- 0:00Speaker 1: It was a productive first week for the Patriots and
- 0:02Speaker 1: free agency, but how's it going to affect their draft plans?
- 0:04Speaker 2: That's what we're going to break down here on Patriots
- 0:06Speaker 2: Draft Countdown.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Really Thurday for great the New England Patriots.
- 0:10Speaker 1: What welcome everybody to Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy. Bud Light is the
- 0:19Speaker 1: official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots. And this
- 0:21Speaker 1: is our first in studio show of the new season. Guys,
- 0:24Speaker 1: exciting back on the draft mode, I guess you would
- 0:27Speaker 1: call it. So first things we're going to start off
- 0:29Speaker 1: with is we talked, you know, after the Super Bowl
- 0:31Speaker 1: all kinds of needs that the team might have. Now
- 0:34Speaker 1: they've gone out in free agency and really they've kind
- 0:36Speaker 1: of swapped one for one guys left they brought another
- 0:38Speaker 1: guy in to fill that, so, you know, not a
- 0:40Speaker 1: whole lot of movement upwards, but it feels like they've
- 0:42Speaker 1: kind of built a damn.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I guess they're not hemorrhaging any players.
- 0:45Speaker 1: But ev I want to start with you just overall,
- 0:48Speaker 1: what's your big takeaway of how this free agency period
- 0:51Speaker 1: is going to affect the draft?
- 0:52Speaker 4: What's the headline for you.
- 0:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you kind of nailed it there as
- 0:55Speaker 5: it sort of was, you know, let's tread water and
- 0:57Speaker 5: free agency and set up a big draft, and I
- 0:59Speaker 5: think specifically at a lot of different positions, they didn't
- 1:02Speaker 5: resign any of their in house free agents, which I
- 1:06Speaker 5: find pretty fascinating coming off as team that won fourteen
- 1:10Speaker 5: games and made the Super Bowl. But when I look
- 1:12Speaker 5: at it at the spots of players that they let walk,
- 1:16Speaker 5: you know, Austin Hooper at tight end, Jelanie Devai and
- 1:19Speaker 5: Jack Gibbons out at linebacker, Anthony Jennings and Kaylevon Chase.
- 1:23Speaker 6: On out at edge rusher.
- 1:24Speaker 5: These are all positions that I kind of expect to
- 1:26Speaker 5: be on their radar in the draft. You're just adding
- 1:28Speaker 5: one more with Viderien Lowe at offensive tackle. So the
- 1:32Speaker 5: idea to me, it looks like is let's create opportunity
- 1:36Speaker 5: and let's create potential roles for us to go out
- 1:39Speaker 5: and draft players at tight end, at offensive tackle, at
- 1:42Speaker 5: edge rusher, at linebacker, that you know you have pathways
- 1:46Speaker 5: for these guys to contribute and make the roster, because
- 1:49Speaker 5: if you just bring everybody back, it's going to be
- 1:52Speaker 5: hard to find competition and spots for eleven draft picks.
- 1:56Speaker 5: You know, maybe they don't make all those picks, but
- 1:58Speaker 5: it looks to me like they're kind of setting up
- 2:00Speaker 5: for opening some pathways for some of these younger guys
- 2:04Speaker 5: to step into some roles.
- 2:05Speaker 2: He's just what stood out to you must about the
- 2:07Speaker 2: free agent class.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I mean, was there one particular signing that that you
- 2:10Speaker 1: saw that you weren't expecting or just you know, something that.
- 2:12Speaker 7: That surprised you.
- 2:13Speaker 8: But the one that stood out was Romeo Dobbs. Just
- 2:15Speaker 8: I know, the receiver positions in a question here Aj Brown,
- 2:19Speaker 8: we've been hearing about that.
- 2:20Speaker 7: Lets defon Diggs go.
- 2:22Speaker 8: Dobbs is a very good NFL players, not like the
- 2:24Speaker 8: sexy number one wide receiver, but he is a guy
- 2:27Speaker 8: that will like make an instant impact. So just kind
- 2:30Speaker 8: of interested to see if he's going to be your
- 2:32Speaker 8: one for the season or what are we gonna do
- 2:33Speaker 8: with that?
- 2:34Speaker 5: So thinks out to me, the blocking titans and fullbacks
- 2:38Speaker 5: not for me, Not.
- 2:39Speaker 4: For me, it's real, it's real football there.
- 2:43Speaker 8: I guess the edge rushers, but no receivers.
- 2:45Speaker 6: He's messing with you.
- 2:46Speaker 1: You mentioned receivers, and you know later we've got almost
- 2:49Speaker 1: a half hour long segment where we break down a
- 2:51Speaker 1: lot of the wide receivers here. It's always a position
- 2:53Speaker 1: we love to watch and to fantasize about drafting it
- 2:55Speaker 1: that elusive number one. But what was interesting to me
- 2:58Speaker 1: is you rattled off those positions and when we were
- 3:01Speaker 1: in India at the combine, we heard, you know, from
- 3:03Speaker 1: Elliot Woolf Mike Frabel mentioned things like the tight end
- 3:05Speaker 1: depth is great in this class, the defensive ends, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: this is a great edge class. Which is the need
- 3:10Speaker 1: that you know that they admit. Those are two that
- 3:13Speaker 1: jump right to the forefront of mind. I also could
- 3:15Speaker 1: say linebacker, we've seen you know, there's a good off
- 3:17Speaker 1: the ball linebacker class. Is it an accident that some
- 3:21Speaker 1: of these signings that they did did feel like placeholders
- 3:24Speaker 1: at positions that are kind of filled with talented players
- 3:26Speaker 1: in this draft?
- 3:27Speaker 6: No, And I.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Think the what you feel a little bit more optimistic
- 3:32Speaker 5: about because I think when I rattle all those things off,
- 3:34Speaker 5: people are like, wow, that's kind of a lie, right
- 3:36Speaker 5: to leave all of this to the draft, But it's
- 3:38Speaker 5: not starting players, Like they're not expecting them to draft
- 3:42Speaker 5: a tackle in the second or third round.
- 3:44Speaker 6: That's going to have to start as a rookie.
- 3:46Speaker 5: They're expecting to draft a tackle in the second round
- 3:48Speaker 5: or third round that's going to sit behind Will Campbell
- 3:50Speaker 5: and Morgan Moses and learn for a year. So they've
- 3:53Speaker 5: done a nice job of being able to kind of
- 3:55Speaker 5: set up a pipeline here. Of Okay, we still have
- 3:57Speaker 5: Hunter Henry on the roster, so if we draft a
- 4:00Speaker 5: tight end on Day two or early Day three, that
- 4:03Speaker 5: player is now competing to be the backup tight end
- 4:06Speaker 5: and not the starting tight end, So you don't put
- 4:08Speaker 5: as much pressure on the rookie. And I think that
- 4:11Speaker 5: that's sort of where they've gotten themselves into trouble in
- 4:14Speaker 5: recent years, is that they're expecting Jalen Polk or Caden
- 4:19Speaker 5: Wallace or one of those players to kind of be
- 4:21Speaker 5: a savior and come in and fix a position of
- 4:24Speaker 5: glaring need. I don't see that with this roster. I
- 4:27Speaker 5: see them being able to kind of set up here
- 4:29Speaker 5: for the future instead.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Now, Tiez, you and Chris Cassidy coming up. You broke
- 4:32Speaker 1: down a bunch of mock drafts. Just you don't have
- 4:33Speaker 1: to spoil the segment, but give me a headline of
- 4:36Speaker 1: what did you guys see from the mock draft set
- 4:37Speaker 1: out there, I know there's a lot of edge.
- 4:39Speaker 4: That's what we've been talking about.
- 4:40Speaker 7: Is that what you say, it's a lot of edge.
- 4:41Speaker 8: There's a bit of surprise of offensive line, but I
- 4:44Speaker 8: think edge it's really just you can't really go wrong
- 4:47Speaker 8: that late in the draft. There's so many options, there's
- 4:49Speaker 8: no correct position. So you want to get a guy
- 4:51Speaker 8: who can have a not immediate impact, but solid impact.
- 4:55Speaker 8: And it really seems like edge is where that's the
- 4:56Speaker 8: opportunity at the thirty first pick.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the opportunity of to have like a
- 5:00Speaker 1: third guy and you know, maybe you have your your
- 5:03Speaker 1: top two guys with Jones and hopefully Harold Landry's able
- 5:06Speaker 1: to come back and you know, take that down. But
- 5:07Speaker 1: then if you have a guy like let's just say
- 5:09Speaker 1: cash Is Howell is a guy that I think everybody
- 5:11Speaker 1: looks at one.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Like he kind of plays like Mike Rabele likes.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, you plug him in, not the pressure
- 5:16Speaker 1: to come in and play three downs right out of
- 5:19Speaker 1: the gate, but the ability to come in working as
- 5:21Speaker 1: a pass rusher, see what he can do, get his
- 5:23Speaker 1: feet wet, maybe somebody gets hurt and he has to
- 5:25Speaker 1: get thrust into it. That sounds like the plan even
- 5:28Speaker 1: like at a position like tight end two.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Yeah. I think that's the interesting part about edge in particular,
- 5:32Speaker 5: and I'd also say the same maybe a little bit
- 5:34Speaker 5: about wide receiver. But at edge specifically, are they looking
- 5:37Speaker 5: for a guy that has a certain skill set to
- 5:40Speaker 5: contribute in twenty six? Are they really thinking about this
- 5:43Speaker 5: is going to be a starter for us down the line?
- 5:45Speaker 5: Because there are is guys in this edge class that
- 5:47Speaker 5: are kind of pass russ specialists, like a Romelo Height
- 5:50Speaker 5: for example from Texas Tech. He's like two hundred and
- 5:53Speaker 5: forty pounds, but he can really rush the passer. But
- 5:55Speaker 5: do I project that as a player that's going to
- 5:57Speaker 5: be a three down player in the NFL.
- 5:59Speaker 6: Probably not.
- 6:00Speaker 5: He's probably more a third down pass rush type of role.
- 6:03Speaker 6: There's the same sort of thing.
- 6:05Speaker 5: But on the other end of the spectrum in terms
- 6:07Speaker 5: of edge, you know, guys at stuff the run and
- 6:09Speaker 5: play the edge like you know dds from Penn State,
- 6:11Speaker 5: you know big do kind of like an Anthony Jennings
- 6:13Speaker 5: type or are they trying to sort of you know,
- 6:16Speaker 5: split the atom there and get a guy that they
- 6:18Speaker 5: feel like really has like three down starter upsides. So
- 6:21Speaker 5: I'm interested to see if they're looking for more of
- 6:24Speaker 5: a rotational player or if they're looking for a guy
- 6:26Speaker 5: that they really feel like has a ceiling of every
- 6:29Speaker 5: down player because you know, I think Draymond Jones and
- 6:32Speaker 5: you pay him that contract is probably going to play
- 6:34Speaker 5: a ton. But like, is there a scenario where you know,
- 6:36Speaker 5: maybe you knock Caraen Blandry off the field for a
- 6:38Speaker 5: more dynamic edgeresher on third down?
- 6:41Speaker 6: Is that the type of guy that they're looking for.
- 6:43Speaker 5: So it's a there's so many options that it's kind
- 6:45Speaker 5: of just to pick your flavor thing of what exactly
- 6:48Speaker 5: it is that you're looking for. But you know, cash
- 6:50Speaker 5: is howl mesidor you know, players like that are guys
- 6:54Speaker 5: that project as full time players in the league. Once
- 6:58Speaker 5: you get it past that, I think you're kind of
- 6:59Speaker 5: get into he's really good at this one thing, and
- 7:02Speaker 5: it just depends on which one thing they want to
- 7:04Speaker 5: be really good at.
- 7:05Speaker 4: All Right, well, we got a packed show for you.
- 7:06Speaker 1: We're gonna have a bunch of packed shows all spring,
- 7:09Speaker 1: breaking down all the different position groups. Of course, we
- 7:10Speaker 1: start off with quarterback, wide receiver. The first we got
- 7:13Speaker 1: Matista and Chris Cassidy. You can break down the trends
- 7:15Speaker 1: in all the latest mock drafts.
- 7:20Speaker 8: What's up by Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown podcast.
- 7:23Speaker 8: Mati's bound here, Chris Cassidy doing guys, it's the draft, Chris,
- 7:27Speaker 8: Patriots reigning AFC champions. That being said, not for the franchise,
- 7:32Speaker 8: but for us, we're in unfamiliar territory. The past two
- 7:34Speaker 8: years Patriots are picking top five, all right, now we're
- 7:37Speaker 8: pick thirty one. It's a little bit different. So what
- 7:39Speaker 8: we're gonna do here is go over some mock drafts.
- 7:41Speaker 8: We're gonna do our own. But right now, when you
- 7:44Speaker 8: mock and you're a pick thirty one, it's a bit
- 7:46Speaker 8: of a crap shoot. You can't really go wrong with
- 7:48Speaker 8: the position, but you want the right player. So Chris
- 7:51Speaker 8: as I run through the Patriots mock draft tracker. Right now,
- 7:54Speaker 8: the three consensus picks are Zion Young, TJ. Parker, Casey
- 7:58Speaker 8: Conception on. What are your thoughts on let's go with
- 8:01Speaker 8: t J Parker.
- 8:02Speaker 7: I really like TJ.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Parker.
- 8:03Speaker 9: I mean mentioned eleven and a half sacked, were talking
- 8:05Speaker 9: about earlier eleven and a half sacks with Clemson this
- 8:08Speaker 9: past season. I mean, he's he's a stunt off the edge,
- 8:10Speaker 9: and I think I really do believe the Patriots are
- 8:13Speaker 9: going to focus that edge position in this draft. I
- 8:17Speaker 9: don't know if it's gonna be the first round of
- 8:18Speaker 9: the second round. Personal opinion, I think you should be
- 8:21Speaker 9: the first round Matisse, but TJ. Parker is a guy
- 8:24Speaker 9: to keep an eye on. Another guy that I really
- 8:26Speaker 9: like personally is a key messador from Miami.
- 8:30Speaker 3: First round talent. In my opinion, I think there's a
- 8:33Speaker 3: chance you could fall to the Patriots.
- 8:35Speaker 9: I've heard some rooms you could be like early second
- 8:37Speaker 9: round guy, so I mean, who knows.
- 8:39Speaker 3: But I really like a key messador as well.
- 8:43Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, Chris, so what you think right now
- 8:44Speaker 8: is the edge? And I mean listening Kaalvon good season,
- 8:48Speaker 8: He's not back right, Harold Landry's getting up there in age.
- 8:50Speaker 7: So edge is a key position.
- 8:53Speaker 8: I have Zion Young, like two picks on the tracker said,
- 8:56Speaker 8: this guy's a ball.
- 8:57Speaker 7: He's from Missouri. He's a dog. I mean you watch
- 8:59Speaker 7: his tape and he's just blowing guys over.
- 9:02Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah, he's a beast. And again, you need a
- 9:05Speaker 9: guy who can get to the quarterback. But I think
- 9:07Speaker 9: what the Patriots lacked this past season was somebody that
- 9:09Speaker 9: can help in the run game from the edge.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Yep, Like you had these.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Guys that like Calevon at seven and a half sacks
- 9:16Speaker 3: past year. Don't call me on.
- 9:17Speaker 9: I'm pretty sure that's what and I think that's that's
- 9:21Speaker 9: a good thing. But I still think he lacked a
- 9:23Speaker 9: little bit of that running game presence and I think
- 9:26Speaker 9: that's where the Patriots needed to keep getting better at.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And I think Zion Young is a good person to fill.
- 9:32Speaker 7: That role in the way.
- 9:33Speaker 8: So Chris edge Rusher, that's what you're thinking. For me,
- 9:36Speaker 8: My thing with the first round pick is you need
- 9:38Speaker 8: to hit the ground running like we saw a Drake May,
- 9:40Speaker 8: we saw Will Campbell like they they're playing. You need
- 9:42Speaker 8: to be a starter. That being said, I feel like
- 9:44Speaker 8: we talk about this every year. Patriots are also looking
- 9:47Speaker 8: at some receivers. Can't believe we're at this again. And
- 9:49Speaker 8: it's interesting because now we're picking so late that for
- 9:52Speaker 8: me personally, like I'm not sure if I'm taking a
- 9:54Speaker 8: receiver there. But the name that keeps coming up is
- 9:56Speaker 8: Casey Concepts you on from text day A and.
- 9:58Speaker 9: M Yeah, I mean case he's all around a great receiver.
- 10:01Speaker 9: He's he's a beast, and he's one of those guys.
- 10:04Speaker 9: He's gonna come and he's fast. You can really play
- 10:06Speaker 9: the slot. You can put him outside of you and
- 10:07Speaker 9: burn like, put him where you want. I kind of
- 10:10Speaker 9: see more inside as a receiver. You know, Patriots could
- 10:13Speaker 9: do multiple different things at that sort of situation. I
- 10:16Speaker 9: think he's gonna go in top fifteen disease, all right,
- 10:18Speaker 9: I do. I think Casey's gonna jump up in this draft.
- 10:21Speaker 9: I think he's a stud wide receiver. I think he's
- 10:23Speaker 9: gonna show it kind of as a time regress leading.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Up to the draft. And I really.
- 10:29Speaker 9: Would be a blessing if Casey Concepcion was on the
- 10:32Speaker 9: draft board at thirty one for the Patriots. Yes, so
- 10:34Speaker 9: I think the Patriots take him. Yes, I don't know
- 10:37Speaker 9: if that's in real life.
- 10:37Speaker 7: So the mocks keep having him.
- 10:39Speaker 8: But that being said, Chris, in the years past, you
- 10:41Speaker 8: got you got at Buka, you got JSN Like does
- 10:43Speaker 8: he fall in line with those players?
- 10:45Speaker 7: Does he have Thata Calber? Do you? Yeah? I mean
- 10:47Speaker 7: he very well could be.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I think people are just very high on him this year.
- 10:50Speaker 9: I think he's just he's the name that's been falling
- 10:52Speaker 9: around the draft sort of this whole offseason.
- 10:55Speaker 3: So again, I think he's.
- 10:57Speaker 9: Gonna keep keep climbing the ranks in this draft, and
- 11:01Speaker 9: it'll be interesting to see if he's there at thirty one.
- 11:03Speaker 7: But so you hope he is. Ideally it'd be great. Ideally,
- 11:07Speaker 7: it'd be great.
- 11:08Speaker 8: All right, So Chris, like, we're gonna keep doing this section.
- 11:10Speaker 8: We're gonna do some of our own mocks. But right
- 11:12Speaker 8: now in our first section, you're on the clock at
- 11:15Speaker 8: thirty one.
- 11:15Speaker 7: What are you doing?
- 11:16Speaker 9: I'm going edge. I think I think you need to
- 11:18Speaker 9: focus at that edge position. You know, like we talked
- 11:22Speaker 9: about it. You lost Kaylevon. You know Harold he's great
- 11:27Speaker 9: off the edge when fully healthy, but he's a little
- 11:29Speaker 9: little injured prone in the playoffs, so you know you
- 11:32Speaker 9: need a little bit of help there.
- 11:33Speaker 3: You also, you have a guy.
- 11:34Speaker 9: In Harold who can help train these young young edge
- 11:37Speaker 9: rushers and kind of grow their development a little bit.
- 11:39Speaker 9: And you brought in Draymont Jones from the Ravens in
- 11:42Speaker 9: free agency, another vet like these guys can help this
- 11:46Speaker 9: young edge rusher become the best version of himself.
- 11:49Speaker 8: All right, cool, Chris, Right now, I'm gonna trade the pick.
- 11:51Speaker 8: But we got plenty more time to go over this.
- 11:53Speaker 8: But we talked about Casey conception on guys. We're gonna
- 11:56Speaker 8: talk more about receivers in the next section.
- 12:01Speaker 1: All right, we're kicking things off here with quarterbacks and
- 12:03Speaker 1: wide receivers, guys. I don't think we need to spend
- 12:05Speaker 1: a lot of time on the quarterback, of course, Paul.
- 12:08Speaker 1: They signed Tommy.
- 12:08Speaker 2: DeVito, He's signed up Josh Dobbs with Drake May.
- 12:12Speaker 4: We got the depth chart taken care.
- 12:14Speaker 10: Of, all right, So if you're going to look at
- 12:16Speaker 10: this from a patriot's perspective, then you probably you probably
- 12:21Speaker 10: said you probably don't need any more. Now, if they
- 12:24Speaker 10: decide to move on from Dobbs and they're looking for
- 12:27Speaker 10: another sort of developmental quarterback in the draft, maybe a
- 12:30Speaker 10: Day three pick, they have a bunch of Day three guys.
- 12:35Speaker 10: I don't know if there's a lot here for you necessarily.
- 12:38Speaker 10: I don't know where Drew Aller is going to go.
- 12:40Speaker 10: They kid out of Penn State, who I do think
- 12:42Speaker 10: has some tools, as Evan would call him tools, but
- 12:47Speaker 10: he has not really put it together at the college
- 12:49Speaker 10: level in terms of refinement and consistency.
- 12:52Speaker 4: But if you could get.
- 12:53Speaker 10: Him, you know sometime and you know, like I don't know,
- 12:56Speaker 10: around four round five, you know, probably five, maybe that
- 13:02Speaker 10: would be a guy that would intrigue me. But most
- 13:04Speaker 10: of the rest of these guys, you know, Tailing Green,
- 13:07Speaker 10: you know, unbelievable combined, but not really a quarterback.
- 13:10Speaker 1: If anybody stands out like lower end guys before we
- 13:12Speaker 1: get into there, yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 5: I mean, I think Galler is probably gonna be a
- 13:15Speaker 5: top one hundred pick. Still that's the third round for me,
- 13:18Speaker 5: maybe fourth round. Maybe he gets into the fourth round.
- 13:20Speaker 5: You mentioned Taylor Green. I think the biggest thing with him,
- 13:23Speaker 5: and not to no disrespect, because I think he can
- 13:25Speaker 5: play quarterback. But you know, he comes in and you
- 13:28Speaker 5: draft him plays quarterback at first, you test him out
- 13:31Speaker 5: there if it doesn't work out there, he's such an
- 13:33Speaker 5: exceptional athlete, like is he a Terrell Prior type that
- 13:35Speaker 5: can maybe change positions and be a wide receiver.
- 13:38Speaker 6: I don't mean to do that.
- 13:39Speaker 5: I think it's disrespectful sometimes when people do that, but
- 13:42Speaker 5: it's just.
- 13:43Speaker 6: An exceptional athlete, no doubt. He's an exceptional athlete, no doubt.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Now in terms of you know deeper, guys, I think
- 13:51Speaker 5: what the question is is that you're asking is are
- 13:53Speaker 5: you really drafting somebody to.
- 13:55Speaker 6: Be the backup, a pure backup?
- 13:58Speaker 5: Like, again, no disrespect Chase Daniel, right Like, are you
- 14:01Speaker 5: drafting someone Brian Hoyer that's going to be the backup for.
- 14:04Speaker 6: The next ten years?
- 14:05Speaker 5: Or are you looking still for Joe Milton who has
- 14:07Speaker 5: a little bit more upside and a little bit more
- 14:10Speaker 5: of those traits. I would say Taylor Green's probably more
- 14:12Speaker 5: in the Joe Milton category.
- 14:15Speaker 6: You know, a guy like Diego Pavia from.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Vanderbilt is maybe more in I think this guy's going
- 14:19Speaker 5: to have a ten year NFL career as a as
- 14:21Speaker 5: a backup quarterback. You know. I think that's really where
- 14:24Speaker 5: you're kind of out with that class. Is are we
- 14:26Speaker 5: at the point now, which I think we probably are
- 14:28Speaker 5: with Drake May that he's the starter forever as long
- 14:31Speaker 5: as they'll be a New England Patriot, as long as
- 14:33Speaker 5: they can keep him a New England Patriot. So you
- 14:36Speaker 5: might as well, you know, look at a Caid club
- 14:38Speaker 5: Nick from Clemson, or Diego Pavia from Vanderbilt or one
- 14:42Speaker 5: of these guys that has a chance to be a
- 14:43Speaker 5: long term backup.
- 14:45Speaker 1: All right, well let's let's jump into the top two guys,
- 14:46Speaker 1: because tis I mean, Fernana Mendoza probably gonna be the
- 14:49Speaker 1: first overall pick.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Could chance the Patriots see him this year, you know
- 14:52Speaker 2: with the Raiders.
- 14:53Speaker 1: And then Ty Simpson another guy who probably first rounder,
- 14:56Speaker 1: but more maybe more of a developmental guy. We know,
- 14:58Speaker 1: seems like the Jets need a quarterback. But let's just
- 15:00Speaker 1: start with Mendoza. What a year National championship heisman. I mean,
- 15:03Speaker 1: he saw him at the combine, looks the part completely
- 15:07Speaker 1: under control.
- 15:08Speaker 4: He's gonna be a good player.
- 15:09Speaker 7: Yeah, I just take him for the leadership.
- 15:11Speaker 8: You know, he's big locker room guy, led that team,
- 15:14Speaker 8: really changed the culture there with their coach. Yeah, probably
- 15:19Speaker 8: going to be the Raiders guy. I think they're gonna
- 15:20Speaker 8: have to steal with him. Something that's interested. With Mendozas,
- 15:23Speaker 8: I'd like to see where you think he would have
- 15:24Speaker 8: went last year.
- 15:25Speaker 7: Like with cam Ward, I just don't know.
- 15:27Speaker 6: I think he number one overall.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Yeah, the Drake May draft is probably more of a
- 15:31Speaker 5: conversation between those three guys, but I think we would
- 15:33Speaker 5: have been having a conversation.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Of those four guys, Like I think he would have.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Been in the same tier as Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels,
- 15:41Speaker 5: and Drake May. Now would he have had the same
- 15:43Speaker 5: exact college football season if all those guys were in
- 15:45Speaker 5: college football still, and you know, would he been the
- 15:48Speaker 5: Heisman Trophy winner? I guess maybe he would have had
- 15:51Speaker 5: more competition for something like that. But if he had
- 15:54Speaker 5: the same exact season he had it Indiana last year
- 15:58Speaker 5: with that class, he would have been the fourth horseman there,
- 16:02Speaker 5: you know, with the group. So he's really good. He's
- 16:05Speaker 5: going to be a really good player, I think in
- 16:07Speaker 5: the league.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Yeah, what do you think? Probably the Tye Simpson in Alabama.
- 16:09Speaker 10: So I think both of these guys are underrated athletically.
- 16:12Speaker 10: I think Mendoza shows you that he's he's a quarterback.
- 16:17Speaker 10: He's not just sort of back there throwing the ball.
- 16:19Speaker 10: He can move around and run when he's not gonna
- 16:21Speaker 10: make a living doing that seven rushing touchdowns last year.
- 16:25Speaker 4: And I think ty Simpson.
- 16:28Speaker 10: Is a little bit more of a projection because he
- 16:30Speaker 10: didn't First of all, he didn't play as much and
- 16:34Speaker 10: if you look at the first half of last season
- 16:36Speaker 10: for Alabama, and I think I said this to you
- 16:38Speaker 10: Evan during the course of the season. At one point
- 16:40Speaker 10: I was like, he's the best quarterback in the country.
- 16:42Speaker 10: Then all of a sudden it kind of changed and
- 16:44Speaker 10: he didn't play as well in the second half of
- 16:46Speaker 10: the season. I think he got beat up a little bit.
- 16:48Speaker 10: I think he was dealing with some injuries, but there's
- 16:50Speaker 10: some there's some skill.
- 16:52Speaker 7: There to work with.
- 16:52Speaker 3: He has a really really.
- 16:54Speaker 10: And in my view when nfl arm, you know, he's
- 16:58Speaker 10: not like Drake may or Josh and like Whether Howitzer.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Or anything like that, but I think he quote unquote.
- 17:03Speaker 10: Can make all the throws.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I like both of these guys.
- 17:05Speaker 10: I like mendoz Are a lot more because there's been
- 17:07Speaker 10: a lot more production and consistency. But I wouldn't sleep
- 17:10Speaker 10: on Ty Simpson. I think someone at the end of
- 17:12Speaker 10: the first round one of these teams. I know people
- 17:15Speaker 10: have sort of dismissed this, but like, I think you'd
- 17:18Speaker 10: make a ton of sense for a team like the Rams,
- 17:20Speaker 10: who are going to need a replacement for Stafford soon.
- 17:24Speaker 10: You completely take off the no possibility of him having
- 17:28Speaker 10: to play in year one unless Stafford gets hurt. I
- 17:31Speaker 10: think that's the kind of development that could lead to
- 17:33Speaker 10: him having a successful career.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the interesting thing you said there about
- 17:37Speaker 5: Tya Simpson, we can talk about him as a player.
- 17:39Speaker 5: I mean, I think his best attribute is probably his
- 17:42Speaker 5: ability to throw a touch and timing to the intermediate
- 17:45Speaker 5: deep part of the field. He throws those nice catch
- 17:49Speaker 5: a bowl pillows you know that hit guys in stride,
- 17:51Speaker 5: you know, watching guys like Jeremy Bernard for example, who
- 17:54Speaker 5: we're going to talk about here.
- 17:55Speaker 6: Yeah, in a second, with the wide receivers.
- 17:57Speaker 5: You know, he would run those crossing routes and Tye
- 17:59Speaker 5: Simpson and would put it right on him in stride.
- 18:02Speaker 5: If you ask him to try to drive the ball
- 18:04Speaker 5: down the field, especially outside the numbers, it gets a
- 18:07Speaker 5: little iffy. And there were times where he's throwing the
- 18:10Speaker 5: far hash and he's trying to get the ball out
- 18:12Speaker 5: outside the numbers and receiver it's it's a you know,
- 18:15Speaker 5: he's throwing skip passes, you know, to his receivers like
- 18:17Speaker 5: those are the things that you worry a little bit
- 18:19Speaker 5: with him. But I want to more talk about what
- 18:22Speaker 5: you just mentioned. The back half of the first round,
- 18:25Speaker 5: the Patriots are sitting there at thirty one. We obviously
- 18:27Speaker 5: know the Patriots are not taking a quarterback at thirty one.
- 18:30Speaker 5: So is this a situation where somebody at the top
- 18:33Speaker 5: of the second round might want to come up and
- 18:36Speaker 5: grab Ty Simpson before the night is out and the
- 18:39Speaker 5: Patriots might have a trade partner there at a trade
- 18:41Speaker 5: back kind of candidate situation. I think there are a
- 18:44Speaker 5: handful of teams that could be, you know, in the
- 18:48Speaker 5: market for a quarterback like Ty Simpson that makes some
- 18:51Speaker 5: sense to come up and get him, you know, from
- 18:53Speaker 5: the second round, top of the second round, to come
- 18:55Speaker 5: back up to thirty one.
- 18:56Speaker 1: All right, well, let's move on to y receiver because
- 18:58Speaker 1: that's a position that, hey, we always need, right, We're
- 19:00Speaker 1: always looking for the number one ride receiver.
- 19:02Speaker 2: I think the interesting thing now, of course.
- 19:04Speaker 4: As we said at the top of the show, is that.
- 19:07Speaker 1: They've now signed Romeo Dobbs, who seems to be a
- 19:11Speaker 1: one for one replacement for what Stefon Diggs, and the
- 19:13Speaker 1: search now continues for an outside receiver.
- 19:16Speaker 7: You know.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Of course, Kaishan Boodie had a really good year, really
- 19:19Speaker 1: good hands, nice connection down the field. So I found
- 19:21Speaker 1: myself over the last few days kind of gravitating more
- 19:24Speaker 1: towards the outside guys, and I know there's a different variety,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and you know, first I'll just rattle off the top
- 19:29Speaker 1: three names of Jordan Tyson, Cornell Tat, and MacKaye Lemon.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I feel like those guys probably gonna go above where
- 19:34Speaker 1: the Patriots are gonna pick, and I'm going to go.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And I know I'm gonna get some pushback on this one,
- 19:37Speaker 1: and I'm ready for it.
- 19:38Speaker 4: But Denzel Boston, I can't.
- 19:41Speaker 1: I know, not a burner, and we need speed and
- 19:43Speaker 1: that kind of thing, but I just feel like this
- 19:46Speaker 1: guy is a stud. And how many times do you
- 19:48Speaker 1: have to take a chance on a guy before you
- 19:50Speaker 1: find one that, even though he doesn't have speed, his
- 19:52Speaker 1: size and his strength just overshadow that to me. Big,
- 19:55Speaker 1: powerful hands, you know, strong outside presence, a number of
- 19:58Speaker 1: different things that you can do with him. Maybe not
- 20:00Speaker 1: the breakaway speed, but return punts. You know, has a
- 20:03Speaker 1: little bit of wiggle to him. So I would just
- 20:05Speaker 1: kind of start with him because I feel like he's
- 20:07Speaker 1: in that area of the late twenties, and I you know,
- 20:10Speaker 1: we can talk about his speed and I get why
- 20:11Speaker 1: people might be afraid of him. Plus the combination of
- 20:14Speaker 1: Washington Jalen Polk Slash, He's kind of like Nikhil Harry.
- 20:17Speaker 1: So that's kind of a devastating combination. I just talking
- 20:21Speaker 1: about it's kind of a double kind of a double
- 20:23Speaker 1: busting there. But as I was watching him, like I
- 20:25Speaker 1: just I really gravitated towards this guy. So I mean,
- 20:27Speaker 1: I'll let you guys jump on on him or Teasert somebody.
- 20:29Speaker 1: You know, one of these guys.
- 20:30Speaker 8: You want to I had Boston on my list and
- 20:31Speaker 8: just he can be high volume. I mean he led
- 20:33Speaker 8: the team with sixty two receptions eight hundred and eighty
- 20:36Speaker 8: one yards. Just different red zone threat. That's really something
- 20:39Speaker 8: that Patriots need. But dus with the receivers. I think
- 20:41Speaker 8: of the past years we've had ceedee lamb JSN like
- 20:44Speaker 8: book all these people like to me for being available
- 20:47Speaker 8: to us, there's not really anything like that. So I've
- 20:50Speaker 8: reached the point with a first round receiver like I
- 20:52Speaker 8: want to name, and I just nobody really sticks out
- 20:54Speaker 8: to me this year. It's a big forsease, I mean,
- 20:56Speaker 8: to be worthy of the of our pick, which now
- 20:58Speaker 8: we're not picking mid topick at the end.
- 21:01Speaker 7: That's just me personally.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we.
- 21:03Speaker 6: Just they're clusters right there.
- 21:05Speaker 5: There's clusters of these guys, and you know, Denzel Boston,
- 21:09Speaker 5: I think, is the one guy that's kind of in
- 21:11Speaker 5: this in between cluster of probably your top twenty five
- 21:14Speaker 5: talent in the class. They're going to be concerns about
- 21:17Speaker 5: his athletic profile. He didn't test at the combine. Usually
- 21:20Speaker 5: not a good sign when a guy that has questions
- 21:22Speaker 5: about long speed doesn't run a forty in Indianapolis. It's
- 21:26Speaker 5: because he wants those secret hand times to be at
- 21:28Speaker 5: his pro day where we shave off tenths of a second,
- 21:31Speaker 5: you know, when we're getting them tweeted out by Albert
- 21:33Speaker 5: Breer or whatever.
- 21:34Speaker 6: It is so like that. And that was not a
- 21:37Speaker 6: shot at Albert Brier.
- 21:38Speaker 7: I took it.
- 21:39Speaker 6: But that that is the that's the tough part.
- 21:42Speaker 5: And I think what you look at is side kind
- 21:44Speaker 5: of the juxtaposition of a guy like Malchi Fields from
- 21:48Speaker 5: Notre Dame. He runs, he runs a four to six
- 21:51Speaker 5: warning bells right then Denzel Boston doesn't run. So you
- 21:55Speaker 5: still kind of have this hope that maybe really the
- 21:57Speaker 5: number you're looking at for him is like and he
- 22:00Speaker 5: run a low four or five, if he can run
- 22:02Speaker 5: somewhere around like a four or five flat to a
- 22:04Speaker 5: four or five three, and I know the forty.
- 22:06Speaker 6: Everybody's like, oh, who cares about the forty.
- 22:09Speaker 5: It's all about thresholds and sort of just baselines, right.
- 22:12Speaker 10: I do like I think when you watch him, you
- 22:14Speaker 10: watch highlights, he looks. I think he plays fast. That
- 22:17Speaker 10: makes sense. Maybe he doesn't have the measurables. You know,
- 22:20Speaker 10: people have drawn the like the puka sort of comparison
- 22:23Speaker 10: with him, and I can see why because I think
- 22:26Speaker 10: he plays I mean maybe at the catch the point.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I don't see him as a Puka warrior. No, not
- 22:31Speaker 5: after the catch, but I think the things that you
- 22:33Speaker 5: see with him at the catch point and then from
- 22:36Speaker 5: a competitive standard, yeah, and he's an exceptional contested catch guy.
- 22:40Speaker 5: You know, ten out of thirteen of his contested targets
- 22:43Speaker 5: he caught. That's a very high percentage of those. I
- 22:46Speaker 5: think what he does well is he he creates these
- 22:49Speaker 5: little pockets for the quarterback to put the ball up
- 22:52Speaker 5: on the platter. And when you have an accurate back
- 22:54Speaker 5: make yeah, and an accurate downfield thrower like Drake may
- 22:58Speaker 5: where he can read it and say Okay, I'm gonna
- 23:00Speaker 5: throw him open on the back shoulder, or I'm gonna
- 23:02Speaker 5: high point him this time, or I'm gonna lead him
- 23:04Speaker 5: that this time, or we're gonna throw him to a
- 23:06Speaker 5: little bit to the inside, and he can just use
- 23:08Speaker 5: his body positioning and he has incredible hands and incredibly
- 23:11Speaker 5: strong hands to just sort of box out and win
- 23:14Speaker 5: the ball at the catch point. We call him a
- 23:16Speaker 5: ball winner because he just goes down winning and just
- 23:20Speaker 5: wins the ball. That all being said, speed separation, ability,
- 23:25Speaker 5: ability to beat pressman coverage, like these are all profile concerns,
- 23:29Speaker 5: which I like, Yeah, well.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Let's kind of stay in this chunk though, because I mean,
- 23:33Speaker 1: we had really been talking about Concepcion from Texas A
- 23:36Speaker 1: and m well Mark Cooper Junior from Indiana. Say, those
- 23:39Speaker 1: are kind of the other two guys that you see
- 23:41Speaker 1: kind of in that late first round. And I mean,
- 23:44Speaker 1: I really liked Conceptsion. I thought he's explosive kind of guy.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I mean, but it feels a lot like he would
- 23:49Speaker 1: do the similar things that you just got with Romeo Dobbs.
- 23:51Speaker 1: So I don't if you guys have any thoughts on those.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I mean, Omar Cooper Junior a lot to like about him.
- 23:54Speaker 1: He seems like a dude.
- 23:56Speaker 8: I had Cooper just very versatile. It's not only going
- 23:58Speaker 8: to play in the slot. He'd mentioned high volume. He
- 24:01Speaker 8: had sixty nine receptions nine hundred and thirty seven yards.
- 24:04Speaker 7: If we're taking the receiver that early, I just I've
- 24:06Speaker 7: been hurt too many times.
- 24:07Speaker 8: I just want somebody who can elevate the wide receiver
- 24:10Speaker 8: room we have, and I think he's one of the
- 24:11Speaker 8: few people that can do that.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I think they're the same but different. You know,
- 24:15Speaker 5: Casey Concepcion is a burner, really good route runner, separates
- 24:21Speaker 5: really well at the.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Top of the route. He has a lot of these routes.
- 24:24Speaker 5: That you're going to see going around TikTok and Twitter
- 24:26Speaker 5: where it's like, look.
- 24:26Speaker 6: How open this guy is getting himself.
- 24:28Speaker 5: The one concern that you see with him are drops
- 24:31Speaker 5: in the ability to finish through contact. Like those are
- 24:33Speaker 5: two things that he struggled with a little bit at college.
- 24:35Speaker 5: At the college level, Omar Cooper Junior a really good athlete,
- 24:39Speaker 5: another guy that's really quick, fast, all those different types
- 24:42Speaker 5: of things. The one thing that I thought about with
- 24:45Speaker 5: him at Indiana when I was watching him, he doesn't
- 24:47Speaker 5: really run a route tree right now.
- 24:49Speaker 6: He's kind of just run into space.
- 24:50Speaker 5: They run a lot of RPOs, a lot of bubbles,
- 24:53Speaker 5: a lot of collegey type of schemes there at Indiana
- 24:56Speaker 5: and Omar Cooper Junior is just an exceptional athlete, really
- 25:00Speaker 5: strong with.
- 25:00Speaker 6: The ball in his hands.
- 25:02Speaker 5: There have been some comparisons, you know, with him to
- 25:05Speaker 5: some of those RAMS receivers over the years, like a
- 25:07Speaker 5: Robert Woods or somebody like that.
- 25:09Speaker 6: That's just extremely competitive.
- 25:11Speaker 5: But I don't know if he necessarily ran like a
- 25:14Speaker 5: robust NFL routtree where I can say this is exactly
- 25:18Speaker 5: going to translate. You're just kind of hoping that the
- 25:19Speaker 5: movement skills as a whole translate. But both those guys
- 25:23Speaker 5: are right in this range like they're going to be
- 25:25Speaker 5: an end of the first round, you know, in the twenties.
- 25:29Speaker 5: Maybe if the receivers get pushed up. But I think
- 25:31Speaker 5: that there's a chance that one of them is there
- 25:32Speaker 5: at thirty one.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I like both of them a lot. I agree with
- 25:35Speaker 4: you a point, Mike.
- 25:35Speaker 10: You know, Romeo Dobbs may have changed the profile of
- 25:40Speaker 10: the guy that the Patriots might be interested in that
- 25:42Speaker 10: high in the draft.
- 25:43Speaker 4: Yeah, but I do like both of those guys a lot.
- 25:45Speaker 10: I agree with a lot of what the boys just said,
- 25:47Speaker 10: so I'm curious to see what you guys think of
- 25:51Speaker 10: a bigger guy in Eldridge's guy from Tennessee Brasel, Chris Brasel.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Now you're talking about language, so.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Go ahead, yeah, I mean so yeah, I mean.
- 26:04Speaker 5: I always am careful with comparisons because you make these
- 26:07Speaker 5: comparisons to these like Hall of Fame calendar receivers.
- 26:11Speaker 6: And you don't want to do that.
- 26:14Speaker 5: There's shades of it right where like you're talking about
- 26:17Speaker 5: this guy that's six threes sixty four that has this
- 26:20Speaker 5: long striding speed that is really really good at winning
- 26:25Speaker 5: the ball again down the field at the catch point,
- 26:27Speaker 5: but is exceptionally fast. And I think the one thing
- 26:30Speaker 5: that you looked at with him from you know, an
- 26:32Speaker 5: outsider's perspective, is just how fast is exceptionally fast? He
- 26:36Speaker 5: goes to the combine and he runs in the high
- 26:38Speaker 5: four threes. So like, now you're really talking about a
- 26:41Speaker 5: guy that's got legit vertical speed. He also has great
- 26:45Speaker 5: size and a great catch radius, and I think he
- 26:48Speaker 5: catches the football really well. So you're looking at somebody
- 26:51Speaker 5: that I would call it accuracy eraser, where like if
- 26:54Speaker 5: you throw it a little high, you throw it a
- 26:55Speaker 5: little low, you throw it a little outside of him.
- 26:57Speaker 5: He's got that radius kind of like Mac coll Is
- 27:00Speaker 5: to like go up and catch the football and can
- 27:02Speaker 5: toward his body and make those types of catches while
- 27:05Speaker 5: having Legit burner deep level speed. And so if you
- 27:09Speaker 5: wanted to just kind of print out in a three
- 27:12Speaker 5: D printer a wide receiver for Drake May a guy
- 27:16Speaker 5: with exceptional downfield ball skills, deep speed, size, contested catchability,
- 27:23Speaker 5: the ability to go over the middle of the field
- 27:24Speaker 5: and win the football in traffic. Did I just that
- 27:27Speaker 5: that's the guy that you would want to pair with.
- 27:29Speaker 3: A guy like me too.
- 27:30Speaker 7: He's not like this.
- 27:31Speaker 10: You know, he's a big guy, but he's smooth and
- 27:34Speaker 10: the footwork, you know, the sideline stuff I think you showed.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I think you're right about his versatility.
- 27:40Speaker 4: He's not a one trick pony, and I like them. Yeah,
- 27:43Speaker 4: just a little thin.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I mean, you know, he's I mean, he's thicker, but
- 27:45Speaker 1: I and look, it's all personal preference, and sometimes I
- 27:48Speaker 1: tend to shy away from these guys and I rubber
- 27:51Speaker 1: stamp everything you just said. I just think I tend
- 27:53Speaker 1: to go more towards the bigger, more physical guy. And
- 27:56Speaker 1: maybe that's a fault of mind, but easy to see
- 27:59Speaker 1: how he would fit in on this offense. Just you know,
- 28:01Speaker 1: and again you always draw the comps of Tae Kwon Thornton.
- 28:04Speaker 1: That was, you know what they were looking for, that
- 28:06Speaker 1: same thing. He's not that guy, I agree, and me
- 28:08Speaker 1: he's also you know, one of the captains.
- 28:09Speaker 8: And question that I have this year as I look
- 28:12Speaker 8: through the players, Evan, where does somebody like that rate
- 28:15Speaker 8: like in the round grade because you have like the
- 28:16Speaker 8: top three guys.
- 28:17Speaker 5: So I think he's a pure second rounder, okay, but
- 28:20Speaker 5: I think that he's going to be a top fifty pick.
- 28:22Speaker 7: Okay.
- 28:23Speaker 5: And you know, just to the taekwan point real quick,
- 28:25Speaker 5: like this guy is almost two inches and twenty five
- 28:29Speaker 5: pounds heavier than Taekwan thor You know, Taekwan Thornton coming
- 28:32Speaker 5: out was one hundred and eighty pounds.
- 28:34Speaker 6: You know, this guy's two I.
- 28:36Speaker 5: Think two h five you know, right around there, Like,
- 28:39Speaker 5: this is not the same thing. If there's any concerns
- 28:42Speaker 5: about Chris Brazl in terms of that, all of this
- 28:44Speaker 5: is that Tennessee offense is super weird in the way
- 28:48Speaker 5: they run their rout tree is super weird. They have
- 28:50Speaker 5: these max splits where like the guy's basically one step
- 28:53Speaker 5: from being out of bounds and he's like running routes
- 28:55Speaker 5: from all the way out there, and they're spread in
- 28:58Speaker 5: their air raid. So it's more about Jalen Hyatt, Cedric Tillman,
- 29:04Speaker 5: Dante Thornton, like all these receivers that have come through
- 29:07Speaker 5: Tennessee that have not translated to the NFL. Because at Tennessee,
- 29:11Speaker 5: all they're doing and asking them to do is take off,
- 29:13Speaker 5: like just go down the field and we'll hit you
- 29:15Speaker 5: down there somewhere.
- 29:16Speaker 6: That's not gonna You're not gonna be able to do
- 29:18Speaker 6: just that. In the NFL. You're gonna have to be
- 29:20Speaker 6: able to do a lot more.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Well, let's you know, let's move on. Just open the
- 29:23Speaker 1: floor a to anybody's favorites. I asked a couple of
- 29:25Speaker 1: guys to watch Josh Cameron from Baylor, who's a later
- 29:28Speaker 1: round guy. But I just had a lot of fun
- 29:29Speaker 1: watching him. He worse thirty four. He looks like a
- 29:31Speaker 1: running back. He's completely raw. But one of those guys
- 29:35Speaker 1: where pull him up and I start watching like who
- 29:38Speaker 1: is this guy?
- 29:39Speaker 4: I you know? I told Paul and Tisam like, watch
- 29:40Speaker 4: this guy. Just tell me what we think. I think
- 29:41Speaker 4: we all reacted the same way.
- 29:43Speaker 8: The first thing I thought was like he's built like Antkumbole.
- 29:45Speaker 8: He is running over people. There's some players that just
- 29:52Speaker 8: use their build and he's one of them.
- 29:54Speaker 7: Just very exciting to watch. I was a big fan
- 29:56Speaker 7: when you show h.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I mean it's like, you know, late round guy, maybe
- 29:59Speaker 2: a developmental kind of but.
- 30:00Speaker 10: You know, maybe a Day three guy. He looks like
- 30:03Speaker 10: a running back. I think it's.
- 30:06Speaker 6: Guys like that in this class.
- 30:08Speaker 5: Uh, the guy from Navy Eli, I'll take your word. Yeah,
- 30:14Speaker 5: he's he's uh, you know the guy from Navy is.
- 30:17Speaker 5: If Bill Belichick was still here, we would be.
- 30:19Speaker 6: Talking about him in the second round at nauseum.
- 30:22Speaker 5: You know, this is a running back slash receiver who
- 30:26Speaker 5: runs routes out of the backfield, like a wide receiver
- 30:29Speaker 5: that went to Navy, that played multiple positions like this is,
- 30:32Speaker 5: you know, an old school Patriot right through and through.
- 30:35Speaker 5: But we got to go back to day two because
- 30:36Speaker 5: we're were glossing over like the whole a lot of the.
- 30:40Speaker 6: On Day two.
- 30:41Speaker 5: So just Jeremy Bernard, Yeah, Jeremy Bernard is an interesting player.
- 30:44Speaker 5: I think he's more probably in the Romeo Dobbs profile.
- 30:47Speaker 4: That's my problem.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I have a bunch of guys that I looked at
- 30:49Speaker 2: like that.
- 30:50Speaker 5: Yeah, so we'll get to him in a second. I
- 30:53Speaker 5: think the other guy that we need to talk about,
- 30:55Speaker 5: And I was busting bars balls about this guy yesterday
- 30:57Speaker 5: because he kept on talking to me about it.
- 30:59Speaker 6: I'll call college football season.
- 31:01Speaker 5: Then in late November, November twenty second, the last game
- 31:04Speaker 5: that Louisville played and in the regular season, Chris Bell
- 31:07Speaker 5: blows out his knee and tears his ACL.
- 31:09Speaker 6: So Chris Bell would have been a first round pick
- 31:12Speaker 6: if he had a healthy knee, and he does not.
- 31:15Speaker 5: And the one argument that I was making it was
- 31:17Speaker 5: kind of funny because we flip flopped like this is
- 31:19Speaker 5: bar Skuy and now he's kind of reserved about it
- 31:22Speaker 5: because of the knee. The Patriots, to me, are a
- 31:24Speaker 5: team that needs ceiling at the wide receiver position.
- 31:27Speaker 6: They need to hit big like they need they're not.
- 31:30Speaker 5: I don't know if we're necessarily looking for just another
- 31:34Speaker 5: guy to add into the mix at this point at
- 31:36Speaker 5: wide receiver. And are they in a position where, let's
- 31:40Speaker 5: say Chris Bell's there in the second or third round
- 31:42Speaker 5: because of the knee injury where you're just going to
- 31:45Speaker 5: kind of hope that the need fixes itself and we're
- 31:48Speaker 5: all good, because I think there's a world now that
- 31:51Speaker 5: we live in where like these injuries are not career
- 31:53Speaker 5: debilitating anymore. Guys bounce back from acls all the time.
- 31:57Speaker 5: He's a twenty two year old kid, you know, like
- 31:59Speaker 5: hopefully he bounces back from it. So I think Chris
- 32:02Speaker 5: Bell is a really interesting name as someone that you
- 32:04Speaker 5: might be getting a round or two later than you
- 32:07Speaker 5: were probably going to be getting him at. We would
- 32:09Speaker 5: be talking about him at thirty one if he was healthy.
- 32:12Speaker 5: So that's an interesting one to me as well. I
- 32:15Speaker 5: know that there's a lot of people that are into
- 32:17Speaker 5: Jacobe Lane from USC too. I've heard he's not exactly
- 32:21Speaker 5: Vrabel's cup of tea, you know, not necessarily the effort
- 32:25Speaker 5: in finish, big time play strength kind of player, but
- 32:28Speaker 5: big another, huge catch radius kind of guy, great.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Side of the field, down the field, yeah, and catch
- 32:34Speaker 1: the ball like That's how I saw him do.
- 32:36Speaker 6: Very good in the red zone.
- 32:37Speaker 5: You know it can run the slant, can run a go,
- 32:40Speaker 5: can run red zone routes, can post up on guys.
- 32:43Speaker 6: It's got some really.
- 32:44Speaker 5: Great highlight reel catches on his film as well. Like that,
- 32:47Speaker 5: then you kind of get into you know, the Ted
- 32:49Speaker 5: Hursts of it all, and you know those types of
- 32:52Speaker 5: players that went to Georgia State.
- 32:54Speaker 6: You know, again we're.
- 32:55Speaker 5: Talking about guys that are size speed specimens. You know
- 32:58Speaker 5: that people that fit down sort of mold of having
- 33:01Speaker 5: you know, the size we're kind of talking about with
- 33:04Speaker 5: Chris Brasl you know that sort of profile, and you
- 33:07Speaker 5: know that that's how we kind of go. And then
- 33:09Speaker 5: you know, the kid from North Dakota State, Like we're
- 33:11Speaker 5: kind of just going down that line of you know,
- 33:13Speaker 5: second third, fourth round profile of like a traditional downfield
- 33:17Speaker 5: X receiver.
- 33:18Speaker 8: But I feel like when you get later in the rounds,
- 33:20Speaker 8: that's not the player of the Patriots need to be honest, Like,
- 33:22Speaker 8: I think they need the big X guy, which is yeah,
- 33:25Speaker 8: I just I think we've done enough of the mid
- 33:27Speaker 8: round receiver.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we're all coming out to the guys
- 33:30Speaker 1: with the size that can play in the outside probably
- 33:32Speaker 1: the best fit.
- 33:32Speaker 10: Yeah, I think that is the best fit, which is
- 33:34Speaker 10: too bad because I think there's a lot of productive
- 33:36Speaker 10: guys that are like you know, you know Zach Righter Brown,
- 33:39Speaker 10: you know Branch Branch sorry, and Brennan Thompson, like they've
- 33:43Speaker 10: got like productive guys. But I agree with everything you
- 33:47Speaker 10: guys are saying. I not necessarily sure they need another
- 33:49Speaker 10: one of those.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Yeah, even looking at guys like you know, Dean Burgh
- 33:52Speaker 1: from Oklahoma, Skyl Bell from Yukon little guys, you know,
- 33:54Speaker 1: the little slots that I think we would have been
- 33:56Speaker 1: more on namored with. I feel like, I don't know
- 33:58Speaker 1: if that's that's Drake's kind of saw. Really, the question
- 34:01Speaker 1: I think we're asking is what's the best fit on
- 34:03Speaker 1: the outside and.
- 34:04Speaker 4: How much of a chance do you chant? How much
- 34:06Speaker 4: of a swing do you take?
- 34:08Speaker 1: Any other guys that we haven't really talked about, you know,
- 34:10Speaker 1: Bernard a pretty bound balanced guy.
- 34:11Speaker 4: I mean, Kim and.
- 34:12Speaker 6: Surat are both really really good players.
- 34:16Speaker 5: I think Bernard is probably a little bit more explosively,
- 34:18Speaker 5: a little bit more of an athlete than Sarat. I
- 34:20Speaker 5: love Sarat. I think Sarat is Jacobe Myers two point zero. Like,
- 34:23Speaker 5: I don't think he's gonna wow you it's a good
- 34:25Speaker 5: play with his athleticism or his speed, but he's crafty,
- 34:28Speaker 5: he knows how to get open. He's got good hands,
- 34:30Speaker 5: he's got good size to him, so he's not really
- 34:33Speaker 5: like a pure you know, Welker Edelman slot. He's got
- 34:36Speaker 5: a little bit more of a six to two profile
- 34:38Speaker 5: to him. He's really interesting player, you know, I don't
- 34:42Speaker 5: know again, like those guys Bernard Surrat, even Antonio Williams,
- 34:47Speaker 5: he's like more of a pure slot receiver from Clemson.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Yack for that guy Williams.
- 34:53Speaker 5: He's those types of guys I think, you know, Antonio
- 34:55Speaker 5: Williams and no in a Tom Brady Josh McDaniel's offense would.
- 34:59Speaker 6: Eat in the.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Receptions. Yeah, insanely productive.
- 35:03Speaker 5: I don't know if that's necessarily what they're looking for
- 35:06Speaker 5: right now. But Bernard and Surat are another guys that
- 35:09Speaker 5: I think are just really consistent good route runners get
- 35:13Speaker 5: know how to play the game, know how to run routes,
- 35:16Speaker 5: know how to play the game.
- 35:18Speaker 6: That that's pretty much it.
- 35:19Speaker 5: You know, for a day two I mentioned Ted Hurst,
- 35:21Speaker 5: you know Bryce Lance from North Dakota State. Those are
- 35:24Speaker 5: the types of guys that if you're looking for again
- 35:27Speaker 5: like athletic traits and upside and you know, just physical size,
- 35:31Speaker 5: speed ability, that would be what you're banking on and
- 35:34Speaker 5: then you kind of get into the later rounds with
- 35:36Speaker 5: you know, like Jeff called Well from Cincinnati, who is
- 35:38Speaker 5: another like the day three guy version of this, right,
- 35:42Speaker 5: like you know, the fifth or sixth round version of this.
- 35:46Speaker 5: I have one more that I'll just throw out there
- 35:48Speaker 5: and then if you guys have any more, but the
- 35:50Speaker 5: one guy I would just mention as like a late
- 35:52Speaker 5: round guys, Lewis Bond from Boston College. We know that
- 35:55Speaker 5: Mike Rabel and Bill O'Brien have a relationship. I'm sure
- 35:58Speaker 5: that they'll see him in a couple weeks at BC's
- 36:00Speaker 5: Pro day right down the street. If the Patriots are
- 36:03Speaker 5: planning on moving on from Pop Douglas after this season
- 36:06Speaker 5: at some point, Lewis Bond, his profiles, is a very
- 36:09Speaker 5: similar type of player to Pop Douglas, and I just wonder,
- 36:12Speaker 5: you know, Pop has one more year on his contract.
- 36:15Speaker 5: It's not a huge role that they're asking him to
- 36:17Speaker 5: play to begin with. You know, Lewis Bond probably there
- 36:20Speaker 5: in the fifth or sixth round or something like that
- 36:22Speaker 5: as sort of a one for one replacement for Pop
- 36:25Speaker 5: if it comes to that. So that's I think the
- 36:28Speaker 5: list that you're sort of looking at as of right now.
- 36:31Speaker 6: Unless I've missed anybody.
- 36:32Speaker 8: I got Late Round guy, the late round guy. This
- 36:35Speaker 8: is one of our what six six round picks. I
- 36:37Speaker 8: got Kayden wee Jen from Iowa. Just big return guy
- 36:41Speaker 8: as Marcus Jones gets, you know, a bit more important
- 36:43Speaker 8: on defense. Not sure if you want to risk him
- 36:45Speaker 8: with the punt returns that much. This guy set the
- 36:47Speaker 8: school record for punt returns to kickoffs.
- 36:49Speaker 10: That's a good call, tease, because some of these guys
- 36:52Speaker 10: that we're talking about day three possibilities do have extensive
- 36:56Speaker 10: punt return experience. And if you that's it. Marcus owns
- 37:00Speaker 10: is the best punt returner that I've seen. Yeah, but
- 37:03Speaker 10: you might wonder if they're going to continue to do that.
- 37:05Speaker 7: Yeah, it's risky.
- 37:06Speaker 8: I mean, if you need him in a clutch situation
- 37:07Speaker 8: like with the Jets a couple of years ago, you
- 37:09Speaker 8: do that. But he's just you need him now in defense.
- 37:11Speaker 8: But Wee Jen just keep an eye out for him.
- 37:13Speaker 8: Training camp guy.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Anybody else probably want to take us home?
- 37:15Speaker 10: Many No, you guys got all the all the guys
- 37:17Speaker 10: I mentioned. I like Jeremy Bernard in sarat you know,
- 37:21Speaker 10: just because they're a little bit bigger than those pure
- 37:23Speaker 10: slot guys. They're not gonna wol you with athleticism and burst,
- 37:27Speaker 10: but a lot of physical traits that I mean, not
- 37:31Speaker 10: the least of which is their physicality. Sarat is definitely
- 37:35Speaker 10: one of those guys that that wins, wins all the battles.
- 37:37Speaker 1: So Boston, Bell and Brasel is that is that three
- 37:41Speaker 1: guys that kind of, you know, intrigue different types.
- 37:43Speaker 5: I yeah, I think Brassel's the guy to me that
- 37:47Speaker 5: makes the most sense. I just don't know how you
- 37:49Speaker 5: make it make sense in terms of where you're going
- 37:51Speaker 5: to draft him. Thirty one feels it feels a little
- 37:56Speaker 5: bit rich. If they did it, I wouldn't kill him
- 37:59Speaker 5: for it, because the profile is just so good and
- 38:01Speaker 5: you can see how it fits perfectly, you know, not
- 38:04Speaker 5: that I it's kind of like how we were talking
- 38:06Speaker 5: about Alex Pearson free agency, Like is he a true
- 38:10Speaker 5: star elite receiver? Probably not, but the fit with Drake.
- 38:14Speaker 2: And such skills, Yeah, it's.
- 38:16Speaker 5: Just so enticing. And I think Brazil fits that similar thing.
- 38:20Speaker 5: And I'm not opposed to taking a third round fire
- 38:23Speaker 5: on Bell and just betting on the fact that his
- 38:25Speaker 5: knee is gonna check out, Like I we just saw
- 38:28Speaker 5: Stefon Diggs do this, Like he just came off in
- 38:30Speaker 5: ACL and was basically the same guy. I don't think
- 38:33Speaker 5: that this is twenty years ago when those injuries are
- 38:35Speaker 5: just career ending or he's never the same guy as
- 38:38Speaker 5: he was before. I know the Notre Dame people are
- 38:41Speaker 5: gonna kill us about Malachai Fields and my my distaste
- 38:44Speaker 5: for that kind of receiver, but move aside in I mean, like,
- 38:47Speaker 5: once you run a four to six, you're off my list.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Sorry, all right, well that's gonna do it for this
- 38:52Speaker 1: episode of Patriots Draft Countdown presented by Bud Light.
- 38:55Speaker 4: And we're just getting started.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Guys, The draft fast approaching.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Got you covered all spring
- 39:01Speaker 5: Fi
