- 0:32Speaker 4: Charles Mountain and Will Poulter and should we get the
- 0:35Speaker 4: intro downe and then we can talk about a movie
- 0:37Speaker 4: that's not Carls.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that because kick it off with that.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Well, no, I was just sitting the scene, you know
- 0:45Speaker 2: what I mean, I was going to put you up
- 0:47Speaker 2: on another airy.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I got to start again. You're welcome back. I thought
- 0:53Speaker 3: we were just doing the doing the podcast.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, kid a Fellows.
- 0:58Speaker 3: He's a good special treat.
- 1:01Speaker 2: We've got an absolute superstar on this podcast, a very
- 1:05Speaker 2: special treat, a sort of New Zealand icon and legend. Really,
- 1:09Speaker 2: I think I can say that, Fellas, and I'm talking
- 1:12Speaker 2: of the great Carl Urban joining us in the studio.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Good day, your mad bastard, Holl's.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Life, Good fellas, how are you? It's so good to
- 1:19Speaker 3: be here. I'm pretty grouse, mate. Yeah, have you guys?
- 1:21Speaker 4: I was wondering actually on the on my high speed
- 1:24Speaker 4: drive in here because I was running late, whether you
- 1:27Speaker 4: and Jason ever worked together.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I think we have, Carl, But I'll be bugging if
- 1:32Speaker 2: I can remember what it was. It was many obviously,
- 1:35Speaker 2: many many years ago. It was on something, But I
- 1:37Speaker 2: do remember working with you.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I can tell Carl's got no recollect Probably it was
- 1:42Speaker 3: probably some half assed yeah, many moons ago, that's for sure. Yeah. Well, yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 3: you're different stratospheres now.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but I knew even then that you know, you
- 1:51Speaker 2: were destined for starting man, because you just had this,
- 1:54Speaker 2: you just had this vibe about you, you.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Know what I mean? Have you ever done broken wood? Carl?
- 2:00Speaker 5: No, And I need to do that. That that is
- 2:02Speaker 5: something that is uh, you know, I haven't ticked off yet.
- 2:05Speaker 5: It's on the list. I'm trying to get to it. Hey,
- 2:08Speaker 5: but listen, fellas, before we get too deep, yeah, before
- 2:12Speaker 5: we get too balls deep.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I should say I've got a bone to pick with you.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Oh god, I got a bowl of it, so listen.
- 2:24Speaker 5: I'm not one to hold a grudge or anything, but
- 2:26Speaker 5: I was listening to The Big Show August the twenty
- 2:29Speaker 5: seventh last year, five thirteen pm, and you guys did
- 2:32Speaker 5: the segment right on who are.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Your A list international celebrities? Remember? And you said no.
- 2:40Speaker 3: You said, you know, like you know, like your Tiger
- 2:42Speaker 3: Way titis.
- 2:43Speaker 5: And to a lesser extent, I thought, but no, no,
- 2:48Speaker 5: But I thought, no, not fair enough. Okay, you know
- 2:50Speaker 5: I don't put myself out there as much like like
- 2:53Speaker 5: Tiger did.
- 2:54Speaker 3: And I'm not married a pop star.
- 2:55Speaker 5: You know, I don't have that sexually transmitted fame, which
- 2:58Speaker 5: is bloody had to get rid of once you.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Catch totally mate, you know, totally.
- 3:03Speaker 5: But anyway, then you all went on to compile your
- 3:06Speaker 5: lists and completely left me off the list.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to listen to the audio because I
- 3:13Speaker 2: don't believe that. I'm pretty certain that you were like
- 3:17Speaker 2: second on my list there was. But can I ask
- 3:21Speaker 2: you man, in all seriousness, as an actor in this country,
- 3:25Speaker 2: was it always your ambition to think overseas? You know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: because I think as a New Zealand actors back then,
- 3:31Speaker 2: when I like, when I was acting, it was you know,
- 3:34Speaker 2: we did our Hercules and Zena and all that sort
- 3:36Speaker 2: of stuff.
- 3:37Speaker 3: But for me, I never thought about overseas.
- 3:39Speaker 2: But was that always part of the picture for you
- 3:41Speaker 2: that you wanted to expand out?
- 3:43Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I mean listen, I was looking at
- 3:44Speaker 5: actors like Sam Neil and Lawrence and you know, it
- 3:50Speaker 5: was pretty clear to me that the New Zealand industry,
- 3:52Speaker 5: as amazing as it is and as awesomeate is it
- 3:55Speaker 5: telling our stories, if you want a career of some
- 3:58Speaker 5: serious longevity.
- 3:59Speaker 3: You have to look overseas. And I always just wanted.
- 4:02Speaker 5: To work with the best in the business globally, and
- 4:05Speaker 5: so from a very early point I was had my
- 4:08Speaker 5: my my target set over there.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Because are you from Wellington? Wellington? Originally? Yeah, what part
- 4:13Speaker 3: of Welly, well all over?
- 4:14Speaker 5: Actually we moved around Mount Vick, Oriental Bay, Brooklyn. Yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 5: I moved around a ton Candala.
- 4:21Speaker 4: And then you ended up acting. But briefly, if I remember,
- 4:26Speaker 4: it was like there was something that you did and
- 4:27Speaker 4: then you went and went to UNI. Yeah, and then
- 4:29Speaker 4: I dropped out of UNI, and I remember there had
- 4:32Speaker 4: been Shark Park.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Shark Park Jays. Maybe, actually, maybe that's what we worked on.
- 4:39Speaker 3: What shark Pak was an old sort of It was
- 4:42Speaker 3: a police drama, wasn't it. Yeah, that's right. They probably
- 4:45Speaker 3: recycled the uniforms for your show.
- 4:49Speaker 4: They would have done, yeah, although you would have been
- 4:51Speaker 4: taking a lot more seriously than I was in my role.
- 4:54Speaker 4: So there was all that sort of stuff that you
- 4:55Speaker 4: clocked through. But back then, it feels like we used
- 4:57Speaker 4: to have a hell of a lot more drama being
- 5:00Speaker 4: made at TV shows and all that sort of stuff.
- 5:03Speaker 4: So even back then, back then it feels like you
- 5:06Speaker 4: could have been a bit more of a careerist, even
- 5:08Speaker 4: in New Zealand. But now you like, you can have.
- 5:10Speaker 3: A good run. I think you can have a good run. Yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 3: But in New Zealand you can have a run.
- 5:14Speaker 4: I reckon for about ten years, yeah, and then somebody goes,
- 5:17Speaker 4: you know what this bastard's.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Been and everything fun?
- 5:20Speaker 4: Yeah yah, totally yeah, And it's and you're sort of
- 5:22Speaker 4: your your fatealising somebody else's hands. So when you hear
- 5:26Speaker 4: something like and it must have been rings that came
- 5:28Speaker 4: along something like that pops up, you just got to go, fuck,
- 5:31Speaker 4: I've got to make the most of this.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Yeah, no, totally.
- 5:33Speaker 5: You know what, I think it's actually a strength of
- 5:36Speaker 5: actors in this country because the industry is small and
- 5:39Speaker 5: it forces you to do everything from from.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Theater to to radio to TV.
- 5:45Speaker 5: You know, film, if you can comedy, comedy or everything,
- 5:48Speaker 5: you know, And I think that makes us stronger as performers.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Whereas you look at overseas, like actors in the States,
- 5:54Speaker 5: they get top heavy very quickly. They've got stylists and
- 5:57Speaker 5: agents and managers and dietitians and all all the stuff
- 6:01Speaker 5: that's so on the peripheral. So yeah, but it's you know,
- 6:06Speaker 5: you know, if you want a career of longevity, Yeah,
- 6:10Speaker 5: you know that you've got to think internationally, and the
- 6:12Speaker 5: world's gotten to a point now with the zooms and everything,
- 6:15Speaker 5: the meetings you can do that.
- 6:16Speaker 3: You can achieve a lot more by just staying here. Yeah.
- 6:19Speaker 3: And did you have a swing at Ozzie as well?
- 6:21Speaker 5: I did for a brief minute. Actually, it was the
- 6:22Speaker 5: most disparaiting year of my life. It was after Shorty
- 6:27Speaker 5: Street and I went over there and was basically starting
- 6:30Speaker 5: again and I was working at a bottle store in
- 6:31Speaker 5: Double Bay.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and it was tough. It was brutal.
- 6:35Speaker 5: But yeah, I eventually got off at something back here
- 6:37Speaker 5: and came back in the rest of history.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I did three and a half years. There was a
- 6:40Speaker 3: furniture remove list.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Right, that's why it's built Stallion right.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It was funny you should mention Shorten Street because I
- 6:49Speaker 2: was talking to a friend today and I was telling
- 6:51Speaker 2: her that we were interviewing you, and, to her eternal shame,
- 6:55Speaker 2: she wasn't quite sure who I was referring to, and
- 6:57Speaker 2: she said, oh, did you.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Do Shortened Street? See it?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, he did do short and Street. But she
- 7:03Speaker 2: was thinking of Carl Burnett, you know, the one of
- 7:06Speaker 2: the blonde hair. Easy confusion to make now they're kind
- 7:09Speaker 2: of quite so similar.
- 7:14Speaker 6: How long were you on short six months?
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah? Okay, yeah, I did six months now.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And is there you know, overseas and in the States
- 7:22Speaker 2: in particular, is there a sense of community amongst sort
- 7:25Speaker 2: of New Zealand actors? Is there a sort of do
- 7:27Speaker 2: you sort of hang out together? What's the sort of situation?
- 7:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I heard, I've heard that there is. I can't
- 7:33Speaker 3: I'm not part of it. Let me know. I'm I'm
- 7:37Speaker 3: on the wait list.
- 7:38Speaker 5: But no, to be fearful, is I live here, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 5: and you know, I've sort of really taken my inspiration
- 7:45Speaker 5: from the likes of you know, Peter Jackson and Sam
- 7:48Speaker 5: Neil who have international.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Careers but work here. I thought, that's a that's a
- 7:52Speaker 3: pretty good way to do. Do you live in here
- 7:53Speaker 3: the whole time? Yeah?
- 7:55Speaker 5: Wow, never moved Holy And you know, partly is because
- 7:59Speaker 5: you know, when I had kids and I didn't want
- 8:02Speaker 5: to move them away from their grandparents.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great place to live. That's yes, Come on,
- 8:07Speaker 3: it's so good. Yeah, yeah, it certainly is.
- 8:10Speaker 4: And so you've got now about eighteen different projects that
- 8:14Speaker 4: have come out. Yeah, you've got the last season of
- 8:17Speaker 4: the final season of The Boys, which and I just
- 8:21Speaker 4: there's something good coming col just wait.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I hate superhero shit.
- 8:25Speaker 4: And it took me a long time to realize that
- 8:26Speaker 4: I did, because all of these Marvel things would come
- 8:29Speaker 4: out and everyone was raving about them, The Avengers, five Stars,
- 8:32Speaker 4: five Busies, sorry five, and then I go along to
- 8:35Speaker 4: it and it's like it's nine hours long.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I hate it.
- 8:38Speaker 4: And then I realized that it's actually it's just not
- 8:40Speaker 4: for me. There's no point keeping on going. And then
- 8:43Speaker 4: eventually you realize that you're either too old. You know,
- 8:45Speaker 4: it's for the kids, it's passed you by.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Fundamentally, you got to realize that the whole comic book
- 8:49Speaker 5: genre is made was.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Designed for ten year old It's not year old man.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Yes, but The Boys is brilliant because it sort of
- 8:56Speaker 4: tips the whole thing on its head and it's really
- 8:59Speaker 4: mean spirited, which I love about it. And you get
- 9:01Speaker 4: to have a hell of a lot of a hell
- 9:03Speaker 4: of a lot of fun. Yeah, when that came to you,
- 9:06Speaker 4: is that something that got offered to you and you're
- 9:08Speaker 4: straight into what you auditioned for it?
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:10Speaker 5: I was actually I was driving along here in New Zealand. No,
- 9:13Speaker 5: I won't say I was driving. I was at home
- 9:16Speaker 5: and I was checking my phone as you do, and
- 9:20Speaker 5: I saw that my mate and star had been cast
- 9:23Speaker 5: in this thing called The Boys, and I'm like, oh.
- 9:25Speaker 5: I read about the synopsis went the Boys, and read
- 9:28Speaker 5: the synopsis about this satirical look at the superhero genre.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I thought, that's a catchy title, it's a good.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Premise, sounds interesting and just you know, two weeks later,
- 9:38Speaker 5: a week later, I got an offer to be in it.
- 9:42Speaker 5: I read the script was immediately loved the character of
- 9:45Speaker 5: William Butcher, this fun, kind of Machavellian character who could
- 9:49Speaker 5: convince people to do anything, you know, sort of a
- 9:53Speaker 5: sort of a tough guy, but you know, not to
- 9:55Speaker 5: be trusted. And yeah, and so I went met with
- 10:00Speaker 5: the producers with with Seth Rogan and Eric Kripkey in
- 10:05Speaker 5: those guys, and decided to jump on it.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it's bloody good, isn't it. Because obviously it's it's funny,
- 10:10Speaker 4: it's hyper violent as well, and so it's sort of
- 10:15Speaker 4: you know, mocks the superhero thing, but also a real
- 10:19Speaker 4: you know, holds up a mirtor to what's going on,
- 10:20Speaker 4: particularly in America, I guess. But weirdly, you can't really
- 10:23Speaker 4: keep up because what happens on the show, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 4: it should be worse than what's happening in real life,
- 10:30Speaker 4: but then all of a sudden, real life catches up.
- 10:32Speaker 3: It's the weirdest thing.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Actually, they call it the Devil's Writers Room because Eric Kripkey,
- 10:36Speaker 5: I mean he writes about things that are of concern,
- 10:39Speaker 5: of importance to him. Yes, So like in the first season,
- 10:42Speaker 5: you know, he wrote a lot about sort of sexual assaults.
- 10:44Speaker 5: And in the second season, you know, it was you know,
- 10:49Speaker 5: sort of racism and stuff. And when both of those
- 10:52Speaker 5: seasons came out, it just happened to coincide with, you know,
- 10:56Speaker 5: the Me Too movement and Black Lives Matter. So he's
- 10:58Speaker 5: kind of like gazing into a crystal. And in this
- 11:01Speaker 5: season he's sort of written. One of the characters on
- 11:03Speaker 5: the show sort of you know, is you know head Christ. Yeah,
- 11:07Speaker 5: he thinks he's God and stuff and literally, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 5: on the clock, you know, the President of the United States,
- 11:16Speaker 5: you know, issues this picture of him allegedly is Jesus
- 11:19Speaker 5: Christ as a doctor.
- 11:22Speaker 3: He was a But.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Well that's actually really true and a really good point,
- 11:26Speaker 2: you know, because the world has got so extreme now,
- 11:28Speaker 2: you know, so these these characters don't see is extreme
- 11:31Speaker 2: because actually they're parodying themselves now, you know what I mean,
- 11:35Speaker 2: these characters. But let me ask you, in terms of
- 11:39Speaker 2: your career, and you've obviously had a massive amount of success,
- 11:43Speaker 2: is it the point for you now where you simply
- 11:46Speaker 2: get asked to play a part or are you still
- 11:48Speaker 2: having to audition or is it cal Would you like
- 11:51Speaker 2: this part?
- 11:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's mainly a you know, an incoming phone
- 11:56Speaker 5: called business and I get offered, you know, a bunch
- 11:58Speaker 5: of stuff, the stuff that I'd like to do, you know,
- 12:01Speaker 5: all the stuff that you know with you know, directors
- 12:06Speaker 5: that you know you've admired for so long that stuff
- 12:10Speaker 5: is worth you know, chasing and that stuff you you know, Yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 5: you know you want to work with a you know,
- 12:15Speaker 5: a Spielberg or a Chris Nolan or something. Yeah, you
- 12:17Speaker 5: go and you take the meetings and you go on
- 12:19Speaker 5: an audition.
- 12:21Speaker 1: The Whole Archy Big Show week days from four on
- 12:24Speaker 1: Radio Hiarchy The Wary Big Show Podcast.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Well, that's right, because it is different. There's different kinds
- 12:31Speaker 4: of acting as well as you know Jason and I
- 12:35Speaker 4: to a far lesser extent. No, you know, you know
- 12:38Speaker 4: it's pretty pretty you know, you're doing pretty big stuff
- 12:40Speaker 4: when you're doing what we do in the Shadows or
- 12:44Speaker 4: particularly Willington Paranormal and Broken Wood is a different kind
- 12:46Speaker 4: of an acting to a Gormsby or whatever it might be.
- 12:50Speaker 4: And then for you to be doing superhero stuff, so
- 12:52Speaker 4: you're doing Dread, you're doing Billy Butcher, you're doing the
- 12:56Speaker 4: Mortal Kombat. You know, like that these humans see if
- 12:59Speaker 4: they have a really fill a space, you can't be
- 13:02Speaker 4: quiet and reserved and real and so that's sort of
- 13:06Speaker 4: the performance that you've give him.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Something like Out of the Blue is completely different. Oh
- 13:09Speaker 3: it is.
- 13:09Speaker 5: It's tonally, it's completely different. I mean, but you always
- 13:12Speaker 5: have to find you know the truth at the moment
- 13:15Speaker 5: and find the reality. But then also you know, you
- 13:19Speaker 5: have to take that artistic license and have fun with it. Yes,
- 13:22Speaker 5: otherwise watching paint dry, you're.
- 13:25Speaker 3: In the wrong show.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Yeah, And that is that the sort of stuff because
- 13:28Speaker 4: obviously a lot of key actors they go away so
- 13:30Speaker 4: they can come back, or they go away and then
- 13:32Speaker 4: eventually they'll come back.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Marden and I'm probably gonna say, is Henderson.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Who comes back and he does quite a lot of
- 13:40Speaker 4: drama where he's you know, the father figure. I've never
- 13:44Speaker 4: heard the guy talk in my life, but he seems
- 13:46Speaker 4: to tune up in quite a lot of you know,
- 13:47Speaker 4: small New Zealand drama stuff. Is that the sort of
- 13:49Speaker 4: stuff that you were always open to?
- 13:51Speaker 3: Oh?
- 13:51Speaker 5: No, absolutely, I'm always no, no, But I'm serious, you know,
- 13:56Speaker 5: on the lookout because I grew up and I was
- 13:58Speaker 5: I was inspired by the like of you know, as
- 14:01Speaker 5: I said, you know, Sam and Bruno and and obviously
- 14:04Speaker 5: Tim and you know, good New Zealand movies that are
- 14:07Speaker 5: represented of our culture, whether it be like Utu or
- 14:10Speaker 5: Smash Palace or Warriors Movie. You know the films that
- 14:13Speaker 5: Tiger made early in his career. You know that those
- 14:16Speaker 5: those those stories that are intrinsically New Zealand. I want
- 14:19Speaker 5: to continue to be a part of the New Zealand
- 14:21Speaker 5: film industry and I want to find those stories to tell.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well listen, because I was thinking about it, Carl.
- 14:28Speaker 2: You know, in terms of broken, for example, I mean
- 14:30Speaker 2: I I'm pretty India. Now you could put in a word.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I mean I can put in a word. Really, you know,
- 14:38Speaker 2: we see what happened. I mean, I audition.
- 14:40Speaker 3: You know how this industry is.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Man, I can't I can't make promises, but it may
- 14:45Speaker 2: be that, you know, I get you a character's name,
- 14:48Speaker 2: Ray Raise, I don't even remember. He just runs a
- 14:55Speaker 2: paba and pizza plays. I can't remember Raised. Long lost
- 14:58Speaker 2: twin brother turns up. Yes, there you go, mate.
- 15:01Speaker 4: And then you've got Mortal Kombat that's just been doing
- 15:03Speaker 4: the rounds as well.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right. Super excited about this fellas. It's, without
- 15:08Speaker 5: a doubt, the most physically challenging role I've ever done.
- 15:12Speaker 5: In my life, I won't like because I finished the
- 15:14Speaker 5: sort of season four of The Boys, and I had
- 15:16Speaker 5: some fuel in the tank and I was like, I
- 15:17Speaker 5: said to my agent, find me something with a bit
- 15:19Speaker 5: of action. And they came at me with us and
- 15:21Speaker 5: they went, oh, this is great. And then Johnny was
- 15:25Speaker 5: one of the great older right, yeah, this is an age.
- 15:29Speaker 5: It's not it's not the point in our story that
- 15:32Speaker 5: we find Johnny. He's a washed up actor and he's
- 15:35Speaker 5: neglected as training. The world's forgotten about him, and it's
- 15:38Speaker 5: this very juncture that gets called upon to save the earth,
- 15:41Speaker 5: which I thought was really fun. That's great. So the
- 15:43Speaker 5: potential for comedy was was amazing. So yeah, so it
- 15:48Speaker 5: was like it was months and months of of of
- 15:50Speaker 5: of training. And when I told my kids that I
- 15:53Speaker 5: was going to be Johnny Cage, they were like, big
- 15:57Speaker 5: fan base, don't f it up, no pressure, do.
- 16:02Speaker 3: You you know, isn't it you know?
- 16:04Speaker 2: I look at someone like Liam Neeson for example, where
- 16:08Speaker 2: he seems to have made a conscious decision somewhere along.
- 16:11Speaker 3: In his career.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I'm doing action. Yeah you know what I mean, That's
- 16:15Speaker 2: that's who I am now. I mean, is that something
- 16:17Speaker 2: that you ever considered that I'm just going to go
- 16:19Speaker 2: on this one genre or you still want to stay
- 16:21Speaker 2: open to those other roles.
- 16:23Speaker 5: No, man, I'm open to anything. And you know it's
- 16:27Speaker 5: I'm just interested in playing as many different kind of
- 16:30Speaker 5: characters as I can. And I think, you know, people
- 16:32Speaker 5: often get caught up in the oh, you're you're in
- 16:34Speaker 5: this genre and that genre and stuff. And it's like
- 16:36Speaker 5: I think, if you look at my film og for
- 16:38Speaker 5: my work, I like the idea of that. You know,
- 16:41Speaker 5: you'd hold these characters up and go, my god, that's
- 16:43Speaker 5: the same guy, you know. Yeah, And I guess it's
- 16:46Speaker 5: just the question is you know, knowing if it's action
- 16:49Speaker 5: of when you should get off that bus, when it's
- 16:51Speaker 5: when it's when it's time to stop doing it. Your
- 16:53Speaker 5: body will tell you, yeah, when it can no longer go,
- 16:56Speaker 5: when you can no longer get out of the Porsche
- 16:58Speaker 5: with agility, styling, grace.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Is the time to stop, and once when you I've
- 17:05Speaker 4: always wondered about this because like Jermaine was over doing
- 17:09Speaker 4: what was it what we do in the Shadows over
- 17:11Speaker 4: in Vancouver, and he was talking about the hours that
- 17:14Speaker 4: they do over there compared to what they do so
- 17:16Speaker 4: sort of like seven and eighty hour days every single day. Yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 4: and they're doing nights as well, but asking how especially
- 17:24Speaker 4: with that with comedy, it's hard to be funny after
- 17:28Speaker 4: ten hours, twelve hours, fourteen hours, and they're doing sixteen, seventeen,
- 17:31Speaker 4: eighteen hours. That is still just standing over there. Those
- 17:35Speaker 4: are the days that you're doing.
- 17:36Speaker 3: It is a standard day.
- 17:37Speaker 5: You know, you got your twelve hour day, then you've
- 17:39Speaker 5: got an hour for lunch and our for your hair, wardrobe, makeup,
- 17:42Speaker 5: all that stuff. You're traveling an hour to get to
- 17:45Speaker 5: work there and back, and then if you're doing overtime,
- 17:47Speaker 5: you know you're you're working long days. I can tell
- 17:50Speaker 5: people how hard we work. You know, you tried doing
- 17:52Speaker 5: that for seven months in a row. It's a slog.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Well, you know, and this is a thing that's every
- 17:57Speaker 3: now and again.
- 17:58Speaker 4: You know, one of the soundings will release a recording
- 18:01Speaker 4: of a Christian bale or somebody else exploding on set
- 18:05Speaker 4: and it's like, fuck, there's thirty of those per job. Yeah,
- 18:08Speaker 4: you know, because people are like absolutely exhausted. Yeah, it's exhausting,
- 18:12Speaker 4: exhausting work.
- 18:13Speaker 2: It was really interesting, you know when Xena and Hercules
- 18:17Speaker 2: and all that stuff was going on, and you get
- 18:19Speaker 2: the American actors over to New Zealand and the mentality
- 18:23Speaker 2: was so different.
- 18:23Speaker 5: You know.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I remember being in a situation and we finished the
- 18:26Speaker 2: scene and I was working with an American actress and
- 18:30Speaker 2: the crew were picking stuff up and I went to
- 18:32Speaker 2: pick something up and she.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Was like, oh no, no, no, no, what are you doing?
- 18:35Speaker 3: What are you doing?
- 18:35Speaker 2: And I was like just helping, helping pick stuff up,
- 18:39Speaker 2: you know, because they're really staunch about, you know, looking
- 18:42Speaker 2: after the actors and the talent and all that sort
- 18:45Speaker 2: of stuff.
- 18:45Speaker 3: But seventeen or eighteen hour days.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Yes, it's your union, that's the actual issue. It's all unionized. Yes,
- 18:51Speaker 5: you know, don't you dare take someone else's job.
- 18:53Speaker 4: You has taken someone else's job, Jason. You either got
- 18:56Speaker 4: smacked over by a gaff or something like that.
- 18:58Speaker 3: But I was.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Genuinely taken back by her horror of what i've and
- 19:01Speaker 2: it was simply trying to help you something up.
- 19:04Speaker 5: But that's very indicative of how we are here in
- 19:06Speaker 5: New Zealand. You know, you're shooting a movie, you say,
- 19:09Speaker 5: on a farm somewhere. It's like you're carrying stuff like
- 19:12Speaker 5: the cruise carrying stuff.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Well, it was the last time that Jaycee did. Yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I mean, don't get me wrong.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I was stoked to find that out, you know, and
- 19:20Speaker 2: never tried to help ever again.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Yeah, spirit, that's the spirit.
- 19:24Speaker 4: And what other stuff have you got coming up now?
- 19:26Speaker 4: Because you come back and I'm assuming you're trying to
- 19:29Speaker 4: do like two or three jobs a year. Is that
- 19:31Speaker 4: sort of what you look at.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been pretty full on for the last few years.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Because how long does how long did the Boys take
- 19:37Speaker 4: to shoot a season?
- 19:38Speaker 5: The Boys was about seven to eight months, m K
- 19:43Speaker 5: was about four. Film was filmed on the Goldie Oh yes,
- 19:48Speaker 5: I love it over there.
- 19:49Speaker 3: I got to say, I do like it. I'm not
- 19:52Speaker 3: going to move, but it's so close.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, and they were ten ten hour days over there,
- 19:59Speaker 5: which is so civilized.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 5: But yeah, so no, I mean the last thing I
- 20:06Speaker 5: filmed actually was a colonoscopy.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Yeah. So that's due to be released later on the year.
- 20:14Speaker 3: We're just finishing up some.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Special musical on it and should be a ripper. I
- 20:18Speaker 4: have one of those on my fortieth birth and actually
- 20:21Speaker 4: was an enema. I went and had an anima because yeah,
- 20:24Speaker 4: and yeah, it wasn't as life changing as I anticipated
- 20:28Speaker 4: or hoped.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I got to say, oh bloody loved it.
- 20:31Speaker 5: You know, they took me in there, they knocked me out.
- 20:33Speaker 5: When I woke up, I was high as a ka.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Let me as Sammy and said, we don't need to
- 20:37Speaker 5: see you for five years. I can we do this
- 20:39Speaker 5: again next week?
- 20:40Speaker 3: This is great? Yeah, totally. Well, actually I should get
- 20:43Speaker 3: onto that, especially some of my.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Seriously, on a serious note, if you haven't done it,
- 20:47Speaker 5: and you get into a certain age, go and do it,
- 20:49Speaker 5: because the rates of us cancer in this country are
- 20:52Speaker 5: off the rectorscale.
- 20:55Speaker 3: What I had a colonoscopy. Jase, you're in your late thirties.
- 20:58Speaker 3: You're here, man, you gotta get onto it. Yeah, well
- 21:00Speaker 3: that's why I thought too. You know, I just hit
- 21:02Speaker 3: my forties and like, nows the time exactly? And your
- 21:06Speaker 3: kids now you've got have you got a couple of
- 21:07Speaker 3: boys too? Yeah?
- 21:08Speaker 5: They must be now you know age me? How old
- 21:10Speaker 5: are they? Yeah? Twenty and twenty five?
- 21:13Speaker 3: Do you go? Yeah? So no, tys? Really? Now? Man?
- 21:16Speaker 4: The idea of sticking around here, you could you could
- 21:19Speaker 4: go and hav an imagine ground with us man?
- 21:21Speaker 3: Or what's again? Brisbane?
- 21:24Speaker 5: Oh the rugby you're inviting. I'm coming for sure, mate,
- 21:30Speaker 5: I'll be there.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Yeah, And what else do you have going on? When
- 21:34Speaker 4: you bet you've still got the grandparents? They're all still
- 21:36Speaker 4: up here? Are they down and welly or no, everyone's
- 21:38Speaker 4: up here. So you know, I just like to just
- 21:41Speaker 4: to be low key here, like take the boat out
- 21:42Speaker 4: for a fish nice you know, and just do all
- 21:45Speaker 4: things for you, rounds of golf, just to just relax,
- 21:48Speaker 4: you know. That was the other thing I wanted to
- 21:49Speaker 4: ask you about, was that end up on It was
- 21:52Speaker 4: on Amazon, because there's another recap that you've been on
- 21:55Speaker 4: the last few months at.
- 21:57Speaker 3: The Bluff with Prianka Chopa.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Yeah, on Amazon's Yeah Pirate movie. Good fun, good fun,
- 22:05Speaker 5: and yeah it from the Bluff into the boys and
- 22:07Speaker 5: now intermrtal people get well, I'm sick of me, Jason.
- 22:13Speaker 5: It's sorry. Yeah, it is time for me to just
- 22:17Speaker 5: take a little breather. I think, Yeah, that's the that's
- 22:20Speaker 5: the plan.
- 22:21Speaker 6: What's your handicap and golf? It's not flash fellas, and
- 22:24Speaker 6: that's the problem. I'm on a seventeen moment. What's yours?
- 22:29Speaker 6: When he said, right, we should play for money?
- 22:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Well I need a partner at the.
- 22:36Speaker 3: House. Is that right? You beg for a bit? Yeah, yeah,
- 22:39Speaker 3: back for a bit, which is good.
- 22:40Speaker 5: But no, listen, I've just sort of finished this two
- 22:43Speaker 5: week tour of promoting Mortal. I couldn't be happy with it.
- 22:46Speaker 5: The movie plays so well. I've seen it with.
- 22:49Speaker 3: A bunch of fans a couple of times.
- 22:51Speaker 5: And you know, if you're a fan of you know,
- 22:54Speaker 5: martial arts movies or just big fun you know, Blockbuster
- 22:58Speaker 5: Summer Entertainment, it's a great watch.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Can I ask you, cal you know, when you're sort
- 23:03Speaker 2: of having some downtime, how long is it before you
- 23:06Speaker 2: start getting ansty?
- 23:07Speaker 3: You know, when you start going?
- 23:08Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 23:09Speaker 2: I need you know because I don't know if for
- 23:11Speaker 2: your anything like me, I don't like sitting around in
- 23:13Speaker 2: my head for too long. Need to be doing stuff.
- 23:15Speaker 2: How long before you go no, I need to go
- 23:17Speaker 2: back to work.
- 23:17Speaker 3: It changes all the time.
- 23:19Speaker 5: I don't idle well either, but you know, just the
- 23:23Speaker 5: sort of the first quarter of this year for me
- 23:25Speaker 5: has just been all taken up promoting these projects. Yes,
- 23:28Speaker 5: so I'm not at the stage yet where when I'm
- 23:30Speaker 5: jumping up and down to go back to work, but
- 23:32Speaker 5: I will know when that script lands I'm on my
- 23:35Speaker 5: desk and I start reading it and start feeling, you know,
- 23:39Speaker 5: I'm excited.
- 23:40Speaker 3: That'll be the point for sure. Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 4: The great thing about that Mortal Kombat, the trailer that
- 23:45Speaker 4: came out, which is all I've seen so far. It's
- 23:48Speaker 4: not a great track record with video games, man, they
- 23:50Speaker 4: managed to really fuck them up. But what looks great
- 23:53Speaker 4: about this is it's clearly got a sense of humor
- 23:56Speaker 4: about itself. Yeah, it's got a sense of humor about
- 23:59Speaker 4: Johnny Kay. Yeah, you're playing it very very straight, but
- 24:02Speaker 4: they're making you do some funny shit, and I think
- 24:04Speaker 4: that's the key to it, right, So there has to
- 24:06Speaker 4: be another dimension, especially to those fighting films with a
- 24:09Speaker 4: zero storyline.
- 24:10Speaker 3: It's just.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Round one, round two, round three. It looks like a
- 24:15Speaker 4: lot of fun. And the reviews online have been great.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Views have been fantastic, they really have, and particularly from
- 24:19Speaker 5: the audience of the fans that have seen it. And
- 24:23Speaker 5: you know, one hundred percent of the critics love this
- 24:27Speaker 5: movie sixty nine percent at the time, so I will
- 24:34Speaker 5: take that that's a win.
- 24:35Speaker 4: But I guarantee you that it's one of those films
- 24:38Speaker 4: with the score from you know, from the audience there
- 24:41Speaker 4: is always going to be higher because it's not. To
- 24:44Speaker 4: be honest, it's not really for the critics.
- 24:45Speaker 3: No it's not, it's not. But no, it's fun.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Like the thing that this movie does so well as
- 24:52Speaker 5: it does strike the balance between delivering you know, your
- 24:55Speaker 5: top notch martial arts and then with the character like
- 24:58Speaker 5: Johnny Cage totally you know, his sort of fight you know,
- 25:02Speaker 5: at times sits more in the world of like Jackie Chan.
- 25:04Speaker 5: There's this element of fun physical comedy that I get
- 25:07Speaker 5: to do, you know, which was a lot of fun
- 25:09Speaker 5: to shoot.
- 25:10Speaker 3: But yeah, boy, as I said before.
- 25:12Speaker 5: Challenging, you know when you're learning, like, you know, a
- 25:14Speaker 5: twenty five beat move, you know, fight move, and they
- 25:18Speaker 5: set up a dolly a tracking shot and you have
- 25:21Speaker 5: to remember them all.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a nightmare. Yeah, I mean not that I
- 25:24Speaker 2: could ever do it. You don't do that, They're like, oh, yeah,
- 25:27Speaker 2: that's it. I remember doing the thirty move stunt. I
- 25:30Speaker 2: didn't even pretend to hit my head when I had
- 25:32Speaker 2: to do that.
- 25:33Speaker 3: So are you telling me there's no martial arts on
- 25:35Speaker 3: Broken Wood? Not at this point? Missing a trick here,
- 25:40Speaker 3: I am missing a trick.
- 25:41Speaker 4: I know it'll be good to get you on there,
- 25:43Speaker 4: Carl and you turn up scene one, but you but
- 25:47Speaker 4: you get murdered.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Yeah, people get really excited.
- 25:52Speaker 4: You're gone. Yes, I've seen one. Yeah, what else.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Is happening to?
- 25:57Speaker 4: Man, there was another question I had, but it's gone
- 25:58Speaker 4: out of my head. Oh when's it open?
- 26:01Speaker 5: Oh well it's open from today. Yeah, open from today
- 26:06Speaker 5: in cinemas. Now do your muma favor. Leave her at home,
- 26:09Speaker 5: get out of the house and go and see this movie.
- 26:11Speaker 5: In fact, take her along too, because like, if you're
- 26:13Speaker 5: a fan of movies like Sense and Sensibility and The Godfather,
- 26:18Speaker 5: and this.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Is a movie for you, you know, your mum of
- 26:22Speaker 3: Medicine County right in that wheelhouse fellas beautiful, Will cal Urban,
- 26:29Speaker 3: thanks so much for coming in, mate. It's been an
- 26:31Speaker 3: absolute treat. Cheers for having me, guys, I really really
- 26:33Speaker 3: do appreciate it.
- 26:34Speaker 5: You know. You know I was talking to Tiger about
- 26:38Speaker 5: about your your your issue. I mean clearly, and not
- 26:40Speaker 5: to be disparated, but you're kind of in New Zealand
- 26:43Speaker 5: sort of internationally on the D list a little bit.
- 26:45Speaker 5: But he is n but he has he's written a
- 26:49Speaker 5: Star Wars movie, and I think he's got a way
- 26:51Speaker 5: to get you guys off the D into the APE.
- 26:54Speaker 4: I think so as well, that would be nice. I mean,
- 26:56Speaker 4: I you know, I don't mind it all being on
- 26:58Speaker 4: the D, but my friend of the Dad, yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Yeah, we like that. You love to get into the well. Look,
- 27:05Speaker 3: if the A was there, you know, then certainly i'd
- 27:07Speaker 3: give it a crack. But because he's written you guys
- 27:10Speaker 3: from Roles all.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Right, A couple of androids and c three keys.
- 27:16Speaker 3: You play Obi Wan Minogi.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Very nice Jedi and unfortunately I left the bad guy,
- 27:23Speaker 5: so you're Darf Hoyt. Because Carl Solo was taken, sort
- 27:28Speaker 5: of got the build.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Of two D two though true. Beautiful oh good follows
