- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the IMT series, and you were daily influence, and today we're going to pick up where we left off last Friday, which is where we talked about why goals fail without milestones.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to go deeper into that because we're at the time of year when people are setting new years resolutions, they've set goals for themselves,
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: milestones just don't help goals succeed.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: They're actually what makes goals attainable in the first place.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't make them easier, doesn't make goals smaller, but it does make goals humanly achievable through structure, clarity, and momentum.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: And you know what's really important about that is if you follow us, you know that smart is the foundation,
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: also the framework.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's not that big goals or any goals don't overwhelm people.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: What really it is that overwhelm people is putting sequenced goals, not smart goals.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: And remember smart specific measurable attainable relevant timely.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: But what milestones add to this is they turn that ambition into an ordered path.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: it allows yourself and your team to focus on what matters in the moment, not what matters in the end, and not everything is at once, which is what really gets us overwhelmed and causes us to abandon those goals, those new years resolutions.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: And it allows a tenability to happen
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: When the next step is clear, and we have milestones, those steps are out in front of us, and they are clear, and they become achievable, because we set them to be achievable as part of the smart process, and they actually help us understand what's connected along the way to that whole goal at the end.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: milestones create psychological safety and as humans we need that we need to feel safe in the path that we're taking and when people can see progress they believe progress is possible.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: In smart milestones, ones that are specific, ones that have measurement included in them, that we know are attainable.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: They reduce anxiety.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: They prevent disagreement, not only within ourselves, but with the teams that were working with to achieve those goals in those individual milestones, and they replace pressure with confidence.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: Teams can stay committed, not because the goal is promised, but because progress is experienced incrementally along the way by the attainment of those milestones.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: And what happens as we move through that is engagement follows the evidence,
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: of the progress.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: Motivation doesn't come from the vision alone.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: It comes from movement.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: Motivation comes from reaching those milestones which provide proof that effort is working.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: And when efforts work, it sustains the energy we need to keep going.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: It provides that instant gratification, that feedback loop that we need to understand, that we're reaching where we want to go.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: And it gives us more belief in attaining the end goal that we're searching for.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: Attainability lives at the intersection of clarity, momentum and trust.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: And without that,
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: goals fall short.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: We don't reach them.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: We digress.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: We fall back into our old habits.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: So look, as we talked about last Friday, milestone creation, milestone management, milestone reaching them is so critical to making sure that we get goal attainment.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: and look, they fail when they feel distant, and oftentimes, goals feel distant, even when we lay them out.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes we even challenge ourselves as to why we're even creating them year after year, moment after moment.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: Goals will succeed when progress feels real and progress can come from setting good, realistic, smart.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: milestones, milestones are not checkpoints from management.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: They are fuel for you and your people.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: When milestones are smart, attainability stops being at hope and becomes a system becomes a discipline.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: In my next episode, we'll continue to explore our milestones.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Don't just drive progress.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: They drive accountability without pressure through the introduction of smart and how smart influences us along the way.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: I hope that you've had a good revisit of milestones.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: I hope we're solidifying
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: milestones as part of the foundation of a goal and how being smart not only in setting the goal but working through the goal and using milestones can help you achieve all of your goals in a more realistic timely way.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: Hope you have a great day with a forward to talking to you again soon.
