- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, listen, I'm excited because they are doing big things.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's Nashville related.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We'll talk about that in a few But Claire Bowen
- 0:09Speaker 1: and Charles Essen, but every time I talk to him.
- 0:11Speaker 3: He's like, Chip, yeah, that's what everybody knows me calling me.
- 0:14Speaker 3: But if you just read it off the credits, it's Charles.
- 0:19Speaker 1: First of all, does it feel good to be I
- 0:22Speaker 1: feel like you guys are never a part. But does
- 0:24Speaker 1: it feel good to be back together making magic?
- 0:27Speaker 4: Oh?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Absolutely? Yeah, you're right.
- 0:28Speaker 3: We're dear friends and we see each other all the time.
- 0:32Speaker 3: But it's different than getting to get on to get
- 0:34Speaker 3: up on that stage and play these Nashville songs with
- 0:38Speaker 3: Jonathan Jackson and Sam Palladio.
- 0:40Speaker 2: So it is a real reunion for all of us.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Why what was so special?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Because you guys have both If you go up and
- 0:47Speaker 1: down the IMDb page, y'all have stayed busy in your careers.
- 0:50Speaker 1: What's so special about that Nashville show and that Nashville
- 0:53Speaker 1: experience that y'all have kept it alive?
- 0:56Speaker 4: It's just wild. I mean, we're like family, and it
- 1:00Speaker 4: this town. Being in a town called Nashville filming a
- 1:03Speaker 4: show called Nashville. We were so lucky to be embraced
- 1:05Speaker 4: by people because you know, you understand why people would
- 1:08Speaker 4: be like, what are you gonna what are you gonna
- 1:09Speaker 4: do about my town? And on the town.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Don't make us look stupid, everybody said, and then we weren't.
- 1:13Speaker 4: We're already us, not you, and uh, I don't know.
- 1:18Speaker 4: There was just something about being here that it was
- 1:20Speaker 4: a very special time and we worked very hard all
- 1:22Speaker 4: the way through it, loved it and we don't want
- 1:24Speaker 4: to let it.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Go, and that's why we never left either. Claire and
- 1:27Speaker 3: I are still here. Sam is here for the most part.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Jonathan is here for the most part. I think he's
- 1:33Speaker 3: back working on General Hospital now. But there's also something
- 1:37Speaker 3: about Nashville that our characters went through a lot, and
- 1:40Speaker 3: they and endured a lot of suffering that life can bring.
- 1:45Speaker 3: But along the way, you know, found their way through
- 1:47Speaker 3: it with their faith, with their family, with their friends,
- 1:50Speaker 3: and with country music. And what we found is that
- 1:53Speaker 3: our audience, therefore, they attached on a deeper level because
- 1:58Speaker 3: they knew somebody going through that, and they knew somebody
- 2:01Speaker 3: going through that, and these songs were the final ingredient
- 2:05Speaker 3: that other shows don't get to have these these incredible
- 2:08Speaker 3: songs written by the best songwriters in Nashville that we
- 2:11Speaker 3: got to sing. And so there's some sort of attachment
- 2:14Speaker 3: between Nashville and the Nashville fan base, the Nashi's as
- 2:17Speaker 3: we call them, that just doesn't seem to fade.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And we're grateful for that.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 4: And there's something about like the last tour that we
- 2:22Speaker 4: just did a tour in the UK and it was
- 2:24Speaker 4: incredible as the Nashville cast again and like so much
- 2:28Speaker 4: of the audience were new fans, so we met so
- 2:31Speaker 4: many new friends, and the people who've been there since
- 2:33Speaker 4: the beginning have said, like, please keep touring and that
- 2:36Speaker 4: feels so special, like that's an honor for us. Oh
- 2:39Speaker 4: so why not?
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's funny to be a fan of something
- 2:43Speaker 1: and then meet somebody in real life, right, And one
- 2:46Speaker 1: of the first things that popped out was and forgive me,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I was a fan of the show, but up until
- 2:52Speaker 1: yesterday I didn't realize you were Australian job. But it's
- 2:58Speaker 1: funny because I'm sure you'll do something and meet a
- 3:00Speaker 1: fan in public or something and you're like, in You're
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm not going to be insulting and do your accent.
- 3:05Speaker 2: He'd be like, hey, top of the morning or whatever.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 3:11Speaker 3: When you meet you said you weren't going to be insulting,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and then suddenly you were.
- 3:17Speaker 2: You know what you mean. People were shocked when they
- 3:19Speaker 2: when they when they hear her right, like what's what's
- 3:21Speaker 2: the reality is it? Like? What's wrong with your voice?
- 3:25Speaker 4: You sound funny?
- 3:26Speaker 3: I'm sorry, which, by the way, is a testament to
- 3:29Speaker 3: how well she did the American accent.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I can promise you I could never have.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Gone to Australia and played an Australian guy named Deacon
- 3:38Speaker 3: as well as she did. By the way, I did
- 3:39Speaker 3: figure it out years ago. I had a small role
- 3:41Speaker 3: on a TV show. This is before the internet, this
- 3:43Speaker 3: is before cell phones or anything, and I had about
- 3:45Speaker 3: a paragraph of Australian to speak. I was played this
- 3:49Speaker 3: Australian guy, barely had a scene at all.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You never heard this.
- 3:52Speaker 3: So I learned how to say this paragraph. And I
- 3:54Speaker 3: got there on the day and they said they love
- 3:55Speaker 3: what you're doing.
- 3:56Speaker 2: They wrote you two more scenes and.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I didn't have an idea how to say any of
- 4:00Speaker 3: these words in Australian.
- 4:01Speaker 2: So you know what, I did.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I got on the phone and I called the highest
- 4:05Speaker 3: regency in Sydney, Australia, and I got the concierge and
- 4:09Speaker 3: I said, I'm an actor in a.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I'm on the lot right now.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I'm at Warner Brothers, and I'm screwed because I don't
- 4:14Speaker 3: know how to say these things.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Can you please say these words for me? And I'll
- 4:18Speaker 2: be damned.
- 4:18Speaker 3: He stood there and I recorded him off the phone
- 4:20Speaker 3: saying the words I needed the word.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So that's just what true story that.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yeah, well, so we'll get her American accent eventually. What's
- 4:28Speaker 1: your Australian accent?
- 4:32Speaker 2: Hold on? I gotta call Sydney bloody? How that out there?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Which you cast him.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Hanging out with him?
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the good part. Uh So.
- 4:49Speaker 1: The funny thing about TV shows now, especially in the
- 4:51Speaker 1: streaming universes, things that you didn't think could live forever
- 4:55Speaker 1: now do and get these like cult followings.
- 4:58Speaker 2: And it's funny enough.
- 4:59Speaker 1: We just talking to a member of our staff here
- 5:03Speaker 1: and she goes, before I moved to Nashville, I've binge
- 5:06Speaker 1: watched that show, so like I kind of knew what
- 5:07Speaker 1: to expect.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Exact words. Fact, that's true. Exact words did they give
- 5:12Speaker 2: you a quiz at the border?
- 5:13Speaker 3: They asked you various questions just to make sure you're
- 5:15Speaker 3: allowed to come on in.
- 5:18Speaker 4: They do ask a lot.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, when you but when you hear something like that,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and you know the cult following that this show has,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and it was popular in its run and it's almost
- 5:28Speaker 1: more popular now, do you feel.
- 5:30Speaker 4: That, Yeah, it's been. This is why we feel so honored,
- 5:32Speaker 4: like to have the fans be like, we want more
- 5:35Speaker 4: and we've told our referends and we couldn't go out
- 5:37Speaker 4: for such a lie because of the pandemic that people
- 5:40Speaker 4: couldn't leave their homes. They were like, I've finished Netflix,
- 5:42Speaker 4: what do I do?
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, it definitely gets wider because everything keeps streaming, but
- 5:47Speaker 3: it also seems to get deeper as well, because it
- 5:49Speaker 3: was sort of a golden moment.
- 5:50Speaker 2: One of the things I love about it.
- 5:52Speaker 3: It's an absolute document of this town at that moment.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I mean, if you look at twenty twelve to now,
- 5:59Speaker 3: how much has this city changed, how much has Broadway changed,
- 6:02Speaker 3: how much is every part?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Well, if you watch that show, you're going to see.
- 6:06Speaker 3: How it was golden in that moment right then, And
- 6:09Speaker 3: it really meant a lot to us to be a
- 6:11Speaker 3: part of that and that people are still listening. And
- 6:13Speaker 3: by the way, other shows to get together, they have
- 6:15Speaker 3: to do an actual reunion, they have to shoot a
- 6:17Speaker 3: whole season. Might be good, might not. You're borrowing on
- 6:20Speaker 3: something that you're not sure you're gonna make better, you're
- 6:22Speaker 3: certainly getting something out of it. But with us, we
- 6:25Speaker 3: have this music, so it's a lot sort of simpler.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Let's just get up on a stage with this incredible band.
- 6:30Speaker 3: By the way, the band that is up there is
- 6:32Speaker 3: led by the guy named Colin Linden, and Colin was
- 6:35Speaker 3: the voice of Deacon's guitar. When you heard Deacon playing,
- 6:38Speaker 3: when you heard him singing, that was me singing. But
- 6:40Speaker 3: when you heard him playing, that was Colin. So there's
- 6:43Speaker 3: a real family aspect to all of it. We're all
- 6:45Speaker 3: back together and we get to do this again.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Out of everything you've done, and if you just have
- 6:49Speaker 1: a different answer, that's that's fantastic. But out of everything
- 6:52Speaker 1: you've done, you look up and down your career, regardless
- 6:56Speaker 1: of what level it was, are you the level of
- 6:58Speaker 1: your involvement. Are you surprised that this is what has
- 7:03Speaker 1: has lasted like maybe it did something else. You're like, Oh,
- 7:06Speaker 1: this is gonna be something that lasts forever.
- 7:07Speaker 3: No, let me say, I'm gonna jump in and say no,
- 7:10Speaker 3: I'm not surprised, and I'll tell you why, because I've
- 7:12Speaker 3: been a part of a whole lot of things. I
- 7:14Speaker 3: had a small role on the Office That's gonna last,
- 7:16Speaker 3: that's unbelievable. But I was a guest star on that
- 7:19Speaker 3: recurring guest star.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I promise you.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I saw the script and I knew there was something
- 7:24Speaker 3: special about this script written by Calli Curry. I heard
- 7:27Speaker 3: t Bone Burnett was doing the first season of Music
- 7:29Speaker 3: and I knew.
- 7:30Speaker 2: How incredible that was.
- 7:31Speaker 3: It wasn't until I saw the pilot episode I knew
- 7:34Speaker 3: how good some of the scenes I was able to
- 7:37Speaker 3: be a part of, was how great Connie Britton was
- 7:39Speaker 3: in those scenes with me.
- 7:40Speaker 2: It wasn't until I saw the pilot.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Just like everybody else that I saw, like Sam and
- 7:46Speaker 3: Claire singing, was.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Your first song? Was it fade into You?
- 7:50Speaker 3: If I didn't know better, the second one was fade
- 7:53Speaker 3: into You. They had these two singles, one on top
- 7:56Speaker 3: of the other, like an episode or two a part,
- 7:58Speaker 3: and that's the stuff I hadn't seen while we were shooting.
- 8:01Speaker 3: When I started to see these other characters just so alive,
- 8:05Speaker 3: so gifted, so talented, that I was surrounded by this thing.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I promise you, I don't know much about this business,
- 8:11Speaker 3: but I said this could be special, this could last,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and it was right.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And we're going to talk about the show coming up
- 8:18Speaker 1: here at the Ryman shortly. But I want to talk
- 8:20Speaker 1: about acting and singing because there's not making it sound easy,
- 8:24Speaker 1: but there's plenty of people that can act right, can
- 8:26Speaker 1: get in front of the camera, can deliver.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Their lines, bring the lines of the life.
- 8:31Speaker 1: But how much harder is it when you have to
- 8:33Speaker 1: sing and act? Is there an extra level of stress?
- 8:37Speaker 2: Is pressure? Or is it just have to sing? Then
- 8:40Speaker 2: get to sing?
- 8:41Speaker 3: It wasn't something we were fortunate to We were all like,
- 8:43Speaker 3: we get to sing too, Yeah, every day.
- 8:45Speaker 4: It's crazy. We've both done musical theater before. This is
- 8:48Speaker 4: the last thing you did, was Buddy, and I did
- 8:50Speaker 4: bring Awakening back, and that's part of what got me here.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I was late to my audition because it rained in California,
- 8:57Speaker 4: and everyone forgets how to drive when it rains in California.
- 8:59Speaker 4: But they me in the costing room because they knew
- 9:02Speaker 4: that I'd played Wendlines Bring Awakening. So to get to
- 9:05Speaker 4: do like to get to tell stories, because it all
- 9:08Speaker 4: is just storytelling. It's just a different medium. Acting and
- 9:11Speaker 4: singing is such a dream come true. So when this
- 9:14Speaker 4: role came up, I was like, sorry, what.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Yes, please, I'll tell you something else too. I don't
- 9:18Speaker 2: think there is.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I don't see the difference really between them, so I
- 9:23Speaker 3: see so many of the commonalities. In fact, whenever I
- 9:25Speaker 3: see a musician or a singer songwriter that either can't
- 9:29Speaker 3: act or think they can't act, I'm like, I don't
- 9:31Speaker 3: understand that, because when you stand on that stage so
- 9:34Speaker 3: often you're singing a song. I don't know if you
- 9:36Speaker 3: know this, but Johnny Cash was really not named Sue.
- 9:39Speaker 3: He was playing a character who was a boy named Sue,
- 9:43Speaker 3: and so as such, he was acting throughout that song,
- 9:46Speaker 3: and that has how every singer songwriter does. So to me,
- 9:49Speaker 3: there's so many commonalities. The biggest one is how.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Truthful are you being and you're acting? How real?
- 9:54Speaker 3: What are you bringing that's authentically human? And it's the
- 9:58Speaker 3: same thing in songwriting and song singing. Are you being
- 10:01Speaker 3: authent all those people we love the most when they
- 10:03Speaker 3: sing a song, you're like, that's it, that's the real thing.
- 10:06Speaker 3: And finally, when you do a show and you're doing
- 10:08Speaker 3: a scene, in every scene, you go about as far
- 10:11Speaker 3: as you can. What we found is when you now
- 10:13Speaker 3: get to sing a song on top of that, you
- 10:15Speaker 3: get to go deeper. There are things that Deacon never
- 10:18Speaker 3: would have said to you, but you put them behind
- 10:20Speaker 3: a guitar and he'll tell you anything. You know, that
- 10:23Speaker 3: whole three chords in the truth. So I've always thought
- 10:25Speaker 3: they go together perfectly, and Nashville was the perfect showcase
- 10:28Speaker 3: for that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Those characters get to come back to life.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Anytime a fan approaches you, or anytime you get to
- 10:35Speaker 1: do a show like you're about to do at the
- 10:36Speaker 1: Rhyman and then also go on tour as well.
- 10:40Speaker 2: How hard was it to say goodbye.
- 10:43Speaker 1: To that character as things raps, because obviously you get
- 10:47Speaker 1: attached to that role you're playing right, and you get
- 10:49Speaker 1: to put and it becomes really a part of you.
- 10:52Speaker 2: So how hard was it?
- 10:54Speaker 1: You guys are doing the last the last scene the
- 10:56Speaker 1: last show, it's wrapped.
- 10:59Speaker 2: R Yeah, scene of the entire series. Yeah, we did
- 11:03Speaker 2: the last scene together of the whole show. Yea, yeah, yeah.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Deacon was always with Scarlet and she was helping him
- 11:12Speaker 3: and he was hopefully helping her.
- 11:14Speaker 2: But when you left, when we left, I tell you this,
- 11:16Speaker 2: it was.
- 11:18Speaker 3: What people might not understand is even more important than
- 11:21Speaker 3: I want this to go on forever. You don't ever
- 11:23Speaker 3: feel that because you know it won't. What you think
- 11:26Speaker 3: is I want this to end. Well, I want to
- 11:28Speaker 3: land this airplane. I mean the most important.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Part of any airplane journey's landing.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And so you wanted to feel like we left these
- 11:38Speaker 3: characters in a good, special, wonderful, real place. And because
- 11:42Speaker 3: we both did that. There there's a moment in the
- 11:46Speaker 3: final scene where Deacon is having a dream and in
- 11:49Speaker 3: it Raina is giving him He finally pictures Raina. It's
- 11:52Speaker 3: so real and it's so clear, and she gives him
- 11:54Speaker 3: some advice that soothes his soul and calms him as
- 11:57Speaker 3: she always did. And in that moment, he's about to
- 12:00Speaker 3: go on stage at the Ryman where we're blocked from
- 12:02Speaker 3: the Ryman, and in walks Scarlett and she sees him
- 12:05Speaker 3: in some places.
- 12:06Speaker 2: She says, are you okay? And Deacon looks at her
- 12:08Speaker 2: and he says, yeah, I'm okay.
- 12:11Speaker 3: And it was the smallest line. The line meant, are
- 12:13Speaker 3: you all right to go on stage? But what it
- 12:15Speaker 3: really meant was these two people had been together forever
- 12:18Speaker 3: and Deacon had never been okay. The final line is
- 12:22Speaker 3: are you okay? And he says, yeah, I'm okay, And
- 12:25Speaker 3: I thought that was perfection. So that gives me the
- 12:28Speaker 3: cold chill still, and that lets me it's hard to
- 12:31Speaker 3: step away, but we have I still have his guitar
- 12:34Speaker 3: right there. I have his boots at home. I have
- 12:36Speaker 3: a bunch of his shirts so I can put on
- 12:38Speaker 3: Deacon anytime I want. Until then, we get to stand
- 12:42Speaker 3: up on stage at the Rymann Auditorium in Atlanta as
- 12:46Speaker 3: well on the twenty second and twenty third of November
- 12:48Speaker 3: and get to for a little bit be these characters again.
- 12:53Speaker 1: So we get to see the show here in Nashville.
- 12:55Speaker 1: We're lucky, like you said the night before, you're in Atlanta.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Let's say everything is about a reunion in right now,
- 13:00Speaker 1: right like a full like reunion or extra episodes or whatever.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Do you see that ever?
- 13:06Speaker 1: And I'm not asking behind the curtain question right but
- 13:09Speaker 1: if you get approached to ever bring this show back
- 13:13Speaker 1: short run five episodes, see where everybody is now something
- 13:16Speaker 1: like that, or even test the waters.
- 13:18Speaker 2: And just run with it again.
- 13:19Speaker 3: My think on that, and I'd love to hear Claire's,
- 13:21Speaker 3: is that what we have now is a bank account
- 13:24Speaker 3: that we built up with our fan base, with the
- 13:27Speaker 3: people that love that show.
- 13:28Speaker 2: There's this massive bank account. If I ever saw.
- 13:31Speaker 3: A script or any concept or idea that I thought
- 13:34Speaker 3: truly would add to that bank account of goodwill, I
- 13:38Speaker 3: would be down. I think virtually all of them would
- 13:42Speaker 3: honestly be just making withdrawals, would just be taking from
- 13:45Speaker 3: what was to give us a little more fun right
- 13:48Speaker 3: now and a little more time in the spotlight.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I would never want to do that.
- 13:51Speaker 4: It would have to serve all of the work that
- 13:54Speaker 4: we did is six years of our lives, maybe more,
- 13:56Speaker 4: I don't know. And so as long as it didn't
- 13:59Speaker 4: take away from that, both for us, but mostly for
- 14:01Speaker 4: the fans, because they're the ones who it's about. They're
- 14:03Speaker 4: the ones who keep coming back and filling the seats
- 14:05Speaker 4: and asking us to come to wherever they like, whatever
- 14:08Speaker 4: the nearest city to them is to sing the songs.
- 14:11Speaker 4: As long as it didn't take away from any of
- 14:14Speaker 4: that for them, then I think it would be wonderful,
- 14:17Speaker 4: it'd be so fun.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I'll give you one more hint too. That's interesting.
- 14:20Speaker 3: You can find where these if you want to kind
- 14:22Speaker 3: of know where Deacon's gone, it's not the exact answer.
- 14:25Speaker 3: If you want to find where Scarlet's gone, it's not
- 14:26Speaker 3: the exact answer.
- 14:27Speaker 2: But we all have our own music, all of us.
- 14:30Speaker 3: If you follow Sam Palladio has an album coming out,
- 14:33Speaker 3: Claire's with Bow and Young with her incredible husband Brandon, who,
- 14:36Speaker 3: by the way, she introduced to the Nashville audience in
- 14:39Speaker 3: that final episode. There was Brandon and Clara and Scarlet
- 14:43Speaker 3: on Brandon's arm and they were talking about getting married
- 14:46Speaker 3: and lo and.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Behold they did.
- 14:48Speaker 3: So you can listen to Bow and Young and some
- 14:50Speaker 3: of those songs, you'll go, that's Scarlet. And if you
- 14:53Speaker 3: listen to my I have an album out called Love
- 14:55Speaker 3: Ain't Pretty. I promise you listen to a couple of
- 14:57Speaker 3: these shows. The songs you tell me, you'll go that
- 14:59Speaker 3: one's Deacon, and you're not wrong. There's a piece of
- 15:02Speaker 3: those people and all of us that continues in our art.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Is that intentional to that you know of that character voice,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and that.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Means no we're never you never went. I think I'll
- 15:11Speaker 2: go write a scarlet or sing a scarlet song. I'm
- 15:13Speaker 2: just saying, we walked in these boots or she walked
- 15:15Speaker 2: in these heels with the now you walked in boots.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Yeah, And honestly, she's barefoot ninety percent of the time,
- 15:22Speaker 3: so she walked in those bare feet of scarlets a
- 15:25Speaker 3: long time.
- 15:25Speaker 2: So that part of us is it sticks its head
- 15:29Speaker 2: out again.
- 15:30Speaker 4: I think for me, scarlet was always a part of me.
- 15:32Speaker 4: I learned to do her accent from a hospital bed
- 15:34Speaker 4: as a child because I couldn't go anywhere. I had
- 15:36Speaker 4: cancer when I was kidding a fine out, but I
- 15:39Speaker 4: watched Fried Green Tomatoes and The Wizard of Oz until
- 15:43Speaker 4: I wore like I think it went through three VHS
- 15:45Speaker 4: tapes of the Wizard of Oz, and that's how I
- 15:47Speaker 4: learned the accent when I was about five, I think
- 15:49Speaker 4: when I learned it. And so when the casting came along,
- 15:52Speaker 4: I walked into the room as Southern person, having never
- 15:56Speaker 4: met a Southern person. So I really hope it didn't
- 15:58Speaker 4: upset too many people.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Who seemed happy.
- 16:00Speaker 4: So she was always in there, and I think Deacon
- 16:02Speaker 4: was always in there.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, And it was just.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Waiting for the right project, the right inspiration for them
- 16:07Speaker 4: to come out. So when we do go out on stage,
- 16:10Speaker 4: we bring them. We bring them with us wherever we go.
- 16:12Speaker 4: We don't pretend to be them. They were always there,
- 16:15Speaker 4: and I sound completely and I think.
- 16:17Speaker 3: When we're all together, they're conjured even more. They start
- 16:20Speaker 3: coming out even more. Sam gets a little more gunner
- 16:23Speaker 3: around us, and Jonathan gets a little more avery. So
- 16:27Speaker 3: I'm really just so proud of everybody and all the
- 16:30Speaker 3: music they've made since then too. I knew how good
- 16:32Speaker 3: they were, but then you see their independent projects and
- 16:34Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, God, they're so good.
- 16:36Speaker 2: They're so good.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Last thing I want to ask about the show, and
- 16:39Speaker 1: then we're going to talk about what people can expect
- 16:42Speaker 1: as y'all hit.
- 16:42Speaker 2: The stage here.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Sure, let's say they bring the show back, but let's
- 16:47Speaker 1: say they're interested in recasting, right, let's bring this back
- 16:51Speaker 1: to life. It's a prequel, right, or let's fast forward
- 16:53Speaker 1: to years down the line. Sure, and it's with respect
- 16:56Speaker 1: to the characters you brought to life, but like, let's
- 16:59Speaker 1: see what they are now with a different voice behind them.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Who would you know? You're gonna ask your goals. Oh
- 17:06Speaker 2: my gosh, that's tricky.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I don't see anybody else playing Deacon.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Come on, yeah, somebody younger that's really kind made.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Him who he was, Like you, you embody him when
- 17:19Speaker 4: you walk out on stage.
- 17:21Speaker 2: You're so kind.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I will say this though it's it's twenty twenty four.
- 17:25Speaker 3: We don't need to go find younger, more famous us.
- 17:27Speaker 3: We can use AI and I can be fourteen in
- 17:31Speaker 3: Deacon and we can make that happen. Just a few
- 17:33Speaker 3: more years, we will have that technology to go be.
- 17:37Speaker 3: It'll be a cartoon called Lil Nashville and they'll be
- 17:40Speaker 3: all little, big headed children of.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Hey, we might need to clip this out, because that's
- 17:45Speaker 1: a hell of an idea.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Saturday morning, my son gets up, we pull my cereal.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I'm going to watch the Little Next.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Whatever, always crying where's cartoony.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I will trauma that leads to alcoholism.
- 18:01Speaker 2: And I will say to piggyback off of what you
- 18:04Speaker 2: just said. I've heard other people say that before.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Obviously, we've met a few times of press games with you,
- 18:09Speaker 1: hanging with the with the bandering intermissions and our.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Buddy Jansen, Yeah and Janson.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I've heard more than one person say that you that
- 18:17Speaker 1: character is like career defining for you.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Do you feel that way, Oh?
- 18:21Speaker 3: Absolutely, there, there's definitely a ad. After Deacon was a
- 18:26Speaker 3: different time in my life than before Deacon, including the
- 18:29Speaker 3: show outer Banks. I know for a fact that they,
- 18:33Speaker 3: maybe not they, but their wife and their children saw
- 18:35Speaker 3: Outer Banks and said you need to I mean so
- 18:37Speaker 3: at Nashville and.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Said he'd be great for Ward.
- 18:39Speaker 3: And they knew it would be a good mislead because
- 18:40Speaker 3: Deacon was basically a good guy, so they brought me
- 18:43Speaker 3: into be this good guy in quotes that went sideways.
- 18:45Speaker 2: So it changed my life in all.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Those ways, but mostly it brought music back into all
- 18:51Speaker 3: of our lives. And here we are in music city
- 18:53Speaker 3: for a reason. This place just had all our hearts instantly.
- 18:57Speaker 3: There's a line in a John Denver song coming home
- 18:59Speaker 3: to a place he'd never been before.
- 19:01Speaker 2: That's exactly what.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I felt like immediately, and every place I go I
- 19:05Speaker 3: see that show. I was at the Opry the other
- 19:07Speaker 3: night walking down the hallway and I remembered my friend Claire,
- 19:10Speaker 3: who I'd barely known a day or two, just sitting
- 19:12Speaker 3: barefoot in one of the hallways waiting for her scene.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And so every place we go. I can walk right
- 19:18Speaker 2: down Broadway.
- 19:20Speaker 3: And see moments that had something to do with this show.
- 19:23Speaker 3: So yeah, it's the most beautiful thing to get to
- 19:25Speaker 3: be here and be a part of that. So maybe
- 19:28Speaker 3: that was definitely career defining, but more importantly was life defining.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Yeah, so you guys are hitting the stage, at what
- 19:34Speaker 1: point did you decide because this isn't your first reunion
- 19:37Speaker 1: show or back to two shows?
- 19:39Speaker 3: Right?
- 19:39Speaker 4: We did last year and it was fantastic.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, well I think we were shocked then about the
- 19:44Speaker 2: the response effect.
- 19:46Speaker 3: The response, Yeah, especially even also over in UK, like
- 19:50Speaker 3: we have no reason to space. It's spent a couple
- 19:52Speaker 3: of years by now. I don't know if you know
- 19:53Speaker 3: that we finished up. The last episodes were in eighteen.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Here we are in twenty four, so that's six years
- 19:58Speaker 3: ago with no real new shows, and my goodness.
- 20:01Speaker 2: It was crazy to happen. Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 3: We played Chicago last year and that was the first
- 20:05Speaker 3: one we did and it was like it was like nuts.
- 20:08Speaker 3: It was sort of like Beatlemania kind of fun thing.
- 20:10Speaker 3: So that's why we're doing it. The show here last
- 20:12Speaker 3: year sold out like in three four minutes at the Rhyman,
- 20:17Speaker 3: which is lovely.
- 20:18Speaker 4: I mean, like I love making people happy. It means
- 20:20Speaker 4: people are so happy, and we met we met so
- 20:22Speaker 4: many of them. Goodness that we did meet.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Absolutely and we've never been We've never really done it
- 20:27Speaker 3: in Atlanta. Will be at the Roxy on the in
- 20:29Speaker 3: the twenty second and then here on the twenty third,
- 20:32Speaker 3: so that we get to jump back in these waters again.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Is a thrill? Yeah?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Is it something that you plan on? This will be
- 20:39Speaker 1: something you guys do yearly and just pick different cities.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I think we're supposed to be.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Cool and go well whatever, But I think, looking at
- 20:45Speaker 3: each other, if we could do, if we could do,
- 20:47Speaker 3: if we could do.
- 20:47Speaker 2: This every so often for the rest of our life.
- 20:50Speaker 3: I'd love to play the ryemand once a year for
- 20:51Speaker 3: the rest of my natural life until they had to
- 20:53Speaker 3: wheel me off that stage.
- 20:56Speaker 2: You'll be the one wheeling me.
- 20:58Speaker 1: But that's a little aware, is he now exactly?
- 21:03Speaker 2: Well?
- 21:03Speaker 1: And it's and it's funny because that stage is so
- 21:07Speaker 1: there's a lot of stairs, so I'll help you.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Uh.
- 21:11Speaker 1: The Rhyman is such a special spot when you decided Nashville,
- 21:15Speaker 1: it had to be because of the history of the
- 21:17Speaker 1: show and the Ryman being what it had to.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Be right, and we're so so lucky to be invited back.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Everyone wants to play the Rhyman. But they were just like, yes, well,
- 21:26Speaker 4: you know.
- 21:27Speaker 3: You know the three, the trifecta, the trinity in this
- 21:30Speaker 3: town is the Opry, the Ryman, and.
- 21:34Speaker 2: The Bluebird Cafe.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Originally, Steve Buchannan, the brilliant mind behind thinking that there
- 21:39Speaker 3: even needed to be a show about Nashville, thought it
- 21:41Speaker 3: might be set at the Opry, backstage at the Opry,
- 21:44Speaker 3: because it's an amazing, magical place. But I think you
- 21:48Speaker 3: can't live backstage at the Opry. It's too special, it's
- 21:50Speaker 3: too singular. So but you can live in and around
- 21:54Speaker 3: the Bluebird Cafe, so it was sort of based around there.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Initially we started out in the real one, and then
- 21:59Speaker 3: they built us one that was so immaculately exact as
- 22:02Speaker 3: the other one that even Erica Wallams Nichols, who runs
- 22:06Speaker 3: the place over there, would say she was shocked by
- 22:08Speaker 3: how real it was.
- 22:09Speaker 2: That was a place we could live.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Scarlett could work there, Deacon could play there all the time,
- 22:13Speaker 3: Gunner could work there, and we always went back there
- 22:16Speaker 3: all the time. Then for special times we would go
- 22:19Speaker 3: to the Opry and Raina would be playing the Opry
- 22:21Speaker 3: or at a time in his life when Deacon needed
- 22:23Speaker 3: music more than ever, the Opry reached out and asked
- 22:26Speaker 3: Deacon to come play at the Opry. So those were
- 22:28Speaker 3: extremely special moments. But perhaps the most special ball is
- 22:33Speaker 3: the Mother Church being on stage at the Rhyman, and
- 22:36Speaker 3: in fact that we got to close out the entire
- 22:39Speaker 3: show of Nashville on stage at the Ryman with the
- 22:42Speaker 3: entire cast, past and present.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Singing the song of Nashville.
- 22:46Speaker 3: A life that's good means that we have a connection
- 22:49Speaker 3: now that place is historically connected to so many that
- 22:52Speaker 3: we get to have that sort of flag planted on
- 22:55Speaker 3: that stage. Is that's where we ended at all? Because
- 22:58Speaker 3: there's no place else we could think of that would
- 23:01Speaker 3: be so perfect?
- 23:02Speaker 1: What does a fan get out of this show other
- 23:05Speaker 1: than just great songs? Is there a lot of storytelling
- 23:09Speaker 1: about the characters the show?
- 23:10Speaker 2: Like do you are? Do you just hate? The show?
- 23:12Speaker 2: Is on lights up? Let's rock.
- 23:14Speaker 4: It's more like interacting with people with like a room
- 23:18Speaker 4: the size of the Rhyme, and it's big, but it's
- 23:20Speaker 4: small enough where you really are. You get to get
- 23:22Speaker 4: close together. Chip and I always go flying off the
- 23:25Speaker 4: front of the stage and we can't help it. We
- 23:27Speaker 4: just really like our fans. We have the best fans
- 23:30Speaker 4: in the world. Like I will always say that they're
- 23:32Speaker 4: just they're so they just keep coming back and they
- 23:35Speaker 4: say the loveliest things. And for me, being a storyteller
- 23:39Speaker 4: and an artist, I just want to make people feel good.
- 23:42Speaker 4: There's so much stuff going on in the world that's
- 23:44Speaker 4: really scary and yucky, and there are things that happen
- 23:47Speaker 4: in each play everyone's lives personally that are not necessarily fun.
- 23:52Speaker 4: So we get to give them this like it's suspended reality.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Maybe we're giving them words, but maybe we sing a
- 23:58Speaker 4: song that they were going through.
- 24:01Speaker 3: We've heard again and again that so many of these
- 24:03Speaker 3: songs are sole medicine for people. Whether it's a life
- 24:06Speaker 3: that's good or a song like Sanctuary or a friend
- 24:10Speaker 3: of mine, there's different songs that people latch onto. So yes,
- 24:13Speaker 3: you're gonna get to hear those songs. But the other
- 24:16Speaker 3: two things that are have become so important about it
- 24:18Speaker 3: is number two. Steve bu Can and our producer originally
- 24:22Speaker 3: of the show, also produces this, and he and we
- 24:24Speaker 3: all agreed that we have the kind of fans that
- 24:27Speaker 3: also want to hear some of our songs. So you're
- 24:29Speaker 3: gonna get to hear some bow and You and you're
- 24:31Speaker 3: gonna get to hear some Charles Aston, You're gonna get
- 24:33Speaker 3: to hear something we mix and match the two. They
- 24:35Speaker 3: jumped up with me on my songs. I have a
- 24:38Speaker 3: song called down the Road we finished with at last tour,
- 24:40Speaker 3: and to have all my cast mates up there singing
- 24:43Speaker 3: my song. So that's the second part. The third part,
- 24:46Speaker 3: the third part of the Secret Sauce is we make
- 24:49Speaker 3: sure it's not a train that has a schedule.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Yes it is, but when we're out there, we have.
- 24:54Speaker 3: These moments where we're just interacting with each other and
- 24:56Speaker 3: we're just talking.
- 24:57Speaker 2: With each other.
- 24:58Speaker 3: They want to just be and step inside the show
- 25:01Speaker 3: a little bit and sort of hang out, and so
- 25:03Speaker 3: do we. We want to let them into that place.
- 25:05Speaker 3: So all those things. It's sort of a hangout and
- 25:07Speaker 3: we get to play all this different music and no,
- 25:11Speaker 3: because no audience is the same, so they are they
- 25:14Speaker 3: are a major. That's the one part that we didn't
- 25:16Speaker 3: have in the show Nashville is our audience was out
- 25:20Speaker 3: on their.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Sofas all across the world.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Not interacting. This is different that now. Now, this is
- 25:25Speaker 3: the beauty of live is now you're.
- 25:28Speaker 2: A part of it. You're a little louder for this song.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Oh okay, they like that one, and it's just really special.
- 25:35Speaker 3: By the way, I've been on stage singing a Deacon
- 25:37Speaker 3: song that I haven't sung in a while, and I'll
- 25:39Speaker 3: forget a line and I'll hear the line, and I'll
- 25:41Speaker 3: hear the line come back to me through the audience
- 25:44Speaker 3: and I'll hear them sing it, and I'm like, okay, guys, yeah,
- 25:47Speaker 3: all right, this is their show as much as it's ours.
- 25:50Speaker 4: I love that there are songs. There's one in particular
- 25:52Speaker 4: called he Ain't Me that you wrote it with Deacon
- 25:57Speaker 4: in mind, and they said it was going to be
- 25:59Speaker 4: on the show, and for some reason it didn't end
- 26:01Speaker 4: up on the show. But the fans when he plays
- 26:03Speaker 4: it live, they go absolutely insane, and they treat that.
- 26:08Speaker 4: They treat our songs just like the Nashville songs. It
- 26:10Speaker 4: is clearly meant to be on the show. But I
- 26:12Speaker 4: love that you get to do it because it's.
- 26:15Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, they have a it's it's just it's
- 26:18Speaker 2: just sweet. And if you're and by the way. It's
- 26:20Speaker 2: last time we asked who here is an old Nashville fan.
- 26:23Speaker 3: You hear this enormous roar, and we go who's streamed
- 26:25Speaker 3: it recently during COVID or after?
- 26:28Speaker 2: And there's this other roar.
- 26:29Speaker 3: So what you said at the beginning of this thing
- 26:31Speaker 3: is there's more people coming to Nashville every day, not
- 26:35Speaker 3: just this town, but the show. And we hope that
- 26:37Speaker 3: if you're out there listening now, come be a part
- 26:40Speaker 3: of this community. You might have the train came back
- 26:43Speaker 3: around the station, so hop on this time.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I love that Freese at the time, and oh my pleasure.
