- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Hi,
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: I'm Ernie Lansford,
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: and this is Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 0:11your daily brew of proverbs with purpose to keep stinking
- 0:15thinking at bay.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Well, today is August 1st.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: first day of the month,
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: and we'll review Proverbs 1,
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: 10 through 16 using the contemporary English version,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: CEV.
- 0:30I'll not read the entire chapter,
- 0:33just the verses that apply to today's episode.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: In today's episode, we're once again reading Proverbs 1,
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: chapter 1, verses 10 through 16 from the CEV.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: So don't be tempted by sinners or listen when they say,
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: come on,
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: let's gang up and kill somebody just for the fun of it.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: They're well and healthy now, but we'll finish them off once and for all.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We'll take their valuables and fill our homes with stolen goods.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: If you join our gang, you'll get your share.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Don't follow anyone like that or do what they do.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: They're in a big hurry to commit some crime, perhaps even murder.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: That's Proverbs 1, verses 10-16 from the CEV.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about a standard business trap that's easy to fall into,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: the transactional mindset.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: You've likely seen it and most likely lived it.
- 1:34Chasing numbers,
- 1:35pushing deals,
- 1:36and measuring success by commission checks or sales ranking.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: If you've ever watched the Glenn Gary,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Glenn Ross movie from years ago,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: you've seen this culture dramatized to the extreme.
- 1:51The infamous and intense Alec Baldwin scene where he walks into
- 1:55a struggling sales
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: office and just rips into the team.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: There's no mercy.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: He barks, always be closing.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It's a masterclass in pressure, manipulation, and intimidation.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And frankly, I've watched that scene more times than I care to admit.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Well, because I've lived it.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: I've been that guy under pressure.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I've been the Alec Baldwin character,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: the one chasing quota to stay in favor of the C-suite,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: tying my self-worth as a team leader to hitting quota and chasing EBITDA.
- 2:33I've also been that personal production pavement pounder
- 2:37sitting in my car after an
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: on-site visit,
- 2:41counting potential commissions earned after writing an order or
- 2:46making a deal.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Now this begs to ask questions.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Is your self-worth tied to your last transaction?
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: What are you chasing?
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Who are you becoming?
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 1, 10 through 16 offers a radically different mindset.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: In verse 10,
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Solomon says,
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: don't be tempted by sinners or listen when they say,
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: come on,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: let's gang up and kill somebody just for the fun of it.
- 3:18That to me means let's not go after customers or see customers
- 3:25as prey just to make a deal.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: But then we're going to fast forward to verse 15 where Solomon says,
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: don't follow anyone like that or do what they do.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: In this verse,
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: this series,
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: I feel Solomon is doing more than warning us about criminals or thugs.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: I believe he's referring to the mindset that leads us astray.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: in business,
- 3:52it manifests when we cut corners and we prioritize profit over
- 3:57people and view
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: clients as prey rather than partners.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: In verse 15, he says, do not go along with them.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: to me,
- 4:08I can apply this to foregoing listening to the self-proclaimed
- 4:13sales training gurus
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: who teach how to manipulate customers for the sake of transactions.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: It also means never sacrificing integrity.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: It also means never trading long-term purpose for short-term gain.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Yep, I'm totally convinced that transactional thinking is short-term.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: It's about getting the money and moving on.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: But I'm firmly rooted in the belief that relationships,
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: strong,
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: authentic,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: genuine relationships,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: they're built to last.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Let's think about the early church.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: How did they spread the gospel?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Not through social media branding campaigns.
- 5:01Not through smoke and mirrors and lights and video walls and
- 5:05line arrays or the
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: latest rock music.
- 5:08No,
- 5:08it spread through relationships,
- 5:11through people doing life and business together.
- 5:14I'd like to share with you my simple definition of customer
- 5:18success mastery that
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I've written about in a couple of books.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: The definition is real simple.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: One who embodies the mindset,
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: desire,
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: commitment,
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: and ability to help others get to where they want or need to go faster,
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: efficiently,
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: and profitably.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: That sums it up.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: That's customer success mastery.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And customer success mastery isn't about selling.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: It's more than that.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: It's about delivering exceptional experiences.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: It's about serving God's other children.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And frankly, we're all God's children.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: It's also about adding significance to others.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: It's about reflecting God's character.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: It's about adding significance.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: It's about building trust.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Every meeting,
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: every proposal,
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: every customer email is an opportunity to reflect God's grace,
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: His wisdom,
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: and His love.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: I recently read that there are five Gospels.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Now, hang on with me.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: We'll get there.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and the fifth Gospel is us.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: We may be the only Bible our customer reads today.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And that should shape how we follow up, how we listen, and how we serve.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: That's how we build relationships.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Now, I am firmly in the belief that relationships are everything.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: But I want to be clear.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Let's not confuse servanthood with stewardship.
- 7:03There's no line in a financial direct deposit or online deposit
- 7:09field labeled relationship.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Only transactions, dollars, and cents appear on our bank statements.
- 7:17That's why healthy relationships in business must eventually
- 7:22lead to measurable action.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Customers desire to be invited to engage.
- 7:29They view us as partners rather than being ignored or treated
- 7:33like a financial wallet.
- 7:36I believe relationships open the door,
- 7:39but it's the transaction that walks through it.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And when the relationship is genuine,
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: deep,
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: and authentic,
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: that transaction becomes more than a transaction or a sale.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: It becomes, as Rabbi Daniel Wapin says, a certificate of appreciation.
- 7:57A tangible way a customer expresses gratitude for the
- 8:02significance you've added to
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: their business and hopefully their life.
- 8:07So let's build deep,
- 8:09meaningful,
- 8:10authentic relationships first and foremost.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And remember to extend an invitation to engage.
- 8:18Let's build relationships on a foundation of conducting
- 8:21business in a manner that
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: exceeds our expectations in return.
- 8:27A simple yet concept no different than Jesus telling us to love
- 8:31our neighbor as ourselves.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I have some challenging questions for you.
- 8:36I want you to ask yourself,
- 8:38am I chasing transactions or building relationships?
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Do I view my clients as transactions or as individuals?
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Is my work reflecting God's character?
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Today's customer success code,
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: compliments of John C.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Maxwell,
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: success is what we do for ourselves.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Significance is what we do for others.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: When we shift from focusing on transactions to emphasizing significance,
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: we do more than just expand our business.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: We boost our influence, reputation, and legacy.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: So, here's some action points for you today.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Number one, view your clients as partners today.
- 9:29Number two,
- 9:30listen to understand more than to reapply just to pitch your
- 9:34offer.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: And three, deliver value before asking for engagement.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Deliver significance before asking for engagement.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: That's real simple stuff.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Father, thank you for the wisdom you gave through Solomon.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Help us resist the pressure to chase transactions.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Teach us to see our clients as individuals rather than prospects.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Give us the confidence to live out your word in the marketplace.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Use us, Lord, to serve your other children and reflect your light.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name we pray.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 10:18that's it for today's episode of Marketplace Proverbs and
- 10:22Coffee with Ernie,
- 10:23your daily brew of proverbs with purpose to keep stinking
- 10:27thinking at bay.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Thank you for joining me.
- 10:30If this message has helped you or inspired you,
- 10:33please share it with someone that you hold dear.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And remember, success is temporal.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Significance is infinite.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Let's meet again tomorrow morning.
