- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, he's here in the studio with us. Sean Means.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Sean is a film critic. He's a writer and editor
- 0:08Speaker 1: at the Salt Lake Tribune. You can find his work
- 0:11Speaker 1: at sltrib dot com. His critical work his movie criticisms
- 0:16Speaker 1: will be available at movie cricket dot That.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good morning, mister means good morning. What do you got?
- 0:21Speaker 3: We got three to talk about this week? Okay, we
- 0:24Speaker 3: will start with Regretting You. This is yet another movie
- 0:28Speaker 3: based on a Colleen Hoover novel, Like Like It Ends
- 0:31Speaker 3: with Us? Was the Blake Lively movie? Anybody getting sued
- 0:36Speaker 3: around this one? Not yet, but it's early. The The
- 0:42Speaker 3: practical advantage to a Colling Hoover movie is that it
- 0:45Speaker 3: allows people in book clubs to only have to waste
- 0:49Speaker 3: two hours watching the movie and being able to fake it.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It's helpful.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's it's a timesaver. In this one, it is.
- 0:57Speaker 3: It is soap opera all over the place. But we
- 1:00Speaker 3: start with a Alison Williams as Morgan. She is has
- 1:06Speaker 3: a high school boyfriend played by Scott Eastwood. Her sister
- 1:13Speaker 3: is got a high school boyfriend who is Scott Easwood's
- 1:16Speaker 3: best friend played by Dave Franco. You see them young
- 1:20Speaker 3: and in high school, which is bad because it's really
- 1:23Speaker 3: bad they're not because you know, Alison Williams, you know,
- 1:27Speaker 3: is not in high school anymore. And so we cut
- 1:31Speaker 3: cut forward to seventeen years because in high school Alison
- 1:35Speaker 3: Willis finds out she's pregnant. So we cut forward seventeen years.
- 1:41Speaker 3: There Alison Williams and Scott Eastwood are married. Will Fitzgerald
- 1:46Speaker 3: who's the sister, and Dave Franco are married.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And have and have a baby. And a minute, what
- 1:54Speaker 1: do you what'd you rate this movie?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah? Not good? Then I don't need to know this
- 1:58Speaker 2: much about it.
- 1:59Speaker 3: But as a Williams has a daughter, sixteen played by
- 2:02Speaker 3: McKenna Grace, so and then Scott Eastwood and Will fiz
- 2:06Speaker 3: Gerald die in a car crash.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Turns out they've been having an affair. It gets very out.
- 2:11Speaker 3: It's very much a soap opera, and it goes exactly
- 2:13Speaker 3: where you think it's gonna go. The one good thing
- 2:14Speaker 3: in this is the McKenna grace is no longer a
- 2:18Speaker 3: child actress.
- 2:18Speaker 2: She's it's her first sort of grown up role.
- 2:21Speaker 3: You would know her, probably mostly from the two recent
- 2:24Speaker 3: Ghostbusters movies. She was Egan's daughter and granddaughter. She was
- 2:28Speaker 3: the cool one. Okay, she's a good actress. She will
- 2:32Speaker 3: looking forward to her as an adult. Now, all right,
- 2:35Speaker 3: two stars for the stars, Yeah, all right, all right,
- 2:37Speaker 3: Frankenstein Frankenstein. You would think, why do we need another
- 2:42Speaker 3: frankens Sein movie. We've had so many Frankenstein movies.
- 2:45Speaker 2: We're gonna get more.
- 2:45Speaker 3: We're gonna get more, but we're getting this one. And
- 2:47Speaker 3: the reason we're getting this one and the reason why
- 2:49Speaker 3: it's worth getting this one is it's directed by Giamo Adultro,
- 2:53Speaker 3: who has been wanting to make a Frankenstein movie forever.
- 2:56Speaker 3: And you can tell that by all the movies he
- 2:58Speaker 3: has made that look like they could be Frankenston movies.
- 3:00Speaker 3: You look at Crimson Peak, The Shape of Water, pretty
- 3:03Speaker 3: much everything. Uh, the Pinocchio movie he did, the the
- 3:08Speaker 3: stop motion Pinocchio he did.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh.
- 3:11Speaker 3: In this one, you have is basically in two parts.
- 3:13Speaker 3: The first part you have Victor Frankenstein telling his story
- 3:17Speaker 3: of how he uh made the monster and and uh
- 3:21Speaker 3: and was and was a real uh awful human being
- 3:24Speaker 3: doing it because once he once he had the monster,
- 3:27Speaker 3: he didn't know how to raise the monster and and
- 3:30Speaker 3: he reverted to his parents, his father's uh type of parenting,
- 3:34Speaker 3: which is basically, you know, beating him. Who plays Victor
- 3:37Speaker 3: Victory is Oscar Isaac. Then the second half comes and
- 3:41Speaker 3: it's the monster's turn to to tell the story. And
- 3:44Speaker 3: that's when that's when the movie really kicks, when it
- 3:46Speaker 3: gets that's when it gets great.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Jacob A. Lordie plays a very tall, hot monster. He's
- 3:52Speaker 2: a hot monster.
- 3:53Speaker 3: He is he is a he is a scary monster,
- 3:55Speaker 3: but he is still a hot monster, yes, which is.
- 3:58Speaker 1: In fitting what the book originally well, yeah, he has
- 4:02Speaker 1: described as good looking in the book.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So this is this is this is Gamaud de Altar
- 4:08Speaker 3: working on all cylinders. He's you know, the the the
- 4:11Speaker 3: style and the atmosphere is exactly what you want out
- 4:15Speaker 3: of this. And Jacob Alordi is really good and really
- 4:21Speaker 3: cool monster.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So three and a half I heard it. It is.
- 4:26Speaker 2: It is in theaters this.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Week here and then in three weeks it will be
- 4:31Speaker 3: on Netflix. I would recommend see it now, go see
- 4:34Speaker 3: it in the theater. It's it's a very cool experience.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So I heard an interview with del Toro, and one
- 4:40Speaker 1: fact about his life that came out what his father
- 4:43Speaker 1: won the lottery when he was a little kid, six
- 4:46Speaker 1: million dollars. They bought a big mansion. He said, I
- 4:49Speaker 1: was like the little Danny boy of Danny in the Shining.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I rode my dricycle throughout the house. And then his
- 4:56Speaker 1: father got kidnapped.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yanks, because he's got six million naps are yeah, all right? Anyway,
- 5:00Speaker 3: let's move on to Springsteen Deliver Me from Nowhere. This
- 5:05Speaker 3: has been the long awaited musical biography of Bruce Springsteen.
- 5:11Speaker 3: It only takes one section of his life, starting in
- 5:15Speaker 3: eighty one. He's getting off the River tour and then
- 5:19Speaker 3: what he is deciding what he's going to do next.
- 5:22Speaker 3: So he holds up in a rental house in New
- 5:23Speaker 3: Jersey to start writing songs.
- 5:26Speaker 2: This is before Patty. This is before before Patty.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yes, and as for Jillian and before Julian before that.
- 5:34Speaker 3: So he's alone and he's trying to deal with some stuff,
- 5:39Speaker 3: and he's got a lot of memories of his childhood,
- 5:41Speaker 3: his very abusive father and also just what we what
- 5:47Speaker 3: we now recognize as depression and how he tried to
- 5:52Speaker 3: work through that through the music. And he's the songs
- 5:56Speaker 3: he's writing in this In this period, they he writes
- 6:01Speaker 3: enough songs that he decides he's got a double album going.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And some of them are bangers, and some are rock
- 6:05Speaker 3: and roll songs, and some of them are like really quiet,
- 6:08Speaker 3: introspective character studies almost and they're very unlike his usual stuff,
- 6:13Speaker 3: and he decides that's what he wants to lead with,
- 6:17Speaker 3: that's what he wants to go with, and he wants
- 6:19Speaker 3: to put.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Them all together in an album.
- 6:20Speaker 3: He has a little four track cassette recorder just him
- 6:26Speaker 3: and him and his guitar and his harmonica and no,
- 6:29Speaker 3: you know, not with not with the Street Band. And
- 6:31Speaker 3: originally he says, Okay, I'm gonna do these as a
- 6:33Speaker 3: demo and then we can take them to the Street
- 6:35Speaker 3: Band and then you know, we make you know, proper
- 6:38Speaker 3: rock songs out of them. But as he's going, he's like, no, no, no,
- 6:41Speaker 3: they got to stay this raw form.
- 6:44Speaker 2: And the first one he.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Wrote was titled Nebraska Nebraska Album. And so it's about
- 6:52Speaker 3: him using using the music to try to work through
- 6:56Speaker 3: these issues of his and realizing that that even that's
- 6:59Speaker 3: not enough and he needs help. This is so I mean,
- 7:04Speaker 3: if this movie had just been a regular biopic of
- 7:08Speaker 3: you know, I'm I'm Bruce Springsteen and I'm gonna and
- 7:11Speaker 3: like like pretty much the way Timothy Shallamy did with
- 7:14Speaker 3: Dylan A complete unknown. If if, if that's all what
- 7:17Speaker 3: sort of you know, long long expanse of of of
- 7:20Speaker 3: a life, this will still.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Be a great movie.
- 7:22Speaker 3: But to concentrate into this degree on this part of
- 7:25Speaker 3: Springsteen's life, and to get so personal to talk about it,
- 7:29Speaker 3: to talk about his his long term and and he
- 7:31Speaker 3: says still ongoing battle of depression is brilliant. And it
- 7:37Speaker 3: helps that the actor is Jeremy Allen White, who we
- 7:40Speaker 3: all know from the Bear. He channels so beautiful. He sings,
- 7:47Speaker 3: he sings all the songs. It's it's him saying I
- 7:50Speaker 3: had to learn how to play guitar, had to learn
- 7:51Speaker 3: how to play guitar, learn how to play harmonica, and
- 7:54Speaker 3: do you know? And and and he sounds he sounds right,
- 7:58Speaker 3: he said, he sounds He said he'd wake up in
- 7:59Speaker 3: the running and just scream for a while to try.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I heard a little clip from it today and his
- 8:06Speaker 1: voice didn't sound quiet as it's a springs.
- 8:09Speaker 3: It's not quite no, I mean, it's definitely it's definitely
- 8:11Speaker 3: not Bruce. But it's it's so close that it's really
- 8:14Speaker 3: good now And but that's not that's not the entirety
- 8:18Speaker 3: of the performance though. It's also getting into you know,
- 8:21Speaker 3: watching this guy deal with the demons in his life
- 8:24Speaker 3: and and the idea that you know, just because you're rich,
- 8:28Speaker 3: you know, you're you're an up and cooming rock star,
- 8:30Speaker 3: doesn't mean you don't have demons and that you are
- 8:32Speaker 3: working them out.
- 8:33Speaker 2: When you do a movie like this, Uh do you?
- 8:36Speaker 2: I mean, who do you think?
- 8:38Speaker 1: Was only Bruce Springsteen fans will go to see this
- 8:40Speaker 1: and other people just won't care.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I don't.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I don't know about that. I think I think there's
- 8:44Speaker 3: front thing. I think there's Jeremy Allen White. Fans will
- 8:46Speaker 3: want to see him and then gets and word of
- 8:49Speaker 3: mouth gets are out. That's good. The other the other
- 8:51Speaker 3: performance here is Jeremy Strong from Succession as John Landau,
- 8:56Speaker 3: who was who is or was uh Springsteen's manager for
- 9:00Speaker 3: forever and part of the movie is about how how
- 9:03Speaker 3: he has to sort of come to terms with figuring
- 9:07Speaker 3: out what it is Bruce is wanting to do with
- 9:09Speaker 3: this album and then once he once he once he
- 9:12Speaker 3: sort of nails that in his own head become his
- 9:15Speaker 3: defender to the record company. And and David Crumholtz is
- 9:20Speaker 3: sort of representing the record company, and you can sort
- 9:22Speaker 3: of see that sort of Weasley record company thing right there.
- 9:26Speaker 3: And uh and and how he has to just sort
- 9:29Speaker 3: of be be the spokesperson for Bruce in that situation.
- 9:33Speaker 3: All right, so great, two really good performances. Jeremy Allen,
- 9:37Speaker 3: WHI is great.
- 9:37Speaker 2: This is a fourth star moview rare stars. So deliver
- 9:43Speaker 2: Me from Nowhere.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Springsteen delivered me from Springsteen is in the name, is
- 9:47Speaker 3: in the title. So yeah, Springsteen delivered me from nowhere.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Right, So there you go. What's what do we got
- 9:51Speaker 2: next week? Next week we have Bagonia Shave your Head
- 9:55Speaker 2: and see and see.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I love that guy's movie.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Asta is Yorgos Lanthemos, who's worked with emmastone now on
- 10:01Speaker 3: Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. It's them together again.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Jesse Plemons in there as well.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Again always good, always always.
- 10:09Speaker 3: He's he's disturbingly good and good and good at being disturbing.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:13Speaker 3: So yeah, that's that's the big one. If I had legs,
- 10:16Speaker 3: I Kick You has been finally coming out next week.
- 10:19Speaker 3: This is the O'Brien, Roseburn and Conan O'Brien. Yeah good, yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 3: I have it's she's good. He's pretty good. Yeah, only
- 10:28Speaker 3: the first time he's ever.
- 10:29Speaker 2: It's dramatic role.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Yeah, so anyway, so but yeah, but going is the
- 10:33Speaker 3: big on next week, all right, thank you?
- 10:35Speaker 1: Seaun means movie Cricket dot net is where you want
- 10:38Speaker 1: to go. Sl trip dot com is where Sean toils away.
