- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, I'm Deb from Sass and Smalltalk.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: We're here at Babes and Biz, and we're talking to all these wonderful women who were celebrating the women of business, the hustle, the heart, and everything in between.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Today, sitting at my table is the very wonderful Jennifer Dunett.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Yes!
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Can you tell us, Jennifer, who you are and what you do?
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: My name is Jennifer Dunett.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: I'm running for Langford City Council in the upcoming municipal election.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: I've lived in Langford my whole life, so 35 years.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: I have daughters, so I have a blended family.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: We have four daughters all together.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Very busy.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: I work full-time provincial government.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: So I've been in the provincial government for over 10 years.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: And in some of my roles, I've actually been part of advocating for Langford residents.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: I worked out of John Horgan's MLA office where I helped residents access government services and help them get the help that they need in the community.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I thought I would put myself out there.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: That is a wonderful step to take.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I don't think I can do that.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I can talk to you about it.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I think it's wonderful to take such a leadership role.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: To put yourself out there.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So you gotta tell me because we gotta get right down to business.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: What do you wish people knew about what you do?
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: I'm running for Langford Council because there's a lot of women and younger age demographic that get very nervous about politics, you know, they they get intimidated.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: And I don't want my children growing up exactly and and not knowing enough, right?
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So I want to get myself out there so that my children growing up feel comfortable putting themselves out there, not being afraid of the political world, because we need people that live the everyday struggles, that are living paycheck to paycheck, that are driving their kids to sports, or trying to just get by.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So that is your why.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm seeing the inspiration behind this.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I want to be a good role model.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: I want to be an advocate for the community that I'm living in that I care about so much.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Have a say.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: When did you decide to take that plunge?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: When did you say, hey, this is it?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: I'm ready to do this.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: To start running.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: I was iterating it at the end of last year.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: It it's one of those things that you're nervous about because you're really putting yourself out there for criticism.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: It's one of those things that you have to have a thicker skin.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: You're gonna get criticized for your ideas, suggestions.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: It's just what comes along with politics.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: If I know what I'm doing, I'm saying I'm authentic, I put myself out there for what I believe in, then it's okay to be criticized if that's what you sign up for.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: So if I know that what I'm saying, what I'm doing, I feel good when I go to sleep at night, then that's all that matters.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Not everybody's gonna agree, and that's okay, but every different opinions are what makes great decisions.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: So you know what?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I think that's in every thing we do, in every human experience, to be able to say you accept what you stand for, and it doesn't matter what others say.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, it will bother us sometimes when we're human, but then to be able to still get up and keep doing what you believe in, yeah, that's brilliant.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And it's a beautiful thing, a gift to give to your children.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I guess this is the same question.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: What's something that you learned the hard way as a woman of business?
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, the hard way.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: I know people are going to say, How do you have the time to do everything?
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: I have to get my children to sports, I I work full-time.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: I've got to make sure that I'm balancing everything and still taking care of myself.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Because if I'm not taking care of myself, how can I do all these other things?
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: And how do you figure it?
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: That's a great question.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Are you still trying to figure it out?
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I it just somehow happens and we just do it.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: You know, the only time I get to work out and go to oxygen yoga, which I love, uh, 5 a.m.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: for oxygen yoga.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we gotta do that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Um so it it's all about balance and making sure that you spend your time in the areas piece by piece.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: It just falls together.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: So then you can.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: I make time for it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: You make time for the things that matter to you, right?
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: My kids, my job, my this, this is I care about it, so I'm gonna make time for it.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Gosh, I wish I put more priority on oxygen.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: That's kind of a good mess.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: I've got to try that.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: It's great, yeah.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Now you got me thinking.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Gotta do that.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, so what does success look like to you?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Success to me looks like contributing to my community, having a say at the tables to make the community that I'm living in a better place for our children to grow up in.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: I wanna be a good role model for my children to look up to and be like, yeah, I can do that.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Put myself out there, you know.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Like you can do anything.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: You put yourself out there.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: But I think success to me is if I'm filling my cup.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Being out in the community like that is filling my cup.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: So to me, that's success.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: And for my children to look up to their moms.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So you're already there.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Come on now.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Come on now.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: You're very good at answering my questions before I ask them.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: What is one thing you're ridiculously proud of as a woman of business?
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I would say my resiliency.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I've gone through a lot and still just plugged through, didn't give up, you know.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Went back out.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I went and got a Royal Roads leadership certificate while I was working, taking care of the kids, had family losses, but didn't give up.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I think my resiliency is it's beautiful to hear that because a lot of us need to be resilient, especially as mothers, but mothers who want to learn, who wanna contribute, who wanna follow their passions.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: It takes resilience, especially with losses.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: And failures.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: It's all real stuff that we all go through and we somehow get through it, and you know, yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Which would make you a fantastic leader because you know, you know the things.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: All right, we're gonna take it down a notch to something a little bit more casual called spill the sass, where you have to answer the question as quickly as possible.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: All right, so coffee or tea.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, coffee.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love I love tea, but coffee is I can't not have my coffee.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Come on now.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: I got my coffee.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: She's sitting here.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I this is my third, third bottle.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Don't tell my functional health practitioner, oh my gosh, that's brilliant.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I wish I was saying tea, but it's not I know.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: I like to pretend I buy all these teas and then like I have a cupboard bull of tea, and then my partner's like well I'll drink that.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: I will soon, but it's always my go-to.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Is to I think I have like one tea bag per box that I use, and then the rest looks pretty.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, are you a morning person or a night owl?
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, morning.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: See, I like to go to bed at like 9:30.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm waking up for it for oxygen yoga at 5 or 4:40 a.m.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: See, this is why I need to go to oxygen yoga, get my button to gear.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I do not like the morning.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, I take that back.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: I love the morning.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I just am a night owl.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Ah, yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: So then it makes it hard to be up in the morning, yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: But I want to be a morning person.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's a good answer.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: What's something that you're going to be saying no to this year, Jennifer?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Negativity.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: I just don't have time for it.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: I don't like when people put people down.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: We should all be supporting each other.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: We're all, you know, trying to get by and raise our families and do good things.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: I just can't.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So I'll be saying no to all that.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: No, no, bye.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no more negativity.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I don't stand for it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: What's your current business era that you're in?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Are you in your protect my peace, era?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Are you in my I have no idea what I'm doing era?
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Are you in my figuring it out era?
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Where are you at?
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: I would say protect my peace.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty confident in what I'm doing in life right now.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: I'm getting out there more.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: I'm getting more comfortable in my skin.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: I'm getting a bit more confidence and putting myself out there and being like, this is who I am.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Good for you.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: You're unapologetic.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: You're just walking out the I mean, to be a representative as a leader in a community, that's a little bit like next level getting out there.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I'm just talking getting out the front door.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I've gone through those pieces too where you go super introverted and then we all go through.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna be extroverted every day.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: We all have our days, right?
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: So it is hard to get out there, but yeah, hence the oxygen yoga.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: That's wonderful.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Jennifer, for inspiring us, for giving us a little piece of yourself because you know we want to know who's gonna be running for council.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: This is wonderful.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Thank you for joining me at my table here.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Where can we connect with you, find you in socials, and support your business?
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So I have a website and I also have an Instagram, bet on Dinnette.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: So it's the slogan, it helps people remember how to pronounce my last name.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: A lot of people say done it, but it's Dinette.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Dinette.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so Facebook, my website, Instagram.
