- 0:57You want to know why it happened, But upgraded thinking
- 1:00knows an explanation is not a foundation.
- 1:04Here's the story. On the morning of August 26th,
- 1:08high in the Himalayas near the Nepal Tibet border, a huge mass
- 1:12of ice and rock broke loose around 17,000 feet up.
- 1:16It plunged almost a mile into the valley below.
- 1:19Scientists said it was almost impossible to forecast in time
- 1:22to protect people downstream. Water, ice, rock and debris
- 1:25surged through the the river valleys and down the Trishuli
- 1:29corridor. The toll is still being counted.
- 1:32More than 1000 people have been reported dead across Nepal and
- 1:35Tibet, and thousands are still missing.
- 1:38By that afternoon, the explaining had already started.
- 1:42That's what we do. We can't stand not knowing, so
- 1:45we reach for a reason. Once we have a reason, we feel
- 1:48steadier. But the reason is not holding us
- 1:51up. It only feels like it is.
- 1:53This response isn't new. On November 1st, 1755, it was
- 1:59All Saints Day and the churches in Lisbon were full when an
- 2:03earthquake struck, estimated near magnitude 9.
- 2:06Then a tsunami, then fires that burned for days. 10s of
- 2:10thousands were dead. Portugal's capital was
- 2:13devastated. Most of the city was gone.
- 2:16Europe's smartest people went to work explaining, Voltaire wrote,
- 2:21against easy answers to suffering.
- 2:23Rousseau wrote back that crowded 6 and seven story buildings had
- 2:26made the catastrophe worse. Preachers called it judgement.
- 2:29Philosophers argued about nature, God, evil, and human
- 2:33responsibility. But one man turned toward the
- 2:36work in front of him. They asked Portugal's chief
- 2:38minister, the Marquis of Pambal, what should be done.
- 2:43He's remembered for answering quote, bury the dead and heal
- 2:47the living. In quote you see, explanations
- 2:51don't rebuild, only rebuilding does.
- 2:54Within a day, he ordered the dead removed to reduce the
- 2:57danger of disease. He moved to restore order,
- 3:00protect food supplies and curb profiteering.
- 3:03And even as Lisbon grieved, officials began planning a safer
- 3:06city. When Lisbon was rebuilt, it used
- 3:10an internal timber framework inside masonry walls.
- 3:15They called it the pommelin cage.
- 3:17It was designed to let buildings move more safely in an
- 3:19earthquake instead of simply shattering. 28 years later, a
- 3:24major earthquake struck Calabria in southern Italy.
- 3:27Frequently repeated account says a palace built on that system
- 3:31survived when much of its town was destroyed.
- 3:35Jesus told a story about two men and two houses.
- 3:38A storm came and only one survived.
- 3:42He labeled the man who built on stone at the wise 1 he built.
- 3:45He labeled the man who built on sand foolish.
- 3:48Notice what he doesn't say. He doesn't say the wise man got
- 3:51better weather. The rain fell on both.
- 3:53The floods came on both. The winds beat on both houses.
- 3:57Same storm, different foundation.
- 4:02An explanation is sand. It shifts the moment new
- 4:05evidence comes in. A foundation is stone.
- 4:09It is what you built before you needed it, and what you do first
- 4:14when the ground moves. As a widely shared saying puts
- 4:17it, serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the
- 4:22storm. The better story to tell
- 4:24yourself is I don't need an explanation, I need a
- 4:28foundation. When you need to rebuild, don't
- 4:32focus on explanations. Bury the dead, heal the living.
- 4:36Build on solid ground. Tell me a story of solid
- 4:40foundations to from chadsmith@gmail.com Since when a
- 4:44text and asked them if you had to rebuild tomorrow, what's the
- 4:47first thing you'd do?
