- 11:26Speaker 7: amongst all the things that he has done on a
- 11:28Speaker 7: mainstream level. I'm talking about Diljit Dosange here, but I
- 11:32Speaker 7: really feel that this Jimmy Fallon collaboration that he just
- 11:35Speaker 7: did on Monday on The Tonight Show has resonated into
- 11:39Speaker 7: the mainstream fibers of this country. It really has. You're
- 11:43Speaker 7: starting to see American people like pick up on dil

- 11:59Speaker 17: Visual from the panel of ss Rajamuli's upcoming film Varronessy
- 12:03Speaker 17: sparked online chatter after clips showed empty seats during the presentation.
- 12:07Speaker 17: While some call the turnout underwhelming and preemptive, others noted
- 12:11Speaker 17: the footage may not reflect the fall audience, as the
- 12:13Speaker 17: team including Mahesh Babu, Brianca Chopra and pritfeerraj unveiled behind
- 12:17Speaker 17: the scenes glimpses of the film's global scale vision. In
- 12:22Speaker 17: Media News, Delgito Sage selling out at BC Place Stadium
- 12:25Speaker 17: twice is a major milestone not just for him, but
- 12:28Speaker 17: for Punjabi music globally. Drawing around fifty five thousand fans
- 12:32Speaker 17: shows how far the genre has traveled beyond regional boundaries
- 12:35Speaker 17: into mainstream international arenas. In event News, chef Sudish Sandas
- 12:41Speaker 17: has made history as the first Nipali finalist for the
- 12:44Speaker 17: James Beard Award, one of the highest honors in the
- 12:47Speaker 17: food world. From working at A seven to eleven in
- 12:49Speaker 17: Virginia to co founding Dharu and launching Dapuri, his journey
- 12:53Speaker 17: is a powerful testament to passion, resilience and refining modern
- 12:57Speaker 17: South Asian cuisine.
- 12:59Speaker 1: That's it for today's word on the avenue. Until next time,
- 13:02Speaker 1: Thank you so.

- 17:02Speaker 19: change your life the most. So use this month to
- 17:06Speaker 19: reset your energy, focus on what feels aligned, and step

- 19:54Speaker 7: hundred of these unreleased DO songs out there starting to
- 19:58Speaker 7: make their ways out there. You go, there's one song
- 20:00Speaker 7: for you right there. Now, let's bring in Ed Debray
- 20:03Speaker 7: from the UN News Department, as part of our partnership
- 20:05Speaker 7: with the UN News brings us a news report every
- 20:08Speaker 7: Monday morning.
- 20:09Speaker 6: This is UN News Today with me Ed Debray. The
- 20:12Speaker 6: headlines With the Middle East war now in month three,
- 20:15Speaker 6: the UN Refugee Agency warns of the far reaching effects
- 20:19Speaker 6: on aid delivery. Meanwhile, in Mayama, the former State councilor
- 20:23Speaker 6: Ung sangsu Chi has been released from prison but will
- 20:26Speaker 6: remain under house arrest, and a new death law penalty
- 20:30Speaker 6: in Israel perpetuates racial discrimination against Palestinians. Independent rights experts
- 20:35Speaker 6: warn the Middle East crisis is having growing consequences for
- 20:41Speaker 6: global humanitarian supply chains and the delivery of aid. As
- 20:44Speaker 6: spikes and transport costs and freight disruptions are forcing UN
- 20:48Speaker 6: Refugee Agency UNHCR to adapt its delivery strategy. Heightened and
- 20:53Speaker 6: security and instability around key Gulf routes, including the Strait
- 20:57Speaker 6: of Humu's choke point, have severely up to a maritime traffic.
- 21:01Speaker 6: This has triggered a growing reliance on alternative land corridors
- 21:05Speaker 6: to distribute aid, including trucking across the Arabian Peninsula and
- 21:09Speaker 6: Turkey from Dubai. In some cases, shipments are also being
- 21:12Speaker 6: re routed across the Cape of Good Hope, increasing journey
- 21:16Speaker 6: times by up to twenty five days. The impact of
- 21:18Speaker 6: the crisis on aid delivery cost has been substantial. Here's
- 21:22Speaker 6: the UNHDR spokesperson Colotto Wolf.
- 21:25Speaker 21: While the capacity of some of our global transport providers
- 21:28Speaker 21: has dropped from ninety seven to seventy seven percent from
- 21:33Speaker 21: the start of the year, for some shipments, costs have
- 21:36Speaker 21: more than doubled, such as transfer costs for relief items
- 21:40Speaker 21: from unitsr's global stockpiles in Dubai to our Sudan and
- 21:45Speaker 21: Child operations.
- 21:46Speaker 6: However, longer journey times are having devastating impacts on those
- 21:49Speaker 6: in need, particularly Warrisome is the situation for Africa, where
- 21:53Speaker 6: there are many overlapping displacement crises. To Mayama, where the
- 21:58Speaker 6: former Myama State councilor unsangsu Chi, has been transferred from
- 22:02Speaker 6: prison to house arrest, with her sentence reduced under a
- 22:05Speaker 6: prisoner amnesty linked to a Buddhist holiday. The UN Secretary
- 22:09Speaker 6: General welcomed the move, but reiterated his call for the
- 22:12Speaker 6: swift and unconditional release of all those arbitrarily detained as
- 22:17Speaker 6: a fundamental step toward essential political reform. Antonio Gutadesh believes
- 22:22Speaker 6: that a viable political solution must be founded on an
- 22:25Speaker 6: immediate end to the brutal civil conflict across Myamar and
- 22:29Speaker 6: a genuine commitment to inclusive dialogue. Sustained engagement by the military,
- 22:34Speaker 6: junta and rebel leaders with the UN Special Envoy is
- 22:37Speaker 6: crucial to supporting efforts toward a policeful solution. This includes
- 22:41Speaker 6: coordination with regional partners such as the Asian Group of
- 22:45Speaker 6: Nations in line with the calls for the Security Council
- 22:48Speaker 6: and General Assembly. Finally, to Israel, where a newly adopted
- 22:51Speaker 6: death penalty for terrorist law perpetuates racial discrimination against Palestinians.
- 22:56Speaker 6: According to a panel of independent human rights experts who
- 22:59Speaker 6: are support by the UN Human Rights Office WITCHR. According
- 23:04Speaker 6: to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,
- 23:07Speaker 6: the new law amounts to a grave erosion of human
- 23:09Speaker 6: rights and urges Israel to immediately repeal the law. The
- 23:13Speaker 6: committee expressed alarm that the law mandates death by hanging
- 23:16Speaker 6: as the default sentence for cases involving an act of
- 23:19Speaker 6: terrorism before Israeli military courts, which have exclusive jurisdiction over
- 23:24Speaker 6: Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, while Israeli citizens and
- 23:28Speaker 6: residents are excluded from them. The committee said the new
- 23:31Speaker 6: law is a severe blow to human rights, rolling back
- 23:34Speaker 6: Israel's long standing de facto moratorium on execution since nineteen
- 23:38Speaker 6: sixty two and expanding the use of the death penalty
- 23:41Speaker 6: in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, including the West
- 23:44Speaker 6: Bank and East Jerusalem. The Committee highlighted its concern that
- 23:48Speaker 6: in Israel, the law applies only to those convicted of
- 23:51Speaker 6: deliberate killing with the attempt of denying the existence of
- 23:54Speaker 6: the State of Israel, making it in effect applicable to
- 23:58Speaker 6: Palestinians only. Further noted that the law prohibits mitigation, commutation
- 24:03Speaker 6: or pardon of the death penalty, and sets a ninety
- 24:06Speaker 6: day deadline for executions once a final judgment is rendered. Meanwhile,
- 24:10Speaker 6: the committee said the law was adopted amid escalating settle
- 24:14Speaker 6: of violence and unlawful killings with impunity across the occupied
- 24:17Speaker 6: Palestinian territory, as well as ongoing systematic violations of Palestinian's
- 24:22Speaker 6: due process and fair trial rights. As of January twenty
- 24:26Speaker 6: twenty six, nine two hundred and forty three Palestinians were
- 24:30Speaker 6: in Israeli custody, including three thousand, three hundred and eighty
- 24:34Speaker 6: five administrative detainees held without trial at debray Un News.
- 24:39Speaker 7: Thanks so much for that, Ed, And as you guys know,
- 24:41Speaker 7: today we are shining a spotlight on the movie American
- 24:44Speaker 7: Day See, and today is day one of the four
- 24:48Speaker 7: day spread where we shine a spotlight on not only
- 24:51Speaker 7: the film itself, but its impact and all the individuals
- 24:55Speaker 7: that are conspired together to make that film into what
- 24:58Speaker 7: it is today genuinely called classic. And if you're not
- 25:01Speaker 7: familiar with the film, it's really a love story about
- 25:04Speaker 7: a kid grows up here in the United States from
- 25:07Speaker 7: South Asian descent and kind of finds the South Asian
- 25:09Speaker 7: identity through a love story. So we'll get into it
- 25:13Speaker 7: a little bit. Stand by for.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Mary Marco Hassana and.
- 25:21Speaker 22: Kamana person the persons.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Such a listener rap Gali person loved kush kusina.
- 25:44Speaker 22: Al from Sani you wander arrive will BMC slam.

- 27:45Speaker 7: New York. She brought Father Sai to life in American
- 27:49Speaker 7: Daycy and has since carved out a steady career in
- 27:51Speaker 7: Hollywood with roles in Blades of Glory, Law and Order,
- 27:55Speaker 7: Criminal Intent, and most recently, Adam Sandler's animated hit movie Leo,
- 28:00Speaker 7: a true Diasporas story on and off the screen. And
- 28:05Speaker 7: as part of our week long special of shining a
- 28:07Speaker 7: light on the movie American They See, folks, let's invite
- 28:11Speaker 7: this young lady to the show, Sunita Bottom, how are
- 28:14Speaker 7: you today? Welcome to the bridge.
- 28:17Speaker 25: I am great and I love that you called me
- 28:20Speaker 25: the young lady of course.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Reason.
- 28:23Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely, you know, yeah, you know, I know it's
- 28:28Speaker 7: only been what twenty five years, but time is flying? Yes, yes,
- 28:34Speaker 7: and listen, yeah, I know that it's been, you know,
- 28:38Speaker 7: twenty five years since this film made its way out there.
- 28:42Speaker 7: What an impact it all made for everybody that was
- 28:45Speaker 7: involved in this film. And you don't want to get
- 28:48Speaker 7: your thoughts on it. Twenty five years.
- 28:51Speaker 26: Yeah, it's really amazing because you know this movie was
- 28:55Speaker 26: the first of it's kind, so you didn't see that
- 28:58Speaker 26: many brown cases or any at the least this many
- 29:02Speaker 26: brand spaces up on the big screen.
- 29:05Speaker 25: And it made a massive impression and a huge imprint
- 29:10Speaker 25: on so many people's lives.
- 29:13Speaker 4: You know.
- 29:13Speaker 26: I think it was the first time people like you
- 29:16Speaker 26: and me felt like they were represented, you know, and
- 29:21Speaker 26: part of that was truly incredible.
- 29:25Speaker 7: You know, I going back to the moment. Let's talk
- 29:29Speaker 7: about this in an industry, in a business that was
- 29:33Speaker 7: completely radically different than it is now. You know, there
- 29:36Speaker 7: weren't so many productions of this nature. You you you
- 29:40Speaker 7: get contacted from you know, somebody from the team, maybe
- 29:43Speaker 7: get maybe Puche with this grand vision of you playing Fara,
- 29:48Speaker 7: and you know, what was your reaction to that? And
- 29:51Speaker 7: what was that moment like when you first saw all right, Fara,
- 29:55Speaker 7: what is this character and what is this film? What
- 29:58Speaker 7: was that moment? Take us back to that initial reaction.
- 30:02Speaker 25: God, it was so long ago.
- 30:04Speaker 26: Well, so, you know, I was a young actor in
- 30:05Speaker 26: New York. It's a late nineties. I did have an agent,
- 30:11Speaker 26: and I think I'd only been in New.
- 30:12Speaker 25: York like a year or two.
- 30:14Speaker 26: I don't remember if the audition came through my agent
- 30:18Speaker 26: or whether I saw the posting in backstage, which was
- 30:22Speaker 26: like the newspaper at.
- 30:23Speaker 25: The time that post auditions, but just I just was like, oh,
- 30:29Speaker 25: take a movie and it's like all South.
- 30:32Speaker 26: Asians, that's so interesting, Oh my god, okay, it just
- 30:36Speaker 26: I didn't we none of us knew what we were
- 30:38Speaker 26: walking into. And you know, Pusche over these last few
- 30:43Speaker 26: weeks were posting, was posting videos, audition videos, and then
- 30:47Speaker 26: I saw this video of my audition.
- 30:48Speaker 25: And it was just it was mind blowing.
- 30:51Speaker 26: And I think a lot of memory, you know, we
- 30:54Speaker 26: forget things over time, but seeing that video, I was like,
- 30:57Speaker 26: oh my god, I totally remember that.
- 30:58Speaker 25: I remember that room. I remember, you know, it was
- 31:01Speaker 25: a big studio, there was a mirror, there was a
- 31:03Speaker 25: ballet bar.
- 31:04Speaker 7: I remember doing that scene.
- 31:05Speaker 25: I remember, you know. So it was it was pretty incredible,
- 31:09Speaker 25: and nobody knew what it was.
- 31:10Speaker 26: Going to be, right, and the fact that he usual
- 31:14Speaker 26: was able to do that, like he'd never written anything before,
- 31:17Speaker 26: he'd never directed. Pulling together all of these actors and
- 31:21Speaker 26: many of whom are doing really really well.
- 31:23Speaker 25: And quite successful.
- 31:26Speaker 26: Now, you know, pulling all these actors together to do
- 31:30Speaker 26: this project. It was pretty incredible.
- 31:33Speaker 7: It's interesting, you know, you reflected on what this class
- 31:38Speaker 7: of talent has gone on to do. I think a
- 31:41Speaker 7: lot of people know several of the actors for what
- 31:45Speaker 7: they've done since the movie, but may not know that,
- 31:48Speaker 7: you know, the genesis of this was this little classic
- 31:51Speaker 7: called American They see that happened. Yeah, you probably come
- 31:56Speaker 7: across a lot of people that know you from the film,
- 31:59Speaker 7: that soly remember you from playing this role in a
- 32:04Speaker 7: film that was so important in our culture at the time.
- 32:06Speaker 7: You know, put this twenty five years into context for
- 32:09Speaker 7: us in terms of the perspective you've gained for its
- 32:12Speaker 7: impact out there.
- 32:15Speaker 26: Really, truly, I think it's the sense of appreciation and
- 32:20Speaker 26: awareness of what I was privileged enough to have a
- 32:28Speaker 26: hand in and be a part of, and a sense
- 32:32Speaker 26: of gratitude.
- 32:33Speaker 25: Honestly, you know, a lot has happened in twenty five years.
- 32:39Speaker 26: You know, we grow up and we experience a lot
- 32:41Speaker 26: of life, whether it's you know, good or bad, or indifferent.
- 32:46Speaker 25: Or both all of it, because that's life.
- 32:47Speaker 26: So it's really truly a sense of appreciation and gratitude
- 32:51Speaker 26: that I was able to be a part of this
- 32:55Speaker 26: incredible piece that affected many people in such a positive way.
- 33:03Speaker 7: And congratulations on the big twenty fifth anniversary, and uh
- 33:07Speaker 7: here's to celebrate in the fiftieth here pretty.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Soon, pretty soon, Okay, all right, it's fly bye.
- 33:15Speaker 7: It'll be here soon all right. So there you are.
- 33:17Speaker 25: You are not wrong, You are not wrong.
- 33:19Speaker 7: Definitely. Thanks for joining us today Asnita.
- 33:22Speaker 25: Thank you so much. Have a great day.
- 33:24Speaker 7: Yep, folks, here's the next song for you.
- 33:28Speaker 27: Give us, just give me the.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Jollie, come.
- 33:42Speaker 12: Go say.
- 33:53Speaker 15: Look look it's a say.
- 34:01Speaker 27: Hurry zuk sis nib hi ocasi jadai bina but i
- 34:21Speaker 27: acsi benazuk sis neb high as Jackpaia, but a cursy
- 34:47Speaker 27: cozy said, don't be delayed to me. Okay, sorry reward Ju,
- 34:55Speaker 27: but they have he logKi sky show domain.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Don't believe party in y'all don't.
- 35:05Speaker 25: But you.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Know said is the leve highcasing leve Hi.
- 35:42Speaker 12: Back by again.
- 35:44Speaker 3: Soapan it's again again his huh.
- 35:55Speaker 12: Say hid the.
- 35:59Speaker 7: Snape's a cosey great track right there. It's bringing poor
- 36:04Speaker 7: Verbeedi to this show. Eh. She was born in Chendigar,
- 36:07Speaker 7: raised between Belgium and New York and a Williams college
- 36:10Speaker 7: grad who trained at the British American Drama Academy in London.
- 36:15Speaker 7: She was the heart of American dacy as Nina Shah
- 36:18Speaker 7: and has since built one of the most respected careers
- 36:20Speaker 7: in the cast, a Drama Desk Award winner for Dance
- 36:23Speaker 7: Nation with credits spanning Sully, Gossip Girl. One of us
- 36:27Speaker 7: is lying on the stages of the Public Playwrights Horizons,
- 36:30Speaker 7: Manhattan Theater Club, The Amazing Poor Baby, How are you, pa.
- 36:36Speaker 4: I'm fantastic, I'm so happy to be here.
- 36:38Speaker 7: Well, you know, take us back to the moment you
- 36:41Speaker 7: find out that you've been You've been put this character
- 36:45Speaker 7: of Nina Sean in front of you and you're you're
- 36:48Speaker 7: you're probably making sense of how there's so many brown
- 36:51Speaker 7: names in a script like this throughout an entire film.
- 36:55Speaker 7: And so take us back to that moment, tell us
- 36:57Speaker 7: how this role landed in your lap, and walk us
- 37:01Speaker 7: through the moment where you're like, yeah, I'm going to
- 37:03Speaker 7: do this.
- 37:05Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 37:05Speaker 4: I mean I was like a freak avoid for being
- 37:08Speaker 4: like an Indian American girl who wanted to be an actress.
- 37:11Speaker 8: Right.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Everyone else was like you know, engineering, med school, law school,
- 37:19Speaker 4: Like I was like the only Indian person I knew
- 37:21Speaker 4: who wanted to act seriously, So it was pretty weird
- 37:26Speaker 4: what I was doing. And I was in New York
- 37:27Speaker 4: City and I was reading backstage, and I was going
- 37:30Speaker 4: on auditions, and you know, it's like I was like,
- 37:33Speaker 4: people don't know what to do with me, and there's
- 37:35Speaker 4: like so few Indian people doing this. And then I
- 37:39Speaker 4: got a couple of like basically the same time the
- 37:43Speaker 4: American Bacy, like the Little Ad was in backstage. It
- 37:47Speaker 4: was the same time as this other play called East
- 37:49Speaker 4: Of East of Manhattan Theater Club was being done. And suddenly,
- 37:54Speaker 4: like I went from like not having any idea what
- 37:57Speaker 4: I was doing to being cast into things at the
- 38:00Speaker 4: same time that were primarily South Asian casts, right, And
- 38:04Speaker 4: it was mind blowing for me, And it was pretty
- 38:08Speaker 4: mind blowing for all of the other like South Asian
- 38:12Speaker 4: actors who were in the projects with me, because we
- 38:15Speaker 4: were all pretty isolated and unique and weird in our
- 38:21Speaker 4: career choices, you know, to be doing this thing. And
- 38:25Speaker 4: then when I, you know, started with American Dacy and
- 38:28Speaker 4: I met Kal and Ronevier and Deep and Sunita and
- 38:31Speaker 4: Ami and just the whole gang, it was such a
- 38:36Speaker 4: beautiful experience to feel not isolated in this funny profession
- 38:43Speaker 4: that I was going into, to feel like there are
- 38:45Speaker 4: other people like me. I mean I think, like, yeah,
- 38:48Speaker 4: you know, I basically like had a crush on every
- 38:50Speaker 4: single person I worked with, because I was so excited
- 38:54Speaker 4: to have met someone who had made some moilre choices me.
- 38:58Speaker 7: Right, that's awesome. You know, take us back to that
- 39:01Speaker 7: set you have. You have so many awesome folks all
- 39:05Speaker 7: collaborating on a project like this, and you just put
- 39:08Speaker 7: it very kind of squarely. You all had something in common.
- 39:11Speaker 7: You had all made this choice in life, and you
- 39:13Speaker 7: were in it together, if you will. What was the
- 39:15Speaker 7: energy on the set, like with everybody there?
- 39:18Speaker 4: It was you know, it was so long ago that
- 39:22Speaker 4: I only remember like the fun and the excitement and
- 39:26Speaker 4: the stories were like so like silly and loud, and
- 39:31Speaker 4: and you know rewatching, you know, I rewatched the film
- 39:34Speaker 4: recently at the American Days, the reunion event, right, and
- 39:39Speaker 4: I was actually marveling at how that film was still
- 39:45Speaker 4: ahead of its time. It was because it was telling
- 39:47Speaker 4: dacy stories, not for the white gaze, but for.
- 39:51Speaker 25: The dacy gaze.
- 39:52Speaker 4: Because there's there's a seek storyline there's a Muslim storyline.
- 39:56Speaker 4: There's you know the story of like a Muslim woman
- 39:59Speaker 4: who who is both like modern and teeny boppery and
- 40:02Speaker 4: also embraces her culture and religion as well as you know,
- 40:06Speaker 4: my character and finds her way through it.
- 40:08Speaker 15: But there are so.
- 40:09Speaker 4: Many distinct basy like regionalities and stories in one film,
- 40:15Speaker 4: Like it wasn't like a Punjabi story. It was like
- 40:18Speaker 4: there were some Funjabi characters, but there were you know,
- 40:21Speaker 4: and you know, actually don't see that very much in
- 40:24Speaker 4: an independent like even in an Indian American movie, Like
- 40:27Speaker 4: it wasn't like it was a pretty wide swath of diversity.
- 40:31Speaker 4: So yeah, cool, even if some things are dated and
- 40:35Speaker 4: something we wouldn't if we remade the movie now, we
- 40:38Speaker 4: would do some different choices.
- 40:39Speaker 7: I think, you know, well, going back to it, you
- 40:44Speaker 7: you you you you you look at something like what
- 40:49Speaker 7: you did at that time. You know, even yourself, like
- 40:52Speaker 7: you obviously come from such a serious literary family, you know,
- 40:56Speaker 7: with what your mom does right and what she has
- 40:58Speaker 7: been accomplished career, and then you have you know this this,
- 41:02Speaker 7: I think you've spent an incredible amount of time in
- 41:05Speaker 7: your career building infrastructure for whether it is the playwrights
- 41:10Speaker 7: out there, if you've done anything towards theater or in
- 41:13Speaker 7: the different places that you've done. And I feel like
- 41:16Speaker 7: there's something about what Buse did that may have in
- 41:19Speaker 7: some sort of way inspired you to go out there
- 41:20Speaker 7: and be somewhat of an infrastructure builder, somewhat of someone
- 41:24Speaker 7: that can go out there and build the invisible if
- 41:26Speaker 7: you will. Is that is that true?
- 41:30Speaker 4: You know? I hadn't thought of it that way, But
- 41:32Speaker 4: when you say that, it's like, yeah, like he was
- 41:35Speaker 4: sort of teaching me the idea of representation matters before
- 41:41Speaker 4: I'd ever heard that phrase or anyone had coined it
- 41:43Speaker 4: in that way, right, Because here was a script that
- 41:49Speaker 4: was exactly what I said, like all of these basy stories,
- 41:52Speaker 4: and I had been trying to be like, well, what
- 41:55Speaker 4: kind of a job can I get as a you know,
- 41:57Speaker 4: like a brown Indian American actress. I'll take whatever anyone
- 42:02Speaker 4: offers me, but I haven't put myself into a position
- 42:05Speaker 4: of power and of like no, no, actually, like we
- 42:08Speaker 4: can create these stories and opportunities for ourselves, which is
- 42:11Speaker 4: what Pusch was doing, right, Because I was like, well,
- 42:15Speaker 4: I guess people can put me in Shakespeare place because
- 42:17Speaker 4: people go non traditional casting in those which is a
- 42:21Speaker 4: very small minded.
- 42:22Speaker 25: Way to think.
- 42:22Speaker 4: But that is what the world was presenting me in
- 42:25Speaker 4: you know, nineteen ninety six. But piuche was doing what
- 42:30Speaker 4: everyone like now is like, of course you got to
- 42:33Speaker 4: do that, which is making his own stories, making our
- 42:35Speaker 4: own stories. So yeah, I think he taught me early
- 42:39Speaker 4: that idea, and then my career the last twenty five
- 42:42Speaker 4: years has been very much about like helping play rights
- 42:47Speaker 4: build the world they want to build, right, and whatever
- 42:52Speaker 4: that story is, like find your story, develop your story,
- 42:55Speaker 4: believe in your story, and flush it out fully, whatever
- 42:59Speaker 4: your skin color, background, gender, sexuality. Right.
- 43:05Speaker 7: Nina is an interesting character. Of course, she's probably the
- 43:09Speaker 7: most culturally centered out of everyone in the movie. And
- 43:13Speaker 7: you know, and at the time, of course you represented
- 43:18Speaker 7: you know, something of of I guess that the audience
- 43:22Speaker 7: is sitting there being a fan of what the outcome
- 43:24Speaker 7: would be for you specifically in the film. And how
- 43:27Speaker 7: was that at that time, you know, being somebody that
- 43:31Speaker 7: played this role and then you know, being such an
- 43:34Speaker 7: inspiration for other leading ladies in these kind of love
- 43:38Speaker 7: stories like this and a very unique you know backdrop,
- 43:42Speaker 7: give us a sense of that playing the Nina role.
- 43:46Speaker 4: You know, Nina is aspirational for me.
- 43:49Speaker 25: Like I feel like.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Nina was like balanced and had her act together and
- 43:53Speaker 4: was confident and comfortable in her own skin in a
- 43:56Speaker 4: way that she was not, Like I might have talked
- 44:01Speaker 4: a good game and sold my Needa, but I think
- 44:04Speaker 4: I didn't feel totally comfortable, and I didn't you know,
- 44:09Speaker 4: have the confidence of like what my culture means to me,
- 44:14Speaker 4: because it was a different time then, and like beauty
- 44:18Speaker 4: was defined, you know, like we're talking about like we
- 44:21Speaker 4: made that in nineteen ninety nine, it came out, you
- 44:23Speaker 4: know in two thousand and one, Like beauty was very
- 44:27Speaker 4: much like white, traditional blonde, blue eyes, you know. And
- 44:31Speaker 4: so I didn't have the sort of self confidence of
- 44:34Speaker 4: living in my brown skin going to school with people
- 44:39Speaker 4: no one looked like me. You know, I was the
- 44:41Speaker 4: only one that looked like me when I in all
- 44:44Speaker 4: of my educational disciplines in like you know, high school, college,
- 44:48Speaker 4: elementary school. So I didn't have the comfort that Nina had.
- 44:53Speaker 7: So so.
- 44:55Speaker 4: It was really like, yeah, it was sort of like
- 44:58Speaker 4: I think I think I would.
- 44:59Speaker 25: Have liked have been more like Mena in my life.
- 45:02Speaker 7: Wow, that's really interesting and thanks for sharing that. I
- 45:05Speaker 7: think it probably tells more to the story of the
- 45:09Speaker 7: job that you did in that role and realizing, you know,
- 45:12Speaker 7: what the character had to portray and you did that
- 45:13Speaker 7: so well, and so thank you for that. Right. You know,
- 45:18Speaker 7: as you look at the time when the film came out,
- 45:22Speaker 7: it comes out right before nine to eleven, in a
- 45:25Speaker 7: time where people have not even figured this out from
- 45:28Speaker 7: anyone else that's brown, and here's a film that speaks
- 45:31Speaker 7: directly to the condition of the South Asian experience here
- 45:35Speaker 7: talk about that time, you know, nine to eleven comes.
- 45:38Speaker 7: It kind of changes the narrative around the film in
- 45:41Speaker 7: a way, but then again reframes it in a much
- 45:45Speaker 7: different purposeful way as far as what our representation of
- 45:48Speaker 7: our culture is. Tell us back about that absolutely well.
- 45:51Speaker 4: So I actually think that we were more invisible then,
- 45:57Speaker 4: and certainly the Muslim experience on screen after two thousand
- 46:03Speaker 4: and one was all quite negative.
- 46:07Speaker 2: It was, you know, terrorist.
- 46:10Speaker 25: Mostly.
- 46:11Speaker 4: And that's what's so wild about watching the film which
- 46:15Speaker 4: came out just before nine to eleven, because you see
- 46:17Speaker 4: Riswanmanji and Suneta Parum depicting Islam. It's just like we're
- 46:23Speaker 4: just college kids practicing our religion and now we're doing
- 46:26Speaker 4: our prayers and now we're going to mock and it's
- 46:29Speaker 4: just a part of our life. And also you know,
- 46:31Speaker 4: we're going to the school dance and living our life
- 46:34Speaker 4: and it's like, oh, watching it, I was like, oh,
- 46:37Speaker 4: like that.
- 46:39Speaker 25: Is something I never see.
- 46:41Speaker 4: You don't see like someone just like being a Muslim
- 46:43Speaker 4: and being fully integrated into their life in college and
- 46:46Speaker 4: it's no big deal.
- 46:48Speaker 7: Yeah, that's fantastic. Borva. Thank you so much for spending
- 46:53Speaker 7: time with me here on my show. I wanted to
- 46:56Speaker 7: one more time just congratulate you on the film and
- 46:58Speaker 7: everything that you've been doing in your career. And thanks
- 47:01Speaker 7: for joining us here on the bridge.
- 47:03Speaker 12: Oh thank you.
- 47:04Speaker 4: Such a pleasure and so happy to talk to you
- 47:07Speaker 4: again after all this time.
- 47:09Speaker 7: Thank you so much. Here's everyone may.
