- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Talkin' Cactus Podcast, powered by Guns Up Cactus.
- 0:44SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Cactus Rodriguez, my co-host, Cactus McGonical.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Cactus! What's up, buddy?
- 0:51SPEAKER_06: Oh, you know, I'm feeling pretty prickly if I do say so myself, sir.
- 0:55SPEAKER_06: Just basking here in the desert sun as a desert dweller that I am.
- 0:59SPEAKER_06: How about you, Sandy Residents?
- 1:03SPEAKER_05: This is this was great.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: Everything on Twitter has been fantastic the last week.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: Um, but especially yesterday, which was Tuesday, um, Texas Tech took over Twitter and all because of one.
- 1:18SPEAKER_05: Well, it wasn't really one, it was it was it was TCU's um their athletic director and their recruiting coordinator.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: And you just saw the power of Texas Tech Twitter unfold on Tuesday.
- 1:31SPEAKER_05: It was absolutely magnificent.
- 1:33SPEAKER_06: It was amazing, dude.
- 1:34SPEAKER_06: So, yeah, let's just go ahead and start there then, man.
- 1:36SPEAKER_06: I mean, great news with the$25,000 per uh player on the football team.
- 1:43SPEAKER_06: That's just a fabulous commitment from the boosters, a fabulous commitment from the the fan base and the program.
- 1:48SPEAKER_06: Showing that Texas Tech is serious, man.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: Like we're we're willing to adapt to the situation rather than whine about it, because I will say that TCU did a lot of whining about it instead of adapting to it, if you ask me.
- 2:00SPEAKER_05: Who would have thought that players getting paid$25,000, 100 players, including walk-ons, including uh, you know, end-of-the-bench guys, including the freshmen that are not normally going to get these NIL deals, would piss off so many TCU people, especially a recruiting coordinator at another school.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: Like, this is what you want these guys to get.
- 2:25SPEAKER_05: You want these guys to get money, you want these guys to be able to pay for stuff, uh, especially if they're a walk-on per se, you know, that is not getting a scholarship, that is not getting their classes paid for.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: And now with this, you know, 100 2.5 million dollar collective deal uh powered by the Matador Club.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, who would have thought that'd piss you off?
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: You know, uh it's it's it's kind of sick, you know, to to it's just straight up jealousy from TCU for real, man.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: And this it's it's just a nice chunk of change for a college kid, you know.
- 3:01SPEAKER_06: This this means they don't have to worry about you know getting an extra job, like apparently Donovan Smith was.
- 3:06SPEAKER_06: And obviously, some of these guys have kids, so it helps with child support, you know, supporting their children and all that.
- 3:11SPEAKER_06: So I you really have to be kind of uh low, low rung there to really hate on something like that because it's this isn't exactly like you know, they're gonna go out and buy a Lamborghini kind of money.
- 3:22SPEAKER_06: This is just they don't have to worry about expenses kind of money, which which is what the which is what's so great about the NIL whenever we look at it that way.
- 3:29SPEAKER_06: Whenever I look at this tweet and you know, seeing it from a a rival recruiter, all this says to me is I feel threatened, and I'm scared that my school won't be able to respond to this.
- 3:43SPEAKER_06: So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to be reactionary, let my emotions get the best of me, and broadcast over Twitter unprofessionally ripping on the competition.
- 3:53SPEAKER_06: That's just something professionals don't do when they're this serious about it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_06: You know, light jab is one thing, but this he was legitimately frustrated with the situation.
- 4:02SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, and and it it tells it all in the tweet because this is exactly the mentality that Joey McGuire has versus the mentality that TCU has.
- 4:12SPEAKER_05: Because this guy, Brian Carrington, who is the TCU uh recruiting director, uh, you know, he was the one who kind of put out the thread, um, you know, basically complaining about it.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: He said, I urge you to ask these schools to quantify your brand potential as an individual entity.
- 4:30SPEAKER_05: See, there's so much wrong with that.
- 4:32SPEAKER_05: First off, Texas Tech and Joey Maguire want a team.
- 4:37SPEAKER_05: They want, they don't want NIL to come between the players, they don't want that to happen.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: So, with everybody getting a piece of the pie here, everybody starts at a higher baseline than you do everywhere else.
- 4:50SPEAKER_05: And this guy seems to think oh, only you can accept this opportunity and nothing else.
- 4:57SPEAKER_05: He's like$25,000, that's it, that's all you're getting.
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: It's like, no dipshit.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: That's just where you're starting at Texas Tech.
- 5:05SPEAKER_05: That's where you're starting as a walk-on at Texas Tech is at$25,000.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: So, you know, on top of everything else, we've seen Taj Brooks come out with stuff.
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: I think Sir Rodrigue Thompson has like a clothing line now with bar stool.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: And so, you know, these guys are willing to make other NIL deals on top of this uh this$25,000 contract from the Madendor Club, and also it's a contract, so the Texas Tech players are doing community service for this money, which is none of this is bad, and and yet TCU and Brian Carrington just can't understand it.
- 5:40SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 5:41SPEAKER_06: I I think this is a very positive thing for NIL.
- 5:43SPEAKER_06: You know, a lot of people are scared of just uh these kids being tossed millions of basically buying players.
- 5:47SPEAKER_06: I don't think that's what this is.
- 5:48SPEAKER_06: This is just I think this is just taking care of your roster.
- 5:51SPEAKER_06: And hey, I mean, it's a great selling put to put out there that hey, don't you won't have to worry about money here, you'll be taken care of.
- 5:56SPEAKER_06: Um, and that's great, but it's not like it's not like they're walking around saying we're gonna put you in a uh a brand new uh F 350 if you come to Texas Tech.
- 6:04SPEAKER_06: That's not what's happening here.
- 6:05SPEAKER_05: This is just straight up we're gonna cover your and some are some of course some of our, you know, the I'm just defending the baseline, yeah.
- 6:12SPEAKER_06: So yeah, and and obviously that that obviously was was bad enough, and like I said, I I I kind of understand it from a fact since that like if I was a fan of a team that wasn't announcing they're doing this yet, I'd be frustrated and I'd be threatened.
- 6:24SPEAKER_06: And you could definitely see a direct competitor like TCU who doesn't necessarily have much on Texas Tech as a school, so it's just you could definitely see where the where the lashing out there, but obviously the real vitriol that came from Texas Tech that really united us was wherever you had to go so far as to rip on Lubbock as a town, you know.
- 6:44SPEAKER_06: It obviously that's that's not new to Texas Tech fans, but to see a professional rip on a community of people like he did, it's just wrong, it's just unprofessional.
- 6:54SPEAKER_06: It just shows how little of a man you're acting when you're doing that.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I there and and and to call it you know the desert thing, we've heard it a million times, you know, people that don't know West Texas people that have never been to Lubbock, they think, Oh, what's out there?
- 7:08SPEAKER_05: Tumbleweeds and nothing.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: And it's like it's just not there.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: There are, yeah, but it's yeah, and there's and there's dirt, but it's not a freaking desert.
- 7:20SPEAKER_05: Have you been to the desert?
- 7:21SPEAKER_05: The desert, there's nothing, there's sand, there's not like the it's just it it blows my mind.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, I guess would would people have like uh just a false sense of what West Texas and Lubbock is, and you know, the the good part about Texas Tech fans and Texas Tech Twitter and everybody is we're just here to embrace, you know, the what they call hate, you know, like they're gonna hate calling us uh oh you're isolated, oh you're in the desert.
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: Uh we're just gonna embrace that and put a freaking cactus by our name on Twitter and just embrace it and love it and understand and respect everything because we know what our community is about, we know what our university is about, TCU doesn't.
- 8:04SPEAKER_05: And if they think calling Lubbock a desert is is getting at the school and gonna make kids, you know, think differently about where they go to school at and play football for, it just isn't gonna work.
- 8:17SPEAKER_06: I mean, just the irony of taking a dig at Lubbock by stating that it's there, there's a potential cap on a town like Lubbock versus Fort Worth, you know, Forth Worth.
- 8:29SPEAKER_06: Um so it could because he's saying that you know the potential in a Fort Worth is to earn you a lot more money.
- 8:36SPEAKER_06: I mean, obviously he's just saying because it's it's a bit bigger metroplex, it's a large city.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: But the difference is the what Lubbock is a college town, Fort Worth is not, and the main difference between the two isn't necessarily population, it's that the city of Lubbock revolves around the university, you know, it lives and breathes Texas Tech.
- 8:52SPEAKER_06: You go to Fort Worth, you can go your whole life living there without really feeling the influence of TCU whatsoever.
- 8:58SPEAKER_06: They're not gonna be throwing on commercials of TCU players advertising local businesses, it's just not gonna happen like it will in Lubbock.
- 9:05SPEAKER_06: You just won't see the same kind of promotion coming out of Lubbock businesses because Lubbock businesses feel connected to the university that represents their town and their region.
- 9:14SPEAKER_06: Fort Worth just doesn't have that.
- 9:16SPEAKER_06: TCU just doesn't have that.
- 9:19SPEAKER_06: That is a city that that is just a regular city in other in the grand scheme of things when you talk about it, it's like Austin here, uh, here in Austin, but maybe even more so.
- 9:27SPEAKER_06: So it's just it's just kind of ironic to act like you won't be able to sell yourself in a college town, but you'll be able to sell yourself at a college not in a college town.
- 9:36SPEAKER_06: It just seems like silly math to me.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, and it's funny because you know, SMU and TCU have both struggled with this, being, you know, uh they they put Dallas on their uniform, though they put Fort Worth's team in their bio or whatever.
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: But UT, Texas Tech, OU, ANM all have a bigger, a bigger alumni base in your city.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: So sorry, man.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: Uh you're the fifth, you're the fifth best.
- 10:01SPEAKER_05: You're the fifth best school in in Fort Worth, even though you're located there.
- 10:05SPEAKER_05: I I just don't see what TCU has to brag about when it comes to being located in Fort Worth.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, sure, you you can go to some local DFW high school games easier than what we can, but guess what?
- 10:20SPEAKER_05: All these college programs are freaking rich now.
- 10:22SPEAKER_05: And if and if the recruiting director wants to go see a game in Dallas Fort Worth, he hops on their private jet and goes.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: So it's just like it's it's confusing to me why they think that's such a brag about location, because it really isn't.
- 10:38SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 10:39SPEAKER_06: It's just kind of ironic for the for the this guy to be ripping on his boss's town, ripping on his boss's alma mater, ripping on his father, his boss's father's uh uh team and all that.
- 10:50SPEAKER_06: So it's just it just like I said, to wrap this all up, the man feels threatened.
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: He feels uh, and just to be to go on Twitter and act like a a teenager, uh, that that got jail you know rejected by a girl or whatever, it's just dude, come on, grow up, let's let's move on, kind of thing.
- 11:05SPEAKER_06: So that's just kind of a funny thing with that.
- 11:07SPEAKER_06: And obviously, we got to use that to talk about our awesome alumni base giving to our players with the NIL deal.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: It's true, and we didn't even talk about them not even selling us tickets.
- 11:17SPEAKER_05: So, oh, you're right, dude.
- 11:19SPEAKER_05: It's it's uh it's this stuff, it's so confusing to me because I understand, you know, TCU's athletic director.
- 11:29SPEAKER_05: Obviously, TCU doesn't sell tickets, they don't, they did they haven't for a long time.
- 11:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, sure, they maybe have in certain years where they have ended up being top five or whatever, you know, those those Trayvon Boykin years and uh, you know, winning the Big 12.
- 11:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's when you saw, but other than that, TCU is a terrible tiny fan base and they don't sell out their stadium.
- 11:50SPEAKER_05: And so, you know, when they're you go to their website and you look at you know single game ticket purchases, you're not allowed to buy the Texas Tech game.
- 12:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, you're allowed to buy Oklahoma, you're allowed to buy Oklahoma State, you're allowed to buy uh basically every other home game except for Texas Tech.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: And there's a clear reason for that, and it's what we saw in basketball last year with us taking over UT's arena in basketball.
- 12:16SPEAKER_05: Um, and they don't want that to happen to uh to to their football team or to their basketball team for that matter, because they mentioned they're not gonna do that for basketball either.
- 12:26SPEAKER_05: So the I guess there's two different ways of thinking.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: If you're the TCU athletic director here, you say no, we're not gonna sell these Texas Tech tickets, and that's going to piss off the Texas Tech fan base, and they are going to buy tickets and put money in our pocket.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: That's one line of thinking.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: Another line of thinking is just hey, maybe we can prevent them from doing this and buying uh tickets to you know, not get any Texas Tech fans there and not say anything, not really understanding how crazy our fan base is and how and the the measures we are gonna go to buy tickets for this because it's like your typical, you know, you can't have it, but I really, really want it, you know, sort of deal.
- 13:13SPEAKER_05: So it's it's hilarious what Texas Tech fans have been doing, uh, you know, going through buying their little preseason mini ticket package just for the Texas Tech game, uh, or or you know, looking on vivid seats, just trying to find some some seats to this game because now we're more motivated than ever to take over their stadium.
- 13:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, man, you you put it perfectly, and it definitely mirrors what happened uh with the UT game in basketball, like you said, you know, because they tried to lock us out as well, or they were they were noticing that so many Texas Tech fans were purchasing the tickets that they were just like, Well, we we can't have this kind of embarrassment in our own arena, so we're gonna try to to filter out the tech the tech buyers.
- 13:54SPEAKER_06: Um, and the same thing, well, now even even more restrictive going on here with TCU.
- 13:58SPEAKER_06: Um, and you I like the way you put it that you know, we're so passionate that they were crazy that we're gonna find a way to get in, but you just made it a lot harder, and I still think that's kind of scummy.
- 14:06SPEAKER_06: I I don't I it's kind of on isn't the whole point of being at the same conference is that we get to travel to each other's stadiums and watch each other play.
- 14:13SPEAKER_06: Uh and to just uh attempt to lock out and single out a fan base, I think is scummy, I think it's cowardly.
- 14:20SPEAKER_06: I don't care if any TCU fan wants to defend it by saying, Oh, it's just smart business, you know.
- 14:24SPEAKER_06: But it's it's not smart business.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: I'm literally preventing yourself from getting more money, yeah.
- 14:30SPEAKER_06: It's just 4D chest, and you tech fans wouldn't get it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_06: And like I that's totally the vibes I'm getting from their fan, all 12 of their fans right now.
- 14:38SPEAKER_06: Um, it's just I and that's a conference, it's just kind of like I wish kind of the conference would be able to step in and be like, you can't do this, this is stupid, you know.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: Why are you singling out a team?
- 14:49SPEAKER_06: Um, but like you said, man, I definitely want to go now.
- 14:52SPEAKER_06: Um, and I definitely want to try to find a way to go since we uh we got family and friends up there, so I gotta get up there to support the cactus army we got brewing uh right now on Twitter.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: And I I saw one tweet that our buddy Travis sent me, and it was it was some uh it was a TCU fan, and basically they were like, uh, tech fans are are mad that TCU doesn't want to sell them single game tickets.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: Yes, a school with less than 10,000 undergrads and 100,000 living alumni does want to keep a giant public school with a massive alumni base in DFW out of their home stadium.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: What is surprising about that?
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: It's not surprising, first off.
- 15:34SPEAKER_05: We've been doing this for a while, uh, but it's just sad, it's just pitiful that you can't sell out your own stadium.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: And yeah, you could talk about the alumni base being small, the fact that they only have 10,000 students there at a time at the university.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: You could talk about all that.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: It's still pitiful, it's still hilarious that you can't sell out your arena.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: And I mean, if I'm the athletic director there or the head of ticket sales, I mean, that's a tough freaking job there.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: And it shouldn't be because they're in a bigger, you know, more populated area, but they still struggle because they're TCU.
- 16:12SPEAKER_05: And this led to a bigger conversation that I had with them just about how TCU adds nothing to the Big 12.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, it really doesn't.
- 16:20SPEAKER_05: They they don't, uh, in terms of like the TV deal, everything, because they have such a small fan base, such a small alumni base, they are not putting eyes on screens watching their games, they're just not.
- 16:35SPEAKER_06: You know, any anytime the conversation that comes up, if you could kick one team out of the Big 12, who would it be?
- 16:40SPEAKER_06: You know, a lot of people usually go to like West Virginia just for being kind of an odd man.
- 16:44SPEAKER_06: No, it's absolutely TCU.
- 16:46SPEAKER_06: It's 100% TCU, and they they really don't bring the fandom that you want in a conference that we want to live in.
- 16:52SPEAKER_06: You know, we want to live in a conference that has huge, passionate fan bases that interact with each other on a daily basis and over Twitter and all that, and TCU just can't provide that.
- 17:01SPEAKER_06: And it's kind of crazy that the one man completely and solely responsible for getting them into the Big 12 was fired last season.
- 17:10SPEAKER_06: They have a statue of him outside their stadium, and then it's just it's just ironic and to see that to see all this kind of falling apart here, and it's just frustrating knowing that TCU with their, you know, apparently I saw the statistic that only they they probably wouldn't be able to fill up their whole stadium with the uh the amount of tech the TCU fans in Fort Worth.
- 17:30SPEAKER_06: So it's just that's pathetic, and it's it's unbelievable.
- 17:33SPEAKER_06: And I I I they just frustrate me.
- 17:36SPEAKER_06: And obviously they're a rival and all that, so it just is all part of the fire, right?
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I mean I I enjoyed the rivalry, I enjoy the game.
- 17:43SPEAKER_05: I you know, I enjoyed, you know, especially when we win, uh, but it's also you know, just a just a fact of the matter that TCU doesn't provide much for a conference, and if they weren't located where they're located, uhka in Texas, uh, they would not be a part of the Big 12.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: They just they wouldn't.
- 18:01SPEAKER_05: I mean, the whole reason we added them is so other teams could not add a Texas team.
- 18:06SPEAKER_06: So I mean it's it's easy, dude.
- 18:08SPEAKER_06: It's it's easy to it's not a TCU problem, it's a small private school and a major metro problem.
- 18:14SPEAKER_06: You can just you can go all across the country.
- 18:16SPEAKER_06: Look at Vanderbilt in Nashville.
- 18:18SPEAKER_06: No one in Nashville cares about Vanderbilt and they can't build their stadium either except for visiting fans.
- 18:22SPEAKER_06: Look at Northwestern in Chicago.
- 18:23SPEAKER_06: You think Chicago cares about Northwestern at all?
- 18:25SPEAKER_06: I mean, come on, there's very rare examples of where the city will actually care.
- 18:30SPEAKER_06: And I mean, even even USC is a stretch right now with how that much uh fans they can get into their stadium.
- 18:36SPEAKER_06: So it's just it's not necessarily a TCU problem, it's it's a private school problem, and they just they just can't bring in the non-student fans like state schools can, and that's that's that's the way it should be because usually the state school tries to represent the region they're they're in more so than the private schools.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: To me, there's a little easier of a fix than you think for that.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: You know, you just embrace the school, and what Brian Carrington is saying is don't embrace the school, think about you as an individual and not associate yourself with our university, and that's just wrong.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: That's not how you build a good team, a build build a good culture, build that you're doing it wrong.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: So uh that's I mean, I guess that's all I really had to say about TCU.
- 19:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think it's hilarious, you know, the the 12 fans that are coming out saying that this doesn't bother them when they see the entire football team, the entire Texas Tech Twitterverse, all tweeting out a freaking cactus because your recruiting coordinator called us a desert.
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: I think that's hilarious, and I think that just shows the passion that we have.
- 19:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I think that's I think that's a great place to end it, is just saying that look at how we can rally behind something and look how look how much we care.
- 19:49SPEAKER_06: You know, look it just it was just a cactus, and then every single uh tech fan on Twitter and player tweeted it now that the school's running with promotional material with it, and it's just like they can never have that, they will never have that, and no matter what they do.
- 20:02SPEAKER_06: So it's just that's what's so unique about a school like Texas Tech, and that's why we love it, man.
- 20:05SPEAKER_06: And Lubbock and West Texas and and beyond.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: So we're we're really lucky, and then we're we just got to keep feeding that fire.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: TCU, Baylor, Texas, Texas AM, Alabama, Clemson.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: You know what they don't have right now is a 200 million dollar renovation coming to their football stadium.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: Uh powered by Cody Campbell and a bunch of other notable alumni with a lot of money.
- 20:31SPEAKER_05: Um, Texas Tech and Jones ATT Stadium is getting a massive upgrade finally to the South End zone.
- 20:40SPEAKER_05: This has been a project that has gone on for or been talked about at least for years.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Um, and and finally, in this new era of college football, Texas Tech is here to give a better product to their fans, and that is uh the new South End Zone Stadium uh continuing on to the practice facility.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: It it looks amazing.
- 21:07SPEAKER_05: It does, it looks amazing.
- 21:10SPEAKER_06: It looks spectacular, man.
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: And like you were saying, it's that that begins construction here at the end of the season, right after we beat OU.
- 21:16SPEAKER_06: They're gonna start tearing down that old box uh right behind where the band stands and where the old double T is, and and start building our new uh palace there, man.
- 21:24SPEAKER_06: And this is a project that's been needed, that is 100% the most dated side of the stadium that needed some really needed some work.
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: It's kind of an eyesore at this point, uh compared to the rest of the stadium, which is gorgeous and has aged flawlessly.
- 21:36SPEAKER_06: So it's been 100% needed, man.
- 21:38SPEAKER_06: And like you, I like that you brought up that you know, these these donors have really committed to ushering in this new era of college football because we are proving that we're we want to run with the best, you know, where we're spending this new super conference level money that even teams in the Big Ten and the SEC would would look at the bill and go, I don't think we could do that right now.
- 21:58SPEAKER_06: So it's just that we we got some serious.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: Passionate fans that really want to give their resources to their alma mater.
- 22:03SPEAKER_06: And this is really showing.
- 22:04SPEAKER_06: And I don't think this happens with Matt Wells.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: I think this is galvanized through uh this new fan support is galvanized through through Joey McGuire.
- 22:12SPEAKER_06: He's just really been able to harness the excitement of the community that Matt Wells just unfortunately wasn't able to tap into.
- 22:19SPEAKER_06: So I think Kirby Hokut was smart in ditching Matt Wells and bringing in this this this lightning rod because it's it's needed right now.
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: We're about to go into this great unknown, and it's better to be you know trying hard to to save yourself rather than just letting yourself drift apart.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: Well, and I think both Kirby Hokutt, Lawrence Scuvenac, Joey McGuire, they all understand that this is a huge opportunity for Texas Tech to really become something in this new Big 12.
- 22:44SPEAKER_05: Uh, we've been saying that for you know, ever since Texas and OU left, but uh Baylor's just not gonna do this.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: Even Oklahoma State, it's gonna be tough to do something like this.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: West Virginia, you know, Iowa State's not gonna do something like this.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: It's it's this this money that Texas Tech has had, this big money that Texas Tech has had, has always been there, but it it's now coming to fruition.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: And we're seeing it, it started with the Womble 32 million dollar basketball practice facility after being good for what four straight years, five straight years.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: That is what our fan base and our donors and our notable alumni are willing to give to this university if we see some wins, and we didn't even have to see that for this football.
- 23:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's wild, it's wild.
- 23:35SPEAKER_06: It's been a big down year, it's been a big down decade plus for Texas Tech football.
- 23:40SPEAKER_06: And we're and we're doing this.
- 23:41SPEAKER_06: Do you think it kind of has something to do with the basketball?
- 23:43SPEAKER_06: Like, as I mean, they did the basketball dedication didn't really begin until we really started picking up Steam success-wise, you know.
- 23:51SPEAKER_06: Before it just they were there wasn't a whole lot of buzz around it, especially around building practice facilities and stuff.
- 23:57SPEAKER_06: Um, the USA is gorgeous, but other than that, there just wasn't a whole lot of shine there.
- 24:01SPEAKER_06: But once they started uh proving that tech can win at this sport, they're all the the boosters were like, All right, let's make sure we can submit this, and they did.
- 24:09SPEAKER_06: And I feel like that's kind of a bleed over because you know it's it's the wobble practice facility in football, too.
- 24:14SPEAKER_06: So I feel like it's kind of a bit of a blue bleed over.
- 24:16SPEAKER_06: These boosters are ready to really commit to tech athletics.
- 24:18SPEAKER_06: I think we were kind of in a point of of a trough the last decade, um, you know, project-wise.
- 24:24SPEAKER_06: And now here we are.
- 24:25SPEAKER_06: And why I think it's a bit of a renaissance.
- 24:27SPEAKER_06: I think it's a kind of a clear renaissance, actually.
- 24:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and and you know, as much as it kind of pains me to say, the coach in basketball helped too get that done.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: You know, Beard was a big uh, you know, let's let's improve this somehow, some way, wherever we can, whether that's new facilities, whether that's creating, you know, a student-based section that is wild, like the Raider riot and everything like that.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: You know, Beard had great ideas in terms of doing that and building up, you know, the fan base for that sport.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: And, you know, we can say that now, especially because we're beating his ass uh down there in Austin.
- 25:03SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, the football one I think was more driven by uh realignment, obviously.
- 25:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, you know, being uh just just the the opportunity that is there in front of us.
- 25:16SPEAKER_05: Cody Campbell has recognized that.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: He's he's the big money guys over there at Double Eagle are ready for this football team to finally put up a winning team because we're desperate for it.
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: It's been too long, it's been way too long for that.
- 25:32SPEAKER_05: A brand and a school like Texas Tech has been this poor at football, and now you have a guy at head coach that you can really get behind.
- 25:44SPEAKER_05: You know, Cliff, you could as much as we love Cliff, even still as a player, as a coach, he wasn't that guy to suck up to the donors and have that kind of, and I don't want to say suck up, but like, you know, just have that relationship and build that relationship with the donors and with the alumni and and bring in old players and uh you know, just really tie everything together and and build the brand and the culture.
- 26:11SPEAKER_05: Matt Wells didn't do that either, you know.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: So finally we're getting a guy who is ready to do that, and that the fan base is 100% behind.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, and so that's kind of the foot what led to this, you know, I think donation for football.
- 26:25SPEAKER_06: For sure, man.
- 26:26SPEAKER_06: I really think you kind of hit the the nail on the head saying that you were pretty fed up.
- 26:29SPEAKER_06: I think that's uh uh definitely a phrase we can use, and I think tech is lucky that we were still so supportive of our school because they really haven't been throwing us a lot of bones with tech football.
- 26:41SPEAKER_06: You know, I have had a many, many disappointing uh road trips to to watch Texas Tech football, and it's getting kind of old.
- 26:47SPEAKER_06: I'm not saying that my my support's going anywhere, but the this past decade, TechStech has finished ninth in a 10-team conference in total wins, and for Texas Tech, that's just completely unacceptable and it's inexcusable.
- 27:01SPEAKER_06: And I'm just glad that we finally have someone to uh to build a foundation on for boosters to finally rally behind because we're we we wanted that, and seeing our success in basketball, I think it's kind of reignited uh that we we should care, you know, and we will care about what happens to football.
- 27:17SPEAKER_06: Uh, so I I I love seeing it.
- 27:18SPEAKER_06: I think next is we got to make sure that we take care of baseball as well, and I think that is down the pipe.
- 27:22SPEAKER_06: You know, they definitely committed to the practice facility there too.
- 27:24SPEAKER_06: But we're talking about football right now, man.
- 27:26SPEAKER_06: I it's it's gorgeous, it's it's awesome, and it got national attention.
- 27:29SPEAKER_06: So, you know, we're doing something right whenever TechSech's on the headlines.
- 27:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and and also a thing we didn't mention earlier when it comes to the$25,000 investment.
- 27:38SPEAKER_05: Cody Campbell also mentioned that you know, this same sort of plan is gonna happen for basketball and baseball players as well to get those players a baseline 25k.
- 27:47SPEAKER_05: Whether it's 25k, I don't know, but you know, getting them something similar to where they're receiving, you know, some NIL money um, you know, is really cool to see.
- 27:56SPEAKER_05: But yeah, you're right.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: Baseball's next.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Rip Griffin Park uh has been needing an upgrade, and we could talk about that at a later time, potentially when that's announced.
- 28:06SPEAKER_05: I don't know if they're gonna announce that here in a year or so with how uh crazy these Texas Tech donors have been, you know, uh donating.
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: It's it's been awesome to see.
- 28:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, and just something that you're not gonna get from a lot of other fan bases.
- 28:20SPEAKER_05: And we're we're really lucky and we're really fortunate to have that.
- 28:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we got a couple of boon pickings now, and we're we're naming the uh the field after Cody Campbell.
- 28:27SPEAKER_06: I think it's much deserved.
- 28:28SPEAKER_06: It's kind of great to be uh as young as he is and have a name like that connected to such a project.
- 28:33SPEAKER_06: So what a what a what a great guy to uh be so committed to with the team he used to play on and is all in the modern, obviously.
- 28:38SPEAKER_06: So thank you, Cody Campbell.
- 28:39SPEAKER_06: Thank you, uh the Wobble family, and rock and roll, man.
- 28:41SPEAKER_06: I can't wait to see uh what this all uh leads to.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's really cool, it's really cool, actually.
- 28:46SPEAKER_05: Uh you mentioned that uh not with Cody Campbell, but with uh Coach Hambi, uh the O-line coach now.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: I was watching, I was re-watching 2008 when we beat Texas and just seeing Coach Hambi out there, just 2008.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: Like he was just there.
- 29:00SPEAKER_05: Like, I guess it was 15 years ago at this point, but like still, it was just there.
- 29:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that that stuff's so awesome, man.
- 29:08SPEAKER_06: I love I love bringing that bringing the former players back because you know they get it, they they understand what Tex Tech is and how to operate.
- 29:14SPEAKER_06: So I've loved this.
- 29:15SPEAKER_06: This this coaching staff has now I've never seen the energy like it before as a Texas Tech fan.
- 29:20SPEAKER_06: I know where you and I are both young in the grand scheme of things, uh, to for Texas Tech fandom, but dude, it's just I've never seen this before.
- 29:26SPEAKER_06: I've never seen them so plugged into the tech fan base and just wanting to be a part of the community.
- 29:30SPEAKER_06: Most of Tom Conn feels like they're just there to do their job, but not this squad.
- 29:33SPEAKER_06: They they definitely want to breathe it in as they go.
- 29:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they're definitely feeding into Joey's energy, which has been awesome to see.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: Um, so I guess next topic when when are Arizona and Colorado finally gonna get over here?
- 29:44SPEAKER_05: What's happening?
- 29:45SPEAKER_05: Dude, right?
- 29:45SPEAKER_06: I mean, come on, the doors wide right open, but bro.
- 29:48SPEAKER_06: That's it's it's right there, it's ready for y'all to walk right through.
- 29:52SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, dude, great, great little segue you got there.
- 29:54SPEAKER_06: And as I'm sure many of y'all heard, uh, the Tex uh the big the Texas tech, yeah.
- 29:59SPEAKER_06: The Pac-12 and the Big 12 were apparently in the in negotiations of merger talks or partnership deal.
- 30:06SPEAKER_06: And apparently those have fallen through the cracks.
- 30:09SPEAKER_06: Both conferences allegedly gave different reasons as to why it fell through the cracks.
- 30:14SPEAKER_06: According to the Big 12 source, it stated that the Pac 12 uh couldn't bring enough to the table to satisfy what the Big 12 wanted to do, and the Pac 12 gave a reason saying that, well, the Big 12's contract negotiations aren't open yet.
- 30:27SPEAKER_06: So I feel a little more confident in one of those answers than the other.
- 30:30SPEAKER_06: I think the Big 12 one sounds a little better.
- 30:32SPEAKER_06: It sounds like the Big 12 was really the one that walked away, not necessarily the PAC.
- 30:35SPEAKER_06: So I think that word that puts us in a nice position of strength going forward.
- 30:38SPEAKER_06: What did you take it from that?
- 30:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it it's funny seeing the national media the differences, you know, from you you have to look at where the publication is and who's reporting what, who they work for, all that type of stuff.
- 30:52SPEAKER_06: That was part of ESPN, by the way.
- 30:54SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, yeah.
- 30:55SPEAKER_05: I I know CBS and Dennis Dodd uh has been kind of on the on the more pro Big 12 reporting as of lately.
- 31:03SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, he uh Dennis Dodd reported that it was the Big 12 that ended up walking away from these negotiations.
- 31:09SPEAKER_05: And even I I listened to our good buddy Stewie Mandel and uh and uh uh Bruce Feldman talk about this as well on their podcast, and they mentioned, yeah, it was the Big 12 uh that walked away.
- 31:21SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's just kind of it's funny seeing um just just the differences in reporting and the differences uh obviously opinion is huge in in news and and presenting the news nowadays, but um you know it's it's especially prevalent in this kind of thing um where you're really getting opinions from people that work for ESPN and people that work for Fox and people that work for even CBS, you know, could be having because we don't know about all these televis television negotiations.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: We don't.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: We we don't know.
- 31:56SPEAKER_05: Maybe TCU is trying to get in on the Big 12 and try to maximize that, and that's why they're getting fed that information, you know.
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: It's just it's it's hard to fully understand what's going on unless you're in these meetings.
- 32:08SPEAKER_05: And you you kind of take everything, at least I do, with a grain of salt, every piece of reporting.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, people are clinging to kind of what they want to hear at this.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, uh, we'll retweet something that says, hey, Arizona wants to join the Big 12, uh, you know, because we do want that to happen.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: We think that would be great.
- 32:25SPEAKER_05: We think that would destroy the Pac-12, and that's what we want to see and want to hear.
- 32:29SPEAKER_05: And so, um, you know, all this to kind of say I'm not gonna believe anything until it happens.
- 32:36SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean that great, great roll-up there, man.
- 32:39SPEAKER_06: And it's the the TV networks are really what's heavily influencing what's going on.
- 32:44SPEAKER_06: I don't think I have to explain that to any of y'all.
- 32:46SPEAKER_06: Y'all get it.
- 32:47SPEAKER_06: It's why OU and UT are going to the SEC is because the SPN's about to drop a bag on them.
- 32:51SPEAKER_06: And same goes for the for the Big Ten.
- 32:53SPEAKER_06: And but I you know, a lot of people want to connect reporters to the to the network saying that you know they're out there doing their dirty work.
- 33:01SPEAKER_06: I still think that kind of stuff is just a kind of above their head.
- 33:04SPEAKER_06: I mean, they're usually just kind of beat riders, just there to to cover what's going on and what they can see, not necessarily what uh big mud put big uh bald-headed pants together at a big desk and the CBS office is really relaying.
- 33:18SPEAKER_06: Um, but you know, CBS is actually an interesting player because you know they don't they're losing the SEC, they don't have any college uh conference under the name anymore once their deal rolls out.
- 33:26SPEAKER_06: So, I mean, you could definitely see CBS wanting to get involved with either the Big 12 or the Pac-12 and whatever they want to turn that into.
- 33:32SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, I you know, my bias and what I want to happen wants to say the Big 12 is still in a good position to pack to poach the pack.
- 33:42SPEAKER_06: Um, but obviously I think we we gotta accept that there could be a reality where the Pac-12 does stay together and does either just roll with the 10 or try to uh take some G5 teams.
- 33:51SPEAKER_06: But I just struggle to put in my head what schools Stanford and Cal would want to add to the Pac-12 on that side of the country.
- 34:01SPEAKER_06: I just can't do it.
- 34:02SPEAKER_06: And whatever you're reading articles that say their best options are schools like SMU, you know they're in big trouble because either the Big 12 wants no part of SMU, and we could have them anytime we want, and we don't want them uh for a lot of reasons.
- 34:14SPEAKER_06: Kind of like we just spent the first half of this episode ripping on TCU.
- 34:17SPEAKER_06: Talk about all the problems you have with TCU and then make it even worse, and that's SMU.
- 34:21SPEAKER_06: So it's just uh I don't see the Pac-12 as having a whole lot of options, so I think that kind of puts pressure on the teams to want to bounce and go to the Big 12.
- 34:28SPEAKER_06: And I do think it will happen.
- 34:30SPEAKER_06: Uh, maybe not immediately, maybe not this year, maybe not in for a couple of years, but I do see it happening.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and there, I mean, there's rumors every other day that Colorado's meeting with their border regents and you know, potentially thinking about switching over to the Big 12.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: It could happen tomorrow.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: Who knows?
- 34:45SPEAKER_05: It could not happen at all.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: Who really knows?
- 34:47SPEAKER_05: But we're seeing people, a bunch of different people reporting different things.
- 34:51SPEAKER_05: Um, and so I like I said, I'm not gonna believe anything until I see it, until that Houston Chronicle article pops up that says, Hey, Texas know you are are leaving for the SEC, you know, something like that.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: That's what I'll believe it.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: And until then, everything's just speculation at this point.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Um, it's fun speculation, you know it is, it's a hell of a drug.
- 35:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly.
- 35:12SPEAKER_05: You know, you get kind of addicted, you see, hey, Arizona, uh, the the top dog donor in Arizona is meeting with uh, I don't know, god Lord Scubenac or something, and it's like, oh shit, here it goes.
- 35:28SPEAKER_05: But no, it's fun, it's fun to talk about.
- 35:31SPEAKER_05: I uh, but again, it's just kind of like everybody relax.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: It's probably gonna take a little more time, yeah, for sure.
- 35:38SPEAKER_06: And it didn't it didn't go that fast with the Big 12, you know.
- 35:41SPEAKER_06: It took what's like 60 days to come out and say that uh we're adding these three these four teams, and I mean I that they put us in a great position, so I I just don't see that same outcome for the pack because everyone kind of keeps connecting back to what their best option is.
- 35:56SPEAKER_06: The best option San Diego State, and while that might be a solid ad, you know, the Aztecs love the mascot, love the brand.
- 36:02SPEAKER_06: I think the Aztec thing is cool as hell.
- 36:05SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's that's just one.
- 36:08SPEAKER_06: I don't think, and I think that would be hard pressed to find one that's even close to that.
- 36:11SPEAKER_06: And obviously, yes, uh, the San Diego State doesn't really save the conference either.
- 36:15SPEAKER_06: So it's gonna be interesting to watch.
- 36:17SPEAKER_06: Uh, but as we know right now, it's nothing's happening.
- 36:20SPEAKER_06: But I do hope the buffs trot on over.
- 36:22SPEAKER_06: I do hope the wildcats, the sun devils do call us home.
- 36:25SPEAKER_06: And uh, Utah needs to go over themselves.
- 36:27SPEAKER_06: You're not that you're not that cool.
- 36:29SPEAKER_06: We we got the bigger brand in Utah.
- 36:31SPEAKER_06: We're just waiting.
- 36:32SPEAKER_06: We still want you, but like let's let's really quiet down.
- 36:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, let's simmer down, Utah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: You guys aren't you know Notre Dame out here, yeah.
- 36:39SPEAKER_05: For real.
- 36:40SPEAKER_06: The Big Ten's not calling, my friends.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: If they if the Big Ten does, I will eat a entire bar of soap and we can record it.
- 36:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay, we we will.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: We will I kind of hope that happens now.
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: But yeah, realignment is still the same, I'll say, from the from the last time we recorded.
- 36:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that was a hard-hitting segment of nothing right there.
- 37:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh, and that's everybody.
- 37:02SPEAKER_05: People have made a whole podcast about this.
- 37:05SPEAKER_05: Oh, sources are saying, sources are saying, but uh no, of course, we have no sources here.
- 37:11SPEAKER_05: Um, let's talk about the absolute buffoons over there at the Big 12 preseason poll.
- 37:17SPEAKER_05: Um, not voting anybody from Texas Tech on their all Big 12 football preseason team, um, and also putting us ninth in the preseason poll.
- 37:29SPEAKER_05: Um, listen, I know Texas Tech's been bad at football.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: I understand.
- 37:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, I understand it's a first-year head coach.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: I understand it's a guy that hasn't coached Power Five football yet.
- 37:38SPEAKER_05: Um, but if you're just overlooking the talent on this roster, I think you're a little crazy.
- 37:45SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm not saying we need to have six guys on the preseason poll.
- 37:49SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying we have to have three guys, but not having anybody on this preseason polls a little mind-blowing to me.
- 37:57SPEAKER_05: Um, preseason polls don't matter, we all know that, but still it's kind of a matter of uh, you know, respect thing.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: And um to not give certain players on our team the respect that they deserve and putting some of these other players on there a little pisses me off a little bit.
- 38:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, weren't we the only school that wasn't included?
- 38:16SPEAKER_05: I think so on this list.
- 38:18SPEAKER_06: Kansas got one, Kansas, yeah, and OU and OU only got like one player.
- 38:22SPEAKER_06: It was a bizarre list.
- 38:23SPEAKER_06: It was just definitely a head scratcher, man, because I definitely would have thought, you know, I would have thought we could have got at least one, like you were saying, man.
- 38:29SPEAKER_06: Like at least put Austin McNamara on there.
- 38:31SPEAKER_06: He's got to be the best buncer in the conference.
- 38:32SPEAKER_06: And I'm not just saying that as a red raider, not just saying that because he's a proud talking tech guest, but I do I do think he's the best bunser.
- 38:40SPEAKER_06: Did he wasn't he all Big 12 last season?
- 38:43SPEAKER_05: He was yeah, I think so.
- 38:44SPEAKER_05: And it's just like, how can you look at Michael Turk over there at Oklahoma and look at Austin McNamara and what they both done and say, yeah, the guy from OU, that's who we want.
- 38:55SPEAKER_05: It's like, no, clearly, McNamara was the biggest snub on this list.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: Um, but you could have even put Tyree Wilson on here, you could have put Mason Tharp at tight end.
- 39:06SPEAKER_05: Who's this guy from Baylor?
- 39:08SPEAKER_05: Ben Sims?
- 39:09SPEAKER_05: I'm sure he's a good player.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: I don't, I didn't know who he was before this poll came out.
- 39:15SPEAKER_05: And it's like, I know Mason Tharp's a second-year player.
- 39:17SPEAKER_05: You could have even put Baylor Cup, who's a transfer from AM.
- 39:20SPEAKER_05: That's not really that big of a snub.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna, you know, I'm not gonna pretend like putting Ben Sims over Mason Tharp is the biggest deal in the world, but um, you know, not having any defensive back, I know Texas Tech isn't known for their defensive backs, but man, you look at Rabbit, you look at Muddy Waters, you look at Ray Shad Williams, none of these guys got anything, you know.
- 39:41SPEAKER_05: And uh to me, the funniest thing about this poll is the quarterback is Spencer Sanders, and and and now I don't think Tyler Shuck or Donovan Smith or Baron Morton or whoever should be on this list.
- 39:53SPEAKER_05: I don't think that.
- 39:54SPEAKER_05: But I also, if Spencer Sanders is your choice for best quarterback in this league next year, I that just shows how wide open it is for the quarterbacks in this conference to really take that next step and be the guy.
- 40:08SPEAKER_06: I think it's just a veterancy thing.
- 40:10SPEAKER_06: I mean, what's this year for for uh he's in his senior by now?
- 40:14SPEAKER_06: Uh it's probably just a veterancy thing because I'm having a hard time recalling any quarterbacks that are coming back for other teams um that would really pop out in your head.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: So I think that's probably why there's a bunch of new ones, and that's kind of why I I guess Spencer Sanders is kind of a placeholder.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: And exactly I mentioned it.
- 40:31SPEAKER_05: The preseason poll doesn't freaking matter, nothing matters about the preseason poll.
- 40:35SPEAKER_06: Bulletin material, man.
- 40:36SPEAKER_06: Put that in the locker room.
- 40:37SPEAKER_06: Not a single one of y'all were good enough to be on the say all that.
- 40:40SPEAKER_06: So make sure you get out there and prove them wrong.
- 40:42SPEAKER_06: Dang it.
- 40:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so uh yeah, I just thought it was kind of funny not having even Austin McNamara on there.
- 40:49SPEAKER_05: Kind of pissed me off.
- 40:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, putting us ninth, I think, is classic.
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: Classic, classic in there for years.
- 40:57SPEAKER_05: Classic.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: It's I'm fine with it, it makes sense.
- 41:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we've been really crappy at football.
- 41:02SPEAKER_05: I get it.
- 41:04SPEAKER_05: Um, I I think some people in this poll had us 10th below Kansas.
- 41:08SPEAKER_06: To me, that's ridiculous.
- 41:10SPEAKER_06: Um, I think that's like a new thing.
- 41:11SPEAKER_06: I think that's a new thing every summer is will Kansas finish last in the Big 12?
- 41:17SPEAKER_06: It's kind of like is Texas back?
- 41:19SPEAKER_06: It's like one of those now, I swear.
- 41:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you're really pulling a hamstring if you're thinking that Kansas is gonna finish 9th.
- 41:28SPEAKER_06: They're not gonna finish 9th, they're gonna finish 10th, and it's not gonna be ahead of us.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: I think Kansas has a decent thing going with Lightbull.
- 41:37SPEAKER_05: Do I think they're gonna win more than three games?
- 41:39SPEAKER_05: No, no, I don't, I don't, and that's and it's such a freaking process, man.
- 41:44SPEAKER_05: That that program is in the gutter, the gutter of college FPS programs.
- 41:50SPEAKER_05: It's not like I I hope they're better than what they have been because what they have been has been just the worst.
- 41:58SPEAKER_06: Sustain on the Big 12.
- 41:59SPEAKER_05: It's the worst to watch Kansas and be like, oh, you guys have Kansas in your conference, and you're like, you know what, you're kind of right.
- 42:08SPEAKER_05: Yes, we do, indeed.
- 42:10SPEAKER_05: But you know, I I guess I'm you know, TCU's put it seventh, West Virginia at eighth.
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: Both of those uh had 149 votes and 147 votes, and then you get Texas Tech at 119.
- 42:22SPEAKER_05: To me, that should be closer.
- 42:24SPEAKER_05: I I think Iowa State should be closer as well.
- 42:26SPEAKER_05: I know they have Matt Campbell, but they lost so much from their freaking team.
- 42:30SPEAKER_05: Kansas State is all of a sudden getting all the hype in the world to be the best team ever, uh, which I don't quite understand.
- 42:37SPEAKER_05: Um, Texas, of course, is going to be overblown in the preseason poll.
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, Baylor and Oklahoma State and Oklahoma deserve where they're put at.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: But, you know, to me, it should be tighter.
- 42:49SPEAKER_05: The voting should be tighter.
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of people are sleeping on us, which is fine.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: I get it.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: We've been terrible, first year head coach, everything in the world.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, I just I just believe in this team a little more than what these preseason polls are giving us.
- 43:04SPEAKER_06: Well, I think I think you and I will probably do an episode where we kind of break down what we think the Big 12 will look like and uh you kind of look at do a look ahead of what we think Techstech's gonna do on the schedule and take a you know, probably take a guess about which team is gonna score, like how many wins they're gonna they're gonna earn.
- 43:18SPEAKER_06: Um, whenever you first look at this, whenever we first look at the Big 12 as we move into the season, is it looks pretty wide open, and I know we say that a lot in the Big 12, but there's just so many unknowns, there's so many question marks, there's a lot of new coaches, there's a lot of new faces, and there's a lot of coaches that have only been in for two years or three years.
- 43:36SPEAKER_06: So it's just we don't know what to rely on yet, other than just the basics of oh, you're just gonna have a crap load of talent, so they're gonna be good.
- 43:44SPEAKER_06: So it other than that, it's wide open.
- 43:47SPEAKER_06: And so I think it's be a lot of fun.
- 43:48SPEAKER_06: And whenever we say wide open right now, I mean that's a great thing for Texas Tech because first year coach, you're gonna want a whole lot of uncertainty certainty whenever you're being picked to only win five games.
- 43:57SPEAKER_06: So I definitely want some coin flips going our way.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Uh, so I definitely want things to get a little crazy to help us out.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: So we'll see how it unfolds.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: Like you said, we're gonna give a a full preview and everything like that as we get a little closer to football season, which is less than 50 days away.
- 44:13SPEAKER_05: Fantastic.
- 44:13SPEAKER_06: Let's go.
- 44:14SPEAKER_05: Uh excitement.
- 44:16SPEAKER_05: Excitement here.
- 44:17SPEAKER_05: I've never been more excited for a football season.
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: I I actually yeah, actually, since I've been a fan, I actually freshman year in college.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: No, no, because like I mean, we were yeah, 2014 we were going in with a lot of hype, but I was like a first-year Texas Tech fan, you know, at that point.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Like, I didn't, I unfortunately I didn't root for him in high school and everything like that.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: So I was just kind of going in.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: The most I knew was kind of what I heard from you, or what I heard from you know, some ESPN article or something like that, saying Davis Webb was gonna win the Heisman.
- 44:51SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah, I had a little bit of I was excited.
- 44:55SPEAKER_05: It was close, it almost panned out, but it didn't.
- 44:58SPEAKER_06: Uh season.
- 45:01SPEAKER_06: My god.
- 45:03SPEAKER_05: Um you know, we were all hyped for Cliff, everything was great, but Mahomes wasn't there yet our freshman year.
- 45:10SPEAKER_05: So he was, he just wasn't yet.
- 45:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but he wasn't like a name, and so uh, you know, I think this since I've been really paying attention to Texas Tech football, is is the most hype.
- 45:22SPEAKER_05: And I'm just curious to see how the team goes in every game.
- 45:26SPEAKER_05: Are we prepared?
- 45:28SPEAKER_05: Are we hitting hard?
- 45:29SPEAKER_05: Are we actually playing with effort, you know?
- 45:33SPEAKER_05: Because we didn't we saw a lot of that in Matt Wells and Cliff's tenure, where our team just wasn't showing up for games, and we just put out some absolute stinkers.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: And with everything Joey has said, everything we're recruiting, uh, it just seems like we're gonna be the complete opposite of that.
- 45:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I think that's a great der uh barometer.
- 45:54SPEAKER_06: Barometer, yeah, barometer.
- 45:57SPEAKER_06: Barometer, I think that's a great barometer of how you should judge this season is how hard does this team fight every single game, or are you just blown out in the first quarter and we give up, like we saw last season.
- 46:09SPEAKER_06: Um, uh because I think what our fan, I'm I'm insanely hyped as well.
- 46:13SPEAKER_06: You know me, I get I I I leech, I I I break the thermometer before every single football season thinking it's gonna be different this time.
- 46:19SPEAKER_06: And I really do think things are gonna be different, but I think as a fan base, we have to understand that even though this is a win now business for a guy like Joey McGuire, it's we have to understand how hard the schedule is looking at it first, and and talk about how you know he doesn't have his team yet, he doesn't have his uh culture fully you know built up into the players that he wants to have in the program yet.
- 46:40SPEAKER_06: I'm not saying these guys aren't ballers, they could they absolutely could be, and we can absolutely have a fantastic season.
- 46:45SPEAKER_06: But I just want people to understand that if we go out and and win six games or whatever, um, to be to be satisfied, to be happy with things the way things are going, because I think right now we're in foundation mode.
- 46:55SPEAKER_06: I think we're laying the cement before we build this house that will be hopefully something we're really proud of in a couple of years, and uh that's doing awesome things.
- 47:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're right.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: And I yeah, I hope that too, man.
- 47:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, we all do.
- 47:08SPEAKER_05: We uh we've seen how hungry this fan base is for some freaking wins, and uh, you know, I I hope Joey can can give that to us.
- 47:16SPEAKER_05: So um moving on, hashtag let's go.
- 47:20SPEAKER_05: Hashtag let's go.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Uh moving on to our final little bit before we get to song of the week.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: Just want to give a little update on some basketball stuff.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: Summer League saw some good stuff from our guys.
- 47:33SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Mac McClung was kind of the star of summer league.
- 47:37SPEAKER_05: It was great.
- 47:38SPEAKER_05: Um, he was constantly on NBA highlights.
- 47:42SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, obviously him being the viral sensation that he is that he was in high school.
- 47:46SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, he he he showed out, man.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: He played really well for that Golden State Summer League team.
- 47:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, I was really I caught a couple of the games.
- 47:54SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, he's playing with uh Texas Tech legend Jonathan Kaminga as well.
- 47:59SPEAKER_05: Uh uh it was fun.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: It was fun to see Mac.
- 48:03SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, I'm I'm I'm bound to believe after that performance that he's gonna at least get kind of a two-way deal or potentially be brought up onto a roster kind of like what he was last season.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: Um, and and you know, what a better organization to be with than the Warriors um right now.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: Uh so Mac Mac had a fantastic summer league.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: Um Adonis Arms had a really good summer league as well.
- 48:25SPEAKER_05: Um, kind of came out.
- 48:26SPEAKER_05: Uh didn't I know he was in the running for one of the two-way contracts with the Nuggets, didn't end up getting it, but then you know, the the last summer league game after it was announced that he wasn't the guy getting it, he went off for 20 points.
- 48:40SPEAKER_05: And you know, you you always root for a guy like Adonis.
- 48:42SPEAKER_05: He's he's gone through so much, he's been to so many different stops, and for him to be where he's at, um, it's really cool.
- 48:49SPEAKER_05: And uh, I think he'll get a shot too.
- 48:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah, just it's really cool seeing these guys just really grind it out here in the summer league, really grinding it out for their shot at the big league.
- 48:57SPEAKER_06: And it's just kind of a reflection of the of the basketball program is how we are just we're grinders, man.
- 49:01SPEAKER_06: We're we're not exactly just kind of you're given it, you have to go out in there and earn it.
- 49:05SPEAKER_06: So I I love I love seeing them bite tooth and nail to get on there, and I hope that we can get more and more guys into the NBA because with the success we're having on the court right now, it'd be really great to see them more guys playing in on the on the hardwood in the big time.
- 49:17SPEAKER_06: So hopefully these guys can get their shot with it.
- 49:19SPEAKER_06: But uh, like you said, man, at least it's fun to watch them get on the highlight reel.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, and uh the unfortunate part of summer league is uh the NBA is tough, and uh, you know, Bryson Williams played with Miami, he kind of fell on the rotation a bit, uh, didn't had some DNP's in the summer league, and uh you just hate to see it for that guy, and and it's just the process, it's it's what it is.
- 49:39SPEAKER_05: The NBA likes younger, uh, you know, they're gonna give got 19 and and 18 and 20-year-olds uh more of a shot, more of an opportunity than a 25-year-old Bryson Williams.
- 49:50SPEAKER_05: It's just kind of what it is, and uh it's an unfortunate part of it.
- 49:54SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, Bryson's gonna find a way somewhere, whether it's playing overseas, whether it's sticking to it and and grinding it out in the NBA, uh, playing G League, whatever he's doing.
- 50:03SPEAKER_05: Um, I he's he was great when he played, he just didn't get a lot of playing time, and that's that's kind of the unfortunate thing about this.
- 50:10SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 50:11SPEAKER_06: There's only so many spots on an NBA roster, it's not like the NFL, right?
- 50:14SPEAKER_06: Where they have a whole bunch of pack practice squad guys.
- 50:16SPEAKER_06: So it's uh just obviously hope for the best for these boys and uh get that money playing the game they love.
- 50:21SPEAKER_06: It's the best they can ask for, right?
- 50:23SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: Um, other basketball stuff.
- 50:26SPEAKER_05: We just sent off our boys for the TBT tournament.
- 50:30SPEAKER_05: The basketball tournament, the Air Raiders, got some practice time in.
- 50:34SPEAKER_05: We've been seeing some stuff on social media.
- 50:36SPEAKER_05: Um, if you haven't yet, go back and listen to our episode with Andrew Sorrels talking about the team and uh everything like that.
- 50:42SPEAKER_05: They're getting ready to play here this coming weekend.
- 50:45SPEAKER_05: Um, we are gonna be partying it up in Destin for my bachelor party.
- 50:48SPEAKER_05: So we're probably gonna miss a lot of these games, which is we gotta find a way to stream this thing.
- 50:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we'll we'll find a way to catch in uh and catch some of these games.
- 50:56SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, regardless, I think we got a good squad and I think we'll make it past this this round, this Wichita regional, whatever we're in.
- 51:05SPEAKER_05: Um, it looks like we are we were originally scheduled to play the Oklahoma State alumni team, the Stillwater team, but they backed out last minute, and now we are playing uh the B one Ballers is the team that the Air Raiders are playing first in the Wichita regional.
- 51:22SPEAKER_05: Um, B1 Ballers 0-1 all-time in TBT.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think they played in the last tournament and uh it didn't go so well for them.
- 51:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, I kind of looked at their roster.
- 51:33SPEAKER_05: Uh just a lot of guys, teams kind of cut comprised of a lot of like mid-major alumni, you know, they played at some smaller school, they got some Georgetown guys on there, but uh other than that, it's it's a lot of uh guys that played at smaller schools.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: So I don't think it should be an issue, especially with the talent that we have on the air raider team.
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: But uh regardless, it's gonna be fun as hell to watch this team.
- 51:54SPEAKER_06: I was about to say, man, this is the first time for us, right?
- 51:56SPEAKER_06: So it's gonna be really, really cool to see us partake in this.
- 51:59SPEAKER_06: And I think all the fans are just really excited to one get some freaking Tex Tech sports in their life since it's been dormant for the few months that is the summer, and two, see the guys that they love, you know, see the guys that really got a lot of us really falling in love with tech basketball, and to a lot of especially some college students, this be like the first guys they ever saw on the hardcore wearing the red and black, so and including guys like us.
- 52:19SPEAKER_06: So it's really, really cool to see this, and I can't wait to see uh where they can go with it.
- 52:23SPEAKER_06: It's obviously just a lot of fun.
- 52:24SPEAKER_06: Um, so and I think you're gonna smoke the first team, obviously.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: Well, it'd be surprise, man.
- 52:29SPEAKER_05: Uh winner gets a million bucks, so let's go! It's it's legit.
- 52:33SPEAKER_05: So these guys are gonna be, you know, they're playing their playing their butts off, trying to win this thing.
- 52:37SPEAKER_05: So um, I know the winner of our first game plays the winner of the aftershocks, which is the Wichita State alumni.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: Um, and we are D3, which is of course comprised of uh former D3 athletes.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: Um, I know we are D3 has gone kind of far in this tournament in the past.
- 52:55SPEAKER_05: Um, and I think Wichita State's put out a pretty good alumni team in this tournament.
- 52:59SPEAKER_05: So uh that'll be a fun second game if we can get past the B1 ballers.
- 53:03SPEAKER_05: Um, Norrence Odiase dropped out.
- 53:05SPEAKER_05: That was disappointing.
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: Um, it looked like he wants to focus full time on his podcast, Mind Bully Pod.
- 53:11SPEAKER_05: It's a it's a great podcast.
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: Uh we love Norren's.
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: It would have been awesome to see him play, but unfortunately, it's doesn't look like we're gonna see that.
- 53:19SPEAKER_06: What the heck?
- 53:20SPEAKER_06: No, man.
- 53:22SPEAKER_06: Well, still, I mean, uh, can't wait to share on the guys that are on the team.
- 53:25SPEAKER_06: And what a cool, what a cool idea for a tournament.
- 53:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I just can't wait to to watch, they'll be able to watch our guys partake in it and hopefully get that million dollars.
- 53:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 53:33SPEAKER_05: Different type of tournament, different type of basketball with the Elam ending.
- 53:36SPEAKER_05: It's it's really fun, it's just a fun deal that they do.
- 53:39SPEAKER_05: And uh hopefully our boys can get some get some paper uh for winning this damn thing.
- 53:44SPEAKER_05: So uh keep out rooting for them this weekend uh in Wichita.
- 53:48SPEAKER_05: Uh it's gonna be fun.
- 53:49SPEAKER_05: So, all right, man, that's what I got for today.
- 53:53SPEAKER_05: We can end her off with some songs of the week for the people.
- 53:57SPEAKER_05: We do the song of the week for the people.
- 54:00SPEAKER_05: Tristan, absolutely, what you got for the people?
- 54:02SPEAKER_06: Well, man, uh, as you kind of alluded to during the podcast, Steve and I are about to be long gone, both uh physically and mentally here uh starting tomorrow, I will say.
- 54:12SPEAKER_06: We'll be down in the sunshine states of Florida partying and and celebrating the other half of this podcast, the worst half, many would say.
- 54:22SPEAKER_06: So I'm gonna go with a tune that is a cheers to that, and the what it's kind of my my theme song for the trip.
- 54:29SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be I'm gonna do a big Nashville guy, definitely credit where it's due.
- 54:33SPEAKER_06: I really like him, and I know kind of a basic guy for me.
- 54:35SPEAKER_06: That's always like go indie country, go Texas country guy.
- 54:39SPEAKER_06: But it's Luke Combs and Brooks and Dunn.
- 54:43SPEAKER_06: You know, both of them love them both.
- 54:44SPEAKER_06: I think they both make fantastic movies, um, movies, music.
- 54:48SPEAKER_06: Um, I'm going with one too many.
- 54:51SPEAKER_06: I just think this is such a jam.
- 54:54SPEAKER_06: What a spectacular drinking song.
- 54:56SPEAKER_06: Um, so I got I had to go with a fun ass country drinking song with it.
- 55:00SPEAKER_06: One too many, Luke Combs, and Brooks and Dunn.
- 55:05unknown: I done hand planning.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: The can dance all in the first beer.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Hit me.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: Very nice, very nice.
- 55:16SPEAKER_05: There will be one too many beers drink this weekend.
- 55:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's gonna be a great time.
- 55:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, appreciate all y'all making the trip down here so we can party our butts off and get away from the ladies and just go crazy.
- 55:30SPEAKER_05: So I'm ready for it.
- 55:32SPEAKER_05: Um, mine's mine's gonna be a little a little more opposite than what you uh have given me.
- 55:38SPEAKER_05: I guess this is kind of the calm before the storm sort of thing.
- 55:42SPEAKER_05: Um, I went out, I think this was like the third or fourth episode of this podcast where uh you know I I mentioned that I'm a big Bonnie Vare guy.
- 55:51SPEAKER_05: Uh big Bonnie Vare guy.
- 55:54SPEAKER_05: Um super huge, always happen, super smooth, really different type of music, definitely more electronic.
- 56:05SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, just kind of puts you puts you in a in a fun, relaxed state.
- 56:10SPEAKER_05: And that's what I'm trying to do before you go listen to Tristan's song and turn up this weekend.
- 56:15SPEAKER_05: You can go listen to Hey Ma Bonnie Vare.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: Um, fantastic jam.
- 56:20SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, puts you, like I said, just in a in a state of just relaxation.
- 56:25SPEAKER_05: And that's what I want to be right before we leave tomorrow to go crazy on my bachelor party.
- 56:34SPEAKER_05: And so uh that's my song of the week is hey ma bonnie ver.
- 56:50SPEAKER_06: Well, that one is a lot slower, and it's gonna be no breaks starting tomorrow.
- 56:55SPEAKER_06: In in the in the in the wise words of Steve Five Winds Shark Sarkeesian.
- 57:00SPEAKER_06: So lose the Kansas Sarkeesian, yeah.
- 57:04SPEAKER_06: Okay, I mean all cats, no breaks, so um, dude, can't wait for tomorrow.
- 57:10SPEAKER_06: And I see you're drinking a beer right now, drinking an ice cold silver bullet.
- 57:14SPEAKER_06: But after that, I need you to start hydrating, okay?
- 57:16SPEAKER_06: Because I need you to just pour it all out tomorrow.
- 57:19SPEAKER_05: I send you and all the other boys a text on Monday saying start hydrating now because it's gonna be too late for water starting tomorrow.
- 57:25SPEAKER_05: So we are we are ready and we are prepared for this fun trip to uh the gator state.
- 57:32SPEAKER_05: So, all right, man.
- 57:34SPEAKER_05: Well, that is gonna do it here for this episode of Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 57:39SPEAKER_05: Um, we're gonna end it off with some plugs, like we always do.
