SPEAKER_00: Passport rankings grab headlines every January.
• 0:03
SPEAKER_00: Singapore sits at the top again.
• 0:05
SPEAKER_00: Europe dominates the upper tiers.
• 0:07
SPEAKER_00: The same names cycle through the same lists.
• 0:10
SPEAKER_00: But the Henley Passport Index measures just one thing: how many destinations you can enter without applying for a visa in advance.
• 0:19
  SPEAKER_00: That number matters.
• 0:20
SPEAKER_00: It is not, however, the whole story.
• 0:23
SPEAKER_00: A passport's real value depends on where you can settle permanently, whether you can hold it alongside another citizenship, what tax obligations it carries, and how it is perceived at borders around the world.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_00: As Gareth Brooks has previously argued, the number of visa-free countries alone is a weak and incomplete way to judge a travel document.
• 0:45
SPEAKER_00: With that in mind, here is the best passport in each of the world's seven major regions in 2026, evaluated not just by visa-free scores, but by what actually matters to globally mobile individuals.
• 0:59
  SPEAKER_00: Asia, Singapore.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_00: Singapore's passport tops the 2026 Henley Passport Index for the third consecutive year, granting visa-free access to 192 destinations.
• 1:13
SPEAKER_00: Japan and South Korea share second place at 188.
• 1:17
SPEAKER_00: No other region produces citizenships this dominant.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: But Singapore's value as a citizenship extends well beyond border control.
• 1:25
SPEAKER_00: The city-state operates a territorial tax system with no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, and a top personal income rate of 22%.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_00: It ranks among the world's safest countries, scores consistently at the top of global indices for rule of law and economic freedom, and sits at the geographic center of Asian commerce.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_00: Singapore prohibits dual citizenship entirely.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: Except another country's passport, and you lose your Singaporean one.
• 1:56
SPEAKER_00: For anyone pursuing a multi-citizenship strategy, that is a deal breaker.
• 2:01
SPEAKER_00: Singapore is the best citizenship in Asia, but it demands exclusivity.
• 2:06
SPEAKER_00: You cannot hold it as part of a portfolio.
• 2:09
SPEAKER_00: South Korea, tied for second at 188 destinations, permits dual citizenship under certain conditions.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_00: For those building a multi-passport strategy, it may be the more practical choice.
• 2:21
SPEAKER_00: But as a standalone citizenship, Singapore is unmatched in the region.
• 2:27
  SPEAKER_00: Europe, Ireland.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_00: Sweden leads Europe on visa-free travel, sitting in third place on the Henley Index, with access to 186 destinations.
• 2:38
SPEAKER_00: Ireland ranks one tier below at fourth with 185.
• 2:43
SPEAKER_00: On raw numbers alone, Sweden wins.
• 2:46
SPEAKER_00: But this article is not about raw numbers.
• 2:49
SPEAKER_00: What separates Ireland from every other European passport is everything beyond the visa-free count.
• 2:55
SPEAKER_00: Irish citizenship grants settlement rights across the entire European Union.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_00: It also provides full living and working rights in the United Kingdom through the Common Travel Area, CTA, an arrangement that survived Brexit.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: No other EU passport offers both.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_00: Ireland does not impose citizenship-based taxation.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_00: You can naturalize as an Irish citizen, live in a territorial tax jurisdiction, and owe nothing to Dublin.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_00: Compare that to the United States, whose passport comes with a global tax obligation that follows you everywhere.
• 3:32
SPEAKER_00: The passport attracts minimal suspicion at borders.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_00: Ireland does not start wars, does not project military force, and maintains more than 80 diplomatic missions worldwide to serve a population of just 5 million.
• 3:47
SPEAKER_00: An estimated 80 million people worldwide claim Irish descent.
• 3:51
SPEAKER_00: Of those, several million across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Argentina may qualify for Irish citizenship through an Irish-born parent or grandparent.
• 4:04
SPEAKER_00: Those who do not qualify by descent can naturalize after five years of residency.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: Latin America and the Caribbean.
• 4:12
  SPEAKER_00: Chile.
• 4:13
SPEAKER_00: Chile holds the strongest passport in Latin America, ranked 12th globally, with access to 174 destinations.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_00: Brazil and Argentina trail behind at 169 each.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_00: The gap between Chile and its neighbors looks narrow on paper.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_00: In practice, it is wide.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_00: Chile is the only Latin American country in the United States visa waiver program, meaning Chilean citizens enter the U.S.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_00: through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, ESTA, rather than queuing for a visa interview.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_00: Chile also belongs to three supranational blocks that extend its passports value beyond simple visa-free counts.
• 4:57
SPEAKER_00: Mercosur membership provides settlement rights across nearly all of South America.
• 5:02
SPEAKER_00: Pacific Alliance membership connects it to Mexico, Colombia, and Peru.

SPEAKER_00: And Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Eligibility grants Chilean citizens access to the APEC Business Travel Card, which streamlines entry into Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, and a dozen other economies.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_00: Dual citizenship is permitted, and naturalization takes five years of residency.
• 5:28
SPEAKER_00: The combination of Irish and Chilean citizenship has been called the world's most effective two-passport combo, covering Europe, the UK, North America, South America, and Asia Pacific with just two documents.
• 5:44
  SPEAKER_00: North America, Canada.
• 5:46
SPEAKER_00: Canada ranks eighth on the Henley Index with visa-free access to 181 destinations.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_00: The United States sits at 10th with 179, having briefly dropped out of the top ten for the first time in late 2025.

• 6:07
SPEAKER_00: It allows dual citizenship without restriction.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: It does not impose citizenship-based taxation, meaning you can stop filing Canadian returns once you establish non-residency.
• 6:18
SPEAKER_00: That stands in stark contrast to the United States, which taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live.
• 6:26
SPEAKER_00: Canada also maintains one of the world's strongest border reputations.
• 6:31
SPEAKER_00: A Canadian passport invites minimal scrutiny at immigration checkpoints worldwide.
• 6:36

• 6:48
  SPEAKER_00: The U.S.
• 6:49
SPEAKER_00: passport still opens many doors, but citizenship-based taxation, Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act reporting, and an increasingly restrictive entry posture toward foreign nationals have eroded its value relative to alternatives.
• 7:04

• 7:07
