Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to press play, where we're going through the less
- 0:03Speaker 1: than stellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew Shulman.
- 0:06Speaker 1: With me is my beecheek growth Jason Wynn. Now, whether
- 0:08Speaker 1: you're watching along or playing along, it's time to press play.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Noah, Jason.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I feel like we generally start to show off when
- 0:21Speaker 1: we talk about a movie with a very simple question
- 0:23Speaker 1: for each other, which is, are we familiar with this
- 0:27Speaker 1: movie or video game franchise? I don't know, yes, what
- 0:29Speaker 1: do you think?
- 0:30Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, yes, I mean when it comes to Pokemon,
- 0:33Speaker 2: the first movie, when it comes to Pokemon, just to scoach, just.
- 0:38Speaker 1: A coach, a sprinkling of knowledge.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I know her.
- 0:44Speaker 1: You know, I've seen her on the bus. We've like
- 0:47Speaker 1: locked eyes into the little cute nod. But like that's.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Subtle, No, at least between the two of us. Pokemon,
- 0:55Speaker 2: I would say, is one of the main reasons we've
- 0:59Speaker 2: become friends, such good friends.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I think the first time you
- 1:03Speaker 1: and I like hung out, and again, given that we
- 1:05Speaker 1: live in different countries hang out as digital, our first
- 1:09Speaker 1: like real hangout together outside of like podcasting related stuff
- 1:12Speaker 1: was a Pokemon battle.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yes on Pokemon Showdown for for listeners, the context of
- 1:18Speaker 2: me and Drew's relationship with Pokemon is we battle each other,
- 1:22Speaker 2: we trade, we send memes. We we guess each other's
- 1:27Speaker 2: favorite Pokemon for fun and give each other tearless and
- 1:32Speaker 2: compare and rate. Pokemon is in our lives now. Yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 2: like I think.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I think if you look through like our chat history
- 1:40Speaker 1: the two of us, and like the years we've known
- 1:43Speaker 1: each other because of like meeting on this show and
- 1:45Speaker 1: being friends, it is like an even split between like
- 1:48Speaker 1: podcasts related things, stupid memes usually another like fifty percent Pokemon,
- 1:53Speaker 1: fifty percent Transformers or just Pokemon conversation period.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Oh I feel so exposed, But on this format, in
- 2:01Speaker 2: this show, it's a safe space.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And I could not be exactly if anyone's listening to
- 2:05Speaker 1: this and goes like, oh, they're Pokemon of Transformers fans.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I'm unsubscribing. Good, we want you gone. I'm actively requesting
- 2:12Speaker 1: you on subscribe if you disapprove of our love. Oh God,
- 2:18Speaker 1: spreading so bad.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the beef cheek Brothers in a nutshell
- 2:24Speaker 2: is this is the episode dude. I have referred several
- 2:29Speaker 2: times to this movie as Church in our notes and
- 2:34Speaker 2: it's Sunday today, on the day it was recording, and
- 2:36Speaker 2: I feel a spirit to Pikachu, praise, Okius praise, and
- 2:47Speaker 2: in regards to this first movie, I mean you, I've
- 2:50Speaker 2: never worn out a VHS.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Pretty damn close with this one. Oh yeah yeah. I
- 2:54Speaker 1: also I'm gonna show my age here. I not only
- 2:57Speaker 1: did I see this film in featers to the premiere,
- 3:02Speaker 1: I want to french that up for some reason. I
- 3:06Speaker 1: actually I tried to find it and I couldn't. If
- 3:08Speaker 1: I will find it and I will post a photo.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I still have my ticket for the early screening.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Did you I know there's a promo like TCG card
- 3:17Speaker 2: that goes sure, I have it. Also I have a
- 3:20Speaker 2: double check.
- 3:21Speaker 1: But I have like I have Like they were a
- 3:24Speaker 1: little cardboard like like postcard sized cards we got that
- 3:28Speaker 1: were like the poster of the movie and on a
- 3:30Speaker 1: back like an invitation to see it, like early screening.
- 3:33Speaker 2: My god, what a time to be alive. Oh yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 2: Like that is.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Like like I said, Pokemon, like I will even give
- 3:40Speaker 1: them mythologizing of like I remember being a child watching
- 3:43Speaker 1: Saturday morning TV and seeing an ad for Pokemon that
- 3:46Speaker 1: was like zero context it was just like this bus
- 3:49Speaker 1: driver loading a bunch of cartoon critters onto a bus
- 3:53Speaker 1: and then like crushing the bus down and like gotta
- 3:55Speaker 1: catch them all, and then a thing saying like next
- 3:58Speaker 1: Sunday at like eight am, I'm watched.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I'm like what, Yes, what is this? Yeah? I'll be honest,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I don't think I ever watched Pokemon, the Pokemon anime
- 4:09Speaker 2: on television ever. I think I just had VHS is
- 4:12Speaker 2: of like specific episodes and like the first I think
- 4:16Speaker 2: three movies on VHS as well, and I ran those
- 4:19Speaker 2: things into the goddamn ground. Dude, I that that commercially
- 4:22Speaker 2: that you're talking about previewed. I love that. By the way, yes,
- 4:25Speaker 2: let's advertise the product you're about to watch, if you're
- 4:28Speaker 2: not sold already, you dumb motherfucker.
- 4:31Speaker 1: The marketing campaign in America for Pokemon, Like I've I've
- 4:34Speaker 1: done a lot of reading about like like I literally
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'm the middle of reading a book right now written
- 4:38Speaker 1: by these two guys who are just doing kind of
- 4:40Speaker 1: a like history of Pokemon and like why it was
- 4:42Speaker 1: so popular, and like about the move to America and
- 4:44Speaker 1: like wo how it happened, and like where there was
- 4:46Speaker 1: doubts and word unexpectedly exploded. Yeah, very very fun read.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'll find the book and I'll put a link to
- 4:52Speaker 1: it in the notes here. I'd love to Yeah, and yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 1: for sure, I can't even send it to what I'm done.
- 4:56Speaker 1: But they like they talk about how like a big
- 4:58Speaker 1: push over to America was like cutes, he doesn't sell
- 5:01Speaker 1: as well, like we need to like toughen things up
- 5:03Speaker 1: a little bit. And they were shocked at how well
- 5:05Speaker 1: it worked. They didn't think it was gonna work.
- 5:07Speaker 2: How wrong were they? Oh my god, I mean, yeah,
- 5:11Speaker 2: is this a good segue into the recap? Like if
- 5:14Speaker 2: you've been living on an I don't know about it's
- 5:16Speaker 2: so crazy. This is the first time where I'm like,
- 5:19Speaker 2: truly I'm biased, but truly, do I need to recap this?
- 5:23Speaker 2: Do I need to tell you about Pokemon?
- 5:25Speaker 1: I mean, like just just for due diligence in case
- 5:27Speaker 1: there's someone out there who maybe just because of their
- 5:29Speaker 1: age or they were a fan of the game, because again,
- 5:31Speaker 1: the anime and the game differ, sure pretty heavily so
- 5:36Speaker 1: for the sake of people who don't know the movie
- 5:40Speaker 1: at least, it is a basically a longer episode of
- 5:43Speaker 1: the animes. We follow Ashbrock and Misty along with their
- 5:45Speaker 1: collection of Pokemon up to this point, namely a Pikachu
- 5:48Speaker 1: being their big star, getting invited to a mysterious tournament
- 5:51Speaker 1: to meet the Master of Pokemon Trainers, who it turns
- 5:55Speaker 1: out is mew To, a genetically cloned Pokemon of a
- 5:58Speaker 1: mythical Pokemon Mew who decided that hey, Pokemon being slaves
- 6:02Speaker 1: the human that sucks. So I'm going to get rid
- 6:04Speaker 1: of all the humans and also all the Pokemon who
- 6:06Speaker 1: agree to this system, because I don't like you. So
- 6:09Speaker 1: I'm going to make an army of clones like myself,
- 6:11Speaker 1: and we're going to inherit the earth after a giant
- 6:13Speaker 1: storm that kills everybody. And then finally through Ashes self
- 6:16Speaker 1: sacrifice and the realization that it doesn't matter where you
- 6:21Speaker 1: come from or where you were born. It's what you
- 6:22Speaker 1: choose to do with your life and how you make
- 6:24Speaker 1: what you make of it. That's what truly matters. You
- 6:28Speaker 1: need to realize the wrong ways, and the day is saved.
- 6:31Speaker 1: And because this is a cartoon and we need to
- 6:33Speaker 1: keep the show going in some sense, they all have
- 6:36Speaker 1: their memories wiped and it's back to the status quo.
- 6:39Speaker 1: But we as an audience got a really good, emotional
- 6:42Speaker 1: and amazing story that is like really amazing. And like
- 6:45Speaker 1: the fact that the quote from me you two at
- 6:47Speaker 1: the end I were sent written on the exact quote
- 6:48Speaker 1: I will go look it up and say it again
- 6:49Speaker 1: in a minute, is like legitimately used so frequently and
- 6:54Speaker 1: it's such a powerful quote that it's like amazing that
- 6:56Speaker 1: it came from this cartoon.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and then at the very end, Ash is like, well,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I gotta go beat the next gym.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Yeap, just back to the status quo. Yeah, here the
- 7:06Speaker 1: exact quote is because I love it so much, I
- 7:08Speaker 1: see now that the circumstances of one's birth is irrelevant.
- 7:11Speaker 1: It is what you do with the gift of life
- 7:13Speaker 1: that determines who you are. And the fact that I
- 7:17Speaker 1: see this post it sometimes without the attribution to Mewtoo
- 7:21Speaker 1: or Pokemon. So maybe there's someone out there who hasn't
- 7:25Speaker 1: seen the movie. Now you have a rough idea of
- 7:27Speaker 1: what it's about. Yeah, I can't imagine there's someone who
- 7:29Speaker 1: doesn't know the games.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But just in case, Jason, just in case, Yeah, if
- 7:33Speaker 2: you've been living under a rock. In the most literal sense,
- 7:37Speaker 2: I feel like, if you have access to this podcast
- 7:39Speaker 2: and you don't know what a Pikachu is, I legitimately
- 7:42Speaker 2: do want to talk to you because people say living
- 7:45Speaker 2: under a rock, But if you're listening to this podcast,
- 7:47Speaker 2: you you know. But Pokemon was a role playing game
- 7:51Speaker 2: released on the game Boy in Japan, originally in nineteen
- 7:54Speaker 2: ninety six when I was born. I'm as old as
- 7:57Speaker 2: Pokemon itself. Yeahature a game where you could collect Pokemon
- 8:02Speaker 2: or little creatures that you could call your own. You
- 8:04Speaker 2: could battle them, you could trade them with friends, and
- 8:07Speaker 2: that's expanded out into trading cards, anime movies. Plus she's
- 8:12Speaker 2: a walking app something where you sleep and they watch
- 8:16Speaker 2: you sleep, or you catch them when you sleep something.
- 8:19Speaker 2: It just doesn't end. You got to catch them all,
- 8:22Speaker 2: or do you? Because at the moment, Pokemon is the
- 8:26Speaker 2: highest grossing media franchise of all time. That's how big
- 8:31Speaker 2: this is. Yep, that's insane.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it like it's the kind of thing where even like,
- 8:36Speaker 1: you know, there's that joke of like, you know, your
- 8:38Speaker 1: parents just refer to all video games as Nintendo's or
- 8:41Speaker 1: all Pokemon as Pikachu's. Yes, Like yes, my mother gets
- 8:44Speaker 1: a kick out of the fact that because she interacted
- 8:47Speaker 1: with me and Pokemon so much at the young age
- 8:48Speaker 1: that she can recognize what decent handful of the original
- 8:52Speaker 1: one to fifties, So whenever Pokemon kind of like because
- 8:55Speaker 1: it does come in waves. Like she works at a daycare.
- 8:57Speaker 1: She has kids of like like a very young like
- 8:59Speaker 1: five to six year old, and like every few years,
- 9:02Speaker 1: Pokemon is the hottest thing. Again, like it takes over
- 9:04Speaker 1: whatever the other things are. And these kids come in
- 9:07Speaker 1: and then she recognizes most of them and they're like,
- 9:10Speaker 1: what a parent understands this? And it's like it's permeated
- 9:15Speaker 1: the bubble so thoroughly that even people who didn't have
- 9:18Speaker 1: Pokemon growing up but were just tangential to it have
- 9:20Speaker 1: enough base knowledge to interact with it.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah, she's just in the daycare saying, no, you can't
- 9:25Speaker 2: find you behind the truck. That's not an idiot. Here's
- 9:29Speaker 2: your brain, kid.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Come on, we're gonna talk about we think about the movie.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I think we can both up top say this is like,
- 9:35Speaker 1: this is this is legitimately a good movie. Like and again,
- 9:38Speaker 1: like the the anime does differ enough from the games
- 9:42Speaker 1: that it kind of almost feels like two different worlds. Yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but like this movie as a vehicle for Pokemon, as
- 9:50Speaker 1: a vehicle for like telling a story with Pokemon is
- 9:54Speaker 1: just it's so well done.
- 9:55Speaker 2: It's a great movie. I really made a conscious effort
- 9:59Speaker 2: to go in to rewatching this because I didn't have
- 10:01Speaker 2: to rewatch this. I want the listeners to know that
- 10:03Speaker 2: I know this movie like the back of my hand,
- 10:06Speaker 2: and I did not have to watch it. But I
- 10:08Speaker 2: tried to look at it at a critical lens because
- 10:09Speaker 2: the whole conceit of the show is let's look at
- 10:11Speaker 2: the history of video game movies as they came out,
- 10:14Speaker 2: So how does this compare to the rest? And legitimately
- 10:17Speaker 2: trying to be critical and looking at this as an adult,
- 10:20Speaker 2: I couldn't. I had my nostalgia classes fully on this movie. Sick.
- 10:26Speaker 2: It's awesome. No, we're gonna get into specifics, but I
- 10:29Speaker 2: think the biggest takeaway I have of it, just from
- 10:32Speaker 2: a general standpoint is it's a theatrical release, which for
- 10:35Speaker 2: an animated movie, especially back in the day, meant a
- 10:38Speaker 2: big deal. And I don't think that the directors or
- 10:42Speaker 2: anyone involved in the proction of this movie let that slide.
- 10:48Speaker 2: I think they went this is a theatrical movie, and
- 10:50Speaker 2: while this is a kid's property, we don't have to
- 10:54Speaker 2: make it dumb by any means, which is something that
- 10:57Speaker 2: we've been missing from the previous movies. Probably helps that
- 11:01Speaker 2: it's in the anime world, the anime universe, which is
- 11:03Speaker 2: its own separate thing, and so it's a continuation, as
- 11:06Speaker 2: it were. But at the same time, the anime episodes
- 11:10Speaker 2: himself are silly and dumb and four kids, and this
- 11:13Speaker 2: is silly and dumb in terms of dialogue, but the
- 11:15Speaker 2: themes did not have to go as hard as they did,
- 11:18Speaker 2: like it's unreal.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's truly something of how they took what
- 11:23Speaker 1: is otherwise like your classic Saturday morning cartoon show. Were like, yes,
- 11:27Speaker 1: there is a an overarching story, so things.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Do carry over.
- 11:30Speaker 1: If ashcats the Pokemon in one episode, we see in
- 11:33Speaker 1: the next. I know there was a recurring gag in
- 11:35Speaker 1: the first season where he had caught like a dozen
- 11:37Speaker 1: Toros for some reason, and now and now all Pokemon
- 11:41Speaker 1: don't just go to the PC. They go specifically to
- 11:43Speaker 1: Oak's lab just overrun with them for some reason.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, as a ranch now and he's just like, oh
- 11:49Speaker 2: my god, But I will.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Say there is something, and I was curious to know
- 11:53Speaker 1: if you bring it up or not, or if you
- 11:55Speaker 1: if you do know this fact. There was a large
- 11:58Speaker 1: change made to this movie when it came to the Americas.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Go I tried to find trivia about this, specifically looking
- 12:05Speaker 2: for one tidbit, and it seemed to come up where
- 12:08Speaker 2: apparently they added story. Is that correct they removed story?
- 12:14Speaker 1: I think there was some changes, some alterations to kind
- 12:17Speaker 1: of make things fit a little better. But like I
- 12:20Speaker 1: noticed for the first time because I knew this fact,
- 12:22Speaker 1: there is a line in the movie that references to
- 12:25Speaker 1: this point, and like it's kind of a throw away line,
- 12:27Speaker 1: but when you realize the missing chunk, it actually does
- 12:29Speaker 1: kind of like make a connection. So when and we're
- 12:33Speaker 1: jumping ahead a bit, but like when he first brings
- 12:36Speaker 1: out his first three clones, the chars are the Blastos
- 12:38Speaker 1: and the Venosaur, he mentions that he also started with
- 12:41Speaker 1: the three original starters. Yeah, and that is because there
- 12:45Speaker 1: is a segment of this movie that was cut because
- 12:47Speaker 1: it made me to too much of a sympathetic villain. Yes,
- 12:51Speaker 1: and they were afraid it wouldn't play in America. So
- 12:53Speaker 1: there is a small chunk at the beginning of the
- 12:55Speaker 1: movie before basically that takes the place of the narration
- 12:58Speaker 1: we get at the beginning where we see it's almost
- 13:02Speaker 1: like a dream world where a baby mewtwo is growing
- 13:05Speaker 1: up with a charmander, a bulb sort.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Of swell in this little girl.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Oh and eventually the little girl has taken away, like
- 13:12Speaker 1: her experiment fails and that's why he is like so
- 13:14Speaker 1: against humanity because they took away something from him, and
- 13:19Speaker 1: that those three starters were clones of the original ones
- 13:22Speaker 1: that he was cloned with as well.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Wow, I didn't know all of that, that's crazy. Yeah
- 13:27Speaker 2: I did.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And apparently it was thought like, oh, we're making mewtwo
- 13:31Speaker 1: seem too sympathetic. People aren't gonna see him as the villain.
- 13:33Speaker 1: They're gonna like understand him too much. And for a
- 13:36Speaker 1: kid's movie, that's too complex of a concept.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't necessarily agree with that having Youtwo be
- 13:42Speaker 2: a hardcore villain in this because he does have this
- 13:44Speaker 2: redemption arc and he has humanity and so on and
- 13:46Speaker 2: so forth. I still think it works. I know I
- 13:49Speaker 2: heard that, like in the Japanese dubs, he's more sympathetic
- 13:51Speaker 2: and it played better in the story. Again, nostalgic glasses.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I think it's fine, but I mean two segue into
- 13:58Speaker 2: the actual origin of this film. What a what a
- 14:01Speaker 2: hardcore entrance. Yeah, it starts very gibli. There's like these bubbles,
- 14:05Speaker 2: it's ethereal, there's voiceover, and there's like this peak into
- 14:12Speaker 2: consciousness as it were, Right, there's this entire origin for
- 14:16Speaker 2: this individual that just goes so hard. What did I
- 14:22Speaker 2: I think I had a note here that said, just
- 14:24Speaker 2: a Pokemon committing murder to human beings in the first
- 14:29Speaker 2: ten minutes is so raw, Like it's so it's crazy
- 14:34Speaker 2: to open on that.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Like this show, Like again, it was so kid friendly
- 14:38Speaker 1: that like, yes, I know, I think there were episodes
- 14:40Speaker 1: that were like altered for American release because they like
- 14:42Speaker 1: reference guns and they'd want to have guns and a
- 14:44Speaker 1: kid's show and like whatever. But so it was made
- 14:46Speaker 1: very like kid friendly in every way. It could like
- 14:49Speaker 1: no one ever really died or got hurt. But then like, legit,
- 14:53Speaker 1: this is like I'm gonna blow up a lab, killing
- 14:56Speaker 1: hundreds of people. The fact that the scientists are basically
- 14:59Speaker 1: like faceless, nameless, shadowy people, like I think we see
- 15:02Speaker 1: like one of them for a minute, but otherwise they're
- 15:03Speaker 1: all like they're always like purposely that kind of like
- 15:05Speaker 1: that thing the anime does, were like their shadow from
- 15:08Speaker 1: like the hairline down to the nose, right, yeah, like
- 15:10Speaker 1: kind of giving the events like they're just evil menacing
- 15:13Speaker 1: representation of humanity and like the worst of it. And
- 15:16Speaker 1: like it does again it makes it easier to swallow
- 15:19Speaker 1: the pill of me two killing them because they kind
- 15:21Speaker 1: of were assholes. But like at the same time, it's
- 15:23Speaker 1: just like, you're right, it's a Pokemon hardcore murdering people.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean it's it's not only is the
- 15:29Speaker 2: hardcore murdering people. In the span of ten minutes, we
- 15:32Speaker 2: get a tight origin story that explains so's there's a
- 15:36Speaker 2: montage for a bit as well, but it succinctly says
- 15:40Speaker 2: this individual has been enslaved by humans, which, to be fair,
- 15:45Speaker 2: is the entire conceit of the franchise. Is yes, animals
- 15:50Speaker 2: being used for humans, which I have a note for later.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Same, we'll get to it later. Yeah, yeah, that's definitely
- 15:56Speaker 1: that is my only gripe with the movie. And again
- 15:59Speaker 1: it's the small is great.
- 16:00Speaker 2: We will say yeeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, if we had
- 16:03Speaker 2: to be critical, but a children's movie. But yeah, it's
- 16:07Speaker 2: it's it's it's played so well. It's the music, it's
- 16:11Speaker 2: the speed of it. It's they didn't pull back on
- 16:13Speaker 2: the animation at all. He breaks for fire, the armor
- 16:18Speaker 2: that they put on him fucking raw.
- 16:20Speaker 1: It's so yeah, Yes, I'm again like just in the
- 16:25Speaker 1: I have so much Pokemon memorabilia. I think my dog
- 16:29Speaker 1: may have destroyed it. But I had a figure of
- 16:30Speaker 1: the mew two in the armor, and it was like, oh,
- 16:33Speaker 1: among my group of friends who are Pokemon friends, like
- 16:35Speaker 1: that was the like holy grail of coolness was having that.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Yes, I thought you were gonna say, I my dog
- 16:42Speaker 2: destroyed it. But I put my dog in the armor.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I three D printed some armor and I hooked it
- 16:49Speaker 2: up to some tubes that they do not tell me
- 16:54Speaker 2: that thing was fairal.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Uh, oh my god. Okay, I think we do have
- 16:59Speaker 1: to touch on real quick. So is the name mewtwo
- 17:01Speaker 1: is kind of a bum name.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Like well, as a kid, I did have a cat
- 17:05Speaker 2: named Daisy two. It was the kitten of my cat Daisy.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Looking back on it, I cannot tell you one hundred
- 17:12Speaker 2: percent sure whether or not Daisy two even was a girl.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Could have been a boy, and so that is funny.
- 17:17Speaker 2: I do like that.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I had a coworker back in the day. She was
- 17:20Speaker 1: talking about her poor cat was getting a little older,
- 17:23Speaker 1: was nearing the end of his life, and we were
- 17:24Speaker 1: just like, oh, what a cute cat, this beautiful white cat.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And I'm like, what's his name? And she goes, Oh,
- 17:28Speaker 1: his name's mewtwo, and I'm like, excuse me, I don't know.
- 17:31Speaker 1: She's like, I don't know what that is. One of
- 17:34Speaker 1: my net one of my grandchildren named the cat, and
- 17:36Speaker 1: I just sleid it so and I'm just like she was.
- 17:39Speaker 1: She was an older woe when she was like my
- 17:40Speaker 1: mother a little yeah. Yeah, but like, so this older
- 17:43Speaker 1: woman I worked with had a cat named mewtwo. She's like,
- 17:45Speaker 1: I know it was named after a video game character
- 17:47Speaker 1: that my grandkids liked, but that's all I know. And
- 17:49Speaker 1: I'm like, I love this. I love this so much.
- 17:53Speaker 2: That's awesome. She also had a dog named Garbage or
- 17:57Speaker 2: she didn't understand, and again we said that with because
- 18:00Speaker 2: I fucking love garbage or that things. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 1: So I recently watched Sonic the Hedgehog three and it
- 18:07Speaker 1: occurred to me how much mewtwo's voice actor in the
- 18:10Speaker 1: American release has the Keanu Reeves vibe to it.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Oh, and like.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Legitimately, if you told me Kilanu Reeves did the voice
- 18:18Speaker 1: of mewtwo, or if ever redid it and they had
- 18:19Speaker 1: Kanu do it, I'd be like, I fully believe that.
- 18:22Speaker 1: In fact, I am willing to bet that when he
- 18:25Speaker 1: got cast a shadow and he was like, what is
- 18:28Speaker 1: another badass villain in a video game movie that I
- 18:30Speaker 1: could use to model my voicing? After he chose me,
- 18:33Speaker 1: you two in this movie because it is eerially close.
- 18:36Speaker 2: That's fair, that's super fair mewtwo is And again that's
- 18:40Speaker 2: why I like him as a as a villain. I
- 18:41Speaker 2: think it's cool. He's a psychic Pokemon with godlike abilities
- 18:47Speaker 2: who's been tortured. I think him saying lines like this
- 18:51Speaker 2: cannot be my destiny is oh.
- 18:55Speaker 3: God like years old. When this came out, I can't,
- 19:02Speaker 3: I can't separate it. I'm so sorry you hard. Oh yeah,
- 19:09Speaker 3: a spoiler alert, it's me number one too. It's to
- 19:10Speaker 3: be able to pop that list for quite some fucking time.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Like I think we we we had the conceit of
- 19:15Speaker 3: doing the high score table thing and then I forgot.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, this is gonna be number one for like
- 19:20Speaker 3: one hundred years. It's just a race to number two from.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Here on out. Exactly.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I think we almost like I think we honestly need
- 19:26Speaker 1: to like do something special for this one, not let
- 19:29Speaker 1: it count. Well, we'll talk after the show, but like,
- 19:31Speaker 1: this could be this could be an issue. We're gonna
- 19:33Speaker 1: get top six just so this spot, we're talking to
- 19:36Speaker 1: people who know about evy values and trade.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I'm just two dudes, We're only two men. Fucking Oh
- 19:42Speaker 2: my god, yeah, no, I I can't stop gushing about this.
- 19:46Speaker 2: The montages is super sick power levels mewtwo very quickly,
- 19:52Speaker 2: and then we skip ahead to like, all right, that's
- 19:54Speaker 2: the villain origin. That's awesome, and then it also does
- 19:58Speaker 2: another opening phantas.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yes, Giovanni coming in. He's been set up as the
- 20:04Speaker 1: villain and we know what he is. Yeah, and just
- 20:06Speaker 1: to see him immediately like take advantage of mewtwo being like, oh,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you want to get better and you want to like
- 20:12Speaker 1: get revenge, join me, and then immediately be like, no,
- 20:17Speaker 1: I tricked you. I'm taking over. I'm in charge. You're
- 20:20Speaker 1: a Pokemon, I'm a human. The dynamic is the way
- 20:22Speaker 1: it works. Didn't you should have known that you're an idiot?
- 20:25Speaker 1: And again I'm like, like, first of all, I don't
- 20:27Speaker 1: know what's crazier the idea of Okay, I've gotten seven
- 20:30Speaker 1: of my badges. I fought a bunch of really tough Pokemon.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Let me and my team go to the last gym.
- 20:35Speaker 1: What is this weird ironclad super Pokemon I ever seen
- 20:38Speaker 1: that can one shot everything? This is confusing.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Imagine being a ten year old kid.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Me and my ryet horn are gonna make it to
- 20:46Speaker 1: the league crushed.
- 20:50Speaker 2: But I like Ganger. Ganger is my favorite Pokemon. That's
- 20:52Speaker 2: a ghost poison type, you bitch, that has nothing against mewtwo.
- 20:55Speaker 2: He's a psychic type. Learn your type beings, you idiot.
- 20:59Speaker 2: And then we transition hardcore, and I think this is
- 21:02Speaker 2: a great choice as well. Tranquil scene. It's Ash and
- 21:05Speaker 2: as friends. Now it's something familiar, you know, it's it's
- 21:08Speaker 2: it's a it's an adorable scene. Pikachu and Tokop are
- 21:11Speaker 2: the cutest save ever. Oh yeah, and might ever will
- 21:14Speaker 2: be uh an Ash does a classic Battle two the
- 21:19Speaker 2: theme song remixed as like an R and B situation.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, god, it's so good. Yeah, the music is
- 21:28Speaker 2: so good.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I mean, like it gives us the theme that if
- 21:30Speaker 1: you're a fan of the franchise you know and love,
- 21:33Speaker 1: it gives it a different bit of a swing, So
- 21:35Speaker 1: it doesn't just it feels like almost more amped up,
- 21:38Speaker 1: Like it definitely doesn't have the same power as Mortal
- 21:41Speaker 1: Kombats theme does. But as like a fan of the
- 21:44Speaker 1: cartoons at the time, it's like, oh my god. Yeah,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and then it's like, oh, but it's kind of different.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I'm yeah, yeah, even before the music kicks in, Like
- 21:53Speaker 1: something that I think gets overlooked here is let's pretend
- 21:56Speaker 1: you are coming into this movie having never watched the
- 21:59Speaker 1: cartoon for some reason. Within like the few seconds we
- 22:02Speaker 1: get of Ash, Misty and Brock, they kind of do
- 22:04Speaker 1: a good job of just giving you like, here's what
- 22:07Speaker 1: you need to know about them. Like Ash is a
- 22:09Speaker 1: little bit lazy, a little bit silly, but like Pokemon
- 22:12Speaker 1: Battles is always number one, Brock is like, let me
- 22:16Speaker 1: take care of you guys and kind of be a
- 22:17Speaker 1: little bit more of the adult. But then we also
- 22:18Speaker 1: get the moment where he's like, you know, flirting with
- 22:21Speaker 1: the projection of a woman in the little card there,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and then we kind of get Misty is kind of
- 22:27Speaker 1: like the I'm gonna nag you a little bit, like
- 22:28Speaker 1: kind of like a little bit of like annoying mom
- 22:30Speaker 1: energy mom friend, but like like still kind of part
- 22:33Speaker 1: of the banter and not as adulty as Brock is.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Yes.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Uh, And then again the music kicks in, we get
- 22:39Speaker 1: our first battle of the series.
- 22:41Speaker 2: It's a perfect opening, and we get a new Pokemon.
- 22:44Speaker 1: You're sitting here in the theater as a kid going like, yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I've played the games. I know all the Pokemon, like,
- 22:49Speaker 1: I know who you two is, I know who me
- 22:51Speaker 1: is even and then fucking Dawn fan shows up and
- 22:54Speaker 1: you're like, excuse me, what is this a new Pokemon?
- 22:59Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Uh. The anime has a recurring bit of doing this,
- 23:03Speaker 2: which absolutely to your point. It's all marketing, right. I
- 23:05Speaker 2: think Leazekin showed up in the Gen two anime like
- 23:09Speaker 2: really early on, just to be like, hey, this is
- 23:11Speaker 2: coming up. I forgot about that. Yeah yeah, because Hoo
- 23:15Speaker 2: appears in the very first episode of the anime, which
- 23:18Speaker 2: is referenced. But then Tokope is also Pokemon, which people
- 23:21Speaker 2: often forget because of the anime.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's one of those. It's one of the
- 23:24Speaker 1: things I bugged my wife. She was like, I don't
- 23:26Speaker 1: I only know the first one hundred and fifty, Like,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I don't know anything down the one fifty. I'm not
- 23:29Speaker 1: a big fan. And I'm like, your favorite Pokemon's a
- 23:31Speaker 1: Gen two Pokemon. Okay, your favorite Pokemon's Toga p Nerd.
- 23:36Speaker 2: You're married to me, your nerd? Yeah, shut up?
- 23:38Speaker 1: And then also like again, we also kind of skipped it,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I guess because neither of us.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I don't think we watched it or brought it up.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But like when this movie did air, as like most
- 23:47Speaker 1: of the movies have for the last while, there's a
- 23:50Speaker 1: little like Pikachu and Friends short before the movie.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, was it part of the theatrical lease? Because
- 23:55Speaker 2: I did not watch it as part of the theatrical lease,
- 23:56Speaker 2: I did not include it because it was included in
- 23:59Speaker 2: the VHS DVD as a short.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Prehand, Yeah, I think it played in theaters beforehand. But
- 24:04Speaker 1: it was really like, it's kind of like Pixars like
- 24:06Speaker 1: shorts before their movies, Like it's just a little thing
- 24:10Speaker 1: in place of a longer trailer for something else, but
- 24:13Speaker 1: that one also introduces I believe Merril for the first time.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Oh that's right, yes, yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Like yes, it's marketing. It's let's show you the next
- 24:20Speaker 1: toy because it's going to be coming to shelves soon.
- 24:23Speaker 1: But for world building's sake of just like letting us
- 24:27Speaker 1: understand that the world is bigger than what we know.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I think it's such a cool mechanical version of this
- 24:32Speaker 1: for sure. I think it for the hardcore fans, it's
- 24:36Speaker 1: like look at it, Dawn fan. For the newbies, it's
- 24:38Speaker 1: like Pokemon yeah, which is fine, which is cool. I
- 24:41Speaker 1: think more importantly as well, during the opening scene we
- 24:44Speaker 1: get what is succinctly a Pokemon battle. I think it
- 24:47Speaker 1: also introduces that concept super succinctly. It just goes, listen,
- 24:50Speaker 1: this is what it is, and Ash is really good
- 24:53Speaker 1: at it. That's part of this too, is this suspensively disbelief.
- 24:56Speaker 1: It's the disconnecting from the games that have much more
- 24:59Speaker 1: linear power. We're scaling and like yeah, stats and numbers
- 25:02Speaker 1: to like the anime where it is a lot more
- 25:05Speaker 1: free bawling, Like there's definitely a list of Pokemon who
- 25:08Speaker 1: like use moves they shouldn't be able to, or like
- 25:11Speaker 1: weird combinations of attacks that don't make sense.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, like again, you have like fastic note about this
- 25:18Speaker 2: in particular where you're like in the anime, I think
- 25:21Speaker 2: you say it's about your bonds, not so much the
- 25:24Speaker 2: game statistics, which I think a lot of people love
- 25:27Speaker 2: the Pokemon franchises for. We're unfortunate in the sense that
- 25:31Speaker 2: we know too much. But the regular sho is going
- 25:36Speaker 2: to be like, I love ev It's cute, uh, and
- 25:39Speaker 2: I love it and so therefore if I love it enough,
- 25:42Speaker 2: it will do well. And that's probably the appeal for
- 25:46Speaker 2: most people. Fortunately know things about like which tms came
- 25:52Speaker 2: out in which generations and what typing they are. You
- 25:55Speaker 2: know more than me. I'll put this out here. I'll
- 25:58Speaker 2: admit it. Drew has beaten me every single time. I'm uh,
- 26:00Speaker 2: we've played Pokemon.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I will say I think it was our first match
- 26:04Speaker 1: literally came down to you gotta miss and I got
- 26:06Speaker 1: a critical and that like swung the battle because had
- 26:10Speaker 1: you like yours were better. Man, there you my anime
- 26:15Speaker 1: protagonist energy took over.
- 26:16Speaker 2: The last seme. Yeah, I whip and beat my Pokemon,
- 26:18Speaker 2: and therefore.
- 26:20Speaker 1: You're putting that hardness on your Sandstrew, So.
- 26:22Speaker 2: It has to work harder. I have an electric collar
- 26:27Speaker 2: on my needle. Queens worse Pokemon to choose that makes
- 26:32Speaker 2: it sound like I'm into it.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Choose a different one, but also putting an electric collar
- 26:37Speaker 1: on a ground type Pokemon. Didn't you just discuss this,
- 26:41Speaker 1: although according to this movie it might be a water
- 26:43Speaker 1: type all right?
- 26:44Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah. Another thing that that comes up is I
- 26:49Speaker 2: think this is the introduction of Delivery Dragon Knight, which
- 26:52Speaker 2: for the fans is like a weird little trop dragon
- 26:55Speaker 2: knightes just love sending mail.
- 26:57Speaker 1: But on top of being introduced in Delivery dragon Kite,
- 26:59Speaker 1: who's become kind of a like staple of the franchise,
- 27:01Speaker 1: is cute little like icon, we also get our theatrical
- 27:05Speaker 1: premiere of Team Rocket.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Yeah, would you you love? I also love They're great assigns. Yeah.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I think they were more annoying in the anime. Here
- 27:14Speaker 2: they do a great job of being both comedic foil
- 27:18Speaker 2: and the audience they're just like, hey, what's this that's
- 27:21Speaker 2: going on?
- 27:22Speaker 1: They really kind of act as that like audience stand
- 27:24Speaker 1: in of like I don't know what's happening. Let's exposition
- 27:27Speaker 1: it without being as blunt as it could be. I
- 27:30Speaker 1: guess yeah, and again, I genuinely I think even in
- 27:33Speaker 1: the anime when they were annoying, there was kind of
- 27:35Speaker 1: a charm to them. Like I think people of Joe
- 27:37Speaker 1: tell like sure, like they were drag queens for kids
- 27:40Speaker 1: before we had drag queens. Like every time they dress up,
- 27:44Speaker 1: they always gender swopt it. It was like, I mean,
- 27:46Speaker 1: you clearly had the male outfit and the female euffit
- 27:48Speaker 1: you opted to switch, Like, I'm fully on board with it,
- 27:52Speaker 1: but like you knew what you were doing queens.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I yeah, Unfortunately, I'm a I'm a boring sis straight male.
- 27:59Speaker 2: But I imagine for like the LGBT community, there's been
- 28:01Speaker 2: a bunch of interpretations for Jesse and James, like are
- 28:04Speaker 2: they a couple? Are they not? Either way, it's like, oh,
- 28:08Speaker 2: they're just two people who don't fit the gender or
- 28:13Speaker 2: sexual norms who have a relationship of some sort with
- 28:15Speaker 2: each other, and that's awesome, and people really clung onto that.
- 28:21Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah, they were like, like I genuinely think I did
- 28:25Speaker 1: at some point go back and watch that like last
- 28:27Speaker 1: two or three episodes of the anime where they actually
- 28:30Speaker 1: fully like retired Ash as a character. Yeah, but like
- 28:33Speaker 1: I remember even Team Rawckett has a really adorable send
- 28:36Speaker 1: off and like a very heartfelt goodbye with him of
- 28:38Speaker 1: like because they also left the show effectively, so they
- 28:42Speaker 1: also got there goodbye, but they did all the cute terms.
- 28:44Speaker 1: And I'm like, I kind of love this because, like,
- 28:46Speaker 1: as much as they were the antagonists in the cartoon,
- 28:48Speaker 1: for the most part, they were like when like it
- 28:50Speaker 1: really push came to shove, they kind of knew to
- 28:52Speaker 1: be on the right side of things, Like they were
- 28:54Speaker 1: ultimately good guys, just like forced to do evil because
- 28:57Speaker 1: it was the only job they could get kind of thing.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Yes, yes, oh they were, Yeah, they were. They were
- 29:02Speaker 2: a great uh supporting cast and they're really really great
- 29:05Speaker 2: in this. There's a scene later where they dresses Vikings
- 29:09Speaker 2: to pick friends up, which, looking as an adult, You're like,
- 29:15Speaker 2: that's ridiculous and how did these kids trust them? But
- 29:17Speaker 2: also knowing the Pokemon world, you're like, no, people, people
- 29:21Speaker 2: Vikings could exist for sure. Yeah, it's just a Pokemon
- 29:24Speaker 2: trainer archetype like it happens, you know. Oh yeah.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I think the more important part is the fact that
- 29:29Speaker 1: Ashton makes a joke about most Vikings still being from Minnesota,
- 29:32Speaker 1: and it's like, as a child, totally obviously missed that joke.
- 29:37Speaker 1: As an adult, I only know that it's a reference
- 29:39Speaker 1: to a sports team. I couldn't even tell you what
- 29:41Speaker 1: sport the Minnesota Vikings. I think it's football.
- 29:46Speaker 2: You're adorable, and I'm not the person to ask.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Good point, But also like, so is it canon that
- 29:54Speaker 1: like Minnesota exists in the Pokemon world.
- 29:56Speaker 2: That's a great Yeah, that's that's where all the tour are. Honestly,
- 30:03Speaker 2: is that is that the cheese place? Or is that Wisconsin?
- 30:05Speaker 2: I also don't know, Oh wait, I don't.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I think I think both get pretty closely related to cheese.
- 30:11Speaker 1: But just get those like those provinces in the in
- 30:14Speaker 1: the that like border Canada kind of thing.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Get like a cheese rep. Both have strong affiliations with
- 30:19Speaker 2: the product cheese. Yes, there you go, milk tanks such
- 30:22Speaker 2: and such.
- 30:23Speaker 1: There you go, There you go. There's a there's a
- 30:26Speaker 1: fan favorite Pokemon right there. I think nothing's a meme
- 30:30Speaker 1: Pokemon if there ever was one.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you're your fan favorite, not my fan favorite.
- 30:35Speaker 1: I do love me a good glass of milk.
- 30:36Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie. I'm one of those weirdos. She
- 30:38Speaker 2: drinks milk.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Regularly like a normal person. Read from that what you will.
- 30:45Speaker 1: So there is a point here, obviously, So we finally
- 30:47Speaker 1: do get introduced to me you for a little bit
- 30:49Speaker 1: here just the cutest thing to ever exist, Like you
- 30:55Speaker 1: literally said, how do we make the cutest Pokemon ever
- 30:58Speaker 1: as the like antagonist to this movie villain? And they
- 31:01Speaker 1: succeeded tenfold? Like I would commit war crimes for me
- 31:05Speaker 1: if he asked me to.
- 31:06Speaker 2: You do love? You do love a pink Pokemon as well,
- 31:08Speaker 2: So I one hundred percent I think that you would
- 31:12Speaker 2: and are not joking. Yeah, the Pokemon are the cutest again, Toko,
- 31:16Speaker 2: p Pikachu, and Mew are some of the cutest Pokemon
- 31:20Speaker 2: has ever been, which is an awesome just position because
- 31:22Speaker 2: you have a Pokemon has fully committed to genocide, like
- 31:25Speaker 2: he's he's ready, he's that's his entire plan. There's no
- 31:29Speaker 2: subtlety to it at all. So I love that juxtaposition,
- 31:32Speaker 2: and it's a great when they have their conversation later
- 31:35Speaker 2: and it's mewtwo like, So what you're saying is because
- 31:39Speaker 2: it is.
- 31:40Speaker 1: It's the deep philosophical human voice. I understand the power
- 31:46Speaker 1: of life and destiny.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there's like articulated tones where it's like mew
- 31:53Speaker 2: me me, me, me me.
- 31:55Speaker 1: And you're like, you know, I never thought about that
- 31:57Speaker 1: with pi Aristo, I Love even MEA does it later
- 32:01Speaker 1: in the movie too, with the Cloneia who can't speak,
- 32:04Speaker 1: which is the meowing and the oh yeah I agree
- 32:06Speaker 1: with let me repeat what you just said for the audience.
- 32:08Speaker 2: It's the perfectly because it's not played for comedy. It's
- 32:11Speaker 2: very clear, but it's it's exactly what this movie does
- 32:14Speaker 2: right where it's goes, no, this is incere. Uh, these
- 32:18Speaker 2: two Pokemon are having a conversation. It's absolutely sincere, and
- 32:22Speaker 2: one is fucking adorable and the other one is just
- 32:25Speaker 2: translating so that we understand what's going on. But it's
- 32:28Speaker 2: a it's a deep because me is the first Pokemon?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Is that lore? That's its classification? Yeah, it's I mean
- 32:35Speaker 2: that's one of those jokes you always see, is like,
- 32:36Speaker 2: who's really the first Pokemon? Is it? You both? It's like, well,
- 32:41Speaker 2: technically yeah, right, and so conceivably it is a god.
- 32:45Speaker 2: It has lived for eons or millennia or whatever, so
- 32:48Speaker 2: it probably is super wise. Oh yeah, just also adorable,
- 32:54Speaker 2: Like it never really.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Hit me till right, now. But like the idea of
- 32:56Speaker 1: having one of the most like up to this point,
- 32:59Speaker 1: the most like villainous, heinous, powerful, bad ass Pokemon being
- 33:04Speaker 1: rivaled by something that is obstensibly the cutest little plush
- 33:08Speaker 1: companion ever and they are on equal footing, I think
- 33:11Speaker 1: is so emblematic of this franchise of like it was just.
- 33:14Speaker 2: About to say the same welcome to Pokemon, where Oddish
- 33:19Speaker 2: and Agaron are on the same wavelength. There is no right,
- 33:23Speaker 2: there is no wrong. You can have a buzz swool
- 33:26Speaker 2: and you could have a peach you or a Klepha.
- 33:29Speaker 2: That's one I've never I'm not named yet.
- 33:31Speaker 1: It's awesome. It's the state exactly. I also do want
- 33:35Speaker 1: to mention before we get past this little opening segment
- 33:37Speaker 1: because I think we're gonna move on to the island
- 33:38Speaker 1: soon and talk about everything there. It never occurred to
- 33:41Speaker 1: me again trying to like pay a little more attention
- 33:45Speaker 1: to this movie, thinking like, I know I've seen that
- 33:46Speaker 1: a thousand times, like you have. Right when the harbor
- 33:49Speaker 1: gets shut down and the harbor Master, who's like again
- 33:51Speaker 1: it's like badass women. We get like two scenes of
- 33:53Speaker 1: and she's like super well voice acted. Yes, tells the
- 33:57Speaker 1: legend of the storm that like nearly wiped out the
- 34:00Speaker 1: world in all humanity, and it was the tears of
- 34:02Speaker 1: Pokemon that like save the land. We legit get foreshadowing
- 34:07Speaker 1: to the tears Seed at.
- 34:08Speaker 2: The end of the movie. I'll be honest with you,
- 34:10Speaker 2: and this is this is the level of intelligence that
- 34:12Speaker 2: Jason works at. I saw your note. I watched this
- 34:15Speaker 2: as an adult. I still ignored her because that's a
- 34:19Speaker 2: As a kid, every time she was on the TV,
- 34:21Speaker 2: I was like, SNAr, skip fast forward.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I mean, that's exactly the point.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Though.
- 34:26Speaker 1: It's like it's again like this movie was made for kids.
- 34:29Speaker 1: So the fun part is the Pokemon battles is the
- 34:31Speaker 1: adventure is like the action scenes. Yeah, they're like having
- 34:35Speaker 1: these little moments like the conversation with the mouth and
- 34:38Speaker 1: the clone meuth. It's like just as impactful as me
- 34:41Speaker 1: and you who's conversation. By that point, As a kid,
- 34:44Speaker 1: you're kind of like, hey, like we got through the action.
- 34:46Speaker 1: I want to get to the resolution now. Yeah, it's cool.
- 34:49Speaker 1: This is banter. I can skip almost.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Because I'll be honest, like, it is cool. It is foreshadowing.
- 34:55Speaker 2: It's it's nice to add gravitas to this world and
- 34:59Speaker 2: what the events is currently happening. If you also cut
- 35:02Speaker 2: it out of the movie, I don't think it gets
- 35:03Speaker 2: affected by any means.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I could see a world where like if
- 35:07Speaker 1: they wanted to like quickly put this on TV as
- 35:09Speaker 1: got made for TV movie and like cut down for
- 35:11Speaker 1: more ad time, you could remove those little chunks and
- 35:14Speaker 1: just have like the big blockbuster beats for kids, and
- 35:17Speaker 1: like they would still enjoy it and it would still
- 35:19Speaker 1: mostly make sense without some of the like deeper contacts
- 35:22Speaker 1: and meaning and like learning.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Yeah, speaking of action sequences, right after this follows an
- 35:28Speaker 2: action sequence where they get picked up by the Vikings.
- 35:32Speaker 2: It's a storm. They have to get to the island, right,
- 35:35Speaker 2: And as an adult, I feel for these children. I'm like,
- 35:38Speaker 2: this is dangerous. Don't do that. That's crazy. Yeah, But
- 35:42Speaker 2: also there's this line where when they finally do make
- 35:45Speaker 2: it to the island, Nurse Joy spoiler alert, the attendant
- 35:49Speaker 2: for the island as it were. She says, only the
- 35:52Speaker 2: trainers capable of braving this storm were able to make it.
- 35:56Speaker 2: And then brocos, do you mean that storm with some
- 35:58Speaker 2: kind of test? And I was like, no, I think
- 36:00Speaker 2: those people died is what I think kids died, dude.
- 36:06Speaker 2: I think I think trainers attempted it, didn't make it,
- 36:08Speaker 2: and they're just dead.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I just yeah, I mean, like I really right now.
- 36:14Speaker 1: My thought was always like, oh, they just didn't try
- 36:16Speaker 1: to cross, so they were too chicken. Sure, and anyone
- 36:19Speaker 1: who tried seemingly made it. But yeah, there's I never
- 36:22Speaker 1: loved it. There's probably people who tried and did not
- 36:24Speaker 1: make it.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Not every once in ash sometimes you black out in
- 36:29Speaker 2: or sorry they call it white out, yes, and you
- 36:31Speaker 2: get magically put to the Pokemon thing. But if mewtwo
- 36:35Speaker 2: can commit murder to humans, I think kids totally died
- 36:37Speaker 2: in this storm. That's my Yeah.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I mean he made the storm, the storm he like
- 36:41Speaker 1: he Brock was right, it was a test. It was
- 36:43Speaker 1: to only get the best trainers there, which again, like
- 36:45Speaker 1: I don't, I guess he wanted like only the best
- 36:47Speaker 1: Pokemon to clone kind of thing was his logic, but like, sure,
- 36:50Speaker 1: I would have just lett more people come, like more
- 36:52Speaker 1: Pokemon for me to clone, and if they're not perfect Pokemon,
- 36:55Speaker 1: they're still my clones that I could like you're taking
- 36:57Speaker 1: to the future with me, But okay.
- 36:59Speaker 2: But then you also don't on that like a youngster Joey,
- 37:01Speaker 2: what is he gonna do is swim on a ratita?
- 37:04Speaker 2: What an idiot? Hey would that?
- 37:07Speaker 1: Those radia stats, it probably could.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Have made it maybe e Radicate, but no.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I feel like Eradicate could learn surf in the original game,
- 37:17Speaker 1: so technically it would be possible.
- 37:19Speaker 2: This is the part where we get too much stemantics
- 37:22Speaker 2: and we use it's like could I google this or
- 37:24Speaker 2: can this? When we lose our audience because we're nerds,
- 37:29Speaker 2: this is brutal.
- 37:30Speaker 1: And this is also where like I will say, like,
- 37:31Speaker 1: let's actually tangent off that to the nerd side of things.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Is the movie much like the anime in the past.
- 37:36Speaker 1: It's like it's not perfect, like there's clearly discrepancies beyond,
- 37:39Speaker 1: just like things that don't always make sense, like oh,
- 37:41Speaker 1: there is the trainer who gets to the island and
- 37:43Speaker 1: goes like, yeah, of course I made it. All My
- 37:45Speaker 1: pokemon are water type pokemon. And we see his gold
- 37:48Speaker 1: duck as they poorion, his geara dose and his needle queen.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Yeah she's blue. Okay.
- 37:53Speaker 1: It's like like I'm wondering. It's always like the is
- 37:56Speaker 1: this just like a mistake by the people who made
- 37:58Speaker 1: the movie, and they threw a line in not realizing
- 37:59Speaker 1: it or is this kid actually that bad but somehow
- 38:02Speaker 1: that good as a trainer. This needle Queen is just like, yeah,
- 38:05Speaker 1: I'm totally a watertime check out these water moves.
- 38:08Speaker 2: I can use earthquake.
- 38:11Speaker 1: And I was just saying that I do know for
- 38:13Speaker 1: fact because my needle Queen was was my surf bitch
- 38:15Speaker 1: for a while.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Oh oh god, I only know that because of Pokemon Stadium.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Oh my god. Yes, you're absolutely right. There's another mistake
- 38:23Speaker 2: where they have a who's that Pokemon? As a reference
- 38:27Speaker 2: anime they have I think you had a note of it.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Yeah, they show cytherer and they say Alexas And again,
- 38:33Speaker 1: this might just be Team Rocket not being that good
- 38:36Speaker 1: at knowing their stuff because which is canonically they're pretty silly. Yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 1: so I kind of like probably a mistake from like
- 38:43Speaker 1: the production side of things, but like in universe, I
- 38:45Speaker 1: totally buy that.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Yes, yes, And then here's like from here on now,
- 38:49Speaker 2: I mean, the movie's been kind of serious, but it's
- 38:51Speaker 2: laid out some groundwork, et cetera, et cetera. But here
- 38:53Speaker 2: on now it plays almost like a horror film in elements.
- 38:58Speaker 2: It's really serious. It's the I would say. It gets
- 39:01Speaker 2: into the third act essentially of like setting up this island,
- 39:04Speaker 2: mewtwo is revealed as our antagonist to the protagonist. There's
- 39:10Speaker 2: a segment where one of the trainers finds out that
- 39:12Speaker 2: the greatest Pokemon Master is a Pokemon and he goes,
- 39:15Speaker 2: a Pokemon can't be a Pokemon Master, no way, which
- 39:18Speaker 2: feels very racially charged, which I guess is the point.
- 39:23Speaker 2: It feels weird when he says it. But then also
- 39:26Speaker 2: I'm like, but actually, in real life, if you saw
- 39:30Speaker 2: a horse be a cowboy, you'd also be like, fuck,
- 39:33Speaker 2: is that what's going on there, Bud? Or if you
- 39:35Speaker 2: saw like a dog walking dogs, he'd be like, that's
- 39:38Speaker 2: not right. I'm gonna call that out.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Like, but then on the other side of things, I
- 39:42Speaker 1: think of like sheep hurting dogs is based on mew
- 39:44Speaker 1: two is doing here.
- 39:45Speaker 2: He is just one.
- 39:46Speaker 1: He has a slightly more powerful species of like mammals
- 39:50Speaker 1: like hurting other smaller mammals that he has, like it's
- 39:53Speaker 1: the human animal divide. It becomes the bigger issue of
- 39:56Speaker 1: like picturing a like horse on its hind legs with
- 39:58Speaker 1: a cowboy hat, and like, and I'm like, yeah, that
- 40:01Speaker 1: is one a D and D character i'd play, but
- 40:03Speaker 1: two scary as fuck, right, one of those things that
- 40:13Speaker 1: like as a child, legitimately creeped me out, and like
- 40:16Speaker 1: even going back to it, it doesn't creep me out
- 40:18Speaker 1: as much anymore, but like it reminds me of the
- 40:21Speaker 1: feeling I had as a child, is when the clones
- 40:24Speaker 1: first all just the whole tube system being like weirdly
- 40:26Speaker 1: malleable and like squishy and almost flesh like I feel,
- 40:31Speaker 1: and the very vibes, yes, and like the whole machine
- 40:35Speaker 1: is like dark basement, these giant tubes that seems very creepy.
- 40:40Speaker 1: And the way they like melt out of the bases.
- 40:42Speaker 1: It's not like it opens and they walk out it
- 40:44Speaker 1: literally like they like melt out of it like some
- 40:47Speaker 1: sort of weird monster in a like a mutant like
- 40:49Speaker 1: body horror movie. And it's like, yes, that was it
- 40:52Speaker 1: just added to the creepy element of these clone Pokemon.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I'm honestly super glad that you made a note about this, because,
- 40:57Speaker 2: putting on my adult hat here trying to analyze it,
- 41:01Speaker 2: I think it's a great juxtaposition. It could be the
- 41:03Speaker 2: intention of the film, it could not be. But I
- 41:06Speaker 2: think the point of it is is that mew two
- 41:09Speaker 2: has taken on this role of I will clone pokemon
- 41:12Speaker 2: who will do my bidding, but they are genetically superior
- 41:16Speaker 2: in your inferior Pokemon who have chosen to do your bidding.
- 41:20Speaker 2: He was also in attest tube and he broke free
- 41:23Speaker 2: his like like his ascension into the world was very violent,
- 41:28Speaker 2: whereas when they're berthed and it's very like it feels
- 41:32Speaker 2: very organic, right They Yeah, they're almost berved out of
- 41:37Speaker 2: these tubes. It's not a breaking of glass or anything
- 41:39Speaker 2: like that. Their immediate response is to then just fight
- 41:43Speaker 2: and go get their master. So I think it's a
- 41:47Speaker 2: good juxtaposition of like mewtwo fought and a free will
- 41:50Speaker 2: broke out of his tube, whereas these Pokemon had no
- 41:54Speaker 2: free will and were berved into life under enslavement and period.
- 41:58Speaker 2: And there's like this creepy slow tone and there's suspense
- 42:03Speaker 2: in it and they just let it ride. And I
- 42:05Speaker 2: think that's so cool because I think it says what
- 42:08Speaker 2: like the absolute irony of mew two is that he
- 42:10Speaker 2: thinks he's better. He's honestly not only his oppressors, he's worse,
- 42:15Speaker 2: he's making a life for these Pokemon who had no choice,
- 42:19Speaker 2: even if they are genetically superior. So I I loved
- 42:23Speaker 2: your note on that, and it made me think a
- 42:24Speaker 2: little bit harder about that scene.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think that's like the nice thing with
- 42:27Speaker 1: this movie is like there is room to read into it.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Like I think there's always the like, oh, you can
- 42:33Speaker 1: read too much into something, or you're like you're putting
- 42:36Speaker 1: your ideas on things that aren't actually there, which one
- 42:38Speaker 1: I think is very important to do in media because
- 42:40Speaker 1: even if it wasn't the intent of the creator, the
- 42:42Speaker 1: ability to see something in a creation is you as
- 42:45Speaker 1: the viewers, right. Yeah, And the fact that this movie
- 42:48Speaker 1: does have these moments where like, yeah, there's this great juxtaposition,
- 42:52Speaker 1: as you've said, like of having mewtwo who thinks that
- 42:55Speaker 1: you know, like the fact that humans enslaved Pokemon is
- 42:57Speaker 1: the problem. That's why he needs to rewrite the world.
- 42:59Speaker 1: But he's just sort of doing the same thing, but
- 43:02Speaker 1: because he's doing it in a different way, he thinks
- 43:04Speaker 1: he's right. It's it is a really good, like eye
- 43:07Speaker 1: opening scene that really like on a rewatch like this
- 43:10Speaker 1: as an adult or past rewatches as an adult has
- 43:13Speaker 1: stood out to me.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and it doesn't need to go that hard. It
- 43:16Speaker 2: really truly didn't need to think about it that hard,
- 43:19Speaker 2: if that was the intention or not. Ultimately there's like
- 43:22Speaker 2: very clearly there's irony and need too finds that out
- 43:25Speaker 2: through Catharsis later, but yeah, it's it takes itself seriously, Yes,
- 43:30Speaker 2: says this is just because it is about Chicka Retas
- 43:34Speaker 2: and and klferis. We don't have to be dumb about it.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Like you said before, like there are scenes that probably
- 43:41Speaker 1: could have been cut from the movie that like are
- 43:43Speaker 1: only there to add to the atmosphere and the feeling,
- 43:45Speaker 1: Like had the scene just been like mut and this
- 43:48Speaker 1: is where does speak the line that he also was
- 43:50Speaker 1: raised with the three or other starters, it kind of
- 43:52Speaker 1: becomes a throwaway line until you realize the missing chunk
- 43:54Speaker 1: from the Japanese intro of the movie, Right, but how
- 43:57Speaker 1: you just said that? And then the door opened up
- 43:59Speaker 1: and the three of them walked out with like their
- 44:01Speaker 1: weird markings to show that they're different. The movie would
- 44:04Speaker 1: have done the same thing, but we get that extra
- 44:06Speaker 1: moment of seeing them in these cloning tanks, seeing them
- 44:09Speaker 1: like come out and go to their master. Yeah, like
- 44:12Speaker 1: the ads to it in a very like eerie way.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Honestly, all the exposition that the Team Rocket does,
- 44:18Speaker 2: the kind of live commentary of it all isn't necessary.
- 44:22Speaker 2: It adds because it's a kid's movie and you have
- 44:24Speaker 2: to dumb that down a bit. But had you cut
- 44:26Speaker 2: out that those lines, you still get what the story
- 44:29Speaker 2: beats are. Yeah, just from the visuals of that and stuff.
- 44:33Speaker 2: So that's that's really good. I mean, from here on
- 44:34Speaker 2: out again, it just it just rams up. There's this
- 44:37Speaker 2: moment where all the Pikacha, all the Pokemon, I almost
- 44:40Speaker 2: did my mom where I'm like, all the Pokemon are
- 44:45Speaker 2: being abducted and man, even as an adult, there's a
- 44:48Speaker 2: scene where Pikachu specifically is being du ash is just
- 44:53Speaker 2: he does all his best. He's using his body to
- 44:56Speaker 2: protect this Pokemon. Pikachu's the voice actress on Pigachu is absurd,
- 45:02Speaker 2: man like oh panting the exasperation as each like lightning
- 45:07Speaker 2: Bulk gets weaker and weaker. It is heart wrenching. It's horrifying, dude, wholeheartedly.
- 45:13Speaker 1: One of the most amazing action scenes of this movie
- 45:15Speaker 1: is just that Pikachu running away. Yeah, but you're right,
- 45:18Speaker 1: it's the voice acting. Being able to express so much
- 45:21Speaker 1: through just the little sounds of Pikachu can make Yeah,
- 45:24Speaker 1: just the peakas and the chews and being able to
- 45:26Speaker 1: emote so much. That's why I felt like some voice
- 45:29Speaker 1: actors who are so well known for doing their like
- 45:31Speaker 1: sounds of other animals or creatures, are just so impressive
- 45:35Speaker 1: because like, you can get so much across in just
- 45:37Speaker 1: like noises. It's amazing work. They got to do more
- 45:41Speaker 1: of less.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you know more about that world, but I totally agree.
- 45:45Speaker 2: It's fascinating and it's on inspiring and it adds to
- 45:49Speaker 2: the atmosphere of a movie, which is what it's supposed
- 45:51Speaker 2: to do. The third act of this film, I legitimately
- 45:55Speaker 2: think is one of the best third act action sequences
- 45:59Speaker 2: of all time, which sounds crazy coming from Pokemon, the
- 46:02Speaker 2: first movie I'm not a big fan of. The third
- 46:05Speaker 2: act is just in action sequence. There's a couple of
- 46:07Speaker 2: movies that have burnt that out for me, Matrix the Revolution,
- 46:10Speaker 2: the third one is one of those where it's just like,
- 46:12Speaker 2: oh my god, this is forever long. This has nothing
- 46:15Speaker 2: to do with anything. This one it has everything to
- 46:19Speaker 2: do with everything. It's like you're just watching Pokemon duke
- 46:22Speaker 2: it out with their duplicates. They're exasperated. In a similar sense,
- 46:26Speaker 2: it's the music just goes fucking hard for no reason, dude,
- 46:30Speaker 2: it's so emotional. There is one line though, that as
- 46:34Speaker 2: I was writing that note, I heard it and I went,
- 46:36Speaker 2: that just broke the entire conceit of this movie. Yep.
- 46:39Speaker 1: So I'm pretty sure referring to the line that Nurse
- 46:41Speaker 1: Joy says, the Pokemon aren't meant to fight, not like this,
- 46:46Speaker 1: not like this. Wait, we want them to fight, and
- 46:52Speaker 1: that's I think. So I will say, like as much
- 46:54Speaker 1: as I I will attempt to defend this line a
- 46:56Speaker 1: little bit and I'll get that, I will oh right
- 46:59Speaker 1: away say, like in the Ultimate Judgment, like, you're right,
- 47:02Speaker 1: the lesson this movie is trying to teach, like, while
- 47:04Speaker 1: it also has like mewtwo's whole understanding and learning and
- 47:07Speaker 1: growing and like, yeah, we're promoting the bonds of people
- 47:10Speaker 1: in Pokemon and people making their own choices and like
- 47:12Speaker 1: how you use your life and making your own destiny
- 47:15Speaker 1: and all very right, right, the fact that they try
- 47:17Speaker 1: to do that by showing us fighting is bad in
- 47:21Speaker 1: a franchise that basically lives and dies on Pokemon fighting
- 47:25Speaker 1: each other is is a miss?
- 47:28Speaker 2: Like it really is a miss. Oh dude, I practice
- 47:31Speaker 2: eugenics when I play these games. We both do to
- 47:36Speaker 2: fucking line.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Oh god, the amount of fucking Pokemon IVY release because
- 47:40Speaker 1: they only had five perfect ivs and not all six.
- 47:44Speaker 1: I like to imagine, like in the fiction of the games,
- 47:46Speaker 1: the number of like whatever Pokemon that one trainer's shiny
- 47:49Speaker 1: hunting and there's just an influx of them running around
- 47:52Speaker 1: the countryside, Like why are there thirty thousand totop in
- 47:56Speaker 1: my backyard?
- 47:57Speaker 4: Sir?
- 47:57Speaker 2: That's why Professor hokus to take care of thirty toros.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Ash was just like, dude, it keeps having a lax personality.
- 48:06Speaker 1: Meets me Adam in bro up to tack Low special
- 48:09Speaker 1: attack man.
- 48:11Speaker 2: He's like, please, Ash, my food bills are so high.
- 48:15Speaker 1: So this is where the line I mentioned earlier that
- 48:17Speaker 1: I kind of want to go back to is yes,
- 48:19Speaker 1: and I think that's where And it's hard to make
- 48:21Speaker 1: a real world comparison. The best I come up with is,
- 48:23Speaker 1: like is pro sports. It's like, yes, if bear with me,
- 48:28Speaker 1: and I'm not a sports guy, I know, but like
- 48:31Speaker 1: you watch football players run into each other, hit each
- 48:33Speaker 1: other like play and like it's a game. They are
- 48:36Speaker 1: doing this. Yes, they're getting paid, Yes they have the fame.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Yes there's all the reasons to do it, but they're
- 48:41Speaker 1: not doing it because I hate the other physical person
- 48:45Speaker 1: and need them to suffer.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Whereas this goes from Pokemon. We even see it when
- 48:50Speaker 1: Pokemon get knocked out, they get the swirly eyes, they
- 48:52Speaker 1: fall over, and then they come back and they're fine,
- 48:54Speaker 1: and like I I've seen its, like I've seen like
- 48:57Speaker 1: the theories before, like explaining how like oh, when they're
- 48:59Speaker 1: using their moves, like yes, it's causing them like tiredness,
- 49:02Speaker 1: but it's not causing them physical pain or harm the
- 49:05Speaker 1: way we think of like fighting soecuted, I don't give
- 49:09Speaker 1: a shit that hurts, But that's like things like you
- 49:12Speaker 1: never see a Pokemon like get electrocuted and be like
- 49:14Speaker 1: I can't like like the way you will, like if
- 49:16Speaker 1: you electrocuted you or I and you'd be like what
- 49:18Speaker 1: the fuck this has to be done now?
- 49:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think like Carmander that has like lasting brain
- 49:23Speaker 2: damage and you're like, ooh, that's that's brutal. Yeah, Like
- 49:28Speaker 2: famously the old episode where Ash gets his Charmander and
- 49:31Speaker 2: like if the fire goes out, it'll die.
- 49:34Speaker 1: But like we've seen charas Ar, Charmelion Charmander get hit
- 49:36Speaker 1: with water attacks a dozen times. But because it's in
- 49:39Speaker 1: this combat where whether it's like yes, there is a
- 49:43Speaker 1: limit to how much they can handle before they get
- 49:45Speaker 1: too tired and faint, it's never doing lasting damage to
- 49:48Speaker 1: them in a sense.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Mm hm.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Like you never see post combat going to a gym
- 49:53Speaker 1: with like a Pokemon, like literally on the verge of death.
- 49:55Speaker 1: It's just ohould fainted, heal it real quick. The Tarmander
- 49:57Speaker 1: in the rain was like it needs a medical attention now,
- 50:00Speaker 1: yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, no, absolutely right. Yeah, it's a
- 50:03Speaker 1: good defense. That's it. And I think the while I
- 50:06Speaker 1: disagree with the point I am making, I think it
- 50:08Speaker 1: is ultimately a stupid like differentiation to make. I think
- 50:12Speaker 1: what they're trying to go for here is because me
- 50:14Speaker 1: two like turned off their powers. They're just fighting for
- 50:17Speaker 1: fighting sake. R. It's it's why they are actually getting
- 50:20Speaker 1: tired so quickly, why they are like injured, like like
- 50:23Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Like great point, Like you see the Pikachu,
- 50:26Speaker 1: like the Pikachu fight where it's just like I'm slapping
- 50:28Speaker 1: you like a dozen or so times and like, y, yeah,
- 50:31Speaker 1: Pikachu's getting hurt and suffering, but the other clone is
- 50:33Speaker 1: getting super tired and exhausted because it's not using its abilities.
- 50:36Speaker 1: It's physically exerting itself in a way that it doesn't
- 50:38Speaker 1: have to fight normally.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, it's okay. True, we're not on pandemonium.
- 50:43Speaker 2: This isn't this is this is We're not on trial.
- 50:47Speaker 2: It's okay. But in the end, you are right.
- 50:49Speaker 1: I think the the conceit of this film being like
- 50:51Speaker 1: fighting is wrong in a sense, and then to immediately
- 50:54Speaker 1: go back to well, back to fighting is like, yeah,
- 50:59Speaker 1: like that is that is my only brekface movie is like, well,
- 51:02Speaker 1: I can explain it away from my own sanity. It's
- 51:05Speaker 1: clearly stupid.
- 51:08Speaker 2: And then the very final thing I think I'll say
- 51:10Speaker 2: about the movie and to critique or make a note
- 51:12Speaker 2: of is the end scene. It's kind of a flip
- 51:15Speaker 2: that the animal, the pet, does not make a sacrifice
- 51:17Speaker 2: for its master. The master makes a sacrifice, and it's
- 51:21Speaker 2: heart wrenching. Dude, Like again, as well as a kid,
- 51:23Speaker 2: it was always heart wrenching as an adult, it's still
- 51:25Speaker 2: heart wrenching, like listening to Pikachu with all the emotions
- 51:30Speaker 2: you can with a Buika like lot, like grieve in
- 51:34Speaker 2: denial over its owner, its friend, and then everyone's tears
- 51:39Speaker 2: gather despite in this world like a chancey could have
- 51:43Speaker 2: been an easy fix. Seriously, yeah, if you two has
- 51:49Speaker 2: crazy psychic powers, this could have been fine. Oh yeah,
- 51:53Speaker 2: so cheesy, But watching it in itself and experiencing it,
- 51:57Speaker 2: I give it a pass.
- 51:58Speaker 1: It's beautiful, like it's it's a it's it's it's it's
- 52:02Speaker 1: that thing where it's it's so cheesy, but like you
- 52:05Speaker 1: could picture yourself as a child with your starter Pokemon
- 52:08Speaker 1: from Pokemon Red or Blue and like seeing them suffer
- 52:11Speaker 1: and throwing yourself in the way to save them and
- 52:13Speaker 1: the them grieving you. Like you know that's real because
- 52:16Speaker 1: you felt that with your first Pokemon for.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Sure, Dude, Like I I leveled up that charge so
- 52:22Speaker 2: hard that it was my only guy. It just it
- 52:24Speaker 2: just soloed everything.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we've we've all, we've all been to like
- 52:29Speaker 1: final final Champion Lands of Lead four fights and like
- 52:33Speaker 1: my charge are Gent'll just take down most of your ship, man,
- 52:35Speaker 1: Like I'm sorry, dude, I know you've got three Dragon Knights,
- 52:38Speaker 1: all of them have illegal moves because they're leveling.
- 52:41Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna wreck you, buddy. Yeah, this thing's
- 52:44Speaker 2: a level one hundred. I've only yes.
- 52:47Speaker 1: But also just one of those moments I never really
- 52:49Speaker 1: clicked until today. We'll rewatch in this the other day.
- 52:52Speaker 1: He's at the end of the movie, togoy pomps out
- 52:54Speaker 1: of the bag like you've just been asleep in Missy's
- 52:56Speaker 1: bag in this entire movie. Didn't get abducted by mew
- 52:59Speaker 1: Two's like weird ball things like this new Tobe not
- 53:01Speaker 1: know about. Yeah, he's like, that's not a Pokemon.
- 53:05Speaker 2: I'm a Jen Wonner. Don't have to get game data
- 53:08Speaker 2: for that.
- 53:08Speaker 5: No.
- 53:08Speaker 2: Sorry, it's just a baby. What are you gonna do?
- 53:11Speaker 4: You know?
- 53:12Speaker 2: I also love because I actually one of the episodes
- 53:15Speaker 2: I had on VHS was Tokeyp's burthing. I do love
- 53:18Speaker 2: that the convention that they just went you can't say
- 53:20Speaker 2: tocop all the time, so it just sits there and
- 53:22Speaker 2: goes pre pre like it's so cute. It's it's it
- 53:25Speaker 2: is it is again.
- 53:26Speaker 1: It is one of those like they knew what they
- 53:28Speaker 1: were doing with some of these Pokemon designs, like we
- 53:30Speaker 1: just want like something stupidly cute to hatch from this egg. Yeah,
- 53:33Speaker 1: and the fact that, like of all the Pokemon, it
- 53:35Speaker 1: uses part of his egg, like it's it's so damn cute.
- 53:38Speaker 2: It's oh. One of my favorite gifts I've ever received
- 53:41Speaker 2: is a Pokemon egg pin in the style of Tokope,
- 53:45Speaker 2: which you can get at Boxless Pins uh ooh dot
- 53:50Speaker 2: com slash boxless Pins. I believe, Oh, thank you.
- 53:53Speaker 1: I kind of omitted the fun facts because I realized
- 53:55Speaker 1: the only real big one I had was the stuff
- 53:58Speaker 1: we hit. Everything in the fun facts I would have
- 54:00Speaker 1: pulled out came up in our conversation. Really, we gave
- 54:02Speaker 1: you game data facts you didn't need or want exactly honest.
- 54:06Speaker 2: That's it.
- 54:07Speaker 1: So really like fun facts is you know your fun
- 54:10Speaker 1: fact of the day is for the section you've heard
- 54:12Speaker 1: so much about this movie, in this franchise. The fun
- 54:14Speaker 1: fact is go pick up your first Pokemon games you
- 54:17Speaker 1: haven't and get your first starter, and then you come
- 54:20Speaker 1: back with your fun facts in the emails. But who
- 54:22Speaker 1: you chosen?
- 54:23Speaker 2: Who you love one hundred percent? I'll go once further
- 54:26Speaker 2: because we don't really do email correspondence on the show
- 54:29Speaker 2: on Gateleaper. On the Gateleapers feed is Bonus Round where
- 54:32Speaker 2: Odra reads out muses in a stage direction. So honestly
- 54:36Speaker 2: tell us about your favorite Pokemon, a good Pokemon memory,
- 54:39Speaker 2: you had, memories of this movie or otherwise, any of
- 54:44Speaker 2: those all in above, and please send them to Gateleapers
- 54:47Speaker 2: at gmail dot com. Give a stage direction, make Adra
- 54:50Speaker 2: say an entire sentence as a Pokemon. I'm going to
- 54:53Speaker 2: do that right now.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Actually, somehow I hear Audre doing like the Meu thing
- 54:57Speaker 1: and being that be really damn cute.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, it'd be really cute. Where like Matt does mewtwo.
- 55:02Speaker 2: I'm writing this email. Oh yeah, I'm ready one as well,
- 55:07Speaker 2: and yeah, please, Because I think Pokemon has affected all
- 55:10Speaker 2: of our lives in some way, shape or form. We
- 55:11Speaker 2: all know something of Pokemon. I truly love just like
- 55:16Speaker 2: connecting with people about this. Maybe that's why I'm like
- 55:19Speaker 2: a fan of it as an adult. They're friends I've
- 55:22Speaker 2: known for years who I did not like. Everyone knows Pokemon,
- 55:24Speaker 2: so I assume everyone was like, yeah, you know, Pikachu whatever,
- 55:27Speaker 2: But when they get deep into it, I get so excited.
- 55:31Speaker 2: I recently on gate leapers feed at patreon dot com
- 55:35Speaker 2: slash Gate Leapers. We do a monthly episode called the
- 55:38Speaker 2: Fandom Flashback, and I talked about the recent Pokemon Day
- 55:41Speaker 2: announcements and I just ripped Chicorita to shreds Gateleepers cast
- 55:47Speaker 2: member Jen text me out the blue. I almost never
- 55:50Speaker 2: get text from Gen. I definitely never get text from
- 55:53Speaker 2: Gen regarding Pokemon. And She's like, I like Chiicorita. That's
- 55:56Speaker 2: all the text. That's all the text said, dude. I
- 55:59Speaker 2: was I'd never laughed so hard in the car in
- 56:01Speaker 2: my life. I was like, I'm gonna get into an accident.
- 56:04Speaker 2: But I will say, and I hope Jenna's listening to this,
- 56:07Speaker 2: please that makes sense. She reads the Chickorita fan and
- 56:12Speaker 2: that is not that is not a good thing or
- 56:14Speaker 2: a bad thing. But like, if you had me pick,
- 56:16Speaker 2: like who among the casts a Chickorita defender, I'd be like, oh, yeah,
- 56:19Speaker 2: I can see Jen defending that one. Yeaheah, yeah. She
- 56:21Speaker 2: she is of the good people as well. Her top
- 56:24Speaker 2: is Bulbosor. I feel like almost everyone in the employee
- 56:27Speaker 2: everyone's top is Bulbasar. Me and Drew have done tearless
- 56:30Speaker 2: and Bulbosor is top, oh top, Bulbasar is a top
- 56:35Speaker 2: tier Pokemon starter or not. He is just a perfect
- 56:38Speaker 2: little guy. I mean bias because he's frog like, but
- 56:42Speaker 2: I don't think that's the reason, but like, I'll take it. Yeah, yeah,
- 56:46Speaker 2: I can't explain it either. I know Matt Nodra are
- 56:48Speaker 2: also Bulbasar fans. Jen Is you and me are. If
- 56:52Speaker 2: you don't like bulbasor also email us we want to
- 56:55Speaker 2: expose you. No, I'll Pokemon opinions are valid. We love exactly.
- 57:00Speaker 2: We too, we love the trash Pokemon.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Yes, he's so cute his little ears. So I feel
- 57:08Speaker 1: like we do need touch on real quick. We are
- 57:09Speaker 1: gonna have to do our end of segment before we
- 57:11Speaker 1: get to our game. Is there anything about this movie
- 57:13Speaker 1: you would change? Because I have one thing.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Dude, this is church. I think it cements itself in
- 57:22Speaker 2: my memory as just being perfect for what it is. Like.
- 57:25Speaker 2: It's not a perfect movie, but I think as it
- 57:27Speaker 2: stands for the first movie for what it is, it's
- 57:32Speaker 2: just perfect, even with its mistakes withstanding. Also, that vignette
- 57:37Speaker 2: in the beginning is also very adorable. I have great
- 57:40Speaker 2: memories of that. I can't think ultimately it's a cop
- 57:42Speaker 2: out because I can't think of anything off the top
- 57:43Speaker 2: of my head. Please share yours again.
- 57:46Speaker 1: Mine is also a cop out because it's kind of
- 57:47Speaker 1: a what I would what I wouldn't have changed. Did
- 57:51Speaker 1: you watch the remake of this movie?
- 57:53Speaker 2: Ever? I did? Yes, the CG remake they did? Yes, Yeah,
- 57:57Speaker 2: I have cousins. That didn't need to happen. No, it's
- 58:00Speaker 2: didn't it really.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Like there's something about the anime that doesn't translate well
- 58:04Speaker 1: to CG that kind of just made everything. Like I
- 58:07Speaker 1: think the humans all looked really bad was the problem?
- 58:10Speaker 1: That's fair, Like this movie was so good it didn't
- 58:12Speaker 1: need to be remade with new graphics. Like I'm eh, like,
- 58:16Speaker 1: there's so many other things you could have done with
- 58:18Speaker 1: this franchise. They were like twenty something movies now. Yeah,
- 58:22Speaker 1: and like I think I watch more. I think way more,
- 58:25Speaker 1: And like I there was there was a summer where
- 58:28Speaker 1: I was supposed to go on a trip with my brothers.
- 58:29Speaker 1: I took a week off work and then they ended
- 58:31Speaker 1: up bailing on the trip, so I had a week
- 58:32Speaker 1: of just staying at home and it was I can't
- 58:34Speaker 1: remember what game at the time. I think I made
- 58:36Speaker 1: them Soul Silver. I was just basically shiny hunting and
- 58:39Speaker 1: rewatching all the old Pokemon movies every night. Yeah, so
- 58:41Speaker 1: I got through like fifteen of them or so, so
- 58:44Speaker 1: like come back, then there were a bunch. Yeah, and
- 58:47Speaker 1: like there's definitely some that hold up, some that are
- 58:49Speaker 1: like surprisingly fun, some that are like this just felt
- 58:52Speaker 1: like a slightly longer episode with no real meaning like
- 58:55Speaker 1: this movie. And I think honestly the second and third,
- 58:58Speaker 1: like those first three movies, yeah, all are so powerful
- 59:02Speaker 1: and so good and so different from the show that
- 59:05Speaker 1: it made them stand out in a way. Yes, So
- 59:07Speaker 1: like remaking it was the was the only thing I
- 59:10Speaker 1: would change is go back in time. But for whose
- 59:12Speaker 1: ideat was to remake it and be like just make
- 59:14Speaker 1: something else? Please, just do something else with your life.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I understand the idea of like long running ips
- 59:22Speaker 2: that needing to propagate itself with the newer generations and
- 59:26Speaker 2: keep itself relevant and so and so forth, and it's
- 59:29Speaker 2: like it's easy if it's not broken, don't fix it
- 59:31Speaker 2: kind of situation capitalism, so on and so forth. Pokemon,
- 59:35Speaker 2: especially coming from like an Asian household, But I don't
- 59:38Speaker 2: think that's exclusive by any means. Is generational I have
- 59:42Speaker 2: a lot of cousins. I'm the firstborn of my generation.
- 59:45Speaker 2: I'm going to get unnecessarily like sentimental, like introduction to America.
- 59:50Speaker 2: You lock onto Pokemon. You're twenty eight years old now,
- 59:53Speaker 2: and you have cousins who are still entering life and
- 59:57Speaker 2: existing and adding on to your family, and the one
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: constant remainder is Pokemon. I think it crosses like barriers
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: as well, like it's appealing to both boys and girls
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: and all in betweens. It's just adorable and to see
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: all my cousins kind of interact with that the very
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: first time. The reason I watched the remake was I
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: have this girl cousin who's very young, and she clings
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: on to her family like no other. She's very dependent
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: on them. But she was able to break off and
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: just watch this movie with me. She bombarded me with questions.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: That being said, it's like the separation of I'm a
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: twenty eight year old adult now and this is this
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: person's first interaction and she's loving it. So let that sit.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: But I totally understand where you're coming from. So I
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: only have like a sentimental attachment to the cg one
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: or like understanding what it's meaning is to the newer generation.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: But I understand where you're coming from. You know, that's
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: a good point though, Like you, I think you're right.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: I think there's like a selfish view of like it's
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: my childhood thing. You're then like making a like a
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Korea of in the CG way. But like the fact
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: that for someone else, and the fact that someone you
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: have like a close connection with, it was their entry
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: into this world, Like that alone, to me makes it
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: worth its existence. So yeah, I guess I'm sorry for that. No, no, no, no,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: her parents, that was the shit version. They shouldn't have
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: done that. I was good. My thirteen year old brother
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: when he was a baby, he watched the first movie.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: He watched that one. That's see But that's not their fault,
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: you know, But it's kind of their fault. It's they're
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: giving her a subpar product.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: But again, it may have been someone's way in that
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: wouldn't have gotten the other movies maybe, like.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: For sure, who knows. So you know what, parent, thank
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: you for the nerds. Yeah, the adults in their life
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: aren't nerds. Yeah, so it is what it is. It happens,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Here you go, we all
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: we all love a Pikachu. We all love a Pikachu.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: So lastly, before we get into our guests in our
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: minigame for this week, Jason, we need to rate this movie.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: And I it feels like the kind of thing we
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: could probably skip doing and totally miss putting in an
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: episode because we did that at all. Not that I'm
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: predicting that we did that, or that this is a
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: late recording and no one knows about it, but I
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: think we both kind of are on the same wavelength
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: of this movie is pretty damn perfect and will be
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: the top of our list for a long time.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Which is a crazy statement. It feels like a crazy
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: statement from two men, two adult men, to be like
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: this Pokemon the first movie a perfect film?
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Okay, one, I won't argue. You're right, it is pretty
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: much a perfect film. Secondly, given the rest of the
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: films will be comparing it to, it's not a high
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: bar across, but I will give it a score, and
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: that score is a new two out of mew It's
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty out of one hundred and fifty one.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: WHOA wow, that's good man.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that's genuinely what I had. I mean, like like
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: we said, it's it is a near perfect film. It
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: does so much right. It is so good. And yes,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I know we've gone back and forth on the whole
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: offing is wrong in the franchise about fighting animals against
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: each other, so that's where it'll lose its one point
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: for me, but super fair.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: I was just want to give it a masterball out here.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: It's a it's a faithful advitation. It's it's it's a
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: kid's franchise. That's ultimately what it is. It's hokey, it's
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: about friendship and cuteness, but also battling monsters and animals
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: against each other. I think it's a perfect anotation of
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: the video game. And as far as these films are concerned,
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: it's it's got a through line, it's got a plot,
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: it's got it. It stays on point, you know.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and I I will challenge anyone to find me
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: another video game film, one that we have done or
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: will eventually do, that has a quote so memorable it
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: has been quoted outside of the video game industry and
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: realm in like normal conversation and misattributed when in reality
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: it was mewtwo.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: I can't wait for like I don't know five years
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: into this podcast when we finally get into the Minecraft
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: movie because the Minecraft movie is fresh during recording. Right now,
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: the Minecraft movie is fresh. Let's see if Minecraft can
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: dethrow in this film. So I think that's gonna affect
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: our top five as well. Do we omit it from
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: our top five? Because, like we do, we do a
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: top five graphic. Here me and Drew are separately ranking
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: our top five movies that we've watched so far. You
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: can see those on Instagram at gate Leapers Pod. Do
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: we have to admit it because it's just gonna sit
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: at number one for forever.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Yeah, let's not waste our listeners time. We will discuss
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: off air, but I think we will do something special
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: for this one so that the leader boards can be
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: unaffected by Pokemon dominating it for many, many, many many months.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Welcome to the studio. Our contestants for the day, Matt
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: and Nodra.
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: Hello, it's good to be here in the press placed Judo.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Completely what you studio? Totally totally unique.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Yeah, we we were the kind of show that has
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: the budget for multiple studios for each show to be
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: completely unique and different.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you should see the Bonus Round Studio.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: It's this closet back here.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: I was gonna say it is the Fandominium, just a
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: miniature version of the Fandomonium Studio. It made it like
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: one third scale.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's tiny. We shrink ourselves down. It's just like
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: hunched over like children from.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: A little claustrophobic. So it's rough, but you know it's
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: worth it. It's so worth it.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: And the bit for the mini for the mini, well,
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: I mean, you guys came on to this episode for
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: our inaugural episode for Super Mario Bros. Which we're very
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: appreciative of. Uh, that honestly felt more like a transition
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: though this one. You guys were like, no, we want
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: to lock this. Oh yeah, which I want to explore that.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Me and Drew have talked plenty about our connection to Pokemon.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: What are your guys's connections to Pokemon and the first
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: movie Pokemon.
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: I feel like I'm a young millennial, so it's always
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: been a part of my life. It was banned for
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: a little bit due to it teaching about evolution.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: Can't have that in the church, Oh my god.
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: But then parents quickly realized it's just a bunch of
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: little cartoon animals and that's cute. So I played Pokemon Yellow,
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: Pokemon Gold back in the day on the game Boy Color.
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: Loved the reruns of the anime whenever they would appear
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: on the terrestrial channels because we didn't have access to
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: the premium channels. And yeah, the movie was a huge feature.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: We had the VHS. I believe it was one of
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: those ones that came with like a promo card, but
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: we definitely lost that.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Yeah, A worth a fortune now, oh yeah, seriously, yeah,
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: or fifty bucks? What about you? Adra?
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: I was started out similar to Matt in that it
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: was banned in my household, but my parents did not
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: back down. It was banned all through the time that
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: I was living under their roof. I watched it when
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: I was in college as part of my like reclaiming rebellious.
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: I'm going to consume the media that I couldn't watch
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: as a youth, absolutely fucking slapped. I was a full
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: grown adult the first time I watched it.
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: No regrets that first movie is it holds such a
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: nostalgia place for me. Not just like the reruns of
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: watching it, but it's got such an original Pokemon mood
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: to it. It's like, yes, let's gather everyone for a
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: big Pokemon battle, and who's the villain?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Oh, it's mewtwo classic spoilers. We talk a ton about
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: how it's so ingrained in the anime, but also it
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: does not feel like an anime episode. At the same time,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: it's fascinating stuff. We have Pokemon in our life and
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: our friendship all over, similar to me and Drew the
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: first time, I think I maybe interacted with I got
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: you a team mystic secret Santa.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: I still have it nice.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, I mean I'm team instinct, so
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: I hate it, but like I love that for you.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: Gross what.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: No instincts are fine?
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: If you were Valor, we'd have to do something which takes.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: The yellow one instinct. Cool.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I was a sucker for his aptos. He's my favorite
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: of the birds, so when the team was labeled.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Him, I had to.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: He's just a big, spiky chicken boy.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: He is absolutely Well, we have a game for you, guys.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: We have We do have a game for you guys.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Actually, Jason, before we get into the game, can I
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: actually do me a quick favor? Can you just read
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: the first letter of each hint for me?
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: What the fuck s s U R p R what
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: R I s it's prize game time. Oh, I didn't
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: realize that.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: This is a surprise game time. Matt take it away?
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Ah, yes, because half.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: The game's moster on what this is legitimate.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Running the game part of the game.
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: What's happening that has just pulled the jacket that he
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: wears as a game master out of literally nowhere. I
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: live in this house and I did not know that
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: that was gonna happen.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: This whole time he's been in the closet. Hello, and
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: welcome to the press.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Play mini game y, Jason, Yo, this is happening. I
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: got these answers for person of all. May I say
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: this game? Will save it for another day because it's
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: totally legitimate game with actual answers and could work. No,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: I decided for a Pokemon game. Who better to face
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: each other off in a battle? But being you what,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: well you know.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: This is same.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I just speak so far away from.
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: The I've heard of the classic beef Cheek Brothers Pokemon showdown.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I think I've got Oldra here as my assistant. Yes,
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: oh my god, how the tables have flipped.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: I don't know what it was. I think at some
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: point early on, I was like I had ideas for games.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: I was like, you know what the like if anyone's
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: gonna face off, Like, when are we going to get
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: the chance to play on press play? It had to
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: be the Pokemon episode and we had met coming in already,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: so that's fair. Wow, I I've never this is a nightmare?
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: Well is this a nightmare? Or is it a mysterious
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: set of questions?
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Wow? Let me close my computer because apparently throw this away.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: This is garbage, all right?
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: When when Drew gave me this prompt to make a
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: game that was connected to Pokemon and specifically the era
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: of Pokemon, the first movie, right, it kind of made
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: me think original one five one. So that's the territory
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: we're in. Maybe doga Bees sneaking in there, but not
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: too many other little guys. So I before we get
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: started with this game, I want to ask if you
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: remember a viral social media post from about fifteen years ago.
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: I believe it was originally posted to Reddit, but it
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: definitely made the rounds on Tumblr and everything else. That
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: was around fifteen years ago. Do you remember the post
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: original one hundred and fifty one Pokemon. According to my boyfriend.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: Oh god, I feel like I've seen posts like these
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: were like they're like they give it to their mom
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: and they're like name this and it's big, big tongueer.
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: Or whatever exactly, which would of course be Pikachu. Yes,
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: Pikachu exactly. It's always speakach you. So I have in
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: front of me a list of ten names that fifteen
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: years ago this person's boyfriend gave to original Pokemon. They're
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: going to start out a little more obvious and then
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: get more difficult as we go along.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: We're going to take turns.
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: Who goes first, okay, but ultimately if you don't get
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: it right, we'll pass to the next person and we'll
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: keep going with guesses back and forth until a correct
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: answer is given. Audra is going to read the names
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: clearly and can do so multiple times, but cannot give
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: you definitions or language of origin, as this is not
- 1:12:19Speaker 5: a spelling bee, so why would she so. First up,
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: we're going to have the name of one of these
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: Pokemon that is a clue to a real Pokemon, a
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: real member of the one five to one, but something
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: this person's boyfriend named. So Drew, here is your first
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: Pokemon named by my boyfriend.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: Storkpecker.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Well, hold on, storkpecker. Stork Oh yeah, yeah, of course,
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: of course.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: Stork pecker.
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: Imagine the Pokemon's say it's day. That's what you're doing
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: I know immediately has to be one of the flying times.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: It's a bird of some sort, but like, none of
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: them really feels storkish to me. So I'm gonna just
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: take a swing and go with Piggy.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: It's not Piggy steal. Yeah, Jason, it's your guest. Now,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: this is a bad time to reveal that sometimes I
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: take how many of the one five one? Can you
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: remember quizzes for fun?
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: And I do it? Uh, it's gotta be Fierro for
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: a point. It is indeed Phieroh yes, thank you, definite. Yeah.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: But then there's Bombadier, who is an actual story. I'm sorry,
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: losing listeners by the minute. Yeah, people don't care about
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: the one five to one.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Quit it with your bumbae is like, I'll be honest,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: My first thought was deliberate.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: We're not going Gen two here.
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: No, strictly Gen one only. Thank you Pokemon the first movie.
- 1:13:48Speaker 5: Have you discussed how arrogant that is as them as
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: a franchise first movie.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: We also talked about it the fact that it has
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: three titles. It's known as Pokemon the First Movie. It's
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: also known as as Mew and mewtwo the Pokemon Movie,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: and also mewtwo Strikes Back. Yes is which is really
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: like a sequel sounding name, like when did he strike
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: the first time?
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: Are we gonna get that movie? Are we gonna get
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: Pokemon the Zeroh Movie?
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: Okay, so Jason, you're gonna be up first on this one.
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: It is your turn to go first. Uh dre, what's
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: that Pokemon name? Said by the boyfriend Evil Face. Oh,
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: so I'm gonna guess I'm gonna go with Haunter, going
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: Haunter for not Haunter.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: Dang.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: That was also that was like my top pick I had, Like, Yeah,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: I figured I feel like the obvious next pick would
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: be Ganger, But I don't want to just do that
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: because I think it might be a little more out
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: of left field.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: Isn't Jinx Oh that's good. It's not that. It's not Jenks. No,
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: that might be.
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: Evil Face.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: And until someone gets it, Yeah, mister mime is the
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: most evil.
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: Well, that may be true, it's not what this person's
- 1:15:04Speaker 5: boyfriend called damns to mine.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm gasping, like I'm not looking at the answers.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: I mean, I'm gonna go with the obviously what it's
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: in the next choice.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Would be Gangar. It is okay.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: I honestly Jason with You a Hunter was the better
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: choice for that day.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Though, Yes, yeah, definitely floating evil face was that one.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: Like legitimately when it was pitched on, it's either Gangar
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: or Jinx. You're gonna guess one of the two and
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: I'll get the other.
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: If you're wrong, We'll see if Jinks shows up later
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: in this list. Take away this next one, it's for
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: Drew awkward fan.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: What awkward fant?
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: Awkward fan.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of like elephant like Pokemon of
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: the first generation that faint would go with. But nothing's
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: hitting me weirdly again, I've got don fan on the break,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: stupid movie advertising awkward fant m hm, yes, you know
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: what weird one, but it's somehow speaking to me. I'm
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: gonna go with executor. That's a good one.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: It's not executor, Oh shoo, is it drowsy?
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: It is the drowsy.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Oh he's got a little taper snout.
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: You're right, he got a snoop going on. That kind
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: of a small trunk. I suppose we speaking of small trunks. Yeah,
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: that is actually an excellent segue, so he'll polls the
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: band for that.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Jason, here is your next name.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: Speaking of small trunks, your next clue is showed.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Awesome. Uh, only because it kind of sounds like maybe
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: the boyfriend like knew a little bit. Is it electrode?
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Oh that is a clever guess, but this is not
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: a clever boyfriend. Okay, gotcha? True?
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: I think I'm a clever guy. Is it digt it
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: is it lets? You're so right, dig Let is chowed.
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: I believe Doug Trio was called triple Chod. All right,
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: it's a drew up.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: First for this one.
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: Dra fish Walker fish fish Walker, the Texas Ranger.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Brilliant name. That should be a real pokemon. Yeah, okay,
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: who's fish like that has feet? I mean, like jen
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: one has a pretty generic ass fish.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: M hmmm. Could it be tent to cool.
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: It's not tent to cool, although many feet I suppose
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: if we're counting those as fate.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: I was on a similar vein, I was is it
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: tent to cruel. Sorry to do that to Drew.
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: Even more feet, But it's not pentacryl. Now interesting, back
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: over to Drew.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: Could it be gold duck. That's a good guess, but
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: it's not gold duck. Oh wowly right, Yeah, I guess
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: I'm running out of fish see sea king seeking? No,
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: it's not it's not seeking.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, because otherwise, like I'm trying her other like again,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: water hips are the most plentiful in the first chance.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: There's a bunch of pick from. But I can't think
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: of any that you would like.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: Walker seems like such a weird thing, like Dogong's slappy
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: flat flippers.
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: Slappy flat flippers. It's not do Goong. But yeah, I
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: see how these could be described as fish walkers more
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: fish like than the ones that have been thrown out,
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: I would say, fascinating, but definitely has legs.
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: Definitely has has legs.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: What the hell I'm blanking.
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: Equal parts fish and walker?
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Yeah, huh, water tight gen ones. I feel like I'm
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: cheating if I take too long. Now, I'll just cut
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: it out. Okay, let me just reach into the animals
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: of my Oh oh uh wow. This is a stretch
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: in my opinion, But Is it Kaboot Tops. It would
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: be a stretch because it's not Kaboo Tops.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: But that is a good call though. On that same
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: vein as lots of little arms. Could it be Amis Star.
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: It's not Amistar, But I think we might get through
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: all of the yeah pokemon. In going through this, I'll
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: throw out some more clues for the next round of guesses.
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: If you're two stone, you might not be able to
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: remember this one.
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: That's a good clue.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't want to make it.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: It's like a it's a yeah, it's.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: A great bigger that's a great clue. I'm wearing the jacket.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: I guess I guess I could see it. Vaporion. It
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: is Vaporion. Yeah, Oh my god, Waterstone. That's a great clue.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: That clue. Yeah, I forgot about these pokemon. I know
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: my first gen.
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: You know it took these bloody beef cheek brothers so
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: long to get that one.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: I don't I don't know who's going first.
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: Next it is up Jason.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Up Jason, get it out of him? Is not awesome.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: I hope that next thing is not.
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: Your clue is.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Arm eater? Hate that arm eater? Hate that a lot.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: So Now the now the decision is is it more
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: about arms or is it more about eating? Snorlac is
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: a great eater second or third base? I guess I'll
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: go with a fairly obvious one. Let's go my champ
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: Ah lots of arms. Yeah, that's a good guess, but
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: it's not right. Okay, that's that's okay, Dre.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: I'm picturing with the o g art they probably showed
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: for this, and is the snore Relaxe like eating something.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: It looks like it's almost out his arm in its mouth.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: But then I think like Muck also had a similar
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: art where it was like it hand in its mouth
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: because it was eating something. I feel like Snooralax is
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: too obviously, there's too many other funny names you come
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: up with. I'm gonna go with muck.
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: Going with muck, I like it, but it's not it's
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: not muck. I'm going a little out of left field here.
- 1:21:20Speaker 5: We got to get into the headspace of a simpleton.
- 1:21:24Speaker 5: And what if a simpleton saw h merrill whac and
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: said that bone that he has, that's a chicken leg
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: or that's an arm that it just ate. So I'm
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: gonna go with Merril whac. I see the logic. Maybe
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: don't go so simple, damn, but that's that's.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: Not an idiot.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: I mean, I'm nothing's coming to mind immediately, even if
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: I go way out there. I think we gotta just
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: put Snorelax on the table to make sure it's not
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: that so snox.
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: Sure, yeah, throw snow lox on that table, watch that
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: table break.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: No, No, it's not snow lax. I think.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what you said. I think
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: we're ready for some clues. I'm wo okay, yea unfair
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: for me to get the clue.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: Let me do it. Throw one more weird clue first, Okay,
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: that's in that case. Then I'll think of something.
- 1:22:09Speaker 5: There's definitely a animal clue in the name that they've
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: gone for, Like by going for arm eater, they're thinking
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: of a certain animal when they're naming it that.
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: I love that. Okay, I understand now what Pokemon looks
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: like that let's see here. Yeah, I'm also brain I
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: understand the clue that was given. I am saying that
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: the most like this animal is I'm speaking too much
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: for Matt to cut it. Cool, awesome, that is how
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: that works, right, if.
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: I said it another three times, would that be helpful?
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: I think so, yes, yes, yes, please arm eater, arm eater.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: Get it one like you're like you've just been hit
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: by it a trick attack from Pikachu, and you're like
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: injured arm eater.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: That's oh oh okay, yeah, that's unlocking things. Can I can?
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: I guess sand slash.
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: It is slash wow?
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: Oh wow? Yeah, oh wow, because it's like an ant eater. Yeah,
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: like a pangolin. I was just about to say the
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: same thing, but I felt our listeners drop as I
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: said that.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: Panglings are underrated animals, and our listenership came back beglin enjoyed.
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: They feel represented make twelve percent of our listenership.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: All right, Next up, this one's for dream Na Ruto.
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: Nuto.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: I mean that's a gimme. You think it's a gimmey?
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: I mean, which Pokemon says believe it?
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: I think, Well, right now here, I'm kind of tor
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: between two because I'm thinking orange and has a to
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: throw in Marriwuac or just goofy looking and orange which
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: might also be Magma.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: So I'm gonna go with magar Orange. It's not Magma. Yeah, unfortunately,
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: I watched a bit of Naruto. No it's fine, No,
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: it's yeah, it's it's actually not is it nine tails?
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: Oh it's not nine tails? Okay, I was like, solid,
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: that is a good call, though, damn what Yeah, that
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: does make sense. This friend's dumb and not a weeb.
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: It took me a second to understand why this works.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: But okay, yeah, I mean.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Let's also take it take it ahead. This guy knows
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: enough to name a Pokemon Aruto, but doesn't know the
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: original one fifty one. There's a really weird discrepancy in
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: their anime.
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: This guy falls into a strange Van diagram exactly.
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: But I, like Audrey, you said it didn't immediately click
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: with you why this one worked?
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: M yeah, giving additional clues.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: I weird one, then I'm gonna go with oddish. Whoa
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: we do like oddish, but it's not oddish.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: I was thinking that the leaf, the leafs, the hair
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: being pointed, but also the leaf imagery with his headband
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: or something.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: Mmmm. Okay, okay, Jason, I kind of am going off
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: of that as well, but on a different spectrum. Is
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: it electa buzz? It's not electibus?
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: Why would you say it's electibus blonde, spiky blonde, spiky yeah,
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: shikey yeah, yeah. I'll say Drew was onto something with
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: the headband. To give Drew a clue for this next one.
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: Thinking about the headband.
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: That couldn't just be chop. It's not my chop headband,
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: doesn't he.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: In some depictions he does, but I think has the belt.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: I'm thinking it's like some attire.
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: M hmm, yeah, there's definitely I'd say the Naruto link
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: is the headband.
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: I would agree, that's that's where I took it.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: Perhaps the insignia. Yes, whoa, that was a great clue.
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: Is it poll I'll go poly whirl. It's not poll Whoa.
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: That's okay, okay, so fifty to fifty is it poly Raf?
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: It's not pop, it's polly Wag.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: It's poly Toad.
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: No, I'm jucking. It's polly Wag. It is polly Wag.
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: Good stuff. Yeah, it's like the headband.
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: Well, yeah, absolutely right. Why did I think his head
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: been with a leaf on it or something? Don't know
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: why I'm thinking that because it's the leaf village. Yeah,
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: it is talking.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: That's like Naruto is very much in that realm of
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: like when a bunch of anime came out that were
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: they were going to be too long, like we already
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: knew they were gonna be like over one hundred episodes,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: and I was like, you know what, I can't do
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: those anymore. I'm giving up on them. So I only know,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: like I know, like a very broad generalization. So I know,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: the Hidden Leaf Village is a thing. Okay, it's a
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: spiral on this headband that doesn't make sense. Damn good
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: good save on that one.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: All right. The next one is for Jason.
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: Your clue is HIV?
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: Is it the idea of the pokemon as HIV? Or
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: is it giving you HIV? Uh?
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: Poory Gone, Pory Gone looks prime to give you HIV?
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Or is the concept of HIV? It's not? Okay?
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I also was kind of going with the idea
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: of like the concept, which seems like a really weird
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: thing to still use. I'm gonna go with wheezing.
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: Yes, I just kind of.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: I just picture like HIV, like any old posts about
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: you getting kind of like that like like microscopic view
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: of like germs in general, and I just sort of
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: yet you're wheezing in there.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Oh, I think that's what they were going for. That's
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: a very weird pole, actually quite.
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: Clever, this boyfriend. All right, one name each left to
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: start things off. So, Drew, here is your final name.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: Craw Craw.
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: Yeah, y'all doing like that craw and then a clean
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: read craw.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: I I'm really torn between like one or two, but
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go with Zapdos.
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: Oh, okay, that's good, one of your favorite Pokemon.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Yeah, one of my favorite gen ones.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not as suspense. I recently watched a Futurama
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: episode where doctor Zoitberg just goes craw, so influenced by that,
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with Kingler.
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: Ah, like I'm crawl Dad as well. Yeah it's not
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: it's not Kingla.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: Okay, it's real smart though, I'm still kind of on
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: the bird. I'm still kind of bird pilled. I still
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: have a very bird vibe going on here. One of
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: the other legendary birds, but I feel like there's kind
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: of too much to go off with them, So maybe
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: a more lame bird. Let's try spiro.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: Ah, it's not Spira.
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: Mmmm?
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: Is it pigeoto? It's not pigo toe. We're getting so close. Oh,
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: is it pigot Away at that time, is indeed pets?
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: Yeah, crawl. It just was so like funny to see
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: early on. It's just like this could be anything.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: I almost I'm curious about the other two birds in
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: the generation were called by the boyfriend to get there.
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: I think it was possibly like a tweet and it
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: was just like noises that birds. Yeah, okay, we have
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: one final Pokemon name and the schools are pretty damn close.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: So Jason Europe first on this one.
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: This pokemon was called what the heck?
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: So many to choose from, so many to choose from
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: for a while. I am only going to choose this
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: again because it was previously mentioned and kind of like
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: hinted that at Matt, is it Jinx? It's not Jinks?
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: Fuck you. I hate when you do this.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: I'm trying to think, what are the weirdest looking genuine pokemon,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: like just like absolutely like h and I'm gonna say
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: something myself, this is the pokemon I genuinely dislike. So
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: maybe he also just liked it. Is it Pincer?
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: It's not Pincer. But I do also find that kind
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: of like what.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Yeah, weird like sideways vagina mouth and I already don't
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: like bug types.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: Don't be worse. Yes, this opened up more possibilities. Now
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: let's go with an easy one. Let's go, let's go muck.
- 1:30:36Speaker 5: Going second appearance backwards, come of course, what the heck?
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Indeed, yes, it's not muck. These are so.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: Hard o good weird ones. I really want to we
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: want to get the hint territory after my guess, give
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: you a second the thing before we give a hint,
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: because Jason.
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: Can you can't do just to speed it up.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: You know, what's a weird one? Just genuinely kind of
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: weird to look at. I could see someone being shocked by.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: What about star You?
- 1:31:04Speaker 5: Okay, like this doesn't look like an animal? What the
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: heck is this kind of.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Yeah, like up until star You, every Pokemon kind of
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: is like cute, has eyes, is like a body, and
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: then it's just like this weird jewel with starfish.
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's not it's not star You. But I
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: do like that as a guess. Uh is this one
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: is really hard?
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: It is? It's really hard.
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: Yeah, because the only clue I can think of might
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: narrow it down a little bit more than we want.
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: No, I think that might Harden the question, Oh are
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: you saying hard? Intentionally? I think he is Jason. I
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: think he is this guy all right, what makes me hard?
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: We've already done Vaporion, so out the question. I don't
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: love that. That that's that's where my brain is gone.
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: Is it Bell? And I don't love that either.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: You've got me going down two routes here, So I'm
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: gonna go with the more obvious one because I think
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: it's what I wanted to be. Is it Metapod?
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: That's what the boyfriend said?
- 1:32:11Speaker 5: Oh good stuff. Okay, there we go. That's our game.
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: That was That was so good man, Thank you.
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: Yeah, any time, anytime. If Drew messaged him like, can
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: you make a game about Pokemon? Oh yeah, It's all
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: I do with my time.
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, these schools are so close. I just
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: I do want to preface this that Drew has beaten
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: me in almost every Pokemon competition I've ever done ever.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Two Pokemon episodes of Pandemonium. If that's true, that really
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: makes me sad and mad.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: One Pokemon Pandemonium because your Okacal episode was pre my
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: being a guest. That is actually it was the first
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: episode of years. I listened to when you invited me
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: on the show, but I was there for the live Pokemon.
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: And you still beat me in that. Somehow you just
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: listen retroactively.
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: Look, I mean, this could be your chance of revenge.
- 1:33:02Speaker 5: Please God let it be so it would at least
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: give you that little little legend, this rivalry rough Week
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: Matt Fashion Garret. Oh yeah, and you need a win
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: on a game show, on a podcast.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: Naming naming Pokemon based on a fifteen year.
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: Old meme, This will really lift your spirits.
- 1:33:25Speaker 5: Okay, Well, I can reveal that Drew scored five points
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: and Jason scored five points. It's a tie, Yes, equal
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: beef cheeks both some perfectly symmetrical.
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: Size iron sharpens iron.
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: I think it's steel type in Pokemon. You truly are
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: the plus all to my minum. Ah, that was disgusting
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: to say that.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: I would be making sure to that.
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: Oh, thank you both for coming on and joining us.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Thank you Jason for falling for my surprise.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: I'm exhausted.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: I still hanging over the fact that I legitimately built
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: a functional game like those answers. Everything there is legit
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: and functional. That is also a surprise secret riddle for you.
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that's fantastic. That's a lot of effort. We need
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: to play that game at some point.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think at some point I still have
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: the notes. We'll get you on for another thing, or
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: we'll save it for some other reason, but we'll use it.
