- 0:01Speaker 1: But you're being cagey with us this morning.
- 0:03Speaker 2: All right, it's time for Sean Patrick Means. He's here
- 0:09Speaker 2: to review movies for us. Sean is a writer reporter
- 0:14Speaker 2: editor at the Salt Lake Tribune sl trip dot com,
- 0:17Speaker 2: celebrating their new new offices.
- 0:21Speaker 1: They made a nice move and settled in.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Sean is also a film reviewer, and you can find
- 0:26Speaker 2: his reviews at moviecricket dot net.
- 0:29Speaker 1: What movies do you have for us?
- 0:30Speaker 3: We've got three movies to talk about this week. We
- 0:33Speaker 3: will start, unfortunately, with The Naked Gun. Unfortunately, if you're
- 0:37Speaker 3: doing worse.
- 0:38Speaker 2: First, now, Sean, I heard this morning a colleague of
- 0:43Speaker 2: yours say, I laughed so hard I couldn't stop.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Laughing at that movie. Okay, I just thought you should know.
- 0:51Speaker 3: That's nice. I'm glad someone happened. Okay, I had fun
- 0:55Speaker 3: and parts. Okay, this is okay. So this is a
- 0:57Speaker 3: reboot of the nineteen eighty seven comedy broad spoof of
- 1:01Speaker 3: Cop shows Leslie Nielsen as the tender Frank Dreben who
- 1:04Speaker 3: was And the reason Leslie Neielson was so funny is
- 1:06Speaker 3: that he didn't know he was being funny, or at
- 1:08Speaker 3: least he acted like he didn't know he was being funny.
- 1:10Speaker 3: He acted like in the later in later movies, he
- 1:13Speaker 3: thought he was funny and things didn't and it didn't
- 1:16Speaker 3: work out. It wasn't as bad.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's the original.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Naked Gune as funny as we remember it to be.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Or if I went back and looked at it, what
- 1:24Speaker 2: I go, This isn't that funny.
- 1:25Speaker 3: There are bits, There are bits, and I mean one thing.
- 1:28Speaker 3: One reason in that movie, those movies are not shown
- 1:31Speaker 3: on television a lot is because one of the stars
- 1:33Speaker 3: and it is OJ Simpson. Yeah, that's why you don't
- 1:36Speaker 3: see that Norburg.
- 1:39Speaker 1: No for me.
- 1:40Speaker 4: The Police, the Police Squad TV series, Yes, funny, was.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Very fun Yes, it was six episodes. It got canceled.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It got canceled because the studio said, or the network said,
- 1:51Speaker 3: people had to pay attention. Yeah, okay, they couldn't. They couldn't,
- 1:57Speaker 3: you know, they couldn't do it while they couldn't watch
- 1:59Speaker 3: the show while they're folding laundry again, all those things.
- 2:02Speaker 3: So this in this reboot, Liam Neeson stars as Frank
- 2:06Speaker 3: Drevin Junior.
- 2:07Speaker 1: You would think he could be good in this, and he's.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You know, he's the toughest copp in Police Squad. He's
- 2:13Speaker 3: also a loose cannon, which is why the city council
- 2:14Speaker 3: wants to shut down Police Squad. There's always that atension.
- 2:18Speaker 3: There's also a big murder case involving a tech billionaire.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Tech billionaires are you know, I can't imagine why people
- 2:24Speaker 3: want to make them into, you know, bad guys in movies.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeh.
- 2:29Speaker 3: The sister of the guy got killed is played by
- 2:32Speaker 3: Pamela Anderson, and she and Frank Revin start falling for
- 2:35Speaker 3: each other. One of the movies highlights is a montage
- 2:38Speaker 3: of their weekend away in a snowy cabin, which gets weird.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Pamela Anderson is the best thing about this movie, and
- 2:47Speaker 3: that and that is a genuine compliment. She's really really funny,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and she knows that to be funny and something like that,
- 2:54Speaker 3: you have to sacrifice a little dignity and you have
- 2:57Speaker 3: to play it straight, and you have to play it
- 2:58Speaker 3: very straight. She she I hope somebody takes notice and
- 3:01Speaker 3: like starts building a sitcom around her, because I think
- 3:05Speaker 3: I think she's ready. I think she would be so good.
- 3:08Speaker 3: The problem here is that the jokes general that the
- 3:10Speaker 3: jokes are hitting miss and Nissan is not as good
- 3:14Speaker 3: here as as it looked like on paper.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Perfect.
- 3:19Speaker 3: The movie plays with his image, the whole particular set
- 3:22Speaker 3: of skills, tough guy sort of that that role. But Nisan,
- 3:27Speaker 3: it feels like he is a little bit in on
- 3:29Speaker 3: the joke. And that's and that's death. That's the problem.
- 3:32Speaker 3: That's the problem here. That's that and that that makes
- 3:34Speaker 3: it nice.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I got those later naked gun Leslie Nielsen vibes.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Going already like he knows he's in a silly movie.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I'm in a silly movie.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yeah, two and a half. Like I said, hit, it's
- 3:46Speaker 3: hit or miss. You'll be okay there, you know, if
- 3:49Speaker 3: you like, if you want to just you know, have
- 3:51Speaker 3: fun and turn your brain off, there's you know, it's there.
- 3:54Speaker 3: So two and a half and it's playing everywhere. Of course,
- 3:56Speaker 3: let's go with the bad guys too, bad guys too.
- 3:59Speaker 3: I don't know if you remember the bad guys from
- 4:01Speaker 3: three years ago.
- 4:02Speaker 1: It was a surprise to me.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yes. Uh, this is an animated movie where you have
- 4:05Speaker 3: bad animal characters like the Big bad Wolf and so on.
- 4:11Speaker 3: They they they are they are a gang of criminals
- 4:13Speaker 3: who do who pull heists and bank robberies and such.
- 4:16Speaker 3: But they but in the first movie, they decided to
- 4:18Speaker 3: give up their career of robbing banks and plotting heists
- 4:21Speaker 3: and become good guys. The problem, of course, is nobody believes.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Them because it's the Big Bad Wolf.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Because it's the Big Bad Wolf, and it was one
- 4:31Speaker 3: of the better animated movies of that year. And darn it,
- 4:36Speaker 3: the sequel is just as smart and just as funny.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Like I said, turning good isn't that easy? Uh, the
- 4:44Speaker 3: Wolf applies for a job at a bank and then
- 4:46Speaker 3: is reminded, oh, that the bank's robbed three times. Trust.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Trust is a problem. Yeah. So but there's a new group,
- 4:53Speaker 3: new group of thieves out there, and they're framing the
- 4:55Speaker 3: bad guys for their crimes. So it's it's they're trying
- 4:59Speaker 3: to convince police commissioner that they didn't do those jobs,
- 5:03Speaker 3: and they have to, but they wind up uh getting
- 5:07Speaker 3: working with the other thieves blackmails involved because the new
- 5:12Speaker 3: themes are threatening to expose Governor Foxington, who was the
- 5:16Speaker 3: major character. And she's a fox literally and figuratively, and
- 5:21Speaker 3: uh foy Diane, but but she's she's she's friends, she's
- 5:26Speaker 3: friends with the Big Bed Wolf. And possibly more than friends.
- 5:30Speaker 3: And uh and also we found out in the first
- 5:34Speaker 3: movie she has an alter ego where she's a criminal mastermind.
- 5:38Speaker 3: So but she's gone good and she's the governor now.
- 5:41Speaker 3: So anyhow, there is a there there's a plot again
- 5:45Speaker 3: involving a tech billionaire. Oh yeah, it's a thing. This one,
- 5:48Speaker 3: this one is, and this one is has a rocket
- 5:51Speaker 3: going into space and is doing a lavish wedding. Well,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I know, funny, funny, funny, how that works. This is
- 6:00Speaker 3: genuinely funny. It's really clever. And they got to I mean,
- 6:03Speaker 3: most of the voice casts from I think most of
- 6:05Speaker 3: the voice casts in the first movie are bad. Sam
- 6:07Speaker 3: Rockwell is the big bad wolf, Mark Maron is the snake.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Alcafina is the tarantula. Zazi Beats is the Governor. It's
- 6:17Speaker 3: great cat. They got it. They got it.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Bide together, which is not easy to do for I
- 6:22Speaker 2: don't even remember the first one.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it was rather a music three and a half.
- 6:27Speaker 4: All right, for the bad guys too, all right, then
- 6:29Speaker 4: together together. Saw the trailer for this and it creep
- 6:33Speaker 4: me out.
- 6:33Speaker 3: The movie will creep you out too. This is a
- 6:35Speaker 3: very sharp, very well done body horror movie. You have
- 6:39Speaker 3: Alison Brie and Dave Franco. They are they're playing a
- 6:43Speaker 3: couple who have left the big city to go live
- 6:45Speaker 3: in the country. She's got a job as a teacher.
- 6:47Speaker 3: He's a musician. He still has these rock and roll
- 6:50Speaker 3: stardom dreams. And with all that, there's you know, commitment
- 6:54Speaker 3: issues of you know, you got to grow up and
- 6:56Speaker 3: are you with me or you're not with me?
- 6:58Speaker 1: Sort of.
- 6:59Speaker 3: At one point they all into a cave. They're out
- 7:01Speaker 3: hiking and they fall into a cave and there's a
- 7:02Speaker 3: supernatural something or other that let you just let you
- 7:06Speaker 3: discover and they start realizing that they are bonding. Literally
- 7:12Speaker 3: they wake up. They get knocked out in the cave
- 7:14Speaker 3: and when they wake up, they're like their legs are
- 7:16Speaker 3: sticking together and they have to pull them apart, and
- 7:19Speaker 3: skin comes off and stuff, and and it gets worse
- 7:23Speaker 3: and when they're trying to fight it, it gets even worse.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Like I said, really solid body horror here. The effects
- 7:32Speaker 3: are just creepy. It's very creepy. And this is a
- 7:38Speaker 3: movie you may watch through your fingers good, but it's
- 7:43Speaker 3: a great it's a great allegory about how uh you
- 7:46Speaker 3: know about commitment and you know, do you when you're
- 7:51Speaker 3: being told you should be together? Are you're fighting that?
- 7:53Speaker 3: And can you fight that? And you know? And that's
- 7:57Speaker 3: and that's the whole meaning of love as Plato just right.
- 8:00Speaker 3: But if you and and if you don't remember that,
- 8:02Speaker 3: there's a song and head head would get the angry
- 8:04Speaker 3: inch that explains it to you. Oh yes, Uh, And
- 8:06Speaker 3: it's and watching it happen in in in physical form,
- 8:10Speaker 3: Oh boy, yeah, that's and it would not work without
- 8:14Speaker 3: Alison Bria Dave Franco. Of course they are married in
- 8:17Speaker 3: real life.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Oh I didn't know that.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah, And uh, and watching them play this couple really great,
- 8:23Speaker 3: really great chemistry, uh, for the two of them, and
- 8:26Speaker 3: it just they make it work.
- 8:28Speaker 1: That explains that.
- 8:29Speaker 2: There was a picture of them in the in the
- 8:30Speaker 2: news a couple of weeks ago.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Uh.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They were at a park, just you know, having a
- 8:35Speaker 2: picnic lunch seemingly, and he was, I don't know, reading
- 8:39Speaker 2: a book and she was clipping his toenails and it
- 8:43Speaker 2: was kind of icky.
- 8:46Speaker 1: That's not gonna kind of vicky.
- 8:48Speaker 2: They're on a plane and she's clipping his toenails while
- 8:51Speaker 2: they're and and somebody said, I believe this is a
- 8:54Speaker 2: publicity shot for the movie that they have coming out,
- 8:57Speaker 2: rather than them just really doing this.
- 8:59Speaker 3: No, I don't think so. I mean we we we
- 9:01Speaker 3: know what we know what publicity shot romances are. Like
- 9:05Speaker 3: look at look at Tom Cruise and an ad armis
- 9:08Speaker 3: right now, this is not that. Does anybody believe that
- 9:12Speaker 3: that is even a tiny bit real? Nobody believes don't.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Don't they know that nobody believes it?
- 9:19Speaker 3: No, they don't. They really think the off They don't
- 9:22Speaker 3: there they don't have people telling them again.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they're in a bubble.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Nobody's buying it. No, it's yes, mister Cruise. Yeah, all right,
- 9:29Speaker 4: So what do you give this one? Three and a half,
- 9:31Speaker 4: three and a half four together?
- 9:32Speaker 3: All right?
- 9:33Speaker 1: So next next week?
- 9:35Speaker 3: Next week, Freakyer Friday. I'm sorry, yeah, I hey, I
- 9:39Speaker 3: love the first one. The first one was a great movie.
- 9:42Speaker 1: You mean with the remake?
- 9:43Speaker 3: With the remake which well, I mean I like I
- 9:45Speaker 3: like the Hayley Mills too. But I'm sorry, Jodie Foster.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I was thinking Parent Trap. Yea, but Jamie, the Curtis
- 9:52Speaker 3: and Lindsay Lowan are back, and this time the uh
- 9:56Speaker 3: Lindsay's teen daughter and her soon to be teen stepdaughter
- 10:00Speaker 3: are in the mix, and yeah, it's all right, it
- 10:04Speaker 3: looks it looks to be fun. We're seeing it next.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Week, all right, that's it.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Yep. And then we missed out last week on talking
- 10:10Speaker 3: about Fantastic Four, which you like? I like that, I did.
- 10:15Speaker 3: I like to I like. I give it three stars.
- 10:17Speaker 3: That's solid, very solid. More more about the vibe and
- 10:22Speaker 3: the and the hangout than about the plot for me.
- 10:26Speaker 3: But I don't know what you thought of it.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I loved it.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I heard somebody talking about it on a podcast that
- 10:32Speaker 2: I listened to who said, I don't really have much
- 10:35Speaker 2: you know, we interested in Marvel movies.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Or I'm not a Marvel guy.
- 10:38Speaker 2: When I went to see this movie, just happened to
- 10:40Speaker 2: be there and went to see it. Said it was
- 10:42Speaker 2: just wonderful. I don't know anything really that much, even
- 10:44Speaker 2: about the Fantastic Four. It was a wonderful movie. And
- 10:48Speaker 2: he went on and on because of how the set,
- 10:50Speaker 2: you know, how it was set in the kind of
- 10:53Speaker 2: post or pre pre modern American.
- 10:55Speaker 3: It's essentially the third incredibleson he.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Said that too. He said, I'd like to live in
- 10:59Speaker 2: that world. It's a wonderful world.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yeah, well there you go.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Shaw means you can find him moviecricket dot net or
- 11:08Speaker 2: s l trib dot com.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Thanks Sean, Thank you.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Sean.
- 11:12Speaker 3: All right,
