- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good evening, I'm Mahalia Artis. Government is cutting the provincial
- 0:08Speaker 2: HST equivalent on gas and diesel through the winter months
- 0:11Speaker 2: in a temporary affordability measure announced this morning. But whether
- 0:15Speaker 2: the break will be extended remains to be seen. The
- 0:17Speaker 2: tax cut, equating to $ 0. 08 a litre, will take effect
- 0:20Speaker 2: on December 1 and run until March 31. Finance Minister
- 0:24Speaker 2: Craig Pardee is promising future legislation which would automatically drop
- 0:28Speaker 2: the tax once the price of oil hits a certain threshold,
- 0:31Speaker 2: though he stopped short of providing specific details. Party notes
- 0:34Speaker 2: if the price of oil remains high come April 1st,
- 0:37Speaker 2: government will extend the tax break. Otherwise, the tax will
- 0:40Speaker 2: return in the spring. He says many may ask, why
- 0:43Speaker 2: not remove it altogether?
- 0:44Speaker 3: If the price of oil is down $ 62, that's a
- 0:47Speaker 3: different story. It makes the bringing back of the taxation more.
- 0:52Speaker 3: And some would say, well, why put it back there
- 0:54Speaker 3: in the first place? Well, 42% of our expenditures in
- 0:59Speaker 3: government go towards health. 16% go towards education. It's what
- 1:04Speaker 3: taxes do for us. And at the same time, we
- 1:07Speaker 3: can hear Newfoundlanders and Labradorians say that, well, we're striving
- 1:11Speaker 3: to improve health care. Sometimes it takes funds to do it.
- 1:15Speaker 2: House Speaker Paul Lane started the fall session of the
- 1:18Speaker 2: House of Assembly by issuing visual reminder to members of
- 1:21Speaker 2: the importance of respect and decorum and the importance of
- 1:24Speaker 2: working in a harassment-free environment. The last sitting of the
- 1:27Speaker 2: House of Assembly was a particularly chaotic one, with concerns
- 1:30Speaker 2: raised on all sides of the legislature. Things took an
- 1:33Speaker 2: ugly turn last May with a tense shouting match between
- 1:36Speaker 2: Liberal Elvis Loveless and Minister Lloyd Parrott outside the chamber.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Speaker Paul Lane today highlighted pamphlets his office has had
- 1:43Speaker 2: printed for distribution among all elected members.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I had our staff create these and have them here
- 1:50Speaker 1: for all members to reflect on from time to time.
- 1:53Speaker 1: On the very front of it, as it says, this
- 1:57Speaker 1: honourable house is guided by the principle of respect.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Respect for ourselves. Respect for our colleagues, respect for staff,
- 2:06Speaker 4: respect for the institution, and respect for the people of
- 2:10Speaker 4: Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 2:12Speaker 2: The local Ukrainian community is celebrating the passage of Bill
- 2:15Speaker 2: S-210 in the House of Commons, which formally recognizes each
- 2:19Speaker 2: September as Ukrainian Heritage Month in Canada. It was in
- 2:22Speaker 2: September of 1891 when the first Ukrainian settlers arrived in Canada,
- 2:27Speaker 2: primarily in the Prairies provinces, where the descendants still live today.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Since then, the country has seen a huge influx of Ukrainians,
- 2:33Speaker 2: their numbers growing steadily since the Russian invasion in February
- 2:36Speaker 2: of 2022. Thousands from that country now call Newfoundland and
- 2:41Speaker 2: Labrador home. An emotional tribute was paid in the House
- 2:44Speaker 2: of Assembly today to a respected Torbay doctor who disappeared
- 2:47Speaker 2: two weeks ago. An extensive search in the Cape St.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Francis area failed to turn up any sign of Dr.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Thomas Hall, whose vehicle was found near the Marine Park
- 2:55Speaker 2: in Pooch Cove. Choking back tears, John Hogan remembered Hall
- 2:59Speaker 2: as a good friend and respected by his friends, family, peers,
- 3:02Speaker 2: and patients. That's your news. I'm Mahalia Artis.
