- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Bill Handle on demand from KFI AM
- 0:04Speaker 1: six forty.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Kf I AM six forty Bill Handle.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Here.
- 0:10Speaker 4: It is a Tuesday morning, February third time for a
- 0:14Speaker 4: tech segment with Rich Demurow. Rich heard live every Saturday
- 0:19Speaker 4: right here at KFI eleven am to two pm. He's
- 0:22Speaker 4: on KTLA TV every morning, Instagram at Rich on Tech website,
- 0:27Speaker 4: richontech dot TV, and good morning Rich.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Good morning to you, Bill.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Oh there you are. Okay, what ends up happening?
- 0:36Speaker 4: And I want to explain a little bit of inside
- 0:38Speaker 4: baseball to everybody who's listening.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Is these topics and Rich's case send.
- 0:43Speaker 4: He sends them to me because this is stuff that
- 0:45Speaker 4: he wants to talk about, which I'm always interested in.
- 0:49Speaker 4: So the first topic and it sort of went, huh really,
- 0:52Speaker 4: and that is the question how to watch the super
- 0:55Speaker 4: Bowl this weekend?
- 0:56Speaker 2: And I'm thinking, besides with your eyeballs red, which you
- 1:00Speaker 2: want to explain this to me?
- 1:03Speaker 5: Okay, Well, yeah, I knew actually when I wrote that,
- 1:06Speaker 5: I knew you were gonna pick up on this. So
- 1:09Speaker 5: just to be clear, yes, you can still watch the
- 1:11Speaker 5: super Bowl on NBC if you have it on your
- 1:15Speaker 5: streaming service like a YouTube TV or a Hulu TV
- 1:19Speaker 5: Live whatever you've got it, no problem, Spectrum Direct TV.
- 1:24Speaker 5: You can also watch it over the air for free,
- 1:27Speaker 5: right like, if you have an antenna, you can watch it.
- 1:29Speaker 5: So those are the two like basics. But we're talking
- 1:33Speaker 5: about streaming because I cover technology, and of course I'm
- 1:36Speaker 5: curious to see how this has evolved, this event with streaming.
- 1:39Speaker 5: And last year was a big year for the Super
- 1:42Speaker 5: Bowl because it was the first time that I remember
- 1:45Speaker 5: that it was super easy to stream for free to
- 1:49Speaker 5: anyone on Fox's two B app. This year, NBC owns
- 1:54Speaker 5: the game apparently, and they are using Peacock as their
- 1:58Speaker 5: streaming service. And here is the thing. They're doing it
- 2:01Speaker 5: in a great four k HDR stream, but you have
- 2:05Speaker 5: to be on a paid plan to watch it, which
- 2:08Speaker 5: I think is just wild compared to last year, so
- 2:11Speaker 5: many people got used to just downloading this app on
- 2:13Speaker 5: all their devices and watching the Super Bowl for free.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Not the case this year.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Okay, so I have YouTube TV, will I be able
- 2:22Speaker 4: to watch it? I also have Peacock, But forget about
- 2:24Speaker 4: the Peacock. Well I have any problem watching it on
- 2:27Speaker 4: straight Well, I guess it's just broadcast TV.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But over a cable in this case.
- 2:33Speaker 5: No, you should have no problem. The thing about the
- 2:35Speaker 5: Peacock to know, you know, because you're like you said,
- 2:37Speaker 5: your your YouTube TV is basically the equivalent of cable TV, right,
- 2:42Speaker 5: Like it's just it's standard TV. The Peacock stuff is
- 2:45Speaker 5: interesting because even if you're on their basic plan or
- 2:49Speaker 5: their free plan, it does not include live sports. So
- 2:52Speaker 5: you have to be on their Premium plan eleven dollars
- 2:55Speaker 5: a month or the Plus plan. But here's the thing, Bill,
- 2:58Speaker 5: And this is where this gets a little into conspiracy
- 3:01Speaker 5: theory for me, because every year I've subscribed to Peacock
- 3:05Speaker 5: for the past couple of years on Black Friday because
- 3:07Speaker 5: they had an incredible deal. It was like twenty dollars
- 3:10Speaker 5: for the whole year of Peacock. Well this year they
- 3:14Speaker 5: did not have any deal whatsoever on Black Friday. Now
- 3:18Speaker 5: to me, it all makes sense why they didn't have
- 3:20Speaker 5: a deal. It's because they know last minute they're going
- 3:24Speaker 5: to get millions of people. I mean, I don't know
- 3:26Speaker 5: how many, but they're going to get lots of people
- 3:28Speaker 5: signing up to watch the Super Bowl on Peacock. All
- 3:31Speaker 5: these people that are cord cutters, cable cutters. They don't
- 3:34Speaker 5: have a you know, standard signal in their home, and
- 3:36Speaker 5: they go, oh, I got peacock. I can download the app,
- 3:38Speaker 5: and they download the app and it says, oh, not
- 3:40Speaker 5: so fast, ten ninety nine. Buddy, there you go.
- 3:43Speaker 4: All right, let me ask you when you said something
- 3:45Speaker 4: about antennas. You can run an antenno. Now, when I
- 3:48Speaker 4: was a kid, we used to put the antenna on
- 3:49Speaker 4: the roof. That antenna looks like an arrow with you know,
- 3:54Speaker 4: the spikes coming out, and everybody had one on their
- 3:58Speaker 4: chimney or whatever. Are you talking about putting up an
- 4:01Speaker 4: antenna on the roof like what we used to do.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Well, I mean, depending on where you live, you may
- 4:08Speaker 5: or may not have to do that. You know, in
- 4:10Speaker 5: Los Angeles the signals are pretty strong from the mountains
- 4:14Speaker 5: that broadcast these TV stations. But you know, it all
- 4:18Speaker 5: depends on where you live. So in my house, I
- 4:20Speaker 5: can put an antenna inside, and I can put it
- 4:24Speaker 5: on a wall and I can get almost every single
- 4:27Speaker 5: channel for so clear full HD minus maybe one. But
- 4:31Speaker 5: I have to put on a different wall to get
- 4:32Speaker 5: the other one.
- 4:33Speaker 4: All right, fair enough, and before we take a break, now,
- 4:36Speaker 4: we can't use the term Super Bowl. We have to
- 4:40Speaker 4: use the term the Big Game because we are going
- 4:43Speaker 4: to connect this with a commercial I mentioned, and that
- 4:48Speaker 4: is what to look.
- 4:49Speaker 2: For in a new TV for the Big Game.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Are we going into that?
- 4:57Speaker 2: Sure? Okay, I didn't know if we were going to break. Okay, yeah,
- 4:59Speaker 2: no we are. We're gonna go to rink after this
- 5:01Speaker 2: in a.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Minute, Okay. So here's the deal with the new TV.
- 5:05Speaker 5: So Number one, you know, I interview a lot of
- 5:08Speaker 5: experts on my radio show every weekend right here on KFI,
- 5:11Speaker 5: and pretty much every TV expert that I interview, and
- 5:15Speaker 5: I test a lot of these myself. TCL it's incredible.
- 5:19Speaker 5: It does such a great job. The two top picks
- 5:22Speaker 5: for budget TVs under five hundred dollars under one thousand
- 5:25Speaker 5: dollars tcl QM five K, tcl QM six K.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Bill.
- 5:30Speaker 5: I was in the Video and Audio Center yesterday. It's
- 5:34Speaker 5: like a local chain of places. And I'm not kidding.
- 5:37Speaker 5: The TV prices have gotten so low. It's been a
- 5:41Speaker 5: while since I've bought one a couple of years. I
- 5:42Speaker 5: just can't believe it. Like I'm talking two thousand dollars
- 5:45Speaker 5: for a ninety eight inch TV. How is that? Possible.
- 5:48Speaker 5: But here's the keyword to look for. Number one thing
- 5:51Speaker 5: to look for Mini led That is your cheat code.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Look for that on the TV you're buying.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Okay, I have a TV repair shops? Please gone out
- 6:00Speaker 2: of business? Are they just done?
- 6:02Speaker 5: Funny you say that. I drove past one the other
- 6:05Speaker 5: day and I had been harassing them to do a
- 6:08Speaker 5: story because I'm so curious. They fix a lot of
- 6:11Speaker 5: old electronics, and they will not do the story. They
- 6:12Speaker 5: have no interest whatsoever. Because I'm not trying to advertise,
- 6:15Speaker 5: I don't care. I said, please, let's do it. It'd
- 6:18Speaker 5: be so fun to see what you're doing on a
- 6:19Speaker 5: daily basis. Doesn't want to do it?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Huh? Okay? Uh ninety eight inch TV?
- 6:26Speaker 4: I mean that fills up an entire wall, and that's
- 6:30Speaker 4: under two thousand dollars. I mean that it's truly crazy.
- 6:35Speaker 4: How heavy is out? How do you hang it on
- 6:37Speaker 4: the wall without putting in uh you know, basically putting
- 6:40Speaker 4: a new structure in the wall.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 5: No, I don't think you hang that one. That one
- 6:44Speaker 5: is too Uh. Yeah, I'm looking at on the website
- 6:47Speaker 5: right here. It's truly it's tcl again. Ninety eight inches,
- 6:50Speaker 5: that's just crazy for that.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You get it? How do you get it in the house? Big?
- 6:55Speaker 2: How do you get it into the house?
- 6:56Speaker 5: Like this would take yeah, it would take us several
- 6:58Speaker 5: people understand.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Okay, so it's heavy, But how do you physically get
- 7:03Speaker 4: a ninety atv inch TV into your house?
- 7:06Speaker 2: I mean you've got doors to deal with.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Yeah, well, it going sideway.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It is really thin.
- 7:12Speaker 5: But I'm trying to see if there's a pounds on here,
- 7:14Speaker 5: Like how many pounds this thing weighs? Here? It is
- 7:17Speaker 5: product weight withstand one hundred and seventeen pounds. Total back
- 7:21Speaker 5: is weight two hundred pounds.
- 7:22Speaker 4: That's easy, Psy, I have even two people lift that
- 7:25Speaker 4: up and going into your house.
- 7:28Speaker 2: That's amazing. Ninety eight inch TV? All right? Rich?
- 7:31Speaker 4: A couple of new pieces of technology. One is the AirTag,
- 7:36Speaker 4: Apple's new AirTag.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Now.
- 7:38Speaker 4: I have to be a big fan of air tag
- 7:40Speaker 4: because I use it whenever I travel. I put in
- 7:43Speaker 4: my suitcase so I know where my luggage is. Is
- 7:46Speaker 4: it on the airplane, is it in the luggage department?
- 7:50Speaker 4: Is it on the carousel? What does the new AirTag
- 7:54Speaker 4: do that the one I have currently doesn't do?
- 7:57Speaker 5: So the main thing about the new air tag, which,
- 8:00Speaker 5: by the way, you love them. A lot of people
- 8:02Speaker 5: love them. It's been five years since Apple launched them,
- 8:05Speaker 5: if you can believe that, because I remember we were
- 8:07Speaker 5: talking about it right here. This is the first new version.
- 8:11Speaker 5: So here there's two main things.
- 8:13Speaker 2: That are better.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Number one a longer what's called precision finding range. So
- 8:18Speaker 5: there's two ways in bill you can tell me if
- 8:20Speaker 5: you've ever done this, but you know, there's two ways
- 8:22Speaker 5: of finding your it's air tag. Number One, you can
- 8:25Speaker 5: look at it on a map. It will show you
- 8:27Speaker 5: where it is on a map at all times anywhere
- 8:29Speaker 5: in the world. And then you can also use this
- 8:32Speaker 5: thing called precision finding. And so precision finding is when
- 8:35Speaker 5: your phone actually when you're close to the air tag,
- 8:38Speaker 5: it will lead you right to it, and it will
- 8:40Speaker 5: say go left, go right, move forward, move backwards. And
- 8:43Speaker 5: of course there's a speaker on it too. That's a
- 8:45Speaker 5: third way to find it. But that precision finding range
- 8:50Speaker 5: is now longer. So what used to be in my
- 8:52Speaker 5: testing about fifty feet now it's closer to one hundred
- 8:55Speaker 5: and fifty feet. So your phone, if it's nearby in
- 8:57Speaker 5: your house you know, or somewhere, will lead you right
- 9:00Speaker 5: to where that air tag is.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Okay, and that's great for you know, finding a wallet.
- 9:06Speaker 4: For example, I'm always losing my wallet. I'm always losing
- 9:09Speaker 4: the remote on my TV. Is it small enough that
- 9:12Speaker 4: you can use those reasonably easily?
- 9:17Speaker 5: Yeah? You know what they actually have, And this is
- 9:20Speaker 5: one of the features I love. On the Amazon fireTV.
- 9:23Speaker 5: My remote actually has a built in finder capability, so
- 9:26Speaker 5: you can go if you lose your Like for me,
- 9:28Speaker 5: if I lose my Amazon fireTV remote, I just say Alexa,
- 9:32Speaker 5: find my remote and it rings the remote. Apple for
- 9:35Speaker 5: some reason, with the Apple TV, even though they have AirTag,
- 9:39Speaker 5: they have not built that feature into the remote. Why not?
- 9:42Speaker 5: I mean it always gets lost in the couch cushions
- 9:44Speaker 5: or whatever. So yes, there are some like cases you
- 9:48Speaker 5: can buy on Amazon where you kind of put it's
- 9:50Speaker 5: like a rubbery case you can put around your Apple
- 9:52Speaker 5: TV remote that does hold an air tag. Of course,
- 9:55Speaker 5: you know, you can get it for any remote control anyway.
- 9:58Speaker 5: That's so that's another feature. The speaker is now also louder,
- 10:02Speaker 5: so it's fifty percent louder than before, so that I'll
- 10:05Speaker 5: help you find it. And then also you can now
- 10:08Speaker 5: use your Apple Watch to help you find this thing.
- 10:11Speaker 5: So for the first time, you can have your Apple
- 10:14Speaker 5: Watch lead you to the air tag, which has never
- 10:17Speaker 5: been done before. So that's new. Pricing is still the
- 10:19Speaker 5: same twenty nine dollars for one of these, ninety nine
- 10:22Speaker 5: dollars for a four pack. Existing accessories still work. Usually
- 10:26Speaker 5: when Apple comes out with something new, they kind of
- 10:28Speaker 5: change a tiny little fraction of it of an inch
- 10:31Speaker 5: or something, and then you have to get all new stuff. No,
- 10:33Speaker 5: everything's going to work just the same. There's no reason
- 10:36Speaker 5: to update your old or to upgrade your old air tags.
- 10:39Speaker 5: They're still going to work just fine moving forward. If
- 10:41Speaker 5: you want the new ones, that's what you can look
- 10:43Speaker 5: forward to.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I have a black remote and a black couch
- 10:47Speaker 4: that does not work out very well.
- 10:48Speaker 2: I'm constantly looking for it. And then the Ring.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Has what's called a search party for lost dogs. This
- 10:56Speaker 4: is important because everybody loves their dogs.
- 11:00Speaker 5: Absolutely, and this is one of those things where Ring
- 11:02Speaker 5: was actually very smart, because this is a very sophisticated
- 11:06Speaker 5: system that scans basically random people's camera footage for dogs
- 11:13Speaker 5: and it's using AI. Now that sounds very scary because
- 11:16Speaker 5: if they were doing that for humans, you know, for
- 11:18Speaker 5: like an APB or something like that. People would be
- 11:20Speaker 5: up in arms. But because it's dogs, it's like they're
- 11:23Speaker 5: wading into it. They're tiptoeing into this field of like,
- 11:26Speaker 5: we have all these cameras out there, and yes, we
- 11:29Speaker 5: can find stuff really well, everything from a license plate
- 11:31Speaker 5: to a person. They're not using it for that just yet,
- 11:35Speaker 5: but dogs, we think everyone can agree on this is
- 11:39Speaker 5: a good use of this technology. So basically they're opening
- 11:42Speaker 5: this up to everyone. If you have a lost dog,
- 11:45Speaker 5: you can now download the Ring app and you can
- 11:47Speaker 5: upload a picture of your dog and say we're you know,
- 11:50Speaker 5: the neighborhood you're in, and it will scan all those
- 11:52Speaker 5: area cameras for your dog. If it finds it, it
- 11:55Speaker 5: will alert the neighbor, not you. It will alert them
- 11:59Speaker 5: and then they have the option to help find this
- 12:01Speaker 5: dog and reunite it with you.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Does it work on incredibly ugly people?
- 12:05Speaker 4: Too?
- 12:08Speaker 3: Ugly people are ugly dogs? Ugly people? Never mind that
- 12:12Speaker 3: one almost worked out. Okay, Rich tomorrow here him live
- 12:18Speaker 3: every Saturday right here on KFI eleven am to two
- 12:21Speaker 3: pm every morning on KTLA TV, Instagram, at rich on
- 12:27Speaker 3: Tech website, rich on tech dot TV, and Rich you
- 12:32Speaker 3: want to listen to this last segment and you'll see
- 12:36Speaker 3: how rude and crude I am.
- 12:37Speaker 4: You just don't think how horrible people are. You're way
- 12:41Speaker 4: too nice for this. All right, take care, Rich, We'll
- 12:45Speaker 4: catch you next week. I'll see you this weekend, or
- 12:46Speaker 4: I'll catch you this weekend, Rich tomorrow.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:50Speaker 4: The housing market. I love to talk about housing a
- 12:53Speaker 4: lot and hope choppers have actually given up a lot
- 12:58Speaker 4: of them because the depressed market. Sales are stuck at
- 13:04Speaker 4: a thirty year low. So it's miserable except if you're
- 13:07Speaker 4: buying a house and all of a sudden you're enjoying
- 13:10Speaker 4: discounts at the highest rate in years. Sixty two percent.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Now there's my there we go, right, Okay, let me
- 13:20Speaker 4: turn that off. My prescription is waiting for me at Kaiser.
- 13:23Speaker 4: About sixty two percent of buyers last year purchased a
- 13:27Speaker 4: home below the original price.
- 13:29Speaker 2: By the way, it's for.
- 13:31Speaker 4: A penicillin, and I'm going to tell you, I'm not
- 13:33Speaker 4: going to tell you why I need it.
- 13:35Speaker 2: An average discount for.
- 13:36Speaker 4: The home sold below their original price eight percent, I
- 13:41Speaker 4: mean eight percent doesn't seem like a lot, right, well
- 13:44Speaker 4: on a million dollar home, which is not unusual, especially
- 13:46Speaker 4: here in California. That's eighty thousand dollars. I mean, that'll
- 13:50Speaker 4: buy you a few cups of coffee at Starbucks. And
- 13:55Speaker 4: so what's happening now is that sellers are giving all
- 13:58Speaker 4: kinds of concessions. The housing market is tilting back in
- 14:02Speaker 4: the buyer's favor. From twenty to twenty twenty to twenty
- 14:06Speaker 4: twenty two, man, you couldn't buy a house.
- 14:10Speaker 6: You know, I mean the sellers people were bidding overbidding,
- 14:14Speaker 6: you know, they'd list the house and pay one hundred
- 14:17Speaker 6: thousand dollars more and people would be buying houses sit unseen.
- 14:21Speaker 2: There were no houses. And why is that?
- 14:25Speaker 4: Well, everybody that owned a house that was even considering
- 14:28Speaker 4: selling a house. Guy was able to refi at three percent,
- 14:32Speaker 4: and you're not going to give that up. Well, three
- 14:34Speaker 4: percent money is disappearing, our memory is it's fading. And
- 14:39Speaker 4: now we're back to a realistic about six percent, give
- 14:41Speaker 4: or take. So the housing market is tilting back in
- 14:45Speaker 4: the buyer's favor. And so now the situation has completely flipped.
- 14:52Speaker 4: The housing market in the US in December had six
- 14:55Speaker 4: hundred thousand more sellers than buyers. And that's the biggest
- 14:59Speaker 4: gaps since twenty thirteen and would be buyers right our
- 15:05Speaker 4: sideline by high home prices elevated mortgage rates. So home
- 15:10Speaker 4: buying is fairly low in demand, except that there are
- 15:16Speaker 4: a lot more sellers out there. So those who are
- 15:19Speaker 4: buying a house, well, you have a lot of negotiating power,
- 15:25Speaker 4: and so now it's kind of fair.
- 15:26Speaker 2: It used to be ridiculous. Now it's fair.
- 15:29Speaker 4: It's sort of right in line with where it should be.
- 15:32Speaker 4: And there were times when people couldn't sell their houses
- 15:35Speaker 4: at all. We're giving away houses and it went the
- 15:40Speaker 4: other way.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Not anymore.
- 15:43Speaker 4: So if you're out buying a house, I mean, it's
- 15:46Speaker 4: still way expensive and you're not going to get three
- 15:49Speaker 4: percent money. But if you are in the market for
- 15:51Speaker 4: a house, let me tell you now is the time
- 15:55Speaker 4: to do it, because I don't know what the future
- 15:57Speaker 4: is going to bring. When I bought my house two
- 15:59Speaker 4: years ago, I paid a lot of money. I think
- 16:03Speaker 4: I paid over market. It turned out that I paid
- 16:06Speaker 4: about market. Because here we are two years later, and
- 16:09Speaker 4: you would think it goes up five percent.
- 16:11Speaker 2: A year is usually what you think real estate homes
- 16:13Speaker 2: go up.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Well, the prices are the same hasn't moved, so we'll
- 16:18Speaker 4: see what happened. Not that it matters to me, because
- 16:20Speaker 4: this is my house. I'm going to end up dying.
- 16:22Speaker 4: In a matter of fact, I do that normally on
- 16:25Speaker 4: the show. At least two three times a week.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I die.
- 16:28Speaker 4: But it's if I were to sell my house, I'm
- 16:31Speaker 4: going to get about what I paid for it now,
- 16:34Speaker 4: less commissions, less esco, that sort of thing.
- 16:36Speaker 2: So I'm going to basically take a.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Loss watching all the changes you made. Yeah, I know
- 16:42Speaker 4: I made a lot of change. Yeah, I don't know
- 16:43Speaker 4: if I'm ever going to get that money back because
- 16:45Speaker 4: I came in and remodeled. That's another reason why home
- 16:49Speaker 4: buyers are being reluctant.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It used to be they would buy anything.
- 16:55Speaker 4: And now they come into a house and realize, oh boy,
- 16:58Speaker 4: we're going to have to spend some money on rem modeling.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Or the inspection comes back and it's a lot more
- 17:05Speaker 4: money to bring it up to code or bring it
- 17:07Speaker 4: up to a livable standard than they thought. So after
- 17:12Speaker 4: inspection they bail out. So now you're seeing how now
- 17:15Speaker 4: you're seeing prices drop from crazy to about normal right
- 17:19Speaker 4: now where buyers are actually negotiating and see We'll see
- 17:23Speaker 4: what happens over the next couple of years. Can't wait
- 17:26Speaker 4: to see. And I've been buying houses well, and not
- 17:29Speaker 4: buying houses as an investment vehicle, but I bought my
- 17:32Speaker 4: first house in my twenties. Can you imagine buying your
- 17:35Speaker 4: first house in your twenties? Who in God's name can
- 17:39Speaker 4: buy a house in their twenties today? It is impossible,
- 17:43Speaker 4: but it was a lot of years ago I started practicing.
- 17:47Speaker 4: I also made a good living right out of law school.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Who makes a good living right out of law school?
- 17:52Speaker 2: Nobody?
- 17:53Speaker 4: Now if you have to be graduating top ten percent
- 17:56Speaker 4: from one of the ivs, yeah, you're gonna do just fine.
- 17:59Speaker 1: My goal was to own a house by forty and
- 18:03Speaker 1: I bought a house at forty, So knock it on
- 18:08Speaker 1: that door.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Not twenty shoot, yeah, well I wasn't twenty. I think
- 18:13Speaker 4: I was twenty seven or twenty eight, but still in
- 18:16Speaker 4: my twenties. All right, As we finish our show, and
- 18:20Speaker 4: I've been talking about this.
- 18:22Speaker 2: One a whole lot for fifty years.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Having a bachelor's degree or higher led to much better
- 18:28Speaker 4: employment prospects, greater pay, greater job security. Well that is flipped.
- 18:34Speaker 4: That has flipped and why. Well, the bottom line is
- 18:38Speaker 4: AI has a great deal to do with it, and
- 18:42Speaker 4: businesses just shrinking white collar workers, and the unemployment gap
- 18:48Speaker 4: between workers with bachelor's degrees and those with occupational degrees
- 18:53Speaker 4: read two years degrees, plumbers, electricians, pipe fitters, and some
- 18:56Speaker 4: not even degreed with an AA that flipped last year.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Trade worker's slight edge and it is getting wider. And
- 19:07Speaker 4: that's the first time trade workers have a leg up
- 19:12Speaker 4: since the Bureau of Labor Statistics even started tracking in
- 19:15Speaker 4: the nineteen ninety And it's all about today's labor market obviously,
- 19:21Speaker 4: and economics are saying, man, this is one of the
- 19:23Speaker 4: most vexing problems, especially for entry level applicants, and that
- 19:29Speaker 4: is exactly what's going on. My daughter finished her bachelor's
- 19:33Speaker 4: degree in computer science, getting a trying to get an
- 19:36Speaker 4: entry level computer science job.
- 19:38Speaker 2: They don't exist. AI has taken over.
- 19:42Speaker 4: You just can't get a job, which is why she's
- 19:44Speaker 4: starting her master's degree. So she is going to in
- 19:46Speaker 4: a couple of years have a master's degree and be unemployable,
- 19:50Speaker 4: and then we don't know what.
- 19:51Speaker 2: The hell she's going to do.
- 19:53Speaker 4: And just to give you an idea, you get out
- 19:56Speaker 4: of college and you try to get a job.
- 19:58Speaker 2: What do you think you're going to get paid? Okay,
- 20:00Speaker 2: not much.
- 20:01Speaker 4: So let's say you decided you're not going to college
- 20:04Speaker 4: and you're not going to pay insane tuition. Let's say
- 20:07Speaker 4: you go and you learn how to be an elevator
- 20:09Speaker 4: repair person or installer. Average salary one hundred and three
- 20:15Speaker 4: thousand dollars a year. Aircraft mechanic eighty five thousand dollars
- 20:20Speaker 4: a year, with in southern California being a lot higher
- 20:23Speaker 4: because they're much more in demand. Aircraft mechanic eighty five thousand,
- 20:29Speaker 4: electrical power power line installer ninety thousand, HVAC technician sixty
- 20:36Speaker 4: five thousand, not so much, dental hygienist ninety five thousand dollars.
- 20:42Speaker 4: And do you need a certificate? Usually you do, but
- 20:45Speaker 4: it's a two year degree. Right Power Distribution and Dispatch
- 20:51Speaker 4: ninety four thousand. I mean, it goes on and on
- 20:54Speaker 4: with these occupational degrees or occupational experience and just the description.
- 21:01Speaker 4: And by the way, let me give you the national
- 21:03Speaker 4: demand for these. National demand for entry level computer work
- 21:08Speaker 4: is about zero. National demand for the elevator person is
- 21:12Speaker 4: very high. Aircraft mechanic is growing, the power line installer, high,
- 21:18Speaker 4: HVAC technician steady, dental hygienus high is what the national
- 21:25Speaker 4: demand is.
- 21:27Speaker 2: So now, why would you go to college?
- 21:33Speaker 4: If I had kids today, which I do, I would
- 21:36Speaker 4: tell them what are you doing in school? What are
- 21:39Speaker 4: you doing? And school is so expensive now? But the
- 21:45Speaker 4: minute my kids were born, I started a college fund
- 21:48Speaker 4: from them. So if they want to go to college,
- 21:50Speaker 4: there's money there. But I'm telling them why why would
- 21:54Speaker 4: you do it? You're going to end up with half
- 21:56Speaker 4: the money and fewer job prospects, as a matter of fact,
- 22:00Speaker 4: almost none in certain cases. Then if you go out
- 22:03Speaker 4: and learn how to do HVAC heating and air conditioning
- 22:07Speaker 4: or become an airline mechanic, does it take some time? Yeah,
- 22:11Speaker 4: you know, it's like going to college. You have to
- 22:12Speaker 4: do an apprenticeship in most cases, especially in construction work,
- 22:16Speaker 4: but you get paid. College costs you money. You pay
- 22:20Speaker 4: to go to college, You get paid to even be
- 22:24Speaker 4: an apprentice. It's like the whole concept of which I've
- 22:28Speaker 4: never understood. During games, professional games, well my team won, No, No,
- 22:34Speaker 4: it's not your team. You pay to go to those games.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Do you understand when you say my team. That means
- 22:42Speaker 4: you own the team. Just want to point that out.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Are you familiar with five guys? You like five guys Burgers?
- 22:49Speaker 2: I do? Yeah? Great.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Do you know the story behind that that? It was
- 22:55Speaker 1: so the father and you know the family, they put
- 22:58Speaker 1: money in for college for the boys, and when it
- 23:02Speaker 1: was tied for them to college, go to college, the
- 23:04Speaker 1: father basically said, you can use this for college, or
- 23:07Speaker 1: you can pitch me a business idea. And they pitched
- 23:11Speaker 1: the idea of five guys and it's huge. Oh yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 1: it's north instead of college. Good for them.
- 23:18Speaker 4: I mean they could have gone to college and still
- 23:20Speaker 4: be working at thirty eight thousand dollars a year.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Okay, guys, we're done. Coming up, it's Gary and Shannon.
- 23:25Speaker 2: We're again back tomorrow starting with Amy and Will wake up,
- 23:30Speaker 2: Call Neil and I jump aboard at six, and then
- 23:33Speaker 2: Cono and An of course are always here because well
- 23:37Speaker 2: they went to college and are starving working here at
