- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Today we have a lot to get to.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: We're going to give you guys an update on what's going on in the WNBA finals, go through some of the biggest results and stories from the early week in the NBA.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I'm going to touch on the English Premier League and the MLS and give you guys a quick soccer update before we do our weekly college football recap slash preview episode where we will get to our tail, the tailgate picks.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: So let's get started.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Let's start in the WNBA.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Ladies first, you know, game three was all a dream.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Angel Reese powered Atlanta in their first game at home with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: The Golden State Valkyrie shot just 35% and 65% from the free throw line in game three, where the dream took a two-game to one lead.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Game four was more to the Valkyrie style of play, though.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Atlanta was limited to just 62 total points, and Golden State forced 18 Atlanta turnovers.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Despite Atlanta outscoring Golden State by nearly 11 in the second half, the first half shooting struggles were too much to overcome, and Golden State took Game 4 to even this series at two games apiece with a final score of 67 to 62.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Game five was more of the same.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Atlanta shot a horrible, horrible 29%, and Golden State took a three-point halftime lead and grew that in the second half to get to the doorstep.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: One went away from their first WNBA title in just their second ever season of having a franchise.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Game six and potential finals clincher will take place Thursday, October 29th at 12:30 in the afternoon.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And know that is not a mistake.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: That is really when that game is taking place due to scheduling conflicts surrounding State Farm Arena.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Kind of ridiculous, honestly, if you ask me.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: The WNBA and the NBA not able to get on the same page here.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: It seems like one of those games could have been moved to a different day, most likely the NBA game.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: But scheduling conflict be as it may, that game will take place at 12:30.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So in the event that the Valkyries win that title on Thursday, they're actually going to have to evacuate the court and celebrate in the Hawks practice facility, which I don't think I've ever heard of anything like that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: It is quite ridiculous.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: But like I said, Golden State is one game away from winning a WNBA title in just their second season.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: As I predicted, heading into this series, that defense has carried Golden State.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It has been the best defense in the WNBA all season.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: It has not changed so far in this series as they are one game away from bringing a title to the bay.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Let's go over to the men's side in the association.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: The Oklahoma City Thunder, they've started the season just the way they left off last regular season, ripping off four straight wins to start the season, allowing the fewest points in the NBA at 100.8 per game.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: However, on Sunday, in their game against Clippers, star forward Jalen Williams had to be carted off the court.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: A pretty gruesome ankle and or foot injury.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Horrible news there for Jalen Williams.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: The good news is they have depth.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: They have AJ Mitchell, they have Jared McCain, Kasen Wallace, and a day Mara.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: All of those guys, as Nate Smith and I talked about in our NBA preview episode, were going to be counted on in depth roles anyway for the Thunder this year.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: But now those guys are all going to have to step up.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Most likely AJ Mitchell in that scoring role to replace what Jalen Williams does.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: There's no replicating what Jalen Williams does.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: He's one of the best players in the NBA, but they can recreate him through what they have on the bench.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: The biggest offseason storyline for everybody heading into this season was obviously the Philadelphia 76ers.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Um, they've started really strong, three wins in four games.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Um the offense has been great, led by Tyrese Maxie, who's averaging 28.8 points per game.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: They have such a versatile array of different lineups and combinations of guys that they can throw at other teams, whether it's taking LeBron off the court, having Embiid and Maxie run the pick and roll together, um, putting Edgecombe and Maxie on the court together, and letting two ball handlers kind of work off of each other.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: And also Jalen Brown and Embiid have found a kind of nice duo back and forth with each other.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: They're just a really hard team to defend, and they have a lot of depth, actually.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Dean Wade, Anthony Simons, um just to name a few.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, that Sixers team has gotten off to a good start, and they haven't had to ask a whole lot from all of their supporting players to this point, as they've been able to stay healthy through the first week.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: The Lakers are also off to an undefeated start.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: They're 3-0.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Luca has been absolutely electric in this revamp Lakers lineup, and Sunday was a testament to that.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: He scored 52 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: He was two rebounds away from a 52-point triple-double in just 38 minutes against the Utah Jazz.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Austin Reeves has played pretty well for them, but the real story to me has been big man, their offseason trade acquisition centerpiece, former Utah Jazz, Walker Kessler.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: He's looked like a tremendous fit.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I thought coming into the season that that offense would look good.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Um, Luca and Walker in that pick and roll together.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Walker so far on the season averaging 16.7 points per game and eight rebounds.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: The offense looked good, as I also predicted on that uh NBA season preview, but the defense still gives me some hesitation.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: So we need to see this defense continue to play well against the better teams that they will start facing in the Western Conference.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: One of the best and brightest stories so far this season has been the Minnesota Timberwolves.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: The combination of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo ball has looked very natural.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Lamello taking a secondary role to Anthony Edwards, who is currently second in the NBA in points behind Luca.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: They began the season with two road wins in the state of Florida over the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic before also winning their home opener on Saturday against the Toronto Raptors.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: They dropped their last game in a just a two-point road loss at Cleveland.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: But the three and one starts great.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: That's great for the Timberwolves.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: But there was some breaking news that came out just a few hours before I started recording this podcast.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And that is the news that Anthony Edwards is going to miss multiple months with a arthroscopic knee surgery.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: So um unsure when exactly that took place, but obviously a devastating blow to the Timberwolves regular season hopes.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I don't think this is gonna derail them.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: I think this makes the acquisition of Lil' Mellon Ball even more critical to what is gonna happen for them.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: He's going to have to move out of that secondary role that I was just talking about and take over more of a primary scoring role.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Ao DeSuma is another guy that's gonna have to step up, but ultimately a massive loss.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: There's no, you know, there's no cutting that.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: When you lose one of the best players in the NBA, it's going to affect things, and that is just not a good piece of news if you're a Timberwolves fan.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Speaking of bad news, I have to go on a bit of a rant about my Miami Heat.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: They are 0-4 to start the season.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: They have lost three games at home to the aforementioned Minnesota Timberwolves, to the Detroit Pistons, and just on Monday night to the Dallas Mavericks.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: They also lost a close road game at Charlotte.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: The defense has been paper, paper thin.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Charmin soft.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Bam out of bio.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: What are you doing?
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Where are you?
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: You scored 83 points in a game last year.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: You're not even playing like one of our best two players.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: One of our best three players.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Bobby Portis is showing you up.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: What's going on?
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Unacceptable start of the season for Eric Spulter.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: The worst start for the Miami Heat since 2007, the year after the Heat won the title.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Normal hangover, you know, to start a season, much like the Knicks are going through right now, is they are also 0-3, but a horrendous nightmarish start for the Giannis tenure in Miami.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: They have to turn things around very, very soon, or things need to change with that team.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: A quick note on rookie Yaxel Lindenberg, the rookie out of the University of Michigan who battled back and forth with Luca on uh Thursday night last week.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: He was really getting into Luca's face, giving him everything he could handle.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: He has emerged as the rookie of the year odds leader after just a week of games.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: He had an incredible game over the weekend with 30 points.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: He's averaging 21.8 points per game, 9.33 rebounds per game, and 4.8 assists.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: So love to give a shout out to the rookies when we can.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Yaxo Lindenberg holding it down in the Golden State Bay.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Let's move over to some soccer updates.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Let's get to the English Premier League.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: And for the first time this season, Manchester City failed to record a point.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: The first time this season, they didn't win a game in eight games.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: They battled back and forth with Aston Villa, but Nicholas Jackson scored in each half to Pace Villa to a two-to-one win over Manchester City.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Arsenal drew level with Man City in points as they secured their seventh win in eight games, getting goals from two of the back line defenders, Consa and Gabriel, to defeat Everton on the road two to nothing.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Norwegian star, a guy that I have been excited to see get in the lineup for Fulham.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Oscar Bobb gets his first career EPL goal as they defeat Coventry City, who started off hot but has now dropped to two wins and six losses in their first eight games and pulled Fulham out of the relegation zone with this win.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: It's not going well for a couple of my teams because Manchester United is off to their worst start in over a decade, which is saying a lot if you pay attention to the EPL, having just one win in eight matches.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: They're currently 16th in the league standings, barely out of the relegation zone.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And this weekend they got thumped by Bournemouth three to nothing.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Manchester United already issued a statement this week on Monday morning saying that they are going to stick with Michael Carrick, the new manager, former Manchester United player in the midfield and give him some more time.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Man, I don't know what needs to happen in Old Trafford to get things right, but gone, gone, gone are the days of Sir Alec Ferguson.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Liverpool scored two first half goals and one off the foot of Alexander Esok to defeat third pre place Brighton Hove Albion.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Let's go stateside into the MLS.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Major League Soccer, first place in all of MLS, all of the league, and first place, obviously, in the Eastern Conference.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Nashville FC have paced the Major League Soccer standings all season, and they have secured the supporter shield, which goes to the MLS team with the most points during the season, as they've reached the 70-point mark Saturday with a 2-0 win over Montreal.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Familiar names, Casemiro and Emile Forsberg score an early and late goal as Red Bull New York defeats Inter Miami 2-0 on Saturday.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: New England Revolution and the Philadelphia Union.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: They played a really exciting game with two goals being scored in stoppage time, but New England was able to take the points out of Philly with a 2-1 win.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Second place Western Conference FC Dallas, they were tied 0-0 with the San Jose earthquakes until erupting for three late goals following the 80th minute to secure an important win and give San Jose an earthquake of their own.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: The first place seed in the Western Conference, Vancouver FC, they were unable to find the net in Denver on Saturday, and they dropped a game one to nothing to the lowly Colorado Rapids.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: In a great battle for LA, the rivalry game itself took place as the standalone Sunday match.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: LAFC was able to score a tying goal in the 62nd minute, which knotted the game at two apiece.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: And the draw earned LAFC a clinching spot in the MLS playoffs.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: This is the last week of MLS games in the regular season.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: We will have games on Wednesday, October 28th, today, as the day of this episode, and then also our weekend matchups on Halloween and November 1st.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And then we will get going with our coverage of the MLS playoffs.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Now let's get to our main topic of the day today, the college football portion of the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: But first, before we get to week eight and week nine, I know there was um some pretty big news last week, which pertains to the college football playoff, the the noted uh agreed-upon expansion between the TV networks and the college football playoff committee and the NCAA to expand the college football playoff from 12 to 24 teams.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: This was immediately met with a loud roar of outrage, but I felt like I needed to finally address this because at first I didn't really have too strong of an opinion on it.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Um, I thought about it more and more, and the truth is I still don't.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: The truth is, I think the reactions to this are people seeking drama, you know, the the overreactions in the moment.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: When you really think about it, if we if we look at how this season alone is going so far, which is really where the trend in college football is going, is that week to week, teams that win big games fall flat the following week.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: It is very, very similar to what the modern NFL is, is that you don't always fully know what you expect from every team week to week, if they're gonna play their A game, their C game, can their C game beat another team's A game?
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, the story of the season has been that teams have had to you know get big wins and get big losses in in back-to-back weeks, and you know, that was what we saw two weeks ago with all those crazy upsets.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: We saw it again last week.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: It's been the story all season.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: So I think what you know, if we were to date this back pre-NIL era, this would not have made sense.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: There were not enough, you know, well-balanced teams that deserved to make the playoffs.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: But when you look just at the SEC, let's just look at the SEC standings as of today.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: If we if we go from top to bottom, we have our Georgias, our Alabamas, we have uh, you know, Tennessee up there, the Florida Gators, the Kentucky Wildcats, Ole Miss, LSU, Tennessee, even Mizzou and Texas, all of those teams are currently sitting with two or fewer losses.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: There's still a handful of games left to play.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Most teams have five games left.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: A few teams just have four.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: But when you look at the schedule and you look at the standings, could you really sit here on October 27th and tell me that 80% of those 10 teams I just rattled off have no business being in the playoffs?
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Of course not.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: I think this widens the field of competition out.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I don't think that this reduces the significance of rivalry games.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I don't think that this reduces the significance of big regular season matchups.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: We are just going to expand the inventory and where eyeballs are drawn to make more games matter.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: We have this in the same exact setup in the NFL.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: There are 32 teams.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: We have 17 or excuse me, eight eight teams in each conference make the playoffs.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And because of that, you get a lot of opportunities to claw your way back into the season.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: The season is not lost until it's fully lost.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: And I don't think that this is a bad thing for college football.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I don't even remotely think it's a bad thing for college football.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: I think it helps the product, it helps more teams recruit better.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I think this continues the trend of seeing teams that are at the top lose the grip on power to the teams that are in the middle.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: And the teams that are at the bottom, they will continue to stay at the bottom.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: But those teams in the middle, those are the teams that are going to benefit from this.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Teams like my Missouri Tigers.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: You know, a team like them who are currently ranked uh as of this week, 23rd, in most years, I would say their shot to make the college football playoff is dead in the water.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: But next year, next year, things drastically, drastically change.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Now let's get to our week eight college football recap.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: And as I just said, the story of the season has been big wins following big losses.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: So we got to start in Orlando, Florida, where number two BYU fell to UCF, unranked three and three UCF.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: This was a crazy game, a crazy ending.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Um, if for those that didn't watch the end of this game, it was a back and forth affair.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: It was, you know, between the overtime, the field goal scenario, um, at the end of this game, where UCF lined up to kick a potential game-winning field goal before regulation expired.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: And they were uh the field goal got blocked on on that last play.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Um, there was a penalty on uh BYU at the time, but then it was waived off.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Uh for some reason I'm not entirely sure, but ultimately the field goal was blocked.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: UCF really kind of mishandled that in end-of-game situation um with some bad clock management.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Their quarterback spiked the ball on first down with 14 seconds left.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Um, and then they kind of just threw it out of bounds the next play.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Um, they thought for a second that the penalty was on BYU and UCF was going to be able to re-kick.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, that did not happen.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: So we go to overtime.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: BYU strikes first instantly on three plays, 25 yards.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: They score to go up seven immediately on the first play.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: UCF responds.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Starting of the second overtime, UCF responds yet again.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Four yards, 11 yards, two yards, and then all the way into the end zone to go up, and then they hit the two-point conversion to go up eight.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: And Lee Lee, believe me as you may, BYU could not get the job done, and they were stopped on fourth and goal at the UCF for a wild, wild end of game scenario in the last you know, two minutes of regulation or so and overtime.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: And then finally, the final period we saw, which was double overtime, where we saw our UCF knights come out on top.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, I don't think this is that uh big of a death blow to BYU's hopes.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: They were ranked number two.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Um, they're still ranked very high after this game at number eight.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't think that this is a major blow to BYU.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: I still think they are in an okay spot to make the playoffs because of that big Notre Dame win they got last week.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: But this just again continues the trend, what we've seen in college.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Football all season long.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh uh nonetheless, a massive, massive win for Scott Frost and those UCF Gold Knights.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: Let's go to Ann Arbor, where Michigan was actually in the midst of a quarterback change.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: They finally benched former five-star all-world prospect Bryce Underwood for new Michigan quarterback, Tommy Carr, brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr, who is a true freshman from Michigan.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: He, I'm not gonna lie, looked pretty well.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: The problem was Michigan could not run the ball.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: They had 42 carries for 57 yards.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: And then on the flip side of things, Indiana.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Man, that offense looks bad.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't know the extent of Josh Hoover's injury, but I'm hoping for their sake that it's pretty significant because what is going on if it's not?
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Josh Hoover was eight of 18 for 81 yards and an interception in this game.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: They couldn't really get anything going.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Their two receivers, Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh, accounted for just five catches for 57 yards in this game.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: That's just not gonna get it done.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: I know Michigan has a good defense, I know they were on the road, but this felt like a bad sign, not only for Indiana, but for the Big Ten in general.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: The last thing that I'm curious about this game is what does this mean for Kyle Whittingham?
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Obviously, this is his first year at the University of Michigan after spending so many years of successful campaigning at the University of Utah, but he's already been on record saying this has been his most challenging season.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: If you look at what Michigan has gone through this season, obviously starting with that fluky winslash loss against Western Michigan, escaping with a seven-point win against Oklahoma.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: You lose on the last second of the game to Iowa, you lose on the road to Minnesota, and then you lose at home to Indiana.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, the rest of their schedule is pretty easy.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: They play at Rutgers against Michigan State, at Oregon, and then they finish the season against number seven, UCLA, and at number two, Ohio State.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: So obviously, they're still gonna make a bowl game.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: They're gonna win at least two of their next three games, if not all three of their next three games.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: But I don't know what the hope is here for Kyle Whittingham.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: He's not a young coach.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: This was a plug-and-play hire, so to speak.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: I know that doesn't really happen with coaches, but he the idea was that he was supposed to be an established veteran coach that was going to come in and keep that program chugging forward, and it feels like they are rescinding.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: So a lot to clean up there in Anna Arbor between this game and their next game against uh Rutgers, like I said, on Halloween afternoon, but not a not a warm and fuzzy feeling in the stomachs and hearts of most Michigan fans.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Let's get down to the SEC where there was another team dealing with some uh heavy emotions and coming off of their big upset loss to the University of Florida, the Texas Longhorns hosted the Ole Miss Rebels, and this was a crazy sloppy game.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Um, a couple interceptions from Arch, a couple bad interceptions from Trinidad.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Um, Trinidad threw three, Arch threw two, Arch was just 18 of 30 for 212 with that one touchdown, and obviously those two picks I just mentioned.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: And on the old miss side, Trinidad really ineffective.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: 25 of 52 for 250 and two touchdowns, and he threw three picks himself.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: There was no Colin Simmons in this game, and still Texas was able to force a lot of pressure on uh Trinidad and force those turnovers and some quick, hurried throws.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: The big thing for Ole Miss, though, is they just have not been able to run the football in some of these bigger matchups.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Kewan Lacey had 16 carries for just 36 yards.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: That is not good enough for them.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Um, on the flip side, Texas got some good performances from Relique Brown, the former Arizona State running back.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: He had 23 carries for 157 yards.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: And Wingo, Ryan Wingo, out of St.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: Louis, Missouri, he had seven catches for 111 yards and a nice long touchdown to go with it.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, Texas escaped with the win, so you can't harp on Texas too much for that.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: Um, but both of these teams have some hard games remaining on the schedule.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Um but these those bad arch interceptions really kept Ole Miss in this game.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And I just don't know if they're gonna be able to coach that out of arch.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: I think this is just kind of who he is, at least maybe not who he is forever, but it's who he definitely has been with Sark as his play caller.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Uh over in the Big 12, we already talked talked about BYU, but there were some other upsets.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Um, the biggest one being Texas Tech.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Texas Tech went on the road to unranked Cincinnati, who was four and two heading into this game, and they got run all over that field.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Will Hammond did not have a great game.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: JC French on the um other side for the Cincinnati Bearcats.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: He played pretty well, but the story of this game was Cincinnati Bearcats running back Cole Tab.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: He had 16 carries for 173 yards and a touchdown, a big long touchdown in the fourth quarter that really kind of blew this game open.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Um, the the the real story of this game was Texas Tech was ineffective on offense.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: They were three of 15 on third down.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: They only threw for 227 yards, um, and the turnover battle.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: They had three turnovers to Cincinnati's two.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Um, they did actually have the ball for a longer period of time, but ultimately it was just not good enough.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Their offense was not able to get the job done when it mattered the most.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Um, that first half from their offense was absolutely horrendous.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: They scored six points in the first half, and that was the recipe that did them in as Cincinnati was able to jump out to a 24-6 halftime lead and never looked back.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: They won 37 to 24 and got a big upset for Scott Satterfield there in Cincinnati, Ohio, and sets up another pretty big matchup for Texas Tech this week as they will eventually host um number 22 Arizona, uh, which will be a big game we will get to when we get to our week nine tail, the tailgate picks.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Uh staying in the Big 12, though, Utah and Houston, they faced off in what was another massive game in that conference.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Um, somewhat of an elimination game.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Utah was undefeated.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: They were 6-0 heading into this game.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Houston was uh one loss.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: They had lost on the road at Texas Tech.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: They were six and one, ranked number 14 heading into this.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: And really, for most of this game, both offenses looked bad.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: It was three to nothing Houston at halftime.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Houston jumped out to a 13-7 lead at the end of the third quarter before Utah was able to strike for two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Um, Utah quarterback Devin Dampier had a great day on the ground.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: He had 15 carries for 150 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: That's great because he did not look that good through the air.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: 18 of 26 for 204 and two interceptions.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: I don't know if this completely eliminates a team that I've been high on all season in the Houston Cougars, but it certainly puts them in a must-win scenario.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: Um, they are in the backseat by far.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: They are behind not only Utah, who is, as I said, still undefeated, um, not only BYU, but Arizona, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State in the conference standings because Houston has lost two games where all the rest of those teams have either lost one or in Utah's case, they are undefeated still 4-0 in conference.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: So it's starting to shape up like this is gonna be a Utah slash BYU bid league.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Um, perhaps there is room for Arizona.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: Um, I I am increasingly jumping off of any Texas Tech bandwagons that I could have been on.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Um, I do think that there is a slight chance they could figure this out, but that offense inspires no confidence.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: I am not gonna bank on um Texas Tech figuring out their offense.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: So let's go over to the Big Ten.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: UCLA, they are the last undefeated team in the Big Ten.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know who would have been able to predict that heading into the season.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: I certainly wouldn't would not have.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: Um, I was very high on UCLA.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: I loved their running back rotation, and their running back rotation looked great in this game.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Ty Deifenbach, um, he has been able to execute as a game manager um in the two games that he's filled in for Nico Imaliava, who is out for the season with an injury.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Um, but their running back rotation was the story of their win against Michigan State last Saturday.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Um, they won 28 to 10, and three of their four touchdowns were accounted for by three different running backs.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Anthony Woods had 112 yards, Wayne Knight, the former JMU running back, had a touchdown and 56 yards, and Javion Thomas also had 41 yards and a touchdown to go with it.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Um, just another workman-like performance from UCLA.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: Their playoff chances.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think it's realistic that they make the playoffs.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: I really do.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Like if you look at the rest of their schedule, they play Nevada this weekend on Halloween.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: That will be a win.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: They play at Minnesota, which that can be tricky.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: Minnesota is no slouch.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Um, they have a good quarterback, a good running back, a couple good receivers.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: PJ Fleck knows how to get those guys fired up.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: But the fact that UCLA will be coming off of Nevada, I think that lends to them being able to extend their winning streak at least to nine, where they will return home and uh face off against Illinois on November 13th before finishing the season at Michigan and against USC at home.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: So obviously USC is starting to trend in a very, very negative direction.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Um who knows what USC looks like by the time UCLA and USC meet up in the last week of the season.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: But I absolutely think it's it's you know very, very likely, more likely than not, that UCLA makes the college football playoff.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: And I don't think it's out of the question that they run the table and go 12-0, which that's very Indiana-esque of UCLA to do that if they're able to pull that off, especially given the fact that they lost their quarterback.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: A few other games that I want to call out.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Um, South Carolina, they were able to continue the trend that we've talked about.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Team wins a big game, which Tennessee certainly did, beating Alabama uh in week eight or in week seven, excuse me.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: And then Tennessee fell on their faces in week eight against South Carolina on the road.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Tennessee actually had the lead in the fourth quarter, but was unable to secure the dub.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: Um, South Carolina walked it off with a late score to defeat number 11, Tennessee, 27 to 24 at home in Columbia, South Carolina.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Iowa, man, they had some opportunities to win this game, including having the ball late in the fourth quarter, tied 10 apiece.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Just unable to get anything going from either of their quarterbacks.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: They played both of them, Hank Brown, Jeremy Heklinsky.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Neither option really solved the issues that they were experiencing on offense.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: And Minnesota kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to send Iowa to five and two.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Speaking of Big Ten teams laying an egg, USC laid a big one, and you could make some scrambled eggs with that puppy because they got smacked up and down by that Wisconsin Badger defense.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: They looked disinterested, they looked unmotivated.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: That looks like a team sleepwalking, like it could be getting ready to fire Lincoln Riley.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: Um, just not a lot of, just not a lot of good things to say.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Um, their former running back Brian Jackson scored a touchdown against them in this game.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Colton Joseph only threw for 58 yards.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: He basically was running the ball forwards for Wisconsin.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Um, and just a really, really bad performance from USC's offense.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Jaden Maeva was 31 of 50 for 258 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Just not not good enough.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, a massive loss to drop the Trojans to 6-2.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: A few other results that kind of stood out to me that I want to highlight here.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Arizona pummeled Iowa State 39-3 with Noah Fafita going 27 of 34 for 308 yards and two touchdowns.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: The Northwestern Wildcats, they improved to 6-1 with a beatdown of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who are now 3-5.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Northwestern beats Rutgers 42-14.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: SMU, they get their sixth win in seven games with a 59-20 handling of the Cal Golden Bears, whose season continues to spiral.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: They are also now three and five.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: LSU has won two straight since their overtime loss to Kentucky.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: They defeated Mississippi State last week on the road, and then they went on the road this week to defeat uh Auburn 38 to 17.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Absolutely handled that team.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: It was not a close game.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Before you looked up at that score, LSU was up double digits, and they never looked back.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: Sam Levitt really seems like he started to figure some things out with Lane Kiffin.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: And I think LSU is a team with that$50 million roster that is trending in a very good direction.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Kentucky also gets to 7-1, doubling up Vanderbilt 34-17.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: A huge win for the Kentucky Wildcats, but they have four games left, and they are trying to make a college football playoff push.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: And lastly, in the Mountain West Conference, New Mexico, the Lobos defeated league favorite North Dakota State 21-16 to remain as the only team in the Mountain West without a conference loss.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: A few of my favorite performances of the week, Miami Hurricanes quarterback Darien Minsa went 31 of 37 for 387 yards, four touchdowns against the Pitt Panthers, who have lost their stride without their starting quarterback Mason Heinzchel, who was out for the season.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: He was injured a few weeks ago.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Toledo quarterback, who we had in our tail, the tailgate picks, he came through for us and sure had one of the best performances of the week.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: John Allen Richter went 29 of 41 for 391 yards and three touchdowns against the Western Michigan Broncos.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: Rice quarterback or the Rice Owls Gail Ochoa, the quarterback, ran 12 times for 259 yards and four touchdowns in a wild 49 to 51.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: That's right, 100 total points in Florida Atlantic versus Rice last Saturday.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you had that game on your TV.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: I certainly did in my house.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: And then another quarterback with an outstanding rushing performance.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: Navy quarterback uh Jackson Gutierrez had 26 carries for 228 yards and three touchdowns.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: Now let's go to week nine.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Our year-to-date record on the tail-the-tailgate picks.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: We are 39, 32, and one.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: We are up 3.55 units.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Last week we went 6 and 2, up 3.85 units.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: We got to start with the world's largest outdoor cocktail party.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Number 17, the Florida Gators.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: They travel up to Atlanta for a change, not in Jacksonville, Florida, to take on the number three, six and one Georgia Bulldogs.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Georgia is favored by 11.5 heading into this game with the over-under set at 55 and a half.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: These are two rivals that know each other extremely well.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: I know that there's been um there's a new coach on the Florida sideline this year.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: This is his first Florida Georgia game in John Sumerall.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: John Sumerall is a master motivator.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: I think his team will be ready to go, especially with both teams coming off of a bye last weekend.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: I like the over in the Florida Georgia game.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: This outdoor cocktail party in Atlanta, in the dome, on the turf, in the Falcon Stadium.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: I think there's going to be points galore.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know for sure if they have decided if Aaron Philo will play.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: It's likely that that will be a close to the vest game time decision.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: But I think that this over is in play whether Philo plays, I think it's more in play if Tremel Jones plays.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: We saw a really good accurate arm from uh Tremel Jones in that win over Texas.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: And I also think that Georgia is going to be able to throw the ball and bounce back from their one loss uh to Auburn from before their bye week.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: I like the over 55 and a half, so we are going for points between the dogs and the Gators.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: A team I just talked about earlier in our week eight recap.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: That's the number 13 and 6-1 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: They host number 22 and 6-1 Arizona Wildcats.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Texas Tech is favored by 3.5.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 54 and a half.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: And this feels like an all-in or all-out moment for Texas Tech.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: If they lose this game, you could kiss their playoff hopes goodbye.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: They will not be in the playoffs if they leave this week 6 2.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: With that being the case, and the fact that this is at home in Lovick, I'm going to take the Texas Tech first half money line.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: I think they have to get out to a good start.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: I think they have to set the tone early.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: I think they jump out great.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: I think they try to establish a physical identity with Jacoby Williams and run the ball.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take Texas Tech in the first half on the money line.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: The number one team in all of college football, the 7-0 Miami Hurricanes, they travel up to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to take on the 4-3 North Carolina Tar Heels.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Miami is 14.5 point favorites in this ACC conference matchup.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 52.5.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: And I think that Bill Belichick has actually gotten this defense to play very, very well so far this season.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: The offense leaves a lot to be desired with Billy Edwards in that Tar Hill offense.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: But that defense can really line up and follow the ball.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: They can line up and shut things down.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take UNC plus 14 and a half at home to make this a closer game than Miami wants to play.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: And I just think that there's a chance that Miami comes in a little sleepy into Chapel Hill.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Give me UNC plus 14.5.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: Number six and 7-0, Utah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: They traveled to 5-2 Cincinnati off of their big win against Texas Tech last week.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: They're going to try to do it again.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Utah is a six and a half point road favorite.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: The over-under set at 56.5.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: I think that Cincinnati, if this was on the road, I for sure would take Utah.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: If this was on the road, Cincinnati would be in a letdown spot.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: But I think that this crowd will help them in the second half.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take Cincinnati to keep this close.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they get the upset, but I think they cover the six and a half.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: Give me the Bearcats plus six and a half.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: I am not a believer in Devin Dampier and Bird Ficklin and the two quarterback system for the Utah Utes.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: Number 25, Wisconsin, fresh off of their big win against USC last week.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: They traveled to Iowa City to take on the 5-2 Iowa Hawkeyes.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Iowa is favored by 3.5 in this game.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: 3.5 feels like as many points as these two teams could score against each other.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 36.5.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: And I'll give you guys my exact science.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: You set a total at 36 and a half.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: You're begging people to take the under, especially people that do not follow these trends.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: Give me the under 36 and a half.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: It's Wisconsin and Iowa.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: They may not score an offensive touchdown in this game.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: Give me the under 36 and a half.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: The Battle Line Rivalry Trophy, the number 23 Mizzou Tigers, my Missouri Tigers, they are five and two, and they travel to Fayette.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Ville, Arkansas to take on the three and four Arkansas Razorbacks.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Mizzou and Arkansas both fresh off of their bye weeks heading into this rivalry game.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Mizzou is a 10-point road favorite.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 49 and a half.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: And I think Mizzou is going to come out and establish a very strong game plan in the first half.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: I think they are upset with how things went against Ole Miss in their last game before the bye.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: I think Austin Simmons comes out and lays a strong performance on the Arkansas Razorbacks.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: I think Arkansas is not a talented team.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: I think Mizzou comes out motivated.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they cover the 10 for the full game, but I'm going to take Mizzou in the first half, minus five.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: Heading over to LA, the number two ranked 6-1 Ohio State Buckeyes, without their quarterback Julian Saiyan, we will be seeing Luke Fehey in this game.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: They travel to 6-2 USC.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: Ohio State is favored on the road, despite not having Julian Saiyan by 6.5.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 51.5.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: The fact that the bookmakers and the odds makers and Vegas set this at a touchdown.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: I'm taking Ohio State.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: I'm not looking back.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: I may not even watch this game.
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: USC looks like they quit.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: If they lose this game, they for sure will quit in the remaining three games.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: I think Ohio State has a much more talented team.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: They still have Jeremiah Smith.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: They still have uh Bo Jackson.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: They still have a lot of weapons on offense.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take Ohio State minus six and a half.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: And lastly, a fun game in the American Conference.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: 5-2 Army.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: They travel to Memphis, Tennessee.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: Walking in Memphis.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: Walking with my feet, feet off a beel.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: The five-and-two Army Black Knights travel to face those six and two Memphis Tigers, where Memphis is a six-point favorite and the over-under is set at 59.5.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: These are not your grandfather's Army Black Knights.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: These are not your grandfather's service academies.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: These service academies know how to score and get into the end zone.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: You know who else knows how to get into the end zone?
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: Memphis quarterback Marcus Stokes, who used to play at the University of West Florida in Division II and transfer it up.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know how so many schools in the state of Florida did not recruit that kid in the portal, but he is at Memphis and he lights people up.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: I am going to take the over 59.5 between Army and Memphis.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: So to recap our tail the tailgate picks for this week, we have Florida, Georgia over 55.5.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: Texas Tech first half money line.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: North Carolina plus 14.5.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: Cincinnati plus six and a half.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: Iowa, Wisconsin under 36.5.
- 46:55SPEAKER_00: Missous first half minus five.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: Ohio State minus six and a half.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: And Army, Memphis over 59 and a half.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: Some other notable games on the docket.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: Minnesota travels to number four, Indiana.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: Indiana is a 20.5 point favorite.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: Number 20, Northwestern.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: They travel out to Eugene, Oregon to take on the Ducks, where they also just announced that Dante Moore officially would not be returning this season as he is making plans to enter the NFL draft.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: Oregon, despite not having their quarterback and relying on backup Dylan Raola, they are three and a half point home favorites.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: Arizona State travels to Provo Utah, where BYU is a 16.5 point favorite at home, looking to avenge that road loss they just suffered to USUCF.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: Virginia, they travel to uh Winston-Salem, North Carolina to take on the number 14 ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
