- 0:23None. A hamster with a blump pen knife
- 0:35for doing. Quicker, quicker.
- 0:40Quicker. I thought you were a podcaster.
- 0:42I thought you're a podcaster. Look, I am calling an ambulance
- 0:45to take you back to psychiatric from which you and Sarah Chu
- 0:49have obviously escaped from. Listen, duck a ho.
- 0:52Let's just sit down, have a coffee record, an audio
- 0:55commentary. We'll talk about this
- 0:58reasonably. Welcome back to a hamster with
- 1:03a. Blood.
- 1:04Penknife The Doctor Who Commentary Podcast Hello, how
- 1:09are you doing today? Very well.
- 1:12Now look, if I was to say to you that we are going to have a 90
- 1:17minute discussion about the Doctor Who television movie, how
- 1:22would that make you feel? Wonderful.
- 1:25Well, why is that? Because it's my favorite.
- 1:28Is it your favorite new story ever?
- 1:30One of them? Why it's?
- 1:34Just very It has a very special place in the history of Doctor
- 1:37Who, doesn't it? It's that halfway point between
- 1:40classic and new, and it at that time it was the only hint of a
- 1:46new series of a new beginning. Which I was going to ask you, do
- 1:49you think this informs a new series?
- 1:52No. I I do not mark a little bit,
- 1:56maybe not. The flashy visuals.
- 1:57The romanticised Dr. It's very of its time now.
- 2:03I know, but fuck me. There is nothing more 90s than
- 2:05this TV movie. How it looks, how it's shot, the
- 2:09action, the witty dialogue, the sort of style of the direction.
- 2:13There ain't nothing in Doctor Who like this.
- 2:15It's. Own unique entity, isn't it?
- 2:18And it brought us Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor.
- 2:21So we should all forever be grateful for that.
- 2:24Are you quite queen on Paul McGann as the Doctor of?
- 2:27Course. Is he your?
- 2:28Favorite Doctor Who? Well.
- 2:29Yeah, I think you say your favorite is your first.
- 2:31Was he your first? He was my well, it depends what
- 2:35you called him about first. Is it?
- 2:39Ohh what's that alarm? Alarm.
- 2:43Clock. Alarm.
- 2:45Alarm clock. Ohh God what are we doing?
- 2:51Power. Sorry about that.
- 2:54I don't know. I just.
- 2:55Said it. I don't.
- 2:56Know when we're going to record, I suppose that.
- 2:58Was to wake up from your nap, wasn't?
- 3:01It anyway we'll talk about. Firsts here.
- 3:02Oh, yeah. Sorry.
- 3:03So, Well, there's several different versions of firsts,
- 3:06isn't it? There's the 1st Doctor that you
- 3:07ever watched. Yeah.
- 3:09There is the first. Is this the 1st Doctor you had
- 3:11Italians with? No, I mean and then there's is
- 3:16this. The first doctor to slide into
- 3:18your DMS. There's, I suppose.
- 3:19It's the first Doctor. That was the Doctor whenever you
- 3:22were born, in a way. That could be.
- 3:24And also there is the first Doctor that was announced as the
- 3:29Doctor when you were a fan, if you see what I mean.
- 3:32So that's how Paul McGann is my doctor because obviously I knew
- 3:37Doctors one to seven and that was all there was.
- 3:41And then I remember Paul McGann being announced as the Doctor.
- 3:45He was a brand new Doctor. So that's why he's my first.
- 3:49How do how do you do your first? He was a 32 year old called Andy
- 3:56and I was only 15 so. I was very dodgy actually, I.
- 4:00Did have a date with a doctor once.
- 4:01Did I have to tell you about that?
- 4:03No. An actual date with a doctor.
- 4:05Yeah. And I went halfway through the
- 4:07dinner, right, with this swanky restaurant.
- 4:09And halfway through dinner, he went across the table and he
- 4:11went, Joe, I save lives, you know, I was like, oh, I'll put
- 4:15bread on a shelf I consider my first.
- 4:22It's tough. I consider my first Doctor be
- 4:23Sylvester McCoy because that's the first one.
- 4:25I saw. Well, the first one you saw and
- 4:26he was the Doctor when? Not when you were born.
- 4:28No. When I was born, I was born.
- 4:30Between Oh yeah, Yeah, Soldi and Pango I was born.
- 4:33But he was the sort of the current doctor, I suppose.
- 4:36So I could have said that Sylvester McCoy was my doctor
- 4:39because he would have been still the sort of current for me.
- 4:41But no, Paul McGann was announced as a new Doctor.
- 4:44He was my new beginning. Well, and the real reason I
- 4:48consider Paul McGann to be my first new Doctor is not because
- 4:52of the TV movie, although I will get into first watching that in
- 4:56a minute. It's because those Big Finish
- 4:59Paul McGann audios was and the BBC Paul McGann books or 8th
- 5:05Doctor books. That was all of my because I
- 5:07obviously I didn't see my Battlefield was my first.
- 5:10I came in very late, so my new Doctor Who was all 8th Doctor
- 5:14stuff. Yeah.
- 5:15So really, my big introduction to fresh Doctor Who was those
- 5:19novels and those audios. So Paul McGann was the
- 5:22conception of Doctor Ho. He conceived you?
- 5:25Right. Yeah, well, in a way it was the
- 5:29sirens of time, but yeah. I absolutely love this.
- 5:34When it came out, like when it aired, me and my friend Mark
- 5:37Potter, we were quoting lines like the Asian child and things
- 5:42like this, so quotable we're, I mean, we're going to be in
- 5:44trouble. Watching this, you thought you
- 5:45were in trouble with us doing Battlefield and AD renovation.
- 5:48You got a lot of trouble ahead for this one.
- 5:51Did you watch this when it was broadcast on BBC One?
- 5:55On the Maybank holiday. I was part of that 9.1 million.
- 5:58Where you put? Well, but did you get the video
- 6:00beforehand? No, I was.
- 6:02One of those people there at midnight.
- 6:04And it was. Out I got.
- 6:05I got it from Tesco. Like the weekend before it was
- 6:07just out on video go. It was on video available
- 6:10before. You didn't have to go to that
- 6:11midnight thing that was like a week before because I don't
- 6:14know, I had the video while it was.
- 6:16On video before they aired it on the TV.
- 6:19That is madness. And they still got 9 million
- 6:22viewers, Yeah. I got it from Tesco.
- 6:26Look, I'm going to say for anybody who is obsessed with
- 6:29numbers in Doctor Who and who seem to think that numbers
- 6:32equates quality, then on this account the TV movie is
- 6:386,000,000 more popular than The War Games episode 10.
- 6:42It's also about 7,000,000 more important than Heaven Sent and
- 6:46Hell Ben. Like.
- 6:49In terms of numbers, it outclasses a lot of Doctor Who 9
- 6:52million. It's somewhere in the top 50, I
- 6:54think, in terms of ratings. Before we start, can I set the
- 6:57scene of what was on BBC One on 27th of May 19?
- 7:0286. I happen to have the Radio Times
- 7:04I've kept. What from then?
- 7:05Yeah, I could have signed by Paul McGann.
- 7:07That is fabulous. Thank you.
- 7:09Well, please very colored. This is too.
- 7:11What for TV? Putting it in context.
- 7:13So on BBC One that night, Yeah, well, 5:35, we had neighbours.
- 7:18Oh my God, what was the synopsis of Neighbours?
- 7:20Alf puts Collins mind at rest and Elises tutoring days are
- 7:24over. Hannah reaps the rewards of
- 7:27going her. Oh, Hannah Martin Alf is not
- 7:29home and away I. Don't know.
- 7:31I don't. Know Alf and.
- 7:32Then at 6:00 was the Red Nose Awards.
- 7:35Andy Peters hosts the special Live and Kicking and Comic
- 7:38Relief awards show, which includes awards for the good and
- 7:41bad in a variety of categories. Angus Deaton dolls out.
- 7:45The booby prizes do. You realise Andy Peters is like
- 7:50the only children just presented.
- 7:51That hasn't been cancelled. Now we're waiting for it,
- 7:54though. And then the.
- 7:55The evening continues 7:00 That's Show Business Tonight, a
- 8:00special edition to celebrate 100 years of cinema in Britain.
- 8:04Stephen Tompkinson from Balicus Angel and actress Liz Fraser
- 8:08take on Brian Glover, star of CARES, an Alien 3.
- 8:12And comedian Lily Savage, hosted by Mike Smith.
- 8:14Ryan Glover, Yes. And Lily Savage of I'll be a
- 8:20ghost. Who needs ATV movie that night?
- 8:22I know Jesus is. Star studying on BBC One this
- 8:25night. At 7:30, yeah.
- 8:26And then you're getting your, you know, your.
- 8:28Dinner ready? Juices are flowered.
- 8:30Go on. Watchdog Health Check, the
- 8:32programme that monitors the state of the nation's health.
- 8:36Puts products and treatments to the test and exposes bad
- 8:39practice the. State of the nation's health?
- 8:41They wouldn't do that nowadays. Jesus, it'd be flatlining.
- 8:44Presented by Judith Han and Alice Beer with reporters
- 8:47Jonathan Maitland, Denise Mahoney and Andy Webb.
- 8:50What happened to all those? Celebrities, I don't know.
- 8:52At 8:00, it's EastEnders. Oh God.
- 8:55The Fowlers keep their secret. Fowlers.
- 8:58My God, David goes sightseeing. Bianca cuts a new deal and Kathy
- 9:03plans her return to work. And then the choice of the day.
- 9:078:30 Doctor Who. After an absence of seven years,
- 9:11a doctor returns and a feature length adventure starring Paul
- 9:14McGann in bold writing. On New Year's Eve 1999, a
- 9:17British police box materializes in San Francisco's Chinatown.
- 9:22I'll pass me a tissue. I've just come in my knickers.
- 9:25So 830, what did ITV put on against?
- 9:27It oh God, have a look. Oh, take your pick The game show
- 9:30which challenges contestants to take money or open the box
- 9:34presented by Desi O'Connor. Wow.
- 9:36So I wonder how that did. Yeah, that's what happened when
- 9:40Rusty Davis came back. Remember, they were putting
- 9:41celebrity wrestling up against things back when they knew they
- 9:44were on to a loser. So I mean, there wasn't that
- 9:46much competition. And then on Channel 4, The
- 9:49Greatest, the last in a series of which viewers have had the
- 9:51chance to vote for Britain Sports Star of the Century.
- 9:55What This ain't the bloody Radio Times podcast.
- 9:57They've got their own podcast. And Channel 5 didn't exist then,
- 10:00so we didn't have much competition in the UK when.
- 10:03This went out. BBC Three didn't exist.
- 10:05No, I player didn't exist. I mean, it was once and gone.
- 10:10Or you bought a video the week before.
- 10:12Oh yeah. Yeah, Jesus Christ, I bet you
- 10:15wore out the tracking on your video.
- 10:20The bit where Paul McGann on his show so.
- 10:22I knew you were going to say let's start the.
- 10:24Film and we can. Carry on the discussion Can't.
- 10:26We OK. Well, what?
- 10:27Thank you for giving us such insight.
- 10:29Into the scene. I mean, I did watch it when it
- 10:32went out as well, even though I had.
- 10:33I didn't record some of those celebrities, but I was only 16
- 10:37at the time. I was just coming up, coming out
- 10:39and having sex and stuff. I I weren't watching a lot of
- 10:42TV, so I don't know what the celebrities were really of the
- 10:44time. OK, well, would you care to
- 10:46count as him? Absolutely.
- 10:48Into into a long time ago and my own plan.
- 10:51Oh my God. Yeah, we get a lot of info
- 10:53straight away, don't we? Right.
- 10:55Get the Blu-ray ready. I'm ready.
- 10:56Are you sure your screen's off? Paused.
- 10:59OK, everybody get ready. Get your.
- 11:02It's on iPlayer. Now, isn't it?
- 11:03Get your own. Players Yeah, buy the Blu-ray,
- 11:06because Blu-ray, the version on the iPlayer is not very good.
- 11:09It's very it's quite a bit blurry.
- 11:12Not like my nice sharp Blu-ray. OK, 321 go.
- 11:16Here we go, We'll. Get this.
- 11:18Narration by oh, what have you done?
- 11:22What's happened? You pressed the wrong button.
- 11:24Copyright violation. What have you pressed?
- 11:27Sorry, false start, everyone. We're going to go.
- 11:29We're going to do a temporal orbit and start again.
- 11:31What have you pressed? Say.
- 11:33Copyright violation, You press. Something Oh dude, Right, I'm
- 11:37going to keep talking about the T.
- 11:38Talking. Let's carry on.
- 11:39We're not stopping. Did you ever hear who else went
- 11:42for the role? Of the 8th Doctor.
- 11:45Though, well, I mean. Peter Capaldi, I think went for
- 11:47it. Yeah.
- 11:48Whatever happened to him? I mean, it's a whole.
- 11:50It's a whole saga, the. You know who Philip Siegel wants
- 11:54it? Who?
- 11:55Oh, my God. That fella from Game of Thrones.
- 11:59Ian. Ian.
- 12:00I can't remember his name now. Oh, it's all gone to part now.
- 12:03The DVD hasn't played. Yeah, Cunningham, I don't know
- 12:09who that is. It was in Cold War.
- 12:12He wanted him, I know. Who that is?
- 12:13No, but it's funny isn't it? All of those 90s rumours.
- 12:18You know Steven Spielberg's got Doctor Who this Nicola.
- 12:20Bride's playing Catherine Janeway and.
- 12:22Then he's random. I don't know what's it.
- 12:24Caroline Monroe was the all of those sort of 90s rumours, all
- 12:28sort of culminating. And it's funny, actually,
- 12:31because. It seemed to come out of
- 12:34nowhere. I mean, we didn't really have
- 12:35the Internet then, did we? Or or anything like that.
- 12:38All we had was like sort of Gallifrey Guardian in Doctor Who
- 12:41Magazine. But I remember when Paul McGann,
- 12:43like it seemed to happen very quickly.
- 12:45I thought the first I heard of it was the Radio Times.
- 12:48There's a little picture of Paul McGann in the corner and it just
- 12:52said the new Doctor Who, Paul McGann.
- 12:55And then we'll be, we'll be filming in, you know, a few
- 12:59months. And it seemed was your reaction
- 13:00like that was like the January or February of 96 and then
- 13:03suddenly May 96, the film's there.
- 13:06I wasn't impressed to begin with because, I mean, there was this
- 13:10like sort of Skinhead guy. He wasn't sort of your typical
- 13:14idea of who the Doctor is. I mean, nowadays.
- 13:17Go, go, try, press play. You ready for?
- 13:19This OK, here we go. I'll, I'll carry on in a second
- 13:22Do. You know, all I do remember is
- 13:23DWM was so starved for new content.
- 13:26Do you remember how every rumor would be in Gallifrey Guardian?
- 13:28And then finally, they had something to talk about.
- 13:30And then he was on the front of Doctor Who magazine with that
- 13:33crystal. I think it was at the Longley
- 13:34exhibition with his shape. And I'm looking through, I was
- 13:37thinking, who is this guy? It it, it always takes a minute
- 13:41or two just to sort of digest who this person is.
- 13:43And then and then immediately he's the Doctor after that.
- 13:45All this always happens with any new Doctor.
- 13:48You just like what? And then you're like, OK here,
- 13:50right? If we want, let's.
- 13:52Go I hope we don't have copyright violations this time.
- 13:54I'm going to press play in 54321.
- 14:01Throughout the power. Please play.
- 14:05For fuck's sake, please play oh. Here we go.
- 14:09He's on the planet. Scarrow, everyone on.
- 14:12The planet Scarrow. Very unusual beginning.
- 14:14This was like the. CGI doesn't look great.
- 14:17Turn it down a little bit, I don't.
- 14:18Know everyone hearing no, no, I've no, I want it.
- 14:21I want the sound on. It's a bit of a nympho dump
- 14:24looking back now. And this bit of a nympho dump?
- 14:27Are you fucking kidding me? At the time this.
- 14:29Is like reading out the program. Guide as a 10 year old, you're
- 14:32like, wow, this is amazing. All this stuff I can see sort of
- 14:35as an adult. As a newer viewer, you might be
- 14:38like OK. Like what is this actually
- 14:40relevant? This is the one of two things I
- 14:43did want to turn up the sound for.
- 14:44So Are you ready? It's our favorite.
- 14:46You ready here? We go, here's the music.
- 14:49You can sing with me, right? I mean.
- 14:55It's a wonderful. It's.
- 15:00Always weird when it goes backwards.
- 15:01I'm like, does it have to go backwards?
- 15:03Because that really annoys me. There.
- 15:08We go. I mean.
- 15:11We've all heard this. Let's turn it down.
- 15:12A little turn. It down until I get to the
- 15:14piano. Very similar to the new series
- 15:22Christopher Eckerson series with the the font and the time
- 15:26tunnels. I'll tell you what, there's so
- 15:27much to inform us a little bit there, isn't there?
- 15:29Sylvester McCoy. Oh, my God.
- 15:31OK, turn it down now, because I want to tell you right when I
- 15:34was watching the documentary earlier.
- 15:36What are you doing? I wasn't sound on this Aiden was
- 15:42Sylvester McCoy, the BBC, the sort of woman who was in charge
- 15:46of the BBC, and Joe Joe Wiley. No, not Joe Wiley.
- 15:50She presents Radio One. Joe Castleton, Joe Somebody,
- 15:54Yeah, she said that because Sylvester war era was so
- 15:58unpopular, they thought what are they doing?
- 16:00We don't want to associate this with Doctor Who is least
- 16:02popular. It's a good.
- 16:03Do you think it's a good thing that you said this or not
- 16:05because? It denies us Paul McGann, but
- 16:08it's great to see Sylvester McCoy back as a fan.
- 16:12I think then it doesn't really service the plot for a new view.
- 16:14Creatively, it is a stupid idea to start this thing with a
- 16:18doctor that we're not seeing. And you see him in that sort of
- 16:21distorted in the mirror to begin with.
- 16:22You're like, what's happened to Sylvester.
- 16:24No, but all. Of a sudden it's a bit crazy.
- 16:26So, acting lessons. He's not going.
- 16:30Actually, he does do a bit of that, doesn't he?
- 16:31A. Little bit, yeah.
- 16:32He's very serene now you've got to think this is that sort of
- 16:35latter day, new adventure stroke, Big finish.
- 16:39Beautiful. It looks amazing this.
- 16:40This tardy. But yeah, but so you don't think
- 16:43Service McCoy should have been really in this creatively?
- 16:46Well, creatively, no. As a fan, yes, I'll please.
- 16:49We see the regeneration, but it was a stupid idea to put him in
- 16:54this. I mean they could have cut it
- 16:56down a little bit or I've, I think I can't remember where I
- 16:59read it or so it could have been like a flashback a bit later on
- 17:02they could have brought him back and.
- 17:03Do you think that row should have started with Paul McCann as
- 17:05the Doctor turning into Chris Rexon?
- 17:07I mean, I'm not going to say no to any Paul McCann, but.
- 17:09It is silly. It wouldn't have worked, would
- 17:12it? I mean, they could have had ACE
- 17:13in this as well, you know. Do you know what I mean?
- 17:16Jesus. Christ, the way to bring this
- 17:18down. Bring Sophie Aldrin in.
- 17:20Yeah, Professor, why you got that creepy guy's remains in
- 17:23there? All right, it's the master
- 17:26always reading The Time Machine, and they're trying to be very.
- 17:29Cute in the diary and all of that.
- 17:31I suppose It's but it still really was for the fans, wasn't
- 17:35it? But then.
- 17:37Do you know if you do a drinking game with this and you drink
- 17:39every time time is mentioned? You're drunk within 2 1/2
- 17:43minutes. The poor.
- 17:45Woman, I think you have to get used to the TARDIS being so
- 17:49massive and it is on all these handles.
- 17:53It's a shame we don't really get to see there's so much detail
- 17:55back there. Well, we sort of explore it
- 17:57later, Chang Lee and the Master. We don't see it enough, but.
- 18:02Oh, oh. Very symbolic.
- 18:04Jeffrey Sachs is a very symbolic guy.
- 18:07I think this is one of the best directed Doctor Who stories
- 18:09ever. I mean it's very energetic.
- 18:12It like it's furious. They really did want to make an
- 18:15impact with how this looked, but visually, I mean look at that
- 18:18high angle shot of the TARDIS console with the Snake Master
- 18:23slivering underneath it. But you do.
- 18:25I do feel like you have, you know, your casual viewer is a
- 18:28bit like even after these few minutes you're like.
- 18:31Scary master. This is happening, this is
- 18:33happening, and then you're like, it's a bit exhausting, isn't it?
- 18:37Oh, it's. It's ridiculous.
- 18:39You will never do this now. It is utterly ridiculous to
- 18:43begin with. This much of a catch up of the
- 18:45last sort of what is? It. 3540 years of Doctor Who.
- 18:50But it's what been 6-7 years? You realise what this did as
- 18:53well, don't you? Cancel the Dark Dimension.
- 18:57So what are you really going to do now?
- 18:58There was five weeks of post production of the Doctor
- 19:01mentioned. Why is he putting the master at
- 19:02a shrine? Why does it have to be at a
- 19:04shrine with all these candles and stuff?
- 19:06I. Understand that.
- 19:07I think if you pull this apart, you'll be saying why quite a
- 19:10lot. OK.
- 19:11Why? Just because it's got a lot of
- 19:12make up on there. Do they shoot the Doctor when he
- 19:14walks outside the TARDIS, I mean.
- 19:17And we're back on Earth. Here we go.
- 19:19Go. I let this transitioned into the
- 19:21fish's eye. There's a lot of these, yeah.
- 19:25It's definitely got a stamp of a director that's really thought
- 19:29about, you know, it's not just done as, I mean even this, you
- 19:34know this. Kind of out the window, down
- 19:36into the street. That's what I'll say.
- 19:37That's a street. No, from the set there down, I
- 19:41mean it's. It is gorgeous.
- 19:45Look, this is how I always imagine America.
- 19:47To be in the. Evening Smokey Backstreet.
- 19:49Yeah, yeah, but it's very 90s. It's very X-Files.
- 19:52Like, where's it supposed to be? Los Angeles.
- 19:54San Francisco, it literally just said on the screen.
- 19:55In front of you. But yeah, but it's Vancouver
- 19:58isn't. It, but no the film they're
- 19:59making in Vancouver. Yeah, like The X-Files.
- 20:01It's because there's many other. Shows, but this is.
- 20:04But then as a kid you're like, this is cool Doctor Who.
- 20:08This is what you want Doctor Who?
- 20:09To be like gangs, Like gums. Hey, come here, man.
- 20:15Yeah. This is like, Oh my God, what?
- 20:16This is like we said about the dialogue, right.
- 20:18But remember when you and me read the entire script on the TV
- 20:22movie in the hotel in Didcot, the place of the Android
- 20:25invasion, we came to the conclusion.
- 20:27Actually, most of the script was script directions.
- 20:30Yeah. Matthew Jacobs, you script on
- 20:32the dialogue. Hey, come here, man.
- 20:37Oh, and can I just say a word for the music in this fucking
- 20:41one of our best scores ever? Listen.
- 20:47To this, he's doing a proper orchestral score for Doctor Who.
- 20:52Who is it? John Dibney?
- 20:55And he also did two episodes of Star Trek D Space 9, you know.
- 21:01So are we watching the I Feel Unedited version?
- 21:03I was like because there's no this is the full version, this
- 21:06is. So you get to see that zoom in
- 21:07on the Hifi system as the Doctor dies.
- 21:10But this motion was. It some of this gun stuff was
- 21:12that edited. It wasn't the BBC One, but not
- 21:14in the. BBC version?
- 21:15This is the full version, yeah, because look, in the BBC version
- 21:19you didn't see all that ba ba, ba ba ba.
- 21:20And the second against the TARDIS, it looks great as well.
- 21:24Why is there an enormous backdrop of Buckingham Palace
- 21:27there? Again, they've thought about it,
- 21:29of course, because Doctor Who's from?
- 21:31Written and It's just a nice touch, isn't it?
- 21:33There's a lot of these nice touches.
- 21:35OK, well I feel like this is an appropriate moment to talk about
- 21:40the 7th Doctors demise. Is it worthy I mean.
- 21:44Malfunction. It's after all of this, you
- 21:47know, master manipulator, all those years, it's done all the
- 21:50new adventures. There's something in that and he
- 21:52just gets shot down random. There is something about the
- 21:54random death I really like though.
- 21:57Like, you know, he's he's been the master of 1000 games.
- 22:00You know, he's been playing all these arch villains at their own
- 22:03game and all of a sudden he's taken down.
- 22:05By a bullet of a gang member in San Francisco.
- 22:08I love his outfit here. They didn't go with the question
- 22:12marks, yeah. No, I think this is one of his
- 22:15best performances in Doctor Who it.
- 22:17Doesn't do very much. Yep, that's saying a lot there.
- 22:21Take you have a look. All the feathers are sort of
- 22:24flying down around the lighting. Oh my God, it's the cup, master.
- 22:28It's dripping out the thing, Yeah, I've got to say.
- 22:31Sorry man. But I do you think I?
- 22:33Think we haven't got to the master yet, but do you think
- 22:35having the master as the main? Villain in the first one is a
- 22:38bit too Do you think it could have been we should have an
- 22:41alien of some kind to sort of show what the show can do Series
- 22:44of weird choices that they made there.
- 22:47There is too much back. Story.
- 22:48I can understand why it's the master.
- 22:50Look at Look at that CGI shot on the puddle turning into the
- 22:53snake. Still pretty good.
- 22:54I think that looks great. But do you think they should
- 22:58have gone for a more alien style?
- 23:00Just random invasion. I just don't think they should
- 23:03have told this story. They.
- 23:03Couldn't have done it on the But you know what?
- 23:05The fact that they did tell the story, and it is as mercilessly
- 23:08entertaining as it is, I'm very pleased it exist.
- 23:11Oh my God, you're Bruce. It's Eric Roberts making his
- 23:14first appearance, signing up. We can't do nothing.
- 23:19So was it December 31st? 1999 when Mark and I say we
- 23:27could quote this entire movie, we love it.
- 23:30We are not exaggerating. OK, now this in a minute.
- 23:34All these things in ambulance and things like this.
- 23:36There's an X-Files episode called Leonard Betts shot around
- 23:40the same time. It looks exactly like this.
- 23:43I swear it's the same ambulance. It's the same hospital.
- 23:48Oh yeah, 5 million. This other budget off And do
- 23:52you? I do think you can see it.
- 23:54Oh, well, yeah, absolutely. We're about to be introduced to
- 23:58the star of the show. And I'm not talking about Daphne
- 24:01Ashbrook. It's Curtis.
- 24:02It's Curtis, the nurse, everybody.
- 24:05It's Brian. Sometimes I do feel that some of
- 24:09these really slow tracking shots.
- 24:12Where you see the the snake, it's a little, it slows down the
- 24:15action a little bit. I know it is suspenseful, but
- 24:18oh, I could have done without that since the Best of McCoy
- 24:21shirt. Open.
- 24:23And these are the days is he are quite high.
- 24:25High up in in ratings. There's no way.
- 24:27McCoy is smooth. McCoy is hairy.
- 24:31They've shaved him. They've shaved him.
- 24:34I swear. I know, I know.
- 24:36I know what you mean. He's all a bit ponderous, but he
- 24:38does shoot this habit. That's in really great ways, I
- 24:41think. A.
- 24:43Double exposure. All this double exposure, he has
- 24:49two hearts. I mean, you've Hawking back a
- 24:51little bit to Spirit from Space here, aren't you?
- 24:53With the, they're going back to the same, well, you know.
- 24:55They're going back to that same sort of situation.
- 25:00I would have liked to be some, I don't know, an alien in the in
- 25:04the hospital or something like that.
- 25:05Some autony type thing. He's an alien hospital.
- 25:07The Doctor. Yeah, I suppose.
- 25:10I suppose I see what you mean now.
- 25:12Yeah, this is a bit too. Like now the third one, I just
- 25:14feel like they could have just we get that point.
- 25:17The snakes in the fucking ambulance.
- 25:19I. Would criticize that it's just a
- 25:21little bit too much, but it's probably.
- 25:22I've watched this so many times. Anyone know it so well?
- 25:25Possibly say about that vehicle? This is an ambulance.
- 25:33Oh, McCoy does a brilliant accident a bit when he dies,
- 25:36doesn't it? Oh.
- 25:37Traumatic. He's very traumatic.
- 25:39Oh my God, here we go. Amazing.
- 25:41Grace. Oh my God.
- 25:49Come on, Explain what a goddess that is.
- 25:52Brilliant, isn't she? And she stayed a great.
- 25:55Ambassador for Doctor Who as well.
- 25:56Throughout all these years of conventions and things.
- 25:59I absolutely thoroughly recommend her biography, Dead
- 26:02Woman Laughing. That goes throughout her whole
- 26:04career and her daughter Peyton. And her daughter, Peyton, Peyton
- 26:08and I, actually, she has had a bit of a life after Doctor Who.
- 26:12She's been in some Big Finish audios as other characters.
- 26:15I mean she did other stuff. She was, she's only by she, you
- 26:18know, she's been in Murder She Wrote.
- 26:20She did a couple of episodes of that.
- 26:21She did the odd, you know, an episode she was in The OC.
- 26:24She was Melora. And Star Trek, Yeah, she's Star
- 26:26Trek. So she's, you know, quite a A
- 26:28Joffing actress here she's effectively Carolyn in vampire
- 26:31science. She does.
- 26:33She does a ton of comic strips, Paul McCann comic strips, and
- 26:36you're talking about. Grace, I'm talking about Daphne
- 26:38Ashbrook. Well, of course purposes.
- 26:39Here they are one. Oh, wait, they are one.
- 26:42Brian, I'm on call. No.
- 26:45Don't. Sort of levity of this.
- 26:48And we love Curtis because she goes she's.
- 26:50Setting her up for as a perfect Doctor Who companion this every
- 26:53day. Oh my God, this is happening.
- 26:55Oh my God. And then she's drawn into this
- 26:57world. Hold up, hold up.
- 26:59I really love race for a second. In In terms of character
- 27:02shorthand, yeah, so we've seen her at the theatre, so she's
- 27:05clearly cultured, sort of middle, upper class.
- 27:09But she's also a bit quirky because she goes to work in her
- 27:11opera dress. She's a doctor on call.
- 27:13She's got a board like we've only known her for about 2 1/2
- 27:17minutes and we already basically know her entire back story.
- 27:19It's really well done. Puccini.
- 27:22This is a bit, yeah, grim. With the the Doctor waking up.
- 27:25I think this is where the 12th certificate came in.
- 27:28I'm not human, Mark. I'm not like your timing
- 27:31malfunction. The master, he's out there.
- 27:37I don't understand why there's all these dramatic shots of.
- 27:40Growth. Oh my God.
- 27:40And the bit with the guys looking over.
- 27:42And just so. We we know your money's being
- 27:45well spent, we'll blasted with lasers.
- 27:47Oh, I. Mean.
- 27:50It's not really necessary all of that stuff, but it just.
- 27:52Adds to the the drama of the whole situation.
- 27:55Doesn't think about an hour or 15 minutes of this is not
- 27:58necessary. Now we've watched a lot of
- 27:59Grey's Anatomy. We sort of understand this
- 28:01because they have got that viewing platform of the bit.
- 28:04Well, Grey's, yeah, but you shy away from all those operations.
- 28:07Oh, my God. I mean you can't handle.
- 28:08It that bit, you know where you see all the insides of him on
- 28:10the TV screen here. Oh my God, I can't watch that
- 28:13bit. All that blue bit, all the probe
- 28:15gets snapped off inside it, didn't it?
- 28:17I've never had a probe snapped off inside me before.
- 28:21Oh oh, all of these directorial shots from the Doctor's point of
- 28:24view. Those were Sylvester Mccoy's
- 28:26idea, he said to Jeffrey Sachs. Wait, if you want Paul McGann to
- 28:31recognise her, I should. You should see through my eyes
- 28:34seeing her. So then when he wakes up, he
- 28:37remembers her McCoy still coming up with ideas.
- 28:42Don't know. We're probably on the set of the
- 28:44classic series. McCoy was like, why don't we try
- 28:46this? I.
- 28:46Mean listening? Get his spoons out here and
- 28:48stuff. You know, he could play them on
- 28:49Daphne Ashbrook. 'S top playing scalpels or
- 28:52something instead? Yeah, And can I just say,
- 28:54please, everybody, check out the Long Island Doctor Who
- 28:57Convention, which Daphne Ashbrook is often at.
- 29:00It's just great that she's still involved and it's a shame that
- 29:03she can't come back and play Grace for Big Finish.
- 29:06I don't know if those rights aren't a problem anymore now
- 29:09that Disney are involved. I'll tell you what, I genuinely
- 29:12think her performance in this is one of the best things about it,
- 29:16and I think her character is just brilliantly paired with
- 29:19Paul Mcgann's doctor. I mean, I don't remember back.
- 29:22I wasn't really sort of in the the conversation, the fandom
- 29:25conversations and such. Was there a sort of resistance
- 29:28like, oh, this has all been Americanized?
- 29:30Yeah, totally, totally. Do you think that's an issue
- 29:32here? It went one or two ways.
- 29:34You had the terrorist sticks reaction where he went to the
- 29:37premiere and went it's incoherent crap and you or you
- 29:41have the Kate Ormond reaction, which was basically she flicked
- 29:44herself off every time she thought about it because this
- 29:47was the most romantic Doctor Who had ever been.
- 29:49I think it's. I don't have a problem with it
- 29:51and I didn't at the time. What is that dramatic close up
- 29:54of the Wi-Fi all about? Yeah.
- 29:56And McCoy goes, that's. A horrible image that really is
- 30:01and his slow motion death. I'm going to switch over to Desi
- 30:04Connor after that. This is the most protracted
- 30:06death, I think. Yeah, it goes on a long time.
- 30:09I think about when Jon Pertwee died.
- 30:10It's very quick. Not it's not.
- 30:16I thought we dropped her. I mean the first Doctor.
- 30:20Mark, I want to see his X-rays. Now he.
- 30:24Does go on a bit longer, but you need to have that drama, you
- 30:26need to show that because if it's a new viewer, you need to
- 30:29show that he has died. And that whatever's going to
- 30:32happen happened. But I cannot believe she's still
- 30:34in her opera dress. And after that?
- 30:36Grace's story from now on, we like her.
- 30:39Do we like her? Absolutely.
- 30:41I. Love her is.
- 30:42She, I mean, she's definitely in that list of companions for me.
- 30:46She's not left out. People shouldn't leave.
- 30:47Don't leave Grace out if you're doing a list of companions.
- 30:50Dr. Jesus Christ though. She's one of those I know, I
- 30:53know. She breaks that rule.
- 30:54She made it in that book, didn't she?
- 30:55The women of Doctor Who book. She didn't travel in the TARDIS
- 30:57from story to story, which is usually the rule, but neither
- 30:59did Lis. Sure, she's the Lis.
- 31:01Sure of the 90s, That's right. Although if we had had a season
- 31:05of Grace Holloway Adventures. Oh my God, it would be.
- 31:07Well, would you have Chan Lee? What do you think of Chan Lee
- 31:11here? Because this is where their
- 31:12first OK Mark and I have said very mean things about Yuji So's
- 31:16performances elsewhere in. Doctor Who?
- 31:18Oh, in Big Finish. He hasn't.
- 31:20I think, I think he's brilliant in there.
- 31:22He's very naturalistic in this. He's very charming.
- 31:24I mean, I think sometimes his character is not written so well
- 31:27because no, the Emory goes, you lied to me.
- 31:30It's like, did he? I don't know.
- 31:33You don't know this man at all, do you?
- 31:34At the end, yeah, I do. See you later, Grace.
- 31:41Her tits look amazing in that dress, don't they?
- 31:44Beautiful. There she goes.
- 31:45Oh, proper. Wait, wait.
- 31:47There as well. Look at this.
- 31:48The transition into the corridor.
- 31:50This is all this direction is so American, isn't it?
- 31:53I love it. Oh, no.
- 31:55That man must have got all those cups of coffee.
- 31:57He's just gone straight through them all.
- 31:59This reminds me of the sequence in Star Trek 4.
- 32:02You know when they're going around the hospital.
- 32:04No. Yeah.
- 32:04Dialysis. You know, I I'm Karen.
- 32:06I'm Karen. That bit.
- 32:08The only other thing I've seen each, and so in is the first
- 32:11pilot episode of Sliders. He plays Quinn's friend at the
- 32:15beginning. I think he turns up in a couple
- 32:17of alternative in that first series of Sliders.
- 32:19Now Mark can, Oh my God, identify with Bruce's wife now
- 32:26because I believe his partner snores a.
- 32:28Little Oh my God, is it Eliza? Roberts that this is a married
- 32:32couple, the married couple of Doctor.
- 32:34Couple very rare. Not every Doctor Who story has
- 32:37it killed his own wife on screen.
- 32:39And they this is the sound of her neck snapping that I think
- 32:42the BBC edited out. Is it in here?
- 32:44Now it. Might be in this come back to
- 32:46bed honey. I now look we do weren't soaking
- 32:49on the all the ambulance stuff. I do like the snake going around
- 32:51his bedroom though, because the idea I.
- 32:53Think this tracking shot is just a little bit slow again, because
- 32:56we've seen this what, 3-4 times reading the ambulance?
- 32:58And now again, excuse me, can I say something?
- 33:01You were literally petrified with a spider in the bedroom
- 33:04this morning. If this snake was slipping
- 33:07around, you'd be terrified. Oh, that is great.
- 33:11Oh, I don't. No, I don't really like looking
- 33:14at fate. So the fact that we're seeing
- 33:16Mccoy's scabby feet right into the camera there is a bit oh,
- 33:19what do you think about this fella doing anything special?
- 33:22New Year's Eve? A.
- 33:24Great comedy side character. Is there anything special New
- 33:26Year's Eve go to the costume party?
- 33:29Oh, where you going? As.
- 33:31Wow. Who's that?
- 33:35Oh, it's 731st 1999. Party on, we've got a sweet
- 33:40Sure, we'll wrap for you. This basically is just so
- 33:46squeered and quoted. Mark, do you think he's going to
- 33:52go to a better hospital? And here we go into the mall.
- 33:57Why don't you go to another hospital and find some more mind
- 34:00ordering drugs? I mean, I suppose it's not this
- 34:02is it's not really a family show, is it?
- 34:05For you. What do you mean sit down?
- 34:07You know Doctor Who's but only like, whereas Rose was like sit
- 34:10down with the family and watch what do you?
- 34:11Think this is too scary? Bit old adult doesn't feel as
- 34:14that. Well, Rose feels kiddier.
- 34:16You know you got the. You've got the plastic bin in
- 34:18rows and here you've got a Morgan.
- 34:20Oh, I see. What, you're saying you know an
- 34:22operation of Sylvester McCoy, haven't you?
- 34:24So, but it's still a bit comic book.
- 34:26I mean, it's a big, it is Cartoon Snake is about to go
- 34:29down his throat, but. You get those, You get a few.
- 34:32Oh God, have you ever gagged on a snake like that?
- 34:36I believe you have. Sorry, what you're saying?
- 34:40As I say in like an X-Files episode or something, you still
- 34:43have some of those comedy games. It's more The X-Files audience,
- 34:46I feel. Oh yeah, this is what they go.
- 34:48But it's not your family. Because it was.
- 34:51The interesting thing is this we're.
- 34:52Not really. Launching.
- 34:53It's not really like to give it this context for a second this
- 34:57there was an entire committee of people.
- 34:59Coming in putting this, there was the American side and there
- 35:02was the British side, and they couldn't, apparently they just
- 35:04hashed it out and they couldn't make any choices, which is why I
- 35:07think you've got all the Americanisms in it and you've
- 35:10got all the Britishisms in it, but I think it makes an
- 35:13intoxicating brew. I mean, for all the people
- 35:15involved in the script and what can and can't go in, I'm
- 35:19surprised we got. Not as a good a product as we
- 35:21got. Indeed.
- 35:23You know, well, I think, I think by committee there's if there
- 35:26was somebody a bit more creative, that was like, right,
- 35:29this is how we're going to. I think 3 reasons.
- 35:31Can I tell you why I still think this is so good, despite the
- 35:34fact that the script is all over the place.
- 35:36One is Matthew Jacobs writes fantastically funny dialogue.
- 35:43So this is very, very quotable story too.
- 35:45They cast it brilliantly and the actors bring a lot to the
- 35:48screen. And three, Jeffrey Sachs just
- 35:50directs the hell out of it. So as an experience of watching
- 35:53a piece of television, it's glorious.
- 35:57Here we have the regeneration. Yeah, look at regeneration with
- 36:00the with festival is perfect for his guns.
- 36:02Paul McCann looks a bit embarrassed.
- 36:05Doesn't not want to do any gun in here.
- 36:06I am just going to look as if I've just chewed on a caramel
- 36:09toffee. And the and the intercutting
- 36:11with the original Frankenstein genius, isn't it?
- 36:15Here he is. He's alive.
- 36:18He is or isn't he handsome? So he came back at night at the
- 36:23doctor. He didn't look any different
- 36:25here. We go, he looks a bit waxwork
- 36:27there. When he sits up, I just How do
- 36:30you? Think this ranks in terms of
- 36:32regenerations so far. What the actual regeneration or
- 36:36as a first story for his doctor? How the regeneration is Oh, it's
- 36:39one of the best. It's one of the most over
- 36:42directed regenerations. It's up there with case of
- 36:44Andras Hardy four as being over directed.
- 36:47But in I feel like the regeneration should be over
- 36:50directed. They're big.
- 36:51Moments. Yeah, he's a big moment.
- 36:53I'm sure we got this super strength from though to break
- 36:55down this more. Door.
- 36:56Oh, it's leftover regeneration energy.
- 36:58Obviously they don't state that they do like, and actually we
- 37:02haven't got the fairy dust yet, have we?
- 37:04So that comes with the new series.
- 37:06And then we have this Jesus image, don't we?
- 37:09I believe that Marie Gold may have been paying attention to TV
- 37:12movie. And you know, the bit where he
- 37:14goes, Oh my God, Marigold was like all comedy music.
- 37:18I'll put some of that in Doctor Who.
- 37:21Oh, here he comes. It's Jesus.
- 37:25I mean, if Jesus did emerge the second comment, he looked like
- 37:28that. Everyone would want to fuck him,
- 37:30wouldn't I? Sorry to any religious people
- 37:34listening. And then we have then we have a
- 37:38bit too long of Paul McGann wondering will you stop saying
- 37:41everything too long do you like? This.
- 37:44No, I do. I just want him to be the doctor
- 37:46straight away and the you know ohh and can you explain to me
- 37:49what's occurring in a minute when he goes into that room and.
- 37:52That's what I was going to say. This always can smash windows.
- 37:55He's walking down this corridor. It's I think it's explained in
- 37:57the script and the novel shot of him walking down the corridor.
- 38:00It's one of the best corridor scenes.
- 38:02It's the direction of that is beautiful.
- 38:05But first, watching this, there's no explanation of why.
- 38:10Yeah, it's this abandoned part of the hospital scary, Russell's
- 38:14novel explained there. I think there's a line or two
- 38:16and it might be in the script as well.
- 38:17It's just a it just wants us to an abandoned part.
- 38:20But. I mean for dramatic effect,
- 38:22there's all equipment in there though getting wet.
- 38:25Leave it like this. They wouldn't leave like a wing
- 38:27of this whole damaged equipment and we didn't even hear there
- 38:30was going to be a storm. Yeah, it just sort of came out.
- 38:34Comes out of nowhere. When he arrived in the hospital,
- 38:36there wasn't a storm was. There.
- 38:37All these like flowers that don't look too old, I believe.
- 38:41What is what they you're not? Going to leave this all leaking
- 38:43out all over the place, are you? I believe it is what they call a
- 38:45Miz on scene I They're just making a dramatic statement.
- 38:49Visually, they are, you know they.
- 38:51Are but it just. Confused me.
- 38:52I was like, I need to know why this is happening.
- 38:55People say that Jesus Doctor came during Rusty Davis's time,
- 38:57but it's nonsense, serious. But here he can explore.
- 39:02Explore himself in the mirror. That doesn't sound right.
- 39:04Explore himself in the mirror on his own, without people.
- 39:06Around Explore yourself in the mirror.
- 39:09Love you. But at least he can see and then
- 39:13be like who am I to himself without anybody?
- 39:16Look at his tits. Oh my God.
- 39:18We need more of this, don't we? Do you know what I love about?
- 39:20Do you know what I love about how Ethan says this?
- 39:24Oh, wait. Oh, Master.
- 39:25Doctor. Master.
- 39:27Doctor. Minds touch.
- 39:29That's right. And Masters got all come round
- 39:32his mouth. Yeah, it's been sucking off
- 39:36Chang Li. Look.
- 39:36Mrs. Bruce is just asleep this whole time.
- 39:42Oh, I love the music here. But then it goes into that
- 39:53grace. She's been there all night.
- 39:55Yeah. Grace has been off the screen
- 39:56for too long now. You know when Paul McGann said
- 39:59that line? Who am I?
- 40:00Yeah, The way he breaks his voice again, you can tell he's a
- 40:02Shakespearean actor. He goes, who?
- 40:04Oh, what's this all about? Tom Baker scarf.
- 40:12Have to have a Tom Baker scarf reference in anything Doctor Who
- 40:16since Tom Baker left. Look at this the fades to Chang
- 40:20Li back to the. Doctor, I'd love to see the
- 40:22TARDIS key is as the perch for years, which is nice, and you've
- 40:26got the yo-yo. Yeah, as well, I've got to say,
- 40:29right, I do think the 1st 15 minutes of the film are is a
- 40:32massive mistake. Yeah, I love how I do love it.
- 40:34I know, I know. From this point on to the end of
- 40:37the movie, I just think it's absolutely perfect.
- 40:40Is that Philip Seago in The Locker?
- 40:43That picture Ian Levine I love. That picture.
- 40:45That's a picture. It's just a fat man.
- 40:48I don't know who it is. Seagull.
- 40:49I could always say seagull what? Was that mask?
- 40:51Was that Richard Nixon? I think so.
- 40:53Yeah, I. Love this music.
- 40:55Yeah. Oh, and this.
- 40:58So the outfit for this doctor. Yeah, perfect is.
- 41:01This is not leaning into the past a bit though.
- 41:03It wouldn't have been a velvet frock cone cravat.
- 41:06Got that vision of Russell T Davis?
- 41:08Of how it could be? This is what people think of
- 41:11Doctor Who think of a scarf wearer at this point.
- 41:15I think this is bringing it on. I mean it's not a question mark
- 41:19pullover is it? This, I think it's that
- 41:21Edwardian, Bohemian type character, which is that is what
- 41:25Doctor Who was at. This time, I think he manages to
- 41:28stride the line between classic IES Get up and knew the romantic
- 41:32doctor. It's that perfect bridging
- 41:34point. But then if Paul McGann oh, this
- 41:38is my favorite scene, come back to bed, honey.
- 41:40Excuse me? My name is not honey.
- 41:43This is the bit where emergencies partner.
- 41:46Master will do. Come back to bed then, master,
- 41:50we used to play. We used to recreate that scene
- 41:52in primary school. After we watched this, we used
- 41:55to. We used to play this.
- 41:57This is your favorite scene that emerges?
- 42:00Me and my friend at school. We used to reenact this, I bet.
- 42:04You did? I bet you did back in prime.
- 42:06My skull come back to bed, honey.
- 42:08Do you not think that's a good shot though, the green eyes?
- 42:11He snaps her neck. Don't snap my neck, please.
- 42:15But sorry, what? Just going back to Paul McGann,
- 42:17imagine if he had his short hair, which I think he wanted.
- 42:22It wouldn't suit him in that outfit, would it?
- 42:25I've said it's because I just eat on all of those covers of
- 42:28those books and big finishes. I'm so used to seeing him like
- 42:31that when he came back in. Not at the doctor.
- 42:33Well, not at the doctor he's got.
- 42:35He's the new big finish. He's got a little bit of a curl
- 42:37around the side. Oh, here we go.
- 42:39I feel that Grace has a relationship with everybody in
- 42:41this hospital. Curtis the fat man in the
- 42:43Mortuary one She's a. Hi, Dick, isn't she?
- 42:46Mark, stop by psychiatric to pick up some more mind honouring
- 42:49drugs for you. Oh, I love her.
- 42:52I absolutely love her. Oh, in a minute, right.
- 42:56There's a bit with Paul McGann sitting there in the waiting
- 43:00room. There's a massive close up on
- 43:01this man's face with a huge nose.
- 43:03It's his point of view, isn't it?
- 43:05He's. A little weird.
- 43:06I'm so sorry for the man. They make him look very ugly.
- 43:08Looks a bit like Patrick Moore I.
- 43:09Think. Look.
- 43:10Wait for it. Oh.
- 43:11My. God, Oh my God, Body Snatchers.
- 43:16But this is very much again, Grey's Anatomy, isn't it?
- 43:19Mark, didn't you hear? So I ran out for the body last
- 43:21night. I mean that outfit.
- 43:24All the cravat, all that velvet. In terms of editing, do you
- 43:29think this is the best Doctor Who story?
- 43:31Because there's so much editing in this, they cut in scenes.
- 43:35Yeah? In the climax it edits from
- 43:36scene to scene to scene. Furiously, it probably is the
- 43:39most, isn't it? But I think it's still sorry
- 43:42Terrance manages to be coherent. Yeah, I don't know what he's
- 43:45talking about. Time.
- 43:48Time so dramatic. Now, what is all this scene
- 43:55about with her boss? Well, it's, I mean, she's trying
- 44:01to say he's trying to cover up that whatever happened, you
- 44:04know, this alien, all this double exposure thing isn't and
- 44:07he wants to get rid of the evidence.
- 44:08So he thinks that she made mistakes?
- 44:10Yeah, yeah. Well, if you do this, Mark, I'll
- 44:13quit. But it's this is here to show
- 44:15Grace's. She's a woman of integrity, of a
- 44:18companion. She's not going to, you know,
- 44:20Liz Shaw wouldn't have any of this.
- 44:22Liz Shaw would fight for this. Wouldn't.
- 44:24She No. Yeah, absolutely.
- 44:26Yeah. I think she'd be snogging Jon
- 44:28Pertwee, though. Up against a tree.
- 44:32Liz, the Sky with Dancing with Colour.
- 44:35I know who I am little. Green men with blue heads come.
- 44:40Here then you haven't. Shaved your brow last.
- 44:49Where were we, the youth? Madam fits perfectly.
- 44:54The boy, Liz, you're going to do great things.
- 44:59I'll see that I'll quit. I can see Doctor Melora Paul
- 45:03Winner there setting her up to go off on Adventures in Time and
- 45:06Space. And she doesn't.
- 45:07At the end, she's getting getting rid of her old life.
- 45:10She's fed up with being a doctor.
- 45:11She's getting rid of her boyfriend, She's ready to go out
- 45:13into the stars. She.
- 45:14Knows who she is. That's enough.
- 45:18No, this is. I think she should have got.
- 45:20Two boxes worth Is that all she's got is her work stuff and
- 45:23her dress from last night. OK, Oh my God, they're here they
- 45:27are together. He's still got the John Doe tag
- 45:30on his foot. That's that's gorgeous.
- 45:32Doctor Who isn't. It absolutely gorgeous.
- 45:34Imagine if he came up next to you in the lift, Mr. Darcy.
- 45:37Like this Puccini. We've been performs a guy on the
- 45:41lift, he was British. Shit, haven't done a bit liquor?
- 45:47Then she must have thought she scored the best role.
- 45:50I mean, I don't. Think definitely knew much about
- 45:52Doctor Who, I think. She does now.
- 45:53Well, she does now. Of course she does.
- 45:55But at the time, I think she said she didn't really.
- 45:58We do have a close personal connection to Daphne Ashbrook,
- 46:01don't we? I did have a record.
- 46:03A message for you once. Hi.
- 46:05Mark. She was going to.
- 46:09Read. You love poetry, wouldn't she?
- 46:10You can get a copy of her biography or the audio of it.
- 46:14It's, it's absolutely. Wonderful.
- 46:15She basically details the 15 times She almost died on sets.
- 46:19Yeah. And and the 17th died.
- 46:21I almost died on set. Oh, who was horrible to her?
- 46:25Doesn't she look like Scully? She looks so like Julian.
- 46:28Do you think that's the idea? I think that's, yeah, yeah,
- 46:31that's what's in people's minds at the.
- 46:32Time. She's better than the Scully,
- 46:33though. Our Grace Holloway, William.
- 46:35She was up for a part in one of the Star Trek films and William
- 46:38Shatner was horrible to her and treat her.
- 46:40She was. So she was saying, you know,
- 46:42this iconic character, she was going to meet William Shatner
- 46:45and then at the bar he was just. I don't think that's surprising,
- 46:50no. So disappointed.
- 46:51That was Car. The bit where he takes the probe
- 46:53out of his chest, now that's rather undisputable evidence
- 46:59that he is the same man that she put the probe into.
- 47:02Yeah, well, that's why she's driving.
- 47:03She's just getting on. She's like OK.
- 47:05Have you ever seen a probe as big as that?
- 47:07No, I love all these subsidiary characters.
- 47:13Just the fat parked car park in a tender that goes.
- 47:15Hey. Oh, here we go.
- 47:17Here we are, Bruce. Oh, Mr. Terminator.
- 47:21Yeah, this is a total. Terminator Two.
- 47:23What is only what was that 90? I had a bad night that was only
- 47:28a few years before. It's very 90s image, isn't it?
- 47:31Oh, they're leaning into the cultural iconography at this
- 47:34time? Absolutely.
- 47:35Excuse me, What happened for the body they brought in?
- 47:37Bruce, you're sick. Thank you.
- 47:41This is about the amount of effort he thinking now is just.
- 47:45This is the effort he brings to his Big Finish audios.
- 47:48Oh my God, the master big finishes.
- 47:50They are the best. Why don't you let me take off
- 47:52the world? Come on.
- 47:53In terms of credits, he does not stop working, does he?
- 47:57Eric Roberts. He does a lot of he does for TV,
- 48:00movies, anything and everything. You name it, Eric Roberts has
- 48:03done it. But that's all.
- 48:04That's one way to live your life.
- 48:06You wouldn't have these lines now about the Asian child, would
- 48:09you? I don't think so.
- 48:11And the way is Curtis is like, Oh yeah.
- 48:12Excuse me, I I think, Who are all those fat joggers going past
- 48:16their house? It's the very first thing they
- 48:17ever shot, Is it? Yeah, I think this is the first
- 48:21day of. Filming this is the bit where
- 48:22they had to do a dub over when he said he had 13 lives.
- 48:26Isn't it? And the wig and the wig, it's
- 48:28changed, but this is like the third version of his hair.
- 48:30It's it was a bit curlier in the car and earlier on here it's a
- 48:34little bit more finer. It is the wigs just very just
- 48:38changed. Who knows when she walks in and
- 48:40says he's taking all this stuff as if that happens with every
- 48:42boyfriend she has. So far I love her flat though.
- 48:46It's got these two levels. Gorgeous, beautiful views of the
- 48:49park. She's a well paid doctor.
- 48:51I mean, it's just, yeah, she's. I love this.
- 48:54You know they are very small TV though.
- 48:57You know what they are, by the way, into this.
- 48:58Doctors in distress. How big?
- 49:01Those windows. Are oh, imagine the sun coming
- 49:04through there. Recreate this.
- 49:05Have this sort of Doctor Who experience Grace's flat.
- 49:07This little room can we Grace 's flat would be the cafe at the
- 49:10Doctor Who experience. I think that'd be very cool.
- 49:12Yeah. She like, she can't wait to get
- 49:14his his shirt open. Now look, I just think Paul
- 49:19McGann just has it straight away, I mean.
- 49:22But you know what he does? He doesn't assert his
- 49:25masculinity very much in this movie, and yet he's still very
- 49:29dominant and very impressive. You know, he talks in a very
- 49:34soft voice. I've lost.
- 49:36I was. It was so sad, it says about
- 49:41Puccini and Paul McGann from Liverpool.
- 49:46From Liverpool, yes, as per Tom Baker and Little Sladen, other
- 49:49regional doctor. Look at that.
- 49:52They've both got stunning blue eyes, haven't they?
- 49:54Yeah, you have two hearts. One must destroy the
- 50:00regenerative. Oh yeah, we're coming back.
- 50:02That is a line that nobody should ever say.
- 50:03The anaesthetic almost destroyed the regenerative process.
- 50:07But this really, I mean this is cements their relationship here
- 50:11about the bringing back death and all that so beautiful scene.
- 50:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. And this establishes their
- 50:18relationship as well, doesn't it?
- 50:19That he knows who she was when she was younger.
- 50:21He knows that she wanted to do great things.
- 50:23What do you think of that thing? That's the thing throughout,
- 50:25isn't it? Like the Doctor hints that he
- 50:26knows you know with. I think it's very funny to
- 50:30happen. Is it like?
- 50:32From story to story, whether it's Big Finish, comics or
- 50:35books, yeah, whether the writer, that's writer, the particular
- 50:38story likes it or not. He has that ability.
- 50:40Sometimes it's completely forgotten and other times it's
- 50:43lent into. I like that, though I think they
- 50:45could have done a bit more with that.
- 50:46It was a childish dream that make you think you could push
- 50:49back death. He just seems to just know these
- 50:51things. I like it, yeah.
- 50:53I think they could have done that bit more in big.
- 50:56Finish. I'd rather think the idea is, is
- 50:57that he's looked into the timeline so much you can just
- 51:00sort of see people and he knows the web of their lives.
- 51:04Yeah. Oh, here we go.
- 51:06Chang Lee's got in the TARDIS. So this is where we get a proper
- 51:10little view around this set. And I've seen or I've read
- 51:14criticism again where okay, this is where this is your interest
- 51:18in going in the TARDIS moment for new viewers.
- 51:20Whereas as fans we knew that Sylvester McCoy was in the
- 51:24TARDIS there, but you don't know as a viewer that's never seen
- 51:28it. You've seen Sylvester McCoy and
- 51:30Jelly Babies. There he comes.
- 51:32I know he comes out-of-the-box, but the connection between the
- 51:35two hasn't really been established.
- 51:38Maybe this should have been a bit earlier.
- 51:39No, no, no. And then we know, or is it, is
- 51:42it good to wait at this point? There's another moment.
- 51:45If this commentary with Matt Michael before he said he
- 51:47thought this was should have been the first time we went in
- 51:50really maximum impact and actually you know the bit where
- 51:52he comes out to not see the tiles.
- 51:54Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so McCoy lands set.
- 51:58I just want this to be my house. I just want to leave the.
- 52:02Point where I do wanted that we turn the living room into this I
- 52:06I just want to leave it and there's.
- 52:07Some on the.net someone's recreated that have you seen on
- 52:09Instagram and they've got all the, they've pretty much
- 52:12recreated this. And I was like, Oh my God.
- 52:14Can I go back, Sorry please that the the the film should open in
- 52:18San Francisco and Chang Lee. That should be the start of the
- 52:22film. And then McCoy, just the stylist
- 52:24materializes during the action sequence.
- 52:26He steps out. And so you're kind of all
- 52:28baffled about it and so you don't get the answers straight
- 52:30away. Not all that voice over at the
- 52:32beginning, not all that back story.
- 52:35And then this would have such a great impact when he goes into
- 52:38the title. See, I've.
- 52:39I actually think that is a better approach.
- 52:41Oh, he looks chilling. I don't mean Chang Li.
- 52:45I mean the master Chang Li's very prissy.
- 52:48But the bit where Chang Lee comes out of the TARDIS and it's
- 52:51shot from above? That's shot for shot.
- 52:53The runaway Bride with Donna coming out of the TARDIS.
- 52:56That's how they do it now. Oh, that console.
- 53:00The idea of connecting the middle of the console to the
- 53:03ceiling as well? It's fabulous and with the
- 53:06scanner over the you know. The blue light.
- 53:09Oh my God, it's just the lighting.
- 53:10That blue is perfect, isn't it For?
- 53:13He's not dead. He's stolen my body.
- 53:20Is he Masters? Is he?
- 53:23I think he's he's entertaining. He's not scary, but he is
- 53:25entertaining. Oh, especially at the end when
- 53:28he comes out in his dress, Yeah. And there is something weirdly
- 53:33homoerotic going on here between him and Chang Lee.
- 53:36Don't you think you want to read that into it then?
- 53:39He's dressed head to toe and lever.
- 53:40I'm promising him the universe I his arsehole.
- 53:43Come on now. Oh, I love the Sing in the park.
- 53:48A meter storm. It let the sky above us was
- 53:51dancing with lights. Gallifrey.
- 53:55Yes. Now where is that rival Time
- 53:58Lord? Oh my God.
- 53:59The Master? Is he like the Devil?
- 54:01Yeah, My favorite line in something is when it's when
- 54:05Grace says where'd he go? See, this is rival timeline.
- 54:08Rival timeline. Oh my God.
- 54:10But you know what, right? I mean, these sitcom moments
- 54:12between the two of them now are blissful and the bit in the
- 54:15ambulance and all of that. Absolutely blissful in the
- 54:17party. Blissful.
- 54:19But we've had like science fiction at the beginning.
- 54:21Then we went to like an ER style medical drama.
- 54:26Then we went to some weird horror with the snake going
- 54:28around the guy's bedroom. Like, totally it is all over the
- 54:31face. I love it all, but it is weird.
- 54:35So that's Vancouver there. That skyline, That cityscape, If
- 54:40you has anyone been there Is it on the .2 locations tall I've.
- 54:43Dressed it with fairy lights. Look.
- 54:45Yeah, it does look romantic, doesn't it?
- 54:48It's funny, this was all like New Year's Eve and everything,
- 54:50but it was only like the middle of summer over here.
- 54:52This would be a New Year's Special new.
- 54:58Year's Yeah, it should be a New Year's Special.
- 55:01Move over resolution. Oh, the bit where Daphne
- 55:04Ashbrook stares at the camera like Looney Tunes and all this.
- 55:08What's in all these different drawers and all those books.
- 55:11I just want to explore all of this stuff.
- 55:14So a water thing, a water filter thing.
- 55:18I just want oh I love those doors, those doors with the seal
- 55:20of rattle on. This is my all time favorite
- 55:25TARDIS. I think second second is the
- 55:28Capaldi one, which I think is similarly gorgeous.
- 55:30Well, it's it's got that darker tone as well, but this.
- 55:32Just feels bigger. I know it's just the the size of
- 55:34it, but luckily we didn't get any episodes where the TARDIS is
- 55:37crashing and holding on all of that stuff going from side to
- 55:40side, all those plants falling off.
- 55:43I think it's it gets so operatic when we go into the Eye of
- 55:46Harmony and there's bats flying around.
- 55:48I mean that's maybe a little bit over the top, but.
- 55:51Where's the sunlight coming from?
- 55:53It's a TARDIS. Isn't it?
- 55:54Oh, it's a supernova that created the Eye of Harmony.
- 55:56Of course you can have anything, anything in the world.
- 56:00What would it be? 1,000,000 bucks.
- 56:03Only 1,000,000, OK, 2 million, that's.
- 56:07A thing bigger a billion dollars.
- 56:10What would that buy you? Power.
- 56:18It's so horrible. Though, isn't it?
- 56:22You get the rest when I get my body back.
- 56:27That's how I feel when I see anyone honking.
- 56:29He. Stole my body.
- 56:34But Charlie sort of accepts everything very easily, but
- 56:38especially he's in. The 90s and he's been watching
- 56:40Sliders. This is all very I can't really
- 56:44describe. Raiders of the Lost Ark?
- 56:45Yeah, sort of dungeon, 90s Dungeons and Dragons style.
- 56:50I mean, I'm not sure if they needed the bat flying around.
- 56:53Do you? Remember when the Cloister Room
- 56:54was just a a few ferns and a bit of Ivy?
- 56:57Of Ivy and Tom Baker looking miserable?
- 56:59Yeah. The TARDIS has had a redress.
- 57:03It's got a bit more melodramatic to see Cheegan getting lost in
- 57:07this. I'd like to speak to the pilot.
- 57:10The bat's coming around. What?
- 57:11The hell is this huge? Ball.
- 57:15She'll be there screaming. After Man's nose is ever in
- 57:18charge of this ship, well, somewhere there is Tegan's
- 57:23lipsticks scrawl on the side. Oh, hang on, we're getting to
- 57:26this bit in a second, aren't we? Where he realizes the Doctor is
- 57:29half human. OK, the half human stuff.
- 57:32I'm not bothered about that. It doesn't matter, does she?
- 57:34Been fucking then. Oh no, his mum.
- 57:36Dad. Is his mum human or his dad?
- 57:40Did he say his mother's side? So his mum's human.
- 57:43So a time law came to work and had sex with a woman.
- 57:45But doesn't this, Doesn't this? Isn't this where Longborough
- 57:50came in? Where they explained that Lila
- 57:51was actually the Doctor Leader and Andrea are the Doctor's
- 57:54parents. Oh, for something like that?
- 57:57Isn't that in Longborough? Platt's gone and that's what the
- 58:00implication is. So that's a half.
- 58:02That's where the half human thing comes from as well.
- 58:04OK, but that was just before this I suppose.
- 58:08You pulled the stare from the stone.
- 58:11The music. Listen to this music.
- 58:13It's. So dramatic, the Eye of Harmony
- 58:20is opening. Is that euphemism?
- 58:28And here we go. This is more info on what the
- 58:30master is. Who the?
- 58:31Master is all this stuff Grace needs catching up on.
- 58:34I think Matthew Jacobs, right, is absolutely brilliant when
- 58:37he's doing relationship dramas in this, yeah.
- 58:40But when he's got to do exposition, nobody can make this
- 58:43stuff sound convincing. I would just have the kiss.
- 58:46Controversial kiss at the time, I mean.
- 58:48That was now is it thing going on?
- 58:50He's. Looking at Clara's skirt
- 58:51nowadays and all sorts, what did you think of the kiss at the
- 58:54time? I didn't mind it so much.
- 58:58I'm not one of those gays that's like, oh, how dare Doctor Who be
- 59:01heterosexual. And I just feel like all the
- 59:03other heroes. I I get the complaint.
- 59:05I mean, that kiss there is excitable.
- 59:08I've just remembered kiss at the end.
- 59:10One is more of a romantic kiss. I'm pleased it was Paul McGann
- 59:13and Daphne Ashbrook and not Sylvester McCoy.
- 59:17Well, my granddad watched all of Doctor Who from the beginning.
- 59:21I was like a big William Martin or fan and everything and sat
- 59:23down to watch this and the moment Doctor and Grace kissed.
- 59:27He switched off. He switched it off.
- 59:28He went Oh, and then switched off and went.
- 59:30And then when Rose was on, he watched all of the Christian
- 59:34records in the series. And right at the end, where the
- 59:36Doctor and Rose kissed, he switched off and stopped
- 59:38watching. Good thing you weren't watching
- 59:40the Moffett era. He would have smashed his TV
- 59:43with a hammer. Yeah.
- 59:44So yeah, he got to this point in the story and was like, no, I
- 59:49can't deal with it anymore. Can you ask answer a question
- 59:53for me please? Why does he?
- 59:55Suddenly say I need a brilliant atomic clock.
- 59:59What? Why does it need one?
- 1:00:01Well, because it's the only technology on Earth that can.
- 1:00:04Shut the Eye of Harmony. Shut the Eye of Harmony I.
- 1:00:06Don't actually specifically say that though, do they?
- 1:00:08I need a brilliant, you know, he's like, I need a brilliant
- 1:00:11clock and then it just happens to be on the news that they've.
- 1:00:13Got this brilliant there in San Francisco, where they are.
- 1:00:16There just happens to be the exact clock, naturally.
- 1:00:20The most accurate atomic clock in the world.
- 1:00:24It just happens to be there, yeah.
- 1:00:27Poor Daffy that's trying to get through all this exposition.
- 1:00:30Oh, that's a bit more of a curly wig that he's got on there in
- 1:00:32this scene. I love it when when she is
- 1:00:35saying all this shit and she goes Oh my God and she starts
- 1:00:38looking around her like someone help me and then all of a sudden
- 1:00:42she just goes no and it runs off.
- 1:00:46Can I just go back to the Radio Times a minute?
- 1:00:48Because there's some amazing prizes available.
- 1:00:50If you were watching at the time, what would you what would
- 1:00:55you like to win here? So we've got I mean, the star
- 1:00:57prize is a Doctor Who plaque created exclusively for Radio
- 1:01:01Times in Hollywood. Sealed inside is an actual.
- 1:01:04Created in Hollywood frame of film from the new production
- 1:01:08with the signatures of executive Producer Philip D Seagal and the
- 1:01:12Doctor Who in Radio Times logos. I wonder how much that is worth
- 1:01:16now. Would you also like video of the
- 1:01:18new TV movie worth 1499? Yes please.
- 1:01:22TARDIS T-shirt. Oh, AT shirt I'd love.
- 1:01:24And belt buckles on leather for leather.
- 1:01:28Belt Cyberman Designs or. Or logo designs we both like.
- 1:01:32The leather belt. They've got darling key rings.
- 1:01:34We've got posters featuring Eric Roberts as the master.
- 1:01:37I'll work on it. It's all time campus.
- 1:01:40We've got mouse mats showing Paul Megan outside the TARDIS.
- 1:01:44I want all of it. We've got postcard sets.
- 1:01:48We've got the books written by Gary Russell with eight pages of
- 1:01:51colour stills from the film Oh my God.
- 1:01:54But also a whole. It's like Satly Satly Swap Shop.
- 1:01:57You could win audio sets. A unique collection of two
- 1:02:00cassettes. Planet of the Dialects, Read by
- 1:02:01John Perry in Attack of the Cybermen, read by Colin Baker.
- 1:02:05Both cassettes Worth 599. What?
- 1:02:09Did you ever read Colin Baker's Perry in that?
- 1:02:12No. Oh, blacker.
- 1:02:14Or you could win a family pass to Doctor Who Exhibition at
- 1:02:17Lower D Mill Langloughlin. Usual price 10 lbs, which houses
- 1:02:22the largest collection of memorabilia from BBCTV series,
- 1:02:24including costumes, props, light and sound effects.
- 1:02:28That's where Dapple was. OK, I'll ask you another
- 1:02:32question. Why is the Eye of Harmony
- 1:02:34causing windows to to melt like this?
- 1:02:39It's the instability of the Earth.
- 1:02:42Oh really? Well, it starts in subtle ways
- 1:02:45and then soon in catastrophic ways.
- 1:02:47By midnight tonight. Yes.
- 1:02:49What? The planet will be sucked inside
- 1:02:51out. I'm getting the bed and
- 1:02:52psychiatric. Dear, Oh dear, Have you ever
- 1:02:56sucked anyone inside out at midnight?
- 1:03:00Oh my God, can I say the line? I'm going to need a bed and
- 1:03:02psychiatric. Better make a tilt.
- 1:03:08Oh, it's great. I mean.
- 1:03:10I feel logically it doesn't make a lot of sense this.
- 1:03:14I think this is where, yeah, the plot doesn't really, but it's
- 1:03:17not. It's not really about that, is
- 1:03:19it's? The Doctor needs to stop the
- 1:03:20Master. What's that line all about
- 1:03:22there? About losing weight because the
- 1:03:24metabolism of the world is out of sync.
- 1:03:26Well, why is that going to affect his weight?
- 1:03:29The metabolism of the world, Well, I mean, I've just.
- 1:03:31I mean. You make a fortune in the
- 1:03:33weightlap. With dialogue like that, you've
- 1:03:37got to have some sort of visual clues, haven't you?
- 1:03:39And. Here we are.
- 1:03:40He's on the news. The atomic mark.
- 1:03:41This. Is the precursors of Trinity
- 1:03:44Wells? Aren't they the new this is the
- 1:03:46Trinity Wells of the time? So you're going to be there,
- 1:03:48aren't you? Naturally.
- 1:03:51Look at these two together. They're just made for each
- 1:03:54other, aren't they? Megad and Ashbrook forever.
- 1:03:56He's got a different wig there, I think.
- 1:03:58Stop cutting on a page once you see it.
- 1:04:01You can't. Buy them again, Wig.
- 1:04:02All right. OK, you.
- 1:04:04Want me so? Are they available?
- 1:04:06I bet they've got something in The Who shop.
- 1:04:08They absolutely should be. But doing the news reports, it's
- 1:04:16very new series again, isn't it? And we cut to that during the
- 1:04:20catastrophic climax of the adventure.
- 1:04:22In fact, if you look at the climax of this adventure, a lot
- 1:04:25of the visuals look a bit like the visuals at the end of
- 1:04:28Boomtown. The electricity coming down over
- 1:04:30the city cracks in the floor. Do you think this has more to do
- 1:04:34with new series of survival then?
- 1:04:38I think it's a good, it's a good.
- 1:04:39It bridges the gap between this and Oh my God, of course it's
- 1:04:43the master. I think this is where an advert
- 1:04:45break was in America. Does the Doctor know it's the
- 1:04:53Master? I I'm not sure if it's clear.
- 1:04:57I think maybe in the back of his mind.
- 1:04:59What I love there is the unspoken bit, he goes, I need
- 1:05:02you to take me to this place. And Grace is looking at him
- 1:05:04going, no, we're going to the site and he goes, yeah 'cause I
- 1:05:07know where it is, yeah. Oh, and if Grace had just looked
- 1:05:10through and saw Chang Lee driving the ambulance, she would
- 1:05:12know. She would recognize him.
- 1:05:13I. Want you to go from the
- 1:05:14hospital? The dialogue here is great.
- 1:05:17Do you kiss Madam Curry too? This is what this is.
- 1:05:20Excuse me? Sorry, did you kiss Madam Curry
- 1:05:23too? Naturally, it's as good as me as
- 1:05:27well as you. And this is what we want more of
- 1:05:31Doctor and Grace in these situations.
- 1:05:33Yeah, quick talk. There's loads of it.
- 1:05:35Now this is what we could you could just.
- 1:05:36Imagine the whole movie show. Episodes.
- 1:05:39In this in other on other planets in other times.
- 1:05:42That's right. Here's a Time Lord, all of this
- 1:05:44stuff going on, you know, you could see this happening in like
- 1:05:46a Victorian carriage sometime or, you know.
- 1:05:50But think think of Tennant and Donna.
- 1:05:52I think of Matt Smith and Clara. It's that sort of fast-paced
- 1:05:57dialogue, isn't it? What's going on here with the
- 1:05:59chickens? Something's held up the road and
- 1:06:01it's the chicken thing. Obviously.
- 1:06:04What are the chosen chickens? I don't know.
- 1:06:06There's a there's a wonderful bit in a minute where they go
- 1:06:09running right then the camera swings round, the chicken goes.
- 1:06:15Oh Christ. I mean, I think that's pretty
- 1:06:17cool, the way he gunks out of his mouth.
- 1:06:19Like, I mean, I'm glad we didn't have this ability back in the
- 1:06:2280s or. There was plenty of gunk in the
- 1:06:2480s. What are you talking about?
- 1:06:26Yeah, no, but imagine if he was doing that all over the place.
- 1:06:28Auntie Aynley was gunking all over everybody.
- 1:06:32There's been a few times when I've been covered in gunk and
- 1:06:34gone. Get it off me.
- 1:06:35Get it? Off me look look like chicken.
- 1:06:40Oh, this scene in a minute is just perfect.
- 1:06:45No, take it, he's British. Oh, I love that.
- 1:06:50When he offers a Jelly baby and he goes.
- 1:06:55And how doctorates, is it to say release us or I'll shoot myself?
- 1:07:00You see there's stuff like the Jelly babies you could add that,
- 1:07:03that could be. And you know that's perfect.
- 1:07:05It's all the extra, you know, the Eye of Harmony, the 900 year
- 1:07:09diary, all that kind of stuff, but just having the Jelly.
- 1:07:11But that's all you need as a reference back if you were going
- 1:07:14forward. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:15Yeah, you don't need anything else.
- 1:07:17There's far too much that story and detail in this.
- 1:07:19They want to prove that they're making Doctor Who.
- 1:07:21Yeah, there's two things you bring forward, and there's
- 1:07:24certain things you just sort of leave in the decade that it was
- 1:07:27left in. I can't make your dream come
- 1:07:29true. But I can make it come true
- 1:07:30today. Oh, I love this When she goes
- 1:07:34get. The keys.
- 1:07:35There's an alternative scene, isn't there, of this, of this
- 1:07:40bit where I think it might be on the delete where where it's like
- 1:07:43given the keys. Actually I don't know.
- 1:07:45I've heard. I've recently heard the the
- 1:07:48audio book of this, so I don't maybe that's in it, but in when
- 1:07:52it's given the keys, everybody in the traffic jam and everyone
- 1:07:54goes. Give him the key.
- 1:07:56No, no, no. It's an outtake that's an
- 1:07:58alternative version of it. Should have made it into that,
- 1:08:00made it into the novel. Maybe it was in the original
- 1:08:03script? This is the.
- 1:08:04Second time I would like to turn it up now because I just want
- 1:08:07everyone to hear how great the music is in this.
- 1:08:09You ready? OK, it's car chase.
- 1:08:11Ahoy. Well, you've got have a car
- 1:08:13chase. I mean, it's Doctor Who haven't
- 1:08:19been this exciting. No, I mean what the nearest
- 1:08:23we've had is Bestie going up and.
- 1:08:26Down this and ambassadors of death.
- 1:08:30Look at the editing as they go through the two vans though.
- 1:08:34Breathe in, Liz. That's what they needed.
- 1:08:39That's what. They.
- 1:08:40Needed. In a lot of the Purpley stories
- 1:08:43he should have had a motorbike instead of Bessie, and Liz would
- 1:08:45have got on the back of that and they would have had amazing
- 1:08:49chases. That's what we needed.
- 1:08:50I think all this part of the movie is heaven.
- 1:08:58Oh, I think that's a stunt. Paul McGann There I saw the
- 1:09:00face. Responded it Terry Welsh the 90s
- 1:09:03Just. Went past there.
- 1:09:06What are you doing, Lee? I know what I'm doing.
- 1:09:09Trust me. I just do every line, don't you?
- 1:09:14Hey, I finally met the right guy and he's from another planet.
- 1:09:18I mean, if they had a budget, they could have had The Who
- 1:09:20mobile flying around flying above San Francisco.
- 1:09:25This was the one. Time They did have their budget.
- 1:09:30The the scary thing is right, is I think certain episodes of the
- 1:09:32new series have a bigger budget than 5 million.
- 1:09:35Yeah. Oh yeah, I think.
- 1:09:37So they don't look as good as this.
- 1:09:38They don't look as good as this. I'm sorry, but I think you've
- 1:09:41got all the you've got Hollywood behind this.
- 1:09:43I mean, it's Amblin and Spielberg and all of that.
- 1:09:46I mean the. I mean the car chases.
- 1:09:48I mean the the roads are pretty empty for a car chase, you know
- 1:09:51they have. There's another extraneous
- 1:09:53character, the man just trying to steal the the tyre off the
- 1:09:56car there. Is he still in the car or what
- 1:09:59was he doing? It's just a bit of extra.
- 1:10:01Oh, do you know my favorite one is my favorite extraneous
- 1:10:04character is the fellow who goes to the TARDIS on the bike and
- 1:10:06then comes out, I guess. Yeah, I can't stop the brakes.
- 1:10:13That was definitely in the trailer.
- 1:10:15When she goes, I find him out. The right guide is from another
- 1:10:18planet. Oh man, Do you think there's
- 1:10:22ever a time where you wouldn't enjoy this?
- 1:10:24No. Why?
- 1:10:26I thought. It's just so much fun, isn't it?
- 1:10:27It's. So much fun you don't need.
- 1:10:30You shouldn't really think about the plot too much.
- 1:10:32I'll say it again a million times in this post.
- 1:10:34COVID. Miserable Tory Britain watching
- 1:10:37this is absolute heaven. I think this is advert.
- 1:10:44Advert. Break Yeah.
- 1:10:46Oh, all the party scenes now. Oh, here we go.
- 1:10:49This is Professor Wag from London.
- 1:10:51I'm on the board of trustees. Thank you very much.
- 1:10:56This looks like a great pie, doesn't it?
- 1:10:59I feel like they've put a bit of money into this, like all the
- 1:11:02balloons have gone on the budget well also and talk about the
- 1:11:04Millennium and everything. This is before we had talk in
- 1:11:07the Millennium bug and all of those things.
- 1:11:08This is 96. I don't remember talking of
- 1:11:11Millennium bug being no only a few years before you sort of
- 1:11:17forget that it's set in the future at the time.
- 1:11:21Mark Grace says that you have a big secret.
- 1:11:24What is it? I'm half human on Mother's side.
- 1:11:32Thank you very much. Look at that pie.
- 1:11:36That's phrase all got on. There we go.
- 1:11:39There's all the Trinity Wells is.
- 1:11:41I wonder where this is. It's a bloody big building you
- 1:11:43can go. It's on the location website.
- 1:11:46Oh, look, is that clock still there?
- 1:11:48I I don't think this is real. San Francisco Meme time.
- 1:11:54Oh boy. I don't think this story would
- 1:11:56have worked if it was set in London though.
- 1:11:58He only needs the smallest part of it.
- 1:12:00No, it works. Because it's an America.
- 1:12:02All these people that are at this party, have any of them
- 1:12:05done any Doctor Who signings? I wonder?
- 1:12:06No. Gareth, Gareth, Gareth.
- 1:12:09He's been on flight for entirety.
- 1:12:11He's a massive Doctor Who fan. Oh, I love Gareth.
- 1:12:15Answer the second question on your exam.
- 1:12:18Oh, Professor Wags. So, like, this is very Doctor
- 1:12:21Who in American program. The professor would be sort of
- 1:12:26very dull. And he's a bit quirky, isn't he?
- 1:12:28An idiosyncratic No, no. I am the only one who has a
- 1:12:34pals. Look.
- 1:12:37Definitely asked for acting behind him.
- 1:12:40If you just look at her everything, expressions, she's
- 1:12:43just doing that amazing. Amazing Grace.
- 1:12:46Oh, she is amazing. Grace, look at her that even
- 1:12:49just she's out of shock, but you can still tell.
- 1:12:52I'm half human. A moment of a side I like.
- 1:12:57Oh, this is great. Yes, I think you must be.
- 1:13:00Oh. Oh.
- 1:13:04I think he got zipped his trousers, that's why she read.
- 1:13:09I can't believe there's a Dick joke in this before Steven
- 1:13:12Moffett, isn't it? What is it they say?
- 1:13:16They say that on my planet too, Yeah.
- 1:13:21They stuff feel like some quirky American heist movie now, don't
- 1:13:24it, You think? Actually Edmond Sliders would
- 1:13:28have been on at the time as well.
- 1:13:29It's it's got that Sliders vibe sometimes.
- 1:13:32Look at Daphne Ashbrook. She is loving every second of
- 1:13:34this. Oh, I love.
- 1:13:38Her more I know. I want more, Gareth.
- 1:13:46You see, you need psychic paper when you can just go.
- 1:13:48I know you. Look at Daphne acting now she.
- 1:13:53Looks very confused. About everything.
- 1:13:57Oh, we love you. Definitely Ashbrook.
- 1:14:01Oh, Jelly. But of course it's a Jelly baby.
- 1:14:05We've had Tom Baker scarf. We've had the Jelly babies.
- 1:14:07Anything else? Is that the only bit he gets?
- 1:14:10I know he gets a little kiss. At the end, don't he by the
- 1:14:12girl? But then how does he know all
- 1:14:15this stuff? He's looked into the web of time
- 1:14:17all these times. You mean that, don't you?
- 1:14:25My God. Oh my God, the master Mark.
- 1:14:27There's a kid who took a. Stuff.
- 1:14:33Oh my God, this is the filthiest scene ever now.
- 1:14:36All these guards covered in calm.
- 1:14:39It's pretty grim. This isn't it.
- 1:14:42We. Didn't see that happening.
- 1:14:44People, they have to throw up to cover them.
- 1:14:48Excuse me, That's a lot. How much come you've thrown up
- 1:14:54in your life? Oh my God, this is great.
- 1:14:59Of course they escaped down the hose, don't they?
- 1:15:01Down the building. It's a very Hollywood way of
- 1:15:03doing it. And they've got the organ game.
- 1:15:08It's the the American equivalent of, oh, Professor Wag, you're
- 1:15:15going to be trampled. He's the modern version of
- 1:15:20Professor Kettle. Well, isn't he?
- 1:15:22He just needs the extra bit of hair.
- 1:15:23He looks like him. Miss Winters there.
- 1:15:25Incompetent poops. I love it when they get the door
- 1:15:30open. Why is there a guy Hoover in the
- 1:15:32floor? They're in the middle of the
- 1:15:33party. Did you see what he did?
- 1:15:35He gets the door and he goes. Doctor, you would not have that
- 1:15:38guy cleaning there with all this stuff when the party literally
- 1:15:43was happening a few minutes ago in the middle of all this
- 1:15:45dinner. That does not make sense.
- 1:15:46Did you see the policeman there who drove his car up just in
- 1:15:50time for the Doctor and Grace to land on him?
- 1:15:52As they're coming down the building on the hose, I thought
- 1:15:55someone should do an essay on the extraneous characters of the
- 1:15:58TV movie. We've seen so many so far.
- 1:16:00Different ones, isn't it? That's a whole like little short
- 1:16:02story. Going on in their lives, Yeah,
- 1:16:03it'd be like a nice charity ontology.
- 1:16:06It could be like the the people that the doctor touched in San
- 1:16:09Francisco. No, I mean their lives.
- 1:16:15The San Francisco Diaries. Can you tell me my future?
- 1:16:19No, Oh. Come on.
- 1:16:22Oh, this is all great as well. TARDIS.
- 1:16:24Where'd you leave your key mark? In a covering hole above the.
- 1:16:27P Great minds, they collect. Oh, she does the thing, doesn't
- 1:16:34she? Where she goes.
- 1:16:35Oh, that explains the dimensional transcendentalism
- 1:16:37when you. Walk in the doors or she Yeah,
- 1:16:39yeah. She is a confident, sassy miss.
- 1:16:43That is a strange coat she's wearing.
- 1:16:46Oh, and you have. Yeah, this motorbike joke is
- 1:16:49funny. It is a great visual gag this
- 1:16:52they really they're editing does it.
- 1:16:55And the sound effects of him turning around, going I'm
- 1:16:57turning. Around.
- 1:16:59Again, and she just goes, Oh my. Really, every time we're in this
- 1:17:11set I just looking around the edges and looking in the
- 1:17:15background and you see something different every time, like a
- 1:17:17statue. Or a Do you know why it's so
- 1:17:19evocative? Look at all the different
- 1:17:21lighting sources. There's candles in there.
- 1:17:23It's lit from above. It's lit from the rotor.
- 1:17:26It's just really interestingly, this is the best TARDIS lighting
- 1:17:29since Enlightenment part one. Better than that, I just turned
- 1:17:33the lights orange. Battlefield Part One not.
- 1:17:36The worst. Oh, they make grace evil now,
- 1:17:41yeah? How does she know about spatial
- 1:17:45displacement as you go through the door?
- 1:17:47Oh, there we go. See he.
- 1:17:50Needs that shut the. Eye.
- 1:17:52So that's it. We've done it about all these
- 1:17:53leaves everywhere. I suppose that's what the
- 1:17:55Cloister Room was back back in the day.
- 1:17:58So got this? Yeah, Well, I mean.
- 1:18:01They've done it too late. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:18:04He needs to go back in time before it's too late, yeah.
- 1:18:08Why? I don't know.
- 1:18:11It don't make it. Don't make very much sense, does
- 1:18:13it? This might be the bit where
- 1:18:16Terence was saying it was incoherent crap.
- 1:18:18Oh, with the ceiling scanner. I didn't like it at first, the
- 1:18:22ceiling scanner, but I've got used to it now it just doesn't
- 1:18:25understand. What is wrong with you?
- 1:18:26This has been reliable, a broken clack because it came on.
- 1:18:36Oh, this whole scene is great. You must have the answer.
- 1:18:41You must. What about the future, Gareth?
- 1:18:44Mean the city you've not noticed that like water bottle on the
- 1:18:47side of the TARDIS there before? Now that's the rotor.
- 1:18:50That ain't a water bottle on the side.
- 1:18:52There's a bottle. Or is that someone on the
- 1:18:54camera? But like that Starbucks cup in
- 1:18:56Game of Thrones? Looks like he's been drinking
- 1:18:58something on the. Come from some weird thing.
- 1:19:04This is great to have these shots between.
- 1:19:05Between the two. In in the middle of that look,
- 1:19:07there's a bottle on the side. Look.
- 1:19:08Oh. Yeah, As for one of the crew,
- 1:19:12I'll bet it's got so many possibilities of different
- 1:19:14angles to shoot through, through and round.
- 1:19:17I just think there's so many, but there's also so many
- 1:19:19possibilities with this dynamic. Yeah, this would have fuelled a
- 1:19:22series or two easily. I just watched these two just
- 1:19:25chatting in the TARDIS, arguing all day.
- 1:19:27Please. Oh, she bashes him over the head
- 1:19:30now, and she look. Oh, evil black contact lenses
- 1:19:35are in. Those are the same contact
- 1:19:37lenses they gave Luxana, Troy. You know, the black ones?
- 1:19:40Oh yeah, yeah, that's that's my whole point.
- 1:19:43I'd hate to have those. Oh, you can't see much out of
- 1:19:45them. Oh yeah, it must be horrible.
- 1:19:47Sort of it when these sisters were put it on in grace, I
- 1:19:51suspect you know how is? He suggested.
- 1:19:53She's into bondage. Not sure what's that line
- 1:19:57supposed to mean. She's been taken over by evil.
- 1:19:59Last. Oh, OK.
- 1:20:01She's a kinky bitch. Did.
- 1:20:04You see? Brian earlier.
- 1:20:06He looked kinky for me. That's it.
- 1:20:11Daphne stare evilly into the camera.
- 1:20:15Why didn't he take? Why didn't he just?
- 1:20:17Get Chang Li taken over. Did you ever hear all the the
- 1:20:21comparisons between Chang Li and Adric?
- 1:20:23The attribution. Went by.
- 1:20:24The master just like the same way change it is.
- 1:20:26It is basically the Attrac of the 90s, isn't it?
- 1:20:28The. Attrac Yeah, I never thought of.
- 1:20:30That pretty soon everything around here will be the master.
- 1:20:33You have like an Artful Dodger type.
- 1:20:35Just like the plants are the danger.
- 1:20:39Oh God, I always dress with the occasion.
- 1:20:45And it's it's just off of a Time Lord collar, isn't it?
- 1:20:48It's just almost there. It's no, no.
- 1:20:51He could have just come down. This is the first time they're
- 1:20:53acknowledging how fucking camp those costumes are.
- 1:20:56And they are. Did you see them all in the five
- 1:20:59doctors they looked? Obscenely had that costume at
- 1:21:02the Doctor Who experience. It was in the in the foyer bit I
- 1:21:05think. No, you couldn't touch it, but I
- 1:21:07saw it. It looks oh.
- 1:21:08Look at this, he kisses. Chang Lee, There's something
- 1:21:11kinky going on here, I'll tell you.
- 1:21:15And then he suggests there's something kinky going on between
- 1:21:17her and the Doctor. It's a whole kink fest, I.
- 1:21:20Mean you can read all sorts into it like you have.
- 1:21:22I do. I think Eric Roberts just goes
- 1:21:28to town on the camp now. Basically, this is the campus
- 1:21:31thing we've seen. This is Katamara and Tom with
- 1:21:33the Rani. Oh, mention those two on screen
- 1:21:35together, Katamara and Eric Roberts.
- 1:21:38And she could kick him in the nuts like she did with Anthony
- 1:21:40Angry. This one hurt much.
- 1:21:44He's basically a cartoon villain now.
- 1:21:47Oh, here we are, the the party. I love the bit.
- 1:21:50Where doesn't somebody like, put something in his face, though?
- 1:21:55That's a bit later. On.
- 1:21:56Isn't it that strange mask she's wearing?
- 1:21:58Mask. I thought like this bit where
- 1:21:59he's got his, his he's got his tray, he's plate so far, he
- 1:22:04froze his plate of food. Yeah, about 5 seconds after he
- 1:22:07blows feet in his face. Oh oh.
- 1:22:11Professor Wags having his moment here.
- 1:22:13He. Looks a bit like Barry Letts
- 1:22:14there, didn't he? But what is lovely is we've had
- 1:22:18little scenes with all these people.
- 1:22:20They're all at this party. So the climax does have some
- 1:22:23kind of emotional risk. We don't want these lovely comic
- 1:22:25characters to die and. This is a very is it quick
- 1:22:29orangey sort of image I feel. Yeah, with a thing.
- 1:22:33It's a shame. Though, 'cause he's in that for
- 1:22:35so long, we just want. Bit more Doctor.
- 1:22:37He's either memory loss doctor when we get peak Dr. And now
- 1:22:42we're just bondage doctor. I Bondage doctor.
- 1:22:45It's why we want Russell T to bring him back for a miniseries
- 1:22:48or something, just so we've got more.
- 1:22:50Obviously the false alarm is over and everyone's back in
- 1:22:52their seats and the Hoover guy has gone away now.
- 1:22:56Yeah, the Hoover guy. Another extraneous character.
- 1:22:59The extraneous characters of the TV movie Oh look.
- 1:23:04There's another extraneous character, the the Chinese guy
- 1:23:06who just goes. I don't know what's wrong with
- 1:23:08the clock. I love all this is so many.
- 1:23:12Lee, this is your last. Chance.
- 1:23:14This is my only chance. He's right, Doctor.
- 1:23:17No, gangs only. Death.
- 1:23:21That must have been so uncomfortable for Paul McGann.
- 1:23:25I have wasted all of my life. Really doesn't.
- 1:23:30I now I remember Hollywood insisted that they had a big
- 1:23:36climax in the close room. They wanted a big fight.
- 1:23:39I actually think it really works, because it's fishing.
- 1:23:41Yeah, you couldn't just have the sort of sucking, non sucking you
- 1:23:44need that, that fighting. Pardon, I I mean, I can see why
- 1:23:49it's it's a very Hollywood moment, but.
- 1:23:52I get that in a You need that in a Doctor Who story.
- 1:23:54You need a climax in a Doctor Who story anyway, I actually
- 1:23:56think. Else you're going to do because
- 1:23:57you haven't got your. Alien invasion E moment.
- 1:24:00This is your alien invasion E moment.
- 1:24:02It's one of the few times where you can see just how much the
- 1:24:04Master hates the Doctor. He is really trying to kill him,
- 1:24:09and him getting sucked into the Eye of Harmony is great.
- 1:24:14I think it's look at. This, he snips his.
- 1:24:16Neck. Oh, he's he's quite violent.
- 1:24:19Yeah, there's a lot, I mean. Eric Saywood will be loving
- 1:24:23this. You have to see.
- 1:24:27The consequence of the violence, you know.
- 1:24:29Some of you stopped her in that voice.
- 1:24:30Please. Oh, my God.
- 1:24:34You see the way he kisses her now?
- 1:24:35He sort of sucks the juice out of her.
- 1:24:38Why'd you get kissed like that? Once?
- 1:24:39It was very unpleasant about being sucked by an industrial
- 1:24:42vacuum cleaner. Oh, now she's human.
- 1:24:47Oh, this is where she gets to say today.
- 1:24:49Yeah. I do think that gives her a lot
- 1:24:53of agency though. She's the one that re rats the
- 1:24:56power. My God.
- 1:25:00Lights in everyone's faces. The camera's shaking, There's
- 1:25:03dry ice everywhere, leaves are blowing up.
- 1:25:05What had those leaves get in the TARDIS?
- 1:25:08Yeah, I said that earlier. Wow.
- 1:25:10I don't know when it's the close room.
- 1:25:11There, there was leaves with full filter and attitude.
- 1:25:14Wasn't it? Oh, just the plants.
- 1:25:15Yeah, fair enough. Must be a lot of plants.
- 1:25:18There's a lot of leaves. Oh, she's getting her sight
- 1:25:22back. Oh, the music is great.
- 1:25:26Bum bum bum bum bum bum bum. I just feel sorry for him again,
- 1:25:31having to shout and be in that for probably days on end.
- 1:25:36All his eyes look sore. Oh, I love this.
- 1:25:40So I want to you and I to have mobile like this.
- 1:25:42One day you'll die. If I leave you.
- 1:25:44We'll all die if you don't. Run, Joe, Run.
- 1:25:50Oh. This is all I aspire to in like
- 1:25:52electric around the TARDIS. Yeah, very Boomtown, yeah.
- 1:25:55And this is where a bit of stock footage of cities around the
- 1:25:58world coming up. Yeah, very Rusty Davis.
- 1:26:00Very new series again. Oh, I love this.
- 1:26:03And that the bit with the head and he sort of has a sort of
- 1:26:06leopardy type yeah face well. Maybe that's a cheater, people.
- 1:26:10Oh, of course. Survival.
- 1:26:15Do you see where he goes? I could hear your thoughts,
- 1:26:17Doctor. I could see your memory.
- 1:26:18So he sees him kissing. He goes oh, oh.
- 1:26:22What if Ace has been in her bedroom this whole time?
- 1:26:24She comes out. She's like, what's coming this?
- 1:26:26On who are you? This has been going on.
- 1:26:28You're not the professor. Yes, I am Ace.
- 1:26:36Oh my God, it's all go do. You know, at this point I
- 1:26:40literally do not give a shit. It doesn't matter the plot, it
- 1:26:42does not make any sense. It doesn't you.
- 1:26:44Wouldn't just watch the pretty images, yeah, watch the great
- 1:26:48acting. 30 seconds, 2928. So we've actually got them
- 1:26:54counted down to their own doom. It's very clever, using New
- 1:26:58Year's like this, yeah. There we go.
- 1:27:00There's this sort of weird master face.
- 1:27:03Effect. I don't think that was
- 1:27:04deliberately leaning into survival though.
- 1:27:05Oh. You can read into that.
- 1:27:09Oh Christ, you don't look good. And they are all counting down.
- 1:27:17Yeah, that bit with the when he turns his face.
- 1:27:19Oh, it's a little bit of it. Like Leonine, isn't it?
- 1:27:23More extraneous characters. They're counting down.
- 1:27:26I thought surgery was difficult. They should get all of those.
- 1:27:29Look the San Francisco Science going out.
- 1:27:32They should get all those people that are at that party to do a
- 1:27:35doctor convention at some point. He gets his Frankenstein over,
- 1:27:39doesn't he goes, I'm alone. Yeah.
- 1:27:44So does that make this a master story rather than a doctor's
- 1:27:47story? What?
- 1:27:47Do you mean? Oh, it seems to be all about the
- 1:27:50master now, doesn't it? That's I think that's the
- 1:27:53problem. You just don't get enough
- 1:27:54doctor. It's too many cooks, I'm telling
- 1:27:56you. You've got to do it.
- 1:27:59Oh, I can't do it. There we go.
- 1:28:02I. Can't do it.
- 1:28:03Can you do it? I can't do that.
- 1:28:07Hey, fireworks. This when I first watched it.
- 1:28:11This was a bit off, so confused. What was going on?
- 1:28:14Yeah, I never. All the world starts tearing up.
- 1:28:16Yeah, I never got it. But you know, she's going back
- 1:28:18to the point before the Iron Company was open.
- 1:28:20She's managed to rewrite the tardy rewire, the TARDIS.
- 1:28:24It's going back into the temporal orbit now.
- 1:28:29I mean. For.
- 1:28:31Doctor Who doesn't do this the whole time travel thing in terms
- 1:28:36of time loops and all that much. This sort of new series.
- 1:28:41This does make as much sense with time travel wise as the
- 1:28:44Stephen Moffitt script. So I, you know, I do object to
- 1:28:47those, I don't object to this. What's going on here?
- 1:28:50Look. Well, I think this is going back
- 1:28:52in time. So was the world destroyed or
- 1:28:55not? Well, no, because she's going
- 1:28:56back before it has, and it's all resetting everything.
- 1:28:58Did you see that? She's going back to the point
- 1:29:00of. Professor Wag died on a burp.
- 1:29:06Oh. Dear So the whole world's
- 1:29:08destroyed now, yeah? I think not.
- 1:29:10So yeah. And well, now we're going back.
- 1:29:12So it's not. It's all been UN unwritten now.
- 1:29:16It gets to go. No.
- 1:29:19I. Think if I'm right when the
- 1:29:21Master goes through into the I don't know whatever the I've
- 1:29:25harmony thing is there's I think he's been living out there
- 1:29:28because there's a Diary of River Song Big Finish episode, The
- 1:29:32Master living and it's after he's gone through this I think
- 1:29:37so. We've been asking that question
- 1:29:38forever. We're in temper orbit.
- 1:29:40What is it? We still don't know, do we?
- 1:29:44Oh, and then he pushes. I forgot.
- 1:29:46Oh, he pushes. This is nasty.
- 1:29:48That's cruel as well. I mean, there is an edge to
- 1:29:51this, isn't there? Like a sadistic edge to it.
- 1:29:54That's nice. You shouldn't be all safe.
- 1:29:56No, I know, I know, but. He's appalled.
- 1:30:00He's never going to snog her again.
- 1:30:02He does look for every inch the romantic hero now doesn't.
- 1:30:05He get enough of him running like that?
- 1:30:07No. Oh shit.
- 1:30:09This is this is your Hollywood fight.
- 1:30:10I love it. He kicks him in the face, kicks
- 1:30:14him in the stomach. Oh.
- 1:30:16I think that outfit is too nice to be like rolling around in
- 1:30:19fights and stuff, so. What the masters?
- 1:30:21Know the doctors. You want dominion over the
- 1:30:24living, but all you do is kill Do all.
- 1:30:26This action stuff. I think this is as close as
- 1:30:29they're going to get to examining the master, because.
- 1:30:32You want dominion over the living, but all you do is kill
- 1:30:34and the master goes. Life is wasted on the living.
- 1:30:37That's about it. I look slow motion.
- 1:30:41And he gets the and in he goes. That the light in his face.
- 1:30:47No, Doctor. That's a little bit comedy where
- 1:30:51he's been sucked down. Do you think?
- 1:30:55Comedy sucking. It's a bit of a comedy.
- 1:30:57Oh, and it's so limp, the way the Doctor offers his hand.
- 1:31:00He's like, well. Are you trying to give me lines
- 1:31:02here? You know that sort of noise when
- 1:31:06you suck people out? Oh my God.
- 1:31:08I mean, it is a bit comic, isn't it?
- 1:31:13I mean do. You have anything to say?
- 1:31:17No. Oh, the Masters did.
- 1:31:19And this is your your magic. Everyone comes back to like
- 1:31:23everybody lives. Moment.
- 1:31:24Excuse me, this is exactly what they did in the new series.
- 1:31:27How many times have I said that throughout this these are
- 1:31:30basically like the what were the particles called in Empty Child?
- 1:31:34Nano. Or just like regeneration
- 1:31:36energy. Yeah, this is regeneration
- 1:31:38energy because it's still got because it's just regenerated.
- 1:31:40And I do think you absolutely could wreck on it as that given
- 1:31:43what comes later. Now, going back in time, was
- 1:31:48that console. Oh, I'm really concerned about
- 1:31:51the news reader I love. Naturally, she did.
- 1:31:54No. Oh, about Gareth.
- 1:31:57See this statue? You see this statue?
- 1:32:00Yeah, like wrestle on. Is Gareth dead?
- 1:32:02No, it's Curtis dead. No, it's the guy who goes in the
- 1:32:05police car. Everybody lives.
- 1:32:07Everyone. That's very new series.
- 1:32:10Oh, I love John Lee's trainers there.
- 1:32:12Oh, look at this. Get those.
- 1:32:13He's silhouetted against the window with the wind blowing his
- 1:32:15hair. I mean, he's the romantic hero
- 1:32:18now, isn't it? Isn't this right?
- 1:32:25People hated this at the time, but this is the blueprint for
- 1:32:27the new. Series.
- 1:32:28There's there's regeneration energy coming.
- 1:32:30Out you tell me one regeneration story where they don't use
- 1:32:32regeneration energy at once? No.
- 1:32:34So do you think Russell T was paying attention?
- 1:32:36I think. So he loves this.
- 1:32:38He he absolutely loves this. Back to life, we've.
- 1:32:44Got our new TARDIS. Team I know the Doctor, Grace,
- 1:32:47Holloway and Chang Where? Would they go next right after
- 1:32:49this if they? Oh well, they're going to go
- 1:32:51back in time. Well, aren't they, of course.
- 1:32:53History. It'll be San Francisco in the
- 1:32:551800s. San.
- 1:32:57Francisco, you know they. Could do.
- 1:32:59You know, like it's all Cardiff in the new series, San
- 1:33:01Francisco. In this, I feel like they're
- 1:33:03going to go. Japan or somewhere like that.
- 1:33:04Chang Li's going to see his ancestors.
- 1:33:07I think that's just this company.
- 1:33:12Yeah, that's going to say oh. Cuddles lovely.
- 1:33:15Oh, that lighting from that window and.
- 1:33:17That's Cela Russell on Who knew when we when it first turned up
- 1:33:20in Revenge of the Cybermen, that the Doctor and Grace would be
- 1:33:23hugging underneath it all these years later in America?
- 1:33:27I can seal my Russell on any day.
- 1:33:31What a sentimental old thing this TARDIS is.
- 1:33:34I love that line. Look at them coming down the
- 1:33:37stairs now. This feels like your new
- 1:33:38confident TARDIS team, doesn't it?
- 1:33:42I mean, and you could totally have an adventure inside this
- 1:33:44TARDIS. Journey to the centre of the
- 1:33:45TARDIS in this TARDIS. And then to bridge this between
- 1:33:48the old series and the new series, he gets the bit where he
- 1:33:51hits the console when it stops working.
- 1:33:53Davidson did that. Colin did that.
- 1:33:56David Tennant does that. This is the Doctor.
- 1:33:59Oh, that's a great line. Indigestion.
- 1:34:02It's the master in the TARDIS, and that adds storytelling
- 1:34:04possibilities later. Yeah, look at them there.
- 1:34:08Oh. Gallifrey.
- 1:34:09Gallifrey. Yes.
- 1:34:15Was he a good 5 minutes in this whole thing?
- 1:34:18Oh, 10 minutes. Oh, they're so lovely together.
- 1:34:25Oh, I just want more. You know how we said about
- 1:34:28Dominion the time we're wanting more?
- 1:34:29Yeah, we just want more 90s Doctor Who, Don't we just?
- 1:34:31Want more of this? Well, OK.
- 1:34:34Would you sacrifice the new series for the same amount of
- 1:34:37series in the 90s? Oh my God.
- 1:34:42Yes. Yeah, I would too.
- 1:34:45I. Would too.
- 1:34:45I love the new series, but I would.
- 1:34:48I think Doctor Who in the 90s would have been peak Doctor Who.
- 1:34:50All of this with Paul McGann? He'd still be going.
- 1:34:53He still is. Look Grace and Chang Lee give
- 1:34:55each other a look. He waxed the console.
- 1:34:58And there we go. We're off.
- 1:35:01Oh, you watch now, though, when they land.
- 1:35:02It's raining, so Oh my. God, the hair is so frizzy.
- 1:35:06Oh, everyone's alive. Yes, everyone.
- 1:35:09Believed. Again.
- 1:35:11Oh, so that's not funny. Do you think he's been blowing
- 1:35:15that thing in everyone's faces? Gareth.
- 1:35:19Professor Wag, They're all still alive.
- 1:35:23Happy. New Year.
- 1:35:25Oh God, no guy. He's in Sliders the first he's
- 1:35:28he runs the hotel and every different dimension I go to in
- 1:35:31the first series, he's always like the hotel.
- 1:35:33Guy. Yeah, he's in.
- 1:35:35Yeah, he's in that as well. Oh, Gareth got his kiss.
- 1:35:39Look. Oh, we'll see you on flight for
- 1:35:42entirety, Gareth. Oh.
- 1:35:46Oh, this, this is amazing. I'd love to go to this location.
- 1:35:50The war games, you know where they go across.
- 1:35:52That misty thing. Yeah, you know that two cruises
- 1:35:54they do. You know the convention ones
- 1:35:58they did. They did A1, where you go and
- 1:36:00you go to all the Vancouver locations.
- 1:36:02Caroline Ford went on one. She's been all to the yeah,
- 1:36:06Caroline Ford, she went to a little TV movie location.
- 1:36:09She was a guest on this convention.
- 1:36:11No I can. Just imagine they're stepping
- 1:36:13all over those things. Really.
- 1:36:14She's been. I mean, she probably didn't give
- 1:36:16a. Like what was going on?
- 1:36:17Smashing. On anything, wouldn't she?
- 1:36:18She probably didn't even like it, no.
- 1:36:20I don't think she's watched it, but she went along on it.
- 1:36:22I feel like Doca Ho, Doca Ho and Mark RAW from two or two should
- 1:36:26be. Invited God.
- 1:36:27And this is the worst week moment because of the heck,
- 1:36:29because of the rain. Everyone's hair, that is.
- 1:36:32Yeah, look. I mean, look at.
- 1:36:34The doctor's giving him advice. Just don't be here, all right?
- 1:36:37See you around, Grace. And she goes, there you go
- 1:36:40again. Oh, I do.
- 1:36:43I do what I do wish you went in Natalis with him.
- 1:36:45But I do like her being an independent miss.
- 1:36:48I wonder if there was a reason. I mean, I mean.
- 1:36:51They weren't going to series. But did they know that at the
- 1:36:53time? I don't know.
- 1:36:55They should have shot two different versions.
- 1:36:56One's where she does go, one where she doesn't.
- 1:36:58That's a gorgeous liner. I know who I am and that's
- 1:37:00enough. Yeah.
- 1:37:04And then he goes, he goes, come with me, she goes, you come with
- 1:37:07me. Yeah.
- 1:37:09Oh, we love you, Grace Holloway. Is she the best doctor
- 1:37:13companion? Oh, she's so much fun.
- 1:37:16She's not very up there. I don't think she's as good as
- 1:37:18the evening smart. No.
- 1:37:20But she's very different, she. Thinks she's because Charlie
- 1:37:23Pollard. Oh, very close.
- 1:37:26Very close. I'll kiss #2.
- 1:37:27Yeah, this is the proper KISS, isn't it?
- 1:37:30I've never been kissed in fireworks.
- 1:37:31This flow behind the head before.
- 1:37:33I mean that's green screen, but. Very clearly green screen.
- 1:37:39It's very chaste kissing though, isn't it?
- 1:37:41Well, it's it's not supposed to talk true, isn't it?
- 1:37:44I know, but that's more like a a good night we're going to bed
- 1:37:48kiss rather than AI mean we're going to.
- 1:37:49Bed a lot. Kiss stuff to sort out.
- 1:37:53Phone Brian, get all the stuff sorted.
- 1:37:55She's going to get the sofa, she.
- 1:37:56Probably should be at work. No, she's.
- 1:37:58Quit. Quit.
- 1:37:58Yeah. She's going to have offers
- 1:38:00coming from all the hospitals. When she comes back in the
- 1:38:03Thomas strip, you know she's working with the military.
- 1:38:05She's still got that gloop on her arm.
- 1:38:07You see, what should happen is the Thomas goes off and then we
- 1:38:10get one of these secret scenes where helicopter comes in and
- 1:38:13it's Brigadier Bambera. Dr. Grace Holloway, come with
- 1:38:17me. You're needed for the unit spin
- 1:38:19off. Oh, we say that happens.
- 1:38:22That's brilliant. That's what we need.
- 1:38:24Yes, Brigadier Bambera and Grace Holloway.
- 1:38:27Oh, that is the dream. Yes, he shouldn't be on his own,
- 1:38:30really. I know this.
- 1:38:31Is but then? He he is reading the book and
- 1:38:33then in Storm warning Big Finish, his 1st, 8th Doctor
- 1:38:36story, he's reading the book and he.
- 1:38:38He's not reading The Time Machine, is he?
- 1:38:40Obviously reading Agatha Christie.
- 1:38:41No, he's talking about Lord Byron and Frankenstein, isn't
- 1:38:44he? I thought.
- 1:38:45I thought this LED into that. No, no, no, no, no.
- 1:38:48It's a bit different, but that's the same library.
- 1:38:50That is the library I see in Storm morning.
- 1:38:52Can you sing a bit of the song where he is?
- 1:38:53It was a. Beautiful.
- 1:38:56World. Add it, add it, add it.
- 1:39:02Oh no, here we go again. Oh wait, I've got to put the
- 1:39:05music up again. Oh, that's right.
- 1:39:16Gareth. Jeremy Raddick, Ted.
- 1:39:19Who's that? He's probably the guy on the
- 1:39:21bike. Do you know what I noticed more
- 1:39:25that time Above anything else? Yeah, was how all the extraneous
- 1:39:28characters were fabulous. I mean, it's not, it's not, it's
- 1:39:32not a huge cast. There's not many in terms of
- 1:39:34speaking roles, like we said in terms of the script.
- 1:39:36It's not a lie, no. But they managed to make all
- 1:39:38those extra characters have a moment in a way that Chris
- 1:39:41Tribble didn't make, and managed to make his actual characters
- 1:39:43have a moment. Don't start.
- 1:39:46That Oh. Well.
- 1:39:49I'm not sure I'll have to have more fun with a Doctor Who
- 1:39:51commentary. You know, so much fun.
- 1:39:54Well, so we need to now think of our three fabulous reasons.
- 1:39:57I mean, it's going to be very easy, isn't it?
- 1:39:59Well, OK, you go first. Well.
- 1:40:01Paul McGann as the Doctor. Not much screen time, but the
- 1:40:05impact that he makes and all of what he's gone on to do as the
- 1:40:09Doctor. And you say the whole branding
- 1:40:12of Doctor Who after this went on.
- 1:40:15You know, the books, the comic strips with the 8th Doctor, and
- 1:40:18of course, all the Big Finish. Can I let you let you ask?
- 1:40:21Yeah. His run across all those
- 1:40:23mediums, Big Finish, the books this, the comics.
- 1:40:27I think it's the best run of stories overall any doctor has.
- 1:40:31Any doctor? Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 1:40:35There's so much. So, yeah, Paul McGann,
- 1:40:38obviously. Well, that I'm going to be very
- 1:40:40obvious and say the love of our lives.
- 1:40:42Daphne Ashbrook, the woman who brought us together, she's just
- 1:40:47glorious, isn't she? And like, I mean, I don't think
- 1:40:51she's particularly going above and beyond.
- 1:40:53It's a script that offers her a lot to do and she does amazing
- 1:40:56with it. But I just think she clicks with
- 1:40:58Paul McCann brilliantly. And so that I think if you
- 1:41:01managed to score the chemistry. For example, I did scream in the
- 1:41:05shower recently, Too hot for TV, and you add Richard E Grant and
- 1:41:10Sophie Ocanedo, who's the bloody queen from the Beast below.
- 1:41:14No chemistry whatsoever. It fucking bombs the whole
- 1:41:17thing. But despite the fact that our
- 1:41:20plot is a bit incocurant, crap the fact that their chemistry is
- 1:41:24so good. Here's what sells this.
- 1:41:26That's why I can watch this and and get so much enjoyment from
- 1:41:29it. So Grace Holloway and Daphne
- 1:41:32Ashbrook is #1. I'm going to say Philip Seagal.
- 1:41:36Seagal. Seagal.
- 1:41:37I was so obsessed with getting this.
- 1:41:39Doctor. Who made fought, by the sounds
- 1:41:41of it, to get. 7 years and that determination to get this, and I
- 1:41:47know it's probably not exactly what he envisaged.
- 1:41:52I mean, I think he was just fighting to get something made
- 1:41:55and we're just grateful that something was made in the 90s.
- 1:41:58Did you not the original script that he said No, this is shit
- 1:42:01all about the doctor going looking for his dad's God.
- 1:42:03All of that shit. I.
- 1:42:04Can't There were sequences in World War 2 and all of this.
- 1:42:08The brothers thing and Rattle ONS the father and all that
- 1:42:12stuff. No.
- 1:42:13I'm so glad we didn't get any of that would have been no.
- 1:42:15I mean what we got it's, it's obviously there are plot issues
- 1:42:22probably and it's not perfect perfect, but I'm so glad that
- 1:42:25we've got what we got. So thank you very much Philip
- 1:42:28Seagal. I'd rather have something with
- 1:42:30plot issues that is this delirious than something that
- 1:42:34doesn't have plot issues. Imagine all that like.
- 1:42:36Heaven sent. But it's very dull and dreary
- 1:42:39and boring to watch, and you're starting off for suit.
- 1:42:42This is a pilot episode. It it can't go deep into
- 1:42:45mythology just straight away. That's not what it's supposed to
- 1:42:48do. It's not what it should do.
- 1:42:50It's just get viewers in and interested.
- 1:42:54My second thing is Jeffrey Sachs's direction.
- 1:42:56I actually think this is one of the most over directed Doctor
- 1:42:59Who stories of all time. He is making his presence aware
- 1:43:03in. Every.
- 1:43:04Single scene, but within it you've got some of the most
- 1:43:08captivating imagery. And direction, camera angles and
- 1:43:12set pieces you're ever going to see in a Doctor Who.
- 1:43:15One thing everybody said when they came away from this was how
- 1:43:19amazing it looked. And it still looks amazing
- 1:43:22today. It looks so much, it looks very
- 1:43:2490s, but it is visually impressive.
- 1:43:27What I'm going to say the set design, especially the TARDIS
- 1:43:30console, because that is just the vision of that.
- 1:43:34I mean, they could have gone a bit old school, they could have
- 1:43:36had all these round things on the wall, they could have leaned
- 1:43:39into all of that, but they did something, you know, different.
- 1:43:42It fits in with that Byron esque, Edwardian style that I've
- 1:43:46got the Doctor in that's very much just surrounded by.
- 1:43:50It's just just the detail that they've put into it and that the
- 1:43:53console and just that colour blue, the the TV movie blue,
- 1:43:57isn't it? Doesn't it?
- 1:43:58It really does. That's the colour of this film.
- 1:44:01The last thing I'm going to say is not the exposition, but
- 1:44:05Matthew Jacobs. Very witty, bouncy dialogue
- 1:44:10throughout this There. You and me spent this whole
- 1:44:13thing just shouting a lot, mostly me shouting out lines all
- 1:44:16the way through. It's very, very memorable and I
- 1:44:18know we said there's a lot of sort of stage direction and not
- 1:44:21a lot of dialogue. There is a lot of dialogue.
- 1:44:23It comes in sort of quick, successive scenes.
- 1:44:26It reminds me of Rusty Davis and Steven Moffett at their best.
- 1:44:30Lots of quick fire dialogue going back and forth.
- 1:44:33Half of it don't matter if it makes sense.
- 1:44:35It's got a flow and an energy and a wit to it, and it's just
- 1:44:39gorgeous. I think Matthew Jacobs, who we
- 1:44:42saw recently in The Who Am I? Documentary, it's very, very
- 1:44:45underrated. I think people criticize him too
- 1:44:47much for his plot and they don't praise him enough for his
- 1:44:50dialogue. And so as we end this delirious
- 1:44:562 hour commentary on the midpoint of Doctor Who, you see
- 1:44:59I've brought out Unearthly Child the beginning of the week.
- 1:45:02Now I'm bringing out TV movie right in the middle.
- 1:45:05And then, well, it is technically.
- 1:45:07There's fourteen more series after this 15.
- 1:45:10And then Power of the Doctors going out tomorrow.
- 1:45:13So this is anniversary week, 60th anniversary.
- 1:45:17Do you have a message for the fans of Doctor Who?
- 1:45:21No. Enjoy it.
- 1:45:23Don't take it too seriously. Don't have a tantrum?
- 1:45:28Just enjoy it like the TV movie. Like fun.
- 1:45:31It's a party, that's all. You don't need to think too
- 1:45:35much. And.
- 1:45:37A happy anniversary to all of you.
- 1:45:41At. Home.
