Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another Danish episode? Luna: Yeah, I'm excited! What are we learning today? Lucas: Well, we've talked a lot about zoo animals — their names, sizes, even baby animals. But what about colors? Luna: Oh, right! Like describing what color the animals are. That would be fun. Lucas: Exactly. So today we'll learn some color adjectives and use them with zoo animals. Ready to start? Luna: Absolutely. Let's do it. Lucas: First phrase: 'Løven er gul.' That means 'The lion is yellow.' Say it with me: Løven er gul. Luna: Løven er gul. Lucas: Good. 'Løven' is the lion, 'er' is is, and 'gul' is yellow. So 'Løven er gul.' One more time. Luna: Løven er gul. Lucas: Perfect. Now, 'Elefanten er grå.' The elephant is gray. 'Grå' is gray. Say it. Luna: Elefanten er grå. That's easy — grå sounds like 'grow' but with a soft r. Lucas: Exactly. And 'Giraffen er brun.' The giraffe is brown. 'Brun' is brown. Your turn. Luna: Giraffen er brun. Hmm, brun is a bit like 'brown' but with a Danish u. Lucas: Right. Next: 'Aben er brun.' The monkey is also brown. So same color, different animal. Luna: Aben er brun. So both the giraffe and the monkey are brun? Lucas: Yes, they can be. And finally: 'Pingvinen er sort og hvid.' The penguin is black and white. 'Sort' is black, 'hvid' is white. Luna: Pingvinen er sort og hvid. That's a mouthful! Sort og hvid. Lucas: You said it well. Let's review all five: Løven er gul, Elefanten er grå, Giraffen er brun, Aben er brun, Pingvinen er sort og hvid. Luna: Løven er gul. Elefanten er grå. Giraffen er brun. Aben er brun. Pingvinen er sort og hvid. Got them! Lucas: Great. Now, let's imagine we're at the zoo together. I'll point to an animal, and you describe it. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: There's a lion. What do you say? Luna: Løven er gul. Lucas: Perfect. Now an elephant. Luna: Elefanten er grå. Lucas: Excellent. And a giraffe? Luna: Giraffen er brun. Lucas: You're doing great. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Danish, you know these lessons stay ad-free because of listener support. If today was useful, you can help keep it going at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Just a simple way to say thanks. Luna: Yeah, it's a nice way to support the show if you find it helpful. I love that we can learn without ads. Lucas: Exactly. So back to the zoo. There's a monkey — what color is it? Luna: Aben er brun. Lucas: And a penguin? Luna: Pingvinen er sort og hvid. Lucas: Wow, you nailed it. Let's do a quick drill. I say the animal, you say the color sentence. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: Lion. Luna: Løven er gul. Lucas: Elephant. Luna: Elefanten er grå. Lucas: Giraffe. Luna: Giraffen er brun. Lucas: Monkey. Luna: Aben er brun. Lucas: Penguin. Luna: Pingvinen er sort og hvid. Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. Now, remember that in Danish, colors come after the animal, like 'Løven er gul.' Not 'gul løven'. Luna: Right, the word order is different from English. Subject then 'er' then adjective. Lucas: Exactly. And colors don't change for singular nouns — 'gul' stays 'gul' whether it's 'løven' or 'giraffen'. Luna: So 'giraffen er gul' would also be correct if the giraffe were yellow? Lucas: Yes, but typically giraffes are brown. But grammatically, it works. Good question. Luna: Okay, let me try describing a different animal. What about a polar bear? Isbjørnen er hvid? Lucas: Yes! Isbjørnen er hvid. The polar bear is white. See, you're already making new sentences. Luna: That's cool. So I can use these color words for any animal. Lucas: Absolutely. Let's practice one more time with all five phrases. Repeat after me: Løven er gul. Luna: Løven er gul. Lucas: Elefanten er grå. Luna: Elefanten er grå. Lucas: Giraffen er brun. Luna: Giraffen er brun. Lucas: Aben er brun. Luna: Aben er brun. Lucas: Pingvinen er sort og hvid. Luna: Pingvinen er sort og hvid. Lucas: Fantastic. You've added five new color sentences to your Danish. Practice them until we meet again. Luna: I will. Thanks for another fun episode, Lucas. Lucas: Thanks for joining, Luna. And thanks to all our listeners. Keep practicing and see you next time.
