- 0:00We're #2 welcome back. It's Miller and Condon.
- 0:02It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network flag shipped on Des
- 0:05Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O still to come this hour,
- 0:10Sam Burnaby, the four decade plus general manager of the Iowa
- 0:14Cubs. He announced after the season
- 0:17ended on Sunday that the season his career coming to an end.
- 0:21Sam Burnaby will join Trent and I in about 20 minutes.
- 0:26Let's get to Cappy. He's headed to Vegas.
- 0:30The next two weeks, he's going to Vegas for two weeks.
- 0:34Well, no, no, no, no. There's a return trip in
- 0:36between. It's living right in the world
- 0:38of David. Kaplan God Kap, how are you?
- 0:40Good to talk to you. Back-to-back weeks in Vegas,
- 0:42that can take a toll. It can.
- 0:45It definitely can. Good to be with you guys as
- 0:48always, No. So we're taking the entire radio
- 0:52station on Air staff. Tomorrow.
- 0:55Night to for the Bears, Raiders. So I'm we land at 10:00 if we're
- 1:01on time tomorrow night, Vegas time, midnight Chicago time, and
- 1:06I'm on the air for my morning show, 4:00 AM Vegas time Friday
- 1:13morning, Jonathan Hood and I and the set is literally at the
- 1:16pool. So I will be at the pool at
- 1:19Mandalay Bay at 4:00 AM. I'm on 4 to 7 Vegas time and
- 1:25then I'm just going to drag my carcass to the to the back to
- 1:30the pool and lay out there and get some sleep.
- 1:32But when we land tomorrow night, I'm not a guy who can grab like
- 1:352 hours of sleep and get up and go to work.
- 1:37So I'm just going to go to the tables and stay up.
- 1:40We did a whole thing on it today.
- 1:42I'm going to stay up until we're on at 4315.
- 1:45I'll cash out or stagger over to the set and do the show and then
- 1:51I come home Sunday morning. I'm not going to the game.
- 1:53I'm coming back and then next Thursday I'm taking my wife for
- 1:58her birthday. We're going to see the Eagles at
- 2:01the spear. Nice, nice, well done, great
- 2:05present. Well look, the Mandalay's great
- 2:07for for games of the legion, you walk across the Interstate.
- 2:10They they closed whatever St. that is.
- 2:12So within walking if you if you're going to a game there and
- 2:15you want to walk, that's the that's the property to stay at
- 2:18or the Luxor, any of the properties at the South end of
- 2:21the strip. So so that's that's pretty cool
- 2:23and I can't wait to hear about this fear when we talk to you in
- 2:25two weeks. But I look forward to catching
- 2:27up with you next week as well. So lots to get to, Cap.
- 2:30Obviously, we'll get to the Cubs, who haven't won a game
- 2:33since they clinched their playoff spot.
- 2:35But got to start with the Bears and they just pounded the
- 2:38Cowboys. Luther Burden, both you and
- 2:41Trent and wondering when he's going to make his debut as a
- 2:44bear make at least do something, be allowed to do something.
- 2:47He certainly had a big game against the against the Cowboys
- 2:51Sunday. So, Cap, I guess we'll just
- 2:52throw an open question to you. What did you see?
- 2:55What did you like? And have the Bears turned a
- 2:58corner was, you know, tap the brakes?
- 3:00You need to see more. Yeah, I got to see more, but I
- 3:04loved what I watched. Now, look, that Eberfussen's
- 3:07defense terrible. Some of that I thought the
- 3:10scheme was was not good. There were too many open
- 3:13receivers. I mean, what are you doing
- 3:15there? But also they didn't put any
- 3:18pressure on Caleb. He was never sacked.
- 3:20Well, Michael Parsons plays, unfortunately for the Packers
- 3:22now for Dallas fans. So, you know, put all that in
- 3:26perspective. However, I've watched the film,
- 3:30I have made my notes. I have talked with Olen Kreutz
- 3:33and Tommy Waddle and we're all in agreement that as you watch
- 3:37the film, watch Caleb's footwork.
- 3:40His footwork was quiet, he wasn't all over the place, off
- 3:45balance, and he's got sick ability.
- 3:52Flea flicker play, go back. I just urge everyone watch the
- 3:56play, but watch it and slow it down and watch DeAndre Swift.
- 4:01Nobody's even talking about it. DeAndre Swift goes to the line
- 4:05and he gets hit in the shoulder as he's trying to pitch it back.
- 4:10Most guys wouldn't get the pitch back there.
- 4:12He threw it, it went high in the air, but he was able to get it
- 4:15back there. And then most guys quit on the
- 4:17play. That's just a natural reaction.
- 4:20All right, I did my job. That dude turns and chips a
- 4:23linebacker and drills him. Otherwise, that guy's sacking
- 4:27Caleb and Caleb Williams basically flat footed the
- 4:32longest completion in the NFL this year, 65.2 yards.
- 4:37It was a dime. It was unbelievable,
- 4:40unbelievable. Really good catch by Luther
- 4:42Burden. Tommy Waddle played in the
- 4:44league at wide receiver for a long time.
- 4:46He said that is not an easy play.
- 4:48Everyone be like, well, that was an easy catch, he said.
- 4:50Absolutely not. Your momentum is carrying you
- 4:53towards out of bounds. You got to locate that ball high
- 4:56in the sky and you're wondering if you're going to get lit up,
- 4:59he said. I'm just telling you that was a
- 5:01hell of a play on every level. So Dennis Allen much maligned a
- 5:06couple weeks ago after that performance against the Lions
- 5:09when they were run out of the building, given up 52 points.
- 5:12They gave up just 14, including a shutout in the second-half
- 5:14against the Cowboys. Had a couple interceptions, one
- 5:17late was a desperation play, one off a tip.
- 5:19But what have you seen signs of this defense is I don't think
- 5:22it's going to be good by any means and maybe averages the top
- 5:25watermark that they can hit this year, but signs of improvement.
- 5:28What did you see out of the Bears D?
- 5:31Tyreke Stevenson had his best game as a pro, without a doubt.
- 5:35He had that huge strip of Javonte Williams.
- 5:38After the Bears score the first touchdown, they they run the
- 5:43ball right down the field on the Bears and I'm thinking, well,
- 5:45it's going to be a shootout. And Tyreke Stevenson finds a way
- 5:49to come from behind and not punch it out like Tina Tillman.
- 5:53He rips the ball out, get his feet down so he's in bounds
- 5:58Bears ball. That is a massive, massive play
- 6:02and then the bears end up you know, driving the ball down late
- 6:06in the first half. It called commet for a touchdown
- 6:09and then the 19 play drive was just crazy.
- 6:15But the defense did a really good job in the second-half.
- 6:18They got a couple sacks on DAC. They the pick there was 2 by
- 6:23Terrell Edmonds, Tremaine Edmonds there was 2.
- 6:27But the one where people went off the hands of George Pickens
- 6:31and he made a diving catch, that was insane athleticism.
- 6:36Not many could make that play. Cap, I guess if we're picking
- 6:39Nets, you still have to get the run game going.
- 6:41Is that fair that nobody's really taken this running game
- 6:44and and and, you know, asserted themselves and become the guy
- 6:48Swift, I think led the team, but his his stats were inferior to
- 6:52most other running back ones in the league, right.
- 6:55Yeah, they averaged as a team 3 yards of carry, I believe.
- 7:00Didn't rush for 100 yards. Caleb obviously had a monster
- 7:03day with 298. And as I watched that, that
- 7:07offensive line, I thought they played a really solid football
- 7:10game. They did.
- 7:12They kept it Caleb clean, but that 19 play drive, give Ben
- 7:17Johnson credit, they ran the ball, I want to say like 9
- 7:21consecutive, 10 consecutive plays.
- 7:23Even if they picked up a yard, we're slamming it back in there.
- 7:28And then when you needed it, Swift would move the sticks.
- 7:31So I'm cool that their run game is developing.
- 7:35I think it's essential this weekend to beat the Raiders.
- 7:40You're going to have to be able to run the football and you're
- 7:43going to have to be able to stop the football, stop the run.
- 7:46If you can't stop the run, you're dead.
- 7:49You can take the run away and you can run the football.
- 7:53The world is your oyster. And that offensive line for the
- 7:55Raiders has been bad. Sweat had a really good game
- 7:58Sunday and definitely need that to continue.
- 8:01I don't think we can overstate the importance of this game.
- 8:03Cap by week coming up afterwards one and three start if you lose
- 8:07it and then facing three of your next 4 on the road after you
- 8:10come off the by, including Rd. trips to Washington.
- 8:13Commanders aren't going anywhere.
- 8:14Baltimore and Cincinnati, who knows what they're going to look
- 8:17like in early November regardless.
- 8:18Three out of four on the road. It's very simple.
- 8:21This is as close to a must win as you can have in September.
- 8:26Yeah, I, I've always, I think I've told you guys this a
- 8:28billion times. I've been on with, you know,
- 8:30some iteration of the show, Kenny and I've been doing stuff
- 8:33together. What 25?
- 8:35Years. Yep.
- 8:36A long time. I've always said to you there is
- 8:39no such thing as a must win unless you're getting
- 8:42eliminated. If you lose period, because you
- 8:46could, could lose the Dallas game and wake up and you still
- 8:50have a ton of your season left to play.
- 8:53You have 14 to go, Anything could happen.
- 8:56But I did believe that Dallas game was like trenches said, as
- 8:59close to a must win because if you go to O and three with a new
- 9:03coach and a struggling quarterback, you go, oh boy, now
- 9:08what's going to happen? You could then theoretically
- 9:11think, we're going to buy it O and four and the season's over.
- 9:14You're not going to the playoffs.
- 9:15So that was a massive, massive statement.
- 9:19When and before the game kicked off, I bet the bears -9 1/2
- 9:24alternate line. I did that.
- 9:27My two big plays. I bet the bears -9 1/2 and then
- 9:31I bet Caleb Williams over 225-252-7500 and 325.
- 9:38And so I hit 298. So I lost the last two, but
- 9:42those were small plays at long odds.
- 9:44They were 8 to 1 to get 325, but the bears ±9 1/2.
- 9:51I thought they were going to pump that team this weekend.
- 9:55I think they're going to win and to get to 2 and two and have
- 9:58that had a steam up. I'm with Trent.
- 10:01This is a massive game. I don't care how you win it.
- 10:04You have to get on that charter to get home at 2:00 and 2:00.
- 10:08Pad in the bankroll before he head to Vegas.
- 10:11Never a bad thing to do. That's exactly correct.
- 10:14All right, let's talk. Let's talk about the Cubs.
- 10:16They clinched. They haven't won a game since
- 10:18they had they blew a big lead in the baseball game again last
- 10:22night. Kate Horton comes out after
- 10:23three. I think it's precautionary.
- 10:25I hope it's precautionary. Was it precautionary Cap?
- 10:29It's what it sounds like. I've had, you know, one of those
- 10:33coughs where it just hurts your chest and you feel it in your
- 10:36back. That's what he's had.
- 10:38He's been dealing with some type of a bug and there's been other
- 10:42guys in there that have been sick.
- 10:43So like, if they took him out to manage his innings in a game
- 10:47that you had to have, I would have blasted them.
- 10:51But when I heard little tightness in the back were just
- 10:55being safe, a precautionary thing, I was like, all right,
- 10:59that's smart. I got you.
- 11:01I'm glad you did it. So we'll see where this goes.
- 11:05It sounds like he's going to be fine and he'll pitch in the
- 11:08playoffs next week. Who starts game one?
- 11:11I'm not sure what they're going to do.
- 11:13They haven't really tipped their hand around there at all.
- 11:16I talked to a former Major League pitching coach and he's a
- 11:20buddy of mine. He called me the other day.
- 11:21I said if you were the Cubs pitching coach, who would you
- 11:25start in game one here or in San Diego?
- 11:28It looks like it still could be LA.
- 11:30They haven't clinched the division.
- 11:31They're 1 1/2 up, he said 1000%. Matthew Boyd.
- 11:36Really. I go really?
- 11:38He said 1000%. I said not me.
- 11:42He's like, well you're wrong. I said tell me why?
- 11:45He said why would you start the rookie?
- 11:47He said I would have him in Game 2, take the pressure off.
- 11:52He said it's a playoff game, there's still going to be
- 11:54pressure on you. But he said I would start him in
- 11:57Game 2 because you watch Matthew Boyd in the playoffs last year
- 12:00with Cleveland, he was great. Yep, he was tremendous.
- 12:03He said that guy is built for those moments.
- 12:06I'd start him if he struggled. I got Colin Ray, who's not going
- 12:09to start a playoff game. Use him as my long man and then
- 12:13shrink your bullpen usage. He said I have Jameson Tayo and
- 12:18I can use and they said I'd start Kate Horton Game 2, show
- 12:21to Imanaga game 3. Matthew Boyd's last five starts
- 12:24he's given up 4IN runs 424 and five.
- 12:27He's not been the same Matthew Boyd cap as of late.
- 12:30I agree. I agree, but he believes I said
- 12:33that to him. He's like that dude's built for
- 12:35a big moment. He will pitch well, so we'll
- 12:38see. Kyle Tucker back with the team,
- 12:40though not playing with the team, and that still remains on
- 12:43pause at this time. Fill us in on the details.
- 12:45Kyle, Tucker and Eddie hope that he'll be part of the playoff
- 12:48roster. They say he will be.
- 12:52They said yesterday he worked out that he'll be ADH, they
- 12:55hope, and that he felt good yesterday.
- 12:58OK, so I'll take them at their word that he felt good.
- 13:02Let's see how he woke up this morning after running in the
- 13:06outfield and see how he feels. But yeah, I need his bat back.
- 13:09I do. He's a too good a player to not
- 13:12impact the series. Yeah, I agree with you PCA
- 13:16there's he's down at the bottom of the lineup.
- 13:18His counsel have him in the in the rights, but in the batting
- 13:21order. Yeah, he hasn't hit the ball the
- 13:24last month or so very well. So I would take, I wouldn't have
- 13:28him in the middle of my line up yesterday.
- 13:31This guy struggled with bunting and I love PCA.
- 13:34Somebody's been working with him because he got a beautiful
- 13:37sacrifice bunt down yesterday and just his form, everything,
- 13:40how he squared around it, got it down.
- 13:42I'm like, somebody's working with that guy.
- 13:45And you know, it's funny, my producer Shay at ESPN, he wanted
- 13:50to bet me that he'd be a 4040 guy when he was hitting all
- 13:53those home runs. And I said, you want to bet me
- 13:56he may not even be a 3030 guy. He's like, oh, stop, I'm not
- 14:00going to take your money. Well, unless he hits a home run
- 14:03in the last few days of the season, he's stuck at 29.
- 14:06Did. You make the bet.
- 14:08He would. He didn't want to take it.
- 14:10He goes, I don't want to take it.
- 14:12OK, OK, so. The Cubs, after feeling like for
- 14:16the last month they're basically locked into the spot, top wild
- 14:19car they'll be hosting likely the Padres.
- 14:23Now there's a chance they're going on the road for San Diego.
- 14:25Could you make any kind of case though?
- 14:27This team with the struggles going out there, they've hit a
- 14:30lot better on the road this season than they had at home.
- 14:33That maybe in a short series just getting away from Wrigley
- 14:37could be a good thing and maybe kick this kick, kick start this
- 14:40team, excuse me. And maybe I'm looking for any
- 14:42kind of silver lining if they blow this one.
- 14:45No, I would say no. If you blow this, that means
- 14:49your magic number is 4. Right now you're 1 1/2 up.
- 14:52That means San Diego is smoking hot going into the playoffs or
- 14:57LA if San Diego runs them down. And it means you are ice cold.
- 15:03Ice cold. I mean, are you telling me
- 15:05they're going to lose, let's call it one of the next two
- 15:08against the Mets and then lose the series to the Cardinals?
- 15:11Yeah. Then I don't have any hope that
- 15:12they're going to advance if you're that bad for that kind of
- 15:15stretch. No, no, I don't see any silver
- 15:19lining. I want them at Wrigley.
- 15:21I'm hoping it gets a little chilly and the Padres
- 15:23committing. This is horrible.
- 15:25It's cold here. Cap of when will they announce
- 15:30who's coming back in the booth next year?
- 15:32I guess I'm hoping I I'm a book Shambi guy.
- 15:34I I love him and JD together. I do too.
- 15:37Do you think that that'll be the case next year?
- 15:41I haven't heard anything different.
- 15:42I don't know why John would leave.
- 15:45Like, I'm a huge John Shambi fan.
- 15:46I think he's a good person. I just, I really like him.
- 15:50So I mean, I can't believe he would leave.
- 15:54I don't know where he would go. I'm sure people would want him,
- 15:57but why would he leave here? To give up the Cubs gig.
- 16:01Yeah. Maybe, I guess if you're hearing
- 16:04something. No, I'm not.
- 16:05I just, I just love listening to him and it's, it's the fan in me
- 16:09hoping that that's what I'm going to be entertained by next
- 16:11summer. Yeah, and see my advice to
- 16:15Marquis. I think they make it terrible
- 16:17mistake and far be it from me that think I'm running their
- 16:21station, but I'll give them advice anyway.
- 16:24Just use JD 98%. Of the time.
- 16:27Stop having 72 different analysts.
- 16:31Yeah, it drives me nuts. OK, this is not a shot at Ryan
- 16:34Sweeney. I don't need Ryan Sweeney on the
- 16:38pregame and then Carlos Pena on the post game and then this.
- 16:42Give me a little Ryan Dempster and give me JD and Boob Shami.
- 16:47I'm good. And Alex, I love Alex's, you
- 16:49know, the fill in. If I play, I think he's the
- 16:52star. I think he's going to be great.
- 16:53But. Not yet.
- 16:56No, he's not at. Boobs level.
- 16:57No, he's not. Continue to refine his craft,
- 17:00but I think he's very good. Final thing for me, Cap full
- 17:03circle back to Vegas, said he's going to be playing table games.
- 17:06We know you're going to be firing at sports and betting on
- 17:08all that throughout the course of the weekend.
- 17:11What is your table game of choice?
- 17:12You blackjack guy? You like to roll the dice and
- 17:14play some craps? You baccarat guy?
- 17:16What? What's the table game that we'll
- 17:18see Cappy at from about midnight till 4:00 AM?
- 17:21Jeez. That'll be blackjack, maybe a
- 17:23little craps. I don't know how to play
- 17:25baccarat, so that's. It's easy.
- 17:29You put your money up there and then they just take it.
- 17:30That's what I learned last time we were in Vegas.
- 17:32Yeah, I don't know how to do it. So yeah, I'm going to play
- 17:36blackjack and I just sit down and I try to, you know, play the
- 17:41right way. Sometimes it sucks when you're
- 17:43like, oh God, I got to split that and I've got I pressed my
- 17:47bet, but either play it the right way or don't play.
- 17:52So I I can not the guy who's going to be like, I'm going to
- 17:55guess this time I'm sticking on 16 against the dealers 8.
- 17:59No, sorry, play the right way. Cap, I'm going to make you a
- 18:04star. Well, you already are a star,
- 18:06but in your in your colleagues eyes that head out to Las Vegas
- 18:10and stay with you guys. So the shops of Mandalay Bay,
- 18:13it's between the Luxor and the Mandalay Bay.
- 18:15There's an Irish bar called re raw.
- 18:18The food is unbelievable. The entertainment is
- 18:20unbelievable. The drinks are unbelievable.
- 18:22It's a big place. It's in the shops of Mandalay
- 18:25Bay. It's called re raw RERAI think
- 18:28it is it's. I'm gonna.
- 18:29Go. You should and and tell
- 18:31everybody that's on the flight if they're looking for some
- 18:33place to go. You don't have to leave the
- 18:35property. You go up the escalator to the
- 18:37shops of Mandalay Bay. It's on your left, about halfway
- 18:40between Mandalay and the Luxor. You'll be glad you did, and
- 18:43you'll be a star in your colleagues eyes.
- 18:45My friend, you have a good trip and we will talk to you next
- 18:48Wednesday, Cap. Can't wait to hear about it.
- 18:50All right, buddy. You'll get an update on how the
- 18:52gambling is going. Absolutely, and a critique on
- 18:56rerun. Good to talk to you buddy.
- 18:57You got a game for me, By the way, I bet the heck out of Iowa
- 19:00the other day, so thank you. Winner.
- 19:02Winner. Chicken dinner there over
- 19:03Rutgers. Yeah.
- 19:04What do you got for me? I need a college game.
- 19:06You got anything? I.
- 19:08Really like Kansas this week? They're late, 4 1/2 at home
- 19:10against Cincinnati. That was the first one that
- 19:12jumped off the page to me this week.
- 19:14There you go, The Jayhawks chapter.
- 19:16See you buddy, talk to you next week.
- 19:18Yep, David Kaplan, Good stuff out of KAPI re raw.
- 19:23Re Raw, you've talked about it a lot.
- 19:25We were forever. We were scheduled to go there
- 19:27one time and I don't know what happened.
- 19:30You guys were maybe going over to gamble on horses, Yeah?
- 19:33Kel and I were probably my son and I probably going to bet the.
- 19:35Horses and then something and then you guys decided not to
- 19:37that there's something that happened, but it's going to
- 19:39happen. It's it's, it's, it's
- 19:41phenomenal. It really is a fun, fun spot.
- 19:45I'm not a big fan of Mandalay Bay, the property itself.
- 19:47But anyways, that aside, all right, I got to tell you about
- 19:51our friends at Centurion Stone of Iowa.

- 20:32Sam Burnaby, long time GM of the Iowa Cubs.
- 20:35He joins Trenton Inex Miller and Condon talking sports with you
- 20:39on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:42Hi, welcome back Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio
- 20:44Network. We're listening in the state of
- 20:46Iowa. We are grateful that you are
- 20:48well after 4 decades. This is an appropriate song.
- 20:52Although I don't think Sam was at the helm of the icubs when
- 20:54this song was actually came out. But man, it feels like it's
- 20:58sometimes Sam Burnaby been doing a long time, my friend, as
- 21:01Sunday the season comes to an end.
- 21:03You gathered everybody around home plate made the
- 21:05announcement. What a great way to go out.
- 21:07What a great career. Congratulations, my friend.
- 21:10Good to talk to you. Sam, how are you?
- 21:12Oh, thanks guys. You know, it was, it was more
- 21:16emotional than I anticipated to be, but.
- 21:18A. Fun way to do it and I wouldn't
- 21:21had it any other way with my staff.
- 21:22You know the, the most of them have been with me for a long
- 21:27time, decades and in most cases. And, and it was I wanted them to
- 21:33know it was a pretty well kept, closely guarded secret for a
- 21:37while and I wanted them to know 1st.
- 21:38And we did everything we could to try to make that happen that
- 21:41way. Well, since we announced that
- 21:42you're coming on, I've had three people reach on.
- 21:44I promised I would say something, would pass it along.
- 21:47So I better do this before we run on the show.
- 21:49Tom Lemers, I wanted to say his appreciation to what you do for
- 21:53for Matt, who apparently suffers from Down syndrome.
- 21:56Kenny Thompson wishes you all the best.
- 21:58And Brad Chifus, apparently you pitched pretty well when you
- 22:01were at Valley High School back in the day.
- 22:04Says you had a hell of a curveball, but you were always
- 22:08not not disappointed. But you're working on your
- 22:10fastball, so those three folks reached out and sent your best
- 22:13along. So I want.
- 22:14To make sure I did that. Great guys, I always had trouble
- 22:16getting chef out and. It's nice, it's good stuff.
- 22:20Well, Salem as as we look back upon it in a minor League
- 22:24Baseball and it's changed here in the state as we are now
- 22:26statewide across the whole state.
- 22:28And some of those communities have lost their minor league
- 22:30teams, though they still have the team fear on the local level
- 22:33in Des Moines, the Iowa Cubs. You know, when I moved here,
- 22:36I've never been to an Iowa Cubs, though I've lived in Iowa my
- 22:38whole life until I moved here when I was 2324.
- 22:42I've never been to an I Cubs game.
- 22:43The gem of a ballpark that it is.
- 22:45But I've also heard the stories. It hasn't always been the case.
- 22:48So just talk about the transformation, what you guys
- 22:51have done to the stadium and and built up what Iowa Cubs baseball
- 22:54has been throughout the years well.
- 22:56When I started in 1983, most of the day was was related to just
- 23:00trying to get the, the old building safe.
- 23:04You know, the first thing in the morning everybody had to do.
- 23:06There was only, there's only six of us that worked in the
- 23:08operation. First thing we had to do is go
- 23:10pump the sewage out of each dugout in order to make sure
- 23:13that we be ready to go and dry by the end of the day, wash
- 23:16everything down and, and you know, then you had, you had to
- 23:20clean and then you had to roll hot dogs and you had to load the
- 23:23novelty shacks. And, and you know, that was,
- 23:26that was the way baseball started for me.
- 23:28And it really was a great thing because I got to learn how to do
- 23:31all the things appropriately rather than, you know, whether
- 23:35we were doing them right or doing them wrong, we were doing
- 23:37them. And it was all about experience.
- 23:39And so that was, those are the things that molded my decision
- 23:43making on anything that was related to the operation moving
- 23:46forward. You know, then we got to the
- 23:48point where the expenses just weren't, I mean they were going
- 23:51to exceed the revenues and we couldn't keep up with the
- 23:53revenues in the old ballpark. And it came down to a decision
- 23:56that for the communities or, you know, where we, you know, do
- 23:59something different or we're going to have to move out of
- 24:01town. And, and frankly, the folks, the
- 24:03owners of the team, they still own the team in Grand Rapids,
- 24:06MI. They were sitting, I always say
- 24:08they were sitting in a hotel all just outside of town waiting to
- 24:11hear the vote when it went to referendum in 1991 as to whether
- 24:15or not we were going to be able to get a new stadium build.
- 24:17And it wasn't even closed. Fortunately, the community voted
- 24:21overwhelmingly to knock the old one down and build the new and
- 24:23the winter 91 for opening day 92.
- 24:26And, and that's what sits there now.
- 24:28Hope plates actually been in the same spot since 1947, but the
- 24:32the building that's there now is opening day 92 to what it is.
- 24:36We obviously did some additions and remodeling and whatnot, but
- 24:40it's it's basically the bones are the same.
- 24:42What was the the flood of 93? Was that maybe one of the low
- 24:46points? I mean, it's just we all seen
- 24:48the pictures. If we live here, we've seen
- 24:49them, you know, over the, over the time.
- 24:51What was that like, Sam? Take us back to the flood of
- 24:531993, when the ballpark was essentially underwater.
- 24:57Well, it was, it was during the All Star break.
- 24:58In fact, this last July was very similar to the weather pattern
- 25:01that we had. It was 10 or 11 days of
- 25:04consecutive inches, multiple inches of rain.
- 25:09And, and it was right during the All Star break.
- 25:11In fact, I was headed to Albuquerque for the AAA All Star
- 25:14game and I looked at my wife and his We're on our way to the
- 25:17airport and I said I'm going to end up coming back here in
- 25:19another day or two. Sure enough, I did.
- 25:21And of course, everybody else stayed down in Albuquerque and
- 25:26enjoyed the All Star break because there was no reason for
- 25:28anybody to come back with the water turned off all the
- 25:31troubles. So I came back and ended up
- 25:33standing on the levee the South side of the Rackland River and
- 25:37bawled like a baby watching my brand new field be be
- 25:40underwater. And and then I proceeded to go
- 25:42up to Johnny's Hall of Fame and sandbag.
- 25:44So we had to protect the interest of the area.
- 25:48So it's all I could do. And so that was really tough.
- 25:53It was, but fortunately we were out of town the entire time that
- 25:58we left town the day before they turned the water off and in
- 26:01downtown and we're in Des Moines and we got back two days after
- 26:04they about three days after they turned it back on and the city,
- 26:08to their credit, jumped in with the with sanitation crews and
- 26:11disaster crews and cleaned everything up.
- 26:14And we didn't miss a date. We didn't miss a home game
- 26:16because of the flooding. And this because of the way the
- 26:18schedule fell over the All Star break and the extended run of
- 26:22dates out. Everybody, everybody did what
- 26:24they needed to do and we didn't, we didn't miss a miss a game.
- 26:27And really we felt like, in fact, I think the next two or
- 26:30three days we opened the gates up.
- 26:31In fact, we had a temptations concert schedule the day back
- 26:35and we just opened the gates up and let anybody in that wanted
- 26:37to commit. We didn't charge anything.
- 26:39Everybody was so meet up with with weather and flooding and
- 26:42disaster. And so we just felt it was the
- 26:44right thing to do to try to get open and give somebody, somebody
- 26:48something else to think about other than what they were, their
- 26:50trials and tribulations of what. So that's how we got back open.
- 26:54But it was, it was a really tough time for everybody.
- 26:56Walking to Johnny's Hall of Fame, a trip that I know we've
- 26:58made a number of times back in the day.
- 27:00Right back. Yes, we.
- 27:02Did. Oh my God, long time ago.
- 27:04Sorry, Trent. Yes, we did.
- 27:07No problem at all. Love those stories and love
- 27:09looking back upon this career. So obviously you've had some
- 27:14stars that have made their way through.
- 27:16Give us a story or two or or a name that jumps out.
- 27:19What do you think of the great players that have made their way
- 27:21through to Boyne? Guys that you had an opportunity
- 27:23to interact with? Anything that jumps to the top
- 27:25of the mind when I talk about some of those stars.
- 27:29I think the first name that probably and really the one
- 27:32stands out more than any is, is watching Sean Dunstan do do what
- 27:38he did. And while he did it in Des
- 27:40Moines and then and then his career that he had after that,
- 27:44just absolutely the most unbelievable baseball athlete
- 27:47I've ever seen and have seen since, I think and.
- 27:50And more so than hobby. Been a lot of yeah, it was.
- 27:54It was at the time. It was a much more controlled.
- 27:57Type of player, even though he was even younger than Javi, was
- 28:01coming through. Sean could do things.
- 28:04He could throw the baseball and swing the bat and field it like
- 28:08like I'd never seen and really haven't seen since.
- 28:11His arm strength was just incredible.
- 28:13It'd stand there during BP and have some fun and just casually
- 28:18stand behind home plate and throw the ball over the center
- 28:20field wall without any effort. Throw it.
- 28:23You know, he'd go deep in the hole and shortstop behind third
- 28:26base and throw it across the diamond and overthrow first base
- 28:29and literally throw it through the the mesh wire that was there
- 28:32in the old ballpark. And it was just amazing to watch
- 28:35the arm speed and the bat speed and his running speed.
- 28:38You talk about A5 tool player, he was just he was 6 tools.
- 28:42He was just unbelievable how good he was of.
- 28:44Course, she had some Hall of Farmers Greg Maddox jumps off
- 28:47the list. I mean, one of the best ever do
- 28:48it right? But he's not alone, Sam.
- 28:51Well, you know, Greg was just so special to watch and you didn't
- 28:55really know what you were watching at the time.
- 28:57I mean, it was it was a pitcher that it just a fine pitching and
- 29:03and he learned how to pitch it in in Des Moines and on the Iowa
- 29:07Cubs and, and actually went back and forth a time or two between
- 29:10the big club and us. And I think he he probably
- 29:14credits a lot of what he did learn from Dick Pole, who was
- 29:17our long time pitching coach in Des Moines.
- 29:19And then Dick was in the big leagues for a good run after
- 29:22that. And and he when he came to
- 29:24Chicago, he spend this whole time with Dick Pole doing his
- 29:29thing and and you know, that's he just he was a pitcher and
- 29:34that was so special to watch it. But you didn't really know what
- 29:36you were watching until he was winning Cy Young's and gold
- 29:41gloves. And you know, some of the
- 29:43statistics, the big league level are just, I mean, just they're
- 29:46just nutty. You can't even think about the
- 29:49success and what he meant. You know what he meant to
- 29:52pitching and how he pitched on and off, you know, in and out of
- 29:56Des Moines and then of course in Chicago was and Atlanta was just
- 29:59unbelievable. Sam, I know there's a lot of
- 30:02parts of the job I'm sure you'll miss and just being able to be
- 30:04at the ballpark every day. But there's the other side.
- 30:06What is the one thing that you're not going to miss?
- 30:08That you're happy now in retirement?
- 30:10I don't have to deal with this ever again.
- 30:13I get really tired of having a look at the damn radar.
- 30:19I have three, I have 3. Radars on my on my screen in my
- 30:23office at all times with the teams in town and it just I get
- 30:29really wore out with trying to predict the weather and trying
- 30:32to help everybody understand what they need to do in the
- 30:35operation. Chris Losser and I work work.
- 30:39He works his magic with whatever weather he's given and I try to
- 30:42help him understand what that weather is going to be in and
- 30:45he's he's even more meteorologist than I am, but
- 30:49that's that's I won't miss that. I've hope I hope I've helped
- 30:53Randy way over understand all the nuances of the goofy weather
- 30:58in central Iowa that he'll be able to make good decisions as
- 31:02well. And and he's he's he's already
- 31:04done a number of times of that. So he's well polished and would
- 31:07be terrific figuring out whether or not we should call the game
- 31:10or worry about lightning or, or it's too much rain to to not put
- 31:15the tarp down overnight. Or, you know, how long do we
- 31:19wait it out before we start the starting pitchers so we don't
- 31:22burn the pitchers. You know, it's just all kinds of
- 31:24decisions. Go with weather directly and of
- 31:26course safety and you know fan safety and all of that with the
- 31:29with the stadium is the first formal.
- 31:31Yeah, and the teams have good hands with Randy as well.
- 31:34Way over. Want to see that?
- 31:36Last thing for me, Sam, obviously the world champion
- 31:39Chicago Cubs 2016. I Cubs had their fingerprints
- 31:44all over that team, did they not?
- 31:4616 of the 25 on the roster were had played played in Des Moines
- 31:51at some point within the couple of years there.
- 31:54And that was certainly the high point of of my cub career is is
- 31:59as I guess it would be for anybody to the World Series.
- 32:01And and then Mr. Ricketts calling and saying, we'd like to
- 32:05we'd like to give you one of those rings.
- 32:08It was awful special. I keep it with me as often as I
- 32:12can. Certainly down at the stadium.
- 32:14I always have it with me. Like to show it off to anybody
- 32:17that's a Cub fan or interested in looking at it.
- 32:19But it's it was a special time and, and, and I hope we get to
- 32:24get to see that again and for too long.
- 32:26I think we're pretty good. I'd sure like us to be a little
- 32:29bit more on a roll going into the playoffs.
- 32:31But let's hang on and then get the three wild card games home
- 32:35and Wrigley 1st and then we'll, you know, you can't win the
- 32:37tournament if you don't get in the tournament.
- 32:39So that's all I do. Well done San Bernabe, well
- 32:42done. Great career ended on your own
- 32:44terms and it's a heck of a run my friend.
- 32:46Well done San Bernabe. Congratulations.
- 32:49Thanks guys, I appreciate it. And you know, the one thing I
- 32:51think is special about all of it is you're right.
- 32:54I I was able to through my ownership group, they gave me
- 32:57the ability to, to end it on my terms and, and name my successor
- 33:01and, and I'm really proud of that.
- 33:02So Randy will be great. I'm looking forward to what all
- 33:05comes with the Iowa coach move forward.
- 33:07Thanks, Sam. Appreciate it.
- 33:08Good to talk. To you.
- 33:08Thanks guys. All right.
- 33:09Thanks. Yep, see you Sam Bertaby, 4
- 33:12decades at the helm of the what a what a career career.
- 33:15No else I want to say as well. And it's not always the case.
- 33:18Now, well done by the Register. They covered that team all the
- 33:21time. Yes, absolutely.
- 33:22From Randy Peterson with press box is named after now to our
- 33:25friend Tommy Burch, who apparently the bathroom is named
- 33:27after now I don't know if that's true or not.
- 33:29The Birch bathroom, the Birch bathroom up in the press box on
- 33:32that. I've taken a leak in that thing.
- 33:34Well, I have two. Yeah, but what a what a career.
- 33:39Meaning the floods you were you here in 93?
- 33:41No, I was not either. I didn't move here till OH. 60 I
- 33:46thought it was early. I thought it was late 90s.
- 33:48No, no, I was in college. Yeah, I hadn't a couple years
- 33:52afterwards. So yeah, I didn't get down here
- 33:54until 06. So I was, well, I was
- 33:57sandbagging my dad's house at that time.
- 33:59Yeah, up at Osage. Well, New Haven, the little town
- 34:02by Osage. And yeah, sandbagging away is
- 34:04the waters kept rising. It was the night after my
- 34:09grandpa's retirement party. Is that right?
- 34:11And I will say the dad and the uncles and the aunts and
- 34:14everybody, they were not in great shape to be sandbagging
- 34:19the day. Good.
- 34:19For them, a lot of. Booze was sweating out that day,
- 34:22sandbagging to try to get things all set up.
- 34:24That's awesome. I was living in Denver and flew
- 34:27back to see my son who was just born and so I saw it from the
- 34:31air. Oh, wow, it was unbelievable.
- 34:33It was just to watch it from there.
- 34:35My God, this where I used to live and it was just all
- 34:37underwater. But then see some of the
- 34:39pictures. Anyways, your plays of the day
- 34:40are coming up next. Thanks Sam Burnaby for doing
- 34:42that. We'll take your time out.
- 34:43We'll come back. Circus sports sponsors those
- 34:45Miller and Condon. Glad you're with us on Des
- 34:47Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXNO final couple of minutes
- 34:51here on a Wednesday. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 34:55Radio Network coming up at the top of the hour.
- 34:59Off the bench come Sean Roberts and Lucas Strain.
- 35:02Take you until 5:00 overtime, Iowa 5 until 6A.
- 35:06Snippet from the first quarter. Alec and Heather are there on
- 35:08the air, by the way, 6 until 9 from Miller and Condon, then
- 35:11likewise with the boys in the afternoon.
- 35:15Off the bench to until 5:00. Well, baseball tonight.
- 35:18What was the your WNBA play? Did it get home last night?
- 35:22Oh, yeah, it did. Good for you.
- 35:24Mercury cruised. On home, after being now 20, he
- 35:27came back and won in overtime, both series tied up and won a
- 35:30piece. It was not a game.
- 35:32I flipped on the Fever for a good 10 minutes and they were
- 35:34not in competitive. Did Lexi Hall play?
- 35:37I heard she was quite. I didn't hear.
- 35:38I saw a tweet that she was questioned.
- 35:40I think she was out. There was she?
- 35:41Yeah. I believe so, yeah.
- 35:43I was also reading at the time, so yeah, it wasn't exactly like
- 35:46I was locked and loaded, ready to go.
- 35:48Yeah. 2:00 and 1:00 last night. Yeah, your one baseball game was
- 35:52your your team. The Twins let you down.
- 35:54Right. And we got the win with the
- 35:55Guardians plus 137, so 2 and one 1.41 units yesterday.
- 36:01So we got 4 plays today. Where are you baseballing?
- 36:04All baseball, because that's really all there is.
- 36:07I also did lock in Team Europe on the Ryder Cup.
- 36:09Did you bet them? Plus 170 I'll put in my back.
- 36:12Pocket. Are they the better?
- 36:13Do they have the better? Most complete roster.
- 36:16Oh, I don't think there's any doubt at it.
- 36:17I mean, you look at the bottom of the the US team and it's JJ
- 36:21Spawn is, I think, out of the debutantes, the one that I like
- 36:24the best. Well.
- 36:25You because he held it together to win what, the US.
- 36:27Yeah. I mean, he's the only one down
- 36:30the stretch. Griffin.
- 36:31No. Yeah.
- 36:33Even guys that have a little experience, I don't.
- 36:35It's very rare that you go in that you don't really like the
- 36:38roster. It's the first time I can
- 36:39remember. This roster kind of stinks.
- 36:41And then look at the depth of the European team.
- 36:45We'll see. It's going to be fun.
- 36:46As long as we can watch maybe a little bit of it.
- 36:48Let's watch some baseball. All right, what are we doing?
- 36:50We're going right back to the well with the Guardians this
- 36:52time. Not getting plus money though we
- 36:53are laying it -147. So was the pitching match up.
- 36:57It is flirty against Bybee. I will fade.
- 37:01You've told me for years to fade flirty so I'll listen to you
- 37:04from Okay, I will lay the -140 works.
- 37:07I am going back to the well again and fading feeding
- 37:09schemes. It's just.
