The Kanawha River is alive again with the return of sternwheel boats for the fifth straight year at the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta — and one proud owner, Jim Kranz, is keeping his 38-year-old vessel, the Donna Ray, running strong for a century. Built over four years and launched in 1988, the 32-ton boat became his family’s dream when they stumbled upon it 13 years ago. Kranz praises Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin for reviving the event in 2022, and the city is also setting the stage for a dazzling Fourth of July with three fireworks shows — all live-streamed with patriotic tunes…
