh, I mean that's how that's how
- 21:33Speaker 2: you blow a fourteen point lead in the fourth quarter.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Is playing dumb football, and they did. But some of
- 21:40Speaker 2: it seems to me to be part of it is
- 21:46Speaker 2: players don't seem to be coming in quickly enough. It
- 21:50Speaker 2: seems like there are too many instances where things are
- 21:54Speaker 2: being done at the line of scrimmage. Guys are shifting
- 21:56Speaker 2: and it's like the last second you're ticking off the seconds.
- 22:00Speaker 2: For example, the illegal the illegal shift, the illegal double
- 22:04Speaker 2: motion that wound up with the penalty on Barkley that
- 22:08Speaker 2: took away a thirty yard pass play at a smith
- 22:12Speaker 2: in a big spot, to me, was really a function
- 22:16Speaker 2: of the play came into late and two men go
- 22:20Speaker 2: in motion and Barkley, who knows what he's supposed to do,
- 22:24Speaker 2: does not have time to get there and get set
- 22:26Speaker 2: long enough for it to be illegal play. It isn't
- 22:29Speaker 2: that he didn't It isn't that he was confused. It
- 22:31Speaker 2: isn't that he didn't know what he was supposed to do.
- 22:34Speaker 2: He knew what he was supposed to do, but by
- 22:36Speaker 2: the time he got there, he didn't have that extra
- 22:38Speaker 2: second to set and make it illegal play. You know,
- 22:42Speaker 2: that's you know, that's not his fault. I mean, that's
- 22:45Speaker 2: a communications thing, and that tells me that there's some
- 22:49Speaker 2: sort of confusion or disconnect from the booth to the
- 22:53Speaker 2: guy on the sidelines who's calling a play and getting
- 22:55Speaker 2: into the quarterback. That shouldn't happen. I mean, there are
- 22:59Speaker 2: other things. Oh and while we're talking about penalties, Yeah,
- 23:03Speaker 2: I thought I thought this was a horribly officiated game.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I thought it was a harble. But I've had a
- 23:10Speaker 2: lot of people say to me, the Eagles lost this
- 23:13Speaker 2: game because of the officials. No, the Eagles lost this
- 23:16Speaker 2: game because the Eagles lost this game. I mean, the
- 23:20Speaker 2: Broncos had twelve penalties. But I just thought it was
- 23:24Speaker 2: a very very poorly poorly officiated game. And I think
- 23:29Speaker 2: there's is he too much of that in the NFL now, Derek,
- 23:32Speaker 2: You know, I mean, the NFL is so busy about
- 23:35Speaker 2: worrying about what teams they're sending to Germany, what teams
- 23:38Speaker 2: they're sending to London, what teams are sending to Ireland.
- 23:41Speaker 2: You know, I'm not as concerned about that as I
- 23:45Speaker 2: am getting the game here right, and they have This
- 23:50Speaker 2: is another topic for another day, but to me, they
- 23:53Speaker 2: have a major issue with the officiating in this league
- 23:55Speaker 2: because it just isn't very good and the inconsistency from
- 23:58Speaker 2: week to week is appalling.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Why do you think the officiating is so watered down?
- 24:03Speaker 1: Because it wasn't that long ago when we would applaud
- 24:06Speaker 1: the officiating. I mean, they were on point more times
- 24:09Speaker 1: than up. But now you're right across the board. You
- 24:11Speaker 1: watch any football game and it's like you're going, how
- 24:14Speaker 1: do you miss this? Especially when you have replay? How
- 24:17Speaker 1: do you still miss this? Why do you think the
- 24:20Speaker 1: officiating has become so watered down?
- 24:25Speaker 2: I don't know. I think that part of it is
- 24:30Speaker 2: that I think they've changed the rules so much, They've
- 24:36Speaker 2: redefined the rules so much, They've put so much subjective thought,
- 24:42Speaker 2: they put so much of that in the minds of
- 24:45Speaker 2: the officials trying to interpret what the intent is on
- 24:47Speaker 2: a play as opposed to just calling the play, trying
- 24:50Speaker 2: to think of what was what was the thought and
- 24:52Speaker 2: process going into that. I think they've made I think
- 24:55Speaker 2: they've taken the rule book which used to be like this,
- 24:58Speaker 2: and they've kind of made it like this now. And
- 25:01Speaker 2: I you know, I don't think it's for a lack
- 25:04Speaker 2: of work. I'm sure these guys are prepared. They study
- 25:06Speaker 2: their tape, they know the rules, they have to take
- 25:08Speaker 2: a written test to get on the field. But I
- 25:11Speaker 2: think there is so much gray area in now, what's
- 25:16Speaker 2: a catch, what's a football move? You know, where all
- 25:19Speaker 2: of that kind of stuff they never had to worry
- 25:21Speaker 2: about before, never used to have to worry about being
- 25:24Speaker 2: second guests. By instant replay. There's so much more for
- 25:27Speaker 2: the officials, information for them to process, and the game
- 25:31Speaker 2: just keeps moving faster that I'm sympathetic to a point
- 25:36Speaker 2: because I think it's a really hard job. I think
- 25:38Speaker 2: it's a really tough game to officiate now the way
- 25:40Speaker 2: it is, But you have to find a way to
- 25:43Speaker 2: do better than what we're doing right now and what
- 25:47Speaker 2: you were just saying ago. Certain things you just see
- 25:50Speaker 2: that is so obvious? How did you not call that?
- 25:54Speaker 2: I thought, and this is not being a homer, because
- 25:56Speaker 2: I think people know me well enough to know that
- 25:58Speaker 2: I'm not on that last on that last play, the
- 26:01Speaker 2: Dallas Goddard down the I mean he's he's being held
- 26:06Speaker 2: for like twenty yards. It's not just it's not just
- 26:09Speaker 2: one bit of contact. I mean the guy is hanging
- 26:11Speaker 2: on them and hitting them for about twenty yards down
- 26:14Speaker 2: the field. And the officials interpretation after the game, when
- 26:18Speaker 2: he was asked to explain that said, well, we just
- 26:21Speaker 2: felt that there was hand fighting between both guys and
- 26:25Speaker 2: kind of a play. We just feel like it's it's
- 26:28Speaker 2: you know, it's it's fairs fair and we're not going
- 26:31Speaker 2: to throw a flag. I didn't see that. I saw one.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I saw one guy that to me was committing obvious
- 26:38Speaker 2: pass interference on a play that's going to decide the game.
- 26:42Speaker 2: And the officials kept their fighting in their pocket on
- 26:44Speaker 2: a day when they were throwing flags all over the place,
- 26:47Speaker 2: on that play, they choose to keep it in their pocket.
- 26:49Speaker 2: To me, that's bad officiating.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, you know not you're not a homer,
- 26:55Speaker 1: but a lot of times we expect teams to get
- 26:59Speaker 1: those holes, you see that. We see that a lot
- 27:02Speaker 1: where teams get that home call and the visiting team
- 27:06Speaker 1: does not. But in this case, you talk about egregious.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. And that was the defining moment in
- 27:14Speaker 1: the game. Now, granted, the Eagles never should have been
- 27:16Speaker 1: in that position to begin with, but to me, that
- 27:18Speaker 1: was a defining moment in the game because if he
- 27:20Speaker 1: gets that, they're inside the five yard line with a
- 27:24Speaker 1: chance to score that that that winning touchdown. But yes,
- 27:27Speaker 1: you know, but Lloyd Beerhol, it doesn't happen, you know, right.
- 27:31Speaker 2: And while we're on the subject of officiating, the other
- 27:35Speaker 2: call that absolutely had a direct direct correlation to the
- 27:40Speaker 2: winning and losing was the officials choosing to pick up
- 27:44Speaker 2: the flag on the intentional grounding. I mean, that's that's
- 27:48Speaker 2: a huge play there. That is a I don't I
- 27:52Speaker 2: didn't really have as big a problem as a lot
- 27:54Speaker 2: of people had with the Zach bond head.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 28:00Speaker 3: who hit a five leg parlay week one and he
- 28:02Speaker 3: wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Sounds like Kaplan, right, Yeah, yeah, it could be him.

- 30:26Speaker 3: link below.
- 30:27Speaker 4: We're in the show notes and support the show because
- 30:31Speaker 4: to me you know the way the game's being officiated now,
- 30:35Speaker 4: you know, any kind of play out in the open
- 30:36Speaker 4: like that, it's an easy call for them to make.
- 30:39Speaker 2: You could say it's borderline at the time. It hurts
- 30:43Speaker 2: the Eagles for sure, but I understood why they threw
- 30:46Speaker 2: that flag. The intentional grounding, to me was so obvious
- 30:52Speaker 2: that I was amazed when they picked the flag up.
- 30:56Speaker 2: But that is a big play right there. I mean
- 30:59Speaker 2: that allows to keep to maintain possession, go down and
- 31:02Speaker 2: score and that I mean that had a big swing
- 31:06Speaker 2: in the game. And then you have to play with
- 31:07Speaker 2: Goddard at the end. So I know people were upset
- 31:10Speaker 2: with the officials and they felt that they had unimpacted
- 31:13Speaker 2: on a game, but I think they did. But it's
- 31:15Speaker 2: too easy to say that the officials took this game
- 31:18Speaker 2: away from the Eagles. No, it's the Eagles had a
- 31:20Speaker 2: lot to do with what happened here too.
- 31:22Speaker 1: You know, going back to talking about mental mistakes and
- 31:25Speaker 1: lack of focus, and when Bond pounced on the ball carry,
- 31:29Speaker 1: I immediately said they're going to flag him for that,
- 31:31Speaker 1: and sure enough they did. And then after the game,
- 31:32Speaker 1: Bonn admitted he has to be smarter than that, and
- 31:36Speaker 1: I think we're seeing not just AJ and DeVante frustration.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I think we're seeing more frustrations across the board in
- 31:44Speaker 1: terms of how this team is playing overall, on both
- 31:46Speaker 1: sides of the football. And I think that particular penalty
- 31:49Speaker 1: was evident of that because Bond is a lot smarter
- 31:52Speaker 1: than that. You normally don't see him do something like that.
- 31:54Speaker 2: No, No, he's he's like the last person you would
- 31:58Speaker 2: expect to do something that way, and he knew when
- 32:02Speaker 2: it was over. I saw his interview and he didn't
- 32:06Speaker 2: try to dodge it. I mean he kind of said, yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 2: I shouldn't have done that. I mean, was it a
- 32:10Speaker 2: vicious hit? Was he attempting an injine?
- 32:12Speaker 1: No?
- 32:13Speaker 2: But it was late. It was late, and it was
- 32:15Speaker 2: right out there in the open, and in today's NFL
- 32:19Speaker 2: that's going to be called more often than not. But
- 32:21Speaker 2: that's in that spot. It really hurts it because the
- 32:24Speaker 2: kid's safety had come up and made a big play
- 32:26Speaker 2: and the big, big third down tackle right there, and
- 32:29Speaker 2: it looks like you're going to get him off the
- 32:31Speaker 2: field and then all of a sudden they get new life. Now.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Of course, AJ brings a lot of attention to himself
- 32:38Speaker 1: because of what he said or did not say a
- 32:40Speaker 1: week ago. And lo and behold, he's a center of
- 32:44Speaker 1: conversation again. After this game, the deep ball Jalen throws
- 32:47Speaker 1: to him. You know, initially you say, man, Jalen missed
- 32:50Speaker 1: him by a mile, But when you look at the replay,
- 32:52Speaker 1: he slows up and then goes, oh my goodness, the
- 32:55Speaker 1: ball's coming to me and tries to speed it up.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Too late. By then, after the game he says, I
- 33:00Speaker 1: didn't see the ball. I didn't think I thought the
- 33:02Speaker 1: ball was already thrown somewhere else. And then all of
- 33:04Speaker 1: a sudden, I see the ball and it's too late.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Are you willing to give aj a bit of grace
- 33:10Speaker 1: in this case or we've we've debate debated Seth and
- 33:14Speaker 1: Mark Farzette and I if you, even if you're the decoy,
- 33:19Speaker 1: you have to keep running at full speed. You have
- 33:21Speaker 1: to keep running at full speed. Or are you willing
- 33:23Speaker 1: to give him some grace in this particular case?
- 33:26Speaker 2: Now you got to keep rying. I mean, you got
- 33:28Speaker 2: you got to play it out. And you know, I
- 33:32Speaker 2: don't think I can't read his mind, but I mean
- 33:36Speaker 2: he's he's too good not to know that. Uh and listen,
- 33:41Speaker 2: that's a big play right there. I mean, everybody said,
- 33:44Speaker 2: I mean, what I heard today and what I read
- 33:47Speaker 2: was that Hurts had him wide open and missed him. Yeah. Yeah,
- 33:51Speaker 2: Well okay, I guess that's maybe how it looked. But
- 33:55Speaker 2: if you look at the way aj runs the pattern,
- 33:57Speaker 2: who's really a fault there? I mean, all the one
- 34:00Speaker 2: thing you can say for sure is it is a
- 34:02Speaker 2: huge missed opportunity, because that's that's you don't get that
- 34:07Speaker 2: wide open in the NFL very often, but when you do,
- 34:10Speaker 2: you got to get seven points out of it. And
- 34:14Speaker 2: in that one, if that had happened at that point
- 34:16Speaker 2: in the game, Degals would have won. I mean because
- 34:19Speaker 2: because Denver to that point had shown you very little
- 34:22Speaker 2: on offense. Yeh, they looked. I think all you needed
- 34:26Speaker 2: at seventeen to three was one more big play like that,
- 34:29Speaker 2: and it would have it would it would have put
- 34:31Speaker 2: it would have put the nail in. And when they
- 34:34Speaker 2: didn't get that, and then they had turned the ball over,
- 34:37Speaker 2: then Denver gets the ball and they start. Then all
- 34:39Speaker 2: of a sudden, they make a couple of plays, they
- 34:40Speaker 2: get a little momentum, and now they're back in the game.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I'll tell you. I mean, nobody wants to talk about
- 34:46Speaker 2: the Broncos at this point, but I think it's worth mentioning.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Uh.
- 34:51Speaker 2: I think Nicks is going to be a really good quarterback.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I was going to ask you about him. Yeah, yeah,
- 34:55Speaker 2: I I really you know, I look, I saw who
- 34:59Speaker 2: would you compare him.
- 34:59Speaker 1: To at this stage.
- 35:08Speaker 2: You I think Fangio has said it last week. Uh,
- 35:12Speaker 2: and Baker Mayfield, and I thought I thought, okay, it's
- 35:17Speaker 2: going to bang comparison, and then watching him, Yeah, Baker Mayfield,
- 35:20Speaker 2: he really reminds me of Baker Mayfield. He's got the
- 35:23Speaker 2: same kind of mobility, same kind of willingness to run,
- 35:27Speaker 2: the same kind of cockiness about him at that kind
- 35:32Speaker 2: of obvious leadership kind of quality that the guys in
- 35:35Speaker 2: the huddle respond to and mix clutch throws, you know,
- 35:39Speaker 2: and can go through a stretch where he can play
- 35:41Speaker 2: poorly for a quarter and then all of a sudden
- 35:45Speaker 2: bank turn it on fourth quarter. In this game, he
- 35:47Speaker 2: was nine for ten through for one hundred and seventy
- 35:51Speaker 2: yards or something in the fourth quarter against this defense.
- 35:56Speaker 2: He's really good. I mean, you saw it last year
- 35:58Speaker 2: the second half of the year, the way he came one,
- 36:00Speaker 2: and you know, I think that I think Sean Payton's
- 36:04Speaker 2: got himself his quarterback right now. And you know, you
- 36:07Speaker 2: look at where the Broncos are now three and two,
- 36:10Speaker 2: and you look at the next four or five games
- 36:12Speaker 2: they've got. I mean, they got a string of easy
- 36:14Speaker 2: games coming. I mean, I was looking at the schedule
- 36:16Speaker 2: last night. They could easily run run off five wins
- 36:20Speaker 2: and they do that. They're eight and two, and yeah,
- 36:22Speaker 2: they could. They could. I'm not gonna say run away
- 36:25Speaker 2: with that division. Yeah, but I mean it would not
- 36:27Speaker 2: shock me when it's all said and done, that they're
- 36:29Speaker 2: that they're looking back at the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Speaking of Sean Payton, seven thirty six left in the game,
- 36:37Speaker 1: Evan Ingram scores the touchdown to get the Broncos within
- 36:41Speaker 1: one point. You automatically think that Denver is gonna kick
- 36:45Speaker 1: the extra point tie a game and try to win
- 36:47Speaker 1: it with a field goal or potentially a touchdown. Oh no, now,
- 36:50Speaker 1: Sean Payton. And I said this in our postgame show.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I've watched Sean Payton a long time when he had
- 36:56Speaker 1: that guy named Drew Brees at quarterback down in New Orleans,
- 36:59Speaker 1: and he goes against conventional wisdom all the time. I
- 37:04Speaker 1: was not surprised one bit. He went for two points
- 37:07Speaker 1: and bo Nicks put that ball right on the money.
- 37:09Speaker 1: They called the perfect play at the perfect alignment against
- 37:13Speaker 1: the perfect quarterback that they wanted to and Kiley Ringo
- 37:17Speaker 1: and man did he deliver a strake. Were you surprised
- 37:19Speaker 1: with that much time left in the game, almost a
- 37:20Speaker 1: half of a quarter left in the final quarter, that
- 37:24Speaker 1: he decided to go for two instead of the tie?
- 37:26Speaker 2: Yes? I was, Okay, I was. I was, even though
- 37:32Speaker 2: I know Peyton too, and I know that he's willing
- 37:35Speaker 2: to take chances in situations like that. But that's the
- 37:38Speaker 2: only time this season, in the whole NFL through five weeks,
- 37:41Speaker 2: that any coach in that situation has chosen to go
- 37:46Speaker 2: for two rather than the tie. That's the only time
- 37:49Speaker 2: a coach this year across the board, out of all
- 37:52Speaker 2: thirty two teams, has made that decision. Speaks volumes about
- 37:56Speaker 2: the kind of play caller and gambler that Peyton can be,
- 38:00Speaker 2: But it also speaks volumes of how much confidence he
- 38:03Speaker 2: has in his young quarterback to make that play. I
- 38:07Speaker 2: mean you said earlier, Sean did a lot of things
- 38:10Speaker 2: that were sort of out in the margins in New Orleans.
- 38:15Speaker 2: But that was when he had Drew Brees, when he
- 38:17Speaker 2: had a veteran Hall of Fame quarterback who you can
- 38:20Speaker 2: take some chance of the guys like that, But to
- 38:22Speaker 2: do the same kind of thing with a young quarterback
- 38:25Speaker 2: like Nicks was pretty telling, both on the part of
- 38:28Speaker 2: the coach and the player. And it was obvious that
- 38:32Speaker 2: that was a play that they had in the book.
- 38:33Speaker 2: That was a play that they had in for this
- 38:35Speaker 2: game as a two pointer right from the jump. I mean,
- 38:37Speaker 2: you saw the way they lined up that they were
- 38:40Speaker 2: going that was the play that was in They practiced
- 38:42Speaker 2: all week. They were going to go to it. Now
- 38:44Speaker 2: you didn't know in what the scoreboard is going to
- 38:47Speaker 2: be telling you at that spot. This was their number
- 38:49Speaker 2: one two point play that if they were going to
- 38:52Speaker 2: go to it, this is what they were going to
- 38:53Speaker 2: go to. And they caught the Eagles of the perfect
- 38:56Speaker 2: and just the wrong matchup with Ringo and Courtland, and
- 38:59Speaker 2: there you go. You got the two points, and now
- 39:01Speaker 2: all of a sudden they're ahead, and now you're playing
- 39:04Speaker 2: ketchup for the first time, and then everything and everything
- 39:07Speaker 2: in the stadium changes.
- 39:09Speaker 1: They could not in that fourth quarter get very much
- 39:11Speaker 1: pressure at all on bow Nicks, and he just sat
- 39:14Speaker 1: back there and he took them apart. When you look
- 39:16Speaker 1: at where the Eagles are, first of all, they don't
- 39:18Speaker 1: have any sacks to begin with. They desperately missed Nolan Smith.
- 39:22Speaker 1: They have one QB sack from an edge rusher, and
- 39:24Speaker 1: that's Zadarius Smith, who they brought in after the season started.
- 39:29Speaker 2: I can't understand.
- 39:30Speaker 1: I thought they were gonna be when you when you
- 39:33Speaker 1: consider the volume of talent they'd lost in terms of
- 39:35Speaker 1: pass rushers. I was thinking, even with the young guys
- 39:38Speaker 1: they had his holdovers, that they were in pretty decent
- 39:42Speaker 1: shape in terms of pressure edge people. But uh uh
- 39:46Speaker 1: and and I can't pinpoint why. But they're not getting
- 39:49Speaker 1: home with any frequency whatsoever.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Right, No, they're not. You look through five games, you
- 39:55Speaker 2: got four and a half sacks and that's your that's
- 40:01Speaker 2: not good. And you said it. I was going to
- 40:04Speaker 2: mention it, but he said, they've gotten one sack from
- 40:07Speaker 2: an edge rusher this year, and that's from Zadarius Smith,
- 40:10Speaker 2: who's a guy that you just picked up off the street,
- 40:13Speaker 2: basically been playing on a sixteen and he's been your
- 40:17Speaker 2: best pass rusher from the edge. You know you've got
- 40:21Speaker 2: We keep talking about the fact that a lot of
- 40:24Speaker 2: it has to be generated by Jalen Carter on the inside,
- 40:26Speaker 2: which is probably true. But you've got to get some
- 40:29Speaker 2: pressure from the edge too, and they're just not you know,
- 40:33Speaker 2: Ojomo has been I think pretty good. I think Davis
- 40:36Speaker 2: has played well, but they're not getting the production from
- 40:40Speaker 2: the edges. I mean, losing Smith hurts. I'll tell you,
- 40:44Speaker 2: I am disappointed in Jylex Hunt. I really thought what
- 40:47Speaker 2: he had showed late last year and then again in
- 40:50Speaker 2: the postseason, I really thought, well, you know, you've lost
- 40:53Speaker 2: some guys. You know, you lost Sweat, you lost BG.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I mean, you've lost some edge guys. But you know,
- 40:58Speaker 2: I'm looking at a guy like Hunt and said, you know,
- 41:01Speaker 2: I think with more playing time, more snaps, more opportunities,
- 41:04Speaker 2: you know, I think he's going to come in and
- 41:06Speaker 2: really play well. And I think he's going to come
- 41:08Speaker 2: in and get a lot of pressure, get some sacks,
- 41:12Speaker 2: get some pressure. I think he's going to be I
- 41:13Speaker 2: think he's going to be up to the task. And okay,
- 41:17Speaker 2: five games. I don't want to pass final judgment, but
- 41:20Speaker 2: to this point. I got to tell you, Derek, I'm
- 41:22Speaker 2: a little disappointed, you know, I thought the kid would
- 41:25Speaker 2: have more of an impact because he's certainly getting the snaps,
- 41:27Speaker 2: he's certainly on the field a lot, but he's not
- 41:30Speaker 2: getting to the quarterback the way I thought he would.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Well, the best way to get the taste of a
- 41:36Speaker 1: loss out of your mouth is to get back on
- 41:39Speaker 1: the horse again real quick, and the Eagles would do
- 41:41Speaker 1: that come Thursday night against the New York Giants up
- 41:44Speaker 1: in the Middlelands. And of course the Giants play a
- 41:47Speaker 1: lot better at home than he doing the road, so
- 41:49Speaker 1: that should be an interesting matchup indeed, because it is
- 41:51Speaker 1: a divisional matchup, fast and furious coming out of that
- 41:54Speaker 1: Denver game, the Eagles right now getting ready to face
- 41:58Speaker 1: a big divisional opponent, the New York Giants, and right
- 42:02Speaker 1: the best way to get that taste out of your
- 42:03Speaker 1: mouth is get right back of the horse again. And
- 42:07Speaker 1: I don't want to I don't want to speak out
- 42:09Speaker 1: a turn, but I do think this is the perfect
- 42:11Speaker 1: opponent for the Eagles to play to get rid of
- 42:15Speaker 1: the taste of an l.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I agree, I agree, I have you and I have
- 42:25Speaker 2: talked very often about my feeling about Thursday night football.
- 42:29Speaker 2: I hate it. I hate it. If I was I've
- 42:31Speaker 2: been asked if you were the NFL commissioner, what's the
- 42:33Speaker 2: first thing you would do, And I said, the first
- 42:35Speaker 2: thing I would do would be banned Thursday night football.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I just hate it. But I agree with you in
- 42:43Speaker 2: the Eagle situation right now, I think Thursday night is
- 42:47Speaker 2: a great way to go because you got the Giants
- 42:50Speaker 2: coming off a horrendous loss to a winless New Orleans
- 42:55Speaker 2: team one Sunday. I mean, their morale has got to
- 42:59Speaker 2: be shattered, you know. Jackson Darby, they thought was never
- 43:03Speaker 2: going to lose a game, has plays a game like
- 43:06Speaker 2: a rookie. Okay, And if you're the Eagles, you know,
- 43:11Speaker 2: did you really want to spend a couple of extra
- 43:13Speaker 2: days wallowing in the misery of the game that you
- 43:16Speaker 2: gave away here against Dendro I don't think. So that's
- 43:20Speaker 2: the best thing for everybody is to get out there
- 43:23Speaker 2: on Thursday on the short week, go up to New York,
- 43:26Speaker 2: where you've had a lot of success over the years,
- 43:29Speaker 2: and go win a football game, you know, and then
- 43:32Speaker 2: get an extra couple of days off before you have
- 43:34Speaker 2: to go and play Minnesota after that. But I think
- 43:37Speaker 2: it's a great opportunity to get this one out of
- 43:40Speaker 2: your system, go up beat a very eminently beatable opponent,
- 43:45Speaker 2: and kind of get this season back on the tracks.
- 43:48Speaker 2: And I'm not talking about, you know, going up there
- 43:51Speaker 2: and playing two quarters and winning by a field goal.
- 43:54Speaker 2: I'm talking about going up there and just blowing this
- 43:56Speaker 2: team out of the stadium. Because if you're if you're
- 43:59Speaker 2: half good as what we thought the Eagles were going
- 44:02Speaker 2: to be this year, that's what you should do to
- 44:04Speaker 2: this Giants team.
- 44:06Speaker 1: You mentioned Jackson dark and obviously Russell Wilson's better days
- 44:11Speaker 1: are behind him. They put in this young kid their
- 44:13Speaker 1: first round draft pick, twenty fifth overall, and his first start,
- 44:18Speaker 1: he leads them to an upset win, and everybody's dancing
- 44:21Speaker 1: and singing that they found their franchise quarterback. And then
- 44:24Speaker 1: this past Sunday against the Saints, he came back down
- 44:27Speaker 1: to earth a little bit. He and a couple of touchdowns,
- 44:29Speaker 1: but he also threw a couple of picks. But obviously
- 44:32Speaker 1: he does have potential. A lot of people when he
- 44:36Speaker 1: came out of college were comparing him to Gardner Minshew,
- 44:39Speaker 1: and I compared him to a Bo Nick's type quarterback.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Where do you see him in terms of his ability,
- 44:45Speaker 1: which is basically critiqued as a quarterback with good accuracy,
- 44:50Speaker 1: sometimes takes a little bit too long to get rid
- 44:53Speaker 1: of the football and sometimes hesitates to make a decision,
- 44:58Speaker 1: but has moxy about it like a bo Dix has
- 45:01Speaker 1: moxie about not afraid to play the.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Game the way it should be played, right. No, I
- 45:07Speaker 2: I liked him a lot when I saw him playing college.
- 45:10Speaker 2: I thought he was going to be really good. Uh.
- 45:12Speaker 2: And actually I thought that the Giants were really smart
- 45:16Speaker 2: trading back into the first round to get him, because
- 45:20Speaker 2: to me, I think he's got the stuff to be
- 45:21Speaker 2: a winning quarterback in the NFL. I do. Uh. I
- 45:24Speaker 2: mean I heard people make the comparison to Gardner Minshew.
- 45:27Speaker 2: To me, this kid is way better, way better than
- 45:30Speaker 2: Gardner Minshew. I mean, I mean, you could come up
- 45:33Speaker 2: with other comparisons than that, but he's way better than him. Uh.
- 45:36Speaker 2: And yeah, I think he will be a good player.
- 45:38Speaker 2: But you know, I think people over overreacted to the
- 45:42Speaker 2: to the first win because you know, listen, I saw
- 45:45Speaker 2: the Giants in the preseason a couple of times I
- 45:47Speaker 2: saw him when they played the Jets, and I saw
- 45:49Speaker 2: many by the Patriots, and and this kid played a lot,
- 45:52Speaker 2: and and he looked really good. I mean, he really
- 45:55Speaker 2: looked good. And that's why I think I had a
- 45:59Speaker 2: real feeling that it wasn't going to be too deep
- 46:01Speaker 2: into this season that they were going to make the
- 46:03Speaker 2: move to him. And so here he is and first game, Yeah,
- 46:07Speaker 2: he played really good. This game, he played like a rookie.
- 46:09Speaker 2: That's the way is the rookie quarterbacks up and down.
- 46:12Speaker 2: But historically, okay, if you look at this kind of
- 46:16Speaker 2: a matchup, you know, a rookie quarterback, and he is
- 46:19Speaker 2: a true rookie quarterback. Yeah against Vic Fangio's against Vic
- 46:23Speaker 2: Fangio's defensive play calling generally doesn't go well. I mean,
- 46:27Speaker 2: that's that's the kind of record we all remember Jim
- 46:30Speaker 2: Johnson back in the day here. I mean, Jim Johnson
- 46:33Speaker 2: never lost to like a first or second year quarterback.
- 46:35Speaker 2: I mean, he just used to turn those kids inside out.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Vic similarly has has the same kind of history. And
- 46:43Speaker 2: you know, I think that is We're going to talk
- 46:45Speaker 2: about all kinds of matchups coming into this game, but
- 46:48Speaker 2: to me, that's the one that's maybe the biggest advantage
- 46:50Speaker 2: of the Eagles had is Vic Fangio against the rookie quarterback.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Two questions in one.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Are you surprised he went as low as he did
- 46:58Speaker 1: in the first round, or surprise he went in the
- 47:01Speaker 1: first round?
- 47:01Speaker 2: Altogether?
- 47:02Speaker 1: I thought he would go like second round, maybe early
- 47:05Speaker 1: third round.
- 47:07Speaker 2: No, I thought he was going in the first round. Okay,
- 47:09Speaker 2: I thought he would go in the first round because
- 47:12Speaker 2: in all of the postseason stuff, all the workouts, all
- 47:17Speaker 2: of the individual workouts Indianapolis, all of that postseason stuff.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Like I thought he had a really good season anyway,
- 47:26Speaker 2: But then in that next step, that postseason run up
- 47:30Speaker 2: to the draft kind of preparation, the interviews, the individual workouts,
- 47:34Speaker 2: the testing, all that stuff, he was really really good.
- 47:37Speaker 2: I think probably what you said is high third round
- 47:41Speaker 2: kind of thing is probably what people were thinking at
- 47:44Speaker 2: the end of the season. But he was really good
- 47:47Speaker 2: and really impressive in everything after that, and you just
- 47:51Speaker 2: felt you just heard his stock going up. But you know,
- 47:55Speaker 2: I liked him a lot even before that, and I
- 47:58Speaker 2: you know, I had a low forerund great on him
- 48:01Speaker 2: anyway coming out, So to me, I thought he was
- 48:04Speaker 2: probably going to go somewhere in round one.

- 50:13Speaker 2: But I thought the Giants listen, You're not going to
- 50:17Speaker 2: get a whole lot of people that are going to
- 50:18Speaker 2: be standing on the side of the Giants in terms
- 50:20Speaker 2: of personnel decision making, right right, I mean, given what
- 50:24Speaker 2: happened with Saquon Barkley last year, and given what's happened
- 50:28Speaker 2: with Daniel Jones going to Minnesota after they let him walk,
- 50:31Speaker 2: you know, maybe you shouldn't be saying the Giants person
- 50:34Speaker 2: talking favorably about Giants personnel decisions. But I thought when
- 50:39Speaker 2: they made the move to trade back into the first round, look,
- 50:42Speaker 2: getting Carter was an obvious one the top of the round.
- 50:44Speaker 2: I mean that he is a good player, but to
- 50:47Speaker 2: make the move to come back and get the kid
- 50:49Speaker 2: that could be your next quarterback, I thought it was
- 50:52Speaker 2: a pretty good decision. And I still think. I still
- 50:54Speaker 2: think Dart's going to be that.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Guy is a dual card, the next great one in
- 50:59Speaker 1: terms of defensive lineman. I mean, or is it still
- 51:03Speaker 1: too early in his career to determine that to even
- 51:05Speaker 1: mention that. But obviously when you go that high number
- 51:08Speaker 1: three overall, you have a special talent.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think he is, and I think he's
- 51:13Speaker 2: going to show it. You know, if I have one
- 51:16Speaker 2: concern about the Eagles coming into this game is the
- 51:19Speaker 2: Giants aren't pretty good. I mean, that's pretty much stating
- 51:22Speaker 2: the obvious there. But the one thing that they do
- 51:24Speaker 2: have is that their front is pretty good. I mean,
- 51:28Speaker 2: they're front four. They can get after the passer, and
- 51:33Speaker 2: right now the Eagles aren't playing real well up there,
- 51:36Speaker 2: you know, and we've seen Jalen hurts and feeling a
- 51:41Speaker 2: lot of pressure. So far, he's been bottled up, haven't
- 51:44Speaker 2: been able to break away on any runs, and there's
- 51:47Speaker 2: been a lot of free runners coming at him because
- 51:49Speaker 2: of all the Blitzer is There's been a lot of
- 51:50Speaker 2: guys getting pressure, and the Giants can do that. There
- 51:54Speaker 2: isn't a whole lot that they can do well, but
- 51:57Speaker 2: rush the quarterback is something they can do well. Right now,
- 52:00Speaker 2: the Eagles are in this because of some of the
- 52:03Speaker 2: issues they have an offensive line and probably some of
- 52:05Speaker 2: the issues they have in their overall offensive structure are
- 52:08Speaker 2: not protecting the quarterback very well. So if the Giants
- 52:11Speaker 2: have one chance of pulling off the upset here, that's
- 52:13Speaker 2: where it is. I think also.
- 52:18Speaker 1: One of the key Giants players they don't have a
- 52:20Speaker 1: lot of great players, but I think one of the
- 52:22Speaker 1: keys is to watch their linebacker Brian Burns. I think
- 52:25Speaker 1: he's one of the better underrated linebackers in the National
- 52:27Speaker 1: Football League. Giants have ten quarterback sacks. He has five
- 52:31Speaker 1: of them and he's a two time pro bowler. I
- 52:33Speaker 1: don't think he gets enough accolades for the type of
- 52:35Speaker 1: player that he is because he's very disruptive when he's healthy.
- 52:39Speaker 1: He's had injury problems, but when he's healthy, he's very
- 52:42Speaker 1: disruptive and he has been and I agree with you.
- 52:46Speaker 1: I think he's a good player.
- 52:47Speaker 2: And you know, Timpodeau is sort of in and out.
- 52:52Speaker 2: I mean, some weeks you don't even know he's on
- 52:54Speaker 2: the field. The other weeks he looks like a first
- 52:57Speaker 2: round traf pick. You know, you got Carter in there,
- 52:59Speaker 2: who's I mean, he's a handful, and he got Dexter Lawrence,
- 53:03Speaker 2: you know, in the middle. So I mean, they've got
- 53:06Speaker 2: good people on the defensive line. And if the Eagles
- 53:10Speaker 2: don't shore up their pass protection, you know, that's the
- 53:13Speaker 2: one area where the Giants might have a little bit
- 53:15Speaker 2: of advantage. And that's the one area where I think
- 53:17Speaker 2: the Eagles really and Jeff Stoutlin and the offensive lineman
- 53:20Speaker 2: really have to spend a lot of time preparing because
- 53:23Speaker 2: that's the one area where I think the Giants will
- 53:25Speaker 2: be competitive in this game.
- 53:26Speaker 1: Now, this is a Giants defense that's Taylor made for
- 53:30Speaker 1: this Eagles offense to get right. You know, I like
- 53:33Speaker 1: to talk about get right games when you're coming out
- 53:36Speaker 1: of a bad game. I mean, it's a Giants defense
- 53:39Speaker 1: that is currently ranked twenty sixth overall in the National
- 53:42Speaker 1: Football League. They're giving up three hundred and seventy seven
- 53:45Speaker 1: yards a game, they're giving up one hundred and forty
- 53:48Speaker 1: yards rushing a game, and almost twenty five and a
- 53:51Speaker 1: half points a game. What more could you ask for,
- 53:54Speaker 1: Ray in terms of a tailor made defensive opponent. To
- 53:57Speaker 1: get your offense right for the first time this season,
- 54:01Speaker 1: not over a quarter, not over a half, but over
- 54:04Speaker 1: sixty minutes of football should be.
- 54:07Speaker 2: I mean, all of everything you just said is true.
- 54:10Speaker 2: And if you if you look at it logically and
- 54:13Speaker 2: you just look at it on paper, yeah, I mean
- 54:15Speaker 2: you you would certainly think that I've talked about the
- 54:19Speaker 2: fact that the Giants are pretty good upfront on defense
- 54:21Speaker 2: than they are you know, they got lots of problems
- 54:25Speaker 2: in the back end, and the Eagles will have an
- 54:28Speaker 2: opportunity to make plays there with all of their receivers
- 54:31Speaker 2: in this game. If they can protect the quarterback, you know,
- 54:35Speaker 2: if they can if they can keep Jalen nerds comfortable there,
- 54:39Speaker 2: he can have he can have a big day and
- 54:41Speaker 2: all of those guys will get fed. You know, aj
- 54:44Speaker 2: will get fed, Devonte' get fed. They'll all get it
- 54:47Speaker 2: because you can make a ton of big plays against
- 54:50Speaker 2: this secondary, but you got to block the guys up
- 54:52Speaker 2: front first.
- 54:54Speaker 1: You know, this is a Giants team to me, like
- 54:57Speaker 1: a jackal and high type team. Obviously, they can't find
- 55:01Speaker 1: their way in the road. They had five turnovers against
- 55:04Speaker 1: the Saints. They have eight for the season. Their minus
- 55:07Speaker 1: five and the takeaway giveaway department. But when they're playing
- 55:10Speaker 1: at home and they've only won one game, but they
- 55:13Speaker 1: did hold Kansas City at home to twenty two points,
- 55:16Speaker 1: and they held a pretty good Chargers team to eighteen
- 55:19Speaker 1: points at home. And I agree with you one hundred
- 55:22Speaker 1: percent the Eagles should blow this team out. But number
- 55:25Speaker 1: one is a divisional game. Number two, for whatever reason,
- 55:29Speaker 1: they seem to be a little bit more comfortable in
- 55:31Speaker 1: their environment than they are in the road.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Yeah, although I don't know, we all know how what
- 55:38Speaker 2: Eagles games up in that stadium sound like, you don't
- 55:41Speaker 2: have Giants had a home field advantage against it. They
- 55:45Speaker 2: had a significant home field advantage against Chiefs, you know,
- 55:47Speaker 2: and they did against Chargers. It ain't going to be
- 55:50Speaker 2: that way with the Eagles, because we've seen Eagles Giants
- 55:53Speaker 2: games up there in recent years and it sounds like
- 55:56Speaker 2: an Eagles home game. So I think the idea that
- 55:59Speaker 2: they have a certain home field advantage is probably neutralized
- 56:02Speaker 2: by the fact that the Eagles will have so many
- 56:04Speaker 2: people up there, I expect, and also just judging by
- 56:09Speaker 2: what I'm kind of here and coming out of New
- 56:11Speaker 2: York after that fiasco in New Orleans, that people are
- 56:15Speaker 2: really disgusted the Giants fans are, you know, I think
- 56:18Speaker 2: they came in and you know, shame on me. I
- 56:22Speaker 2: kind of bought some of it. I saw a couple
- 56:25Speaker 2: of preseason games, saw him against the Jets. I'm against
- 56:27Speaker 2: the Patriots. Thought they looked pretty good. I liked Dart
- 56:30Speaker 2: a lot. I like their defensive line. And it might
- 56:35Speaker 2: have even been with you that we were talking about
- 56:36Speaker 2: it and I said, I think the Giants are going
- 56:38Speaker 2: to be a surprise team this year that I think
- 56:40Speaker 2: right now I would pick them to finish ahead of
- 56:42Speaker 2: the Cowboys if you asked me a bold prediction. That
- 56:46Speaker 2: would have been in well five weeks in now. Giants
- 56:50Speaker 2: kind of looked like the Giants. You're at a but
- 56:53Speaker 2: we're at a point now with the Eagles where they
- 56:56Speaker 2: can't afford to take anything for granted. I mean, to me,
- 56:59Speaker 2: this is a game the Eagles have to go up there,
- 57:00Speaker 2: and as we both said, just take control right away.
- 57:03Speaker 2: You're the better team. Just go out there and just
- 57:06Speaker 2: blow this team out of the stadium, because they can
- 57:08Speaker 2: do it. And I think the short week, you know,
- 57:14Speaker 2: the obviously been miserable after losing to Denver in the game,
- 57:17Speaker 2: and they know they should have won. You know, I'm
- 57:20Speaker 2: looking at this as a get right kind of game
- 57:22Speaker 2: for them. They need one, and I think they got
- 57:24Speaker 2: the right opponent.
- 57:25Speaker 1: All right, my friend, the moment, the truth. What are
- 57:28Speaker 1: you predicting score wise?
- 57:32Speaker 2: I'm I'm gonna go I'm gonna say they're gonna blow
- 57:36Speaker 2: them out. I'm gonna say Eagles thirty one to thirteen.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Oh okay, wow.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Well, I don't disagree with you, but because of what
- 57:49Speaker 1: we've watched over the first five games, I can't pick
- 57:53Speaker 1: the Eagles to blow out anybody until I see them
- 57:54Speaker 1: blow it out anybody. I picked the Eagles to be
- 57:57Speaker 1: Denver twenty four to fourteen. Well, we saw how that
- 58:00Speaker 1: turned out, didn't we. So I think because it's the
- 58:03Speaker 1: divisional game, the Giants team to play a little bit
- 58:06Speaker 1: better at home. I think it's gonna be one of
- 58:09Speaker 1: those backyard divisional brawls. Obviously, the Eagles have much better
- 58:13Speaker 1: talent than the Giants do. The Giants are putting a
- 58:17Speaker 1: rookie quarterback under center against Vic Vangiel's defense. I don't
- 58:21Speaker 1: think the Giants will score more than fourteen points, and
- 58:24Speaker 1: I do believe one of their testdowns will come up
- 58:26Speaker 1: coming slock time at the end of a game. But
- 58:29Speaker 1: I don't know if the Eagles can score more than
- 58:31Speaker 1: twenty one, twenty two points against this Giants team on
- 58:35Speaker 1: the road. I'm gonna take the Eagles twenty to fourteen.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Twenty to fourteen. I'm gonna stick with that.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Okay, I think I think a little bit more on
- 58:42Speaker 2: the side of that. I think they'll get some takeaways,
- 58:44Speaker 2: and you know, I think the defense will give them
- 58:46Speaker 2: some short fields and some opportunity points. I'm looking for
- 58:50Speaker 2: it to be a pretty easy kind of win if
- 58:54Speaker 2: you listen to the personnel matchups. It should be. But
- 58:57Speaker 2: this has been a strange season. I will agree with
- 58:59Speaker 2: you there, but I'm gonna thirty one thirteen.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Man, you have more faith than eagles right now than
- 59:03Speaker 1: I do. I'll give you that, all right. That's gonna
- 59:05Speaker 1: wrap up this preview edition of Birds Weekly, presented by
- 59:09Speaker 1: the Inside the Birds Network, until next time for the
- 59:12Speaker 1: Hall of Famer Raid Dinger. I'm Derek Gunn. So long, everybody,
