- 0:00Speaker 1: Sean is one of those, like Jim here in the
- 0:02Speaker 1: inbox that says, do we get a refund here for
- 0:05Speaker 1: going to Wrigley and not seeing a volleyball match? You
- 0:07Speaker 1: going to get that Ven mode back to you?
- 0:09Speaker 2: Take it away, guys. Hey, guys. Good morning from O'Hare
- 0:13Speaker 2: Airport area. I got to basically watch the Savannah Bananas
- 0:15Speaker 2: twice this year because that's about what it turned into
- 0:18Speaker 2: last night at Wrigley. 43,067 fans in attendance. the largest
- 0:24Speaker 2: crowd at Wrigley for a game in well over 10,
- 0:27Speaker 2: 15 years for any sport. So from that standpoint, it
- 0:30Speaker 2: was an unbelievable experience. But clearly, they just didn't think
- 0:35Speaker 2: through some of the things that they dealt with in
- 0:37Speaker 2: this game, and there was no way to play this thing.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I think the humidity and the moisture on the court,
- 0:42Speaker 2: as you guys watched on TV, it just wasn't happening
- 0:46Speaker 2: to get this match in last night.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it was very dangerous for the players. You
- 0:50Speaker 1: certainly couldn't do any backslides, and you certainly couldn't You know,
- 0:54Speaker 1: if you're going to create the kind of elevation that
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Nebraska athletes do at the net, that's really risky.
- 1:02Speaker 1: You could come down and tear an ACL, and then
- 1:04Speaker 1: you're out for the year. Danny Busboom-Kelly hinted about her
- 1:09Speaker 1: misgivings about this some time ago, Scott and Sean, and
- 1:14Speaker 1: her worst fears came to fruition. You can't be playing
- 1:18Speaker 1: indoor sports outdoors very often and stay lucky.
- 1:22Speaker 2: No, it's a gamble, and this was a, you know,
- 1:26Speaker 2: this was not Nebraska's decision or choice to play this match.
- 1:29Speaker 2: The Big Ten set this up with the SEC and Fox,
- 1:33Speaker 2: and it was a great idea, filled Rayleigh Field, but
- 1:36Speaker 2: it wasn't like Nebraska organized this. I mean, the television
- 1:40Speaker 2: partners in the conference put this together, and I don't
- 1:44Speaker 2: know if Nebraska had a choice, one or the other,
- 1:46Speaker 2: and everybody saw Volleyball Day in Nebraska four years ago
- 1:50Speaker 2: and thought, hey, we can recreate that and You kind
- 1:53Speaker 2: of need the perfect storm, I think, as we know,
- 1:55Speaker 2: with the weather and the wind to get something like that. Unfortunately,
- 2:01Speaker 2: this wasn't meant to be. I've been to multiple Cubs games, guys,
- 2:04Speaker 2: and I've never seen Wrigley so crowded. You could not
- 2:08Speaker 2: move in this place. It was incredible to see Nebraska
- 2:12Speaker 2: fans out here at this number.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the new thing, to be a Husker volleyball fan.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And there are thousands and thousands of them all over
- 2:20Speaker 1: the country now, not just in Nebraska, but everywhere else.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Chicago has a significant contingent of Nebraskans, as does Missouri.
- 2:27Speaker 1: It's one of their largest alumni out of the state
- 2:29Speaker 1: alumni bases. So it was a good idea, but you
- 2:33Speaker 1: can't be playing indoor sports outdoors very often. Let's talk
- 2:36Speaker 1: about the football game. Your overall, I thought Donovan Jones
- 2:40Speaker 1: had the best game of any Husker. What say you?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought he was one of those guys. I mean,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Jamal Rule, to me, is where I'd probably go. Just
- 2:49Speaker 2: one of the best true freshman games we've seen at
- 2:52Speaker 2: the running back position for an opener, especially. But Jones
- 2:57Speaker 2: was a bright... I thought the secondary in general. I
- 2:58Speaker 2: thought Victor Evans looked good when he was in there.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I thought Andrew Marshall... Those guys played on the up front,
- 3:04Speaker 2: kind of a different story. They didn't get home with
- 3:06Speaker 2: their pass rush with the four-man front very often. That
- 3:11Speaker 2: is something the next couple of weeks that needs to
- 3:13Speaker 2: get tuned up more, but lots of positives from the offense.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I think it's easy in week one to have a
- 3:19Speaker 2: lot of overreactions, but if you just watch college football,
- 3:22Speaker 2: there were a lot of sloppy, ugly games where Teams
- 3:26Speaker 2: that were supposed to win by more started out slow,
- 3:28Speaker 2: just like Nebraska did. You saw Nebraska pull out and
- 3:33Speaker 2: cover the spread, which I don't think at a point
- 3:35Speaker 2: of the fourth quarter people thought was even a possibility.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So the finish of outscoring Ohio 42-8 down the stretch
- 3:44Speaker 2: was really, really.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Good to see. We have just a little bit of
- 3:47Speaker 1: time left, Sean, but get your take on the Michigan-Western
- 3:50Speaker 1: Michigan episode. We're now hearing people that are experienced in
- 3:54Speaker 1: camera operators and have been involved in the syncing up
- 3:58Speaker 1: of the game clock with the TV cameras. The Big
- 4:01Speaker 1: Ten has a secret clock that nobody sees but them.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Do you think there's any more fallout from this episode,
- 4:06Speaker 1: or is it done?
- 4:10Speaker 2: I think everyone will move on from the Western Michigan side.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I don't know what they have to get. They want
- 4:14Speaker 2: to keep getting the checks from the Big Ten. I mean,
- 4:16Speaker 2: that's the unfortunate part of the business model of college football.
- 4:19Speaker 2: The MAAC conference gets these million to $ 2 million checks
- 4:24Speaker 2: to play these games, and those checks are what fund
- 4:26Speaker 2: their department. And, you know, I think this thing will
- 4:30Speaker 2: probably go away. But, yeah, I was stunned. We've lived
- 4:34Speaker 2: through this before with Nebraska versus Texas, but that one
- 4:37Speaker 2: was pretty clear in the Big 12 title game. I mean,
- 4:39Speaker 2: the clock should have had a second left, even though
- 4:42Speaker 2: we don't agree as Nebraskans. But this one, like, it
- 4:45Speaker 2: looked like it was done. And then all of a
- 4:47Speaker 2: sudden some secret clock that nobody knew existed said differently.
- 4:51Speaker 1: All right, bud. Safe travels back. We'll talk to you tomorrow.
- 4:53Speaker 1: That's the Husker Buzz report with Sean Callahan.
