Transcript
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: All right, welcome to the show.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: Others are saving votes on Pap 40, join as always by my Sports Illustrated colleagues, Brian Fisher, and Kevin Sweeney.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: And we're declaring victory today, because we have had absolutely terrible timing taping this podcast for guarding Brendan Sorsby news.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: And finally, we've locked into something.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: The defining and final, it looks like chapter in the Sorsby saga,
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: came down Monday night and we are taping this Tuesday morning and that's of course going to be the main element of conversation here but but we got a couple other topics to hit off the top personal notes here sources sources tell me sources report the path 40 of sports illustrated that Kevin Sweeney has become engaged
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: Is this true, Kevin?
- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I am officially off the market.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: The portal was a wild experience, but I'm happy to have you made my commitment, and hopefully got a lot of a long-term luck term and I held deal to make sure nothing goes a rylator on.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: There you go, congratulations on that.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure you had to overpay to get a guess out of her, but that's OK.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, at least it happened.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: Happy to hear it.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: Is there a wedding date set?
- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, yes, tentatively it'll be a late July situation.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: I got to avoid Pete's jam.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: That was the thing that that that was a big topic of conversation.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm yeah, yeah.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know whether that's a good start to the marriage.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: If you're working around Pete's jam.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: Probably not.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: Probably not.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: You go through Pete's jam.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: and say, sorry, I can't make it to sit in the 14 degree air condition gym on a 100 degree day in Augusta.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, congratulations to Kevin.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: Big news there, very big news.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: Secondly, Brian Fisher is out touring the country in his true labor of love here as a soccer reporter.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: Brian
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, tell everybody what your nightmare area is here, where are you are now, what you're doing, and then I've got a question for you on the back end of that.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I am here in Lovely Kansas City, where it is not burning hot, like it usually is this time of year.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_02]: So that's good news.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_02]: I'm headed to Algeria versus Argentina tonight.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_02]: I have England, Croatia tomorrow in Dallas, and then obviously I just got back from Houston as well.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_02]: to go see Germany versus Kursau and the lovely 7-1 there.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_02]: So, busy week, I got some more games next week, but that's the opening group stage week for me here at the World Cup, which has been a phenomenal experience.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: And it is special for me, you know, not only as a soccer fan, but to see this event, you know, in my home state, no less, they're in Houston and later in Dallas, like that sets pretty special.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: And can't wait for the rest of these games and didn't see messy tonight.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: There you go big stuff there and yes, if you if you're into the world cup or you're into soccer and I'll follow Brian for that because he's he's way he's into that like I'm into swimming so my one question why is every game of time?
- 3:18[SPEAKER_02]: That was only one day where they were all tied.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: Otherwise, they have all been pretty, pretty dang entertaining.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, this is, this is kind of the part of the issue.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we, we talk about tournament expansion on this podcast, whether it be called football playoff or certainly the basketball tournaments that are coming.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_02]: You know, sometimes there's some teams that are maybe not worthy of inclusion and get some lopsided results like we saw with that seven one against Germany and curse out, but you know, other times you do see some of these teams just kind of stand up and have see these remarkable winds like we saw certainly with the Kverty and some of the other ones out there as well.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_02]: So it is a random tournament a little bit.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_02]: That's just kind of the nature of soccer, but I'm excited.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think we will have as many draws, not not ties draws.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, sorry.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: I gotta get my language right.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll work on that.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: See if I get it right this summer.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: I know, as I'm glad we no longer have ties in football.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: True.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: Those are out and have been out and shall remain out.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: What we also have in football, as I mentioned off the top, is definitive news on Brendan
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: who was declared ineligible for a whole lot of impermecible gambling, including Wagering on his own team, but then one an extremely dubious court decision that declared that he could play after a whopping two games suspension.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: and then everything else happened.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's been quite a week, a kind of whiplash week and the final result after a lot of pressure, a unified front from the rest of the big 12 in opposition to Texas Tech playing.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: SourceBee, he and Tech relented.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: Monday and he's going to put his name in the NFL supplemental draft.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what happens there.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: Check the Albert Brewer and a Connor Orpodcast for that because they'll be covering the NFL end of this thing as we hand off this hot potato to them.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty major developments over the last week there.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, SourceB was considered the top quarterback in the transfer portal coming out of Cincinnati.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: He went to Texas Tech for a reported $45 million.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: Never got on the field there.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about the football implications of that in a bit, but in terms of just the the landscape of college sports.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: This to me feels like a win and important win, a needed win in terms of being able to govern itself.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: But the interesting thing is this was not the NCAA doing the governing.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: This wasn't the court saying it.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: This was the big 12 saying, now we'll police our block.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: and coming up with this resolution here, laying a lot of pressure on tech and on source B, filing a fettelossed and federal court Sunday night Monday morning that I think really was a bit of a game changer here.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: Gentlemen, let's get first reactions on this, Brian, just the way this thing all went down, surprised, just general, what's your general response?
- 6:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think we were kind of headed there just the amount of pressure throughout the big 12 in the reaction to the news that he got the injunction and how strongly texted that came out in support of him I think that was just at some point the pressure became too overwhelming and you know kudos to bring the source babe for kind of reading the room and understanding that look.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_02]: Not only do I have to worry about the deadline for the supplemental draft and that is coming, but you know, he's got some high price lawyers on on retainer that has been helping them out.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_02]: And they probably all said as soon as this big 12 decision to file with a very high price law firm to represent them in terms of this legal matter in terms of their comforts, you know, that the writing was kind of on the wall from that point forward.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, he read the room and understood that, look, for the best situation, as much as he wanted to play there and love it this year and collect this $5 million paycheck, that was probably not going to happen.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, I think at this point he understood that look, I could run out of options here moving forward.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: That's how the freight train was moving in the big 12 and, you know, I think there's a big win for Brett your mark.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: In terms of his leadership in the big 12 and how strongly he supported basically 15 other members and came out in front of that, you know, this kind of, I don't want to say this kind of his Adam Silver moment, you know, from a couple of years ago in the NBA, but I think it kind of reinforced his position there in the big 12 and I think this is also leaf text tech.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: holding a little bit of a bag and a lot of anger directed at them.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_02]: Now, I'm sure Joey McGuire is going to use that, you know, for the actual team itself, and coming rally the troops and say, look, look at everybody there, they're going to get to this.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm sure that's going to be a constant presence throughout this text season.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, frankly, you know, the school leadership is still going to have to come out and explain themselves and try to mend some fences because there are a lot of them broken right now in the big 12.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_02]: And
- 8:17[SPEAKER_02]: a lot of it could have been easily avoid and I think you go back to the original decision.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not convinced that everybody in love it was prepared that this was going to be the ruling from the judge, right?
- 8:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's the one thing to keep in mind is I don't think anybody thought that he was going to be allowed to play.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: But by the tearing county judge, and I think that kind of caught everybody surprised, and then they said, all right, well, now we know we've got a circle of wagons, and that led us to this this current route and again, kudos to upper and source, we for at least reading the room and kind of Executing himself from this situation because I could have gotten even messier throughout the rest of this week.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think you're right Brian that like the
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: the probably fair view of things is not that Texas Tech was like scheming behind the scenes for weeks and like lining up the friendly judge.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe associate's of Texas Tech where we're doing that.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_01]: However, they navigate to the situation, but I do think the Texas Tech thought we can support our guy, he will lose, and then we will make a clean break with this.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: And when that didn't happen, Tech was put into a
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: tricky PR position that they then handled as poorly as I think you probably could have.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think any of the, oh, we just care about the student athletes while being like,
- 9:37[SPEAKER_01]: It was the most flimsy straw man you could have possibly come up with.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if there was a good way to explain all of this, but it certainly wasn't that.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I think for a program and an athletic department and an institution that has already been sort of branded as the renegades of this conference, the ones that are willing to push the bounds and ways that others may not or
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: or set the tone of how everyone is going to push the bounds of anyways, this was a bridge too far for them.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you're right, Pat, that the fact that it was the big 12 that was able to pull this off and not the incidental A is significant.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: I do think it will be much harder for
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you're run of the mill eligibility lawsuit, you know, think about like a turn to that Chamberless situation.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that you're going to find the strength and support of, you know, 15, you know, conference school presidents, 80s, et cetera.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: And it's a, hey, we're going to push back strongly and try to pull something like this when someone tries to steal a fifth year or size tries to, you know, maybe with like a Betty Akka.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: situation, you could see this again, but I don't know that this is necessarily the playbook that's going to solve all problems for the NCAA, and there's been a lot of talk about self-governance and individual conferences moving things.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was just a very obvious and maybe Texas Tech didn't read the room well enough that this was going to be a bridge too far for just about anyone.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: And any neutral observer was going to say this cannot be part of our conference.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: We cannot have this program be the face of our league, this season with this guy as the face of our of that team.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: It just was just wasn't going to work.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: And so to me, that's the probably interesting question moving forward is is this something that's replicable or is this a a unique situation?
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm probably more of the belief that it's a unique one off like you're never going to find
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody this aligned about the rules in college sports, but never the last.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think a good thing for a good thing for the big 12th and I think long term probably a good thing for Texas tech because I think the image was bad it would have been worse if they played out this season and and just the negativity that their team would have been surrounded with all season long.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think would have been really hard to deal with and you know in time they will be able to I think.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: benefit from the clean breakfast they've been able to make here after weeks of public relations nightmare.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: early on that you said you mentioned associates of Texas tech anybody in mind anybody come to mind there that you might be thinking of.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: Kevin, the the the maybe the guy who made the statement uh not long statement.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: I I was shocked by the way that especially given how it was the president that had led after the initial ruling I was shocked that it was Campbell that kind of took the lead and then like the school was referencing Cody Campbell statement that was that was all very bizarre to me.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if I've ever seen that where the school is like, oh yeah, the chairman of the board of regents, here's his statement, and then we're just confirming it like that was definitely new that the PR docs were not in a row on that one as somebody put it to me over the weekend.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Tech cannot control Cody Campbell.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: They can't.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he is his own force.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes for good for the school, sometimes not.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: He's a bowl in the China shop.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of how he operates.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: He's basically acting like he's in charge of everything.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: There was a point a few weeks ago where Brett Yormark declared that Cody Campbell is not the commissioner of the big 12, because I think that almost needed to be said.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so yeah, this, this is interesting when you, when you have, I think something of a, a one man power play things can get a little bit messy and little chaotic and I think the rest of the school comes off looking week feeble.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: overly indebted to a billionaire and we all know money talks and money has never talked louder than currently in higher education and in college athletic specifically.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: But Lord Scumannac, the school president Kirby Hulcott, the athletic director and everybody else who was part of that 21 minute video to the PR masterpiece that that was
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: that they're almost seemed like there was a little vent ventriloquism involved at times.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, Cody Campbell was pulling some strings on them.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see if this in any way helps Texas text administration actually regain some semblance of control of their own school.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, maybe not.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: But to me that this,
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, all right, good for source, be for reading the room.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing personal against him.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: I hope he gets his life together and goes on and has a successful NFL career.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm the NFL, and I've said this more than once on this podcast, I would be concerned about having him on franchise.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: Now, doesn't mean it's a lifetime, no you're not gonna play, but I don't know whether what his chances are in the supplemental draft.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: Having a gambling addict quarterback is problematic.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: it is heavily problematic.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: So there's got to be I think a lot of diligence done there and and slow playing this thing from that standpoint.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: And that's one thing that Texas tech did not seem willing to do, at least publicly.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_00]: They communicated to the big 12.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: They intended to play
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: were they going to make him sit out longer with you know what was going to be the real elements of checking his well-being which was the whole canard of this thing of were just trying to protect his mental health here.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: Boy we sure need him at quarterback for that third game on a Friday night at Houston and we need him to play then.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: And that, that was the most bothersome part of this to me.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: And because really it's part of the playbook that colleges have used forever whenever they're trying to play somebody who's done something they shouldn't have done and faced a backlash is like, why, you want us to throw them out on the streets?
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: No, nobody wants you to do that.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: But that doesn't mean you just shove them in the line up and play.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to actually if you're concerned about them off the court off the field then make that the priority.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: That's the whole thing with all of the
- 16:09[SPEAKER_00]: the old transfer waiver request.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the great uncle dialysis situations.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, well, my uncle's on dialysis.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: I've got to go transfer to this school to be near him.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: Do you need to, okay, sit out.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: You can sit out of your and be near him and spend time with him, or you just trying to get on the field and catch passes.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's been the, that's why people get so tired of this game.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: is just the dishonesty that's gone into the quote unquote you know well being of the student athlete.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that this was they put a pretty big harpoon in this and the big 12 did it and I'm going to give a great your mark a lot of credit and I'm going to give the rest of the conference a lot of credit.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: I wrote about it Monday night for SI you can see the column on SI.com
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this is a great moment for those two things.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: For taking care of your own backyard, when nobody else is going to do it, for banding together, for a common purpose that everybody truly believed in, for a league that has been on the ropes, and saved itself by believing in unity, and saying, you know what?
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have a
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: a bell cow college.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have a, you know, a, somebody that's going to just stand up and lead this lead.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: We got to do it all together.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: We got to stay together.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: And we got to build this conference back up together.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: Some sensible expansions.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, when they took in Cincinnati, UCF, West Virginia, Houston, and then secondly, when they took in the four corners schools from the Pac 12.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then your homework, look, he came in in 2022 and everybody said that, that guy's just a flim-flam artist, a Wheeler dealer, Moor Shackers, he's just going to try to make some money and then he's leaving.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: He may still leave, that's fine, but he's put in four years of work, the league is stable, and I thought he handled this really really well in terms of applying
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: pressure that wasn't over public pressure.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: And then getting that lawsuit into federal court, and I think Brett Yomark comes out looking really good out of this as well in addition to the big 12th.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: Now on the other side of that, obviously,
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: Some big else for some people at Texas Tech, we mentioned Cody Campbell, the administration, Ken Curry, the judge who actually made this ruling, like,
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: I have no idea what he was thinking, to me, I guess that is what threw everybody off.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: I do give tech benefit of the doubt that, yes, they were surprised this happened.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think their response was necessarily the best to it, but I do think that they were like, oh, oh, you
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: can play.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, you can play.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so he was going to play Ken Paxton, the attorney general, here's one for you guys, the attorney general of Texas kind of opened the door for the big 12 to fire back with this federal lawsuit by coming up with his own suit preemptively.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you try to sanction source be workcoming after you.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, well, if we're going to court, let's go to
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you guys mentioned that this may actually be good for Big 12.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think Kevin, you said that, uh, what do you see as Texas texts standing in the league going forward from here, Kevin?
- 19:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, look, I think it changes their perception a little bit.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I do think that
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: They have been okay with being branded this way in the past right again, I don't think pre-branding source be the perception of Texas tech was man these these guys are doing it right these are the upstanding citizens of this conference that we all want to identify with but at the same time right like.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: They need each other, right?
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: The SEC is not coming calling for Texas Tech.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that was happening before.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's certainly not happening now.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: So the big 12 needs, the tech's tech needs the big 12.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: And the big 12 needs of school at Texas Tech that is going to push the chips in, be invested in winning at a championship level, both in football and men's basketball and in other sports as well.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: So you know, with softball, we've seen it with a number of their teams.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: They are clearly invested in being a power player
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: this modern state of college athletics.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: And at the end of the day, the big 12 needs that because they haven't had enough of it.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: And so I do think the things will go back to relative normal.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: I do think that.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: Any sort of Dalliances at the rest of the conference is tried to have with Cody Campbell and I maybe this guy's actually helping us to it'll be good for the whole big 12 if these things I think that has probably changed I think it will be more difficult to work with him.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know getting maybe maybe maybe things worked out because at the end of the day if if the Protect College Sports Act is able to get across the finish line then he will get his win the big 12 will get a win in that because I think that would would
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: give the Big 12 a lot more than it would take away from the conference, but I think his power in crotch is probably over there.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think that is the ending from this.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: Less so, the Big 12 and Texas Tech Relationship, I think Texas Tech will go back to what it has been.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think the the League will benefit from them and look, Texas Tech's going to be really good at football with or without Brennan source being.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: We've talked about this when we thought he was going to be
- 21:45[SPEAKER_01]: They still might go undefeated.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: They still might be like a top 14 in the in the playoff conversation.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: As long as we'll have in healthy and that is obviously an F as he comes off the ACL, they're going to be really good.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: And when they're really good in November, I'm sure that sure the Brett Yormark will be out there playing playing PR man for this team and how great they are.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: Help them politics their way towards the playoff.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you definitely know that, that's coming.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_02]: That's like a certain thing.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_02]: And look, I wouldn't say that Texas Tech was just best of buddies with the rest of the league before this.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_02]: Like even before this entire source, we saw it.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_02]: Look, they obviously have pissed off Cincinnati, which stole their quarterback.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_02]: And that's why Cincinnati filed a $1 million lawsuit, which is still out there hovering over Britain's source, me, that he's going to have to deal with down the road as well.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think the rest of the league, especially the football coaches,
- 22:37[SPEAKER_02]: In terms of inflating the market for a lot of these salaries for players, like that's not gotten them on the Christmas card wish list at this point from a lot of folks.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_02]: You look at certainly Coder Campbell has been a big fit thorn in the side of a lot of administrators in terms of why is he always to go to.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_02]: When somebody needs to represent our conference, why is the certainly folks in Washington whenever there's a committee that seems to be the face to league at this point.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that has ruffled a lot of feathers as well, moving forward and we'll see what whether that ultimately ends up being the case and it is a little bit different from him, he's not just buddy gear.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_02]: He is a board of regions, the chairman there.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_02]: So like there's there's actually some temptation to school that do kind of make him front and center for a lot of these things.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_02]: So I think there's there's going to be.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_02]: some fallout there.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_02]: I do look at the reputations of, you know, the school president, Kirby Hoka, who I would have said, you know, three or four years ago, probably would have been one or more respected 80s, you know, in the comments.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: And I definitely don't think that is the case anymore, especially going through this saga.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you talk about somebody who is going through it, you know, the chairman of the CFP selection committee, you know, the spokesbook, you know, for for the committee itself, I don't know how those TV, you know,
- 23:50[SPEAKER_02]: shows on Tuesdays, like he was kind of one of the guys that you would turn to, you know, for serving on an NCAA committee or whatnot.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_02]: And I think those days are certainly over for Kirby and curious to see where he's kind of feature-wise after going through all this.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_02]: So it's an interesting time.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think, you know, text tech as much as we kind of do think they are kind of that team that could replace the Texas and Oklahoma in terms of carrying the banner nationally for the big 12 moving forward.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think there's some neat uneasiness with that.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_02]: for the rest of the conference, how they're doing it number one, but also, you know, this being text-steck, and a bad idea, we're aggressive, not bringing up the fact that you mentioned Kim Paxton.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_02]: He's playing, you know, he's going up for Senate later this in the midterms there, and interesting case for him to get involved in this, and really kind of gets Meg on his face, you know, locally in that state, because obviously there are a lot of text-steck fans that
- 24:48[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he went to undergrad at Baylor.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think the legions of Texas and Texas A&M fans and TCU fans in SMU fans throughout the state.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we're exactly thrilled that their state of view was stepping up on this and I think that could be an interesting appointing contention throughout the fall really.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: You know, in the great state of Texas, as a very interesting Senate race gets underway and really gets going.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_02]: I would imagine Britain's source be going to come up in some sort of debate or what not.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_02]: And it's going to have a little bit of a political football in the state of Texas moving forward.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_02]: So this story is going to have some more legs.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we are not done with it by any stretch of the imagination, both from a Texas tech standpoint, from a Britain source, to be safe point going into the supplemental draft and even going into this fall.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_02]: Because I think every time Texas tech is
- 25:35[SPEAKER_02]: going to be shown on TV, whether it's Will Hammond, whether it's Kirk Francis, they're all the backup, they got through Tulsa.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_02]: This is going to be a constant presence.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's even going to lead into basketball season in terms of some of that animosity throughout the league.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_02]: I think you're going to hear it.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to hear some students' actions and have some creative signs at college game day.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_02]: When Texas Tech might make an appearance there.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_02]: So it's going to be an interesting thing to keep track up.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_02]: Not just this week, but certainly moving forward for Texas Tech, the red raiders.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_02]: everybody else in the interview to help move forward.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think they can handle some signs on game day and stuff like that, you know, at this point.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: They, they, they, they brought this on themselves.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: They said they wanted the smoke, they got the smoke, but they've diffused the fire.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_00]: The fire is out.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: So now, yeah, how do they perform?
- 26:23[SPEAKER_00]: And here's the other thing, you know, the big 12, I think, risk tier.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: And as again, I think this is your mark listening to as constituents is like,
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: Taking Brendan Sorsby out hurts our chances of playoff success.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: The rest of the league says, well, we want to go to the playoff too, but you may have a lesser team in the playoff, whether it's a lesser Texas tech or whether it's somebody else and they're willing to take that on.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: We did discuss the big 12 and how it stands in all areas.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_00]: June 1st was our podcast on that.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to go back and look at listen to it.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: We also we did SEC Big 10 ACC and then an Notre Dame group of six.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: So that's all out there actually got pretty good response for those things.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: So check them if you have specific interest there, but I do think.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Tech can be still be very good without source B. I mean, they still should have an absolute baller defense, maybe not quite as good as last year when they were truly overwhelming, especially in the front seven, but still very good, linebacker Ben Roberts was darn near as good as Jacob Rodriguez, who was the guy that was touted for the Heisman, 280 career tackles, corner back Bryce Pollock, five interceptions last year.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: defensive tackle AJ homes 22 and half tackles for loss in his college career tied in Terrence Carter really good player on offense.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_00]: They've got, you know, they did well in the portal as well.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_00]: They just need some quarterback play and we're going to find out a little bit more about join a goires coach because I think.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's been popular, he's been successful, but a lot of that was well, did you just buy a team?
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: And this now adds an Ella degree of difficulty, maybe for them to to him to show that he can coach himself through that or around that.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to say Texas Tech is no longer the big 12 favorite.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: What do you guys think and who would you say is the favorite Ryan?
- 28:28[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think I just still keep them as the favorite because, you know, as you kind of detail there, I mean, they still have the best roster in the league, you know, if you're talking about like if we're sitting here at big 12 media days and we're looking at the kind of first and second team all conference preseason, you know, text text is going to have the best representation on both sides of the wall.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_02]: And yes, a lot of it is going to come down to Will Hammond, but I know that coaching staff really likes him.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_02]: We saw it in those flashes against Utah.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_02]: He was a very good quarterback.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_02]: There's a reason that the outside of the injury concern with him.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_02]: And it does seem like he's going to be in line just possibly start that game against Houston and make his season debut after tearing his ACL.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_02]: If he's fully healthy and ready to go, I don't mind saying that there's a massive gap between what he would be able to bring his label
- 29:14[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I just maybe just that's a little bit of by seeing them up close and person for that text tech Utah game last year, but Yeah, I think it's an excellent quarterback.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think Kirk Francis the the tolls transfer eat.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_02]: They keep them on float those first couple games You know, if need be, but this is a good roster from top to bottom.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_02]: So I I was still kind of put them the favorite Certainly be why you was just going to be right there You know, and I think that is going to be those two.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_02]: They don't meet in the regular seasons that's a big thing.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: I think for the conference to kind of get those two aligned where maybe you could possibly get
- 29:42[SPEAKER_02]: to 11-1 or even better than that teams in your conference title game to potentially get two bids to the playoff.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_02]: And look, you know, BYU certainly have a returning starting quarterback in Bearbock-Mire.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to maybe make that leap there.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_02]: They're hoping there.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: In Provo, to be the sophomore quarterback, especially as a passer, certainly some question marks at a wide receiver, but you know, they're going to be good on the undefeats.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_02]: They've got some
- 30:10[SPEAKER_02]: for the Kubernetes, it's kind of them, but I mean, this is a coin fluently.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_02]: That's the other thing that that's probably working against text tech at this point.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like,
- 30:19[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the game gets used to, you know, when you play TCU, you know, like, I mean, there's, there's just so many games that could get you on that schedule that could end up knocking you out, uh, based on those conference time workers.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_02]: So, uh, I would still have them as as as the as the favorite, but it, it, it's just going to be, it's, it's going to be a little bit closer that margin between them and everybody else in the league.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_02]: It is definitely thinned out a little bit when you don't have, no, it's not like you don't have to quarterback that you're kind of hoping on to kind of elevate you, but like what happens is, well, I'm going to get started again.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_02]: That's the, that's the other issue.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_02]: And he was, he was supposed to be the safety valve.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_02]: a little bit at the position this year in case spring source we did get hurt, you know, that they felt pretty good about them, but now that's kind of been taken away.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_02]: You know, they're gonna have to make sure that that offense line is up to stuff and you know, can can protect it because that now becomes the big key for the red radar season to move forward.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it makes, makes for the big 12 even more as an interestingly football wise in terms of, you know, who can be that foil to this red radar team?
- 31:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're I think you're right that it will be competitive, but I just look at the schedule and I see did five road games on the schedule.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: At Oregon State, first year head coach, probably not going to be the very good football team.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: At Colorado, probably one of the worst teams of the big 12 on paper, at Cincinnati, hot feed coach,
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not saying those teams couldn't beat them, and I'm not saying they couldn't lose at home.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: They could.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: But it just feels like they're still gonna be favored, pretty substantially in every game they play.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like, long as Will Hammond is healthy in some form of fashion for that Houston game, there'll be 10, maybe two touchdown favorites in that game.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, sure we could ask some Vegas people to help us with that, but there'll be some substantial favorites.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: There'll be some substantial favorites at home against Arizona State.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: There'll be some substantial favorites at home against Arizona.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: As long as Will Hammond's there, I think you're right that it removes a safety valve.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: And look, that big 12-champions game, will be very difficult if it's BYU or someone else.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be very interested to see what happens if Texas Tech is a 12-0T heading into the Conference Championship game.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like, are they in automatically in a 12-team playoff?
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: Especially if they're quarterback players kind of look shaky and they've just kind of beat up on the bottom.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I'm fascinated to see how their resumes perceived, and
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: Again, these are not necessarily, these are not computers making these decisions.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_01]: How does the college full of playoff committee look at a Texas tech team at everything that they've gone through this year?
- 32:50[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be a fascinating storyline to watch, but I still believe they'll be playing for the B12 Conference Championship and probably be favorite in that game, try it again.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, the schedule is advantageous, no doubt about it.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to say, Utah or BYU could end up ahead of them.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_00]: They've neither of whom Texas tech plays in the regular season.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_00]: Those two, and, you know, we'll see what Arizona State has.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_00]: What I would not shock me is if we see a season like two years ago.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: in the big 12 where anybody can be anybody on a given week and you know this maybe just brings tech back closer to the pack and the pack is is tightly packed and and all kinds of things happen every Saturday which would be fun that would be fine with me.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_00]: And one other thing I want to bring up on this front, on the Source B tag, big, big, 12 NCAA jurisprudence beat here, and I alluded to it earlier and Kevin made some points about it as precedent, whether this could be something that other conferences
- 34:07[SPEAKER_00]: We now maybe have something to have a recourse as opposed to just sitting on our hands or complaining anonymously and saying, this is ridiculous.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe player X or Y or Z is eligible blah, blah, blah.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_00]: In particular, Kevin, are J. Luis at LSU in a case, the basketball player.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody who seems on the face of it to be completely ineligible.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, is this a chilling effect for LSU?
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: Is that even possible?
- 34:40[SPEAKER_00]: Is it all even remotely possible to back down will wait?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_00]: And that school administration and that governor from saying, yeah, maybe we shouldn't even try this.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: Does it empower the rest of the SEC to limber up?
- 34:57[SPEAKER_00]: Does it?
- 34:58[SPEAKER_00]: Activate Greg Sanky who filed an affidavit against Bedioco's eligibility in court, and I asked Sanky at SEC Spring meetings about Luis and he's like, I'm not getting into the specifics of that, but I'm willing to bet that he would do the same thing at least.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_00]: Is this a possibility in that case in particular and then beyond that you've already pretty well answered in general, but it tell me about the Louise situation and what could possibly happen there.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_01]: I do think that's the exact type of situation where maybe we see that type of test.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you'll have quite the same
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: overwhelming support for it in part because it's not just Alabama and Charles Bayyaka that have pushed the bounds of the next, right?
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's we we spoke about the international rule changes.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_01]: I've reported on that it's worth illustrated and how that could it could impact things.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: There's been talk of a lawsuit that could potentially impact that, Auburn and LSU both potentially involved with that.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma has a G-leagueer that they're working their hardest to get cleared, but he's 23 and a half years old and has done all the things you can't do except for playing an NBA game, but he signed an exhibit 10 for four days, he had a four-day exhibit 10 contract that may keep him out of college basketball, and then he even tech to say an M has a G-leagueer Bryson Warren.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: He signed, I believe in exhibit 10, so I think the SEC has been sort of aligned and trying to push this rule to the bounds.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: Now, you know, the specifics of RJ, yeah, I think it bothers a lot of people about this lot of coaches, but I don't know that you would, I bet that if the athletic directors and the SEC started to, to drum something like this up, there might be a couple of calls from the coach, hey, like we might need this at some point.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe not, right?
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: And that is the challenge, right?
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: We've talked about this in so many forms.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_01]: at the Atas Core College Sports Programs do not want to be governed.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_01]: They can say they do, they can say they need rules, they need, they don't want this.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_01]: So I would be a little surprised if we got to that level with RJ Lewis, but I think it's certainly a lot more possible than something like a Juco waiver or something like that that's relatively benign that has brought us to the courts as a handful of times.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm just wondering, like, where would the consensus be?
- 37:15[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like, where's that line?
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: You know, everybody in the SEC in particular, I mean, they are so cut throat in terms of the competition, and they constantly want to want to up each other, not only on the field, but off it.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like, where is that line of consensus going to be?
- 37:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's just such a unique scenario.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_02]: We're really all of college works fell on one side of the line.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I don't know if there's there is going to be, you know, kind of that, that
- 37:38[SPEAKER_02]: You know, here's the actual line in the sand and the SEC where nobody's going to be able to cross it.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_02]: And so that to me is going to be the big thing.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_02]: And look, I'm not saying anything about Greg Sngi at this point, but like I mean, I think the league is pretty fractured in general.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: You know, in terms of, you know, we did that the episode a couple weeks ago.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, you know, you're safe hearing a lot more dirty laundry out of the SEC in terms of the infighting than you ever did.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's, you know, reflection on Greg and also reflection on how everybody wants to do things on their own.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think that's going to be the, the, the trick on this, you know, if anybody any conferences do want to kind of start to say, all right, you asked to be governed.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_02]: This is what it's going to look like.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_02]: And this is what it's going to take.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_02]: And it's going to take the commissioner suggesting some of these potential punishments.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_02]: And then everybody voting on it, you know, like, I think you're going to see some, some fault lines developed there, especially in the SC.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think less so in the big 10, but I think just the nature of the SEC at this point, given the schools, given the money involved, given some of the boosters in the 80s and some of these big personalities, like I would be curious to see if we ultimately reach this point with somebody like our joy Louise, you know, is there going to be enough pushback collectively from everybody else to ultimately make a difference?
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'll see that and believe it when I do.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: If nothing else, it might just scare people from making the run into the courtroom.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think that would be my hope.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: It would be, look, I think a lot of people felt like, there's no risk in this, right?
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: And Texas Tech probably felt that with with source.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, all right.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we get 20% chance of pulling this off.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: If we pull it off great.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_01]: If we don't,
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: Well, no problem.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: And there was a lot of problems when they pulled it off.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I wonder if, you know, I don't know if it'll be our J. Lewis or someone else, but there will be guys where, you know, schools have said, oh, maybe we can push the bounds.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: And that maybe this causes them to think twice.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if anything, it might be a chilling effect of just, you know what?
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: Do we want to align everyone in the conference against us, including the conference office?
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: Is it worth it if we go try to make the end run to court?
- 39:42[SPEAKER_00]: Fairpoints, you guys, make, I mean, this, it is.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: a very unique situation.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, this is, this is an egregious gambling violation we're talking about.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's not well, he had this extra year in Chupka that we're trying to get back.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_00]: I was a pro kinder, he was in Europe.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: This is, this is a, an absolute black and white rule in the eyes of everyone.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_00]: And so it may not be replicable.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_00]: But I do think it will continue to spur conversation within league offices and within league memberships.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: Of like, you know, we're kind of sick of what school acts has been doing.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: And if they try anything, maybe we need to pull a big 12 year.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: I would say even when the big 10 took on Michigan during the Conner Stockings thing.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: And that was there was several schools, maybe almost
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: do something big ten but that was that was even a tougher call this partly because it was Michigan for one thing and they had a national championship team but still it's not that easy I think to get everybody lined up in a really clearly defined stance as happened there so fascinating times it's been kind of the story of the spring in college football certainly the story of the last week.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_00]: But not the only story as alluded to in the beginning here on Thursday the Protect College Sports Act gets the markup treatment in the Senate Commerce Committee.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_00]: We're in they will try to decide what this bill should really look like what needs to be in what doesn't need to be in Can we get it closer to passing?
- 41:27[SPEAKER_00]: If you remember this this was put forward by Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell by partisan bill which gave it a chance The SEC and the big ten have lined up in opposition at least a part of it the most important part being
- 41:42[SPEAKER_00]: The potential pooling of meteorites, which they want no part of, because they have better rights than anyone else, and they don't really want to share.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's other things involved.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_00]: We've got a little bit of update on some of the modifications here from Ross Dellinger, who sports, who reported Monday night that this is something I like, a notable change.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: Schools earning at least $80 million in revenue are required to maintain
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: I like that added thing in there and that is believed to have been largely a can't well driven change and a Democrat driven change.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see where that ends up, but if that helps swing people to the side of pushing that bill forward so much of the better, but we're not congressional scholars here.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to put a ballpark on chances that this bill moves forward through Thursday and is still a viable bill and what it looks like, uh, Brian, what do you think?
- 42:58[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's a good question.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_02]: We need it.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_02]: We need to do.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_02]: I have a producer can't play the the jailhouse rock.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_02]: You know that the house.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_02]: Well, how's rock.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_02]: That's it.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we need to have that house.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_02]: You must also fit for this show.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_02]: That's true.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_02]: And especially nowadays after everything going on with Britain, sort of in what the speed of things.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think is working and it's.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_02]: The fact that we're still debating this after a couple of weeks after it's actually introduced, I think there is just so there's a lot of pressure to get this done basically in the month of July.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, look, the summer recess, everybody kind of puts that down as kind of the dividing line.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_02]: In terms of if you get something done, you know, in July before Congress goes on recess, you got a shot.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_02]: And at least get it to the floor and then get it over to the house.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_02]: Whether, you know, the markup on Thursday, whether that ultimately satisfies, you know, the big time the SEC, I'm not gonna say that it is, but they might get enough changes enough tweaks, enough amendments to where maybe it's more tolerable.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_02]: And then maybe they can get some help in the house to hopefully get that, you know, resolved in terms of some of the language, but they're ultimately looking for them.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think that the revenue sharing component is definitely the one that gets everybody's eyes open a little bit wider.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, there's definitely the detail.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, the Olympic sports hat.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_02]: How are our athletic directors now going to have to look at, you know, how they budget?
- 44:17[SPEAKER_02]: You know, if this ends up passing, right, if you're on the line there, you're 78 million dollars in terms of budget.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_02]: You know, are you going out and raising another two million dollars in order to fall under these, you know,
- 44:29[SPEAKER_02]: The potential bill and what it might impact, you know, your revenue sports, your scholarship costs, sort of things.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_02]: So I think there's a lot of like second order effects that are still being studied by the industry and look, it is still moving.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_02]: So like there's no final language where they can say, how is this going to impact me?
- 44:43[SPEAKER_02]: I do think that, you know, in general, the fact that they are at this stage though, this quickly, I think it gives it a shot.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to say that it's going to definitely get over the line.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen politics come into play too many times.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_02]: on a whole lot of other issues and a much less saving college sport, so it's got a shot.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_02]: But as for whether it ultimately gets on the line, I don't think it means anything that we're here on Thursday.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_02]: But positive positivity is at least running a little bit higher than it was last week, especially going into what I think a lot of people thought was the source of the thing it could end up distracting from this process, work it end up helping it.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're probably falling on the line of this.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_02]: I actually end up helping it because it's definitely getting talked about a lot more that Hey, you want maybe the NSA doesn't need that interest, you know, exemption here or there and I want to be very curious to see if they can at least slim the build down a little bit that that's probably going to be key in in my mind Can they slim things down take some stuff out
- 45:40[SPEAKER_02]: that we know is going to be controversial, but could at least help potentially getting it over the line in terms of getting enough support because we've already seen some senators come out against it as is.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure we're going to see even more on Thursday come out either for against it.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_02]: So it's going to be something to track, but again, in general, setting the politics side, the fact that we're at the stage.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_02]: I think is at least a positive sign for the industry itself in terms of getting the ultimate help that they wanted from
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious to see if at some point here soon we get more comprehensive either support or pushback.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_01]: My guess strongly would be pushback from some sort of player entity as much as they don't exist at the moment.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_01]: Because there's a lot in this bill that like
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: would not necessarily be great, at least for, again, I do think sometimes we talk to grandiosely, oh, you know, the players are benefiting so much right now, like, well, power five football players are benefiting quite a lot right now.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_01]: Power five men's basketball players, benefiting quite a lot right now.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_01]: Whether the system itself is stable or healthy, I think it's open to question, but, you know, look, I don't think we're going to be like, if this bill passes as written, we will not be in a world where
- 46:55[SPEAKER_01]: Or a basketball team could have a $20 million roster or even a 15 or probably even a 10 like like there would there there is the potential with this bill to pretty substantially Nero the scope of what the roster budgets look like and I don't know the hat that that has gotten a lot of attention in the all the other details that that exist in it right now of like this is a chance to like pretty substantially cap earnings in a way that I don't think.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, even maybe the people writing the bill understand because they may not understand just like the like I as a report that between football and men's basketball Florida is 50 plus million dollars in the whole on its roasters like we're so far removed from the $20 million cap, it's not even funny at this point.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm curious if it comes up Thursday, or if it doesn't come up Thursday, if it comes up soon after, like, what are we looking at here and what types of changes?
- 47:47[SPEAKER_01]: I do think that's the change is probably gonna have to happen if this bill is going to go into effect.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_01]: Is that there's gonna need to be some agreement that the cap is moving, if there's going to be a cap at all, that the cap is coming closer to where the market actually is.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: Because if we're moving to a world where the cap is back to the house cap,
- 48:04[SPEAKER_01]: There can be a lot of people taking some really a lot of angry players and angry agents taking substantial substantial pay cuts.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_00]: right and so that's where we'll see if there is enough of a unified voice on a player advocacy and there are a lot of Democrats that are advocating in that area saying, you know, we this is still a non-athlete friendly bill.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_00]: To that point, it is specifically a non-power-five football
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: It is fascinating because that horse has gotten out of the barn and it is running around the field and can you get the horse back in the barn and what does the barn look like is it the the small somewhat our steer barn of house the original house settlement which is really funny to say when you think what the barn looked like a couple of years ago Like then it was just hey and oh, so that's always in the barn and now you know what you got you got a pretty good stall in the barn, but
- 49:01[SPEAKER_00]: Is it the stall that the market bears?
- 49:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, the market may bear a Taj Mahal stall for said horse here.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm probably pushing this analogy way too far.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: But...
- 49:13[SPEAKER_00]: That's the fascinating part of this is I agree with you Kevin.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you can go back to a 20.5 million cap or something there of when we're talking about 40, 50 million over here.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_00]: There probably needs to be a middle ground there.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: And again, still you're going to have people saying, you are applying an artificial limit to the market.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's where the tension lies.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know where this ends up, but I do think that's probably going to be
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: and the most significant pushback when it comes to actually applying the economics of this situation.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see what happens there.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing here, obviously, with the bill, I mentioned big 10 SEC, not so excited about it, NCAA, very excited about it.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_00]: And kind of use the, the source B thing and send a memo to conference commissioners out there saying, we can fix this if we're empowered by this bill.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_00]: So that's another element to keep an eye on in terms of,
- 50:21[SPEAKER_00]: what this does for the NCAA.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: That I'll ask this question.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'll ask you, Brian.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_00]: The NCAA has come off looking quite powerless because of one crackpot judge, really in Texas, but there's been another a number of rulings.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: Where does the NCAA stand with source bees out of the equation?
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: Now, what is the power level that the NCAA still has and how much does it need a protect college sports act to remain viable?
- 50:50[SPEAKER_02]: I definitely think we've seen the cracks in the system certainly in terms of their legal standing.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, even the source be case, a couple of days later in South Carolina was cited by another judge.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_02]: That's where they're at, in terms of getting Tristan Smith comes in football player, getting his elder heroological view back.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_02]: And look, it's definitely a tenuous ground.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_02]: They had a lot of success, I think, in general, in terms of some of the eligibility stuff.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_02]: But there's been a door open and you can probably think of top prom bars and and try to add Chamble is for opening it in terms of some of the contract law that they're finding success now in local state courts and they would love to be able to enforce these things and look It's it's just down to local judges at this point and they do need help so like there's a reason why the National Office and Charlie Baker everyone Why Charlie Baker was hired was to get this over line?
- 51:41[SPEAKER_02]: and the reason why they've been pushing for it so long and because it is untenable.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the rules are as much they are on the books.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_02]: They don't mean much when easily a school or a player can go on to a local judge and get them overturned.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's kind of the
- 51:57[SPEAKER_02]: situation they've been trying to kind of push and tell Congress and all the other folks on the hill like, hey, look, this is where we're at right now.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_02]: I think they have more real-world examples that they can point to.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think probably helping them in terms of making their case that they do ultimately need something, whether it's the Safe College Sports Act or others.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_02]: in order to exist at this point because you know it's it's frankly make it up as you go along at this point in terms of who's actually following the rules and what they can do from them moving forward.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_02]: So definitely some excitement I would say in terms of very maybe maybe they got something there in the national office and look.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_02]: even if they don't get something over the line in July, they're still going to keep trying.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_02]: Like whether it's heavily democratic Congress or whatnot, yeah, the shape of what they might ultimately be able to get out of Washington.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_02]: You see might look different, but there's still some hope that even down the road, whether it's either in a lame dot Congress or potentially a new one for next year, maybe they can get something.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I think there's at least some progress in terms of right.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_02]: Now that said they did even a couple months ago because of these high profile cases and we'll see if ultimately the bad PR around the NCA being able to being unable to enforce their own rules will actually help them there in DC.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: the source be situation is I think a perfect example of how the incident like couldn't win a lot in court and every time it loses it's so much worse some every 10 wins it gets right and you know they look you could have went to 50 different states and at 50 different judges and had you know every every quarter back in America have to go to court and try to fight that they should be allowed to gamble and play college football and like
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: All it takes is one to destabilize the system.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that is sort of the potent message that they can communicate to lawmakers, people in Congress, people who are making the decision whether vote for this bill or not.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_01]: So look.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_01]: Even if you can't give us everything we want, we need some degree of protection.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_01]: So we don't keep ending up in this cycle, right?
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, again, the Tristan Smith case you mentioned, Brian's a great example, right?
- 54:12[SPEAKER_01]: How many lawsuits now have in some former fashion addressed five-year clock, junior college, does that count?
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: Does it not?
- 54:22[SPEAKER_01]: Who can get a Pavia waiver?
- 54:24[SPEAKER_01]: Who can't?
- 54:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I would say half the cases I see these days are in some form A, while this guy played junior college, should have counted it now.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what an unsustainable and ridiculous way of operating, that every week there's a new lawsuit that says, well, this guy should be allowed to, and he won his injunction, this guy lost his injunction, this guy won his injunction, but needs a restraining order, this guy won, you know, it doesn't work.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that is what the NCAA needs to be hammering home.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: again, you don't have to solve every problem for us.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: We'd love it if you did.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_01]: But if nothing else, we just we can't be in a courtroom every week in a different city, fighting a different bow.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_00]: Right, with an arbitrary judge who may just come up with something on his own or something that benefits his home state school.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_00]: So, uh, interesting times there.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_00]: Final story, guys, we'll get everybody out of here on this one.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, we're going back to the world cup, uh,
- 55:28[SPEAKER_00]: And we're talking about Mexico.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: What do they call their team L3?
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_00]: All right, L3, they got off to a good start, right, beat South Africa, I believe it was, but the big thing they got a duck, they got a two-year-old duck named Merlin, who wears the kit, and that correct terminology again here, right?
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and then anywhere socks, like at the green kit, and a water's around, and he's kind of like the, I guess he's in Mexico City, the unofficial mascot of the team, people seem to think he's delightful,
- 56:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's fine, go duck, Oregon may want to see if they can co-opt him, bring him into the fold there, as opposed to just using the Donald Duck thing that rides a motorcycle.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_00]: My question for you guys.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_00]: We'll start with you, Kevin.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_00]: We'll go to Brian.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_00]: If you could come up with some live animal that isn't already in use to represent your favorite team, doesn't have to be World Cup and anything.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_00]: What, what animal are you going with?
- 56:31[SPEAKER_01]: Man, this is, this is a real challenge.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I would love to find, I think, I think given the next is championship.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_01]: And given the city's love-hate relationship with rats, I feel like it's, it's a real shock that the next do not have an honorary rat that will break the championship.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_01]: There probably is the videos every other pictures are great and I know people, I don't have sides we did that bunch of,
- 56:58[SPEAKER_01]: really cool shots from from the celebration, and it's only just beginning.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_01]: But I believe there could be a rat that could be the star of the show at the Parade on Thursday.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_01]: So stay tuned for that.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_02]: Where it needs a rat.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_02]: And we have pizza rat from the city and that could be the certainly the unofficial mascot of New York City as much as I love the place.
- 57:20[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I also noticed, you know, as we can a world cup like I think it was a couple of hours or some of the others, they were using goats.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's like that and that could be good.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_02]: tie in there and know maybe as a goat you know a couple others obviously there's a whole billy goat thing with it with the cops on the thing you go might be the the way to go with this but you know Kudos Pat like this is the definitely the most esoteric thing I thought we're going to talk about the the Jeremy guy Freddie and his road trip to the SSC are from the cool things that we've seen like all the scots taken over they're involved in the drinking the play strike it is it is at least reaffirming at least to to me
- 57:56[SPEAKER_02]: Since see everybody from Europe and all these other places embrace the Americanism, if you will, and how we live a little bit large, you know, like all the people who are excited about the barbecue here in Kansas City, like the places are packed.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_02]: Well, certainly last night with with Argentinian fans.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_02]: And everybody's got a chance, but they're also embracing America with a swirl cup, which is nice to see in a little bit reaffirming.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know if they're going to keep picking animals here to keep on the bandwagon, but it is nice to see.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_02]: And second order effect, if you will, from this world up.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's, you know, the Argentinians going to the barbecue spots in KC, that's that's a clash of meat powers there.
- 58:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Argentina, they know how to make steak and, you know, the big meat restaurants there.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: So that's that's good stuff.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to see like, I think Morocco is in Morris town, New Jersey.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_00]: I want them to go to the food trucks and like at Rutgers, you know, or up in North Jersey.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_00]: take them there, probably not the night before a game or anything, but there's a lot of possibilities there.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_00]: The German people were freaking out over Bucky's.
- 59:01[SPEAKER_00]: They were going to the Waffle House.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_02]: So, what a burger before you can hack with German.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I bet that I wonder what they thought of the UFC thing.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_00]: Never mind, I don't want to know.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_00]: This is not a double entendre or anything else.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think somebody needs to embrace the beaver.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_00]: We have a cabin on a lake with a beaver that is an absolute badass.
- 59:29[SPEAKER_00]: This thing swims around with giant branches in its mouth at high speed, slams its tail down and it sounds like a gunshot.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_00]: I would not mess with these things.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_00]: So if you want an aggressive, tough-minded, hard-working animal to represent your team, go get yourself a beaver.
- 59:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's enough of this show.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for listening.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_00]: We'll help you back next week.
