- 1:22Speaker 4: me that question, don't you dare?
- 1:24Speaker 3: Ever?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well, then I just asked it again. That's that's what happened.
- 1:31Speaker 3: If you, if you ever asked me how I'm doing,
- 1:34Speaker 3: I swear to God we're gonna get into it.
- 1:36Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Listen, Leggie, we we heard that exchange in a Monday show.
- 1:41Speaker 3: In fact, that night I did a show A Coach
- 1:44Speaker 3: with Coach and d Mac and I couldn't believe it was.
- 1:48Speaker 2: You probably weren't shocked, Vic, after standing in a lot
- 1:51Speaker 2: of those rooms with me, But.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, I'm not shocked. But I was really upset.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I was upset for this reason. We saw a man
- 1:57Speaker 3: on the field that had to be stretched out, and
- 1:58Speaker 3: we obviously are all concerned and empathizing and sympathizing, and
- 2:02Speaker 3: I get it. He probably wanted to alert the family first, whatever,
- 2:06Speaker 3: but you're just exchanging information because people are genuinely concerned,
- 2:10Speaker 3: and his reaction to that genuine concern was out of pocket.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I didn't like it, and I have no problem. Sean
- 2:16Speaker 3: Payton known that that was ridiculous. Having that kind of
- 2:18Speaker 3: exchange about a man's injury is ridiculous. It's not about you, Sean,
- 2:22Speaker 3: It's about the God that got hurt. It's not about you.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I don't care if it's your press conference. It's about
- 2:27Speaker 3: the God that got hurt. That's my thought.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I guess I conveyed later that the
- 2:36Speaker 2: thought was, you know, sort of America saw this young
- 2:41Speaker 2: guy go out on the off the field on a backboard,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and you know that's you know, my job is to
- 2:47Speaker 2: get updates information and people can answer questions anyway they choose,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and you know, but to me that it's a pretty
- 2:57Speaker 2: low key exchange on my list of exchanges I've had
- 3:02Speaker 2: with head coaches over thirty eight years. But you know, again,
- 3:06Speaker 2: I just thought because of the appearance, the optics of
- 3:11Speaker 2: a you know, Tyler Baday going off the field on
- 3:14Speaker 2: a strap to a backboard after collapsing on the sideline,
- 3:19Speaker 2: that you know, telling people he was going to go
- 3:21Speaker 2: home on the plane or that he would be back
- 3:25Speaker 2: in Denver, you know later that night. I didn't think
- 3:28Speaker 2: was too much, But you know, that's I've always said,
- 3:33Speaker 2: you know, my job's to ask the questions and people
- 3:36Speaker 2: can answer them anyway. They choose Jeff.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Lagwe with a ESPN I com so to the game
- 3:42Speaker 4: LEGI look, I don't know who would have had, especially
- 3:46Speaker 4: after an zero to two start. The Broncs at five
- 3:48Speaker 4: hundred through four weeks. But what's your biggest takeaway from
- 3:52Speaker 4: the last couple And we can talk more specifically about
- 3:56Speaker 4: the Jets game, But is it just about this defense
- 3:59Speaker 4: and how good they are? What's the main takeaway for you?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean the defense has played four and o
- 4:05Speaker 2: good in my opinion, but that you know that it
- 4:10Speaker 2: is what's carried them. I mean they they have one
- 4:13Speaker 2: touchdown pass as a team, and they haven't run the
- 4:16Speaker 2: ball very well except for a couple of halves of games.
- 4:22Speaker 2: They're not doing much heavy lifting on offense. This is
- 4:25Speaker 2: decidedly a defensive effort, and you know it will be
- 4:30Speaker 2: difficult for any team to keep up the scoring defense
- 4:34Speaker 2: pace the Broncos have going right now. You know, thirteen
- 4:37Speaker 2: point eight in the NFL is you know the same
- 4:43Speaker 2: homecoming weekends. You know that's that's hard to do in
- 4:47Speaker 2: the NFL, keep anybody under twenty. Even so, they're they're
- 4:52Speaker 2: doing some stuff defensively. I think, you know, I think
- 4:56Speaker 2: Vans Joseph has done a really good job of mixing
- 5:03Speaker 2: a lot of things from you know, his time with
- 5:07Speaker 2: Wade Phillips. I see a lot of Wade Phillips's influences.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I know I've talked to Mike Sandford about it, but
- 5:15Speaker 2: you know there's there's Jim Leonard influences in there, the
- 5:19Speaker 2: new secondary coach, and that just tells you Vance is
- 5:24Speaker 2: something a really good coach needs to be. And that's
- 5:26Speaker 2: a good listener because I see a lot of influences
- 5:30Speaker 2: and I certainly see a lot of things Vance believes.
- 5:33Speaker 2: And they have nine different players with sacks right now,
- 5:37Speaker 2: and that's certainly something Vance Joseph believes in.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Like he's sticking with the theme, it is Mike Sanford,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm filling in formosure today. So
- 5:46Speaker 1: the show got dumber and a lot less cool, But
- 5:49Speaker 1: you just sticking with the theme of defense. With the
- 5:53Speaker 1: amount of pressures, particularly even six man seven man hits
- 5:57Speaker 1: cover zero has been it's showing up at a higher
- 6:00Speaker 1: rate than any other team in the National Football League.
- 6:03Speaker 1: The performance of the defensive backs in particular Riley Moss,
- 6:07Speaker 1: Patzertanu in Jakwan McMillan. What do you what do you
- 6:11Speaker 1: make of just that trust that Vance Joseph has in
- 6:14Speaker 1: them to play Manda Man coverage with no safety help
- 6:18Speaker 1: on a fairly high percentage of the snaps.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's a luxury. A lot of NFL
- 6:24Speaker 2: teams don't have Mike. I mean, you know, here's what
- 6:28Speaker 2: we see, here's my here's my awesome analysis of you know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: study pastser Tan's pretty damn good. And I think Riley
- 6:38Speaker 2: Moss is ahead of schedule, really competitive player. And I've
- 6:44Speaker 2: always felt if you're going to be the corner opposite
- 6:47Speaker 2: the alpha, the biggest thing attribute you can have is competitiveness,
- 6:55Speaker 2: because you just you just can't get bothered by what happened,
- 7:00Speaker 2: And no matter how much you'd like to be bothered
- 7:03Speaker 2: by it, or how much a normal person would be
- 7:05Speaker 2: bothered by it, you can't get bothered by it. And
- 7:09Speaker 2: Riley Moss is competitive, he's tough, he's athletic. I mean,
- 7:14Speaker 2: that is a that's a quality draft find for them.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And McMillan is one of the best nickel corners in
- 7:21Speaker 2: the league. So they have probably the best corner, one
- 7:26Speaker 2: of the best nickel corners, and they have one of
- 7:29Speaker 2: the best young corners in the league. And that gives
- 7:34Speaker 2: you the luxury if you're vance Joseph to play a
- 7:37Speaker 2: lot of the cover zero because you feel like you
- 7:39Speaker 2: can match up because the number one receiver, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 2: for the opposition needs a you know, basically the route
- 7:49Speaker 2: of his life on every play to get the ball.
- 7:52Speaker 2: And unless patch Er ten makes a mistake, and he's human,
- 7:55Speaker 2: he'll make one or two. But they really have a
- 8:00Speaker 2: luxury a lot of teams don't have, and it really
- 8:04Speaker 2: sort of reflects, you know, what football is right now.
- 8:08Speaker 2: If you don't have corners like that, you're really going
- 8:11Speaker 2: to struggle to play defense in the league and it's
- 8:14Speaker 2: a difficult position to get that many people that you
- 8:18Speaker 2: feel comfortable with.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Legy I think these next two home games are huge,
- 8:23Speaker 3: monumentally huge for various reasons, primarily the fact that you're
- 8:26Speaker 3: playing two division rivals, you're tied with those rivals, you
- 8:30Speaker 3: have a chance to take a leg up. You're playing
- 8:32Speaker 3: a team this week that you haven't beaten in eight tries.
- 8:34Speaker 3: It's been four years. My question to you is what
- 8:38Speaker 3: happened to the Broncos home field advantage when it was
- 8:41Speaker 3: truly an advantage. Even the Bronco teams of yesteryear that were,
- 8:45Speaker 3: you know, mediocre, they always won it home. You always
- 8:48Speaker 3: had that assurance home games were like, Okay, don't worry
- 8:51Speaker 3: about it, they're at home. That's gone. What happened to that?
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah, they got I think about that a lot, because
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, I'm like you, It used to be even
- 9:04Speaker 2: average Bronco teams would be you know, five and three
- 9:09Speaker 2: at home back in the sixteen game schedule years. I
- 9:13Speaker 2: think my opinion is they've wasted a lot of not
- 9:21Speaker 2: awesome defensive efforts, but good defensive efforts they've wasted over
- 9:26Speaker 2: the years because it's been a long time since they've
- 9:29Speaker 2: been a consistent offense that sort of knew what it was.
- 9:34Speaker 2: I year after year and even this year, I see
- 9:39Speaker 2: Bronco offenses sort of not play to who they are,
- 9:43Speaker 2: you know, and I've said it, and I know people
- 9:46Speaker 2: are probably sick of it, but this is yet another
- 9:50Speaker 2: year where they're playing offense the way they wish they
- 9:53Speaker 2: were instead of what they are, and I think that's
- 9:58Speaker 2: why the home field advantage is gone. I feel like
- 10:02Speaker 2: Mike Shanahan's Broncos teams and Gary Kobiax and even you know,
- 10:07Speaker 2: back to Dan Reeves. I think those teams played to
- 10:10Speaker 2: who they were, what their roster was, what they could
- 10:14Speaker 2: do best, and I don't always feel that way over
- 10:18Speaker 2: the last eight years of offenses the Broncos have put
- 10:22Speaker 2: on the field.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Javante entered that game last week averaging two yards to carry,
- 10:27Speaker 4: and then he had sixteen carries for twenty two yards.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Did he find something last week?
- 10:33Speaker 2: Like the Broncos Final was something? I mean, you know,
- 10:37Speaker 2: I'm an old man. I like duo in the run game.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I like you know, inside tosses. I liked, you know,
- 10:45Speaker 2: the inside zone plays. I think they had more things
- 10:52Speaker 2: that he does better, Like we were just talking about
- 10:54Speaker 2: just play to what you can do better, and he
- 10:57Speaker 2: was more decisive when they ran those plays. I think
- 11:00Speaker 2: it was a combination of both. It was like, hey,
- 11:03Speaker 2: I have a comfort level with this, and he was
- 11:08Speaker 2: far more decisive in those plays. Now you know, I
- 11:11Speaker 2: charted it and I haven't added it up. If some
- 11:14Speaker 2: of it may be anecdotal or it might be full
- 11:16Speaker 2: of crap, but it just felt like they were doing
- 11:19Speaker 2: more of those power looks on the interior and they're
- 11:24Speaker 2: better at that than they are pushing it to the perimeter.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Leggy, I'm actually looking at the stats right now, and
- 11:30Speaker 1: right now, the Broncos are fourth in the NFL and
- 11:33Speaker 1: rushing yards over expected plus forty four when running in
- 11:37Speaker 1: between the tackles, and then conversely when running outside the
- 11:41Speaker 1: tight end surface twenty fifth at negative thirty one yards
- 11:45Speaker 1: rushing yards over expected. And it's so interesting to think
- 11:48Speaker 1: about the interior pass game, excuse me, the interior run game,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and also contrasting that versus what maybe Sean Payton is
- 11:57Speaker 1: going to want to do in terms of face sing
- 12:00Speaker 1: a Raiders defense that's twenty second in the league in
- 12:03Speaker 1: pass efficiency on the defensive side of the ball. Can
- 12:06Speaker 1: Sean Payton lean into the success that it found in
- 12:09Speaker 1: the second half to make the I guess the next
- 12:14Speaker 1: right decision to get to three and two?
- 12:16Speaker 2: And want to know in your division, Well, if you know,
- 12:20Speaker 2: it's certainly helped the Broncos mic if if Max Crosby
- 12:23Speaker 2: didn't play, he's he's spent a nightmare for them over
- 12:28Speaker 2: the past few years. But I you know yet, uh,
- 12:33Speaker 2: I you know again, it's only a year. In four
- 12:36Speaker 2: games but I consistently have seen Sean Payton leave the
- 12:40Speaker 2: running game during games because it's you know, I just
- 12:43Speaker 2: feel like he's trying to get to a lot of
- 12:47Speaker 2: the other things on the play sheet that he wants
- 12:49Speaker 2: to get to. So I, you know, I don't often
- 12:53Speaker 2: see with him, and just in my limited time watching
- 12:58Speaker 2: his offense, but I would often see Shanahan and Kubiak
- 13:04Speaker 2: just pound the same plays as a defense until they
- 13:07Speaker 2: figured out a way to stop them. I don't think
- 13:10Speaker 2: these Broncos always do that, and sometimes I think that
- 13:13Speaker 2: lets the defense off the hook. They did it a
- 13:16Speaker 2: little more in New York because out of necessity, you know,
- 13:20Speaker 2: would they have looked that way on a sunny day.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I have my doubts. So I think that's the question
- 13:27Speaker 2: if at least until a rookie quarterback gets his feat
- 13:33Speaker 2: under him. And I don't have any idea why the
- 13:36Speaker 2: Broncos seemed to be in such a rush to sort
- 13:39Speaker 2: of prove bo Nicks is not like other rookie quarterbacks
- 13:43Speaker 2: instead of just giving him some help. And how they're
- 13:47Speaker 2: calling games, and what you're saying is how would really
- 13:50Speaker 2: help him? Is you know, even if runs are stinky
- 13:55Speaker 2: from time to time. Just keep pounding it in there.
- 13:57Speaker 2: You've proven it can work if you just hang in
- 14:01Speaker 2: there with it a little bit.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Leggy, Can I interest you in my top five games
- 14:06Speaker 3: of Broncos Raiders lore, complete with some NFL films music
- 14:10Speaker 3: behind the scenes. Interested in that at all? I can
- 14:13Speaker 3: give you a quick rendition.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Certainly, vic I love you. Would you remember when, all.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Right, somebody hit the commercial break and we'll get to.
- 14:21Speaker 4: That right, exactly right. Jeff Owys appreciate the time.
