• 0:01
Hey, it's 7:00 PM. I think that means it's time for the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast, man. [laughs] Let's ha- let's start the magic. Here it comes, in your ear hole. [imitates bubbling liquid] What is today?
• 0:17
It's the, uh, the 28th today, of November, just past the Thanksgiving weekend. And all the festivities therein. Wooey. Yes, it was a, uh, it was a festive Thanksgiving. What'd you do?
• 0:32
[smacks lips] Uh, successfully smoked a turkey, under slight duress. There was a, an oven panic at the house that it may not have worked. [laughs] Oh, I see. So follow up and just rely on that, so.
• 0:47
So you did the, the pre-smoke and then just, uh, heated it a little bit more in the oven? Uh, no, no. Oh. It wa- it was all smoker. Oh, right on. But- Cool...
• 0:55
yeah, the oven, the oven was having an issue so, uh- Copied it... I was like, it, my hand was forced. I was gonna do it anyways, but I couldn't screw up. [laughs] Yeah, no.
• 1:05
Uh, my, my brother-in-law smoked one too on a grill, so I, maybe that's the in thing now where- Yeah... it used to be frying a turkey- Same, same, same principle... yeah, now it's smoking a turkey. Yeah.
• 1:15
I mean- I mean, it just took all day long. I mean, I woke up at, uh, 4:20 y'all, and then got the coals up to temp by 5:00 and, and I think around 4 o'clock is when I pulled it off.
• 1:33
Wow, that was a full, a full 12-hour bird. Yeah. Or close to it. Yep, yep, yep. Yeah. Good on. Kept me busy. [laughs] So, uh, w- we're back in front of the microphones again with the studio set up in the shop now.
• 1:46
Yes, indeed. Can you dig it? [laughs] Yes, I can move it around like this. [laughs] That was, uh- And not, and not yell in a cup.
• 1:54
[laughs] Yeah, as much as the cup was fun, it's nice to have the stuff back that, uh, makes this a little bit easier, maybe. Plus it looks cool. Exactly.
• 2:02
When people walking by they're like, "What are those guys doing in there? I don't know, maybe we should stop in and check it out." 'Cause you can, right from the street, you can, you know, kinda, "Oh, wait, what, what?
• 2:12
Oh, oh." That was me. "What's that thing?" I can turn the microphone this way and look at them. Actually, I'm gonna do that. [laughs] Ah, copy that. Well, you got like a...
• 2:22
That one has a full 180 degrees of rotational ability. I just realized that now. [laughs] We can eyeball the people. I think I should get a, like an on air, um, sign and stick it in the window. Oh, yeah.
• 2:34
Yeah, yeah, yeah. For sure. You know, that would be like, "Hey, when the on air sign's on, come on in." That's not like, "Stay away," it's like, "No, no, please enter." In, in, in.
• 2:43
Um, we had a, a visitor today named Joe, he's, um, I met him at the 24, um, and he, uh, rides a Salsa Muckluck.
• 2:53
And he said, "Well, you know, in a couple of weeks I'm just gonna be riding up to Minocqua on it," which, I mean, from Milwaukee to Minocqua's 250 miles maybe? It's- Mm. I don't even wanna drive it. It's like a...
• 3:02
No, it's like a five or six-hour drive in a car. Yeah, yeah. And, um, he's, he's preparing to do Arrowhead or some qualifier for I- for the Iditarod. He wants to do the Iditarod.
• 3:13
And he'd done the, um, Great Divide race on it this year, but with 29er wheels i- instead of the fat bike wheels, and loaded down and said he had a great time, so. Yeah, yeah.
• 3:25
Cheers to you, Joe, and, uh, if you see the on air sign, uh, lit in the window, you're welcome to stop by [laughs] any time. We have a spare mic, uh, right now, so, you know, everyone is welcome.
• 3:36
And- All are welcome here, like Mother Abigail in The Stand. I think we're gonna get the, um, uh, what do you call it? The call in, call in deal going again. Oh, right on. Right on.
• 3:47
Um, that was kinda fun getting people to, to call in and e- even if they can't make it in, like, uh, "Hey, what's going on? Uh, you know, we're, we're out riding around and, uh..." Uh, no, y- you can do a...
• 3:57
No, you should do Dave, I'm gonna say. [laughs] We're riding- We're on the Alpha Trails. We're having a quad, doing some peer lessons. [laughs] Love you, Dave. All right. You're the greatest American ever lived.
• 4:09
Yeah, right. So, uh- At least that's what Baseplate's told me, so it's good... yeah, so Thanksgiving. Um, movies, there was movies. Yes. I went, I saw a movie. I did as well.
• 4:18
We f- we can finally talk about Bohemian Rhapsody a little bit- [laughs]... having actually seen it now, which is, uh, kinda interesting.
• 4:25
I mean, without seeing it, I coulda kinda told, you know, forecast the ending, and probably winged it if I hadn't seen it. [laughs] Oh. No, did it, did it end differently than real life? Yeah.
• 4:36
[laughs] It's like watching Titanic, I know what's happening. Um, yeah, but the in-betweens. That, yeah, it was well done. It was, it was a Brian Singer movie. And, you know, performances are pretty solid.
• 4:49
I realize the bass player, uh, Deacon, John Deacon, um, actor that played him was the little boy from Jurassic Park. Really? Wow. [laughs] So that was, what? I was really busy at work today, [laughs] as you can see.
• 5:05
Is that like 20 years ago or something? [laughs] How long ago was Jurassic Park? 25 probably. Do you remember the X-rated version, Your Ass Like Park? [laughs] No. Oh. [laughs] Oh.
• 5:14
I don't think I saw it, but I'm pretty sure if there wasn't one, that should've been one of 'em for- No, I can only imagine-... just because the-... I can only imagine what the Goldblum [laughs]
• 5:22
character on that would've been heaving. [laughs] How, uh, how the heck did Jeff- Must, must, must go faster... uh, how the heck did Jeff Goldblum become a sex symbol? I mean, like, somehow that happened, I guess. Yeah.
• 5:37
I don't know. More power to him. Most- Hallelujah, Jeff Goldblum... most definitely. But yeah- So-... it was, it was fun. It was fun. It was fun to watch. I mean, especially for crowd scenes and concert scenes. Right on.
• 5:49
Yeah, and I know that, um, both Brian May and, um, Roger Taylor were executive producers, so they, you know, gotta have had some input. Although- Yeah...
• 5:57
you know, we only get three sides of the coin instead of the fourth side of the- Right, right... wait. Well, yeah, and, and- So they have to have two coins to get four sides...
• 6:03
yeah, and that Deacon was, he was like, "Uh, I'm retired." [laughs] Right. [laughs] Do what you do. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Um, so, um, I, I'd recommend seeing it.
• 6:13
My daughter had come back for, uh, Thanksgiving break and she'd already seen it, and she said, "You guys have to go see this." And now of course, since we saw it, everybody was playing Queen in the house- Uh-huh...
• 6:24
over the Thanksgiving weekend, which now I could probably not listen to most Queen songs again- Right, right, right... for a, a few more weeks. Thank you very much, family. [laughs] And Bryan Singer. Yeah. And, yeah.
• 6:36
[laughs] Yeah. And another resurgence. I... [laughs] It happened again. It happened on the initial blast, and then Wayne's World, and now this one.
• 6:46
[laughs] So are you, are you pretty convinced that the dude that was, that didn't sign them or didn't, they didn't sign with was, uh, Mike Myers? Oh, yeah. For sure.
• 6:54
Yeah, 'cause it just was like, I was trying to pick him out and I... Was that him sitting in the, uh, in the scaffolding during the concert, you know? Right. Just 'cause there, there's sh- Yeah...
• 7:01
I thought maybe that kind of looked like Garth and Wayne, but- Exactly... um, anyway. That, that last 15 minutes, that concert footage is- Oh... I mean, it's- Insane. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
• 7:11
I mean, obviously one of the greatest shows of all time. Um- Yeah, I had, I had to, uh, I hit the, uh, Tube Of You and, uh, watched the original footage of it and man, it lines up. It lines up very well. Yeah, yeah.
• 7:26
Very well. I mean, I... It's fresh because I just saw it last night. [laughs] So I was like, "Wow. Yeah." And you know, everything, the little props on the piano, the blow the kiss. Ah. Well- Good stuff...
• 7:41
glad we finally got to talk about that. Yeah. [laughs] Right. So, uh, I don't know. Uh, there's a bunch of stuff having had gone on or going on coming up, um, both cycling and non-cycling here in Milwaukee.
• 7:57
Uh, non-cycling we could get out of the way quick. [laughs] How come you didn't come to the Vordas show? I was tired. Oh, man. I mean, I barely made it all the way after the, uh, Jungle Cross. Oh, yeah.
• 8:10
We'll talk about Jungle Cross in a sec. I forgot that was the same night. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. That day just seemed like that was the next day or something. No, it just kept going and I, uh, I was, I was just...
• 8:19
I, I could have made it there, but the, I, I would've just collapsed probably. No, there's, there were not many people there surprisingly the night before when we went. So we would've been very noticeable.
• 8:28
[laughs] Well, when we went the night before to the Vordas show, which actually was the following day- [laughs]... um, it was pretty packed, and this was less packed than that.
• 8:35
So James and I went there and, um, I don't know, if you're in Milwaukee and they show up, see them. Uh, I think they're mostly Chicago oriented, but um, they put on a 45-minute set that just never stops.
• 8:46
It's true old punk rock style. Um, just blast right through, you know, one minute to four minute songs and, and just power right into the next one and I, I totally appreciate that kind of show. Yeah.
• 8:59
I, I regret not going to it, but I knew that there were avatars going in my stead. Yeah. [laughs] So I could get a report.
• 9:07
So, um, Jungle Cross was just before that apparently, even though I thought that was the day before. [laughs] Right. [laughs] Yes. Yeah. I- Jungle Cross was the Saturday after Thanksgiving, isn't it?
• 9:19
Right, on the afternoon before the Vordas show. [laughs] So Jungle Cross turned out really well. I was surprised actually at the turnout because, um, it did-- We didn't really throw a bunch of stuff out there.
• 9:31
Zito obviously has a big following, so if he says he's doing something, people will usually show up 'cause they know it's gonna be a good time. But, um, the weather wasn't the best either. No.
• 9:41
And I know the cyclocross, uh, you know, those people like to torture themselves. [laughs] But, um, I think some of them were, I mean, surprised.
• 9:49
It was just a, it was like 40 degrees, so what had been frozen for the last few days before that wasn't frozen so much. And overnight there was a minor rain event- Yes... for a few hours- Yeah...
• 10:02
that just kind of gave a good soak on everything. Right. So it was just peanut butter everywhere. Peanut butter. Yeah. And it's a very clay oriented, uh, soil there.
• 10:11
But that said, I think, I don't know, there was like 38 racers or something like that. Yep. So it was, you know...
• 10:16
And there was another, at least that many spectators, because quite a few volunteers and/or spectators were there to cheer on the, the racers.
• 10:26
So I think, uh- With my arm raised, I was, you know, volunteer heckler/human berm- Yeah, director of traffic... and director, director of figure eight-ing. Char- char- gendarme on the- [laughs]...
• 10:38
on the, in the middle of the intersection. I know. I was, I was getting some pirouettes in. It was, I was getting laughed at a lot. I could see from about 20 yards away, like, "Ah, I know.
• 10:50
I'm just trying to do my job here." So, uh, props to Zito for pulling that one off. Yeah. It was, uh- It worked out. Dave, um- He d- he, he got a bunch of us to go help build it and, uh, got some people there to race and
• 11:02
got, uh, Sprecher to sponsor some beer and Great Lakes Distillery to sponsor some whiskey for the- Mm-hmm... for the rehorse drives. Rehorse rise. And then, um, and Surly gave up some stuff for prizes.
• 11:15
I got my Surly Do Not Arrest This Person koozie here, which- Yep, yep, yep... I hope you got one because- Yes, I did. Yeah... it's, it's pretty- Yeah, yeah... it's pretty cool. I was, I was right by a table when- Right?
• 11:24
[laughs] When, when the- When the flood gates opened, I'm like, "Mine!" Right. Hey- "I need one of these."... if you guys didn't win anything, just grab something from the table. Um, oddly- Not the fork- Oddly-...
• 11:34
or the handlebars or whatever that was. [laughs] All right. The second mention of Dave Lunz. Odd- oddly enough- [laughs]... he, he won his class somehow. Oh, yeah. Was, was he the only BMX bike in the class?
• 11:44
[laughs] Exactly. Still, he's a winner. Yeah, yeah. Dave, Dave Lunz is a winner. He was just on parade lap the whole time. So, um, we had our after party at Sprecher Brewery.
• 11:54
I had no idea they'd acquired so much property over there, because they own a significant amount of, uh, kind of older buildings that are now they're, whatever they're purposing them for.
• 12:03
But the upshot is they have so much land that we can have a fat bike race there. Yeah. That is, that was awesome.
• 12:09
Uh- I, I did some recon around the edge of the, the property just to kind of see- What might be possible and there's, it, it of course almost makes itself, but it's, uh- Yeah, thanks to Jesse and helping out all that.
• 12:21
That was- Yeah, yeah... that was fantastic. Yeah, it's gonna be a good thing. So, well, we'll let y'all know when we might have a race there.
• 12:28
It'll be somewhat non-UCI sponsored and underground-ish, but it will be, uh, probably a chriszito.com- [laughs]... Church of Two Wheels/, uh, whatever, um, you know, thing. Yeah. People who knows peoples.
• 12:45
Peoples who can get the peoples to have the funds. [laughs] Speaking of having fun, he's supposed to start a, a, a Tuesday night ride at some point, or maybe Wednesday. I don't know.
• 12:53
We gotta figure out what the day is, but- Right... I'm gonna get that rolling here one of these days, someday. Indeed. And yeah, well, Tuesday night is that $5 Marcus thing. [laughs] Oh, yeah.
• 13:06
We could- Not, not, not that I'm old... we could just go see a movie. It's also- Well, let's all go to a movie... I think it's, like, uh, $5 margaritas at, uh, Corazon until 6:00 or 7:00 [laughs] on Tuesdays too.
• 13:18
[laughs] Ah. Ah, yeah, yeah. So, or tacos. I don't know. They have a special over there on Tuesdays. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. I'm just pre-pro- But today- I, I'm pre-programmed to the Wednesdays. Yeah, right.
• 13:26
Well, I'm not- I'm like, "Oh, wine Wednesday over at our bar. Hey, visit." [laughs] What with having to have something to do after entertaining you fine people for whatever amount of time you give us, uh- Yes...
• 13:36
we have to go entertain ourselves then. [laughs] By the way, they better have pizza at, uh, Uptowner tonight. Oh, yes. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, it is 5:00.
• 13:45
Ah, and actually I went over to the store and picked up another Emil's for the house. I wonder how far- Even though I can't use my damn oven or I- Oh... I c- I can't personally. I don't know how to...
• 13:57
It works, but I don't want to play with the needle nose pliers to- Oh, boy... make it operate. [laughs] I wonder how far mine, uh- So just kinda leave it alone for now.
• 14:08
[laughs] How, how, how broad a distribution does Emil's have, I wonder? Is it just, uh, local or do they- Yeah, yeah... go, go many states wide from their 50 years in business or whatever it is?
• 14:17
Yeah, probably just at least state, at least state wide, 'cause I think it's Watertown if I'm not- Yeah, Watertown, Ferdville. Watertucky. Wa- Wata- Watucky. [laughs] So, uh, uh, more, uh...
• 14:30
So there are some fat bike events and then there's some other events. The fat bike events, if you check out fatbike.com, uh, there is an events calendar page, so if you're interested in...
• 14:40
I think a lot of it is fat bike races that are being posted, but, um, check that out, and if you are a, a, an event sponsor and/or promoter, uh, make sure you get your, uh, race up there on the calendar.
• 14:54
It, the, it is used by people, believe it or not. I think we have, what, three site visitors now or something that I know at least one of them uses it, so. Um, so we talked about Jungle Cross, wrap up.
• 15:06
Uh, so events, yeah, what do we got coming up then? Next on the docket is, uh- Rampage... yeah, Santa Rampage/Global Fat Bike Day. So the con- Oh, yes... the conundrum is what to do.
• 15:21
I, I, I mean the, the Manitowoc, uh, Global Fat Bike Day, uh, Two Rivers, uh, George from Broken Spoke, that's become a huge event. He was saying that he thinks there's gonna be 400 people up there this year, so. Nice.
• 15:35
Am I one of 400 or am I one of 700 here for Santa Rampage, or do we just get on our bikes and ride around town and [laughs]... Get on your bike and ride. Was that song in the movie? Um, was it? I, I don't know.
• 15:53
Fat Bo- yes, Fat Boy Girls was. Oh, yeah. It, yeah. And then I love how it's like- High School Race wasn't. Uh, right. Ring ring, that stuff. Yeah. It's kind of mixing the two together. Right, right.
• 16:02
Um, I like how they, uh, sort of, uh, my f- I, I think I'm in Love with My Car is one of, definitely one of my favorite Queen songs for sure. [laughs] But the, the bit about it in the movie was hilarious.
• 16:13
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's, you gotta see that if you like, if you like that song. [laughs] You got my hand on your grease gun.
• 16:20
[laughs] It, it just, it, it's such a great song and, and it's, I don't know how many other Queen songs that, um, Freddie Mercury doesn't sing, but that was not Freddie Mercury singing that song.
• 16:29
[laughs] It was, it was Roger. Roger. He got a fair, a fair bit of flack for that song, eh? [laughs] There's not gonna be a bunch of kids banging their head in a car. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 16:44
That was a good nod to himself. Right? Yeah. Yeah. Wow. Well, a little self-congratulations is always in order. [laughs] Our fine president has become a perfect practitioner- Tool... of said event. Of it.
• 16:58
Uh, okay, so I don't know. I, I, I'm torn on what to do with this weekend because I'm trying to figure out if Chuy's event is this weekend or next weekend in Rochester. Uh-huh.
• 17:09
It'd be kind of cool if it was next weekend 'cause then I'd have a whole nother week to gear up to go to Rochester to do it. Right, right. But, uh, I don't know. Maybe just stay in town. [laughs] Yeah, normally
• 17:20
things of that nature, I decide on the evening before or the morning of. [laughs] Have, having to get to the boat at 4:00 in the morning, yeah. Ah, yeah. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, that, that was not, wasn't...
• 17:33
[laughs] So if you, um, if you don't go or you're in the area here, um, the next day on Sunday is Chris Daisy's Zion Cyclery's first Fat Sunday
• 17:48
Zion Park/beach ride thing, fat bike oriented deal. Uh, first Sunday of every month I think for four month through March. Um, and we're, we're gonna start running some rides on Sundays out of the shop as well.
• 18:05
It's the one day I'm taking off because I wanna go ride my bike some. Standing around the shop all the time- [laughs]... not a whole lot of biking going on in here.
• 18:13
Uh, there's studio building and TV hanging and stuff of that nature, but Not a lot in the way of, uh, riding per se You don't have a trainer here? Where would I put it? [laughs] Right.
• 18:24
There's very little room in here right now. [laughs] Uh, that said, I, I want one of those, you know, with the TV screen and you can go up and down the hills and stuff. Peloton or- Peloton...
• 18:34
or- Yeah, that's- Or the Life Cycle or- No... whatever they're- Nah, I don't know about that. So, um, you could check out stuff about the Zion Cyclery Fat Sundays series. Uh, he's got a Facebook page.
• 18:46
He's got a website, zioncyclery.com. I think I'll probably get around to getting some show notes up for this show so you'll have a linky link in the show notes, and, uh, you know.
• 18:59
I'm kinda curious, what did, what do people think of Sven and JK back on the air now? Do you like us? Do you really, really like us? No. I feel like I need some validation here. [laughs] Yes. Oh.
• 19:13
After watching Freddy, I need my adulation- Right... where it's like, "Hey, oh, hey oh, hey oh, ah, oh, oh, hey oh." [laughs] Our, our friend, um, our friend Dr.
• 19:24
Mark stopped in last week and he said, uh, "Oh, it's good to hear you guys on the air again. I really..." He, he, he goes, "You're the voice of reason." I said, "What?" Amen.
• 19:35
[laughs] Uh, Irv said, "Good show, gentlemen." So there you go. So someone listened to it. Right on, right on. All, all one of our listener. [laughs] Thank you, sir. Appreciate it. Please listen again. Um, yeah.
• 19:49
You are the clay and we can make bricks now. Fortunately, it's not raining either, so- [laughs]... it's not gonna be so slippery.
• 19:56
[laughs] Well, allegedly it's supposed to be a little moist on Saturday for the Santa ride. Ah, that's mostly a- I don't know... that's mostly a street event and not so much a off-road event. Exactly.
• 20:09
Well, no, I'm just thinking of my very absorbent Santa gear. [laughs] Oh, right. Are you, do, are you still sporting the, uh- Santa Snuggie? [laughs] The Santa Snuggie. Yes. And I have Joe Boxer pajama Santa pants.
• 20:24
I, I, I haven't washed my Santa- Ever... outfit ever, I don't think so. Same here. [laughs] I've only treated it with a tent sealer. Yeah? And I ha- think I have to redo it- Well-... if, if it's gonna rain...
• 20:35
might not be a bad idea, or you could- Yeah... could wear some gear under it to... It just sops up so much water and gets heavy. Oh, it's a, it's insane. And, and it drapes over your leg and- Yeah...
• 20:43
gets caught in your chain. Yeah, there was one piece, like one little, like two square inch little area that I didn't treat and it was, it just permeated, like, my whole arm. [laughs] Like, right from there, and it, ugh.
• 20:59
I mean, granted, this was, like, seven years ago, but it, the memory sticks. [laughs] The memory remains. Yeah, that- Have you done it?...
• 21:06
that, that was, that was the one when, uh, uh, Tony Burger, uh, ended up, uh, with the, on, um, on the exercycle with the big Santa- Oh, right, right, right... ultra wind sail- Right, right, yeah, yeah... going downtown.
• 21:21
He's like, "I can't stop. I..." [laughs] Yeah, and it was kinda listing and, and, and, and getting in a rakish attitude. Well, yeah, and all the empties were going into it. [laughs] Yep. I kinda remember some of that.
• 21:34
[laughs] So yeah, Santa Rampage, right on. And then after that, beard competition over at the Falcon Bowl. Is that, that Saturday the 1st? Yep. Or, yeah. Yep, yep, yep. That's a later at night thing. Yeah, like 5:00-ish.
• 21:47
Remington Beard Bash. Hmm. Or, I don't know, Whisker Bash 6. Does that mean not getting as jolly with the holiday spirit before the event? No, no, no, that means carrying on the holiday spirit
• 22:05
over that way. 'Cause normally, normally that, uh, rampage breaks up in the 3, 4:00-ish zone, and then okay, rambling back to everyone's corner. Ding, ding, ding. Oh, hey, but the corner's over here.
• 22:21
Hey, Falcon Bowl's over here. Hey, there's a beard competition over here. Hey, you got a beard. Hey. [laughs] Yeah. Well, we do have beards this year again, so might be something to...
• 22:31
I haven't decided what to do now that it's there. It was sort of the- Yeah... Movember thing, and now it's already De- December almost, so gotta come up with something and/or get rid of it or I don't know.
• 22:44
Yeah, this is not the time, actually, to fully... I've done that before. No, you don't wanna get rid of it at all. No, no, no, this is- It'll be cold face time. Mm-mm, this is built-in face mask.
• 22:56
So I don't know what exactly what's going on the weekend after this one. What's going on? Is there anything coming up that you know of?
• 23:02
I know that the following weekend, the 15th, is, uh, Shell Track in Manitowoc, the first race in the 509 Cycles Snow Crown race series up there. That's not the same weekend as Frost Bike, is it? No, yes, it isn't.
• 23:17
