- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us. It is the Women's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Bob Joyce Genoor, I'm alive here at the Hollow in
- 0:05Speaker 1: Manchester and Manchester Country Club.
- 0:07Speaker 3: You play here at all?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I loved I really like this golf course. It's
- 0:13Speaker 2: always in great shape. They do a phenomenal job here
- 0:18Speaker 2: because it gets you know, a lot of people play,
- 0:19Speaker 2: A lot of people play here, and a lot of
- 0:22Speaker 2: people don't know that this is not, you know, exclusively
- 0:27Speaker 2: a private club. You know, people out there in the
- 0:30Speaker 2: world like, oh, Manchester Country Club, you've got to be
- 0:32Speaker 2: a member to go there. No, you don't, you know,
- 0:34Speaker 2: whether you want to come here for dinner, you want
- 0:35Speaker 2: to play golf, you know, you know it's a gem
- 0:39Speaker 2: you I mean, anywhere you look around in Connecticut, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 2: golf course available to the general public. This nice is
- 0:47Speaker 2: very very rare to find. And you know, so it's
- 0:50Speaker 2: it's great playing here. It's a lot of fun and
- 0:52Speaker 2: people are great. Jordan de pro here is fantastic and
- 0:58Speaker 2: a lot of great members. They have great membership here.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Like Megars. They're cheap, you know, some of these guys
- 1:06Speaker 3: like Megar's.
- 1:08Speaker 1: But you know, wa is that Pat over there that
- 1:11Speaker 1: is Pat.
- 1:11Speaker 3: That is Pat right there. Yes, it is.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Pat is the woman that was in charge of the
- 1:17Speaker 2: search committee when I got hired.
- 1:19Speaker 3: So I'm here because of Pat.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Here you go, Jack, Here you go, Pat Meser McNett.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Jack Hughes is back on staff here Jack C I
- 1:28Speaker 1: was watching was we went to the Paul game. We
- 1:31Speaker 1: went at the Paul game in Chicago. That's where I saw,
- 1:33Speaker 1: I mean, was behind the bench and yeah, you're Ben
- 1:35Speaker 1: Gordon and it's like, hey, that's Jack Hughes.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I think he's yeah, yeah, I went when when I
- 1:40Speaker 2: came here to interview Pat. I had met Pat when
- 1:43Speaker 2: she was the coach at Penn State and I was
- 1:46Speaker 2: assistant coach at Saint Joseph's and we played down at
- 1:51Speaker 2: Saint Joe's one Saturday afternoon or something, I forget.
- 1:54Speaker 3: What it was.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And we had a we had a good team, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: they were really good and we had a good team
- 1:59Speaker 2: and we won. We and it was a big win,
- 2:03Speaker 2: like you know in Pennsylvania. You beat Penn State, that's
- 2:06Speaker 2: a big win, you know, because Penn State's Penn State,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and they were really good and Pat was I was
- 2:12Speaker 2: a great coach. But we won, We won that day
- 2:15Speaker 2: and and I remember going across the street there to Kavanaugh's.
- 2:20Speaker 3: It's a great bar there. They had great.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Roastby sandwiches, and we went over there and they came
- 2:25Speaker 2: over and I felt so bad because you know, it's hard.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It's hard when you go out after a game and
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, but you know, we got to know each
- 2:33Speaker 2: other pretty well. And then when this job opened, then
- 2:37Speaker 2: I came up here. One of the reasons why I
- 2:39Speaker 2: thought I had a shot, I had a chance at
- 2:42Speaker 2: getting the job was because I knew Pat and she
- 2:47Speaker 2: knew me, and I knew people that knew d and
- 2:55Speaker 2: my ad had seen at the University of Virginia was
- 2:59Speaker 2: president the n c a a A and John Toner have
- 3:02Speaker 2: been president of the n c a A. You know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: those guys all know each other and travel in the
- 3:06Speaker 2: same circles. So and and that's that's funny. A friend
- 3:14Speaker 2: of mine told me when I came up here for
- 3:16Speaker 2: the interview. They said, listen, there's going to be somebody
- 3:19Speaker 2: in that on that committee that doesn't want you to
- 3:21Speaker 2: get the job. So you need to find out who
- 3:23Speaker 2: that person is, and you need to win them over.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I said, okay, and he goes and there's going to
- 3:28Speaker 2: be somebody on that committee that wants you to get
- 3:30Speaker 2: the job, and you need to make sure that you
- 3:35Speaker 2: use them to kind of help you fight the person
- 3:38Speaker 2: that doesn't want you to get the job. It was
- 3:40Speaker 2: really interesting, you know, because I had, you know, I had,
- 3:43Speaker 2: I had not been through that kind of stuff often.
- 3:46Speaker 3: But when I came up.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Here, it was just so, it was it was perfect,
- 3:53Speaker 2: that it was so bad, that the thing that was
- 3:56Speaker 2: the only positive that was here was the people were humble,
- 4:00Speaker 2: believably good, unbelievably great, unbelievably great, and committed and passionate,
- 4:05Speaker 2: and that it was so bad that it was like
- 4:08Speaker 2: desperation too, like we need to get good, we need
- 4:10Speaker 2: to get better. We think we can be good. We
- 4:12Speaker 2: think we can be better. You know, women's soccer is good,
- 4:15Speaker 2: women's field hockey is good. This is a really good
- 4:18Speaker 2: athletic department for women's sports, and women's basketball should be good.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So I thought, you know, it was a perfect opportunity.
- 4:25Speaker 2: They wanted us to be good, and you know, we
- 4:28Speaker 2: had great people here, and you know, forty years later,
- 4:32Speaker 2: here we are.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Pat, correct me if I'm wrong. Pat also hired
- 4:37Speaker 1: Jen Right at Hartford.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Pat hired Jen Jen Rizzotti and I used to
- 4:43Speaker 2: babysit a time with Pat's son, Danny, who now runs
- 4:50Speaker 2: the Number one restaurant. He voted number one restaurant in Connecticut.
- 4:53Speaker 2: If you've ever been to the Oyster Club and Mystic
- 4:56Speaker 2: Danny Meiser, that's Pat Son. He's like one of the
- 4:59Speaker 2: one of the best chefs and restaurant owners in the
- 5:02Speaker 2: entire state of Connecticut.
- 5:03Speaker 3: So if you're ever out there, yeah, chaon, that's dinner
- 5:06Speaker 3: for us. We're there.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Injury update, how's your injured crew doing? Morgan Ice, Yanna.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yanna practiced a little bit today, so that's a good thing.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yanna practiced a little bit today.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Jenna got hit in the head with a pass. Was
- 5:27Speaker 3: it a pass or was it a shot? What was it?
- 5:33Speaker 3: What happened? Pass?
- 5:35Speaker 2: Oh, somebody threw a pass and Jenna, I guess wasn't
- 5:37Speaker 2: looking or something, or it was a bad pass. Anytime
- 5:42Speaker 2: a pass hit somebody in the head, it's.
- 5:43Speaker 1: A bad pass unless it goes through your hands.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Unless it goes through well, we've had that too. It
- 5:49Speaker 2: comes up to catch the ball and and goes like
- 5:50Speaker 2: it's and ball hits him right.
- 5:53Speaker 3: In the forehead.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I never we have it on film, thank god, so
- 5:56Speaker 2: we'll be watching it forever. But in this case, Jenna
- 5:59Speaker 2: was just trying to play defense over there and somebody
- 6:03Speaker 2: throw pass and just whacked it right in the head.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And so you know, we got Jana. Janna can't play yet.
- 6:09Speaker 2: She she she's doing non contact stuff right now.
- 6:15Speaker 3: But Jenna questionable for tomorrow.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Okay, in case you know, but I'm having dinner with
- 6:21Speaker 2: Tarta Mellow tonight, so I'm going to tell them anyway.
- 6:24Speaker 3: It's not like it's a secret.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, what about this Saint John's team, very different team
- 6:30Speaker 1: than a year ago, a lot of transfers.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Well that's what happens that I think at a lot
- 6:34Speaker 2: of programs in our in our league, I think they
- 6:37Speaker 2: they have two things that they have to do. One,
- 6:39Speaker 2: they have to keep their good players, right because a
- 6:43Speaker 2: lot of these schools don't have a lot of money
- 6:45Speaker 2: in today's world. You know, it's all about money for
- 6:48Speaker 2: some of these kids. So if you get a really
- 6:52Speaker 2: good player, like, uh, the guard of Villanova, if we
- 6:56Speaker 2: weren't in the league, she would probably be the best
- 6:58Speaker 2: player in the league. The guard of Osco. Yeah, she's
- 7:01Speaker 2: really good and she had a great freshman year. Last
- 7:04Speaker 2: year she made first team All Big East and they
- 7:07Speaker 2: were very fortunate they did the right thing.
- 7:09Speaker 3: They were able to keep her because they lost.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Lucy Olsen before that. The kid will die, which was
- 7:17Speaker 2: a really dumb move. To be honest with you, it's
- 7:20Speaker 2: really dumb right there. I mean, it's not about doing
- 7:24Speaker 2: all right. I think it's about you know, you grew
- 7:28Speaker 2: up fifteen minutes from Villanova. You know, it's your dream
- 7:30Speaker 2: come true to play at Villanova. And if there wasn't
- 7:33Speaker 2: a lot of money being offered, or if there wasn't
- 7:35Speaker 2: you know.
- 7:36Speaker 3: This.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Idea of you have to be at a certain kind
- 7:41Speaker 2: of school. You know, you got to be in the
- 7:42Speaker 2: power for school, you got to be in this in that.
- 7:45Speaker 2: So it's made it hard for a lot of the
- 7:47Speaker 2: teams in our league. So Joe, Joe knows he's got
- 7:50Speaker 2: to go out and get kids in the portal. He's
- 7:53Speaker 2: got to get you know, he's got to keep his
- 7:57Speaker 2: kids if he can. So it's a it's a constant
- 8:03Speaker 2: putting together a new team. You know, you're not going
- 8:05Speaker 2: to see Saint John's come out here in three years
- 8:09Speaker 2: and have the same team for three years in a row.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Those days are probably over all right, but they're good.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I mean they they shoot the ball grade you know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: they attack you, they run, you know. He he has
- 8:21Speaker 2: more plays than Rogers and Hammerstein. So I don't know
- 8:24Speaker 2: what that was. Jose, Oh, nobody has more plays than Jose.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I just want to clarify that, because he's got two languages.
- 8:32Speaker 2: He's got a hundred plays that he calls in English
- 8:35Speaker 2: and he's got a hundred plays that he calls in Spanish,
- 8:37Speaker 2: so I have no idea what he's talking.
- 8:39Speaker 1: All right, more with Gino. We're alive into the Hollow
- 8:41Speaker 1: in Manchester at Manchester Country Club. Back in a minute
- 8:43Speaker 1: here on Learfield.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Stay with us
