- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. Everybody, Welcome to the NFL Los Angeles Newsroom.
- 0:20Speaker 1: On a Friday edition of NFL Now, I'm Patrick claibonn
- 0:23Speaker 1: and we start with what is new right Now? A
- 0:26Speaker 1: lot of discussion, especially on social media website Twitter dot com,
- 0:29Speaker 1: including on one of the principles surrounding the story from
- 0:32Speaker 1: the Athletic This is what is new right now? The
- 0:35Speaker 1: story alleging before the trade between the Broncos and the
- 0:39Speaker 1: Seahawks that Russell Wilson allegedly requested ownership to fire John
- 0:44Speaker 1: Schneider and Pete Carroll, the Super Bowl champion GM and
- 0:47Speaker 1: head coach Russ quickly taking to Twitter this morning to
- 0:51Speaker 1: refute that report, saying, I love Pete and he was
- 0:53Speaker 1: a father figure to me, and John believed in me
- 0:55Speaker 1: and drafted me as well. I never wanted them fired.
- 0:58Speaker 1: All any of us wanted was to win. I'll always
- 1:01Speaker 1: have respect for them and love for Seattle. The report.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It also chronicles some of the situations surrounding the twenty
- 1:09Speaker 1: twenty two Denver Broncos and their struggles on offense, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: four more on the Broncos. Let's bring in James pauler
- 1:15Speaker 1: Now and James there was the bringing into the head coach,
- 1:17Speaker 1: who had a good relationship with Aaron Rodgers. They wind
- 1:20Speaker 1: up going with Russell Wilson. He wants this to be
- 1:23Speaker 1: a player led team. Russ has some different strategies that
- 1:27Speaker 1: the team implemented. How did that play out for the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Broncos in twenty twenty two, Well, didn't play out very
- 1:32Speaker 1: well in terms of wins and losses. Patrick, We'll get
- 1:35Speaker 1: to that, but specifically, it's about the environment that was created,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and I think we need to make it clear that
- 1:40Speaker 1: this environment was created by general manager George Peyton and
- 1:44Speaker 1: head coach Nathaniel Hackett long before training camp even started,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and that was this that they were going to accommodate
- 1:50Speaker 1: anything Russell Wilson believed was going to make him a
- 1:54Speaker 1: better football player. They were fine with that, whether that
- 1:57Speaker 1: was having an office in the facility that was his
- 1:59Speaker 1: own to operate out of, whether it was having his
- 2:02Speaker 1: personal team at practice and they including his personal quarterback
- 2:06Speaker 1: coach Jake Keats, they were going to allow it. If
- 2:08Speaker 1: you were at training camp practices, you were going to
- 2:11Speaker 1: see his entire team there on the sideline. You were
- 2:13Speaker 1: going to see them in the facility during the week.
- 2:16Speaker 1: This was an environment that was created before the season began. Now,
- 2:21Speaker 1: that environment that was allowing a lot of leeway for
- 2:24Speaker 1: decisions to be made from Russell Wilson and his group
- 2:26Speaker 1: about what he needed to be successful spawned into the
- 2:29Speaker 1: season to where multiple coaches and players told me throughout
- 2:32Speaker 1: the year that each and every week the offensive identity changed,
- 2:37Speaker 1: even within games, the offensive identity continue to change, and
- 2:40Speaker 1: is that we were trying to accommodate all parties involved
- 2:44Speaker 1: and even coaches, even players. Patrick I will say said
- 2:47Speaker 1: there was a lot of blame to be passed around
- 2:50Speaker 1: throughout the organization for the way things were going. Nobody
- 2:53Speaker 1: was questioning the effort Russell Wilson was putting in. Nobody
- 2:56Speaker 1: was questioning the effort everyone was putting in. It was
- 2:57Speaker 1: just very unorganized because of the environment that was created.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Now pushing this forward, Sean Payton has made it very
- 3:05Speaker 1: clear on multiple occasions that this is not going to
- 3:07Speaker 1: be the environment that he is going to have as
- 3:10Speaker 1: the new head coach of the Denver Broncos. That Russell
- 3:12Speaker 1: Wilson's group is not going to be in the building
- 3:14Speaker 1: as they weren't at the end of the regular season.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Actually in the twenty twenty two year, and to my understanding,
- 3:20Speaker 1: Russell Wilson has approached Sean Payton several times telling him
- 3:22Speaker 1: he wants to be coached hard. So it appears that
- 3:25Speaker 1: maybe both parties believe a new environment is probably best
- 3:28Speaker 1: for the Denver Broncos moving forward. Yeah, certainly some of
- 3:30Speaker 1: the best outfitsive performances came at the end, not that
- 3:33Speaker 1: there was that much more to improve on. Now they've
- 3:37Speaker 1: got a lot of success that but yeah, early on,
- 3:39Speaker 1: but substantially better towards the end of the season. And
- 3:42Speaker 1: we have had no comment from both the Seahawks and
- 3:45Speaker 1: the Broncos on this story thus far, but we do
- 3:47Speaker 1: get a little insight in the twenty twenty two Broncos
- 3:49Speaker 1: and we'll get another chance to talk to James Palmers. Well,
- 3:51Speaker 1: continue here on NFL. Now, let's get a look at
- 3:54Speaker 1: some other news that's new right now, of course, the
- 3:57Speaker 1: operative part of news. We've got Mike Garofolo and Tom
- 4:00Speaker 1: Pellicero with us. Let's talk about some quarterbacks. Mike, you
- 4:03Speaker 1: first up on Daniel Jones and the Giants. What's the
- 4:06Speaker 1: latest there. Well, Patrick, a lot of talk about Daniel
- 4:10Speaker 1: Jones and a reported or rumored asking price of forty
- 4:14Speaker 1: five million dollars per season that a lot of people
- 4:17Speaker 1: are saying, you gotta be kidding me with that number. Well, listen,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I frankly, I don't care about that number. I don't.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I mean, I go back to we're just talking about
- 4:24Speaker 1: Russell Wilson. Years ago, he and his agent proposed to
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Seahawks thirty million dollars per year on a multi
- 4:31Speaker 1: year deal. The next day, which was the deadline to
- 4:33Speaker 1: do a deal, they agreed to twenty one point nine.
- 4:35Speaker 1: So you can ask for whoever you want to ask
- 4:37Speaker 1: for up until the point where a decision has to
- 4:39Speaker 1: be made. Now, look that deadline for both sides here.
- 4:42Speaker 1: The first one is going to be March seventh. That's
- 4:45Speaker 1: the point at which the Giants need to decide if
- 4:47Speaker 1: they want to use the franchise tag on Daniel Jones.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So let's say at that point he's asking for forty
- 4:51Speaker 1: five million, the Giants are not going to go that high.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It's a franchise tag for Daniel Jones. Now, that's going
- 4:56Speaker 1: to give him six days before the negotiating window opens.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Up for all free agents to do a long term
- 5:02Speaker 1: deal with Daniel Jones, which is gonna make it much
- 5:03Speaker 1: easier on the salary recap to bring back and bring
- 5:07Speaker 1: in other players, including say Quon Barkley. So, Tom, I
- 5:10Speaker 1: think we're going to get to a point where Daniel
- 5:12Speaker 1: Jones is gonna look at this and say, well, if
- 5:14Speaker 1: I play on the tag, that's going to hurt my
- 5:16Speaker 1: team's chances of bringing in some other players and surrounding
- 5:19Speaker 1: me with talent and keeping say Quon here. So do
- 5:22Speaker 1: I want to maybe come down a little bit on
- 5:23Speaker 1: that number and get a deal done which is going
- 5:25Speaker 1: to make it easier for all parties. I think that's
- 5:27Speaker 1: where we're headed here. Some people have asked, Mike, would
- 5:32Speaker 1: the Giants rather use the franchise tag on Daniel Jones
- 5:34Speaker 1: or say Quon Barkley. The answer is they'd rather not
- 5:37Speaker 1: tag anybody. Their plan all along has been to try
- 5:39Speaker 1: to get multiyear deals done with both these guys. Now,
- 5:42Speaker 1: if you only get one done, it makes sense that
- 5:45Speaker 1: the priority would be Daniel Jones, just because it's a
- 5:47Speaker 1: bigger contract, and as you mentioned, a bigger franchise tag
- 5:50Speaker 1: number over thirty two million versus about ten million dollars
- 5:53Speaker 1: for say Quon Barkley. But remember the Giants did make
- 5:56Speaker 1: a run trying to get a deal done with Barkley
- 5:58Speaker 1: back in the fall. That is evidence that they have
- 6:00Speaker 1: been trying to make that happen on the running back
- 6:03Speaker 1: front as well. For Daniel Jones, he recently switched agents
- 6:06Speaker 1: trying to get his number. He went to Athletes First,
- 6:09Speaker 1: which happens to be the same agency that also represented
- 6:11Speaker 1: Dak Prescott when he got tagged, played a season, ended
- 6:15Speaker 1: up getting tagged again, signed a multi year deal. There's
- 6:17Speaker 1: different ways that you can go about this, but everybody
- 6:20Speaker 1: involved understands that there are advantages to getting a deal
- 6:24Speaker 1: done with Daniel Jones prior to March seventh, and we'll
- 6:26Speaker 1: see if they can get it done. Patrick, Now, a
- 6:28Speaker 1: lot of time left in terms of a negotiation. We'll see.
- 6:30Speaker 1: But like Mike numbers that are kind of out of
- 6:33Speaker 1: thin air, why would we care about that. We only
- 6:36Speaker 1: care about what the actual offers are and what the
- 6:38Speaker 1: player wants. Michel, Let's talk about a player who went
- 6:42Speaker 1: to a Super Bowl champion, pretty successful guy, Bobby Wagner.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Now he's going to be looking for another spot. He
- 6:48Speaker 1: is the Rams and Bobby Wagner yesterday agreeing to mutually
- 6:52Speaker 1: part ways. And this was a mutual parting. I know
- 6:54Speaker 1: we say that a lot and sometimes we don't necessarily
- 6:56Speaker 1: mean it. In this case, we mean it. Wagner gonna
- 6:59Speaker 1: move on, Gonna be a free agent at the start
- 7:01Speaker 1: of the league year on March fifteenth. That's important because
- 7:04Speaker 1: a lot of times players released right now can now
- 7:06Speaker 1: start negotiating with other teams. That's not going to be
- 7:08Speaker 1: the case with Wagner. It has to do with guaranteed money.
- 7:12Speaker 1: He's still owed three point five million from the Rams
- 7:14Speaker 1: moving forward, and that way distrust me. He's not a
- 7:17Speaker 1: free agent to negotiate with other teams until March fifteenth.
- 7:20Speaker 1: But he's going to be free and he's going to
- 7:21Speaker 1: join a free agent class in which he could be
- 7:24Speaker 1: at the head of that class the linebacker position. One
- 7:26Speaker 1: hundred and forty tackles last season, a career high six sacks,
- 7:29Speaker 1: another All Pro selection. Bobby Wagner still has good football
- 7:33Speaker 1: left and that football is going to be played for
- 7:35Speaker 1: someone other than the Rams. Very productive player as he's
- 7:38Speaker 1: been for most of his career, multiple time All Pro,
- 7:41Speaker 1: another guy who's a veteran defender Tom the honey Badger
- 7:45Speaker 1: Tyron Matthew changing his contract around a little bit with
- 7:48Speaker 1: the Saints. The Saints frequently in this situation. Is this
- 7:51Speaker 1: different than it normally? Is? It is not Patrick. This
- 7:55Speaker 1: has kind of been an annual exercise for about a
- 7:58Speaker 1: decade for the New Orleans Saints, who are always up
- 8:00Speaker 1: against it in terms of the salary calf. They restructured
- 8:04Speaker 1: Tyron matthews deal today. They basically took his base salary
- 8:07Speaker 1: converted into a roster bonus that will be paid out
- 8:10Speaker 1: if he's stolen the roster the fifth day of the
- 8:12Speaker 1: league year coming up next month. They've also done a
- 8:15Speaker 1: salary conversion on Eric McCoy's contract recently. They did one
- 8:18Speaker 1: on Ryan Ramcheck's contract recently. Those three alone cleared about
- 8:22Speaker 1: twenty three million dollars in cap space, but the Saints
- 8:24Speaker 1: entered this process over seventy million dollars over next year's cap. Now,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I know that the Saints are the prime example where
- 8:31Speaker 1: people say the cap is a myth. No, the cap
- 8:34Speaker 1: is real. Every dollar you spend hits the cap. Eventually.
- 8:38Speaker 1: What the Saints have done more than any other team
- 8:40Speaker 1: is test the bounds of how many times you can
- 8:43Speaker 1: push that money out into the future, and as long
- 8:45Speaker 1: as there's not a global pandemic, they seem to feel
- 8:49Speaker 1: like they can continue to do this as long as
- 8:51Speaker 1: they have to to keep their core, their team intact. Yeah,
- 8:53Speaker 1: the pandemic, the heat, death of the universe. As long
- 8:56Speaker 1: as time continues to exist, the Saints insist that the
- 9:00Speaker 1: future as to the universe, They're off the hook on
- 9:03Speaker 1: that one. Okay, well we'll see. Tom is merely a
- 9:06Speaker 1: construct there. The salary cap is a thing. Yeah, just
- 9:09Speaker 1: a figment of our imagination. Thanks to our insiders. Micur
- 9:12Speaker 1: follow Tom Peli sero. We'll keep going here. As last week,
- 9:17Speaker 1: new Cardinals head coach John Dannon said that they had
- 9:21Speaker 1: a particular vision for who he wanted as an offensive coordinator.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Well they got it. Drew pets Thing comes over. The
- 9:27Speaker 1: former Brown's quarterback coach now in Arizona, and like his
- 9:31Speaker 1: new boss, had a lot of positive things to say
- 9:34Speaker 1: about Kyler Murray. I think he's a really talented player.
- 9:38Speaker 1: That was one of the appealing things about this job
- 9:41Speaker 1: to me was being able to work with a quarterback
- 9:43Speaker 1: of his caliber. But it's about the entire offense and
- 9:46Speaker 1: ultimately the entire team. It's not going to be just
- 9:49Speaker 1: about him. He knows that. I think Jonathan knows that.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I think as an organization, we will preach that we
- 9:56Speaker 1: need to build a great offense and a great defense
- 9:58Speaker 1: and a great special team's unit to go out and
- 10:00Speaker 1: be successful. I think that's going to be really the
- 10:02Speaker 1: focus as we head into the season. Well, it's better
- 10:06Speaker 1: to have Kyler Murray than to not have Kyler Murray,
- 10:09Speaker 1: especially as indicated late in the twenty twenty two season
- 10:12Speaker 1: when the Carbinal saw their points per game, yards per game,
- 10:15Speaker 1: rush yards per game, and giveaways per game all change
- 10:19Speaker 1: to the negative side without Kyler Murray. And again, Kyler
- 10:22Speaker 1: Murray had that ACL injury in Week fourteen, so it
- 10:26Speaker 1: maybe a while before Number one is back on the
- 10:29Speaker 1: field for the Arizona Cardinals. We've got James Palmer back
- 10:32Speaker 1: with us to discuss these Cardinals and the road ahead,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and James, it's it's Drew Petson. Ganna said he had
- 10:39Speaker 1: a specific vision. What is that vision going to do
- 10:42Speaker 1: for the Cardinals? Well, Patrick, Drew Petson can say it's
- 10:46Speaker 1: all about special teams. The other fifty two guys on
- 10:48Speaker 1: the roster. This is about Kyler Murray and that was
- 10:50Speaker 1: a big part of his interview with Jonathan Gannon was
- 10:53Speaker 1: what is your vision working with Kyler? And you heard
- 10:55Speaker 1: him rave about him. Obviously, the skill set is there.
- 10:58Speaker 1: The start now is the relationship that he starts building
- 11:00Speaker 1: with Kyler Murray. We know Cliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray's relationship. Reportedly,
- 11:04Speaker 1: all the things that have been said about the problems
- 11:06Speaker 1: that that possibly caused the team to have this past
- 11:08Speaker 1: season in the departure of Kingsbury. Now Drew Petsing nets
- 11:12Speaker 1: to an opportunity while Tyler Murray is recovering from that
- 11:16Speaker 1: acl injury, to spend most of their time, almost all
- 11:19Speaker 1: of it in the classroom, going over quizzes, question and answers,
- 11:23Speaker 1: film study, all this stuff to go over the mental
- 11:25Speaker 1: side of this new offensive scheme that he's going to
- 11:27Speaker 1: bring in for his quarterback. Now the two have already spoken,
- 11:30Speaker 1: and Petsing believes that Kyler has been very engaged, even
- 11:33Speaker 1: though they're not allowed to talk about football just yet.
- 11:35Speaker 1: But the other aspect of it is that Petsing is
- 11:38Speaker 1: coming from a situation that is very similar to the
- 11:40Speaker 1: one that he's walking into and that's that your starting quarterback,
- 11:43Speaker 1: your franchise quarterback, is not going to be there for
- 11:45Speaker 1: the first half of the year. When he was the
- 11:47Speaker 1: Browns quarterback coach, his job was to make sure that
- 11:50Speaker 1: he got Jacobi Bursett ready to be the interim starter
- 11:53Speaker 1: while Deshaun Watson was suspended for the first eleven games
- 11:55Speaker 1: of the season, and at the same time make sure
- 11:58Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson is also getting ready to be the starter
- 12:01Speaker 1: of the second half and for the future. So maybe
- 12:03Speaker 1: that experience does help him trick in some capacity, because
- 12:06Speaker 1: it's a very similar one. When Kyler may not hit
- 12:09Speaker 1: the field till mid season. Yeah, they'll have some time
- 12:11Speaker 1: to wait for Kyler's return, but the clock is ticking
- 12:13Speaker 1: on the rest of the off season with the Combine
- 12:16Speaker 1: and the draft approaching briskly for the new look Arizona Cardinals.
- 12:19Speaker 1: James Palmer on the state of the Cardinals More to come,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and speaking of the twenty twenty three NFL Scouting Combine.

- 12:43Speaker 1: The HBCU Legacy Bowl coming up tomorrow on NFL Network.
- 12:47Speaker 1: We're going alive to the Convention Center in New Orleans.
- 12:50Speaker 1: We're a look at what these guys are doing today.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Next on NFL Now, nothing to stop me. What a
- 12:59Speaker 1: fantastic week in New Orleans as we are set for
- 13:02Speaker 1: the HBCU Legacy Bowl Sat Day at four pm Eastern
- 13:06Speaker 1: tom Right here on NFL Network, the second annual HBCU
- 13:11Speaker 1: Legacy Bowls. We showcase the best players from historically black
- 13:15Speaker 1: colleges and universities. Let's get down to the Convention Center
- 13:19Speaker 1: in New Orleans as Sherry Burris and Bucky Brooks have
- 13:22Speaker 1: a guest. Jason Right, the President of the commander is
- 13:24Speaker 1: good afternoon to you guys. Hey guys, well, thank you
- 13:28Speaker 1: so much. We are here at the Career Fear ahead
- 13:30Speaker 1: of the HBCU Legacy Bowl. Bucky Brooks here with me,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and as you said it, the President of the Washington Commanders,
- 13:36Speaker 1: Jason Right. We so appreciate you being here with us.
- 13:38Speaker 1: It's my pleasure to be here. So we are here
- 13:40Speaker 1: at the career Fair and there are over fifteen hundred
- 13:43Speaker 1: students from forty nine different HBCUs here behind us. Right
- 13:47Speaker 1: now we have Alabama State, Jackson's eight and all Corn
- 13:50Speaker 1: students here with us. Guys, it is an incredible week.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I mean, they're over one hundred employers here, twelve of
- 13:58Speaker 1: them NFL teams six hour distance. They had kids come in.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I walked around and this is an incredible Jason, I
- 14:05Speaker 1: want to get your thoughts. What did you think when
- 14:07Speaker 1: you got here? I mean I was blown away. I
- 14:09Speaker 1: heard the growth of this from the last year to
- 14:11Speaker 1: this year is massive, and you know, I could see
- 14:13Speaker 1: this blowing up even more because this is a chance
- 14:16Speaker 1: for talent that doesn't always get the center stage with
- 14:19Speaker 1: us that we need desperately to get the spotlight. And
- 14:23Speaker 1: for us, it was a big commitment for us. We've
- 14:25Speaker 1: had a major HBCU internship program for a couple of
- 14:28Speaker 1: years now. Is one of my big priorities when I joined,
- 14:31Speaker 1: and it's been nothing but great for us. It's helped
- 14:33Speaker 1: us accelerate sales. We were third in the league in
- 14:36Speaker 1: attendance growth this year, and a lot of that was
- 14:38Speaker 1: because of the black talent that we brought into our salesforce.
- 14:41Speaker 1: So I'm excited about this and part of those fifteen
- 14:44Speaker 1: hundred students. Here are some of the athletes playing in
- 14:46Speaker 1: the game this weekend. Let's hear what they think. Mary.
- 14:50Speaker 1: You don't want to close any doors, you know what
- 14:51Speaker 1: I'm saying, thank you for the opportunity to even be here.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Don't wanted to show off anything over your mind and
- 14:56Speaker 1: be blessed for opportunities talk to people, I'm saying, learned
- 14:59Speaker 1: about some great opportunities and furden in my education as well.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I wanted to use every resource available to You know,
- 15:07Speaker 1: football is not going to be forever, so you know
- 15:09Speaker 1: you got to have a backup plan as well as
- 15:12Speaker 1: another another way to provide for your family at the
- 15:15Speaker 1: end of the day. So I think this is a
- 15:16Speaker 1: great experience the career fair especially you know Jason and
- 15:23Speaker 1: thinking about that. What he was saying is the backup
- 15:26Speaker 1: playing in the next step. And so you made this
- 15:29Speaker 1: step from the gritterin to the boardroom. How were you
- 15:32Speaker 1: able to pull off that process? Well, I think one
- 15:34Speaker 1: thing that helped me is that I got fired a
- 15:36Speaker 1: lot on the league. I got cut nine times in
- 15:40Speaker 1: my first year and a half. You know, yeah, I
- 15:43Speaker 1: what the falcons I was. You know, I got cut.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I was living out of an extended state motel. Then
- 15:47Speaker 1: I ran out of money, was living with my aunt uncle,
- 15:49Speaker 1: just grinding, trying to make it. And when that happens,
- 15:52Speaker 1: the aphorism of the NFL standing for not for long
- 15:54Speaker 1: really hits home. So I always knew I had to
- 15:57Speaker 1: think about what was next. And I knew that my
- 15:59Speaker 1: brain would carry me further than my legs. Even though
- 16:01Speaker 1: I thought I was a great running back and I
- 16:02Speaker 1: ended up having a good career, I knew my brain
- 16:04Speaker 1: would carry me further. So I always had something in mind.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I was always learning. I was always picking up new skills,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and that eventually helped me lead to a career that
- 16:13Speaker 1: led to this. We saw the Washington Scouts here both
- 16:16Speaker 1: days at practice. Doug Williams obviously a huge part of
- 16:18Speaker 1: the Legacy Bowl and the Commander's franchise. Why for you
- 16:21Speaker 1: is it important to be able to showcase these guys
- 16:24Speaker 1: in the Legacy Bowl tomorrow and give the attention they deserve. Yeah, Well,
- 16:27Speaker 1: I think HBCUs have played such a critical role in
- 16:31Speaker 1: the upward mobility of Black America for decades. It's still
- 16:34Speaker 1: the source of the black middle class and black economic power.
- 16:37Speaker 1: It's still the engine for that. And when our athletes
- 16:41Speaker 1: and when our young men and women choose to go
- 16:43Speaker 1: to an HBCU, they're investing in a legacy that's important
- 16:45Speaker 1: for all of us. At some times, however, there had
- 16:48Speaker 1: been a downside to that, not getting the same visibility
- 16:50Speaker 1: that athletes get going to pwis like myself and others,
- 16:55Speaker 1: And so this is an opportunity to sort of level
- 16:57Speaker 1: that playing field and give back to those who choose
- 17:00Speaker 1: who chose to go to HBCUs with their talent and
- 17:03Speaker 1: invest in them in a way that's important for the
- 17:04Speaker 1: whole community so that we can get those folks forward
- 17:07Speaker 1: into the league as well. You know, you think about opportunities.
- 17:10Speaker 1: You guys have a lot of buzz around the franchise
- 17:12Speaker 1: because you afford an opportunity to Eric BN and B
- 17:14Speaker 1: to come over as the offensive coordinator. What has the
- 17:17Speaker 1: reaction been like, say eb has joined the team, Man,
- 17:20Speaker 1: I'm fired up. I think it speaks a lot to
- 17:24Speaker 1: what Ron Ron Rivera, our head coach, has built over
- 17:26Speaker 1: the last three years for him. I mean, he inherited
- 17:29Speaker 1: something that needed a major turnaround, need to be torn
- 17:31Speaker 1: down to its stilts and built back up as an
- 17:33Speaker 1: organization from a culture and ways of working standpoint, the
- 17:35Speaker 1: same thing I had to do on the business side
- 17:37Speaker 1: weren't in a good spot. But it speaks to what
- 17:39Speaker 1: Ron has built on the football side of the house,
- 17:42Speaker 1: the talent on the roster as well as the culture
- 17:44Speaker 1: and ways of working that you can attract what I
- 17:46Speaker 1: believe is the best offensive coordinator in the NFL. You're
- 17:50Speaker 1: able to attract a man this one two Super Bowls
- 17:52Speaker 1: in the last four years. You're able to attract a
- 17:54Speaker 1: man of gravitas who is going to be a head
- 17:56Speaker 1: coach one day, hopefully sooner than later, after he helps
- 18:00Speaker 1: us win a couple of So I think it speaks
- 18:04Speaker 1: to what Ron has and how close we are to
- 18:06Speaker 1: bring another Lombardi Trophy back to Washington. We mish you
- 18:09Speaker 1: guys all the luck this season, and again, thank you
- 18:10Speaker 1: so much for being here in your commitment to the
- 18:12Speaker 1: HbCO So Patrick, well send this back to you. Appreciate that. Guys.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Looking forward to the game again, the only game exclusively
- 18:19Speaker 1: for draft eligible players from historically black colleges, and universities
- 18:22Speaker 1: who will shine in the Big Easy The second annual
- 18:25Speaker 1: HBCU Legacy Bowl, Live from New Orleans, Saturday, four pm
- 18:29Speaker 1: Eastern only on NFL Network. Oh, still some confetti in
- 18:36Speaker 1: the streets of Kansas City. A super Bowl champion Andrew
- 18:39Speaker 1: Wiley joining us Now, Andrew, an incredible parade, an incredible
- 18:44Speaker 1: performance in the super Bowl. You had the injury in
- 18:47Speaker 1: the first Super Bowl. How does this one feel in
- 18:50Speaker 1: comparison to your last one? Man? You know, this one
- 18:54Speaker 1: it means the world to us, you know, and you know,
- 18:56Speaker 1: third trip to the Super Bowl means a ton of me,
- 18:59Speaker 1: especially how the last one went down, didn't didn't gonna
- 19:01Speaker 1: give our best shot there, and so this one is.
- 19:04Speaker 1: This one's really sweet. And you guys experienced now with
- 19:07Speaker 1: the post Super Bowl, especially the media circuit. For Patrick,
- 19:11Speaker 1: he goes on a talk show and he says that
- 19:13Speaker 1: there was a play for you. Can you tell us?
- 19:16Speaker 1: And did you have a celebration? Yeah, man, I was
- 19:20Speaker 1: just gonna celebrate with the guys. Honestly, I didn't have
- 19:22Speaker 1: anything to an elaborate plan, but yeah, I'm a big
- 19:25Speaker 1: card collector. So we had a we had a little
- 19:27Speaker 1: Pokemon play. Got to catch them all where I was.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I was the look on that one, and unfortunately they
- 19:33Speaker 1: covered me like a glove on that. But so hopefully
- 19:36Speaker 1: next time we'll get another shot at it. Well, you
- 19:39Speaker 1: gotta I gotta ask Andrew, Now, what's your starter? You're
- 19:43Speaker 1: talking about the cards, like, what are you starting Gen one?
- 19:45Speaker 1: Where are you going charm end or where we got? Yeah? Man, Yeah,
- 19:49Speaker 1: so we throw it back with the Pokemon cards. We
- 19:52Speaker 1: do a little bit of the bended stuff, the first
- 19:53Speaker 1: edition stuff. But I've been into it for about three
- 19:56Speaker 1: or four years now, you know, just just like I
- 19:59Speaker 1: was when I was a kid man. So it's been
- 20:00Speaker 1: a lot of fun, awesome stuff. That the Eagles defense
- 20:03Speaker 1: a lot had more sacks than anybody didn't ca it's
- 20:05Speaker 1: a single sack against you guys are coming up leading
- 20:08Speaker 1: in of course their past rush was all the discussion.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Have you been able to go through and just look
- 20:13Speaker 1: at the performance that you guys put out there and
- 20:15Speaker 1: how did you go about accomplishing that? I mean, yeah,
- 20:19Speaker 1: we knew it, you know for the two weeks leading
- 20:21Speaker 1: up to the big game that it was gonna be uh,
- 20:23Speaker 1: you know, one or loss in the trenches. So uh,
- 20:25Speaker 1: coachree put it on our shoulders. Uh. You know, we
- 20:27Speaker 1: knew we had to have a lights out game in
- 20:30Speaker 1: order to win this thing, and that's what we set
- 20:32Speaker 1: out to do. So letus five up front. Man. We
- 20:34Speaker 1: had a fine time out there, and uh and we
- 20:36Speaker 1: got it done. Coming through on your journey to get
- 20:40Speaker 1: to this point, Andrew, so so many different obstacles, practice
- 20:44Speaker 1: squad moments. What do you say to the guys who
- 20:47Speaker 1: are in your situation, are going from team to team?
- 20:50Speaker 1: How would you phrase a little bit of motivation to
- 20:52Speaker 1: those guys? Man? Just stick to it honestly, man. You know,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and everybody's path is different. Um. You know, for me,
- 21:00Speaker 1: it took me. It took me about four teams until
- 21:02Speaker 1: I found until I found one that you know, truly
- 21:04Speaker 1: gave me a shot and believed in me. Um. So
- 21:07Speaker 1: I got nothing but love for bread beach Man, just
- 21:09Speaker 1: giving me a chance. But just stick it out, man,
- 21:11Speaker 1: stick to the plan, continue to work hard. Just stick
- 21:14Speaker 1: to the fundamentals man. And and uh, you know, and
- 21:17Speaker 1: it'll workout for you. And so what are those fundamentals
- 21:19Speaker 1: for you at this point as we near free agency?
- 21:22Speaker 1: How is this process playing out for you? Yeah? So
- 21:26Speaker 1: just work ethic, man, That's been That's been my main
- 21:28Speaker 1: thing that you know, I developed in college and just
- 21:31Speaker 1: kept going through it. Man. And honestly, I just have
- 21:33Speaker 1: so much fun playing this game and doing everything that
- 21:37Speaker 1: comes with it. UM love being a part of the
- 21:39Speaker 1: locker room culture. I love getting after in the weight
- 21:41Speaker 1: room and then and then having fun out there. I
- 21:43Speaker 1: practice so um just sound great. We work ethic and
- 21:45Speaker 1: just truly loving what you do. It makes a lot
- 21:47Speaker 1: of difference. And we got to see one of your
- 21:48Speaker 1: former coaches who loves what he does get his introduction
- 21:52Speaker 1: for the Washington Commanders. What are the Commanders getting? And
- 21:54Speaker 1: Eric b enemy Man, they're a getting one fired up
- 21:58Speaker 1: oc man. Ebe is just an incredible guy, a true
- 22:03Speaker 1: student of the game. He's gonna get you guys fired up,
- 22:06Speaker 1: no doubt. So you getting one hell of a coach,
- 22:08Speaker 1: would you be? No doubt? Andrew, looking at the tape
- 22:10Speaker 1: of the Super Bowl, I have to ask so many
- 22:12Speaker 1: guys slipping. We saw Patrick slip. Maybe you had some
- 22:16Speaker 1: issues with the turf you because it's a championship. Do
- 22:20Speaker 1: you remember the turf? Finally it wasn't frustrating. How do
- 22:23Speaker 1: you feel about it? After the fact. Uh yeah, man,
- 22:26Speaker 1: I think everyone went down to time or two. Um,
- 22:28Speaker 1: you know, I don't think it affected me as much.
- 22:30Speaker 1: But you know, you know, even close to the end
- 22:33Speaker 1: of the game when when we had Jed run to
- 22:36Speaker 1: the one yard line and taking knee to Brent some
- 22:38Speaker 1: time off the clock, I was supposed to pull on
- 22:39Speaker 1: that play, and uh, and i'd pull. I left what
- 22:42Speaker 1: went down, and I just looked up and had to
- 22:43Speaker 1: watch the play. So you know, there's a few few
- 22:47Speaker 1: times where for where we went down, but um, well,
- 22:50Speaker 1: you know, we just had to stick it out and
- 22:51Speaker 1: make it happen and you and you did just that,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and you got another Super Bowl ring. Looking forward to
- 22:55Speaker 1: getting you uh that ring and seeing all those because
- 22:58Speaker 1: there's still plenty of time to celebrate Kansas City's second
- 23:01Speaker 1: Super Bowl in the past four years. Thanks for coming on,
- 23:03Speaker 1: Super Bowl Champion, Andrew Wild, Thank you Mann, Thank you
- 23:06Speaker 1: guys for having me. They appreciate it, and good luck.
- 23:09Speaker 1: As free agency approaches and folks also approaching the twenty
- 23:13Speaker 1: twenty three NFL scouting combine. On March second, we're gonna
- 23:18Speaker 1: look at the defensive line and the linebackers. Then March third,
- 23:21Speaker 1: how much speak, and the defensive backs put out their
- 23:24Speaker 1: fourth the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends, and we'll
- 23:26Speaker 1: wrap things up with the offensive line and the running backs.
- 23:30Speaker 1: March fifth, one pm Eastern. All of the twenty twenty
- 23:32Speaker 1: three NFL scouting combine presented by Noble, available right here
- 23:37Speaker 1: on NFL Network. Daniel Jeremiah's mock draft two point zero
- 23:42Speaker 1: has C. J. Stroud going number four overall, the quarterback
- 23:48Speaker 1: of the Ohio State Buckeyes, as that would be a
- 23:52Speaker 1: pick by the Indianapolis Colts, who are right there at four.
- 23:56Speaker 1: As we look at the Colts available free agents, there's
- 24:02Speaker 1: there's some guys that the Colts might want to bring brat.
- 24:05Speaker 1: As we bring in James Palmer to discuss the state
- 24:07Speaker 1: of the twenty twenty three Colts, how do they approach
- 24:09Speaker 1: this offseason with the draft and the combined approaching James Patrick,
- 24:13Speaker 1: you sall right there CJ. Strout throwing the football going
- 24:16Speaker 1: quarterback at number four. There's no certainties in life, but
- 24:20Speaker 1: it seems like a certainty that this is the move
- 24:22Speaker 1: the Colts are going to do with getting a new
- 24:25Speaker 1: franchise quarterback. Now, is that happening at number four? Owner
- 24:29Speaker 1: Jim Ursey did hit and say, when we dig in
- 24:32Speaker 1: deep into this, do you stay put where you're at?
- 24:34Speaker 1: Do you move up? Remember they've selected quarterback number one
- 24:38Speaker 1: overall twice with Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck. Those were
- 24:41Speaker 1: surefire slam dunk guys. Now, if you do feel like
- 24:44Speaker 1: one of these quarterbacks is a surefire slam dunk, head
- 24:48Speaker 1: shoulders above the rest. General manager Chris Ballard did say,
- 24:51Speaker 1: you move heaven and Earth to go up and try
- 24:53Speaker 1: to get that player. Jim Ursey kind of hinted that
- 24:57Speaker 1: Bryce Young from Alabama might be the guy that would
- 25:00Speaker 1: fit that mold, and he has the three traits that
- 25:02Speaker 1: new head coach Shane Styke and Patrick believes are the
- 25:05Speaker 1: most important. That's accuracy, decision making, the ability to create.
- 25:08Speaker 1: But the other aspect of it that they're evaluating all
- 25:11Speaker 1: of these quarterbacks heavily in is how they are obsessed
- 25:14Speaker 1: with their craft. That's what's most important to Shane and Steken,
- 25:17Speaker 1: as he saw that with Jalen Hurtz and Justin Herbert
- 25:20Speaker 1: and Philip Rivers, all quarterbacks he's worked with, and all
- 25:23Speaker 1: quarterbacks that have thrived under Shane Stekin. Yeah, a lot
- 25:26Speaker 1: to keep track of. And I guess the question for
- 25:28Speaker 1: the Colts and the Texans fans and the Bears fans,
- 25:31Speaker 1: the Colts and the Texans agree on the quarterback and
- 25:34Speaker 1: if they do, which one is it going to be?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Is a lot to look ahead to as we come
- 25:39Speaker 1: up to the draft. But let's talk a little bit
- 25:41Speaker 1: more about the construction of this team. The notable free
- 25:44Speaker 1: agents include Paris Campbell, a couple of guys on the
- 25:47Speaker 1: offensive line that was crushing just a couple of years ago.
- 25:50Speaker 1: On the defensive Sidionick and Cockway, Bobby Durriki, as well
- 25:53Speaker 1: as Rodney McCleod James. How are the Colts gonna go
- 25:58Speaker 1: about free agency after a year where they tried to
- 26:01Speaker 1: make so many moves. I think the philosophy, for the
- 26:04Speaker 1: first time in a number of years Patrick has finally
- 26:07Speaker 1: changed in Indianapolis. They are no longer looking at how
- 26:10Speaker 1: do we find the best available veteran bridge quarterback to
- 26:13Speaker 1: continue to keep ourselves in contention without using the word
- 26:17Speaker 1: rebuild in any capacity. Remember it was Rivers, and it
- 26:19Speaker 1: was Wentz, and it was Matt Ryan this past season.
- 26:23Speaker 1: It now shows with the hiring of Shane Styke and
- 26:26Speaker 1: with their openness of how they're going to go after
- 26:28Speaker 1: a quarterback in the first round, that there's more concerns
- 26:31Speaker 1: about twenty twenty four and beyond than there are specifically
- 26:35Speaker 1: about twenty twenty three. And that's a different philosophy for
- 26:37Speaker 1: general manager Chris Ballard than what we've seen over the
- 26:40Speaker 1: last couple of years. But also it's building around what
- 26:43Speaker 1: that young quarterback has. And we saw on there the
- 26:45Speaker 1: offensive line. Do they move on from their center and
- 26:48Speaker 1: Ryan Kelly? Do they move on from anybody else on
- 26:51Speaker 1: that offensive line that vastly underperformed from what they were
- 26:54Speaker 1: paid this past season? You saw Yannick and Gokway's name.
- 26:57Speaker 1: They do have some pass rushers out there on the
- 26:59Speaker 1: outside that they can stick with. And then the receiving
- 27:02Speaker 1: group that could be catching footballs from this new quarterback,
- 27:06Speaker 1: could they upgrade them in some capacity? Assault Paris Campbell's
- 27:09Speaker 1: name on there is Michael Pittman Jr. A true number one,
- 27:12Speaker 1: played very well this season. I think evaluating all of
- 27:15Speaker 1: those spots around the future quarterback is going to be
- 27:18Speaker 1: something that's somewhat of a focus because the philosophy Patrick
- 27:21Speaker 1: has now changed to vision app you two Tam if
