- 0:23Hey everyone, welcome back to the Couples Journey blog series podcast.
- 0:28We're on part two of the series, making a guilt-free drop. Here's part two.
- 0:34Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 0:38Romans 8 verse 1 Yesterday, we took some time to define condemnation,
- 0:43especially as it's presented in Romans 8 verse 1, a verse often used as a shield when guilt strikes us.
- 0:50While one important truth in this verse is that we're finally saved from our sins through Christ.
- 0:56Sadly, our lack of understanding of the full context often leads us to overlook
- 1:01the other crucial truth, sanctification.
- 1:04The true message of this verse goes beyond just salvation.
- 1:08It's also about how we perceive condemnation and how we respond to that perception,
- 1:13especially when we feel embarrassed or guilty.
- 1:15Our perspective on this significantly impacts our relationships,
- 1:20particularly in marriage.
- 1:21Here are some key points from Romans 8 verse 1. 1.
- 1:25No condemnation for believers means that we're no longer judged or condemned by God for our past sins.
- 1:31That's because Jesus Christ has taken the punishment for us and justified us
- 1:36through His righteousness.
- 1:37We are restored and reunited with God.
- 1:402. Accepting Christ means submitting to His authority.
- 1:44This restoration allows us not to follow our sinful nature, the flesh,
- 1:48but to walk in the Holy Spirit, whom we have access to because of Jesus.
- 1:53So, we embrace the process of sanctification, continuously seeking the power
- 1:58and influence of the Holy Spirit, as we move forward in our new life. 3.
- 2:04Our freedom in Christ, expressed in walking after the Spirit,
- 2:08is evidence that we are in Christ.
- 2:10When shortcomings or fleshy behaviors surface, we shouldn't see those moments
- 2:15as condemnation but as part of the sanctification journey in our new life.
- 2:19If we don't take time to fully understand and embrace this biblical truth,
- 2:24that we are free from condemnation by grace, several negative outcomes could
- 2:28affect us in our marriage.
- 2:30These include 1. Harboring unforgiveness.
- 2:342. Constant feelings of guilt and shame. 3.
- 2:38Lack of truth and security. 4. Legalism and love based on performance. 5.
- 2:45Difficulty resolving conflicts 6.
- 2:48Spiritual and emotional stagnation Not grasping or applying God's grace concerning
- 2:54guilt can lead to a marriage filled with tension, mistrust, resentment,
- 2:58and emotional exhaustion.
- 3:00It can hinder true intimacy and the ability to forgive each other,
- 3:04the very foundation of a healthy, lasting marriage.
- 3:08Embracing the biblical truth of grace and forgiveness brings peace,
- 3:13security, and renewal to our relationships.
- 3:16Let's look at David as an example. After his sin with Bathsheba and the murder
- 3:20of her husband Uriah, David felt deep guilt.
- 3:23His response involved denial and attempts to hide his sin, as noted in 2 Samuel 11.
- 3:29But when the prophet Nathan confronted him, David was deeply convicted.
- 3:34This led to a heartfelt psalm of repentance, as noted in Psalm 51.
- 3:39In it, David openly admits his sin, pleads for mercy, and earnestly desires to be right with God.
- 3:46At first, David's efforts to hide his sin displeased God. His choices resulted
- 3:51in spiritual brokenness and consequences.
- 3:54But after Nathan confronted him, David genuinely repented, humbly turning back to God.
- 4:00He sought forgiveness and restoration, crying out.
- 4:04Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51 verse 10.
- 4:12This sincere repentance pleased God, and David's life was marked by a renewed
- 4:17obedience and dependence on his mercy.
- 4:20David's story reminds us that feelings of guilt are natural.
- 4:24They can even serve as a catalyst for repentance. The key is how we respond.
- 4:29Initial reactions might be flawed, but true repentance and obedience lead to restoration.
- 4:35It's a powerful example of how God's grace can turn guilt into spiritual growth.
- 4:40How we respond to guilt or condemnation, especially when guilt is triggered,
- 4:46reflects how truly we've accepted Jesus into our lives and our marriage.
- 4:50It shows whether we're submitting to His authority, whether we're just starting
- 4:54our faith journey or have been walking with Jesus for years.
- 4:58Many of us might still be stuck in feelings of guilt and not fully experiencing
- 5:02the presence and transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
- 5:06The message of the gospel isn't just a one-time declaration.
- 5:10It's an everyday reminder of Christ's grace, mercy, and love because it's through
- 5:15that continuous experience that real transformation happens.
