- 0:00Have you ever had a loss that just stuck with you?
- 0:03Maybe you missed the shot, lost the deal, or heard a big fat No when you were counting on a yes.
- 0:11It stings right.
- 0:13But here's the thing.
- 0:14Athletes lose all the time, and yet they bounce back.
- 0:19They don't just survive the loss.
- 0:21They use it to fuel their next win.
- 0:24Today, I'm gonna share the confidence formula athletes use to recover fast and how you as a CEO or high achiever can use it too.
- 0:36You're listening to Kathie's Coaching Podcast.
- 0:39I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 0:41Let's start on the court.
- 0:43Picture this, the buzzer goes off.
- 0:45The scoreboard shows your team down by three, and the loss hits hard.
- 0:51What happens next?
- 0:53Some players hang their heads, others slam the ball down, but the greats, they reset.
- 1:00They get ready for the very next play.
- 1:03That's the difference and that's the formula I wanna give you today.
- 1:10Failure isn't final.
- 1:12Michael Jordan once said I failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.
- 1:20Athletes don't see failure as the end.
- 1:23They see it as feedback.
- 1:25Film review coaching a roadmap to what's next In business, you'll face rejection.
- 1:32Maybe it's a pitch that flops or a deal that falls through, but that doesn't define you.
- 1:38It's just data.
- 1:40It's just one play.
- 1:43Ask yourself, what can I learn here?
- 1:46How do I use it for my next move?
- 1:50Confidence is a muscle.
- 1:52Confidence doesn't just show up on game day.
- 1:55Athletes build it in practice day after day, rep after rep.
- 2:01It's the same in leadership.
- 2:02Confidence grows when you keep showing up, when you take the next meeting after a rejection, when you try again after falling short.
- 2:13Every rep tells your nervous system, I can handle this.
- 2:16Confidence is not perfection.
- 2:19It is resilience.
- 2:21You know, right now my favorite baseball team has been on a huge losing streak.
- 2:29I saw this coming and you know, baseball isn't a sport, uh, called.
- 2:33Win all the time.
- 2:35But how do these athletes handle losing?
- 2:38And you might enjoy my story about my favorite athlete of all time, Jose Altuve, who gets booed and actually does better when he's booing.
- 2:48You know, I love sports psychology because it's something you can really study and analyze and utilize in your own life, for example.
- 2:56I talked about how Jose Altuve does that booing, and I related that to the booing that goes on inside our heads and how we can still face life and challenges with confidence just like a professional athlete.
- 3:15The next play mentality is what I want to talk about.
- 3:20This is the game changer, legendary Coach Mike Krasinski.
- 3:25Coach K drilled this into his players next play.
- 3:30It means don't dwell, don't sulk, and don't let a mistake own you.
- 3:36In the boardroom, this might look like, instead of replaying that lost contract in your head, you immediately shift to the next opportunity.
- 3:44Instead of getting paralyzed by criticism, you refine your strategy and keep going.
- 3:49The only thing that matters is the next play.
- 3:54So let's redefine success.
- 3:56An athlete's career isn't defined by one game.
- 4:01It's defined by the season, by the legacy.
- 4:04As leaders, we've got to zoom out one setback, one quarter, one failed launch.
- 4:11That's not your whole story.
- 4:13Success is the long game and every setback is part of the season that shapes you.
- 4:20So I want you to write your comeback story.
- 4:24Here's where it gets fun.
- 4:26Every setback is the setup for a comeback.
- 4:30Think about the greatest sports moment you've ever seen.
- 4:33Aren't they comebacks down to the wire against all odds, rallying back stronger?
- 4:39In business you can create that too.
- 4:43A failed idea can spark your best innovation.
- 4:47A rejection can refine you into the leader who closes the next big deal.
- 4:52Your setback is the training ground for your comeback story.
- 4:56So let's bring it together.
- 4:59The confidence formula is simple.
- 5:01Number one, failure is not final.
- 5:05It's just feedback.
- 5:06Number two, confidence is a muscle.
- 5:09You build it daily.
- 5:11Number three, live with the next play mentality.
- 5:16Number four, redefine success.
- 5:19It's about the long game it.
- 5:21Number five, write your comeback story.
- 5:25So confidence doesn't come from always winning.
- 5:29It comes from knowing you can lose, recover, and still play at your best.
- 5:34Athletes know it, and you as a CEO or high achiever can live it.
- 5:40So the next time rejection knocks you down, remember next play.
- 5:45That's the confidence formula.
- 5:47So this is something that I coach in general.
- 5:50I use sports psychology in all of my coaching.
- 5:54Whether you relate to sports or not, it still works really well.
- 5:59And it's funny because I was working with a client the other day and they're just telling me stories and they kept telling me, Kathie, I don't know why.
- 6:07I'm just telling story after story after story.
- 6:09I feel like I'm boring you.
- 6:11And I said, no.
- 6:12This is where the magic happens.
- 6:15That's the practice that's building that confidence muscle that we're talking about today.
- 6:21And if this sounds like something you are interested in, because it works like magic, just talk your story and then redefine what's going on and look at it as feedback.
- 6:34This is exactly what I do in my coaching as well as with my team coaching too.
- 6:41There will be links to all of that in the show notes and description below, as well as a blog post that goes along with this episode.
- 6:51And you can find more bonus resources in there as well in that blog post.
- 6:58So if this message spoke to you, share it with someone on your team who could use a little comeback energy today.
- 7:07All right, that's my episode for today.
- 7:09I trust that you found it helpful, and if you know someone who can benefit from it, please share it with them.
- 7:15And until next time, I'll see you next time.
- 7:18Peace out and namaste.
