- 0:00It's time for the Yukon Men's Football Coaches. Of course, it's the Men's
- 0:03Football Coaches Show, and with us is head coach Jim Moore on Mike Crispino.
- 0:08The Husky's coming off a one score loss at Boston College twenty one fourteen
- 0:13homecoming there, and they've got homecoming with Tennessee in Knoxville this coming weekend.
- 0:19So we'll talk about the volunteers. We'll talk about a couple of guys that'll
- 0:22be visiting with us on the show later on, Nick Harris and Malcolm Bell.
- 0:27We'll talk to coach about them as well. But Jim, this Boston
- 0:31College game I thought was amazing in some aspects. They ran eighty three plays,
- 0:37You had a forty three I think, and yet it was a twenty
- 0:40one to fourteen game. You kept him at twenty one. I thought,
- 0:45you know, had a chance to win the ball game in the sense that,
- 0:48you know, despite the fact he didn't have the ball very much,
- 0:51you still were right in it. Yeah, you know, football games are
- 0:56funny. You know, sometimes the stats don't match up to the final score.
- 1:00First of all, that that's a very good football team. The improvements
- 1:03that they've made in the last years since we saw them left last were very
- 1:10very obvious. They spent a lot of money in n I l UH,
- 1:15securing some really good football players, and we walked down on the field,
- 1:18well you could see it on film going into the game. When you walk
- 1:19down on the field, just the size and the physicality of their team was.
- 1:26You know, it was like a complete turnaround from what they had last
- 1:29year. So I give them credit for doing a great job in the portal
- 1:33and doing a great job with their with our NI l and and and building
- 1:37the team. It's you know, we talked about this a lot. The
- 1:40way you build a team now is kind of changed. You know. It
- 1:44was recruiting, and it was personality, and it was UH facilities, and
- 1:48it was opportunities and it's still those things, but you know that the NIL
- 1:53is such a big deal, and they you know, they added a significant
- 1:55chunk of money that helped them look a lot different and play a lot different.
- 2:00I give our guys credit, you know, we we we fought,
- 2:02man, And if you don't fight, you don't have a chance. And
- 2:07even if you do fight, you might not win. But if you don't
- 2:08fight, you don't have a chance. And so we fought and we were
- 2:10able to keep it close. The problems were this is we struggled to stop
- 2:15the run, and you know, they were big and physical upfront and uh
- 2:20and so if we weren't perfect in our in our technique or our execution from
- 2:24our assignment, you know, they were able to hit some big plays.
- 2:27So they stayed on the field. You know, we had we struggled to
- 2:30get off the field on third down and fourth down. They've always been a
- 2:32team, or at least this year, that goes sport on fourth down.
- 2:36They've got a quarterback that can make things happen, and he made some things
- 2:38happen. So they stayed on the field a little bit too long. And
- 2:42then when our offense had the ball, you know, we didn't do enough
- 2:45to sustain drives and keep the ball. And so that's why you had such
- 2:49a disparity in the number of plays. But the positive, if you can
- 2:53find a positive and a loss, is that you know, we were in
- 2:57another game competitively at the end, with a chance to do something to win
- 3:00it. Now the next step is winning, and you know, it's a
- 3:07process. It's a learned it's a learned behavior, and we've just got to
- 3:14continue to grind away at the things that we think are going to help us
- 3:16win, emphasize the things that we're going to help us win, continue to
- 3:21add talent to this football team, and continue you know, if we do
- 3:25that, if we if we continue to do the things we're doing, if
- 3:29we maintain a great attitude and a great work ethic and this toughness that our
- 3:32guys have, and we just find a couple more pieces and adjust some of
- 3:37the things that we're doing coaching wise, because it's always all of us,
- 3:39then you know, we'll have the breakthrough we're looking for. God, I've
- 3:44been amazed at the resilience of these guys. When I talk to the players
- 3:46every week, they just have a focus that's amazing. You know, regardless
- 3:53of record, regardless of what happened in the previous week, whether it's a
- 3:58heartbreaker that came down to the fun will play and that's happened a couple of
- 4:00times. Your players, I feel, you'll have a real sound of respect
- 4:06for the game and you as a coach and the coaching staff. They just
- 4:11don't want to let down and give anything less than what they got week after
- 4:15weekend. And you know, regardless of records. I feel like that's an
- 4:18accomplishment in some ways. Well, it's what we preach, it's what we
- 4:23look for in the character of the men that we add to this football team.
- 4:27Fortunately, there are some great examples here that we can build off.
- 4:30Guys like Christian Haynes and guys like Jackson Mitchell, and guys like Kai Kwan,
- 4:35and guys like Durante, and guys like Dalmont, and guys like Noel
- 4:41you know, and others. I don't want to slight anyone, Chris Sharon
- 4:45Malie, I don't want to leave anyone out. But fortunately there's a there's
- 4:47a group of men here that that set an example of, you know exactly
- 4:54what it's what it's got to look like, what it's got to feel like,
- 4:57how you got to do it if you want to have a chance for
- 4:59success. And I tell you what, it was funny. I was watching
- 5:01the Monday night game Detroit and the Raiders just a little bit and Dan Campbell
- 5:06came on and it was an interview they did with him his first year when
- 5:11I think they were three and thirteen, and he kind of came to tears,
- 5:14but he was talking about the fight on their team, the fight,
- 5:16the fight, the fight, and then just adding more talent base. And
- 5:21how if they maintained that fight and they added some more talent and they did
- 5:26a better job of coaching it that they could have, you know, they
- 5:30could get where they wanted to be and they're turning that thing. And I
- 5:32feel that way about our guys is we got a bunch of guys that will
- 5:36fight that they they are disappointed, they're discouraged, and then they just bounce
- 5:44back fast. And that's that is the foundation of a good football program.
- 5:48That's a good foundation of really any anything that you're going to be successful at
- 5:51is having that will to win and working towards winning regardless of circumstance. You
- 5:58can never let circumstance to determine your attitude or your effort. Never. You
- 6:01can just never do that. And if you never let attitude determine your circuit
- 6:05or circumstance determine your attitude or your effort, you always got a chance.
- 6:10Yeah, And you know, there's a I think that's a talent to be
- 6:12honest, to be a guy or a player or a coach that's facing adversity
- 6:16week after week and yet don't bring anything less than everything you have. I
- 6:21mean I was talking to my son about this the other day. He was
- 6:24on a couple of teams in baseball where they had awful results. He hung
- 6:28in, he, you know, took the ball every five days when they
- 6:30play in these tournaments around the country whatever. And I said to him,
- 6:34I think that really helped you in your life. And he said, I
- 6:38think so too, because I didn't quit. I just kept coming. And
- 6:42the guys that played with did the same thing. It's it's just so true
- 6:46in all facets of life, and and our guys have that. You know,
- 6:54none of us, none of us are going to go through our careers,
- 6:58no matter what our careers are. In football, you know, they
- 7:00keep score right and they keep a standings and all that, but none of
- 7:04us are going to go through a career unscathed. It doesn't matter what we
- 7:09do. And you know, the greatest players of all time in any sport
- 7:12of that seasons where you know it was it was crappy, and yet they
- 7:17never relented. And because of that, you build a strength. I've said
- 7:21it before. I think you know, you build strength in the struggle,
- 7:26and build toughness in the struggle, and you build resilience in the struggle,
- 7:29and uh, you know, I mean that's just how I'm a glasses half
- 7:33full guy no matter what. Anyway, So I think we're gonna I think
- 7:36we're gonna come out of this thing and we're going to be a much better
- 7:41team and much better men because of it. Yeah, I totally agree with
- 7:45you on that. All right, we take a quick break back with Jim
- 7:47Moore in a moment. This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on liar Field
