- 0:00So, I say this like basically every
- 0:02week. Um, but if you're new with us or
- 0:06don't listen when I talk, uh, Ava and I,
- 0:10my wife, uh, not Ava Puit, but Ava call,
- 0:13uh, recently moved to Georgia from
- 0:15California, right? Uh, and so one of the
- 0:18things that you do when you move into a
- 0:20new house or a new apartment, uh, is or
- 0:24when you move into your dorm room if
- 0:25you're going to college anytime soon, is
- 0:28that you have to furnish it. Right? Like
- 0:30you got to buy stuff for your apartment.
- 0:33Are we good?
- 0:34>> Seems like we're a little finicky.
- 0:38>> Um, so you got to buy stuff for your
- 0:40apartment, right? And if you want to get
- 0:41stuff for cheap because y'all, furniture
- 0:43is like ridiculously expensive. Ava and
- 0:46I, we went to a furniture store that one
- 0:48of her work colleagues was like, "Go to
- 0:49this furniture store. They're great."
- 0:51And then we were like, "Dude, you're
- 0:52rich. Like this place is insane. It's
- 0:54like thousands of dollars for like a
- 0:56chair, right?" It was crazy. But so if
- 0:59you want to get stuff for your
- 1:00apartment, your dorm room, your house,
- 1:02whatever, and you don't have rich people
- 1:04money, uh you go to one a one-stop shop,
- 1:07right? You go to IKEA. Okay,
- 1:10>> you guys know IKEA, right? Has anybody
- 1:12never been to IKEA?
- 1:14>> You said never.
- 1:14>> Really, Tony? You've never been to IKEA?
- 1:17>> That's crazy. All right, so if you've
- 1:19never been to IKEA or you blocked it out
- 1:21because it was a traumatic memory, I get
- 1:23it. IKEA is a store that sells basically
- 1:26everything you could ever need to
- 1:27furnish your house, right? It sells
- 1:29appliances. It sells furniture, decor,
- 1:32dishes, pots and pans, ceiling fans,
- 1:35fake plants, like the whole stuff,
- 1:38right? You you name it, IKEA sells it,
- 1:40right? And because IKEA is a Swedish
- 1:43company, all the items in the store
- 1:45don't have like normal names, right?
- 1:47Like they have this like these like
- 1:48weird Swedish names and and the
- 1:51instructions have no words in them. And
- 1:53so you just have like these pictures of
- 1:55this like really weird stick figure dude
- 1:57who's got this like big dumb smile on
- 1:59his face and he's just super excited to
- 2:01be putting together this couch and
- 2:03nobody has ever smiled like that when
- 2:05you're putting together IKEA furniture.
- 2:06Like I will promise you that it's not
- 2:09fun.
- 2:10>> Correct.
- 2:10>> So um when A and I moved to Georgia, we
- 2:14went to IKEA to buy a bunch of furniture
- 2:16and stuff for our apartment. Right. And
- 2:17the hard thing about IKEA is that they
- 2:20arrange the store not like Target or
- 2:23Walmart, right? They arrange the store
- 2:25like a maze, okay? So, you don't really
- 2:28know where you are and there's no way to
- 2:30get out of the store except to go all
- 2:32the way through the entire store. And
- 2:34so, you'll be in like the kitchen
- 2:36section and then you're like, "Hey,
- 2:37there's an exit." And then you walk
- 2:38through and it's like, "Now you're in
- 2:40the bathroom section." And then you walk
- 2:41through another exit and it's like, "Now
- 2:43you're in bedrooms or potted plants or
- 2:45something." It's it's crazy. And the
- 2:46only way to get through is that they
- 2:48have these painted lines on the ground,
- 2:50like arrows on the ground that will
- 2:52point you through all of the displays
- 2:55until you find your way out of the
- 2:57store. And it will take you like 2 hours
- 2:58for real. So like if you go to IKEA and
- 3:01you're like, "All I want is one measly
- 3:03potted plant." Well, you're going to
- 3:05have to walk through the entire store to
- 3:07get to your potted plant. And and what's
- 3:09what's crazy about it is if you have to
- 3:10go to the bathroom while you're at IKEA,
- 3:14they have on all of the like display ba
- 3:16display toilets, they'll have like paper
- 3:18over it that says like please don't pee
- 3:21in this display toilet because like you
- 3:24just know somebody did it and so now
- 3:26they have to have signs that are like
- 3:28please don't use the toilets in the IKEA
- 3:29display. That has nothing to do with
- 3:31anything but just like you know little
- 3:32fun fact for you. But so the good thing
- 3:35about IKEA is that you can't really get
- 3:37lost there, right? Because of these
- 3:39painted lines on the ground because
- 3:40everything kind of leads into the next
- 3:41thing. You can't really get lost. So if
- 3:43you ever don't know where you are or how
- 3:45you got there or why you're in the like
- 3:48man cave bathroom section, right? You
- 3:50can always follow the painted arrows on
- 3:52the ground and they will tell you which
- 3:55way to go. And that that image, the the
- 3:58painted lines or the painted arrows that
- 4:00tell us which way to go, that's
- 4:01important for tonight's message. That's
- 4:03why I just spent like 5 minutes yapping
- 4:05about IKEA, right? It's it's important
- 4:06for tonight's I am statement about
- 4:09Jesus. And if you haven't been with us
- 4:11recently or you've been kind of in and
- 4:13out for the last few weeks, we've been
- 4:14spending quite a bit of time over the
- 4:16last few weeks talking about the seven I
- 4:19am statements that Jesus makes in the
- 4:22Gospel of John. We've been calling this
- 4:24series I am who I am. And these are
- 4:26seven metaphors that Jesus gives us to
- 4:29help us better understand who he is and
- 4:32what he came to earth to do. Right? He
- 4:33it's it's all about his mission and his
- 4:36identity. So in the first week, we
- 4:38talked about how that phrase I am
- 4:42connects the identity of Jesus to the
- 4:44identity of God. And then for the last
- 4:46few weeks, we've been going through each
- 4:47one of these statements, kind of
- 4:49unpacking them as we go, right? And so
- 4:51every week I've been asking you to
- 4:53rattle off the names of these I am
- 4:55statements. Who can tell me the the
- 4:56first statement that we did?
- 4:58>> I am the bread of life.
- 4:59>> I am the bread of life. Harper, you got
- 5:01a hand raised. Who can you tell me the
- 5:02next one or another one?
- 5:06>> No, maybe not. Can you guys give me the
- 5:07second one?
- 5:08>> I am the light of the world.
- 5:08>> I'm the light of the world. Very nice.
- 5:10The third one.
- 5:12>> I am the gate for the sheep. I heard the
- 5:14fourth one there. What's the fourth one?
- 5:16>> I'm the good shepherd for sure. And then
- 5:18the one we did last week.
- 5:21>> I'm the resurrection and the life. I
- 5:22heard an adult sponsor saying that. So,
- 5:24I don't know if I should count that.
- 5:26Well, I'll tell you guys what. I have
- 5:28been challenging you throughout this
- 5:29series to be memorizing all of these I
- 5:32am statements. That's like not that
- 5:33hard. That's like less than probably
- 5:35three Bible verses. You could do it. So,
- 5:37I I will make you guys a deal because we
- 5:39have two more weeks between now and the
- 5:41next time that we meet for Switch
- 5:42Sundays. If you come in having all seven
- 5:45of these I am statements locked in and
- 5:47memorized. I'll bring like ice cream and
- 5:49cookies and stuff. And if you can like
- 5:52recite them to me, you get ice cream and
- 5:54cookies and stuff. And this isn't like
- 5:56classic youth group thing where if you
- 5:58don't get them, I'll still give you
- 6:00cookies and ice cream. Like genuinely,
- 6:01that will be for people who have them
- 6:03memorized for sure. So I will give you
- 6:06tonight's IM statement and I'll give you
- 6:07next week's just so that you can like
- 6:09start two weeks from now so you can
- 6:10start working on it. So here's
- 6:12tonight's. Tonight's is I am the way,
- 6:15the truth, and the life. I am the way,
- 6:19the truth, and the life. The next one
- 6:21for next week is I am the true vine. So,
- 6:23if you want to start working on that,
- 6:24that's that's two weeks from now. Uh I
- 6:27am the way, the truth, and the life. So,
- 6:30to to set us up here, and we'll get back
- 6:32to that that I am statement in just a
- 6:33sec, but for this whole series leading
- 6:35up to this point, we've been walking
- 6:38through with Jesus throughout his
- 6:40three-year ministry. And all throughout
- 6:42this ministry, we've been seeing seeing
- 6:44him do mainly three kinds of things,
- 6:46right? He does teaching, he does
- 6:49healings, and he does casting out demons
- 6:51for the most part. And he goes
- 6:53throughout the region called Judea doing
- 6:55all these things. And we see people
- 6:56responding to him in two different ways.
- 7:00Either they recognize that this this man
- 7:03who is teaching, who is casting out
- 7:05demons, who's healing people, they
- 7:06either they recognize that he is the son
- 7:08of God who has come to bring eternal
- 7:11life to the people of God, or they
- 7:14reject him as a liar, as a false
- 7:17teacher, as a blasphemer who wants to
- 7:19lead people away from God. And over and
- 7:22over again throughout John's gospel, we
- 7:25see that pattern repeated as the
- 7:27ministry of Jesus just builds and builds
- 7:29and builds. And if you weren't here last
- 7:31week, last week we talked about how at
- 7:34the climax of Jesus's ministry, at like
- 7:36the high point of Jesus's ministry up
- 7:38till now is in chapter 11 when Jesus
- 7:41raises Lazarus from the dead. And when
- 7:44he does that, Jesus says, "I am the
- 7:47resurrection and the life." He's
- 7:49describing himself as the the
- 7:51resurrection at the end of history that
- 7:53that's tied into his identity. And then
- 7:56he proves it by doing this thing that
- 7:58only God can do, right? He raises a dude
- 8:00from the dead. And so as soon as Lazarus
- 8:03walks out of that tomb, this the the
- 8:04scene in John's gospel, it cuts away
- 8:07from what's going on with Lazarus and
- 8:09Jesus in that area, right? So it it cuts
- 8:12away to the religious leaders. And the
- 8:14religious leaders who we know have been
- 8:15Jesus's ops throughout this entire his
- 8:18entire ministry so far. The religious
- 8:20leaders who say, "We got to do something
- 8:22about this Jesus guy because if he keeps
- 8:25performing miracles, the whole nation is
- 8:28going to turn after him. They're going
- 8:29to go after him." So the the religious
- 8:31leaders, they hatch a plan to kill
- 8:34Jesus. And and just for good measure,
- 8:36they also hatch a plan to like rekill
- 8:38Lazarus, just like to be extra sure,
- 8:40he's double dead. And in chapter 12, we
- 8:44fast forward from there to the last week
- 8:46of Jesus's life. And Jesus begins to
- 8:49speak more openly about the fact that he
- 8:53is going to be killed, that he is going
- 8:54to go to the cross. But the followers of
- 8:56Jesus, they don't really understand what
- 8:58he's saying. They really don't get what
- 8:59he means. And so, they don't believe
- 9:01him. And they think that Jesus is just
- 9:03like getting ready to establish his
- 9:05kingdom on the earth. Chapter 13, we
- 9:08fast forward again and now we're on the
- 9:10last night of Jesus's life, the night
- 9:12that Jesus will be betrayed and
- 9:15arrested. And it's the last meal that
- 9:17Jesus shares with his disciples before
- 9:19the cross. And in Christianity, we we
- 9:21tend to call that meal the last supper.
- 9:24And at the last supper, Jesus predicts
- 9:26again that one of his disciples, Judas,
- 9:29is going to betray him. But his
- 9:31disciples like still don't get it,
- 9:33right? They still don't believe. And at
- 9:36the end of chapter 13, Jesus warns them.
- 9:38He tells them that he's going to be
- 9:40going away. And one of his disciples,
- 9:43Peter, tells them like, "No way, Jesus.
- 9:45I'm coming with you. Like, even if
- 9:47everybody else turns their back on you,
- 9:48like I I will never betray you, Jesus."
- 9:51And then Jesus is like, "Peter, you're
- 9:53going to deny me three times before this
- 9:56night is out. You're going to deny that
- 9:58you even know me." So, that's the setup,
- 10:00right? None of that is the resurrection,
- 10:02and the life, but or the the way, the
- 10:03truth, and the life, but that's the
- 10:04setup. Okay, the they've sat down for
- 10:06dinner. Jesus has been talking about how
- 10:08one of the disciples is going to betray
- 10:10him. Jesus tells Peter that he's going
- 10:12to deny even knowing him. Probably this
- 10:15is like a really awkward meal, right?
- 10:17Like probably the vibe is kind of tense,
- 10:19right? And then we get this next
- 10:21conversation. It starts in John chapter
- 10:2314. If you need one of the Bibles that
- 10:25we got in the back there, we're going to
- 10:26be in John chapter 14 going through um
- 10:28verse like six or seven. So Jesus says,
- 10:32"Don't let your hearts be troubled."
- 10:36Now, why would his disciples hearts be
- 10:38troubled? Because Jesus has just their
- 10:41their messiah, their king, their friend,
- 10:43the guy who's been leading them. He's
- 10:44like, "Hey, I'm going to be leaving and
- 10:46you can't come where I'm going." Right?
- 10:47So he says, "Don't let your hearts be
- 10:49troubled." He says, "Trust in God and
- 10:52trust also in me. There is more than
- 10:55enough room in my father's house. If
- 10:58this were not so, would I have told you
- 11:00that I am going to prepare a place for
- 11:03you? When everything is ready, I will
- 11:05come and get you so that you will always
- 11:07be with me and you know the way to where
- 11:10I'm going. No, we don't. Lord, Thomas
- 11:14said, we have no idea where you're
- 11:16going. So, how can we know the way?
- 11:18Jesus told him, I am the way, the truth,
- 11:22and the life. No one can come to the
- 11:24Father except through me. If you had
- 11:28really known me, you would know who my
- 11:30father is. From now on, you do know him
- 11:34and have seen him. Let me pray for us.
- 11:36Dear Lord, we thank you for your word.
- 11:38We thank you, God, that we have this
- 11:40chance to come together and and open the
- 11:43scriptures, Lord, that we have access to
- 11:45the scriptures in a way that that people
- 11:47throughout history have not. We pray,
- 11:50Holy Spirit, that you would illuminate
- 11:52this text to us tonight. Amen.
- 11:56So, so Jesus has just told his disciples
- 11:58that he's going to be leaving them,
- 11:59right? The atmosphere in the room has
- 12:01got to be kind of tense. It's kind of
- 12:02awkward. It's kind of sad. Right?
- 12:04Remember, Jesus is this promised savior
- 12:07of Israel. His disciples have been
- 12:08following him for three years going,
- 12:10"Man, this is the guy who's going to
- 12:12overthrow the Roman government, who's
- 12:14going to establish the permanent rule of
- 12:16Israel on the earth." Right? They're
- 12:18they're hyped about it. Jesus is the one
- 12:20who has been preaching this message that
- 12:22the kingdom of God is breaking into the
- 12:25kingdom of darkness. If you were here
- 12:26this morning, that's what we talked
- 12:27about this morning. And right when it
- 12:29seems like their mission is picking up
- 12:32steam when Jesus has been welcomed into
- 12:34the city as their promised king, he's
- 12:37just going to leave.
- 12:40And so to reassure them, Jesus tells his
- 12:42disciples, "Hey, don't be sad. Don't be
- 12:44troubled." He says, "Trust in God and
- 12:48trust in me." That's a big claim, right?
- 12:52That's that's a God claim right there.
- 12:53Jesus tells his disciples to trust in
- 12:56him the way they trust in God.
- 12:59He tells them, "I am going to prepare a
- 13:01place for you in my father's home." When
- 13:05Ava and I were looking at apartments
- 13:07before we moved to Georgia, we like flew
- 13:09out a couple weeks before we moved. And
- 13:12one of the things that we were looking
- 13:13at in these different apartments that we
- 13:15were we were looking at is that we
- 13:16wanted to find an apartment that had a
- 13:17guest room because we wanted to be able
- 13:20to host our friends and our family who
- 13:22came from California to visit. Right?
- 13:24So, we've had a couple of chances to
- 13:25host people and every time they come
- 13:27out, right, we we pull out our guest bed
- 13:30and Ava puts like a comforter on and
- 13:32she's got like 87 pillows that she'll
- 13:34like lay out over the bed like the whole
- 13:36thing. It makes it look very like cute
- 13:38and aesthetic, right? We prepare a place
- 13:42for our guests who come to stay with us.
- 13:45And what Jesus is saying is that he
- 13:47says, "I'm leaving, but I am leaving to
- 13:49go and prepare a place for you and for
- 13:53me."
- 13:54Only when Jesus comes to take us back
- 13:57into his father's home, it's not just
- 13:59going to be for like a long weekend that
- 14:01Ava's sister comes and visits. It's not
- 14:03going to be just my parents coming for
- 14:05like a few days or something, right?
- 14:07Jesus is saying that the place that he
- 14:09is preparing to take us is where we will
- 14:12stay with him forever.
- 14:15But between this point where we are now
- 14:18and that one right Jesus is going to go
- 14:20to the cross. The cross is going to be
- 14:23the way that Jesus pays the penalty for
- 14:26your sin and for my sin. The cross is
- 14:29going to be the moment when Jesus
- 14:31satisfies our debt before God. The cross
- 14:34and the resurrection are going to be the
- 14:36way for you and me to be welcomed into
- 14:40the home of God. Not just as a temporary
- 14:43guest who's there for a long weekend,
- 14:45but as a son, as a daughter.
- 14:49Jesus tells them, "You know the way to
- 14:52where I'm going." And his disciple
- 14:54Thomas, who like last week we talked
- 14:56about Thomas. I love Thomas. And Thomas
- 14:57is like, "No, we don't. No idea what
- 15:00you're talking about, Lord. Don't even
- 15:01know where you're going. I don't know
- 15:03how I'm supposed to like Google Maps my
- 15:05way there. And what I think is awesome
- 15:07about this passage is that Jesus kind of
- 15:09like swerves Thomas's first question.
- 15:12Like he doesn't actually tell them where
- 15:13he's going. He doesn't say, "That's
- 15:15easy, Thomas. I'm going to heaven. You
- 15:17just have to like follow me till you die
- 15:18and then you'll be good." Instead, he
- 15:20focuses on the second part of Thomas's
- 15:23question. Thomas says, "We don't know
- 15:24the way there." And Jesus says, "You
- 15:26don't know the way there? I'll tell you
- 15:28I am the way."
- 15:30Remember, these are big important God
- 15:33connection words that we've been talking
- 15:36throughout this whole series. Jesus
- 15:37says, "You want to know the way to my
- 15:39father's house? You want to know the way
- 15:40to get to heaven? I will tell you, I am
- 15:43the way and the truth and the life." In
- 15:47the next line, he doubles down on that.
- 15:49He says, "No one can come to the father
- 15:52except through me."
- 15:55So, with just the last couple of minutes
- 15:57that we have here before we break into
- 15:58small groups, I I want to take a minute
- 16:00to camp out on each of those ideas that
- 16:03Jesus is the way, that he's the truth,
- 16:06and that he's the life. So, first off,
- 16:09Jesus is the way, right? Remember that
- 16:11that where where Jesus has just told
- 16:13them where he's going, right? He's going
- 16:14to heaven, right? He's going back to his
- 16:16father's house. Now, if if heaven is our
- 16:19destination, what's our way of getting
- 16:21there?
- 16:23>> Subway. not subway. Thank you. Jesus is
- 16:25our way of getting there. And remember,
- 16:27Jesus is speaking to this group of
- 16:29Jewish people, right? They they have
- 16:31been brought up thinking that they can
- 16:34get to heaven on their own if they
- 16:36follow the Jewish laws, if they offer
- 16:38the right sacrifices, if they pray
- 16:40enough and work hard enough, right? And
- 16:43and that may have all been true, but the
- 16:46problem is that they can't follow the
- 16:49Jewish laws perfectly. They can't pray
- 16:51hard enough or work hard enough to
- 16:53overcome the debt for their sin. But
- 16:56Jesus does. Like we talked about this
- 16:59morning, Jesus is the only person in
- 17:02history who lived his entire life in
- 17:04perfect obedience to God the Father. The
- 17:07only person in history who perfectly
- 17:10followed all of those Jewish laws. And
- 17:12Jesus is the one who offers the right
- 17:15sacrifice, the sacrifice of his own body
- 17:18in order to bring you and me into the
- 17:22house of the father. And just in case
- 17:25that didn't sound like controversial
- 17:27enough, when Jesus is saying it to his
- 17:29disciples, he says in his next line, he
- 17:31says, "No one can come to the father
- 17:34except through me."
- 17:37Now, we we might hear that and think
- 17:40that sounds kind of harsh. Like, Lord,
- 17:42what about my my friend at school who's
- 17:44agnostic? What about my friend who's
- 17:46like a nice, hardworking, kind Muslim or
- 17:49Hindu, right? What about my friend who's
- 17:51like a super moral atheist? Or or maybe
- 17:53my friend who just kind of sits on the
- 17:55fence their whole life that they're
- 17:56like, "Yeah, maybe Jesus is the son of
- 17:57God, but like maybe not. I don't know."
- 17:59Like, would God really send someone like
- 18:01that to hell? Well, here here's a
- 18:03question for you guys, like an actual
- 18:04question. You can respond yes or no. Do
- 18:07Christians deserve to go to heaven
- 18:09because we're better more moral people
- 18:11than non-Christians.
- 18:12>> No.
- 18:12>> No. Yes or no? Could there be a Muslim
- 18:15or a Hindu or an agnostic who is a
- 18:17better moral moral person than like a
- 18:20particular Christian?
- 18:22>> Yes. Absolutely. And and that's my
- 18:24point. Listen, heaven is not for people
- 18:27who are good enough or moral enough or
- 18:30did enough good deeds to make it into
- 18:32heaven.
- 18:34The message of the Bible is that all of
- 18:36us are fundamentally broken. All of us
- 18:39deserve to be condemned. And that apart
- 18:42from Jesus, all of us will be spend
- 18:46eternity separated from God unless we
- 18:48throw ourselves on Jesus as the only one
- 18:52who can satisfy God's perfect moral
- 18:54standard as the only one who can bring
- 18:57us into the presence of the father. So
- 18:59like yes the the claim that Jesus is
- 19:02making to salvation is is exclusive. He
- 19:05says that the only way that we can be
- 19:07taken into the presence of the father is
- 19:09through Christ. But there is also
- 19:12something that is inclusive about what
- 19:14Jesus is saying. Right? Jesus's offer of
- 19:17salvation isn't limited to Jewish
- 19:20people. Right? That's what a lot of the
- 19:21Jewish people who Jesus was speaking to
- 19:23would have thought that God has come to
- 19:26save the Jews and the Jews only.
- 19:29But Jesus's promise of salvation is not
- 19:31something that is limited to one ethnic
- 19:33group, to one gender, to one
- 19:36nationality, to a certain economic
- 19:38level, a certain education level. None
- 19:40of those things. The the offer of
- 19:42salvation is extended to the whole
- 19:45world, to anyone who will put their
- 19:48trust in Jesus. He is the way. In Acts
- 19:52chapter 4, it says, "There is salvation
- 19:55in no one else. God has given no other
- 20:00name under heaven by which we must be
- 20:02saved. Jesus is the way.
- 20:06He also says, "I am the truth." John's
- 20:09gospel tells us over and over again that
- 20:11Jesus is the one who reveals to us the
- 20:14character of the father. Jesus is the
- 20:16one who speaks the words that bring
- 20:19life, that truly bring life. And Jesus
- 20:22is the one who makes these big bold
- 20:25claims about himself. these these God
- 20:27claims about his ability to forgive
- 20:29sins, about him being our one access
- 20:32point to God.
- 20:34Either Jesus is telling the truth here
- 20:36that he is the truth or else he is a
- 20:39liar and he is not a king worth
- 20:42following. Either he is the only way to
- 20:44God or else he is not a way to God at
- 20:47all. He has closed off our ability to
- 20:51sit on the fence, to sit in the middle
- 20:53and say, "Okay, yeah, Jesus is a way to
- 20:55God, but he's not the only way to God."
- 20:58And at the end of the passage that we
- 21:00read that we read today, Jesus says, "If
- 21:02you had really known me, you would know
- 21:05who my father is." In in verse 9 of this
- 21:09chapter, that's after what we read,
- 21:10he'll he'll say something similar. He
- 21:12says, "Anyone who has seen me has seen
- 21:15the father."
- 21:16And the point he's making isn't that
- 21:19Jesus who who is God the Son is like the
- 21:21same as God the Father, right? But what
- 21:23he's saying is if you want to know what
- 21:25God the Father is like, look at God the
- 21:28Son. Look at Jesus.
- 21:31The characteristics that are true of God
- 21:34the Father are true of Jesus, too. So,
- 21:36so when we look at Jesus and we see love
- 21:40and mercy and kindness and gentleness,
- 21:43when we look at Jesus and we see
- 21:45absolute total moral perfection and
- 21:48justice and hatred of oppression and
- 21:51evil, we see the the character of God
- 21:53the Father too.
- 21:56And that means if we reject Jesus, if we
- 21:58reject the son, we reject the father
- 22:01too. That's that's the problem with
- 22:03these other religious worldviews, right?
- 22:05That is the problem with like uh Islam
- 22:07or Hinduism or any of these other faiths
- 22:09is that they look at Jesus and they say
- 22:11I don't believe that Jesus is the son of
- 22:14God. I don't believe that Jesus reflects
- 22:16the character of the father to the
- 22:17world. But if you reject the truth then
- 22:22you cannot know the one true God. You
- 22:25cannot have one without the other. You
- 22:27cannot have the father without the son.
- 22:29Jesus is the truth.
- 22:32And finally, he says,"I am the life."
- 22:36The beginning of John's gospel, if you
- 22:39read John chapter 1, it starts out with
- 22:40this God's eye view of creation story,
- 22:43right? Of the creation story, right? It
- 22:45tells us that everything in creation was
- 22:47made through Jesus. That Jesus gave life
- 22:51to everything that has life. It is like
- 22:53super intense and powerful. And later in
- 22:56John's gospel, the disciples of Jesus
- 22:58say that Jesus has the words of life.
- 23:02that Jesus is teaching is what leads
- 23:04people into eternal life, what leads
- 23:06people into right relationship with God.
- 23:10The message of the Bible is that all
- 23:12people before salvation apart from
- 23:15Jesus, that all people are dead in our
- 23:18sins. And and like we talked about last
- 23:20week, if you you were here for our last
- 23:22message, it's not that we're mostly
- 23:24dead. It's not that we're kind of dead.
- 23:25It's not that we're almost dead. We are
- 23:27all dead.
- 23:29And in the same way that it is
- 23:31impossible for a dead person to get up
- 23:34out of the grave and walk around on
- 23:36their own power, it is impossible for a
- 23:38person who is dead in their sins to
- 23:42experience eternal life, to make
- 23:44themselves right with God.
- 23:47But Jesus is the one who brings us back
- 23:50to life. Jesus is the one who raises us
- 23:53from spiritual death and restores us
- 23:55with to relationship with God. And like
- 23:58we talked about last week, Jesus is the
- 24:01one who has the power over life and
- 24:03death. So that means although we may die
- 24:06on this earth, although we may
- 24:08experience physical death on this earth,
- 24:11death doesn't get the last word.
- 24:14Although we may die on earth, we will
- 24:16experience eternal life. And that's not
- 24:19like spirit life where you're up on a
- 24:23cloud like strumming a harp forever,
- 24:25right? That is physical life in flesh
- 24:27and blood bodies living on a recreated
- 24:30heaven and earth in perfect relationship
- 24:32with God and one another. That's the
- 24:34promise of eternal life with with
- 24:36Christ. That is the promise of the Bible
- 24:40for every single person who knows Jesus
- 24:43as savior, who knows that Jesus is the
- 24:46only way, the only truth, and the only
- 24:49life. Though we may die, yet we will
- 24:54live.
- 24:55And it isn't because you're you're good
- 24:57enough or you're mortal enough or you're
- 24:59holy enough or any of those things. You
- 25:02are not. I am not. Your sponsors are
- 25:04not. And on this side of heaven, none of
- 25:07us will be. It is because Jesus is good
- 25:10enough. Jesus is moral enough. Jesus is
- 25:14powerful enough to overcome sin and
- 25:17death and hell, all of it. Jesus is our
- 25:20way, our access to God the Father, but
- 25:24his arms are wide open for anyone and
- 25:28everyone who would call upon him. So
- 25:32that's my encouragement to you is that
- 25:34you have an opportunity in your friend
- 25:36groups, on your sports teams, in your
- 25:39jobs, in your future careers, in
- 25:41college. you have an opportunity to
- 25:43point people back to the one way, the
- 25:46one truth, the one life, so that God
- 25:49would transform lives and raise people
- 25:51up to eternal life. So, let's pray and
- 25:55then we'll have the worship team come
- 25:56up.
