Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, good morning, Welcome in to the Out of
- 0:02Speaker 1: Bound Show ESPN one five nine the Zone. We are
- 0:06Speaker 1: so excited to have Dean day board with us. He
- 0:10Speaker 1: is the dean of the Bagley College of Engineering on
- 0:12Speaker 1: the campus of Mississippi State University. We talked about this
- 0:16Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago. World class students, world class research,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and world class faculty here at the Bagley College of Engineering.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We want you to go to Bagley dots state dot
- 0:30Speaker 1: edu see all the amazing things that they're doing, and
- 0:34Speaker 1: then we want you to tour the campus of Mississippi
- 0:37Speaker 1: State University and come through the Bagley College of Engineering. Dave,
- 0:42Speaker 1: good morning, how you doing.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I'm doing great, bo Great to be back again.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Well, happy summer football on the horizon. You're about to
- 0:49Speaker 1: welcome in all your amazing students back to campus. Some
- 0:53Speaker 1: of them have been here this summer taking summer school.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I've followed y'all on social media. I love the post
- 1:01Speaker 1: on what.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Your students are doing.
- 1:03Speaker 1: As far as internships around the country, I mean you
- 1:06Speaker 1: dropped one that was out in California, another one I
- 1:09Speaker 1: think was in Alabama. I love seeing that and I
- 1:13Speaker 1: know how proud you are of your students, and I
- 1:15Speaker 1: think it was like sixty five percent of them will
- 1:19Speaker 1: do interns at some point over the course of their career.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And I know that's got to be exciting for you
- 1:26Speaker 1: and your team to see them go get that kind
- 1:28Speaker 1: of experience while they're still here at the Bagley College
- 1:32Speaker 1: of Engineering.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we have such great relationships with our employers, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and partners across the country that give these students this
- 1:39Speaker 2: opportunity and it is really, you know, a bigger and
- 1:42Speaker 2: bigger part of their education, right Sure. You know, there's
- 1:44Speaker 2: only so many hours in a day and so many
- 1:46Speaker 2: credits you know that we can offer here, and so
- 1:49Speaker 2: being able to offer programs like that where students are
- 1:52Speaker 2: learning on the job in the context of what they're
- 1:54Speaker 2: going to be doing is critical and we continue to
- 1:57Speaker 2: try to grow that. We have a new Associate Dean
- 1:59Speaker 2: for Research and Engagement, Adam Smith, who's joined us, and
- 2:03Speaker 2: engagement is an intentional part of that, right, So he's
- 2:05Speaker 2: going to grow research, but he's also going to grow
- 2:07Speaker 2: the corporate partnerships and part of that leads to the
- 2:10Speaker 2: internships and the co ops that our students do.
- 2:13Speaker 1: All right, speaking of learning on the job, Space Cowboys
- 2:18Speaker 1: with another championship.
- 2:21Speaker 3: All right, so doctor.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Dave Ford, what was your reaction when you heard that
- 2:27Speaker 1: the Space Cowboys won another championship.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yep, well, bo I read the first part first, which
- 2:33Speaker 2: is that they won their division again. They're Commercial off
- 2:35Speaker 2: the shelf thirty thousand foot division, and I thought, that's fantastic,
- 2:38Speaker 2: a repeat championship. And then I read the next part,
- 2:41Speaker 2: which is they won the whole thing. So this is
- 2:44Speaker 2: the International Rocket Engineering Competition or IRAQ in Midland, Texas,
- 2:49Speaker 2: and no matter what division you're competing in, you get ranked,
- 2:52Speaker 2: you know, compared to all other teams. And our team
- 2:55Speaker 2: won the championship overall for this year, and so I
- 2:59Speaker 2: just couldn't be prouder. I mean, it's great for them.
- 3:01Speaker 2: It comes on the twentieth anniversary of the founding of
- 3:04Speaker 2: the Space Cowboys, and so this is kind of a nice,
- 3:07Speaker 2: you know, kind of kind of bow to put on that,
- 3:09Speaker 2: you know, twentieth anniversary as well.
- 3:11Speaker 1: How big of a compliment is that to the Bagley
- 3:14Speaker 1: College of Engineering.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Yep.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I think it really goes to the quality of our
- 3:17Speaker 2: students and our faculty. I mean it just really our
- 3:20Speaker 2: students are the best they're they're book smart, but they're
- 3:23Speaker 2: also hands on smart and they're able to build things.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And their faculty advisors are just awesome. So you know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: kudos to Shreus and our support who is the faculty
- 3:32Speaker 2: advisor for that team, you know, of really bringing them along.
- 3:35Speaker 2: He's only in his first couple of years of advising
- 3:37Speaker 2: that team, and he's doing a wonderful job.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And look at all these companies, our institutes that are
- 3:44Speaker 1: tied in and collaborate or partner with your Space Space
- 3:49Speaker 1: Cowboys team in the Bagley College of Engineering. That's an
- 3:52Speaker 1: impressive lineup.
- 3:53Speaker 4: It is.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I mean, we're so grateful for our research centers that
- 3:57Speaker 2: are co located here in Starkville on our research camp,
- 4:00Speaker 2: so in particular a Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems or
- 4:03Speaker 2: calves provides a lot of equipment and a lot of support.
- 4:06Speaker 2: And then specifically for Space Cowboys, the Advanced Composites Institute,
- 4:10Speaker 2: which is you know here supporting research mission but also
- 4:14Speaker 2: supporting student missions like this. And then our great industrial partners.
- 4:18Speaker 2: The team just added Blue Origin last year as an
- 4:21Speaker 2: industrial sponsor. Aurora Flight Sciences, which is local and tied
- 4:25Speaker 2: to Boeing Northrop Grumman and Mississippi Space Grant Consortium and
- 4:30Speaker 2: all sorts of local partners as well.
- 4:32Speaker 3: That's a world class group right there.
- 4:34Speaker 4: It is.
- 4:34Speaker 2: It is they're really getting, you know, and again they're
- 4:36Speaker 2: working with those engineers. They're getting that experience and it's
- 4:40Speaker 2: paying off for sure.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Bagley dot ms state dot edu. We're visiting with Dean
- 4:46Speaker 1: Dave Ford and his crew twenty twenty six International Rocket
- 4:51Speaker 1: Engineering Competition. First overall, the space Cowboys do it again,
- 4:58Speaker 1: all right, show Doctor Ford. Talk about this got everybody
- 5:03Speaker 1: fired up in the spring when you all released this
- 5:07Speaker 1: and y'all posted this on social media. Talk about Matt
- 5:11Speaker 1: Ramsey Okay, graduate of Mississippi State University and mission manager
- 5:16Speaker 1: of Artemis two.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yep, So Matt is is a wonderful example of just
- 5:21Speaker 2: really you know, our students going world class after they graduate.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Right So, a mission manager for NASA for a program
- 5:28Speaker 2: like Artemis two is just an incredible accomplishment that we're
- 5:31Speaker 2: really proud of him for. So he's a two time
- 5:33Speaker 2: graduate of our Aerospace Engineering department bachelors and masters. And
- 5:38Speaker 2: he was also a baseball pitcher here for the ball Dogs.
- 5:41Speaker 2: So he's got you know, leadership experience and you know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: knows how to kind of motivate people and work with
- 5:48Speaker 2: people as well as being technically excellent. So he was
- 5:51Speaker 2: back on campus in spring and talking with our faculty,
- 5:55Speaker 2: talking with our students, telling what it's like to be,
- 5:57Speaker 2: you know, on the hot seat. You know, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 2: an incredibly important, you know, world recognized mission like Artemis two,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and he's continuing, you know, to the next phases of
- 6:08Speaker 2: that program as well. So we're going to have him
- 6:11Speaker 2: back often, you know, to be talking with our students
- 6:13Speaker 2: and our faculty and sharing his.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Wisdom, Doctor Ford, How important is that for successful alums
- 6:20Speaker 1: to come back and visit and engage with your students
- 6:25Speaker 1: and your faculty.
- 6:26Speaker 2: It's critical. It's all part of that learning process, right.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So we you know, we talked about internships and co
- 6:31Speaker 2: ops and they're going to learn on the job. But
- 6:33Speaker 2: you know, you only have time for a handful of those,
- 6:35Speaker 2: you know, during your school career as well. So being
- 6:38Speaker 2: able to interact with people who come back, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: and share what they're doing in smaller bits, right, rather
- 6:44Speaker 2: than committing for a whole semester or you know, the summer,
- 6:48Speaker 2: to be able to learn from their wisdom and their
- 6:50Speaker 2: experiences and kind of smaller bits coming back to the classroom.
- 6:53Speaker 4: So I'd put a.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Call out there. You know, we can all be artemis
- 6:56Speaker 2: to mission managers. And I'm not, you know so, but
- 7:01Speaker 2: you know, everybody has has really a story to tell
- 7:03Speaker 2: and I think something to contribute. And so I put
- 7:06Speaker 2: a call out there to folks who are interested in
- 7:07Speaker 2: coming back and sharing their wisdom, you know, with our
- 7:10Speaker 2: students too.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And if somebody's listening, we want them to go to Bagley,
- 7:13Speaker 1: dot m S State, dot ADU.
- 7:15Speaker 3: If we have an alum on the.
- 7:16Speaker 1: West coast, east coast, wherever they are and they have
- 7:20Speaker 1: had success and now they're they're like, oh, I'd like
- 7:24Speaker 1: to give back, yep, then the floor is theirs.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Exactly like yep. A lot of ways to give back.
- 7:31Speaker 2: People tend to think about money or you know, a
- 7:33Speaker 2: check or whatever. Of course that's great too, but but
- 7:36Speaker 2: you know, just sharing your time with our students coming back,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, and you don't even have to come back
- 7:40Speaker 2: these days, right, it's remote. You know, you can do zoom,
- 7:42Speaker 2: you can do all these sorts of things, and you
- 7:44Speaker 2: can do a session with one of our student chapters
- 7:47Speaker 2: or with one of our competition teams be highly valued.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Matt Ramsey undergrad and grad Bagley College of Engineering also
- 7:57Speaker 1: played baseball mission manager of Artemis two. Unbelievable, and he
- 8:03Speaker 1: was back on campus this past spring. We're visiting with
- 8:06Speaker 1: Dean Dave Ford, Mississippi State University, Dean Bagley College of Engineering.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Now is the time to go ahead and schedule a
- 8:16Speaker 1: tour of the Bagley College of Engineering. Go to Bagley
- 8:19Speaker 1: dot msstate dot edu. That's Bagley dot msstate dot edu.
- 8:25Speaker 1: We'll be dropping some dates MSU preview days set for
- 8:29Speaker 1: October twelfth, November ninth, and November twenty third. Again, this
- 8:35Speaker 1: is a world class College of Engineering. Bagley dot MS
- 8:39Speaker 1: state dot edu. All right, doctor Ford Astronaut Scholars, this
- 8:46Speaker 1: is super cool. Tell our listeners about this.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Yep.
- 8:49Speaker 2: This is a program that's right up there with some
- 8:52Speaker 2: of the others they might heard about like Goldwater Scholars
- 8:54Speaker 2: and Udall Scholars and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So this is a pristine organization. The Astronaut Scholars Foundation. Basically,
- 9:03Speaker 2: it's former US astronauts who've gotten together and raised funds
- 9:07Speaker 2: for scholarships for outstanding students. So you don't have to
- 9:10Speaker 2: be an aerospace engineering student or even working in that
- 9:13Speaker 2: field in order to be named this. So there's just
- 9:17Speaker 2: this So it's a it's kind of an interesting tie in, right,
- 9:19Speaker 2: we're kind of on the space theme. So we had
- 9:22Speaker 2: two students astronaut scholars last spring, Sloane Berry and Alex White.
- 9:27Speaker 2: You know, Sloan is in aerospace, but Alex is in
- 9:31Speaker 2: biomedical engineering and so you know kind of you know,
- 9:33Speaker 2: complementary fields there, but they've got they were two of
- 9:37Speaker 2: seventy nine astronaut scholars that were chosen nationwide that year,
- 9:41Speaker 2: so two out of eighty basically across the country.
- 9:44Speaker 1: This is prestigious. I mean it is seventy nine. We
- 9:49Speaker 1: get to that. That's a prestigious accomplishment.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely, yeah, And actually we have but we that's
- 9:55Speaker 2: another thing that's great about Bagley is we've got a
- 9:57Speaker 2: great partnership with the Honors College here.
- 10:00Speaker 4: In fact, I would say a large fraction of.
- 10:02Speaker 2: The Honors College it's comprised of engineering students, and we
- 10:06Speaker 2: have now an Office of Prestigious External Scholarships that basically
- 10:10Speaker 2: works with our students and our faculty to position them
- 10:13Speaker 2: to have the best possible applications for these things. So
- 10:16Speaker 2: not only are we you know, you know, not only
- 10:18Speaker 2: are our students great and our faculty providing great opportunities,
- 10:22Speaker 2: but you know, we are plugged into how to help
- 10:25Speaker 2: our students succeed in this environment too.
- 10:27Speaker 3: All right, that's exciting.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Bagley dot m S State, dot ed U, Bagley dot
- 10:33Speaker 1: m S State dot Edu.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Oh, this is cool.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I love anything with CAVS Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems.
- 10:40Speaker 1: This is fascinating to me. All right, EcoCar. Again, your students,
- 10:46Speaker 1: your faculty have had a tremendous amount of success in competitions,
- 10:50Speaker 1: which means a lot to you and it should. All right,
- 10:53Speaker 1: walk me through what just happened and what's about to
- 10:56Speaker 1: happen in the future with the new vehicle.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Yeah, this is an exciting time, bo. So the the
- 11:03Speaker 2: four year competition, these competitions come in four year blocks. Basically,
- 11:08Speaker 2: it's kind of a year at a time in four
- 11:09Speaker 2: year batches with different vehicles that are provided by GM.
- 11:13Speaker 2: So the students work on actual real road vehicles doing
- 11:17Speaker 2: you know, working with the engineers at GM, working with
- 11:20Speaker 2: our staff and our faculty at CALVES to basically do
- 11:23Speaker 2: all sorts of modifications to them according to the rules
- 11:26Speaker 2: of the competition. So the students just finished up on
- 11:29Speaker 2: the Cadillac Lyric EV. That competition closed back in May.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Our team finished seventh overall and they had first place
- 11:37Speaker 2: finishes in eleven different.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Deliverables there as well.
- 11:40Speaker 2: And the one I'm particularly proud of is they won
- 11:43Speaker 2: an Outstanding Collaboration award from the organizers, and that was
- 11:46Speaker 2: for them being generous with their time with their practice
- 11:49Speaker 2: sessions that we got at Columbus Air Force Base. And
- 11:52Speaker 2: again kudos to the Air Force for you know, letting
- 11:54Speaker 2: us use their runways on a couple of off days
- 11:57Speaker 2: in order to test our vehicle, which we really appreciate.
- 11:59Speaker 2: So and we invited teams from the region, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 2: to come down and join us there and we shared
- 12:04Speaker 2: that and we also shared our Dino at CAVS with
- 12:07Speaker 2: these teams as well, so that that could help them
- 12:09Speaker 2: tune their vehicles, because not every facility at these different
- 12:12Speaker 2: universities has access to that. So I think, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 2: not only are we not only can we win first place,
- 12:18Speaker 2: but we can win with class yeah, and we can
- 12:21Speaker 2: win with some some you know, some sportsmanship, which I
- 12:24Speaker 2: really think is important, you know as well.
- 12:27Speaker 1: So and then the uh, the new car so to speak,
- 12:31Speaker 1: will be a Chevy Blazer EV yes pursuit vehicle.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yep, we are already on board to start. Were accepted
- 12:38Speaker 2: for the next four year competition. So we're committed for
- 12:41Speaker 2: the next four years. And we're really excited because this
- 12:44Speaker 2: is a Chevy Blazer EV police pursuit vehicle that's almost
- 12:49Speaker 2: five hundred horsepower, one hundred and thirty miles per hour
- 12:52Speaker 2: top speed, and incredible AMOUNTORQ right, so it's a EV.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So it's off the line really quick. This will be
- 12:58Speaker 2: a fun four years. I so now is a good
- 13:00Speaker 2: time to sign up and then get on board and
- 13:03Speaker 2: join the team.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Bagley College of Engineering students and faculty winning again in
- 13:09Speaker 1: the EcoCar EV Challenge. So your students competing all over
- 13:14Speaker 1: the country and winning, sometimes winning at all or in
- 13:19Speaker 1: eleven different deliverables Bagley dot MS State dot edu. Okay,
- 13:25Speaker 1: so this is exciting right here, doctor Ford, You've got
- 13:29Speaker 1: Applications are now open for fall of twenty twenty seven
- 13:34Speaker 1: to this world class College of Engineering at Mississippi State.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Now you know y'all go after the best and the brightest,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and so I know this is exciting for you and
- 13:46Speaker 1: your team to host high school students and parents. So,
- 13:50Speaker 1: because you've got a long list of things that you
- 13:53Speaker 1: can show, results matter here at Bagley College of Engineering.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Yep, absolutely yep.
- 13:59Speaker 2: And you can call Colin set up or email and
- 14:01Speaker 2: set up an appointment anytime. So Marley Robinson is basically
- 14:06Speaker 2: in charge of the recruitment for the Bagley College of Engineering.
- 14:09Speaker 2: She's assisted by a set of Bagley Ambassadors, about two
- 14:12Speaker 2: dozen students representing all different majors you know, from across
- 14:16Speaker 2: the college, several different you know places in their you know,
- 14:20Speaker 2: in their academic career, from freshmen all the way up
- 14:22Speaker 2: to seniors. And we are standing by ready to host
- 14:26Speaker 2: a visit for you. So just email visit Engineering at
- 14:31Speaker 2: Bagley dot m S State dot edu. So that's visit
- 14:35Speaker 2: Engineering at Bagley dot m S State dot edu and
- 14:38Speaker 2: you can set up an appointment where you can come
- 14:40Speaker 2: and visit. Then we also have you know, university days
- 14:43Speaker 2: where they're you know, doing recruiting kind of more broadly
- 14:45Speaker 2: across the university that you can coordinate with those as well.
- 14:48Speaker 2: And you mentioned our Preview days coming up in October
- 14:51Speaker 2: and November and the Engineering Discovery Day coming out November
- 14:55Speaker 2: tenth as well, So registration for MSU preview Days is
- 14:59Speaker 2: going to and later this month, and registration is already
- 15:02Speaker 2: open now for Engineering Discovery Day.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Visit Engineering at Bagley dot ms state dot edu. Applications
- 15:11Speaker 1: are now open for fall of twenty twenty seven. Come
- 15:15Speaker 1: on in campus visits. You get to see everything that's
- 15:18Speaker 1: happening here at the Baggley College of Engineering.
- 15:22Speaker 3: All right, Oh, this is cool.
- 15:24Speaker 1: All right, I like this Mississippi Golf Coast Engineering on
- 15:28Speaker 1: the Mississippi Golf Coach. Some people may go, well, doctor Ford,
- 15:32Speaker 1: what are you talking about? Yeah, so you have the floor.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. So this is an incredible option for our
- 15:37Speaker 2: friends down on the coast, right, folks who maybe are
- 15:39Speaker 2: a little bit more geographically tied to that area or
- 15:42Speaker 2: just you know, kind of want to be there. You
- 15:44Speaker 2: can get a full engineering degree from Bagley College of Engineering,
- 15:48Speaker 2: the same ones we give out from main campus by
- 15:51Speaker 2: participating on the coast. So our campus is co located
- 15:54Speaker 2: on the campus of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
- 15:58Speaker 2: so MGCCC. In Gashet as somebody who came here from
- 16:02Speaker 2: the north, I had to learn how to pronounce Gaschet.
- 16:04Speaker 2: It took neology, so I think I'm there. But at
- 16:08Speaker 2: any point in time, we've got about one hundred students
- 16:10Speaker 2: down there studying one of three majors. So we don't
- 16:13Speaker 2: offer every single major, you know, unfortunately down there. But
- 16:17Speaker 2: electrical engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering are all offered
- 16:21Speaker 2: down there. They're absolutely identical degrees to what we offer
- 16:25Speaker 2: on main campus, and because of our accreditation process, we
- 16:28Speaker 2: have to ensure that you really do get the same
- 16:30Speaker 2: experience in terms of sure the theory and the hands
- 16:34Speaker 2: on piece down there as you get, you know up
- 16:36Speaker 2: here on main campus.
- 16:37Speaker 3: That's an asset.
- 16:39Speaker 1: So again, electrical, industrial, and mechanical are offered on the
- 16:45Speaker 1: Mississippi Gulf Coast at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Campus
- 16:48Speaker 1: in GSCHET Absolutely okay, again, you can find so much
- 16:53Speaker 1: information Bagley dot ms state dot edu. Let me say
- 16:57Speaker 1: this again, Applications are now a for fall at twenty
- 17:01Speaker 1: twenty seven. Campus visits have started and they will continue
- 17:05Speaker 1: to go through the last half of the summer and
- 17:08Speaker 1: then the fall will be crazy September in a good way,
- 17:11Speaker 1: and you want to see parents and students and welcome
- 17:15Speaker 1: them because you have so much to show and offer
- 17:17Speaker 1: you're like, come on in.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah, and we'll get you hooked up with the
- 17:21Speaker 2: department that you're interested in. Talk with the department head,
- 17:23Speaker 2: talk with the faculty, see the facilities.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So whether again, whether you know what you really want
- 17:28Speaker 2: to do and you want to check it out, or
- 17:30Speaker 2: whether you want to explore you know, a couple of
- 17:32Speaker 2: different things. We can come up with a tour plan
- 17:35Speaker 2: right that basically to its points.
- 17:37Speaker 1: So you may think you want to go on biomedical engineering,
- 17:40Speaker 1: which is great, but you may come up here and go, oh,
- 17:43Speaker 1: aerospace engineering is my jam.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Yep, absolutely, yep, all right.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Dean dave Ford Bagley College of Engineering, Mississippi State University. Again,
- 17:53Speaker 1: world class students, world class research, and world class faculty.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Go ahead and get on line today Bagley dot ms
- 18:01Speaker 1: state dot edu and schedule your campus visit. All right,
- 18:07Speaker 1: dum oh current numbers. This is exciting. So what did
- 18:13Speaker 1: Kristen tell me? Over twenty eight thousand living alumps?
- 18:16Speaker 3: Right? That's correct, yep, unbelievable.
- 18:19Speaker 1: All right, So this this new freshman class for I mean,
- 18:23Speaker 1: they're all excited that you know, they're chomping at the
- 18:25Speaker 1: bit right there at home, right now, they can't wait
- 18:29Speaker 1: to move in the dorms and start experiencing, you know,
- 18:33Speaker 1: campus life. Both my kids, my daughter just graduated here
- 18:36Speaker 1: in May, had an unbelievable experience. My son will be
- 18:39Speaker 1: a senior. I can remember the excitement and anticipation going
- 18:44Speaker 1: into August. So you're about to welcome in a new
- 18:47Speaker 1: class at the Bagley College of Engineering. Talk about that
- 18:50Speaker 1: excitement and share the numbers with us.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely, you know, this is one of the great
- 18:54Speaker 2: parts about this job, is it, you know, the cycle
- 18:58Speaker 2: that you have in an academic year, right, So it's
- 19:00Speaker 2: you know, you kind of enjoy that that kind of
- 19:03Speaker 2: freedom and a little bit of you know, kind of
- 19:06Speaker 2: calmness in the summer.
- 19:07Speaker 4: But then just about when you get bored of that,
- 19:09Speaker 4: you're like, it's time for them to come back.
- 19:11Speaker 2: So we're super excited about them coming back.
- 19:14Speaker 4: And the numbers are going to.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Be bigger than ever we think, right, So official numbers
- 19:19Speaker 2: don't get published until November, when we should, you know,
- 19:21Speaker 2: kind of account for everybody who's sort of maybe transferred
- 19:23Speaker 2: in laid or left or you know, whatever it might be.
- 19:26Speaker 2: But you know, projecting forward, it looks like we're going
- 19:28Speaker 2: to have about somewhere between ten and fifteen percent more
- 19:31Speaker 2: freshmen as compared to last year's class, and again kind
- 19:35Speaker 2: of accounting for all the other years as well, that's
- 19:38Speaker 2: probably going to push us up about two to three percent.
- 19:40Speaker 2: And the undergraduate enrollment over last year, it's going to
- 19:43Speaker 2: represent a new high. It should be somewhere around forty
- 19:46Speaker 2: four hundred I think graduate students. Yeah, so with our
- 19:50Speaker 2: graduate students being over six hundred, that's going to you know,
- 19:53Speaker 2: put us well over five thousand, you know, total students.
- 19:56Speaker 2: I think you know, we're we're the biggest college by
- 19:59Speaker 2: numbers of enrollment. In fact, we even now have the
- 20:02Speaker 2: biggest program by enrollment. So mechanical Engineering is the number
- 20:06Speaker 2: one major by enrollment. We passed business and we passed kinesiology,
- 20:12Speaker 2: which are the other traditional members of the top three.
- 20:15Speaker 2: So we're really excited about that. I mean, engineering is
- 20:19Speaker 2: really drawing here, and our mechanical engineering department has been
- 20:23Speaker 2: doing a wonderful job on some things, including ID lab,
- 20:26Speaker 2: which we'll talk about at a few.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Us y'all gave me those notes and we've been talking
- 20:30Speaker 1: about that on the show. That's impressive.
- 20:33Speaker 2: We're going to expand that in a big way across
- 20:35Speaker 2: the college in the next six months to a year.
- 20:37Speaker 2: So I think that's you know, maybe maybe six months
- 20:39Speaker 2: or a year from now when we're talking, we'll have
- 20:41Speaker 2: some things to talk about there as well. So that's cool.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Dean Dave Ford, and we are here at the Bagley
- 20:50Speaker 1: College of Engineering, Mississippi State University. Now is the time
- 20:54Speaker 1: to go ahead and schedule a campus visit. Visit Engineering
- 20:59Speaker 1: at Bagley dot m S State dot edu now real quick.
- 21:04Speaker 1: MSU preview days are set for October twelfth, November ninth,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and November twenty third. Applications are now open for fall
- 21:13Speaker 1: of twenty twenty seven. And again that's Bagley dot m
- 21:17Speaker 1: S State, dot e d U. Okay, I love this part,
- 21:22Speaker 1: especially as a parent. I mean, wow, this gets you
- 21:25Speaker 1: up and makes you dance around the room. Student outcomes
- 21:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm just gonna say ninety four percent and
- 21:33Speaker 1: then I'm gonna let you have the floor again.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Yep, thanks both.
- 21:35Speaker 2: So, yeah, we're This is for the twenty twenty four
- 21:38Speaker 2: twenty five cohort. So we graduated about almost nine hundred
- 21:42Speaker 2: students in that time undergrads with a bachelor's degree. And
- 21:46Speaker 2: you know, following the rules of the organization that we
- 21:50Speaker 2: work with to track employment, we have to wait until
- 21:54Speaker 2: six months out, you know, to get sort of firm
- 21:56Speaker 2: numbers on that. So we're looking at the cohort that
- 21:58Speaker 2: graduated last year. Ninety four percent were employed, you know,
- 22:02Speaker 2: in a job in their field or had gone on
- 22:04Speaker 2: to graduate school, professional school, or military service, you know,
- 22:08Speaker 2: within six months of graduation. So the market is still
- 22:12Speaker 2: there for engineers.
- 22:14Speaker 4: They love our engineers.
- 22:16Speaker 2: We had two hundred and ninety five unique organizations higher
- 22:20Speaker 2: from that cohort, so you know, nine hundred students going
- 22:22Speaker 2: out there almost three hundred organizations involved in hiring them.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Our average salary was seventy six thousand and the high
- 22:30Speaker 2: was one hundred and ten thousand.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Which which was really good.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a really good number. And about a
- 22:38Speaker 2: quarter of the employers we saw were offering signing bonuses,
- 22:41Speaker 2: you know, somewhere a couple thousand, all the way up
- 22:43Speaker 2: to ten thousand dollars to sign with the company. So
- 22:47Speaker 2: so again that those numbers are are a little bit older,
- 22:50Speaker 2: but they have to be because we have to track
- 22:52Speaker 2: you know, six months out. But the feedback we're getting now,
- 22:56Speaker 2: I mean, I think the twenty twenty five, twenty six
- 22:58Speaker 2: cohort is going to be another, you know, another big one,
- 23:01Speaker 2: and so we're excited about that. And the fact is,
- 23:04Speaker 2: you know, four or five years down the road when
- 23:06Speaker 2: some of your listeners are would be graduating, right, you
- 23:09Speaker 2: just you never know. But the truth is, we just
- 23:11Speaker 2: do well in all times, right, I mean, Badley it's
- 23:14Speaker 2: a it's a it's a combination of theory and hands
- 23:17Speaker 2: on practice. And you of course we've told these stories
- 23:20Speaker 2: you know earlier here in the show.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's fast, it's prestigious, yep.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And basically what you're saying, and you've got the numbers
- 23:27Speaker 1: to back it up, is the demand is there for
- 23:30Speaker 1: Bagley College of Engineering.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Graduates exactly exactly, yep.
- 23:34Speaker 3: And I think that's why you and your team get
- 23:36Speaker 3: up exactly exactly.
- 23:37Speaker 4: That's what we do.
- 23:38Speaker 2: That's what we do, right, And it gets reflected.
- 23:40Speaker 4: In this times change.
- 23:42Speaker 2: The tools change instead of spreadsheets now.
- 23:44Speaker 4: It's AI right now. But but it's a tool, right.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And so we're you know, we're we're training our engineers
- 23:49Speaker 2: on how to use it, you know, ethically and productively,
- 23:52Speaker 2: and you know, you know, in a way that moves
- 23:54Speaker 2: the field forward, and so we're you know, we're confident
- 23:57Speaker 2: that we're going to you know, Badley is going to
- 23:59Speaker 2: remain a name.
- 24:00Speaker 3: No question. Actually, I think it's just doing this.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I think the trajectory is incredible and people, I think
- 24:09Speaker 1: big time students are going to continue to knock down
- 24:12Speaker 1: your door and want to be a part of it,
- 24:14Speaker 1: whichever direction they want to go. All right, Dean dave
- 24:18Speaker 1: Ford Bagley College of Engineering again, book your campus, visit
- 24:23Speaker 1: now Bagley dot MS State dot ed U, Bagley dot
- 24:29Speaker 1: m S State dot edu. We mentioned the over twenty
- 24:33Speaker 1: eight thousand living alum so many of them are super
- 24:37Speaker 1: successful in whatever shape, way, shape or form, and in
- 24:40Speaker 1: the private sector, in the public sector, whatever.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I mean.
- 24:43Speaker 1: You've got people right now that are making things happen
- 24:47Speaker 1: all across the country and the world. So, having said that,
- 24:53Speaker 1: if there's an alum listing that wants to get involved
- 24:57Speaker 1: financially or otherwise, y'all are all ways open to this absolutely,
- 25:02Speaker 1: whether they want to endow a scholarship, what you know, Hey,
- 25:05Speaker 1: we want to write a check, We want to get
- 25:07Speaker 1: involved here or there.
- 25:09Speaker 3: You're the door's open exactly.
- 25:11Speaker 2: There's a million ways to support us, right I mean again,
- 25:13Speaker 2: you just mentioned it, right. You want to support the students.
- 25:16Speaker 2: It's scholarships. Maybe it's supporting these student teams, right, so
- 25:19Speaker 2: they have money to travel a study abroad, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 2: is another one that that are it really is, especially
- 25:25Speaker 2: in today's world. And so but then again supporting faculty
- 25:29Speaker 2: as well, faculty research, you know, faculty, you know, advisors,
- 25:34Speaker 2: you know for these student teams, buildings, right, there's there's
- 25:37Speaker 2: all sorts of things that that that we could really
- 25:40Speaker 2: really use your help with and we'd appreciate it. But
- 25:43Speaker 2: beyond the financial piece again, just you know, get engaged.
- 25:47Speaker 2: If you haven't been talking to us for a while,
- 25:49Speaker 2: or you haven't been aware of what's going on, shoot
- 25:52Speaker 2: an email and you know, tell us what's going on
- 25:54Speaker 2: with you and and maybe some ways that you're interested
- 25:56Speaker 2: in in talking with our students giving back. Maybe your company,
- 25:59Speaker 2: maybe you're not hiring right now from Bagley, maybe you
- 26:01Speaker 2: want to join those three hundred apps companies that are right,
- 26:05Speaker 2: you know, so we're we're that's a great point, yeah, we're.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's one of the biggest ways you
- 26:09Speaker 2: can just directly give back, right is become an advocate
- 26:13Speaker 2: for our students, you know, at the place where you work.
- 26:16Speaker 1: So yeah, I had not thought of that, but it
- 26:19Speaker 1: means that's makes perfect sense and that's low hanging fruit. Ye,
- 26:23Speaker 1: you've got an engineer listing. That's like, hold on, we
- 26:26Speaker 1: haven't we haven't hired from this outstanding call it Bagley
- 26:29Speaker 1: College of Engineering.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Boom. That's a big deal for y'all.
- 26:32Speaker 1: But then to reach out he or she and say, hey,
- 26:35Speaker 1: tell us you know who you have coming through we
- 26:37Speaker 1: want to interview some people.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Absolutely makes a huge difference for the students, right, just yeah,
- 26:42Speaker 2: just having those those additional options. Yeah, So if you're
- 26:44Speaker 2: if you're a lonely MSU alum hasn't hired in a
- 26:47Speaker 2: while from us.
- 26:48Speaker 3: In your company, let's go, let's go. Yeah, all right, show.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Bagley dot m S State dot e d U.
- 26:57Speaker 3: I want to go over this again.
- 26:59Speaker 1: We we've got applications are now open for fallow twenty
- 27:02Speaker 1: twenty seven, parents and high school students. Here's the email
- 27:07Speaker 1: visit Engineering at Bagley dot Msstate dot edu. But you
- 27:12Speaker 1: can get that off the site too if you don't
- 27:14Speaker 1: remember all that campus visits so important. Once you get
- 27:19Speaker 1: on this campus and you see how pretty it is,
- 27:22Speaker 1: the people in this world class Bagley College of Engineering.
- 27:26Speaker 1: In my opinion, the cell is easy, but we want
- 27:29Speaker 1: to get them here. We want to get them here,
- 27:31Speaker 1: and so we want them to come on in now
- 27:35Speaker 1: as seniors or juniors and check out everything. Okay, So
- 27:39Speaker 1: we've got another national championship, World championship and international rocket
- 27:46Speaker 1: engineering competition with the Space Cowboys, which I think is
- 27:50Speaker 1: the coolest thing in the world. In fact, I got
- 27:52Speaker 1: to tell you this. Dean Scott Graw. The first thing
- 27:56Speaker 1: he said when he talked about you, he was like,
- 27:59Speaker 1: ask him about the Space Cowboys. It's incredible, And I
- 28:03Speaker 1: was like, I didn't even How did I not know
- 28:04Speaker 1: about it? Is kind of you know, locked in as
- 28:07Speaker 1: I am, And so then I started looking at it.
- 28:10Speaker 1: In our first interview, you talked about it, and how
- 28:13Speaker 1: cool is it between the time that we talked and
- 28:15Speaker 1: now y'all have won another national championship.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Yep, yep. The students are busy, yep.
- 28:20Speaker 2: They're just they're always working, right, and though that's the
- 28:23Speaker 2: beauty of it, right, a year from now they'll be
- 28:25Speaker 2: there'll be more of these stories. Sure, I can't wait
- 28:27Speaker 2: to share them. Yeah, I mean, because because the students
- 28:29Speaker 2: are always busy. They're talented, and they're hardworking, and they're
- 28:32Speaker 2: always doing.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Something ambitious and I love it. When I saw the
- 28:38Speaker 1: y'all dropped it on social media on Facebook, Bagley College
- 28:41Speaker 1: of Engineering, and so I saw the graphic and I
- 28:43Speaker 1: immediately text you.
- 28:45Speaker 3: And I was like, I got it.
- 28:46Speaker 4: I got text day.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I mean, Dean Ford has to be over the moon
- 28:50Speaker 1: that this college has won another national championship. So all
- 28:55Speaker 1: right again, campus visits campus visits, campus visits Bagley, ms
- 29:01Speaker 1: State dot edu.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Is there?
- 29:04Speaker 1: We're going to do this again sooner than later, especially
- 29:07Speaker 1: now with football, we got to hit this, you know,
- 29:10Speaker 1: at least a couple more times before the preview days
- 29:14Speaker 1: and the Engineering Discovery Day. Is there anything Doctor Ford
- 29:18Speaker 1: that I left off?
- 29:19Speaker 2: No, I think we covered a lot today, BO and
- 29:22Speaker 2: I look forward to talking more. Just really appreciate the
- 29:24Speaker 2: partnership joll be working with you, and just appreciate your
- 29:27Speaker 2: passion for MSU and the Bagley College of Engineering.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Well, and Kristen, thank you for putting everything together. This
- 29:35Speaker 1: was great and I can live endorse off this, which
- 29:37Speaker 1: is going to be great. I mean, parents and high
- 29:39Speaker 1: school students are going to love this. Thanks to Dean
- 29:43Speaker 1: Dave Ford, doctor Ford, and the team here at the
- 29:46Speaker 1: Bagley College of Engineering Mississippi State University again. Campus visits,
- 29:51Speaker 1: campus visits Bagley dot m S State dot edu. You
- 29:54Speaker 1: need to check out when the preview days are and
- 29:57Speaker 1: the Engineering Discovery Day all right, visit Engineering at Bagley
- 30:02Speaker 1: dot ms state dot ed U. Doctor Ford, thank you,
- 30:06Speaker 1: thanks both. We'll do it again in a few weeks.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Thanks for listening to the out of Boundshow ESPN one
- 30:11Speaker 1: oh five none the Zone
