- 0:00Welcome to the Bearcat chat, a podcast for everything
- 0:04Scottsbluff School. Hi everyone, I'm Melissa price
- 0:14and welcome to the Bearcat chat, the podcast about everything
- 0:17Scottsbluff schools. I'm here at Scottsville high
- 0:20school and it's that magical time that we all look forward to
- 0:24here at the high school. Each year.
- 0:26It's musical time. And this year should be, no
- 0:29exception is the high school is preparing a production that will
- 0:32not disappoint. This year's musical will be the
- 0:36tony-winning classic, The Sound of Music and I'm very pleased to
- 0:40have some of our cast members as my I guess for this episode.
- 0:43So we'll the three of you, please introduce yourselves, and
- 0:46let me know what grade you're in.
- 0:48I am Grandpa nay. I am a senior.
- 0:52My name is Liz Foose. I am also a senior.
- 0:55My name is Lauren Johnson and I'm a junior.
- 0:57No, he will. I'm really glad to have you.
- 1:00So each of you is a different member of the cast, why don't
- 1:03each of you? Tell me a little bit about what
- 1:06character you're going to be playing.
- 1:08Um so I play Uncle, Maximilian Detweiler first, Secretary of
- 1:15the Ministry of Education and culture, that's a line from the
- 1:19show but I play Uncle. He's in the movie, and he
- 1:24actually has less of a role in the movie than he does in the
- 1:28stage version, which I think is really interesting.
- 1:31That is really interesting. What about you?
- 1:33I play baroness also Schrader. She also has a larger role in
- 1:38the musical than she does in the movie her and Max kind of
- 1:42conspire together. It's really fun.
- 1:46Oh, I play the mother abbess, and I kind of feel like the
- 1:50amount of screen or stage time is pretty consistent between the
- 1:56movie and the stage version, but I'm well, the like the
- 2:02religious. I preside over everybody in the
- 2:05Abbey, basically, and I kind of Mentor Maria through her journey
- 2:10in The Sound of Music. Okay.
- 2:13So it sounds like what I'm hearing from all of you is that
- 2:16for people who are familiar with the movie, The Stage production
- 2:19is going to be a little different and they're going to
- 2:21see something a little bit different.
- 2:23Yeah yeah yeah totally. There's like some flip-flops
- 2:25songs like goatherd happens after favorite things when
- 2:33Favorite Things is the favorite things in the movie, is saying
- 2:36in the bedroom during the thunderstorm, but they sing the
- 2:38lonely goatherd there in the stage version.
- 2:40And Favorite Things is actually a duet between the mother abbess
- 2:43and Maria before she leaves to go to the Von Trapp house.
- 2:49Okay, well that ought to keep things exciting for the audience
- 2:51so they get to see something a little bit different.
- 2:55I understand that in the addition to the high school cast
- 2:58that we have put together. We also have some Elementary
- 3:01Three students on the cast or playing the Von Trapp children,
- 3:04right? Younger ones.
- 3:06So tell me what working with the elementary school students has
- 3:08been. Like, they are so much fun and
- 3:12they're doing so good with their roles.
- 3:14They're really confident with their lines.
- 3:16They're just so fun to be around and they really connect with the
- 3:19cast, which is awesome. Yeah, can I share a story?
- 3:22Sure, no worries. I was there was this one scene
- 3:27that I had in practice the lines for like at home all that much.
- 3:31And then I went out to save my lines and I blanked on one of
- 3:35them, and then one of the kids was like, oh, you're next line
- 3:38is this, and I was like, you know, my lines as well as your
- 3:41own and I don't even have mine down yet.
- 3:44Oh my dick, you always loved that so much.
- 3:47I love this venue your lines, that's great.
- 3:51And I don't think people realize, I mean, unless you've
- 3:55been in the musical which I know, you know, a lot of our
- 3:58community members that come sometimes their alumni and
- 4:01they've done. On those things but I don't
- 4:02think unless you've been in it, people realize how much work
- 4:05just goes into the production so many long hours of practice and
- 4:09it's not just the cast. There's a lot of crew members
- 4:12that it's just as well. So tell me about some of the
- 4:15jobs that other students who aren't cast members are working
- 4:18on right now for the production. So there's a variety of cruise,
- 4:23we have our like more techie Cruise like lights and sound,
- 4:29and there's a set crew. And then you Some of them more
- 4:33like there, they work more with the actors themselves with like,
- 4:39makeup and costume and I know with makeup, they have to be
- 4:44there as early, if not earlier than the cast on production days
- 4:48because they have to get the stations set up.
- 4:51And I'm kind of just talking about makeup crew with the most.
- 4:54Because that's one that I have personal experience with my
- 4:57freshman year, freshman were not allowed in the cast because we
- 5:00had just come out of And so Roni was trying to cut down the cast
- 5:04and so he didn't love freshman. And so I did makeup crew.
- 5:06And I'm kind of just stuck with that for last year as a
- 5:10sophomore and this year as a Junior, I've still been doing
- 5:13that in addition to being in the cast so I can kind of talk about
- 5:15that one in a little bit more depth than the others.
- 5:19Yeah, that's a lot of work. I know I went to a smaller high
- 5:23school and I didn't we didn't have a big production like this.
- 5:26We did one act competition play. But for whatever reason, when I
- 5:30was in high school, which I see you mrs.
- 5:32Hurt. She was our, she was my Drama
- 5:35teacher. I always seem to get Typecast
- 5:38into an older person which meant I had to come before everyone
- 5:42else and have like the extra hour of makeup put on and it
- 5:46just adds so much time. People have no idea.
- 5:50The, you know, that every every dress rehearsal, every time you
- 5:53compete, every public performance, you got to go and
- 5:57you know, get 10 pounds of makeup put on your face.
- 6:00So I'm it just sounds like there's a whole lot of different
- 6:03jobs that says you guys have a really great Cruise supporting
- 6:06you. So that's really awesome.
- 6:09Something else that I always really enjoy with all the
- 6:12Productions throughout the years, or the sets how much work
- 6:16has gone into creating the sets this year.
- 6:18Here the we normally have the Ohio's, do our sets and I think
- 6:25a massive amount of work has gone into it because I did set
- 6:30crew my freshman year. So I know kind of especially
- 6:35with like bricks. There's a specific way that you
- 6:39have to do bricks where you have like a chalk string and you have
- 6:42to snap it against the like plywood sheet, and then you have
- 6:46them like, trim it down and Paint it and then that's just
- 6:50one wall. and like, I know the awhi owes spend so long after
- 6:56school, Like, I don't even know the hours either of, you know,
- 7:01like the amount of hours they wouldn't like, throughout their
- 7:04whole experience working with the high school, they've made
- 7:08some amazing sets. Yeah, I would completely agree.
- 7:12We're really fortunate, you know, to have them partner with
- 7:15us to be able to, you know, bring these beautiful sets.
- 7:18It really make the Productions kind of comes alive.
- 7:21So this year, your, we chose a musical here in shs.
- 7:25That's really a classic. And I think Ink it comes to
- 7:28embody what people come to expect when they watch a
- 7:31musical. When you think of a musical, the
- 7:32sound of music is one of the first ones that pops in your
- 7:35head. And I don't think it's possible
- 7:37to talk about the sound of music without talking.
- 7:38Of course, about the music. I feel like people have never
- 7:42watched the play or aren't familiar with the story will
- 7:45recognize some of the musical numbers.
- 7:47So, tell me each of you, what's your favorite musical number in
- 7:50the show? Starting from me.
- 7:55So I think one of my favorite, Physical numbers is no way to
- 8:01stop it. That one doesn't appear in the
- 8:03movie because it's a kind of Trio.
- 8:07Song between Captain, Von Trapp. Me and Elsa and it's in Act 2.
- 8:17So it's like Elsa and I trying to tell the captain to put aside
- 8:23his differences and try to work. And tried and not be ousted by
- 8:29the Nazi regime. So it's like kind of a bad guy
- 8:34moment for Elsa and I, but it's also a really fun song, and I
- 8:38think people are really going to enjoy it.
- 8:41I definitely agree with Grant. It's so much fun.
- 8:44We get a little Tango moment. We we it's it's really fun.
- 8:50Oh, I'd say that's probably definitely the most fun song in
- 8:54that show. I think the favorite one that I
- 8:57saying is probably Climb Every Mountain.
- 8:59I mean, it's a classic. It's just kind of fun to really
- 9:04bring out the technique and you sing that last out really great.
- 9:11High notes. Are the Ender.
- 9:12Really fun. Well, I love these answers.
- 9:15I love that you didn't hit me with like maybe what I was
- 9:18expecting to hear what your maybe the more common ones, you
- 9:21know, like my favorite things or whatever, you know, but you hear
- 9:24a lot of that even outside of the production.
- 9:27So and I will be looking forward to the Tango moment.
- 9:31So is there anything about this year's production that you think
- 9:35maybe sets it apart from other musicals?
- 9:38Maybe other musicals you guys have done while you've been here
- 9:40in shs? Or other times we've done this
- 9:43story, I guess what I'm asking you is what about your talents
- 9:47as a cast, you think, is going to make this unique and special.
- 9:50So this musical doesn't have as much dancing as the last two
- 9:56that we've done. Since our grant nice freshman
- 9:59year. West Side Story got canceled but
- 10:03Oklahoma was so much fun and big fish was so much fun, and this
- 10:08one is just amazing. So much fun.
- 10:11But I think the biggest difference is definitely the
- 10:14dancing, it's more of a serious story because it's like it's
- 10:22real things that have happened. Compared to big fish and
- 10:27Oklahoma. Yeah, I feel like this
- 10:32performance is going to be different from other ones and I
- 10:36mean the similarities between all the performances we've done
- 10:40is most of our years. We've done classic musicals all
- 10:44except for big fish, which was more recently written musical.
- 10:49So we've done like West Side Story and Oklahoma and now Sound
- 10:55of Music which are all like super well-known older
- 11:00Performances. But this is my first year
- 11:04playing a like lead role because last year during Big Fish, I was
- 11:08just Ensemble and supporting cast members.
- 11:13So Red Fang, the poisonous address.
- 11:18And hot-headed shotgun toder. Well, do you think you that
- 11:25there's any dual I'm going to give you a little bit of a
- 11:27chance here. You think there's anyone that's
- 11:31on the cast or whatever? That's going to surprise.
- 11:33Anyone is there anyone just out there just killing it at their
- 11:36role that, you know, you want to say, I think you should come
- 11:40because you really just have to see this Riley Riley.
- 11:44Definitely, Riley. I Barrow.
- 11:45He plays Captain Von Trapp and he came straight from sound.
- 11:50Like he was in the booth in the back, just operating
- 11:52microphones. For all the other years that
- 11:54he's been in choir and apart of the musical.
- 11:57And now he's the lead role like in the show.
- 12:02I mean, other than Maria but yeah, like he's like the second
- 12:06biggest character than this entire Musical and he came
- 12:08straight from like just a tech crew which is amazing and he's
- 12:14been doing so well and I love seeing him when he gets the
- 12:17moments where he's acting because he's really talented.
- 12:21I'd say like before like Kid kids in the cast there are so
- 12:27amazing. I've worked with a few of them
- 12:30before three of them have been and toffee with me theater
- 12:33opportunities for you. Through Theater West, two of
- 12:36them were my toffee dancers. And one of them who also Downey,
- 12:39she was one of my dancers that I worked with, she like was so
- 12:43quiet during the summer. And then once we got to Sound of
- 12:47Music, He just really came out of her shell and was like, so
- 12:51sassy. And I did not expect that.
- 12:53From her. But they've really grown and
- 12:58they've been doing a really good job of projecting and not
- 13:01upstaging themselves and Ava, the one who plays our Gretel,
- 13:06she is so loud, but it's so good.
- 13:09Like she could, I'd say out project.
- 13:11Anybody in the cast? Yeah she has a really big voice
- 13:14for such a little little girl. Yes.
- 13:17Well, the these are amazing Stories and I'm so glad that I
- 13:21had the opportunity for you to share them with me.
- 13:24I think these are the, these are the things that will make the
- 13:26production memorable for all of you, even when it's all over.
- 13:30And, you know, and a lot of you are seniors, you kind of, you
- 13:33know, you get to the end of the school year kind of dispersed
- 13:35after this, but I think it's those kind of things that are
- 13:37going to you know really make this special and something that
- 13:40you'll remember for a long time. So there you have it.
- 13:43Can I get one last reminder about when the show is and how
- 13:48people can get tickets. So the matinees for the
- 13:52elementary middle schools will be on the 12th of April.
- 13:54And I'm show will be on the 13th through 15th at 7 o'clock in the
- 14:00evening. Yeah.
- 14:01And that it when you add in those Elementary matinees, I'm
- 14:04assuming you're still doing them to a day like they bring
- 14:07traditionally done in the past that can be kind of, kind of a
- 14:10grueling schedule. So, you know, you're gonna have
- 14:13a big week ahead of you. So how how can people buy
- 14:17tickets if they want you Roni.com if they want to order
- 14:22them online? Don't they also sell tickets at
- 14:25the door if spot. Yeah tickets.
- 14:27I believe are generally sold at the box office if you don't sell
- 14:30out, but they are, you guys are running a discount to buy them
- 14:34online through April first ever Oni.com.
- 14:37So that would be my recommendation.
- 14:39For those of you out there to just hop on there, you can kind
- 14:42of choose your seeds, get, you know, get the night and get the
- 14:45one that you want. But there should be some
- 14:46available at the box office as long as we don't sell out.
- 14:50So one last thing before we wrap up, if you Listen to my podcast.
- 14:54You know that I usually try to hit everyone with a little bit
- 14:56of a wild card question, when you're not, yeah, when you're
- 14:59not expecting, don't worry. It's not too bad.
- 15:01But prior to auditioning for this production, had you seen
- 15:07The Sound of Music? Have you watched the movie or I
- 15:09had you watched a production of it?
- 15:14Should we go from me? Yeah, I don't know, I had
- 15:18watched the movie but I had never seen a Stage production so
- 15:22I did not know how different it was.
- 15:27Yeah. And I mean I was the only one to
- 15:30audition for Max and I did that even though I only knew the
- 15:36movie where he had such a little roll of but then I was really
- 15:41surprised to know that he was so much bigger but character in the
- 15:44stage version so I kind of lucked out I had also seen the
- 15:49movie, Never the stage version, which we watched it during
- 15:53class. And once I got my role and we
- 15:57watched it, I was like, wow, I'm so excited to play this role.
- 16:01I can't wait. And now that it's here, I'm so
- 16:05excited. Oh my goodness.
- 16:07It's it's gonna be so much fun. Seems like our stories are kind
- 16:11of all the same because I also had watched the movie, but not
- 16:14the stage version. I kind of grew up on the movie,
- 16:17but I I haven't seen it all the way through since I was probably
- 16:19like 10 so it's been a minute. But yeah, I just love the story
- 16:25and Julie Andrews, really brings like this really cool light to
- 16:30Maria. Well I guess this is the part
- 16:33where I have to confess something to all of you.
- 16:36I have not seen this Stage production that I have watched
- 16:39the movie, but not all of it. I've never watched it all the
- 16:42way through. So I'm really glad that we
- 16:45didn't really talk about anything where there's a need.
- 16:47Whalers involved. I'm pretty sure I watched it
- 16:49sort of the way you guys did like maybe in class, but then
- 16:52we, you know, it was right before a vacation or you like
- 16:56school break and we never got through it.
- 16:58So I never got to see how it ended.
- 17:00So I really need to come and watch the Stage production and
- 17:03maybe see how it ends, but I think one thing we can agree is
- 17:07not a spoiler is that it's going to be a terrific show.
- 17:09So thank you to everyone for listening.
- 17:12Thank you so much for being my guest today and I will see
- 17:16everyone next episode. Code.
