- 0:06Speaker 1: I'm Brian Medore. A 19-year-old has been arrested and charged
- 0:10Speaker 1: after a reported altercation in Happy Valley Goose Bay. RCMP
- 0:14Speaker 1: on patrol were approached by someone early Thursday morning who
- 0:18Speaker 1: claimed that they'd been assaulted and threatened with a knife.
- 0:21Speaker 1: The victim suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Police got a name and description of the suspect and
- 0:29Speaker 1: the accused was found on a nearby trail. Kobe Rich
- 0:32Speaker 1: has been charged with assault with a weapon and uttering
- 0:35Speaker 1: threats and was held to appear in court. He has
- 0:38Speaker 1: since been released on court-imposed conditions and is scheduled to
- 0:42Speaker 1: return in November. A groundbreaking ceremony took place at Five
- 0:47Speaker 1: Wing Goose Bay today to mark the beginning of construction
- 0:49Speaker 1: of a new central heating plant at the base. The
- 0:52Speaker 1: federal government calls the new plant a cornerstone of a
- 0:56Speaker 1: $ 187 million energy performance contract awarded last year and will
- 1:01Speaker 1: move the base off diesel heat and onto the Labrador
- 1:05Speaker 1: electrical grid. The Department of National Defense has secured an
- 1:09Speaker 1: additional 20 megawatts of capacity from Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
- 1:14Speaker 1: The project is expected to reduce the base's energy costs
- 1:17Speaker 1: by 77 percent. Construction is expected to be completed by
- 1:22Speaker 1: the end of 2030. G7 nations, including Canada, have agreed
- 1:28Speaker 1: to release 100 million barrels of diesel reserves as the
- 1:31Speaker 1: staple fuel continues to soar in price. Member countries held
- 1:36Speaker 1: an urgent meeting today agreeing to make production more flexible
- 1:40Speaker 1: and release some 100 million barrels of reserve over the
- 1:44Speaker 1: next four months. The meeting followed a call from US
- 1:47Speaker 1: President Trump to have European countries release diesel and threats
- 1:52Speaker 1: to ban the export of American diesel. A former fisheries
- 1:56Speaker 1: minister believes France has a much broader purpose in mind
- 1:59Speaker 1: than just harvesting some crab off Newfoundland. The French government
- 2:04Speaker 1: is unilaterally proposing to launch an exploratory snow crab fishery
- 2:08Speaker 1: on the continental shelf beyond Canada's 200-mile limit. It's not
- 2:13Speaker 1: the first time that Canada and France, including St. Pierre
- 2:17Speaker 1: and Miquelon off the south coast, have disputed jurisdiction. Jerry Byrne,
- 2:21Speaker 1: who did not run in the last election, says Canada
- 2:25Speaker 1: has to do a lot more to protest the actions
- 2:27Speaker 1: of France, who he calls the largest player in the
- 2:30Speaker 1: European Union. In 1987, when the French granted exploratory permits
- 2:35Speaker 1: off Newfoundland, the federal government formally protested within days.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It was a formal process, not an informal process. So
- 2:44Speaker 2: our objection to the France crab proposal has to be
- 2:48Speaker 2: turned into a formal objection. That's not done by the DFO.
- 2:53Speaker 2: That's done by the government of Canada through our Foreign
- 2:57Speaker 2: Affairs Department and through the United Nations and other forums.
- 3:01Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Brian Medour.
