Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Always a pleasure to have Logan Gilbert on the show. Logan,
- 0:07Speaker 1: of course, a right hander for the Seattle Mariners, a
- 0:10Speaker 1: huge piece of a very formidable rotation for the MS. Logan,
- 0:14Speaker 1: thanks so much for being with us. Great to see you.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I know, everyone shows up to camp in the best
- 0:18Speaker 1: shape of their life. Everyone's ready to go. But you
- 0:21Speaker 1: guys have a lot to be excited about. What are
- 0:24Speaker 1: you most excited about when it comes to this twenty
- 0:27Speaker 1: twenty six M squad?
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the expectations this year just seems a
- 0:32Speaker 2: little different. Of course, we made the playoffs, so a
- 0:35Speaker 2: few years back, broke the streak and for a little
- 0:38Speaker 2: bit it was kind of make the playoffs or win
- 0:40Speaker 2: the division, and things changed last year and we saw
- 0:43Speaker 2: how good we can be and how close we got.
- 0:45Speaker 2: So this year already, a lot of the meetings that
- 0:47Speaker 2: talk has just been the expectations that we see ourselves
- 0:50Speaker 2: as one of the best teams.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Have you recovered from last year? Yeah?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, feeling good physically, Not physically I'm talking mentally,
- 0:59Speaker 2: because yeah, I mean I was in obviously you know
- 1:01Speaker 2: that I was there for the Alds against Tigers, which
- 1:03Speaker 2: was one of the greatest series I've ever seen been
- 1:06Speaker 2: a part of.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Game five was unbelievable. You guys pulled it out right,
- 1:10Speaker 3: and then you go to the next series against the
- 1:12Speaker 3: Bluejas and have another unbelievable series inner so close. Just
- 1:16Speaker 3: how do you get over that? Yeah, it's very taxing.
- 1:18Speaker 2: It's like the coolest thing to be a part of
- 1:20Speaker 2: that mentally, but also you're it's very high highs and
- 1:24Speaker 2: low lows too, so it takes a while in a
- 1:26Speaker 2: good way. You want to reflect on it and like
- 1:28Speaker 2: let it sting for a little bit and motivate you.
- 1:30Speaker 2: But at the same time, this year, I think we
- 1:32Speaker 2: kind of address it but get past it. At the
- 1:34Speaker 2: same time, we're a new team and expectations to win
- 1:37Speaker 2: it all.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Yeah, for someone who's never got a chance to play
- 1:41Speaker 4: in the World Series but lost some tough games, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 4: getting a chance to go to the World Series, what
- 1:45Speaker 4: are those conversations like with your teammates in the offseason
- 1:48Speaker 4: where you guys just continuingly, you know, pushing each other
- 1:51Speaker 4: to just get a little bit better because you know
- 1:53Speaker 4: you were so close to getting over that hume.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Definitely, I think bringing nails back right away was the
- 1:58Speaker 2: biggest thing, and for a moment and the team and
- 2:00Speaker 2: all that, But a lot of those conversations I think
- 2:02Speaker 2: took place right afterwards, just getting back to Seattle Pack
- 2:05Speaker 2: in your locker, Like we're talking about the sting of
- 2:07Speaker 2: being so close and losing, but at the same time
- 2:10Speaker 2: we were talking just different guys whoa cal bryce like
- 2:15Speaker 2: how close we got and also the team that we
- 2:17Speaker 2: have that you know, like I said, let it hurt
- 2:19Speaker 2: for a little bit, but also motivate us and come
- 2:22Speaker 2: up next year and not come up short.
- 2:26Speaker 3: What does that look like? Because he's mentioned bringing back nails, right,
- 2:30Speaker 3: he lost Geno, but then you bring in Donovan. You
- 2:32Speaker 3: have a lot of essentially the same team back that
- 2:35Speaker 3: was really good last year. Now you guys are the
- 2:37Speaker 3: favorites in this division, right, everyone's looking at you guys
- 2:41Speaker 3: to not only be the favorites of the division, but
- 2:43Speaker 3: possibly represent the American League. That's different here for Seattle then,
- 2:47Speaker 3: like you mentioned, so how do you deal with the
- 2:48Speaker 3: expectations and what does Dan say? Dan Wilson say, Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 3: I think it's where we want to be. It's fun.
- 2:53Speaker 2: You want the target on your back and it's a
- 2:55Speaker 2: big honor. Like we know we have a good division.
- 2:57Speaker 2: We know the aos stacked. There's a lot of good teams.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Be the top team at the beginning, it's a big deal.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But at the same time, like honestly, it means nothing.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You have to go out there, you have to prove
- 3:07Speaker 2: it every single day. We have to win the games
- 3:08Speaker 2: that matter. And Dan at the Helm, he's the man.
- 3:12Speaker 3: He gets it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: The players love him. He feels like a player still.
- 3:16Speaker 2: He's setting the tone the right way from the get go.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Yeah for someone who was drafted, you know, and his
- 3:22Speaker 4: only pitch for the Mariners, take me inside kind of
- 3:25Speaker 4: your head. You're dugout during Game five when cal Rawly
- 3:29Speaker 4: hits that home run to tie the game, and then
- 3:30Speaker 4: ultimately Gino goes and hits that home run. I mean,
- 3:34Speaker 4: you know, I got a chance to play in the postseason.
- 3:36Speaker 4: That was one of the greatest postseason atmospheres I've ever
- 3:39Speaker 4: ever seen.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it was crazy.
- 3:42Speaker 2: There's the loudest I've heard anything ever any stadium, any game.
- 3:45Speaker 2: The fans in Seattle just going crazy. You can tell
- 3:48Speaker 2: how long they've waited for something like that. All of
- 3:50Speaker 2: us really, like you're talking about getting drafted here in eighteen.
- 3:53Speaker 2: This has been the vision for years of what the
- 3:55Speaker 2: team could be, where we could make it, and for
- 3:58Speaker 2: years it was just kind of like seeing it. We're
- 4:00Speaker 2: almost there, We're almost there, and then last year we
- 4:03Speaker 2: actually got to taste of it that after seven or
- 4:05Speaker 2: eight years, like this is what we wanted to happen.
- 4:07Speaker 2: But at the same time, it can't be a one
- 4:09Speaker 2: year thing. We want to be that team for five
- 4:11Speaker 2: ten years. That every year is right there in the hunt, Logan.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I'm here for the hard hitting questions, only the stuff
- 4:18Speaker 1: that people want to know. You are a knicker style
- 4:21Speaker 1: pant wearing guy, and all of a sudden, you're showing
- 4:24Speaker 1: up in long pants and I need to know, Logan,
- 4:26Speaker 1: what is happening?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Why that got canceled? That didn't work out for me.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I just I just wanted to change it. It's been
- 4:35Speaker 2: like since high school or college that I tried that,
- 4:37Speaker 2: and I always thought I would do it like last
- 4:40Speaker 2: game of a season or something. But I can't bring
- 4:44Speaker 2: myself to not take an outing seriously, even if it's
- 4:48Speaker 2: just my pants. So I figured live VPS probably the
- 4:50Speaker 2: most relaxed setting I could try it out, and it
- 4:53Speaker 2: didn't work.
- 4:53Speaker 3: So I'm back at pants up. Alani you have to
- 4:55Speaker 3: understand that he's tall and skinny, so the short good.
- 4:58Speaker 3: When you're short, it doesn't look good.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Imagine how much taller he would even look in. I mean,
- 5:04Speaker 1: you're six six, so long pants it's gonna elongate you
- 5:08Speaker 1: even more. That is a menacing site on the mound looking.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I was told it didn't look good though I was taller,
- 5:15Speaker 2: but didn't look good at the same time. So I
- 5:17Speaker 2: learned my lessons.
- 5:18Speaker 3: So up here, so a lot of up here. There's
- 5:20Speaker 3: a mural of like all the great A lot of
- 5:22Speaker 3: the great, not all of them, A lot of the
- 5:23Speaker 3: great Mariners. Most of them except for Felix, have long
- 5:26Speaker 3: pants on. So would you go the Raula Banya's baggy
- 5:30Speaker 3: look or would you go the Randy Johnson? These are
- 5:32Speaker 3: way too tight, tapered, tight, rolled at the bottom line.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I mean, Randy looks good. It's intimidating, but I don't
- 5:36Speaker 2: know if I can pull it off. Cal told me
- 5:38Speaker 2: today they were too tight, that's the problem. So I
- 5:40Speaker 2: think maybe I go backwards with the baggy ones.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Try that out. Yeah, someone showed me a picture of
- 5:45Speaker 3: me from like twenty ten and my pants were like pajamas. Yeah,
- 5:48Speaker 3: that was the look style, and we were jerseys baggy.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Now everyone's gone super tight. Yeah, and it's like it'll
- 5:55Speaker 3: go back to baggy. It always does it always, it
- 5:57Speaker 3: always reverts back.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I got I got two for you. I want
- 6:01Speaker 4: to know just I mean, obviously win all healthy, best
- 6:04Speaker 4: starting staff in baseball. I want to know about your guys'
- 6:07Speaker 4: kind of friendly competition with each other. You guys always
- 6:10Speaker 4: consistently trying to one up each other. Someone goes out
- 6:13Speaker 4: there throw seven, I'm saying I'm throwing eight. The next
- 6:15Speaker 4: guy's trying to go nine. And then I was kind
- 6:18Speaker 4: of always what's the word envious? I guess I love
- 6:21Speaker 4: the way that you're starting pitchers come out of the
- 6:24Speaker 4: bullpen and your high five routine. Kind of how that
- 6:26Speaker 4: kind of started.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess since I got here really and I
- 6:32Speaker 2: actually just ran into Marco yesterday with the pods now,
- 6:35Speaker 2: but he was the one that was kind of the
- 6:36Speaker 2: older guy when I got here, and establishing the culture
- 6:39Speaker 2: and watching each other's bullpens every single day, being out
- 6:42Speaker 2: there before the game to be ready for the starter
- 6:44Speaker 2: coming in. It's just kind of the culture, at least
- 6:47Speaker 2: on the pitching side, that we do that kind of stuff.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I know the hitters have their things too, but we've
- 6:52Speaker 2: always been a tight knit group, and like you're saying,
- 6:54Speaker 2: we the competition and internally is really fun because guys
- 6:58Speaker 2: have really good years that you want to top somebody else.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Guys have really good games that you want to top them.
- 7:02Speaker 2: So it brings out the best side of us.
- 7:06Speaker 5: New sponsor alert shout out to Seat Geek over thirty
- 7:09Speaker 5: five million downloads, the number one rated ticketing app. It
- 7:12Speaker 5: is that time of year two and you can see
- 7:14Speaker 5: the code at the bottom. We'd love some support there.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Spring training, you have World Baseball Classic around the corner,
- 7:20Speaker 5: so if you want to look for tickets, Seat Geek
- 7:23Speaker 5: is the spot. But just for example, today's Monday, right,
- 7:26Speaker 5: and spring training games started a few days ago. Aj,
- 7:29Speaker 5: I'm looking at Tuesday since many people will catch this
- 7:32Speaker 5: show after the games have already started on Monday. But
- 7:36Speaker 5: we have Ranger Suarez making his debut down in Fort
- 7:39Speaker 5: Myers for the Red Sox on Tuesday. I see show
- 7:44Speaker 5: to Inmanaga making his spring training debut for the Cubbies
- 7:48Speaker 5: out in Arizona, Andrew Abbott for the Reds. Actually, Angel
- 7:52Speaker 5: Serpa too is going to start for the Brewers on Tuesday.
- 7:55Speaker 5: He was in their mind a pretty big acquisition coming
- 7:58Speaker 5: over from the Royals.
- 7:58Speaker 6: He's always had good.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Stuff, Gavin Stone against Gavin Williams with the Guardians and
- 8:03Speaker 5: the Dodgers. George Kirby is starting his first spring trading
- 8:06Speaker 5: outing for the Mariners. So there are some good spots
- 8:09Speaker 5: to look at to grab some tickets.
- 8:12Speaker 3: There are, and this is the time to go if
- 8:14Speaker 3: you want to get players up close and personal, if
- 8:17Speaker 3: you want a chance for an autograph, now is the
- 8:19Speaker 3: time in spring training because everyone's just more relaxed, and
- 8:25Speaker 3: the weather's great here in Arizona. So if you want
- 8:28Speaker 3: to come out and just get some sunshine if you're
- 8:31Speaker 3: stuck in I think Mark just said, you guys up
- 8:33Speaker 3: in North got two feet of snow, Like, come on
- 8:35Speaker 3: down to Florida. Don't stay too long, but come on
- 8:38Speaker 3: down for spring training. Get your tickets there and come
- 8:41Speaker 3: watch a beautiful game in the Cactus League or the
- 8:44Speaker 3: Great Full League.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Thanks to Seakik, Yeah, they've got your bag. Each ticket
- 8:48Speaker 5: is rated on a scale of one to ten. You
- 8:50Speaker 5: know you're getting a good deal there if you look
- 8:52Speaker 5: for the green dots. Green is good, Red is bad,
- 8:54Speaker 5: not complicated, and of course we have a code for
- 8:56Speaker 5: you guys. You can use code Territory ten for ten
- 8:59Speaker 5: percent off your next set of tickets at Sea Geek.
- 9:01Speaker 5: That's ten percent off any tickets. It doesn't have to
- 9:04Speaker 5: just be sports, concerts, festival, the whole deal promo code
- 9:07Speaker 5: Territory one zero. Make sure you click the link in
- 9:10Speaker 5: the description to download the app and have the code
- 9:13Speaker 5: automatically added to your accounts so you can use it later.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Thank you to see Geek any new pitches of Spring.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Because you're you're known as a tinkerer, so you're always trying.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Some people know that.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying a couple of things, but I've I
- 9:28Speaker 2: doubt they actually make it out of camp. I'm trying
- 9:30Speaker 2: to cutter right now.
- 9:31Speaker 3: You didn't throw a cutter because everyone throws like.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I didn't twenty four and then I stopped throwing it,
- 9:35Speaker 2: and now I might throw it again.
- 9:37Speaker 3: So what's gonna make the decision?
- 9:40Speaker 2: I guess just the feel I have Ford in Spring.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I'm gonna try it out and sert.
- 9:44Speaker 3: It doesn't work here in Arizona. The difference between Arizona
- 9:47Speaker 3: and Seattle atmosphere is a big difference. It's a huge difference. Yeah,
- 9:51Speaker 3: we'll see.
- 9:51Speaker 2: We have smarter people than me behind the computers that
- 9:54Speaker 2: are gonna help me out.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Okay, as long as you listen, as long as you
- 9:57Speaker 3: have that split, I think you're gonna be all right. Yeah,
- 9:59Speaker 3: all the chances are a keep throwing that. Do you
- 10:00Speaker 3: ever get tired of beating the crap out of cow
- 10:02Speaker 3: with that split? Never?
- 10:03Speaker 2: That's the fun part of it. Swinging missus okay too,
- 10:07Speaker 2: but I like just bury it on them.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Well yeah, but people swing and miss when it's in
- 10:11Speaker 3: the dirt. Yeah, when it's up here.
- 10:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Yeah. Did you ever come to you and be like
- 10:15Speaker 3: dude all the time?
- 10:16Speaker 2: Seriously, all the time I hear him talking behind my
- 10:19Speaker 2: back to it gets back to me.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Does it? I hear it when you? Uh? Was it
- 10:22Speaker 3: the postseason? It was in Detroit series? Was it you
- 10:25Speaker 3: that threw the split and you missed it for a passball?
- 10:27Speaker 3: And it was the first. I think it was the
- 10:28Speaker 3: first the whole year it was. It's not fair that
- 10:31Speaker 3: should go on your record like a knuckleball. Like, no,
- 10:37Speaker 3: if you were a pitcher, you would be on my side.
- 10:38Speaker 3: You would know that it can't ever be our fault, right,
- 10:41Speaker 3: it has to be somebody else. Yeah, but that thing
- 10:43Speaker 3: was so nasty. And I remember the stat when I
- 10:45Speaker 3: looked at the stat and it was it was the
- 10:47Speaker 3: first pass ball he had all year. Yeah, and he
- 10:50Speaker 3: caught like one hundred and thirty games.
- 10:52Speaker 2: It didn't even sound real. And somehow not being up
- 10:54Speaker 2: for a Gold Glove. I don't want to be together,
- 10:57Speaker 2: but he, I mean, that's no passball is in a
- 10:59Speaker 2: whole season.
- 11:00Speaker 3: He won the Platinum year ago. It doesn't get it
- 11:03Speaker 3: didn't make sense to me that it wasn't even nominated.
- 11:05Speaker 3: But that's I beat the drump for the m v
- 11:09Speaker 3: P all year, so should have been. Yeah, but you're biased.
- 11:12Speaker 3: I'm biased of a catcher, I get it. But yeah, yeah,
- 11:14Speaker 3: that was one of the craziest stats.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I mean I think he should have gotten it. I mean,
- 11:20Speaker 1: cal there's no reason that cal If I understand it.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Went's Aaron Judge, but come on, I mean, and logan
- 11:25Speaker 1: to that horn for him. I mean, this is a
- 11:27Speaker 1: guy that the home runs. Everything he's doing, not to
- 11:31Speaker 1: mention everything he's doing behind the plate to get you
- 11:34Speaker 1: guys through a game.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah, nobody's done it all like him. People have had
- 11:38Speaker 2: good seasons, but he did everything at an elite level
- 11:42Speaker 2: that if it doesn't go to him then then it's like,
- 11:45Speaker 2: I don't know how. I don't know how it ever
- 11:46Speaker 2: goes to a catcher for for doing every piece of
- 11:49Speaker 2: what he's doing. Nothing against Aaron Judge. I still have
- 11:52Speaker 2: to face him this year at some point. So got him.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Great player. Can't say anything bad, but cal Cal is very,
- 11:59Speaker 2: very good.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I think he was well deserving.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I was just gonna say, I mean, you know,
- 12:05Speaker 4: we give cal a lot of credit for what he
- 12:07Speaker 4: was able to do offensively, but just I mean, you're
- 12:09Speaker 4: someone who works with him every single day. You're pitching staff,
- 12:12Speaker 4: and I mean you got five monsters and your pitching
- 12:15Speaker 4: staff all throwing, you know, from different angles and different stuff.
- 12:18Speaker 4: You know, just kind of like Alana said, just kind
- 12:20Speaker 4: of give him his flowers for what he's able to
- 12:23Speaker 4: do behind the plate as well.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yeah, he's so good at it, knowing what works for
- 12:26Speaker 2: different people. Arsenals approaches sequences also like what gets you right.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He knows the language to use with us that makes
- 12:34Speaker 2: us the best version of ourselves. It's hard enough focusing
- 12:36Speaker 2: on your own career, I know, and I only have
- 12:38Speaker 2: to play thirty times a year. He's playing every single
- 12:41Speaker 2: day and worrying about twelve other guys thirteen other guys too,
- 12:44Speaker 2: and then putting up sixty homers.
- 12:45Speaker 3: It's it's unreal. It'll be fun to see what he does.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Do you a yeller at her? Or you? You need
- 12:50Speaker 3: kind all to come out there and yell at you.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Are you a joke? Do you need a joke? What
- 12:53Speaker 3: does he put his arm around you and coddle you?
- 12:55Speaker 3: What does he do for you?
- 12:57Speaker 2: He's been saying he thinks I need a joke here
- 12:58Speaker 2: and there, and I keep telling him that that's not
- 13:00Speaker 2: that's not the I he knows when it get on
- 13:03Speaker 2: me at the right times. I like that he knows
- 13:05Speaker 2: he has good feel for the people in the situation.
- 13:07Speaker 2: It's not all the time you prefer. I like when
- 13:11Speaker 2: he when he brings some attitude every once in a while.
- 13:13Speaker 3: So if he comes out of your mask on it,
- 13:15Speaker 3: puts his glove over his face, he's like, you suck,
- 13:18Speaker 3: what's wrong with you? And then you're like laughing, and
- 13:20Speaker 3: you know what he's saying, you need that every once
- 13:22Speaker 3: in a while. I agree with that. I agree, okay, Logan.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Gave's fires up after you. What's something we should know
- 13:30Speaker 1: about Gabe that we don't know?
- 13:32Speaker 3: Oh Man, something about Gabe.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Gosh, I'm trying to think if I know anything about Gabe.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Oh so oh no, no, Aloni, this is perfect starting pictures.
- 13:44Speaker 3: They can't hang out with the bullpen guy. They're the five,
- 13:48Speaker 3: they're the group five. They have to stick together. Saved
- 13:51Speaker 3: like twenty runs a year for me. So I can
- 13:54Speaker 3: only say good things about him. Uh, I don't know.
- 13:56Speaker 2: He's got a son that's been out here. He's one
- 14:00Speaker 2: hanging out at the field every day. Maybe asked about
- 14:02Speaker 2: that or Team USA. He's got a lot going on.
- 14:04Speaker 2: He loves a sauna back at home.
- 14:05Speaker 3: He's big. Did you have any I didn't hear much
- 14:12Speaker 3: nont here much.
- 14:13Speaker 6: I hear much.
- 14:15Speaker 3: I mean skiing scooble web. Gilbert would have been a nice.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah, there's some good other pictures. I can't hold a grudge.
- 14:23Speaker 1: It's true, true, Logan, thank you, You're a pleasure to
- 14:27Speaker 1: talk to, get to know. I'm glad you made the
- 14:29Speaker 1: decision on the pants. Appreciate that. Good luck this year.
- 14:32Speaker 7: Man.
- 14:32Speaker 1: We can't wait to see you guys back in that postseason.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks for having me on.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Welcome back to foul territory. Everybody. You can see that
- 14:40Speaker 1: we are at Mariners camp of course today A J. Pierzinski,
- 14:43Speaker 1: Kevin Palara, Alana Rizzo with you, and Rob Refsnyder sitting
- 14:47Speaker 1: next to Aj. Nice to see Rob in an M's UNI.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Not quite used to it yet coming over from the
- 14:53Speaker 1: Boston Red Solide. Rob, good to be with you. You
- 14:56Speaker 1: guys were just talking off camera about the fact that
- 14:58Speaker 1: you know you're still doing it. Kevin said that if
- 15:00Speaker 1: he had that swing, he'd still be playing too. What
- 15:03Speaker 1: are you excited the most about in terms of getting
- 15:05Speaker 1: going with the M's obviously a team that has sites
- 15:08Speaker 1: getting back to the postseason.
- 15:10Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean you can kind of feel the the
- 15:13Speaker 6: excitement even though like kind of the sense of urgency
- 15:15Speaker 6: even in spring training. They had such a great run
- 15:18Speaker 6: last year and added some some really good pieces with it,
- 15:21Speaker 6: with like Donovan and things like that. So now it's
- 15:24Speaker 6: a it's an exciting camp and you can kind of
- 15:27Speaker 6: feel it. You know, everyone's pretty focused and yeah, definitely.
- 15:30Speaker 3: What have they said to you as far as role
- 15:32Speaker 3: wise on this team? Are you're gonna do what you
- 15:34Speaker 3: normally do just bash lefties, play kind of all around
- 15:37Speaker 3: the outfield and just mash. Yeah, I mean Jerry Justin.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Dan's communication has been pretty pretty amazing honestly all off season,
- 15:44Speaker 6: even in camp, so a lot of looks against lefties
- 15:47Speaker 6: and mixing in the outfield. So yeah, but the communication
- 15:51Speaker 6: has been, you know, incredible so far.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Hey, Rob, what changed for you?
- 15:56Speaker 4: Because we were teammates in twenty seventeen in Toronto and
- 16:00Speaker 4: you kind of bounced around and then you end up
- 16:03Speaker 4: in Boston and find a home there for a couple
- 16:05Speaker 4: of years. You know, what's changed with you? Swing wise,
- 16:08Speaker 4: mentality wise, because you know, you were one of those
- 16:11Speaker 4: guys that was kind of a four A player and
- 16:13Speaker 4: now you know, four years later, you're one of the
- 16:15Speaker 4: best left handed you know, specialists in the game.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess, uh.
- 16:21Speaker 6: I mean at that time, I had really no like
- 16:23Speaker 6: identity as a ball player. I was I was mixing
- 16:25Speaker 6: in a bunch of different positions and really kind of
- 16:29Speaker 6: lost with my swing and really what I wanted to
- 16:31Speaker 6: focus on and kind of what I knew I could
- 16:34Speaker 6: handle what I couldn't. So, you know, at that time,
- 16:37Speaker 6: I was just searching, honestly, and but I had some
- 16:40Speaker 6: really really good teammates at you know, with with Kevin
- 16:43Speaker 6: and Steve Pierce at the time helped me a lot.
- 16:45Speaker 6: I don't think he really realized how much he helped
- 16:47Speaker 6: me at the time, but he really wanted me to
- 16:49Speaker 6: just kind of simplify it. And then you know, I
- 16:52Speaker 6: met some incredible hitting coaches. Kevin Knows, uh, Pete Fatsy
- 16:56Speaker 6: with the Red Sox, Uh, Cody Atkinson Uh. Now I
- 16:59Speaker 6: think assistant with Toronto, a couple others. I'm leaving a
- 17:04Speaker 6: couple out, but Borgs hitting coach now with the Nationals.
- 17:08Speaker 6: So without those guys, I'd be, you know, at home
- 17:11Speaker 6: doing something else. So a lot of credit goes to
- 17:13Speaker 6: those hitting coaches.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Yeah, man, was the one approach?
- 17:19Speaker 6: Was it in like twenty seventeen. It was big on
- 17:24Speaker 6: just like I don't know, it was like pull side air,
- 17:28Speaker 6: but no one really knew how to teach it. So
- 17:30Speaker 6: we had all this information and my assuming was just
- 17:32Speaker 6: super underplane. So underplane, I mean a lot of golfers
- 17:36Speaker 6: out there, I'm sure it's just I was just hooking
- 17:39Speaker 6: the ball to the left as already I was just
- 17:40Speaker 6: underneath the ball and then through contact my bat was
- 17:43Speaker 6: rolling up through the zone and just super super just
- 17:47Speaker 6: high up through the zone, so a lot of top spins.
- 17:49Speaker 6: So anything I pulled was either at the shortstop or
- 17:52Speaker 6: over the shortstop's head, and then I would catch it
- 17:54Speaker 6: deep and I would flush it to write, but I
- 17:56Speaker 6: didn't have the juice hit it out to write, so
- 17:58Speaker 6: it was just a whole lot of nothing. I always
- 18:01Speaker 6: did an okay job of controlling the strike zone, so
- 18:03Speaker 6: I think that helped me stay in Triple A and
- 18:06Speaker 6: get some some ambassing Triple A. Just working through those things,
- 18:09Speaker 6: just having I guess, like competitive at bats but without
- 18:12Speaker 6: those hitting coaches, and getting my swing a little bit
- 18:14Speaker 6: more flat through the zone and learning some things I
- 18:16Speaker 6: could handle some things I couldn't. Yeah, like I said,
- 18:19Speaker 6: I would be, I'd be doing something else.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Rob do you play to the park obviously you're going
- 18:24Speaker 1: from Fenway to Tea Mobile or do you just stay
- 18:27Speaker 1: within the same approach and not try to adjust too
- 18:31Speaker 1: much based on where you're playing.
- 18:34Speaker 6: I think it's important for younger players to realize who
- 18:37Speaker 6: you're facing. You know, AJ Kevin can talk about it.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Just there's some some pictures out there that it doesn't
- 18:44Speaker 6: match up with your swing and for you to try
- 18:46Speaker 6: to do certain things to those pictures, it's just not
- 18:48Speaker 6: any You're not going to have any success. So just
- 18:52Speaker 6: kind of realizing the pictures you can maybe take a
- 18:54Speaker 6: chance on, and then the pictures you realize, you know
- 18:56Speaker 6: they're going syncer away, change up away, like you're going
- 19:00Speaker 6: to kind of bury your head and try to drive
- 19:01Speaker 6: it in the four hole, hit over the second basement's head.
- 19:05Speaker 6: Also if you're not feeling that great that day and
- 19:07Speaker 6: you're kind of leaning off working the counts and trying
- 19:10Speaker 6: to get on base for the big guys in the order.
- 19:12Speaker 6: So just trying to play that kind of game within
- 19:15Speaker 6: the game has helped me a lot, especially as a
- 19:17Speaker 6: kind of platoon not playing every day. You got to
- 19:19Speaker 6: pick those kind of battles.
- 19:21Speaker 3: You're you're like the perfect guy for me that I
- 19:23Speaker 3: have conversations with players, especially veteran players for winning teams.
- 19:29Speaker 3: You know what your role is, right, You have a
- 19:31Speaker 3: specific job on the Mariners to hit lefties, play your
- 19:34Speaker 3: positions when you get in there, and then you also
- 19:36Speaker 3: help the young kids. You guys don't have a ton
- 19:38Speaker 3: of young kids, but the young kids you can help
- 19:40Speaker 3: out and show them how to be a bench guy
- 19:42Speaker 3: or show them how to how to make adjustments like
- 19:44Speaker 3: you did. I think teams that win have guys like you,
- 19:47Speaker 3: and that's why you're so valuable.
- 19:49Speaker 6: I appreciate it. Yeah, you know, awesome coming from you.
- 19:53Speaker 6: But yeah, I just think, you know, I've you know,
- 19:57Speaker 6: when I play with Kevin in twenty seventeen, I was
- 20:00Speaker 6: really searching kind of you know, staying afloat, and I
- 20:03Speaker 6: had some incredible veterans just take time out of their day.
- 20:07Speaker 6: And you know, I wasn't a father at the time,
- 20:09Speaker 6: but like these guys have kids, they have a lot
- 20:11Speaker 6: of responsibilities, places to be, and for them to take
- 20:16Speaker 6: extra time even away from the ball park through text
- 20:18Speaker 6: or phone calls, just to help me out. I mean,
- 20:21Speaker 6: I'm just always been so I guess gracious and thankful
- 20:26Speaker 6: for that. So anytime I can pay it forward. And
- 20:29Speaker 6: you know, I've had a couple guys kind of reach
- 20:30Speaker 6: out this camp and it's been cool, kind of digging
- 20:33Speaker 6: a little bit deeper and some of their their numbers
- 20:36Speaker 6: and things like that. Their approach. I think the easiest
- 20:38Speaker 6: thing you can do is adjust your approach in today's game,
- 20:41Speaker 6: because pictures are just so dang good.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yeah, to kind of piggyback on that. You know, I
- 20:48Speaker 4: know how difficult it be to be a platoon guy.
- 20:50Speaker 4: You know what's kind of your preparation to stay ready,
- 20:53Speaker 4: locked in every single day? And is there someone that's
- 20:55Speaker 4: kind of helped you, you know, learn how to be
- 20:58Speaker 4: the best at that position.
- 21:02Speaker 6: Trying to think of some some great I mean fatsy in.
- 21:07Speaker 6: You know, I still searching for a lot of different things,
- 21:08Speaker 6: but in twenty two I met Pete and just you know,
- 21:12Speaker 6: keeping it simple, but I think a j can talk
- 21:17Speaker 6: about it. We're always searching for a feeling or like
- 21:20Speaker 6: feeling really locked in and as a platoon, as.
- 21:23Speaker 3: A harder is a guy that doesn't get to play
- 21:26Speaker 3: every day.
- 21:26Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's important that the younger players know
- 21:29Speaker 6: and and things like that that that's just not a
- 21:32Speaker 6: reality in our role. You're not going to play. There's
- 21:35Speaker 6: days where I don't play for seven or eight days.
- 21:37Speaker 6: So I think, you know, mixed BP, which MIXEDVP is
- 21:41Speaker 6: just sounds like it is. It's just you know, I
- 21:43Speaker 6: never really know what's coming. So never getting too comfortable
- 21:46Speaker 6: in the cage I think is important because you're never
- 21:50Speaker 6: going to feel that comfortable in the game. So mixed speeds,
- 21:53Speaker 6: different angles and things like that have been really really
- 21:55Speaker 6: important for me. I think being an't about my time
- 22:00Speaker 6: on the road. There's usually in one cage, so I
- 22:02Speaker 6: try to get in there early, do my routines, to
- 22:05Speaker 6: stay out of some people's way, and just make sure
- 22:07Speaker 6: I have enough time to get my routine in and
- 22:09Speaker 6: things like that. But a lot of mix vp and
- 22:12Speaker 6: making sure I'm super slow and early and on time.
- 22:15Speaker 6: That's the most important thing. Staying behind the baseball, just
- 22:20Speaker 6: so you know, just not not trying to do too
- 22:23Speaker 6: much when you're up there is really important. I'm saying
- 22:26Speaker 6: a bunch of cliches, but that's really my routine. And
- 22:29Speaker 6: and being okay with not feeling locked in all the
- 22:31Speaker 6: time or ever, because it's it's it's really hard to
- 22:34Speaker 6: even do when you're in every day, every day guy.
- 22:36Speaker 6: So just making sure I'm behind the ball and when
- 22:39Speaker 6: I'm in the in the batter's box is just like
- 22:41Speaker 6: what I want to do to the baseball, not like
- 22:44Speaker 6: where my hands, where is my foot? There's my toe tap?
- 22:47Speaker 6: Because strike one, strike two really fast.
- 22:50Speaker 1: It's almost like being comfortable with the uncomfortable rob and
- 22:54Speaker 1: I think what I think about you, it's almost like
- 22:56Speaker 1: a Swiss army knife and that utility role of kind
- 22:59Speaker 1: of being able to I mean, and you have more
- 23:00Speaker 1: time as a corner outfielder than you do uh as
- 23:03Speaker 1: an infielder, but you can do it all. Do you
- 23:06Speaker 1: think that's I know, what's valuable. But do you think
- 23:09Speaker 1: that type of thing has been able to elongate your
- 23:12Speaker 1: career and and really find a place for yourself because
- 23:15Speaker 1: you can do so much.
- 23:18Speaker 6: I'm not I'm not exactly sure how I stay in the.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Game for this long, but because you can hit, because
- 23:24Speaker 3: you hit your teammate and you can play there.
- 23:27Speaker 6: But you know, honestly, being receptive to coaching and h
- 23:32Speaker 6: but knowing yourself is important, you know. I think when
- 23:35Speaker 6: I was younger, it's you know, you can you can
- 23:38Speaker 6: almost be too coachable, not having identity, so making sure
- 23:42Speaker 6: you're surrounded by people that that can help you identify
- 23:45Speaker 6: things that you're that you're good at and things that
- 23:47Speaker 6: you can work on. But yeah, just being receptive to
- 23:51Speaker 6: coaching and then always kind of pushing the limits in
- 23:54Speaker 6: the off season and the even season of like you know,
- 23:57Speaker 6: a training a certain way and things like that. I think, shoot,
- 24:02Speaker 6: my first year was in twenty fifteen in the major leagues,
- 24:05Speaker 6: and from twenty fifteen to now, how much like development
- 24:07Speaker 6: in the major leagues is going on. It's it's wild.
- 24:10Speaker 6: It's just it's constantly pushing the envelope and things like that.
- 24:14Speaker 6: So I think that's the biggest growth I've seen in
- 24:17Speaker 6: our game is just like you know, you're you're in
- 24:21Speaker 6: a coach's office at one thirty before a game and
- 24:23Speaker 6: you're kind of figuring out things you can get do
- 24:26Speaker 6: to get better that day. But also it's important that
- 24:29Speaker 6: you have a staff that recognizes and Dan said that
- 24:32Speaker 6: in our first meeting, like the most important thing is
- 24:35Speaker 6: the game at seven, so making sure you're ready for that.
- 24:37Speaker 6: So it's a huge balance and I think that's why
- 24:42Speaker 6: you see so much staff now.
- 24:44Speaker 3: It makes sense. It's tough, all right. Before to let
- 24:46Speaker 3: you go, I have to ask you this. I didn't
- 24:48Speaker 3: know this about you. So I just found out that
- 24:50Speaker 3: you were actually born in Korea. Yeah, but you grew
- 24:53Speaker 3: up in the US. And as the Olympics are going on,
- 24:56Speaker 3: the figure skater who was born in China just won
- 24:58Speaker 3: a gold medal for the US. Right, So if WBC
- 25:02Speaker 3: would you play for Korea or would you play for
- 25:04Speaker 3: the US. And then if they do happen this year,
- 25:06Speaker 3: let's say they play each other somewhere down the road,
- 25:08Speaker 3: what were you root for?
- 25:10Speaker 6: It's a great question, man, It's a tough question to
- 25:13Speaker 6: end it on.
- 25:15Speaker 1: No.
- 25:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I was adopted in Korea, born in Korea, and
- 25:19Speaker 6: then I grew up in south southern California. Both my
- 25:22Speaker 6: parents are are white. My dad's six foot eight. I
- 25:26Speaker 6: used to go to Lakers games and uh he looked
- 25:28Speaker 6: like Tilt Jackson.
- 25:29Speaker 3: So he like, would you say Phil Wareons? Yeah?
- 25:32Speaker 6: Yeah, all the all the guys had a couple of pops.
- 25:35Speaker 6: Uh no, on the on the JumboTron. He'd always like
- 25:38Speaker 6: he would get on it sometimes as like to looklike, yeah, So,
- 25:42Speaker 6: I mean, I don't know. I almost want to go
- 25:45Speaker 6: play in Korea in kind of when I was floundering
- 25:49Speaker 6: in the minor leagues a little bit and maybe like
- 25:53Speaker 6: twenty eighteen. But to answer your question, I have no idea.
- 25:58Speaker 3: But yeah, so then then it leads me to one
- 26:01Speaker 3: more question. Sorry, if you went and played in a couple.
- 26:04Speaker 6: Of good corner outfitters for Team USA, I know I understood,
- 26:10Speaker 6: but it was it this year judge and jeez, they
- 26:14Speaker 6: have every Roman judge who's in center.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Jeez, it's everybody, anybody, you can think of everything. Yeah, yeah,
- 26:27Speaker 3: I don't think you're out Iron Buxton. Yeah you're not
- 26:31Speaker 3: running those two. Yeah, they're stacked. So if you went and.
- 26:35Speaker 6: Played, I don't think I'm pitch hitting for any of those.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Even if they brought in a left I think. Okay,
- 26:40Speaker 3: I think if you if you were going to go
- 26:43Speaker 3: and play in Korea, because I I didn't think about that,
- 26:45Speaker 3: would you count as a because you know, they can
- 26:47Speaker 3: only have so many for as.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Would you count as a formal because you're you're born.
- 26:53Speaker 6: I'm sure the team would try to get me as
- 26:55Speaker 6: a non foreign, but I don't know. That's a good question.
- 26:58Speaker 3: We have to figure that one out and let you know. Yeah,
- 27:00Speaker 3: hopefully you don't have to worry about unless you want
- 27:02Speaker 3: to go like Adam Jones did at the end of
- 27:04Speaker 3: his career and play a couple of years ago.
- 27:05Speaker 6: Yeah he did Japan, right, Yeah, Yeah, Now I know
- 27:08Speaker 6: a couple of guys playing right now, Bobby dollbacks in Japan,
- 27:11Speaker 6: and yeah, I mean a bunch of guys are coming
- 27:14Speaker 6: back though as pitchers, and yeah, and getting a nice
- 27:16Speaker 6: little pay day. Okay, well thanks Rob, Yeah, thanks guys.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Gabe Spire now joining us from the Seattle Mariners, And
- 27:23Speaker 3: I just want to say this before we get into this.
- 27:24Speaker 3: He's a lefty, so he probably would have dominated me,
- 27:27Speaker 3: but his cousin, Justin Spiers, I was three for eight
- 27:30Speaker 3: off of So I'm just gonna say that I own
- 27:32Speaker 3: the whole Spire family. Okay, I'm just gonna I'm just
- 27:34Speaker 3: gonna put a whole umbrella over the entire Spire pitching family.
- 27:38Speaker 3: That three seventy five feels pretty good. So I owned
- 27:40Speaker 3: the whole family.
- 27:41Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm gonna have to show this clip to Justin.
- 27:44Speaker 8: Let him have a rebuttal hair. But I mean, man,
- 27:47Speaker 8: I guess you know we'll never know.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Yeah, right, like sinker cutter guys, I could hit those Yeah.
- 27:54Speaker 4: A j There's a reason I'm sitting here now because
- 27:57Speaker 4: the guy's like him. He used to eat my lunch.
- 28:00Speaker 6: You know.
- 28:00Speaker 4: I used to have to come off the bench and
- 28:01Speaker 4: pinch it against this guy, you know, go on the
- 28:04Speaker 4: on deck circle.
- 28:05Speaker 3: They'd bring him in and.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Then he just he just punched my ticket.
- 28:08Speaker 6: So I thank you for that.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Man.
- 28:11Speaker 8: Oh, I guess you're welcome. I'm sorry, I don't know
- 28:14Speaker 8: what to say.
- 28:14Speaker 3: I'm happy. I'm happy. Man.
- 28:16Speaker 6: Life's good.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Life's good. Have you seen his strikeout numbers, like justin
- 28:20Speaker 3: Joel was it thirty twenty one to one strikeout to
- 28:23Speaker 3: walk ratio last year? So he was punching everybody's ticket
- 28:27Speaker 3: last year. It's fun.
- 28:30Speaker 8: Strikeouts are my you know, it's the most fun you
- 28:32Speaker 8: have out there is striking guys out.
- 28:35Speaker 6: That's what you do.
- 28:35Speaker 3: So you're not just but you're not just a lefty specialist.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I mean you punch lefties and righties thout.
- 28:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, you know, it's taking some work to
- 28:44Speaker 8: get to that point. I you know, righty's always have
- 28:48Speaker 8: hit slightly better off of me, and this last year,
- 28:52Speaker 8: just having that four seam that I could throw into
- 28:55Speaker 8: them and up really was a game changer for me.
- 28:58Speaker 8: It was, you know, I would I think there were
- 29:00Speaker 8: some pretty big splits there early on, but last year
- 29:02Speaker 8: I was able to kind of clean those up. And
- 29:04Speaker 8: I think that that's I attribute that to the forcing
- 29:06Speaker 8: fastball to arieties for ninety seven.
- 29:09Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean that helps.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it's insane. Sorry A j But you
- 29:15Speaker 1: guys are just talking about the strikeout to walk ratio.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Only one other picture of the three hundred and sixty
- 29:22Speaker 1: one pitchers were better than you, and that guy just
- 29:25Speaker 1: won his second cy. Young. I mean, you've got to
- 29:28Speaker 1: take a lot of pride in that. I mean, being
- 29:30Speaker 1: able to strike guys out, because in this game, which
- 29:33Speaker 1: has changed so much over the course of the year,
- 29:35Speaker 1: is to either you know, guys strike out or hit
- 29:37Speaker 1: home runs. But you are just dominating regardless of who
- 29:41Speaker 1: you face. I mean, you got to take a.
- 29:43Speaker 7: Lot of pride in that, yeah, for sure, you know.
- 29:45Speaker 8: And and coming over to the Mariners, they they preach,
- 29:48Speaker 8: you know, dominate the zone. And I think I got
- 29:51Speaker 8: to thank them a lot because they showed me the
- 29:53Speaker 8: numbers on just you know, getting ahead of guys and
- 29:57Speaker 8: just being on the attack, being on the offense as
- 29:58Speaker 8: a pitcher, I think that's really hew And just limiting
- 30:01Speaker 8: free bases is so huge and just really challenging guys,
- 30:05Speaker 8: and you know, you find yourself in a lot more
- 30:07Speaker 8: to strike counts when you're you know, on the attack,
- 30:09Speaker 8: and then once you get to two strikes you can
- 30:11Speaker 8: kind of go from there and maybe expand a little
- 30:13Speaker 8: bit and you know, it worked out last year and
- 30:15Speaker 8: I you know, hoping to carry it into this year
- 30:18Speaker 8: as well.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Yeah, that was gonna be my question. The Seattle Mariners.
- 30:21Speaker 4: What have they done for you? And it sounds like
- 30:23Speaker 4: it's been more of a mentality than it has been
- 30:26Speaker 4: you know, physical adjustments.
- 30:28Speaker 7: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 30:29Speaker 8: I remember when I got claimed off waivers coming to
- 30:32Speaker 8: the Mariners, I was expecting, you know, we want you
- 30:34Speaker 8: to grip your slider a different way, we want you
- 30:35Speaker 8: to throw add new pitches and whatnot. But it was
- 30:39Speaker 8: quite the opposite. It was really you know, we claimed
- 30:42Speaker 8: you off waivers because we like what you're doing already.
- 30:44Speaker 8: We just need you to throw it in the zone
- 30:45Speaker 8: more and be more aggressive. And and you know, I
- 30:49Speaker 8: wouldn't say it was easy for me, but I really
- 30:52Speaker 8: just kind of put all my marbles into that basket
- 30:55Speaker 8: of really just attacking and and then you know, the
- 30:59Speaker 8: results fall and confidence followed, and then I was kind
- 31:02Speaker 8: of able to, you know, just have that snowball effect
- 31:05Speaker 8: and and really just keep attacking guys. And you know,
- 31:09Speaker 8: it became easier and easier as I went. I guess
- 31:11Speaker 8: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Kay, did you know that we were teammates for about
- 31:14Speaker 3: two months. I didn't realize this, not even months, about
- 31:16Speaker 3: three two weeks.
- 31:17Speaker 7: Really when you were brave, Oh my gosh.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you were really a brave, but you
- 31:21Speaker 3: were like a brave. So teople that don't know Gabe
- 31:23Speaker 3: was traded. You came up. You were originally with the
- 31:27Speaker 3: Red Sox and you got traded to the Tigers for Cesspadoes,
- 31:30Speaker 3: which is kind of nice. Yeah, that's cool, and for
- 31:33Speaker 3: Rick Pricello and then you went to the Diamondbacks right
- 31:38Speaker 3: for Ian Kroll, Ian Croll and you for cam Maven.
- 31:42Speaker 7: Yeah, that's I went to the Braves in that trade.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Yeah. And then two weeks later they traded you and
- 31:46Speaker 3: Shelby Miller for Dansby and Er and Aaron Blair. Yeah,
- 31:49Speaker 3: your teammates technically for those for about two weeks.
- 31:53Speaker 7: That's crazy.
- 31:54Speaker 3: I didn't know that.
- 31:54Speaker 8: I mean, yeah, I never wore a Brave Braves jersey
- 31:57Speaker 8: in my life, you know. I was part of that organize,
- 32:00Speaker 8: like you said, for two weeks in the off season. So,
- 32:02Speaker 8: but that's funny.
- 32:03Speaker 3: So good thing you don't get tattoos of all the
- 32:04Speaker 3: teams you've.
- 32:05Speaker 8: Been No, no, no, because I would have be covered. Yeah.
- 32:10Speaker 4: Yeah, how crazy of a journey if you you mentioned
- 32:13Speaker 4: going from you know, getting claimed off waivers to the
- 32:15Speaker 4: Mariners now about to pitch for Team USA. You know,
- 32:19Speaker 4: could you envision that maybe four or five years ago.
- 32:22Speaker 8: No, you know, it's it's it's been crazy for me
- 32:26Speaker 8: to kind of take a step back and reflect on,
- 32:29Speaker 8: you know, how I've gotten to this point. It's been
- 32:31Speaker 8: a windy road, but you know, I wouldn't change it.
- 32:35Speaker 8: I've I've made a lot of good friends in each
- 32:38Speaker 8: organization I've been with, learned a lot from different coaches
- 32:40Speaker 8: in each organization I've been with, And you know, it's
- 32:44Speaker 8: it's the road I've been on. Like I said, it's
- 32:46Speaker 8: been windy, but it has gotten me to this point,
- 32:47Speaker 8: so I wouldn't change it. It's been learned a lot,
- 32:51Speaker 8: and I'm happy to be a Mariner. I feel at
- 32:53Speaker 8: home here and hopefully I can pitch here in a
- 32:56Speaker 8: Mariner's uniform for a long time.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Day Big Sonica logan Gilbert told us your big sauna guy,
- 33:02Speaker 1: So I need to know how particular you are when
- 33:05Speaker 1: picking out the sauna. What are the things you have
- 33:07Speaker 1: to have?
- 33:09Speaker 8: Oh, it has to be a traditional sauna over infrared.
- 33:13Speaker 8: I like the actual heater with the rocks and you
- 33:16Speaker 8: can throw the water on it and steam it up
- 33:18Speaker 8: in there. But yeah, no, the Mariners have one in
- 33:20Speaker 8: the clubhouse, and I was in there quite a bit
- 33:22Speaker 8: and and it didn't force me, but I really wanted
- 33:26Speaker 8: to get one of my own to put in my house,
- 33:29Speaker 8: and and I did. I pulled the trigger and got
- 33:32Speaker 8: one installed in my house and I'm in there every night.
- 33:35Speaker 8: It's it's part of the routine now, it's relaxing. I
- 33:38Speaker 8: feel like it helps with my recovery. And I get
- 33:41Speaker 8: my wife in there too. It's it's become a little
- 33:44Speaker 8: u you know, ritual of ours. So it's a good
- 33:47Speaker 8: time and I really do enjoy it.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Are you super particular a lot of it? I wonder
- 33:53Speaker 3: if you have like an exact temperature or you like
- 33:55Speaker 3: it has to be at two hundred and one degree.
- 34:00Speaker 8: Well, yeah, it's like normally I go two hundred for
- 34:04Speaker 8: twenty minutes and bored.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Though because I try to do it, because I can't
- 34:08Speaker 3: take my I'm afraid my phone's gonna blow up in
- 34:10Speaker 3: the sauna. Yeah, for twenty minutes.
- 34:12Speaker 8: I you know, breathe, work on my try to like
- 34:15Speaker 8: meditate and relax, you know, the first ten minutes, and
- 34:17Speaker 8: when it's two hundred degrees it's it's really hot in there.
- 34:20Speaker 8: In the first ten minutes is relaxing, and then the
- 34:22Speaker 8: next ten minutes is a bit of a grind and
- 34:24Speaker 8: you really gotta kind of dig deep, work on your
- 34:27Speaker 8: breathing and all that. But when you get out, you
- 34:29Speaker 8: just feel so refreshed. And I do it at night
- 34:31Speaker 8: before bed, so it helps me fall asleep off faster
- 34:35Speaker 8: right to bed, or just I mean I should I
- 34:36Speaker 8: rinse it off, because if you go.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Sauna right to bed, there's no way your wife's allowing you.
- 34:41Speaker 7: No, no, no, no.
- 34:42Speaker 8: I I probably go in and then have about an
- 34:45Speaker 8: hour before I go to sleep. It's I, you know,
- 34:48Speaker 8: cool off, and cause even if you you rinse off,
- 34:51Speaker 8: you're still sweating after, so you need to take a second.
- 34:53Speaker 8: I like to stretch a little bit because you're you know.
- 34:56Speaker 3: You're hot in the sauna.
- 34:57Speaker 8: It's not quite big enough. I gotta like a two
- 35:00Speaker 8: persons onner. So there's a there's a couple of things
- 35:03Speaker 8: I can do in there.
- 35:04Speaker 3: But the other day I was in one and it
- 35:06Speaker 3: was a it was at a country club and there
- 35:09Speaker 3: was a guy in there stretching and it was like
- 35:10Speaker 3: the most awkward thing. I'm in the corner, sitting there
- 35:14Speaker 3: in the corner, all all scrunched up, and he's like
- 35:16Speaker 3: bending over, touching his toes with just a towel. I'm like,
- 35:20Speaker 3: this is really awol.
- 35:21Speaker 7: You should get your own then you don't have to
- 35:22Speaker 7: worry about that.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Hey that that that playoff share money made a little
- 35:27Speaker 4: easier to buy that sauna, I'm sure.
- 35:30Speaker 7: Oh yeah, oh yeah, that's always nice, you know it is.
- 35:34Speaker 7: It's a like it was.
- 35:36Speaker 8: I was just telling somebody earlier, like the postseason it
- 35:38Speaker 8: was like the best part of last season, absolutely, but
- 35:42Speaker 8: also the hardest part. You know, I've never pitched in
- 35:44Speaker 8: the postseason, and you know, I've been done in the
- 35:47Speaker 8: end of September every year, and that extra you know,
- 35:49Speaker 8: three weeks of baseball. It's tough on the body and
- 35:54Speaker 8: all that. But like I said, also the best part
- 35:56Speaker 8: of last season. But you know, that playoff share it
- 35:59Speaker 8: was nice to see hit the Bay account and so yeah,
- 36:01Speaker 8: I can't complain about that.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:03Speaker 4: I had asked Logan about, you know, being in the
- 36:06Speaker 4: dugout when Cal Rowley hit that home winning Game five.
- 36:08Speaker 4: It was one of the best atmospheres, you know, I'd
- 36:10Speaker 4: ever seen in a baseball stadium.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Were you still in the.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Bullpen during that time?
- 36:15Speaker 3: And what was kind of that view from the bullpen?
- 36:17Speaker 4: Where had you already come in the game.
- 36:19Speaker 8: I had already pitched. I was in the dugout. But yeah,
- 36:22Speaker 8: I mean, Cal he did it all season long. It
- 36:24Speaker 8: was like, you know, at times it's almost expected for
- 36:28Speaker 8: him to go yard, but I mean, that was such
- 36:29Speaker 8: a big moment, and you know, super happy for Cal.
- 36:33Speaker 8: He's he hasn't changed at all. You know, some people
- 36:35Speaker 8: hit the limelight and they changed a little bit. He's
- 36:37Speaker 8: he's been the same guy. He's you know, he's the
- 36:39Speaker 8: leader of this team. He's a grinder back there in
- 36:42Speaker 8: the plate, and you know he hits from both sides
- 36:45Speaker 8: of them. He's just so special, such a special player
- 36:47Speaker 8: and so special for this organization, this team.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Dabe, tell me about the tats I think you have
- 36:52Speaker 1: on your knees, right, I can see some tats.
- 36:55Speaker 8: Oh yeah, yeah, I've got up both my thighs. I've
- 37:01Speaker 8: got one on my shin here, I've got my arms.
- 37:06Speaker 8: I was kind of going hard there for a little bit.
- 37:08Speaker 8: I haven't had one in a couple of years now.
- 37:11Speaker 8: I had my son two years ago and and that
- 37:14Speaker 8: slowed the tattoo process down a little bit.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Go full body? Well, would you go full body?
- 37:20Speaker 7: You know, it's hard to say. I mean, it's I
- 37:22Speaker 7: think I would.
- 37:24Speaker 8: I don't know if I would have like my neck
- 37:25Speaker 8: and face done, but you know, I'd like to continue
- 37:28Speaker 8: on my arms, maybe creep onto the my chest a
- 37:30Speaker 8: little bit or something like that, but full body probably not.
- 37:34Speaker 7: But are you I definitely want more.
- 37:36Speaker 1: What about your left arm? Did you tat your because
- 37:38Speaker 1: a lot of guys won't tat the arm that they
- 37:41Speaker 1: throw with. Do you have them on your left?
- 37:43Speaker 6: Yes?
- 37:43Speaker 8: The first tattoo I ever got was on my left arm.
- 37:46Speaker 8: It was right here as my grandpa had passed away,
- 37:48Speaker 8: and I got a little remembrance tattoo for him. But yeah,
- 37:52Speaker 8: I mean I have I think I have more on
- 37:54Speaker 8: my on my left arm than I do on my right.
- 37:56Speaker 8: So I need to go under my right and even
- 37:58Speaker 8: it out. But I said, it's just slowed down since
- 38:01Speaker 8: I had my son. It's just it's just not as
- 38:03Speaker 8: much of a priority now, I guess. But I do
- 38:06Speaker 8: need to make some time and go get more because
- 38:07Speaker 8: I do.
- 38:08Speaker 3: I do want more.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Is there a Team USA one coming here soon?
- 38:11Speaker 3: If you guys win the gold?
- 38:13Speaker 6: Uh?
- 38:14Speaker 8: You know, I haven't considered that. Maybe if we win
- 38:16Speaker 8: the gold, you know, I'd have to consider it, but uh,
- 38:19Speaker 8: I'm not going to commit to anything just yet.
- 38:21Speaker 3: How excited are you for it? Talk about how excited
- 38:23Speaker 3: you are to pitch for the USA.
- 38:25Speaker 8: So excited I mean to to be able to wear
- 38:28Speaker 8: USA across the chest and play the game I love
- 38:31Speaker 8: is is a dream come true. You know, we were
- 38:34Speaker 8: talking about it earlier. I never really expected this, so
- 38:38Speaker 8: it was a bit of a shock to me to
- 38:39Speaker 8: get the call, and when I did, it was it
- 38:42Speaker 8: was a no brainer for me. I mean, just such
- 38:44Speaker 8: a such a cool event to be a part of
- 38:47Speaker 8: and to be in that locker like I feel like
- 38:49Speaker 8: it fully hasn't hit me yet. But once I feel
- 38:51Speaker 8: like I put the jersey on and get in that
- 38:52Speaker 8: locker room with some of those guys, it's gonna be like,
- 38:54Speaker 8: oh my gosh, this is this is crazy. And you know,
- 38:58Speaker 8: I've talked to some of the guys in the clubhouse
- 38:59Speaker 8: that have played in the WBC and they just say
- 39:01Speaker 8: it's it's an experience like no other, and just just
- 39:05Speaker 8: looking forward to getting to going.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Who are you most excited about meeting?
- 39:09Speaker 8: I mean Clayton Kershaw, is you know tired, Yeah, but
- 39:13Speaker 8: he's playing I know, no, he he jumps to the
- 39:16Speaker 8: top of my mind for sure.
- 39:17Speaker 7: Just you know, arguably the best picture of our generation.
- 39:20Speaker 8: And just just to be able to shake his hand
- 39:23Speaker 8: and and you know, talk to him about pitching is
- 39:26Speaker 8: something I'm really looking forward to.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Curse is a great guy, first ballot. Hall of Famers
- 39:31Speaker 1: certainly gave the text thread I heard the chat for
- 39:35Speaker 1: the WBC has been lit as the kids say Corbyn.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Carrol was saying that some of the hotel choices are
- 39:41Speaker 1: a little suspect. But what other things are you guys
- 39:44Speaker 1: talking about in that chat? What can you share with
- 39:45Speaker 1: us about the conversation so far?
- 39:48Speaker 8: Just everyone's really excited, you know, everyone's throwing the America
- 39:52Speaker 8: gifts out there, and you know, I think I've seen
- 39:54Speaker 8: some Kenny Powers ones and if you guys know, you
- 39:57Speaker 8: know it's he's a just a funny show.
- 40:00Speaker 7: But yeah, it's just, uh, it's super light.
- 40:02Speaker 8: You know, guys are having fun, super excited about it,
- 40:05Speaker 8: and it's it's just cool to you know, have some
- 40:09Speaker 8: of those guys in my phone, you know, like honestly
- 40:11Speaker 8: like to see Clayton Kershaw texting, like and I'm getting
- 40:15Speaker 8: text from Clayton versus position players text right, yeah, so
- 40:19Speaker 8: our our text that is just the pictures. And you
- 40:21Speaker 8: guys just you just don't want to be part of
- 40:22Speaker 8: the team, you guys. Yeah another name, yeah, you know,
- 40:25Speaker 8: like just to it's wild. You know Andy pettit's the
- 40:28Speaker 8: pitching coach. I have Andy Pettitt's number saving my phone now.
- 40:31Speaker 8: It's just, uh, it's just kind of crazy, how how
- 40:34Speaker 8: all this is going, and uh just really excited.
- 40:37Speaker 6: That's awesome.
- 40:39Speaker 3: That's great.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it is awesome. What an honor well earned,
- 40:44Speaker 1: the well deserved game, thanks so much.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Hold on, all these guys are walking by and they're
- 40:48Speaker 3: all jacked. Wait only sees Kershall walk around those shirt
- 40:51Speaker 3: on it, He's gonna be like, wait, wait, this is
- 40:54Speaker 3: what they look like.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Is an interesting uh like kind of a dad bod.
- 40:59Speaker 1: But you know what, hirsh has earned every ounce of
- 41:01Speaker 1: that dad whatever the heck he wants to do.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Okay, I agree with that. I agree with that.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Gabe. Good luck man, have a great season. It's such
- 41:09Speaker 1: a pleasure to get to know you. Can't wait to
- 41:11Speaker 1: see you guys, what you do this year. Thanks for
- 41:13Speaker 1: being with us
- 41:14Speaker 3: Thank you, thank you for having me and I appreciate it.
