- 0:01Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and of course.
- 0:11Tyler Johnson: Elevate the medium of comic. I almost forgot the E-word. Elevate.
- 0:15Tad Eggleston: That's the important word. Elevate.
- 0:18Phil: I thought we were elephanting the medium.
- 0:20Tad Eggleston: No, shut up!
- 0:22Tyler Johnson: An elephant, the medium of comics.
- 0:25Tyler Johnson: Don't ruin it, Phil. This is my… ugh! Okay.
- 0:31Tyler Johnson: Who's watching?
- 0:31Phil: Maybe this elephant in common, sorry.
- 0:33Tyler Johnson: I am Tyler, and across the interwebs.
- 0:37Tyler Johnson: from me is Tad and Phil. Good morning, guys. How are you?
- 0:42Phil: Good morning there, Tyler.
- 0:44Tyler Johnson: The other day, I was reading some old Marvel TED, and I came across one that says, after next page, right?
- 0:52Tyler Johnson: And…
- 0:53Phil: That's some really old Marvel, then.
- 0:55Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and I realize I've been saying, after the next page.
- 1:01Tyler Johnson: At the end of the show, maybe…
- 1:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I have been, too.
- 1:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah, but…
- 1:07Tad Eggleston: Actually.
- 1:08Phil: Yeah, but what's on the page is actually.
- 1:12Tyler Johnson: After next phase.
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: age. They skipped to the…
- 1:15Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:16Tad Eggleston: I wonder if they always do?
- 1:19Tyler Johnson: That's what I noticed when I was going through old comic books.
- 1:22Phil: Hmm.
- 1:22Tyler Johnson: So… Anywho…
- 1:28Phil: The only real time I've run into that was on the Defender series that was trying to… I'd have to check to see if they left the thuds in, or not.
- 1:37Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:37Phil: Ew.
- 1:38Phil: But it is, it is the week of Comics Perot, a,
- 1:45Phil: Would you call it a convention, or is it more of a…
- 1:48Tad Eggleston: It's more of a retailer summit, I think is what.
- 1:50Tyler Johnson: More of a get-together, more of a get-together.
- 1:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Retailer Summit? So the first thing we need to do is apparently mind management.
- 1:57Phil: It's recruiting. Right.
- 1:59Tad Eggleston: And, Phil has offered to risk the possibility that Mind Management will completely fry his phone and possibly his head to call the recruitment number.
- 2:10Phil: You know, someone had to put themselves on the wing.
- 2:12Tad Eggleston: can hear what's going on. Yeah, this is what happens by being the new guy.
- 2:15Phil: Yep.
- 2:18Phil: Can you hear that?
- 2:24Phil: Yes.
- 2:25Phil: Strange event, or they happen. Sometimes. Strange things happen around you. Always. If so, we're here to help.
- 2:33Phil: You are invited to participate in the following auditory recruitment exam.
- 2:39Phil: This is step one on your path to entertainment, enlightenment.
- 2:44Phil: And webinars I might be.
- 2:46Phil: Simply stay on the line and listen to each one of the following three recordings.
- 2:51Phil: After each round.
- 2:53Phil: These break your feelings and anxiety.
- 2:56Phil: agitation, or uncontrollable distress from 1 to 9, you think their time shown to be bad. 1 being the lowest, 9 being the highest.
- 3:06Phil: Our trained team of agents will then analyze your results, and let you know if you qualify to proceed to the next page of our recruitment protocol.
- 3:14Phil: Test 1 will begin after the beep.
- 3:24Phil: Oh, boy.
- 3:36Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 3:40Phil: Oh, that was more of a…
- 3:41Tyler Johnson: Is it still going?
- 3:42Phil: Oh, yeah. Can you guys hear that?
- 3:46Tyler Johnson: No.
- 3:52Tyler Johnson: that.
- 3:53Phil: Okay, that was fun.

- 4:20Tad Eggleston: Okay.

- 4:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, I might call later, just cause… Yep, I think so.
- 4:25Phil: Send a text message. Congratulations!

- 16:03Tad Eggleston: So… That… that is the Zelda Awards.
- 16:08Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been?
- 16:12Tad Eggleston: Well, the president bragged about how he was very good at reading paragraphs yesterday.
- 16:17Phil: Something I need to, you know, reconfirm for myself regularly.
- 16:21Tad Eggleston: Well, and he used that as justification for why he was right to praise the wisdom of Sam Alito…
- 16:32Tyler Johnson: Guys, I will be right back, okay? You just keep talking, I'll be right back.
- 16:36Phil: His coffee's kicking in, that's for sure.
- 16:38Tad Eggleston: Sam Alito and Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh.
- 16:43Phil: Ew.
- 16:44Tad Eggleston: to… and to…
- 16:48Tad Eggleston: I mean, obviously throw the liberal justices under the bus, but if anything, he was worse to Gorsuch
- 17:02Tad Eggleston: Barrett and… Roberts, who he called tradersh, and disloyal.
- 17:10Tad Eggleston: And… All that stuff, because they,
- 17:14Tad Eggleston: they ruled against him on tariffs. Of course.
- 17:18Tad Eggleston: They also neglected to say what was supposed to be done about it?
- 17:24Phil: Oh. Yeah.
- 17:26Tad Eggleston: strict scrutiny, the… the Crooked Media podcast did a… did a good emergency episode in which they… they pointed out that,
- 17:35Tad Eggleston: There is an element of this that fits right into the authoritarian playbook, because, like, they shot him down and were able to appear…
- 17:47Tad Eggleston: independent.
- 17:50Tad Eggleston: But… not in a way that doesn't still give him massive control over all sorts of things.
- 17:58Phil: And…
- 17:58Tad Eggleston: They insisted on using their made-up major questions doctrine.
- 18:04Tad Eggleston: Which, thank God, that the three… concurring…
- 18:09Tad Eggleston: liberal justices made clear was not part of their concurrence. Right. They're like, we can just use the law. We don't need this.
- 18:21Phil: Oh, that's like… I mean, I was just… I was already thinking that, yeah, that's actually a really good point, that by the Supreme Court appearing to…
- 18:31Phil: put a check on him. It seems like things are quote-unquote more normal, but hasn't he been selectively listening to the court already? Like, they've… multiple times that they've… they've ordered, innocent people released from ICE concentration camps, and, more than…
- 18:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, not generally the Supreme.
- 18:52Phil: Right. Okay.
- 18:54Tad Eggleston: He's more likely to listen to the Supreme.
- 18:57Phil: Yeah.
- 18:57Tad Eggleston: Now, they often give him wiggle room. You know, Kavanaugh, in his dissent, you know, laid out that one of the reasons that he was dissenting was that…
- 19:12Tad Eggleston: There were other legal ways for him to put these tariffs in, just not the way that he'd done it.
- 19:19Phil: Oh, God, wow. Probably so.
- 19:21Tad Eggleston: Robertson.
- 19:22Phil: Literally.
- 19:22Tad Eggleston: Like, excoriated him in his own…
- 19:26Tad Eggleston: majority opinion, essentially saying, stop being the president's lawyer, don't judge on things that aren't… I mean, he didn't say the words out loud.
- 19:36Phil: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:37Tad Eggleston: judge on things that aren't actually in front of the court.
- 19:40Phil: That's funny. That's hilarious. Oh, man.
- 19:43Tad Eggleston: Trump, in his speech, talked about… The other ways tariffs could…
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, but, like, remember when Barack Obama questioned a decision as being poorly thought out?
- 19:59Tad Eggleston: Naming any justices by name, just saying that he thought the decision was bad, and it was a…
- 20:05Tad Eggleston: HUGE fucking story, and everybody's like, oh, you can't mess with the court, blah blah blah.
- 20:12Tad Eggleston: You remember this?
- 20:13Phil: I don't, actually.
- 20:14Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay. That decision, by the way, was Citizens United.
- 20:18Phil: I had a feeling it was gonna be Citizens United, because that sounded like the most likely one to question, but yeah.
- 20:23Tad Eggleston: But also, apparently, all of those rules are gone now.
- 20:27Tad Eggleston: Because… because this president can call out justices by name, and call them…
- 20:33Phil: Oh, oh.
- 20:34Tad Eggleston: I thought for a second, I thought for a second. And dumb, and…
- 20:38Phil: No, I… when you said those rules are gone for… I parsed…
- 20:41Tad Eggleston: No, I bet those rules for presidential decorum For spending on elections.
- 20:46Phil: I was like, did some… I'm like, don't… you know…
- 20:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, don't break my brain more than…
- 20:51Phil: The left for spending on elections are pretty much gone, too. But, I mean… cut.
- 20:58Tad Eggleston: Are there rules for spending on elections?
- 21:01Phil: The day we can stop considering corporations people will be… will be a good day indeed.
- 21:07Tad Eggleston: I think that…
- 21:10Phil: when I say that, I mean the legal distinction that a corporation is a person that can have unlimited spending.
- 21:16Tad Eggleston: Oh, I totally knew what you meant. I just think that…
- 21:24Tad Eggleston: If we're being really, really honest…
- 21:28Tad Eggleston: Corporations will stop being… people… sometime…
- 21:41Tad Eggleston: AFTER… We stop being people.
- 21:45Phil: Ouch.
- 21:46Phil: Oof, that hurts.
- 21:49Tad Eggleston: Let's just be honest here.
- 21:50Phil: You know, when I… when I long for you to have said instead that, corporations will stop being people and start being governments sometime after year X, like, when I'm longing for the Lazarus reference, you know that we're in a dark place.
- 22:05Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think that in many of the corporate territories, including the one we spend the most time in, Carlisle, most people have stopped being people.
- 22:17Phil: Yeah. When corporations become governments. Yeah.
- 22:21Tad Eggleston: They become waste.
- 22:23Tad Eggleston: Anyway… Let's go through the rest of the initial…
- 22:29Tad Eggleston: order highlights for new to order. February 26th is when the date is due.
- 22:37Tad Eggleston: And I don't even have to talk for a while, because there aren't enough for me. Phil gets two, and Tyler gets two, so… take it away, boys.
- 22:47Phil: Alright, first up, we have got, I believe the title was Planet Atmos X Exordium? Yes, Exordium, by Dr. Bushel Rob Mc…
- 23:01Phil: McVeady, Andrea Cucci, and covers by Tommy Lee Edwards.
- 23:06Phil: Some heists succeed, some fail, and some fail so spectacularly as to set off a chain of events that irrevocably alter a planet's future. After triggering security alarms in the underground stronghold of an intergalactic pharmaceutical conglomerate, a ragtag group of thieves must use every trick at their disposal to escape and survive. The fates of legendary racing pilot Pesh Chosen and the fugitive known as Addie Acker.
- 23:29Phil: collide, and neither of them, nor Planet Atmos, will ever be the same. Planet Atmos Exordium is the first entry in the Planet Atmos universe of games and stories. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of March 30th in stores, April 22nd from… is that… Mad Cave?
- 23:49Phil: MA?
- 23:50Tad Eggleston: It is.
- 23:51Tyler Johnson: Snake Hayes!
- 23:52Phil: Very exciting.
- 23:55Tyler Johnson: Alright. Swamp Thing.
- 23:59Tyler Johnson: Lost my screen here, hold on.
- 24:01Phil: Oh, face…
- 24:02Tyler Johnson: swamp thing, soon as I can get back to what I was looking at. 1989!
- 24:08Tyler Johnson: Alright, will you scroll down for me, Ted?
- 24:11Phil: It's not 1989, what are we… what are we talking about.
- 24:13Tad Eggleston: Number 1 or number 88, depending on how you look at it.
- 24:17Tyler Johnson: Yeah, one of the greatest stories never told. Introducing the most famous unpublished comic, DC comic of all time. Over three decades since the controversy and cancellation, Rick Beit's legendary lost issues are completed.
- 24:33Tyler Johnson: After a renowned two-year run on the series, Veich… is that how you pronounce it? Veitch? Brand finale…
- 24:39Tad Eggleston: Spice.
- 24:40Tyler Johnson: Vaish, Grand Finale to Swamp Thing was cut short and was never… would never see print.
- 24:45Tyler Johnson: Whispers and leaks hinted at the epic, untold saga for years. Now, for the first time, that final story is told. As Swamp Thing is cast back through time, he will get to meet a carpenter who will change the trajectory of his life and the DC universe forever.
- 25:03Tyler Johnson: The origin of Etrigan and Swamp Thing's journey to the beginning of time starts here. This is, by, again, by Rick Beitsch, art by Michael Zuley and Vince Locke from DC, of course. Final order cutoff is, April 6th, and will be in shops April 29th.
- 25:22Phil: So I don't want to spoil things for anybody, but that… that carpenter that changes Swamp Thing's life turns him into a coffee table.
- 25:30Tad Eggleston: I thought… I thought the carpenter was named Jesus.
- 25:34Phil: Oh, sure. Pretty sure, yeah.
- 25:35Tad Eggleston: Jesus. Maybe Joshua.
- 25:37Phil: I think they find a really sweet cup, too.
- 25:42Tad Eggleston: Alright, we've gone through all the graphic novels, so we're gonna do a couple of collections, starting with the one that I'm shocked that Phil didn't pick a long time ago.
- 25:51Phil: You know, I… it…
- 25:53Phil: I, you know, it does sound good. The Complete 2000 AD by Alan Moore, Future Shocks, and Other Stories. It's gonna be Alan Moore as a legendary comics writer credited with transforming the medium and how it was seen through his seminal works such as V for Vendetta, From Hell, and of course, Watchmen.
- 26:11Phil: But before any of that, he cut his teeth at 2000 AD, the galaxy's greatest comic. It was there that Moore honed his craft in preparation for the accolades that would follow.
- 26:21Phil: This first volume in a new series collecting all of Alan Moore's work for 2000 AD brings together all of his future shocks, as well as a host of other one-off stories. Moore is a master of the short-format story, and this collection doubles as a perfect guide for how to write comics to a page limit. - 27:07Phil: if you'd like, details and insights and, criticism of these early works of Moore's, they are gone over in Volume 1 of The Last War in Albion, quite extensively. So, it… I guess the reason I hadn't picked it is, I guess I didn't know… I didn't know how, Mr. Moore still feels about
- 27:27Phil: 2018, his work, you know? Yeah, I guess since his name is still on it, then, I'm sure.
- 27:33Tad Eggleston: I would actually, from what I know of him.
- 27:36Tad Eggleston: I would imagine that this is still some of the work that he… Feels best about.
- 27:41Phil: Probably, you know? I hope that's one of those things.
- 27:45Tad Eggleston: It certainly involves some of his best work.
- 27:48Phil: Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of… a lot of great stuff, for sure, and a lot of weird, interesting things.
- 27:55Tyler Johnson: Alright, we have Uncle Scrooge Lost Beneath the Sea by Carl Banks.

- 28:02Tyler Johnson: Barks, sorry, my eyes are terrible. Carl barks. It's a catastrophe when an ocean liner with Scrooge's old number one dime on board. Man, that is a,
- 28:15Tyler Johnson: Steam that never dies. Old dime on board, sinks in a raging storm at sea. Donald and.
- 28:21Tad Eggleston: You would go…
- 28:22Tyler Johnson: after…
- 28:23Tad Eggleston: I, I, I'm trying to remember…
- 28:25Tad Eggleston: when the number one… I mean, because Barks created the number one dime.
- 28:29Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 28:30Tad Eggleston: But I don't know how early… like, what I'm trying to say is, is we're talking.
- 28:35Tyler Johnson: ugh.
- 28:36Phil: is a thing that never dies. I don't know where it came from. …appeared in…
- 28:41Tad Eggleston: Bark's mythology, so, like, this could…
- 28:45Tad Eggleston: Probably not the debut, because I think I've read about it in…
- 28:49Tad Eggleston: Earlier volumes than this, but, like.
- 28:51Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 28:52Phil: Is it perhaps a metaphor for the gold standard?
- 28:57Tyler Johnson: Donald and Scrooge go after it, only to discover that the vessel has taken to an undersea ship graveyard where four armed Martians are salvaging the metal from the sunken ship for their own planet.
- 29:10Tyler Johnson: Next, Scrooge takes the ducks on a flight to the Yucatan Peninsula in search of Mayan ruins, but two scoundrels follow and trap them in a deadly pool of peril called the Well of Sacrifice. Then, Magica Dispel learns of Scrooge's expedition to find the island where geese lay eggs with golden yokes.
- 29:29Tyler Johnson: With the aid of the Beagle Boys and their dirty tricks, the race is on. Carl Barks delivers another wildly imaginative collection of outrageous adventures.

- 29:51Tyler Johnson: Barks experts. The final order cutoff for this will be March 16th, and will be in shops July 1st.
- 30:00Phil: I'm sure the International Pale of Bark Experts are just a bunch of dogs.
- 30:06Tyler Johnson: just a…
- 30:07Tad Eggleston: Don't you knock Carl Barks.
- 30:09Phil: I'm not knocking!
- 30:10Tad Eggleston: expert.
- 30:11Phil: I'm not knocking! I'm not knocking! I love dogs, too.
- 30:17Tyler Johnson: Just hit… Park joke.
- 30:19Tad Eggleston: Don't mess with my duck… duck books.
- 30:22Phil: I would not. I would not. I would be a fool to either criticize or lampoon the work of Karl Barks.
- 30:30Tad Eggleston: Just so we're clear.
- 30:32Phil: Yes.
- 30:33Phil: Yeah.

- 34:02Phil: Absolutely, yeah.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: a must-buy. $18 for these 60 items, unless you have them all.
- 34:10Tad Eggleston: Or, or, like, a significant, significant portion.
- 34:13Tad Eggleston: It's just all but a must-buy. So, anyway,
- 34:20Tad Eggleston: I did actually manage to read some books this week.
- 34:23Phil: Yay!
- 34:24Tad Eggleston: I do legit have 3 amazing books, and they're not the only 3 books I read. I read
- 34:31Tad Eggleston: I think… 2 more?
- 34:35Tyler Johnson: Near.
- 34:35Tad Eggleston: No, 3 more.
- 34:37Phil: Okay.
- 34:38Tyler Johnson: That's like, it's like…
- 34:39Tad Eggleston: That's like me.
- 34:41Tyler Johnson: You know, my three books of the week would be the three that I read, usually.
- 34:48Tyler Johnson: And so…
- 34:50Tad Eggleston: End of Life No. 1 from Kyle Starks and Steve Pugh was just ridiculous. It's good, it's good.
- 34:55Tyler Johnson: It's so…
- 34:56Tad Eggleston: was so… so good.
- 35:00Tad Eggleston: it's Jeff meets Daredevil from Kelly Thompson and Geary Huru at Marvel slipped into my 2 spot.
- 35:10Tad Eggleston: An American Caper No. 4 from Danhauser, Laszlo, and David Lapham at Dark Horse. Wrap out my 3, so take a walk, Phil!
- 35:19Phil: Oh, yeah! So I had another week of not quite getting to the comic book store, you know, which means next week is an absolute must to, to, you know…
- 35:30Phil: Cause, and this is an early one, it's the… the, you know, last issue for now of the Power Fantasy, and, of course, we… we don't know if it's the last, last issue, or just the last issue for now, and, you know…
- 35:45Phil: But that's not now. I went to the library. I went to the library and said I picked up a gigantic stack of 16 whole volumes of a manga called Blue Period by Tsubasa Yamaguchi. It is about a slacker high school student who, you know, after having,
- 36:04Phil: you know, encounter with a couple of his classmates that really, change his views on art, decides to put his all into becoming an artist. And so, it's about, you know, him training and practicing, art skills and the artistic landscape of Japan. It's really fascinating, some really incre… like, they have… it's not just one artist doing the artworks of the characters.
- 36:27Phil: They have a bunch of different artists that they say, like, oh, it's this person in different styles, it's really incredible stuff.
- 36:34Phil: And it also got me thinking a lot. There is, a character who goes by, Yuka or Ryuji, who is, definitely genderqueer, and I say that specifically because
- 36:49Phil: their presentation, they're referred to in the story as a boy who wears women's clothing, and the first time I read this, it… it…
- 36:59Phil: kind of…
- 37:00Phil: it made me question, okay, what actually is happening here? You know, what is the identity of this character, and how they're being referred to? Is it,
- 37:11Phil: You know, is it in line with…
- 37:14Phil: with, you know, like, a positive representation. Is this gonna go in a good, healthy direction? Because…
- 37:21Phil: from a certain lens, it initially looks like the main character, misgenders them, but it's more complicated than that, naturally. And it got me thinking about,
- 37:32Phil: The lived experiences of genderqueer people throughout the world, and sometimes it can be a lot more complicated when realizing, okay, hey, this is not just
- 37:41Phil: a marginalized identity. This is a marginalized identity in another country that has its own cultural history and social norms, and even the aspect of language to consider in translation. So, it has sent me on the start of a research rabbit hole of trying to learn more about the experiences of gender poor people around the world.
- 38:03Phil: And what it's like growing up in different cultures from ours. So, that was… that was a fun little journey.
- 38:09Phil: That, I went on that leads into the One Piece race, where, you know, all that from one chapter.
- 38:17Phil: Big thoughts! Big thoughts from one chapter, but you know, since this is from the… this is my new, you know, I've… I've…
- 38:25Phil: I've put down Mob Psycho for now. I'll definitely…
- 38:29Phil: get back to Tower Dungeon, because Volume 4 has come in. But, yeah, this is gonna be… this is gonna be my, manga reading for the foreseeable future, until I can push through it.
- 38:38Tad Eggleston: Un Peace Race, was still becalmed. I'm still stuck on 626 chapters.
- 38:45Phil: You're waiting for me to catch up, you know?
- 38:47Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah.
- 38:48Phil: I gotta get, like, 600 chapters under my belt of something.
- 38:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Ted, we'll catch up quick. Well, don't you worry about it.
- 38:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, I suppose it's…
- 38:58Phil: It's… it's possible.
- 39:00Tad Eggleston: But.
- 39:01Tyler Johnson: I… I am willing to, officially announce I have stopped reading One Piece.
- 39:09Phil: How could you?
- 39:10Tyler Johnson: Well, it's too long. That's how… that's how it comes.
- 39:16Phil: Do you think they should have broken it up into a few pieces? More than just one? No? Just one?
- 39:21Tyler Johnson: No, it's in the name, with one piece.
- 39:24Phil: It's one piece, that's all you get. It's just one big book.
- 39:27Tyler Johnson: One big honkin' pile of…
- 39:30Tyler Johnson: No, it's good. It's not… no, it's… no, no, no, no, I don't mean that.
- 39:35Tyler Johnson: I just meant its sheer volume is daunting.
- 39:38Phil: It is, and that's where I would love for Tad to still hit the goal of being caught up on One Piece by the conclusion of One Piece, you know? At the very least, if you can read that final chapter.
- 39:52Tad Eggleston: And I still hope to.
- 39:53Phil: Yeah.
- 39:54Phil: It's, I, you know, I'll try to, I'll try to, since I don't… Summer is coming, spring break is coming. Okay, there we go.
- 40:02Tad Eggleston: These are both times that could lead to more reading.
- 40:09Tad Eggleston: But, this actually leads to my, my way, way, way…
- 40:20Tad Eggleston: what's the word I'm looking for? M-more…
- 40:25Tyler Johnson: OCD?
- 40:29Tad Eggleston: more disturbing…
- 40:36Phil: Reclivities?
- 40:38Tad Eggleston: Confession. Confession.
- 40:40Tyler Johnson: Oh, here we go.
- 40:42Phil: I love a good confession.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: And as we move into our great responsibility, 20th Century Men.
- 40:49Tad Eggleston: I did not manage to reread it this week, so you guys are…
- 40:55Phil: Kat, this is where…
- 40:56Tad Eggleston: You guys are on the spot.
- 40:58Phil: That's okay, you know, here… you… you… I think… I think you've deserved a break, you know?
- 41:05Tyler Johnson: You son of a bitch.
- 41:06Tad Eggleston: Whether I deserved one or not, I kinda wound up taking one.
- 41:11Tyler Johnson: Yeah. I mean, that's what happens?
- 41:12Phil: Pretty heavy book. You're holding them to the fire!
- 41:16Tyler Johnson: Yeah, what happened?
- 41:17Phil: Readboard!
- 41:17Tad Eggleston: It was cheap.
- 41:19Tyler Johnson: No, I'm just teasing. No, you had mentioned, you had alluded to that it was a… it was a week. Oh, I'm sure.
- 41:24Tad Eggleston: week.
- 41:25Phil: I'm sure.
- 41:26Phil: You're wheeling okay, you're traversing in your, in your automobiles, that's not…
- 41:32Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 41:32Phil: As long as…
- 41:33Tad Eggleston: The cars are good.
- 41:35Phil: Excellent.
- 41:36Tad Eggleston: You know, the week even ended, you know, ended pretty well.
- 41:40Phil: That's good.
- 41:42Tad Eggleston: But, it was just a, a long… Journey to get there.
- 41:49Phil: Yeah.
- 41:50Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 41:51Phil: And I mean, I can… I can understand why this might have been a slightly difficult book to read, right? You know, it's…
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: Oh, I mean, I don't think the book itself would have been hard to read if I'd started it. I love this book.
- 42:05Phil: Oh, it's great! I just mean that I couldn't stop thinking about, you know, wow, it's certainly a little surreal reading a book about World War III.
- 42:14Phil: Right now… Well, I mean, yes, there is that. Yeah.
- 42:19Phil: You know, which is to say that, yeah, this is an absolutely
- 42:26Phil: stunningly beautiful book. It… it knocked me off my socks in the…
- 42:32Tyler Johnson: Yeah, the painterly quality to the artwork is really cool.
- 42:36Phil: not just the painterly, but the way that… on the page, I swear there are so many pages where it feels like every panel's in a slightly different style.
- 42:44Tyler Johnson: A little bit, yup.
- 42:46Phil: Yeah.
- 42:46Tyler Johnson: Because look at… okay, I don't know if you can see my screen, but we're going from something like this.
- 42:52Phil: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, something with… it's a large.
- 42:55Tyler Johnson: And to…
- 42:56Phil: page somewhere.
- 42:57Tyler Johnson: And then to this, right? So we are switching styles completely, and I agree with you. It is… it is not… it's cool.
- 43:07Tyler Johnson: I enjoy this style of artwork like this, you know?
- 43:10Phil: For those, for those listening, Tyler is pointing at the, it goes from a, like, sun-soaked numb, clearly, like, a digital… a digital painting, sort of.
- 43:20Phil: sort of, style, to a very stark gray and line drawing, on the next page there. And then… so it's, it's where not just color, but also texture and, emphasis, like.
- 43:36Phil: The… the… when scenes are more linework-driven than, color and,
- 43:44Phil: And, rendering-driven, then it absolutely changes the mood.
- 43:49Tyler Johnson: Oh, yes, and then just a couple pages later, we jump to, Kabul… Cabal? Kabul? In 1987, and I'm gonna hold this up again. I know our readers can't see this, but again, the coloring completely.
- 44:03Phil: changes. Yeah, it does. Not just, in terms of palate, but also in terms of,
- 44:11Phil: Oh, I don't know the word for it,
- 44:15Phil: Yeah, texture, style, yeah, all of those sorts of things.
- 44:19Tyler Johnson: It looks great. I had a lot of fun with this story. Tad, you did read it at one point.
- 44:26Tad Eggleston: Oh, I read it… I read it long ago.
- 44:28Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 44:28Tad Eggleston: I… I love… well, because Dennis actually sent us at least the first issue ahead of time.
- 44:34Tyler Johnson: Right.
- 44:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I mean, we talked to him about this book right before it came out.
- 44:39Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 44:41Tad Eggleston: And, yeah, it's… it's a phenomenal book. I just… I… I… I don't have anything…
- 44:48Tad Eggleston: good to say about it today, because…
- 44:51Tyler Johnson: Nothing good to see. Nothing good to see.
- 44:54Tyler Johnson: Fresh in my head.
- 44:56Phil: It's understandable. No, I get it.
- 44:58Tad Eggleston: So I'm mostly letting you guys handle the great responsibility today. Stop calling me out, Tyler!
- 45:06Tad Eggleston: Putting me on the spot!
- 45:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah, man.
- 45:09Phil: I'll take that spot, you know.
- 45:11Tyler Johnson: Okay, but… So far, we've only been talking about the artwork, but the story itself is great.
- 45:19Phil: is also great, yeah.
- 45:20Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 45:21Tyler Johnson: Man, I… now that you pointed out the different shifts in artwork.
- 45:27Phil: Yeah.
- 45:27Tyler Johnson: It's every few pages, because now we're going to this yellow motif.
- 45:33Tyler Johnson: That was weird.
- 45:34Phil: There's… I swear, it's, so it's actually on page 3 that I really got sucked into it, where it looks like the first drawing is kind of a landscape, and could be, I mean, any number of artist styles, but then the second panel…
- 45:51Phil: Looks heavily influenced by, oh, Richard Corbin, followed by… it was funny, then, the silhouettes…
- 46:03Tyler Johnson: Are you on the Vietnam… are you on the Vietnam?
- 46:05Phil: Yeah, so it's in Vietnam, so this is page 3 of issue 1. The silhouettes remind me of Eduardo Riso, and then that last panel reminds me of Frank Miller, with the, like.
- 46:15Phil: blocky, shape work. So it's, it's, just… and then even on the page before that, the last panel of, mostly white space, and then some red…
- 46:25Tyler Johnson: A little bit of color in his… in his hand.
- 46:28Phil: Yeah, it reminds me of, I forget the guy's name, but the artist who worked with Hunter S. Thompson on a lot of his books, like Fear and Loathy in Las Vegas, so…
- 46:36Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that… oh my god, that'll come to me. That'll come to me. I know…
- 46:41Phil: I know he drew, artwork for a brand of beer that I've stocked on shelves, but it's just… this…
- 46:50Phil: I mean… Not only that, but there are some pages here that are… Just, like, elegantly stuffed.
- 46:58Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 46:59Phil: with both.
- 46:59Tyler Johnson: You ready?
- 47:00Phil: and captions, yeah.
- 47:01Tyler Johnson: Ralph Stedman.
- 47:02Phil: Ralph Stadman, yeah, okay, that sounds familiar. But there, there is a page that is just 12 panels
- 47:10Phil: without a grid. And I absolutely love that. I go nuts for, books that can…
- 47:16Tyler Johnson: Real free-flowing like that.
- 47:18Phil: Yeah, that can have, you know, variety between, okay, there are some books that kind of settle into… into a pace of, like, maybe 5 panels per page, and sometimes there'll be mostly a large one.
- 47:29Phil: This one is, like, it's a… in the same way the art style is constantly shifting and morphing to, display this, you know, multicultural… this worldview. It's truly trying to describe the whole world, not just one piece of it.
- 47:44Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 47:45Phil: That the… the storytelling techniques
- 47:48Phil: you know, it's very much in contrast with, I want to say it was issue 4? That, just had captions, mostly captions that were snippets of text through this world, and series of double-page spreads. So it's… it's one where just the mood…
- 48:05Phil: Is evolving and shifting
- 48:08Phil: continuously, and it is… it is breathtaking, it's stunning. This… my main thought when I finished reading this was, holy shit, I need to read that again.
- 48:18Phil: You know? Yeah.
- 48:19Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 48:20Phil: It's just… It is…
- 48:24Phil: Yeah, it is stunning. I… did this come… was this coming out in single issues? Let me check the date real quick. If it was 20…
- 48:29Tyler Johnson: I think so, I'm 23.
- 48:32Phil: No!
- 48:33Phil: So, late 22, and then the last issue is…
- 48:40Phil: February 2023. So, okay, so it did wrap up in early 2023, but yeah, there was so much buzz around this, that I had to go down and I had to hunt down the single issues a little late, but I have.
- 48:53Tyler Johnson: Did you?
- 48:53Phil: Yeah.
- 48:54Tyler Johnson: That was awesome. Yeah, and my copy of number 1 is, like.
- 48:58Phil: I think I accidentally spilled some water on it, because.
- 49:01Tyler Johnson: No!
- 49:02Phil: Yeah, I know, so it's a little… none of the pages are stuck together, but, it is a little bit warped, a little bit beat up, a little bit of a crunchy… I'd say it's like a… probably a 6 on the… on the quality… the grade scale, but, like, it's… it added to it, you know? It's like, I'm like…
- 49:18Tyler Johnson: Like, we are.
- 49:19Phil: It wouldn't… you have this, like, textured and gritty story about war, and it's on, like, warped paper that, you know, it's… that's just slightly, slightly…
- 49:32Phil: like.
- 49:34Phil: making louder noises as you turn it, it just… I don't know, it had a great feel to it. It's…
- 49:38Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 49:39Phil: one where, in the past, I have, gotten sad if I've ever accidentally, like, damaged a comic and blamed myself, but now I just kind of embrace it, and I'm like, you know what? It is what it is, I can still read it, and I actually am loving it more for being just a tiny bit messed up, because then it's like.
- 49:56Tyler Johnson: I can't. I can't get past that.
- 49:59Phil: Oh, no.
- 50:00Tyler Johnson: No, if it was… if mine was damaged, I would be… I would just probably get rid of it.
- 50:06Phil: Well…
- 50:07Tyler Johnson: Unless…
- 50:09Tyler Johnson: I just… I am so OCD, I can't handle if I wreck something. I would go buy a new one.
- 50:16Phil: Well, and that's… I mean, like, this book is so incredible that I'm like, oh, I would love to have a hardcover of this. I don't remember if they put out a hardcover before the trade or not, but…
- 50:26Tyler Johnson: I don't know.
- 50:27Phil: But that's… that's now… those are… I'm like, okay, if I can have an intact hardcover, I… I can live with slightly funky single issues here and there, just because…
- 50:36Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 50:37Phil: you know, I, I read them, I, I know I don't, bag and board them enough, so, it's, it's definitely one of those things that,
- 50:48Phil: That is… yeah.
- 50:50Tyler Johnson: Do you have piles… do you have piles of raw comics sitting around your house?
- 50:54Phil: I actually don't, because my wife would… would, go nuts with that. So they're… they're isolated to just by my bedside, so it's a couple stacks, and I actually mostly… I have a couple short boxes that… Okay. And I just… I just put them in there, so they're not…
- 51:11Phil: white piles. They're at least, you know, standing up in a short box, just without begging board.
- 51:17Tyler Johnson: Sure, sure.
- 51:18Phil: in their raw.
- 51:19Tad Eggleston: This is why I bag and board my comics before I leave the store.
- 51:25Phil: Hmm, yeah.
- 51:26Phil: Yeah, I, I don't know.
- 51:30Tyler Johnson: I go back and forth, like, there's some that are definitely not worth bagging and boarding, but I'm just so…
- 51:37Tyler Johnson: obsessive, I just do them every, every one of them.
- 51:40Tad Eggleston: I don't think there's any that's not worth bagging and boarding, just because I'm only doing it to keep them readable longer.
- 51:49Phil: Yeah, I mean.
- 51:50Tad Eggleston: This is a good way to store them.
- 51:52Phil: This, this is…
- 51:53Tad Eggleston: I'm getting…
- 51:53Phil: I mean…
- 51:54Tad Eggleston: Torn up by the cats.
- 51:55Phil: Well, your cats tear up comics?
- 51:59Tad Eggleston: My cat… I don't think they've torn up a comic yet, but, like, I don't want to put that to the test, because they do like tearing up things.
- 52:07Phil: They do, yeah. I mean, my guys… my guys have… thankfully, I don't think they've ever destroyed anything…
- 52:13Phil: You know, but they… again, they've… we got a nice, a really fun leaf-shaped rug that we put in the middle of the room, and they were like, we're gonna scratch this! And we're like, no, stop it! You jerks! This is ours, this is our nice thing!
- 52:29Tyler Johnson: You dicks! Yo. You don't even pay rent, get out of here!
- 52:34Phil: I say that.
- 52:36Phil: As one of my guys is lovingly sleeping in my lap right now.
- 52:40Tyler Johnson: That's funny. Oh, yeah.
- 52:42Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 52:44Tyler Johnson: But yeah…
- 52:45Phil: I just, I also wanted to give a shout out here. This is, probably my favorite depiction of an American president that I've read in a while.
- 52:56Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah?
- 52:57Phil: Where, yeah, in the sense that, okay, this is, like, a super-powered bastard Reagan was the.
- 53:04Tyler Johnson: since I got out of him, where…
- 53:07Phil: It's… so, it's also… it's an interesting choice to have your protagonist be Russian, you know, because…
- 53:16Tyler Johnson: True.
- 53:17Phil: I mean, Russia is… is…
- 53:19Phil: a pretty awful place, and while, you know, my heart goes out to the people who endure living there under the tyrannical regime, it's…
- 53:28Phil: As a state, has been,
- 53:32Phil: the aggressor and in the wrong, morally speaking, a lot. However, by shifting that perspective just a bit, I feel like
- 53:41Phil: that allows Camp to go in harder on how awful and terrible and evil America has been.
- 53:49Phil: You know, it's one of those books where you very quickly realize, even though this is a book about quote-unquote superheroes.
- 53:57Phil: These… these are not good people. These are…
- 54:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah, and doesn't that monster…
- 54:01Phil: world.
- 54:02Tad Eggleston: I mean, and yes, and, and, and…
- 54:05Tad Eggleston: The book, we're talking about monsters, but doesn't that also… raise… The question,
- 54:16Tad Eggleston: Are we perhaps overusing things like
- 54:20Tad Eggleston: Evil and terrible, and does that prevent us from seeing each other as humans?
- 54:26Tad Eggleston: And actually looking at The needs of different groups of people.
- 54:33Tyler Johnson: Hmm.
- 54:34Phil: So, I think it… I agree with you. I definitely agree with your sentiment that, that…
- 54:44Phil: Because of our culture of,
- 54:49Phil: combining evil with the unknown and with the other, that yes, that absolutely does that. I think that…
- 54:55Phil: In this book, it's a little bit…
- 54:59Tad Eggleston: Oh yeah, no, in this book, it's… it's… and that's why I made that caveat.
- 55:04Phil: Sure, sure, sure.
- 55:05Tad Eggleston: but… but by…
- 55:08Tad Eggleston: taking a slightly different perspective, and Kim does it, some other people have done it, by making us look at
- 55:16Tad Eggleston: America from an outsider view, and some other country from an insider view.
- 55:22Phil: Yeah.
- 55:22Tad Eggleston: Doesn't it do…
- 55:30Tad Eggleston: And, like, again, I didn't re-read it this week, I'm having to stretch back. Doesn't it do some…
- 55:37Tad Eggleston: Humanization of both sides.
- 55:40Phil: I… see, that's the thing.
- 55:42Tad Eggleston: Greater humanization of both sides.
- 55:44Phil: I did normally, so in an example of a work like Superman Red Sun, I think that's a book that both sides and tries to equate America and Russia in those ways. I think that in this one, I actually did not see a lot of humanity and sympathy in American characters.
- 56:04Phil: More or less at all.
- 56:05Phil: And that's kind of what I mean by it allows him to go in harder, where if instead…
- 56:12Phil: And so, well… I guess, if anything, it…
- 56:17Tad Eggleston: Given the fact that the reader lives in America.
- 56:21Phil: Generally, yeah.
- 56:22Tad Eggleston: Which… It tends to be,
- 56:27Tad Eggleston: focused on exceptionalism, isn't that alone a humanization of American characters?
- 56:34Phil: I think that…
- 56:36Tad Eggleston: say, oh, the bad guys can be American?
- 56:41Phil: Well, I… So…
- 56:46Tad Eggleston: Which doesn't make the other guys good guys.
- 56:51Phil: Yeah, I… so I think… I think that, yes.
- 56:53Tad Eggleston: Because that is one… I mean, think, think about how much hoopla we have over anybody who wants to support the rights of Palestinians.
- 57:03Phil: Right.
- 57:04Tad Eggleston: Okay, because, there's this idea that to question Israel in and of itself is anti-Semitic.
- 57:17Phil: Right.
- 57:18Phil: I mean, I don' agree with that.
- 57:19Tad Eggleston: There are…
- 57:20Phil: It's out there, yeah.
- 57:21Tad Eggleston: No, I, I don't, I don't either. Yeah. And there are absolutely some bad Palestinians.
- 57:28Phil: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, what you need to be able to get your head around is, yes.
- 57:36Tad Eggleston: Jews have gone through a lot, and yes.
- 57:41Tad Eggleston: Israel is probably necessary, at least now. Whether it was the best solution 70 years ago almost doesn't matter anymore.
- 57:51Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 57:52Tad Eggleston: We've reached a point where it can't go away.
- 57:58Tad Eggleston: Well, and…
- 57:59Phil: And real quick to cut in there, I think that instead, it's hard to imagine an America that does not support Israel anymore. I don't know if it's necessary, but for the direction that America's heading in, it is.
- 58:14Tad Eggleston: Well, I don't… I mean, that, that's, that's a… that's another question entirely.
- 58:20Phil: It is, it is, yeah.
- 58:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, I honestly think, at this point,
- 58:30Tad Eggleston: America stopping military support to Israel could be the best thing that happened to Israelis.
- 58:38Tad Eggleston: Because I don't think they would get overrun.
- 58:42Tad Eggleston: But I think that they would have to start negotiating for real. Yeah. I think they would need to start treating their neighbors as humans.
- 58:49Phil: Yeah.
- 58:50Phil: That… that is for sure. It's… I… I observed a similar argument to this online this week, where, you know, one person
- 58:59Phil: said, like, oh, you know, point out, like, two-state… two-state solutionists typically don't work. And the thought I had was, well, I mean, I think that a two-state solution would be possible if Israel didn't continue to provoke and agitate and aggress.
- 59:18Tad Eggleston: I mean, at this point… at this point, for a two-state solution to work.
- 59:22Tad Eggleston: They would not only have to get out of Gaza, they would have to seriously get out of the West Bank. The reason a two-state solution won't work is, like, there is no continuous.
- 59:33Phil: set of Palestinian…
- 59:35Tad Eggleston: held territory that's more than a couple square miles. Exactly, yes, yes. The reason…
- 59:41Phil: Yeah, the reason it doesn't work is because the… there is not space for the second state.
- 59:45Tad Eggleston: And frankly, it's debatable whether it was ever the best option.
- 59:50Phil: True. True.
- 59:52Tad Eggleston: Because if you had… a… a…
- 59:57Tad Eggleston: true democracy there, a Palestinian and Israeli democracy, where they each had votes.
- 1:00:08Tad Eggleston: That… Would be much harder for…
- 1:00:15Tad Eggleston: The rest of the region should just label as interlopers.
- 1:00:19Phil: Sure.
- 1:00:21Tad Eggleston: I mean, again.
- 1:00:23Phil: issue.
- 1:00:23Tad Eggleston: I mean, the, the…
- 1:00:26Tad Eggleston: And the other issue is you've got 70 years of history. But we're going down a rabbit hole that I didn't mean to go down.
- 1:00:34Phil: It's okay.
- 1:00:35Tad Eggleston: I was just… Well, so, so… These discussions in general are so much harder.
- 1:00:46Tad Eggleston: when…
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: When we refer to each other and think of each other in absolute terms.
- 1:01:01Phil: Yes, agreed. Agreed.
- 1:01:04Tad Eggleston: You know, the reason why Donald Trump still has 30% support is much less the idea that
- 1:01:20Tad Eggleston: That there are 30% of the people who actually approve of what he's doing.
- 1:01:28Tad Eggleston: And much more.
- 1:01:31Tad Eggleston: about… The fact that… There is a certain portion of the…
- 1:01:37Tad Eggleston: population that has been convinced over decades that Democrats are evil.
- 1:01:48Tad Eggleston: And they don't think about it harder than that.
- 1:01:51Tyler Johnson: That's true.
- 1:01:52Phil: And so I guess what I'm imagining is that by framing
- 1:01:58Phil: for mostly American readers, a story where America is…
- 1:02:03Phil: clearly and undisputably the enemy. What it does is ultimately humanize
- 1:02:12Phil: those seen as enemies by America, because you have to sort of invert the situation mentally.
- 1:02:18Phil: To find that.
- 1:02:19Tad Eggleston: And what I meant by saying it humanizes Americans is I think too often we think of ourselves as superhuman.
- 1:02:26Phil: Yeah.
- 1:02:28Phil: Yeah.
- 1:02:29Tad Eggleston: I didn't mean it makes us suddenly…
- 1:02:31Phil: Okay, okay.
- 1:02:32Tad Eggleston: Inhuman, too.
- 1:02:33Phil: Right, right. You were… you were… you were saying by humanizing us, it lowers us.
- 1:02:38Tad Eggleston: Lovely.
- 1:02:38Phil: Elevate.
- 1:02:38Tad Eggleston: Okay, interesting. It makes both sides equal.
- 1:02:44Tad Eggleston: Or more equal, rather than…
- 1:02:47Phil: See, and that's where… that's one.
- 1:02:48Tad Eggleston: Or at least makes you think of them in more equal terms. But you consider them based on their actions more than their…
- 1:02:58Tad Eggleston: Color or, or, or nationality.
- 1:03:01Phil: And so I think that…
- 1:03:03Phil: I actually don't see a lot of equality in this book. I think instead of saying that it equalizes.
- 1:03:09Tad Eggleston: Again, I haven't read it in forever.
- 1:03:11Phil: I know, I know, but I would say that I think it… I think it changes. It changes the way you perceive these, these nations and these people.
- 1:03:19Phil: So… because there's… this is also a book that is heavily about imbalances, and the differences between the parts of the world. So… but…
- 1:03:30Tad Eggleston: No.
- 1:03:31Phil: In terms of morality, yes, it definitely morally equalizes.
- 1:03:36Tad Eggleston: We have Tyler on a clock, and…
- 1:03:38Phil: Right.
- 1:03:39Tad Eggleston: We have breaking comic book news.
- 1:03:41Phil: Dun dun dun!
- 1:03:43Phil: Let's transition. I think we've… I feel like we've plumbed this mine.
- 1:03:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, and this is only in the launching soon phase, but friend of the podcast, Jonathan Bayliss's Next So Buttons.
- 1:03:55Tad Eggleston: Anthology of Autobio Comics. Who's My Daddy?
- 1:03:59Tad Eggleston: has just gone up to be followed on Kickstarter, so go over there and click that save button to be notified on launch.
- 1:04:10Tad Eggleston: Each story illustrated by a different artist, including Noah Van Skeiver, Banu Pratap, B. Muir, and Nathan Gilgood.
- 1:04:19Tad Eggleston: So, I, I love all of,
- 1:04:26Tad Eggleston: Jonathan Sobutton's story, so I am happy to see that he has another one on the way!
- 1:04:33Tad Eggleston: And, since that literally just pinged, I can say it's breaking comic news!
- 1:04:39Phil: freaking!
- 1:04:39Tad Eggleston: Even though this won't go up for… for, like, 24 hours, 36 hours, so, like, by the time anybody hears it, it'll be a day and a half old.
- 1:04:50Phil: comic series.
- 1:04:51Tyler Johnson: But we can… we've got it on recording here that we…
- 1:04:54Tyler Johnson: You reported it the minute it came out.
- 1:04:57Tad Eggleston: the, the, the.
- 1:04:58Phil: one of…
- 1:04:59Tad Eggleston: Daniel came in at… 817.
- 1:05:05Tyler Johnson: AM on…
- 1:05:06Phil: You had a… you had a…
- 1:05:07Tad Eggleston: Actually, the first one came in at $8.16, because…
- 1:05:11Tyler Johnson: February 21st.
- 1:05:13Tad Eggleston: in 2016.
- 1:05:13Tyler Johnson: basics.
- 1:05:14Tad Eggleston: Because Jonathan's smart. He sends out a project update from all of his previous projects to say that the new project is coming.
- 1:05:23Phil: Hmm?
- 1:05:23Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:05:24Phil: That is a pretty good move.
- 1:05:25Tad Eggleston: since I've backed a couple of them on Kickstarter, I got 2 messages right on top of each other.
- 1:05:31Phil: Nice.
- 1:05:32Tyler Johnson: Okay, cool.
- 1:05:33Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:05:36Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 1:05:38Tad Eggleston: Yes, I am moving into a theater today, I'm in a play.
- 1:05:43Tyler Johnson: And we, go on on Friday, so we are moving into our theater space today.
- 1:05:52Phil: Oh, wow. It's exciting.
- 1:05:54Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:05:55Tyler Johnson: So, if you guys want to see a really funny slapstick, you know, version of, Robin Hood.
- 1:06:02Tyler Johnson: Easy.
- 1:06:04Tad Eggleston: Is it Robin Hood and Godzilla?
- 1:06:06Tyler Johnson: No, no, but I do point… I do play Robin's accountant.
- 1:06:13Tyler Johnson: And so… But there's a lot of…
- 1:06:17Tad Eggleston: and, and, and Godzilla.
- 1:06:20Phil: They didn't have the license, Oni still has it. Or, IDW still has it.
- 1:06:26Tyler Johnson: Yeah. So anyway, I play… I play a character who is David of Doncaster, and I… and I keep track of Robin's money.
- 1:06:37Phil: Okay.
- 1:06:38Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:06:39Phil: So, before they give to the poor, they give to you.
- 1:06:41Tyler Johnson: Yes, and then I keep strict notes of it throughout the play, and it's just… it's pretty funny.
- 1:06:48Phil: That doesn't work.
- 1:06:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:06:50Tad Eggleston: Alright. Three books we hope will be spectacular. I'm gonna lead off with a couple that I know are spectacular. All Living from Roman Murdoff, a graphic novel at Fanographics.
- 1:07:02Tad Eggleston: Was just fabulous, and I need to… he was one of two interviews that I had to push to buy a car, and I need to get that reset up.
- 1:07:13Tad Eggleston: Cause I was excited for it, but it wasn't gonna work.
- 1:07:17Tad Eggleston: And then, The Peril of the Brutal Dark, an Ezra Cain Mystery, number one from Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips. Also recently announced…
- 1:07:28Tad Eggleston: Chris Condon has a book.
- 1:07:31Tad Eggleston: with… Charlie Adlard.
- 1:07:35Phil: Oh yeah, I did see that announcement.
- 1:07:37Tad Eggleston: sharp. Adlard.
- 1:07:39Phil: I, I heard Jacob Phillips say that he was drawing a new issue of That Texas Blood, so… Yep. Yep, so their stuff is rolling.
- 1:07:47Tad Eggleston: Yes! So… so my rock star buddy is… is… Adlard even had a quote about having wanted to work with Chris for a long time, so…
- 1:07:58Phil: Really? Wow. Good for him, good for Chris.
- 1:08:01Tad Eggleston: That's so cool. Peril of the Brutal Dark and Ezra Kane Mystery No. 1, Chris Kahn and Jacob Phillips is as,
- 1:08:11Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm almost glad that I'd read it already, because my top 3 books for this week are bangers as well, and I didn't put Jesse Lonergan or Save Now on my list.
- 1:08:21Tad Eggleston: What? So no Miss Truesdale, and no save now on my top 3 list, because we've got Is Ted OK? number 1 from Dave Chisholm at Mad Cave. Absolute Martian Manhunter, number 9 from Dennis Camp and Javier Rodriguez at DC, and…
- 1:08:42Tad Eggleston: Russell Heist No. 3 from Kyle Starks at Image.
- 1:08:46Tad Eggleston: So yeah, really, really good book of wheat, but… Week of books, and…
- 1:08:54Tad Eggleston: Phil didn't even mention Power Fantasy No. 16, which is just.
- 1:08:58Phil: I did my walk, I did my walk.
- 1:09:00Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:09:01Tyler Johnson: Ed.
- 1:09:01Phil: I didn't have a third down here.
- 1:09:03Tyler Johnson: I'm good. Yep.
- 1:09:04Phil: It's not been mentioned.
- 1:09:07Tyler Johnson: Hands up, I have nothing to do with this.
- 1:09:11Phil: On that note, my, giant-sized trade waiter graphic novel pick is a little book called The War by Garthy Ennis, Becky Klunes.
- 1:09:22Phil: It sounds… this team, Tamara Bonvillain and Pat Brasu from Boom, it sounds awesome. I love that a book called The War was published by Boom.
- 1:09:30Tad Eggleston: It was… it was serialized in.
- 1:09:33Phil: Booms the war.
- 1:09:35Tad Eggleston: high darkness.
- 1:09:37Phil: Oh, okay.
- 1:09:40Tad Eggleston: It's really good stuff.
- 1:09:41Phil: I will definitely have to, see if this hits Hoopla or something, because I, I love Becky Kluman's work so much, absolutely incredible, and… colored by Von Villen, and I haven't read some Ennis in a while, so, so yeah, I'd be in the mood for it.
- 1:09:58Tad Eggleston: Yep, yep. I have Becky Clunan art on my wall. She did a Pearl Jam poster.
- 1:10:04Phil: That's so cool.
- 1:10:05Phil: That's awesome.
- 1:10:06Tad Eggleston: I think… I think… I… I don't often actually take stuff to C2E2 to get
- 1:10:15Tad Eggleston: signed, but I think I might have to stick that in a tube and take it with me.
- 1:10:19Phil: Hell yeah. That'd be awesome. To get Becky to sign it. That'd be so cool.
- 1:10:24Tad Eggleston: I mean, a lot… a lot of the stuff I… well, and I might actually have to take my,
- 1:10:29Tad Eggleston: Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman in two, because that's a Terry Moore poster.
- 1:10:35Phil: Very cool. And I see you got a 11.
- 1:10:38Tad Eggleston: A lot of the stuff I have in my wall, or on my walls is already signed, because it's, like, prints and stuff that I got at C2E2, or various places.
- 1:10:49Phil: Can you imagine buying those and be like, no, no, no, don't autograph it, please?
- 1:10:53Tyler Johnson: Joe!
- 1:10:54Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, I see…
- 1:10:55Tyler Johnson: Sometimes afterwards.
- 1:10:56Tad Eggleston: So remember to ask.
- 1:10:57Phil: I know that, I understand.
- 1:10:58Tad Eggleston: Because not everybody's good at remembering to just offer.
- 1:11:02Phil: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:06Tad Eggleston: But, yeah.
- 1:11:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:11:11Tyler Johnson: Cool. Alright, well, I'm gonna get rolling, guys, but…
- 1:11:16Tyler Johnson: Let's… let's take us out. Are we… we're good, right?
- 1:11:19Tyler Johnson: We're at the end. We're at the end.
- 1:11:21Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 1:11:22Tyler Johnson: It's the end of the world. Okay, no.
- 1:11:25Phil: This is the end.
- 1:11:27Phil: and my…
- 1:11:29Tad Eggleston: That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes in an airplane, many birds is not afraid.
- 1:11:34Phil: I love how we.
- 1:11:35Tad Eggleston: at C2E2 this year.
- 1:11:37Tyler Johnson: Three different songs.
- 1:11:38Phil: Yup.
- 1:11:39Tyler Johnson: Anyway, guys, we'll… I'm gonna try it. Here we go. We'll catch you… After next page.
- 1:11:46Tyler Johnson: Later.
- 1:11:49Phil: Where's the duh?
