- 3:53Joshua Bancroft. An elderly woman, moaning in pain, drags herself across
- 3:59the old fashioned library to the telephone and dials with a trembling and uncertain handplayer.
- 4:08Hope rator gets me the police. Harry, Hello, this is Julia
- 4:16Bancroft, Bancroft Hall. We've been odds, I've been seting. Have you
- 4:34seen the afternoon paper, Patsy? Not yet? Why the nasty piece of
- 4:38business at Bancroft Hall Last night Victoria Bancroft was murdered, her sister Julia badly
- 4:43beaten. Oh me, how horrible. They're old Joshua Bancroft's granddaughters, aren't
- 4:47they great granddaughters? And and their brother lived together at Bancroft Hall. Why
- 4:51would anyone want robbery? The murderer store the original manuscript of Joshua Bancroft's first
- 4:58book of essays. Oh that's worth thousands of dollars, probably just about as
- 5:02valuable as any of the original manuscripts of Emerson nor Thoroh Darling. Nick Carter's
- 5:09office, Patsy Bone speaking. This is Arthur Haskell, is mister Carter there,
- 5:13please Jack a moment. It's to you, Nigga, mister Arthur Haskell
- 5:16Art Haskell. Hello, Hello, Nick Hard It is you. How are
- 5:20you? I must see you, NICKI today? Impossible, it's important.
- 5:25Why what's up? I'd rather not discuss it on the telephone. Will you

- 5:32How's eighty part? Good? Good? I'll be looking for you. Well,
- 5:38that's friends. Who's Arthur Haskell? Who's an old friend of my father's.
- 5:41I've known him since I was a kid owns the Haskell bookstore, deals
- 5:44in rare books and old manuscripts. Nay, isn't that a funny coincidence that
- 5:48he should call just when we're discussing the Bancroft robbery. I wonder whether it
- 5:55is a coincident. Hello, Art, was good of you to come.
- 6:13I'd let me introduce you my sectary. That's it. Go on, how
- 6:15do you do, miss Born. I'm glad to know you. Come in,
- 6:18Come in, both of them. Yeah, let's go back to my
- 6:23office. It's in the rear of a storm. I haven't forgotten that.
- 6:27Be careful, eh, shot the dark in here? Yes, I didn't
- 6:30want our meeting to attract too much attention. So that sounds mysterious, mister
- 6:34Haskell, what I have to tell you is even more mysterious. That's all.
- 6:42Here we are, sit down, Nick. Thanks, Now, what's
- 6:49happened? You read in the paper? I suppose about the theft of the
- 6:54bankrupt manuscript? Yes? What about it? Well? You find this hard
- 6:59to believe it, But yesterday just stare outside, Nick, shooting through the
- 7:09window. I can just sneak up, Nick, stay away from there.
- 7:15Look, sorry, see anyone web It was like going. Now find the
- 7:23light. Swiss Petrick was by the door. Yes, here it is,
- 7:28Nick got wonder whether he's heart Yes, Bessy, he's dead. Everything's so
- 7:47old and musty. Well, I'll bet no one's even opened the window and
- 7:51bands on horse and Jospha Grandcraft dies. Here's the library. Butther said,
- 7:57we find Julia in here. Well, you can tell us if there's a
- 8:00connection between Haskell and the Bankroft manuscript. Miss Bancroft, Yes, you're mister
- 8:11Carter in Missbury. Yes, forgive me for not getting my doctics. I
- 8:16can't move from miscount. Of course, we understand the Spankraft sit down,
- 8:22Thank you. I'm so glad. Of course I know if anyone can find
- 8:26the man who killed my sister, so a great grandfather's manuscript, you can,
- 8:31Miscart say, the man who killed your sister? You certain it was
- 8:37a man? Oh I see. Now tell me what time did the robbery
- 8:41take place, Miss Bancroft. It was about ten thirty. I was in
- 8:46my room on the second floor when I heard the Victoria's scream. I started
- 8:52down the stairs and then there was a shot, I see, and then
- 8:56I rushed into the room. Did I step through the arch. I was
- 9:01stuck on the head two or three times with what do you know, miss
- 9:05Bankroft. Yes, yes, the base of that desk lamp over there,
- 9:11That's all I remember until I came to Then I saw the safe opens the
- 9:16manuscript was darning. Victoria was, well, let's see you just a minute.
- 9:26What are you doing in those drap frees, mis dacatas? And you
- 9:33do kata. I don't know who you are, but the next time you
- 9:35hid behind drapery, but sure your feet don't show. Mister Carter, this
- 9:39is my brother, Taylor Bancroft. I. I was just coming in to
- 9:43get a book. Well you what book? What book? Why? Never
- 9:46mind? I had one more question to ask you, miss Bankrost. Yes
- 9:50you any idea who could have done this? Why anyone might have done it?
- 9:54So many people knew of great grandfather's manuscript, and nearly every one knew
- 10:00that it was kept here bru enough. But no ordinary fate would steal a
- 10:03rare old manuscript, stolen by a person who knew how to dispose of it.
- 10:07Well, there are several people here in the city. You know a
- 10:09great deal about old books. So happened to know the names of any particular
- 10:13individuals. Well, yeah, I know who would know, Julia Carvin Lighten,
- 10:18Professor van Lightens. Yes, he's the best known authority in the field.
- 10:22I'm sure he did ned to h thank you, miss Bancroft. I
- 10:26think I'll pay him a visit right now. So you think only someone who
- 10:37knows enough about the rare books to dispose of the Bancroft manuscript would have stolen
- 10:43it? There, mister Capper exactly. Professor van Lighten, who suggested that
- 10:46you could give me the names of a few such people to check on flyers,
- 10:48I think I can. If you've an excuse me, I'll go to
- 10:52my study. All I read out of this for you appreciate yourself. Gosh,
- 10:58look at all those books, Nike, Yes, Betsy, there it
- 11:01is is a famous Vanliden library, thousands of books worth hundreds of thousands of
- 11:05dollars. While that's a Gooden big Bible, and that last case there God
- 11:09and up here on this show these are art. That's funny. What is
- 11:16You wouldn't think Professor van Leyden would be so careless? Oh? A couple
- 11:18of volumes upside down? Uh? Yeah, I want to be mine if
- 11:22I turned them right side up. I don't imagine any what mm hm oh,
- 11:26what is it? There's something struck in by happy books. This looks
- 11:30like oh, let's say it. Petsy here, great Scott, do you
- 11:37know what this is? What me? This is what we're looking for the
- 11:41Joshua Bancroft Manuscript. In amazement and disbelief making Patsy's stare at the bulky sheet
- 11:52of yellowing pages, the precious manuscript has been found, but as make himself
- 11:56realizes, this serves only to deepen the mystery of Bancroft Hall. We'll see
- 12:01what happens in just a minute. Next time you get a household cleanser,
- 12:05remember this the first major cleanser improvement since the introduction of Old Dutch's famous cleaning
- 12:11ingredient seismatite is activated. Seismatite. Yes, Scientists, by an exclusive new
- 12:16process have activated seisma tite to give new post war Old Dutch cleanser a new
- 12:22past action, new almost effortless ease, a new snow white appearance. So
- 12:28get new postwar Old Dutch cleanser made with activated seisma type and see if it
- 12:33doesn't clean in less time with less actual rubbing than any other cleanser you've ever
- 12:37used, new postwar old Dutch cleanser, and the same familiar package carries the
- 12:41good housekeeping seal of approval. Now back to the case of the priceless pose
- 12:50to day's adventure with Nick Carter, brought to you by a new postwar old
- 12:54Dutch gleanser, and we pick up our story a few minutes of past since
- 12:58Nick and Patsy discus the Joshua Bancroft manuscript hidden behind some books in Professor Van
- 13:03Ryden's library. The professor is just returning from his study here, mister Carter,
- 13:09I have made a list of a few people you might want to talk
- 13:11to right now, Professor, you're the only person I want to talk to.
- 13:15Yes, Professor, we down the Bankraft manuscript. I see, And
- 13:18you believe that it was I who broke into Bancroft Hall, stole the manuscript,
- 13:22killed Victoria Bancroft, and beat your her sister, Well didn't you?
- 13:28Of course I didn't. I came by the manuscript quite innocently. I was
- 13:31about to buy it from whom from a friend of yours, Arthur Haskell.
- 13:35Arthur Haskell, I don't believe it. It's the truth. Miss Paul Haskell
- 13:39stopped by here only day before yesterday and to let me examine it. I
- 13:43was about to call draw in for the purchase when I heard that it had
- 13:46been stolen from Bancroft Hall the night before. Why didn't you know ify the
- 13:50police that you had it? But frankly, I was frightened, mister Carter,
- 13:54particularly I heard of Haskell's death. I realized that I had no proof
- 13:58of how the manuscript came into my possess, and Arthur didn't tell you how
- 14:01it had come into his possession. No, how much were you going to
- 14:03pay him for it? I was prepared to offer seventy three thousand dollars seventy
- 14:07three thousand, Who, professor, why exactly seventy three thousand? Well?
- 14:13I did considerable investigating in the matter about six weeks ago, and something in
- 14:16Clary's I made I feel that seventy three thousand is about what a team collector
- 14:20would pay for the manuscripts today. Why were you so interested in the bankrupt
- 14:24manuscript six weeks ago? I rustled? I appraised us as a favorite to
- 14:28mister Arnold Gibson. Who's Arnold Gibson a Stuckgoger here in the city, an
- 14:33old friend of the Bancoff family, or so he said. Did he say
- 14:35why he wanted it to praise? No, he did not, but he
- 14:39seemed to feel it was very urgent next something to have me. It's urgent
- 14:43that we see this Arnold Gibson. Right, Percy, Professor, with your
- 14:46permission, I'm taking this manuscript with me. It's evidence and one or perhaps
- 14:50two murder cases. I understand. Mister Corser, Thank you, Bets.
- 14:54You go back to the office. I'm going to pay another visit to Bankrft
- 14:56Hall. So what am I going to do at the office? Nick?
- 14:58You're going to put the man and the script in our office safe and leave
- 15:01it there. We're not carrying seventy three thousand dollars worth of pros around on
- 15:05our luggage compartment. Then you found it already, only tercard. That's wonderful.
- 15:18Where is the manuscript now, mister Carter? In the safe in my
- 15:20office, Mister Bancroft, I'm holding it for the police. Tell me,
- 15:26do you know Arnold Gibson. Arnold Gibson, Arnolds and no friend of a
- 15:30family. Mister Carter, what is he to do? With this, Could
- 15:31either of you authorize him to seek an appraisal of your great grandfather's manuscript six
- 15:35weeks ago? No, certainly not. Why you don't need to pay he
- 15:39Van Lyden, says Arnold Gibson asked him to determine the current market value of
- 15:43the manuscript. That's incredible. Why would he have done such a thing.
- 15:46I'm sure I don't know, Miss Bankcroft. That's one more thing I'd like
- 15:50to ask of you. The safe from which the manuscript was stolen behind that
- 15:54picture over the mattle, isn't it? Yes? He picture slide that show
- 15:58him very well, Judia. How many people knew the combination of the safe?
- 16:07Just too Victoria and myself. You don't know what, mister Bancroft.
- 16:11Now, Victoria never trusted me enough to give it to me. Being the
- 16:15elder sister, she looked upon great grandfather's manuscript as her personal property. Yes,
- 16:21she told you the combination of brincles. Yeah, but only because she
- 16:26felt someone else should know it, and didn't he event anything happened to her.
- 16:30I see, thank you. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm
- 16:33going to pick up miss Bourne and play a call on Arnold Gibson. Oh,
- 16:45slow down, Nick, isn't that the pop you owned up? Behead
- 16:48Ronald Gibson lives. Oh, yes, I think it is. I know
- 16:52you're turning around here. Might as well park over here right? Careful crossing
- 16:57the street? Fan, I'm watching? Come on? Hey wait, Patchy,
- 17:00Wait? What a car coming? Boy? Is he traveling crazy?
- 17:06He's driving on the wrong side of the street. Drunk He's head Get back
- 17:10back to behind that car. Jump. Oh great, that was close,
- 17:18Nick, was car deliberately try to run us down? That's obvious? Did
- 17:22you think what was? I was too busy getting out of the way.
- 17:25Me too, Nick, I bet someone was trying to keep us from talking
- 17:30to Donold Gibson. Maybe so makes me all the more interested in meeting the
- 17:33gentlemen. Oh shut down, miss Boone and mister Carter. Thank you,
- 17:47mister Gibson cigarette. Miss Carter, no thanks. There's a special brand I
- 17:51have made for my customers. They're called Arcadias. I'm sorry, I don't
- 17:56you I see. Well, what can I do for you? That's a
- 18:00Gibsen You can tell us why you at Professor Van Lyden to ascertain the market
- 18:03price of the Bancroft manuscript? Why and just what business is it of yours?
- 18:08Who murders? Make it my business? Even though the manuscript has been
- 18:11recovered, Oh, you've got it back, I have safely stowed away in
- 18:15my office safe. Oh are you going to tell me what I want to
- 18:18know? Corner? I had the Bankroft manuscript for praise because I was tired
- 18:25of waiting for the money Taylor Bangcroft ows me. Bancroft owes you money,
- 18:29fifty five thousand dollars, a lot of money. Taylor was playing them martt
- 18:33he lost, didn't have the money to cover. I advanced it for it,
- 18:37and you wanted to find out whether he could raise enough on the manuscript
- 18:40to pay you bank last rifeless Carr. I see, thank you, mister
- 18:45Gibson. Not so all? All right, that'sy. Shall we go?
- 18:48I'm taking you home. I'm going over to the Athletic Club, the Atlantic
- 18:52Club. What for think A good brisk rub down'll do me good and a
- 18:56good night's sleep and I'll be ready for another busy day tomorrow. All right,
- 19:14all right? Take it easy. Hello, Oh Patsy, what time
- 19:22is it? It's nine fifteen the office. Something terrible has happened, Nick,
- 19:25don't tell me. Let me guess. The Bancroft manuscint has been stolen.
- 19:27Yes, someone broke it here last night. They blew the safe,
- 19:30blew it. Huh, Sure they blew it, Nick, what'd you say?
- 19:36I said? Good? How I found out when I wanted to know?
- 19:37Hold everything, Patsy, I'll be right down. How can you be
- 19:48so calm? In the Bancroft manuscript has been stolen again. For one thing,
- 19:52it hasn't been stolen. What you look in the state in my private
- 19:55office, that new burglar group one there last year, you'll see that it's
- 19:59still there. To make I put it in the old space the way you
- 20:02told me to. Yes, I know. But after I left you last
- 20:04night, I came back here. I took the cover sheet of the manuscript
- 20:07and put it over a bundle of blank pages. I figured the thief had
- 20:11been too big a rush to notice that he was stealing a dummy. But
- 20:14I put the manuscript itself in the newsat then you expected the manuscript to be
- 20:18stolen. I hope it would be. That's why I took care to mention
- 20:22in front of every single suspect in the case. That's where it was hidden,
- 20:25puts me quiet on earth. Oh wait a minute, what are you
- 20:30looking at me? This astray by a chair here? Wasn't he when I
- 20:33left last night? It wasn't. And there's only been one person in the
- 20:37office since, the person who stole a dummy manuscript and this cigarette thought must
- 20:41have been left by that person. But says Arcadie on it, that's the
- 20:45brand Donald Gibson offered me last night. It must have been where I'll get
- 20:48it? Hey, Carter speaking. Oh hello, Maddie, what what's that?
- 20:59I see? Yeah? It does, isn't it? All? Okay,
- 21:04Maddie? Thanks for calling Nick, He says. The case of the
- 21:08bankrupt manuscript is solved. So police just found Donald Gibson did out on Riverside
- 21:17Road. Apparently his car skidded and went over an embankment. That solve a
- 21:22chase. They also found the dummy manuscript was in the car with him,
- 21:26so that not quite see what do you mean that's your hat? But where
- 21:30are we going? To the morgue? I want to take a look at
- 21:33Arnold Gibson's body. Hurry up, Nick, I don't like morgs all right,
- 21:47thought, so well, why are you so interested in Gibson's hands and
- 21:49skeets. Listen, remember when Gibson offered me a cigarette last night and I
- 21:52refused. Well, Gibson didn't take one either. In fact, he didn't
- 21:56smoke the whole time we were with him. You mean, I mean that
- 21:57he didn't smoke at all. It's not a yin of a nicotine stain on
- 22:00his teeth or fingers. He said he had those cigarettes made for his customers.
- 22:04He didn't say for himself, right, Percy, cigarette stub in the
- 22:07office was just a plant to throw a suspicion on Gibson. And Gibson must
- 22:11have been murdered, correct, And I know who murdered him to do,
- 22:15And I've also got a pretty good idea who murdered Victoria bankrupt. Confident that
- 22:25he has solved the mystery, and Nick turns away from the body of Arnold
- 22:27Gibson, we'll bring you the conclusion of today's adventure in just a minute.
- 22:32Ladies, the first chance you get take hold of package of new post war
- 22:36old Dutch cleanser made with activated seismatite. Try it and see if it doesn't
- 22:40clean in less time with less rubbing than any other cleanser you've ever used.
- 22:45Actually, you'll thrill to the new almost effortless ease in cleaning with new postwar
- 22:49old Dutch thanks to activated seismatite. It cleans polishes with a smooth gliding action
- 22:56that means less work less rubbing. Notice the new miracle eye speed with which
- 23:00activated seisma tite cuts grease and cleans away dirt and stains in both hard and
- 23:04soft water. Yes, and you post war old Dutches now snowy white,
- 23:10winces away quickly when cleaning is done. It's utterly different. Call quiet,
- 23:14compare it. Get you postwar old Utch cleanser made with activated sizematite for faster,
- 23:21easier cleaning. Now for the conclusion of the case of a priceless pose,
- 23:29Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by a new post war old
- 23:33Dutch cleanser. After leaving the morgue, Nick and Patsy's fat swiftly across the
- 23:38town and stands now at the door of the old mansion known as Bancroft Hall.
- 23:42Bring the doorbellagaan pass, I think I hear someone coming. Oh good,
- 23:49good eating, Miss Bancroft, your brother at home, Taylor why,
- 23:53Yes, he's in the library. Won't you thank you? Taylor? Yes,
- 24:00Julius, did you want to see me? I want to see you,
- 24:04bankruft, OHCQ about about murder, mister cusion? You want accusing Tim?
- 24:11I'm accusing him of the murder of Raza Haskell and Donald Gibson. Is
- 24:15it the look on your brother's face, I'd say he doesn't agree with you,
- 24:18Bankrupt. You made your big mistake when you blew my safe and left
- 24:21that cigarette stub in my office to frame Gibson. Did I catter? You
- 24:23did because Gibson had those cigarettes made for his customers, and of all the
- 24:27people involved in this case, you were the only one who was the customer
- 24:30of his. You're round, Carter. My mistake was in not running you
- 24:33and Miss Bowen down in front of Gibson's apartment. Yah, but I can
- 24:37undo that mistake right now, Oh Taylor, put away that pistol. Well,
- 24:41I didn't think you'd cracked so easily. Bankrupt, down on that couch,
- 24:45Carter, you too, Miss Bowen, very well. You realize,
- 24:51of course, you can't go on killing people indefinitely. I've killed three people,
- 24:55Miss Carter. A couple more will make little difference. Three, I
- 24:59didn't accuse you, of well I did. Nonetheless, you killed Victoria Toy,
- 25:06Yes, Julia, I killed it. He came into the library just
- 25:08as I was opening the safe to get the manuscripts. Then you came in
- 25:12and I struck you, and you had to kill Haskell to keep him from
- 25:15telling me from whom he brought the manuscript. And last night, after you
- 25:18stole the manuscript from my office, you met Gibson and gave him the manuscript
- 25:22in place of the money you owed him after he gave you a receipt for
- 25:25it. Just slugged him and wrecked his car to make it look as if
- 25:27he'd been killed in an accident. Right on all counts, Carter, Now,
- 25:30if you will excuse me, I'm afraid I can't excuse you yet.
- 25:33Bankrupt put down that self a fellows, get you in the name. Oh
- 25:45are you hurt? Just a minute, Miss Bancroft, want to ask your
- 25:48brother to do me a favor. What do you mean, Carter? Open
- 25:51that's safe above the mantle, just the way you say you did it the
- 25:52night of the robbery. Go on, open it. I can't cat why,
- 25:57I don't know the combination. That's what I thought. It was you
- 26:00who killed Haskell and Gibson. All right, but you didn't steal the manuscript
- 26:03from this safe. Then who did, mister Cardie? Who did? Why
- 26:08you miss Bancroft, And it was you who murdered your sister Victoria. Okay,
- 26:25Maddie, thanks for calling. Well, Patsy, that's that. Julia
- 26:29Bancroft just dictated the statement. She confessed that she killed Victoria. Yeah,
- 26:33pretty much the way I figured it. She stole the manuscript and then took
- 26:37it down and sold it to our Haskell. The next day, when Victoria
- 26:40accidentally discovered that was gone, she was curious. Of course, she accused
- 26:45Julia of taking it. That was a fight. In a fit of temper,
- 26:48Victoria struck Julia with the lamp face, and Julia in turned shot and
- 26:52killed Victoria and framed the whole story of the robbery. Right, But why
- 26:55did Julia take it? Me? It was Taylor, who was in debt
- 26:57to Gibson, drew enough, Patsy. By What Gibson didn't know was that
- 27:00Julia was the one who had prodded Taylor into playing the market. Oh see,
- 27:04In fact, I see everything except how you figured out it with Julia.
- 27:08Well, I got my first clue to that when the old safe here
- 27:11in our office was blown open. What did that provement? To prove that
- 27:14the killer wasn't a safe cracker or professional fee If he'd opened the safe in
- 27:18Bancroft Hall just by his sense of touch, he'd certainly done the same thing
- 27:22here. But he didn't use an explosive precisely. And that told me that
- 27:26the person who took the manuscript out of the Bancroft safe must have known the
- 27:29combination. I get it, And I got to thinking about our Castle's last
- 27:33words just before he died. Remember what they were, Patsy? Why?
- 27:34Yes, he said, yesterday, Nick, just yesterday. Well, it
- 27:38seemed logical that what he was going to say was yesterday, Nick, just
- 27:42yesterday I bought the Bancroft manuscript. Another words. The thing that was worrying
- 27:45him, that made him call you was that he actually had the manuscript before
- 27:49the papers announced it was stolen. Exactly when I realized that I knew that
- 27:53either Julia or Taylor had sold it to him, And Julia was the only
- 27:56one besides Victoria herself who knew the common Yes, but I didn't rely on
- 28:00my words. That's why I ordered Taylor to open the state. And when
- 28:04he couldn't do it, I knew he was covering for his sisters. So
- 28:07Julia had to be guilty. I see it all. Now. That's the
- 28:14end of Bancroft Hall, and of the Bancroft line too. How the line
- 28:18may be passing, but Americans will still be reading Old Joshua's essays long after
- 28:22the crimes of his great grandchildren. I've forgotten friends. This is Nick Carter

- 29:06There was also some blackmail, yes, and I might mention that room on
- 29:10the top floor with a sealed window, and that room in the cellar without
- 29:12a window. See that really sounds intriguing. What do you call this story?

- 31:03Pretty solid mystery. Though there had been hints about the siblings guilt. The
- 31:08one thing that I did wonder about. While the writers seem to think that
- 31:14it'd be so easy to blow up us safe, I didn't see any hints
- 31:19that the brother was like an explosive expert. And you have to admit,
- 31:23though Nick Carter will spare no offense to get his man or a woman as
- 31:30the case might be, well, that will actually do it for today.
