- 1:18Speaker 2: about the Drew Brees Hall of Fame August eighth, which
- 1:22Speaker 2: is weird. It's a week from this weekend, and I
- 1:27Speaker 2: kind of feel I'm like, I'm not ready. I don't
- 1:31Speaker 2: I don't know why, but it's what now, all right,
- 1:37Speaker 2: We're getting ready. We may have to put something together
- 1:41Speaker 2: next week. And actually I want to know from is
- 1:48Speaker 2: there anybody listening that's going I mean, I know we
- 1:52Speaker 2: have big, big, big big Saints market Jackson, I bet,
- 1:57Speaker 2: I mean we're streaming everywhere, MISISIPI Coast, North Mississippi, New Orleans. Whatever.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Is there anybody listening that's going to Canton, Ohio for
- 2:07Speaker 2: the Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend and the exhibition game?
- 2:11Speaker 2: Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Keighley, Adam Dennit, Terry, Roger,
- 2:17Speaker 2: Craig class. Is there anybody going? Hit us up on
- 2:23Speaker 2: the text line six one eight eight, five three seven
- 2:27Speaker 2: seven six. Sean Pateon will be there, Mickey Loomis will
- 2:30Speaker 2: be there. I'm assuming like Marquise Colston, Reggie Bush, Deuce McAllister,
- 2:39Speaker 2: Pierre Thomas. I don't know enough of the offensive lineman,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but they'll be there, some of them, you know, maybe
- 2:50Speaker 2: who'd you say, Graham, Jimmy Jimmy Graham. Cam Jordan may
- 2:54Speaker 2: be there. Shockley went through the same Shockley. The reason
- 2:57Speaker 2: that Shockley I think will be there. He did, and
- 3:00Speaker 2: the reason being is he called a tuddy in the
- 3:04Speaker 2: Super Bowl? Did he catch one against the Colts? I
- 3:08Speaker 2: did not. I'd forgotten that, okay, okay, oh well yeah,
- 3:14Speaker 2: in that game it was low scoring. I mean, think
- 3:16Speaker 2: about it. The Saints had to get six points on
- 3:18Speaker 2: defense and picking special teams. Well that wasn't six, but yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 2: they got they as they write about in the book,
- 3:25Speaker 2: Shawn's whole premise on that and when it went well, yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 2: but but the reason for the on side kick coming
- 3:35Speaker 2: out of halftime was to take a possession from Peyton, right,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I mean that that was what they had worked on
- 3:41Speaker 2: for two weeks going into the Super Bowl in Miami.
- 3:44Speaker 2: They knew that they couldn't stop him. But if he
- 3:49Speaker 2: we we all know this, If he doesn't have the football,
- 3:51Speaker 2: then we're talking about a different thing, right, And uh,
- 3:56Speaker 2: when when Jeff Duncan talks about it in the book
- 3:59Speaker 2: Peyton and and it's an incredible story in chapter of
- 4:04Speaker 2: how Sean kept it quiet. I mean, you know they
- 4:10Speaker 2: were working on it, and they were thinking about doing
- 4:15Speaker 2: this for fourteen days, right, and then Sean had the
- 4:18Speaker 2: balls to do. I mean ninety nine point nine percent
- 4:22Speaker 2: not that some of these that I'm talking about in
- 4:24Speaker 2: this ninety nine point nine percent aren't good coaches, sure,
- 4:26Speaker 2: but ninety nine point nine percent of coaches are not
- 4:29Speaker 2: going to have the bells to kick an on side
- 4:32Speaker 2: kick in the Super Bowl. It's not like he had.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I know, he was already winning at Dow Orleans and
- 4:38Speaker 3: his job was not in jeopardy.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But it's not like he had two Super Bowl wins
- 4:43Speaker 2: under his belt. No, Okay, I know he had been
- 4:46Speaker 2: by then to two NFC Championship games, lost one of
- 4:49Speaker 2: the Bears, one one obviously against the Vikings, which put
- 4:52Speaker 2: them in this game that we're referencing. But dude, to
- 4:55Speaker 2: have Look, there's a lot.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Of things that are gone over in the conference room
- 5:00Speaker 3: and in the film room.
- 5:02Speaker 2: But then well, no, first of all having the stones
- 5:08Speaker 2: to call it and then executing it in what is
- 5:12Speaker 2: the biggest game of the year in sports in our country,
- 5:15Speaker 2: which is saying something because a lot of other sports
- 5:18Speaker 2: have huge games, but it's the biggest game of the
- 5:21Speaker 2: year on the biggest stage where more people watch it
- 5:24Speaker 2: than anything else, and they also watch it all around
- 5:26Speaker 2: the world. Not that Sean's thinking about that necessarily, but
- 5:30Speaker 2: to call that play was insane.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Man.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Now back to Shaky. He called a touchdown in the
- 5:35Speaker 3: Super Bowl. Hey Jeremy, Okay, to me, Jeremy missed it.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I don't know what he's doing. He should have done
- 5:42Speaker 2: new media. Absolutely. I think he was Uh, he barely
- 5:45Speaker 2: missed it.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Yeah, he could still do it. Yeah, he can still
- 5:50Speaker 3: do it. The man has made some money. He's hanging out. Yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 3: he's a first round pick, he's a Super Bowl chant,
- 5:56Speaker 3: two time super Bowl champ.
- 6:00Speaker 2: He needs being the hall. Easy, slow down. I know
- 6:06Speaker 2: he wanted. He got us, He got us a title.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Put him in there. Okay, where you go. What's his
- 6:12Speaker 2: first name, Jeremy, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I keep wanting to
- 6:14Speaker 2: say something else is Jeremy Shocky. He wasn't quite good,
- 6:21Speaker 2: you know, obviously Kelsey and I mean, this isn't fair,
- 6:25Speaker 2: but Gronk and Kelsey, Yeah, we're so good and and
- 6:33Speaker 2: we're able to win so many super Bowls.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Yeah, they could have used Shocky like that. In high
- 6:39Speaker 3: school he was he led the uh like, he was
- 6:41Speaker 3: the number one punt returner. All he did was return
- 6:43Speaker 3: punts for touchdowns. Really, yeah, he was just one of
- 6:47Speaker 3: those guys. Was that good an athletes in Oklahoma? Was
- 6:50Speaker 3: all district, all county. Remember when Eli was in the
- 6:52Speaker 3: Super Bowl and he was hurt. Remember I don't think
- 6:55Speaker 3: he did not play, but he got the They kept
- 6:58Speaker 3: they kept showing him in the suite. Yeah, okay, that's right.
- 7:01Speaker 3: It was a big part of that team. Six five
- 7:03Speaker 3: is he where where do you go to college Miami?
- 7:06Speaker 2: He was a part of that. I knew that.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Yeah, he was on that team McGahee and Dorsey and
- 7:12Speaker 3: was he on the O one team that played Ohio
- 7:13Speaker 3: State They won't He's as he's all American that Ken
- 7:19Speaker 3: Dorsey was the starting quarterback kdns Junior.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I have a buddy, you know when we we meet,
- 7:27Speaker 2: when we go you know, Jake Coker is part of
- 7:29Speaker 2: the Pearl River Resort Sports marketing team, right, we all
- 7:34Speaker 2: are brand ambassador, as are mc gillespie. Jake Cocher, so
- 7:40Speaker 2: so a buddy in the group when we're all hanging out.
- 7:44Speaker 2: You know, we were just down in the Missisippi golf
- 7:46Speaker 2: coast at Harrison and the Boervotch. We have a buddy
- 7:50Speaker 2: in the group that I mean, we'll mess with Cocher.
- 7:55Speaker 2: He grabs and I'm thinking about Jeremy Shockey and how
- 7:58Speaker 2: Ken Dorsey had it made. This is where I'm going.
- 8:01Speaker 2: He goes, Yeah, man, Jake Coker is the greatest college
- 8:05Speaker 2: quarterback to hand the ball to Derrick Henry and win
- 8:08Speaker 2: a national championship. I'm like, dang, that's cold. Now, it's cold.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I mean, but cocher. You would be surprised like that there.
- 8:21Speaker 2: He could be a p R I c K. Yeah
- 8:25Speaker 2: he's not. No, he is a good self deprecating dude
- 8:29Speaker 2: to win a national title and he'll always be one
- 8:33Speaker 2: of those guys. Oh yeah at Alabama that was a
- 8:37Speaker 2: national championship quarterback to be one of those guys. Okay,
- 8:44Speaker 2: he's he's super not but that guy does it to
- 8:46Speaker 2: him every time. He and he'll he'll grab him and
- 8:49Speaker 2: he'll be like talking. He goes, do you know this
- 8:50Speaker 2: is the guy who handed the ball to Derrick Henry
- 8:52Speaker 2: so that Alabama could win the national championship for a year.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I'm like, dang, that is cold brother. Dancing Rabbit Golf

- 9:09Speaker 2: Livingston Pair with an ice cold stell artwise h.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Never say never, but never and we're rolling here we
- 10:12Speaker 4: go out of bounds ESPN one oh five downe the zone.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Somebody asked me about is our Mississippi State fans putting
- 10:22Speaker 2: too much pressure on Camaro? Are you know? Are the
- 10:24Speaker 2: expectations too high for Camaro? Taylor and uh I thought
- 10:30Speaker 2: about it. And I'll tell I think that Camaro Taylor
- 10:35Speaker 2: and Trinidad Chambliss are under an enormous amount of pressure
- 10:38Speaker 2: because Trinidad had such a spectacular year that the expectations
- 10:43Speaker 2: are for him to be damn near perfect, which is
- 10:45Speaker 2: not going to happen, even though he was probably the
- 10:47Speaker 2: best decision maker at quarterback in college football last year,
- 10:51Speaker 2: and and then with Camaro Taylor, he didn't play that much,
- 10:57Speaker 2: but because of his physical skills, size, strength, athleticism, there's
- 11:06Speaker 2: a lot of excitement around him, as there should be,
- 11:10Speaker 2: and so the answer would be yes, the expectations are
- 11:16Speaker 2: insanely high for both. Trinidad's already done it in big
- 11:23Speaker 2: games on the national stage, so it's part of it.
- 11:29Speaker 2: They'll be good and bad moments. Of course, Trinidad's in
- 11:33Speaker 2: a you know, more a program with more talent, but
- 11:39Speaker 2: he's also got a new OC and a new head
- 11:41Speaker 2: coach and that's that's a factor. And then Camario has
- 11:46Speaker 2: you know, all new basically a lot of new personnel
- 11:48Speaker 2: around him. I mean, that's same with Trinidad. That's where
- 11:51Speaker 2: we are. I mean, I read an old miss article about,
- 11:54Speaker 2: you know, with the new wide receivers It's taken a
- 11:57Speaker 2: lot over the summer to build the chemistry. Tomorrow and
- 12:00Speaker 2: Trinidad have been trying to do that throughout June and July,
- 12:02Speaker 2: as they should and here in spring Ball two. But
- 12:06Speaker 2: June and July you get your out there five days
- 12:08Speaker 2: a week with your skill players, with your buddy, your teammates.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I can't wait to see the highs and lows and
- 12:17Speaker 2: how the two handle them. I do. Yeah, I mean,
- 12:19Speaker 2: I've said it before. Camaro Taylor is a true sophomore.
- 12:24Speaker 2: He's not a fifth year, He's not a fourth year.
- 12:27Speaker 2: This is his first year to start. Jackson Dart struggled
- 12:33Speaker 2: at times his first year to start at Old Miss.
- 12:36Speaker 2: He was coming off playing as a true freshman for
- 12:39Speaker 2: Southern cal in about four games, and so there's some
- 12:43Speaker 2: similarities there between the two. Now Dart you know, better
- 12:51Speaker 2: roster and so on. And keivin unbelievable OC. Levy's trying
- 12:55Speaker 2: to develop into an unbelievable OC and play caller. But yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 2: I mean, the expectations are high, but he can still
- 13:05Speaker 2: make the plays that can extend Levy's career.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Who knows what how it'll shake out supposed to be.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I mean it's a clear path.
- 13:14Speaker 2: To six wins, you know, and again that's just that's
- 13:17Speaker 2: still kind of driven by mediocrity. Need to do something
- 13:20Speaker 2: spec you know, which would you need to do something
- 13:23Speaker 2: that's kind of over above and beyond h for the
- 13:26Speaker 2: first time in the program in a while, and that
- 13:28Speaker 2: would be seven wins. The league was super watered down
- 13:32Speaker 2: last year. I don't think it's been that water down
- 13:35Speaker 2: in the modern era. I mean, I know it hasn't.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I mean, Georgia didn't jump off the page at you.
- 13:41Speaker 2: LSU wasn't mean good on offense, Bama couldn't run the football.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Texas lost its mojo and its way from the start
- 13:47Speaker 2: against Ohio State, who embarrassed them in Game one. Florida
- 13:51Speaker 2: and Auburn were down, Mississippi State, Arkansas and Kentucky were awful.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Vanderbilt went ten and two. Didn't jump off the page
- 13:58Speaker 2: at you, Ole, miss win eleven and one didn't jump
- 14:00Speaker 2: off the page at you. That's where we are. But
- 14:04Speaker 2: you know, still the teams that won were good teams. Yeah,
- 14:09Speaker 2: Bart two, I think he maybe he thinks that the
- 14:11Speaker 2: league will be even more watered down this year than last.
- 14:14Speaker 2: What a great up. I mean, it shouldn't be that
- 14:18Speaker 2: big for the most part, shouldn't be that big of
- 14:22Speaker 2: a gap between the overwhelming majority of the teams in
- 14:25Speaker 2: the league. Another GAP's a gap, But we're not talking
- 14:30Speaker 2: twenty ten, h twenty fourteen, twenty eighteen, twenty twenty before
- 14:38Speaker 2: all this got you know, disrupted. Is that fair if
- 14:41Speaker 2: you If you disagree, that's great. Dancing Rabbit golf text
- 14:46Speaker 2: line six zho one eight eight five three seven seven
- 14:49Speaker 2: six let me switch gears. Keep it local. Last year
- 14:52Speaker 2: we had I think it was last year, we had
- 14:54Speaker 2: Derrek Nicks and Dexter mccluster on the show when they
- 14:57Speaker 2: were going in the Missippi Sports Hall Fame. They were
- 14:59Speaker 2: both they were on the air. Derrek Nixt played at
- 15:02Speaker 2: Southern Miss coach at Old Miss forever. Now he's been
- 15:05Speaker 2: at Auburn. Now he's at Alabama. He's de Boor's wide
- 15:08Speaker 2: receivers coach. Yeah, he's from Alabama, which is interesting, right.
- 15:13Speaker 2: They didn't want him. He told the story, Bama never
- 15:18Speaker 2: wanted him. Auburn off from late late late Southern Miss
- 15:20Speaker 2: had been on him. His dad said, you're going to
- 15:23Speaker 2: Southern Miss. He had a really good career. He got
- 15:26Speaker 2: sick bounced back so on. Then he ends up long
- 15:31Speaker 2: run at Old Miss I think fifteen years as an
- 15:33Speaker 2: assistant coach, goes to Auburn and was there for three years.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Now he's at Alabama dexter mcluster is working for some
- 15:44Speaker 2: workout facility. It may be he may have ownership in
- 15:47Speaker 2: it where he's training people in Nashville, Tennessee. So we
- 15:52Speaker 2: did all that last year, right, and we've had plenty
- 15:55Speaker 2: of inductees on the show over the years. This year's
- 16:00Speaker 2: group that's going in this weekend at the Mississippi Sports
- 16:03Speaker 2: Hall of Fame, which, by the way, Drawdown of Champions
- 16:06Speaker 2: tickets are still available at msfame dot com. That's the
- 16:11Speaker 2: big party on Friday night. It's a ton of fun.
- 16:14Speaker 2: The inductees are there, past inductees are there. Then the
- 16:18Speaker 2: next morning for two hours they signed autographs. And then
- 16:23Speaker 2: that night at the Sheraton at the Refuge is the
- 16:26Speaker 2: big brew haha induction ceremony. But Friday night is the
- 16:30Speaker 2: party party. Drawdown of Champions really fun, you can move around.
- 16:35Speaker 2: It's great. Let me give you the lineup of twenty
- 16:38Speaker 2: twenty six Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductees. Glenn Collins,
- 16:44Speaker 2: great player for Mississippi State football. Lewis Guy great player
- 16:49Speaker 2: for Ole miss in football, part of some of those
- 16:53Speaker 2: nineteen sixty teams that were sixties teams that were fantastic.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Michael Haddocks again played with Glenn Collins, same era John Bond.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Haddocks ended up first round pick for the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Haddocks was a great player. Bobby Halford longtime William Carey
- 17:15Speaker 2: baseball coach, thirteen hundred career wins, thirteen hundred. Ronnie Myers
- 17:26Speaker 2: legendary swimming and diving coach and later athletic director at
- 17:30Speaker 2: Delta State. Johnny Parker pioneer in strength and conditioning. Parker
- 17:37Speaker 2: coach for thirty five years at the college and professional levels,
- 17:40Speaker 2: winning three Super Bowl rings with the New York Johnson
- 17:43Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and his innovative training methods influenced generations
- 17:49Speaker 2: of coaches and athletes nationwide. Strength and conditioning three rings
- 17:55Speaker 2: and Britney Reese, of course, one of the most decorated
- 17:58Speaker 2: athletes in Mississippi history, went to Ole miss two time
- 18:01Speaker 2: NCAA champion in track and field. That is the twenty
- 18:09Speaker 2: twenty six Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame class.
- 18:16Speaker 3: They will be inducted this weekend. The Drawdown of Champions
- 18:21Speaker 3: is the big Friday night party. It's great msfame dot
- 18:25Speaker 3: Com plus the drawdowns five thousand dollars if you win it,
- 18:29Speaker 3: but think about all kinds of fun stuff. It's a
- 18:32Speaker 3: rockstar auction. It's one of the top ones in the state.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Yeah Yeah, msfame dot Com to get tickets to the
- 18:44Speaker 3: Drawdown of Champions. Msfame dot com to get tickets to
- 18:50Speaker 3: the Drawdown of Champions for the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Big, big, big, big weekend. Congratulations to all the inductees.
- 19:13Speaker 2: He's will go into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Our coverage is brought to you by Sound and Communications
- 19:21Speaker 2: soundcomav dot Com, the absolute leader in video walls.
- 19:26Speaker 3: For your hospital, all right, for your athletic facility, for
- 19:30Speaker 3: your church, all powered.
- 19:32Speaker 2: By sound Sound Sound and Communications soundcomav dot Com is
- 19:38Speaker 2: the leader in video walls. We welcome in Mike Detilier
- 19:42Speaker 2: WWL Radio TV New Orleans. He covered Sean and Drew
- 19:46Speaker 2: from the Jump every single day, every single week through
- 19:49Speaker 2: the magical time that gave us unbelievable right experiences that
- 19:55Speaker 2: we're talking about We've been playing the audio from Drew
- 19:59Speaker 2: Brees this morning talking about it came down to Miami
- 20:03Speaker 2: and New Orleans and if Miami takes him and the
- 20:06Speaker 2: doctors don't say no, then Saban doesn't go to Alabama,
- 20:10Speaker 2: and then what does the college football and the SEC
- 20:13Speaker 2: look like? That we all love, So we bring in
- 20:15Speaker 2: Mike D on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line. Mike D.
- 20:21Speaker 2: We've had many segments with you on Drew, but we
- 20:24Speaker 2: can't do enough. What was it like right when Drew
- 20:29Speaker 2: got to know this young, young, young Drew Brees that's
- 20:32Speaker 2: trying to rehab his shoulder and boyish good looks. Maybe
- 20:38Speaker 2: I don't know if naive is the right word because
- 20:40Speaker 2: he's already been in the NFL and proven, But what
- 20:43Speaker 2: was it like to cover him that first year? Mike D.
- 20:48Speaker 5: It was a lot of different features to it, you know,
- 20:54Speaker 5: having watched him, just how successful he was for Due
- 20:59Speaker 5: and then he goes to San Diego and you know
- 21:03Speaker 5: he hit some high notes there, but you eventually, once
- 21:07Speaker 5: they picked Philip Rivers in round one, that he wasn't
- 21:11Speaker 5: going to stay there, that something was going to happen,
- 21:15Speaker 5: and he came in here with a chip on his shoulder. Again,
- 21:20Speaker 5: he had been through surgery that had not been done
- 21:24Speaker 5: before at that time Doctor James Andrews had done surgery,
- 21:32Speaker 5: but not on the quarterback position and coming back from that.
- 21:39Speaker 5: And so from a demeanor standpoint, he's always been a
- 21:42Speaker 5: super focused guy. He's always been the type of individual
- 21:47Speaker 5: that's going to give you everything. He's got to get
- 21:51Speaker 5: back to playing. But there was a lot of uncertainty
- 21:57Speaker 5: about Drew Brees because there was no textbook about this
- 22:02Speaker 5: is how so and sol came back from that jury
- 22:06Speaker 5: that had not happened before. And so while there was
- 22:11Speaker 5: excitement because the team had drafted Reggie Bush, Sean had
- 22:18Speaker 5: a lot of excitement around him, Drew had a lot
- 22:21Speaker 5: of excitement around him, there was also uncertainty. And I
- 22:27Speaker 5: remember Zach Street telling me the story that you know, listen,
- 22:33Speaker 5: he said, I'm just trying to make the team at
- 22:35Speaker 5: this point, I'm a late round pick. I'm trying to
- 22:38Speaker 5: make the team. But in watching him through the first
- 22:41Speaker 5: few times, he was like, man, you know, he never
- 22:44Speaker 5: threw football more than twenty yards in trading camp. You
- 22:50Speaker 5: think about that, never threw a football more than twenty
- 22:54Speaker 5: yards and Zach was like, Okay, I guess maybe it'll
- 22:58Speaker 5: come around. And I think it was the third preseason game.
- 23:02Speaker 5: They called the play and you know then you would
- 23:06Speaker 5: be a longer pass and Drew hid it and Zach was, Okay,
- 23:10Speaker 5: that's why we got him. That's that's why we got him.
- 23:14Speaker 5: So it was a process with it. But I'll be
- 23:17Speaker 5: honest with you, his demeanor on how he changed things
- 23:21Speaker 5: and how he reacted to everyone and everybody never really changed. Wow,
- 23:29Speaker 5: the Drew Brees that came in and ose six to
- 23:32Speaker 5: the Drew Brees when he were tired, he was the
- 23:34Speaker 5: same guy. Okay, so a little bit richer towards the end,
- 23:40Speaker 5: but other than that, he was the same guy. And
- 23:45Speaker 5: his interaction and you know, he sort of has a
- 23:49Speaker 5: bit of a dry sense of humor about it, and
- 23:52Speaker 5: so you get accustomed to, you know, his personality and
- 23:56Speaker 5: just how he reacts to certain things, and you know,
- 24:01Speaker 5: he's the guys he's all business. Now, I'm gonna be honest,
- 24:05Speaker 5: he is all business. And he'll you know, he'll have
- 24:10Speaker 5: a little good time, you know, and that sort of thing.
- 24:13Speaker 5: But man, he's all about doing wood's best to get
- 24:18Speaker 5: himself better as a player, and I never thought he'd
- 24:22Speaker 5: be a coach because I thought, you know, those type
- 24:25Speaker 5: individuals sometimes they don't understand what other people go through
- 24:31Speaker 5: to struggle, and he did have his struggles. But it's
- 24:36Speaker 5: hard for a guy who is that great to teach
- 24:41Speaker 5: somebody else. Yeah, okay, you can work with him and
- 24:46Speaker 5: try to help him, but it's hard to teach him
- 24:50Speaker 5: what you know. That would be like Nolan Ryan. Okay,
- 24:53Speaker 5: let me teach you how to throw a fastball. Okay,
- 24:57Speaker 5: Nolan knows how to do it and he can help
- 25:00Speaker 5: you with it, but it would be really difficult for him.
- 25:05Speaker 5: And I'm glad you brought it up. Rukas. Actually, he's
- 25:10Speaker 5: he's going to join us this afternoon on sports talk.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Okay, I'm jealous. I'm jealous.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Yeah, he's coming on at five thirty. Glad to have
- 25:21Speaker 5: him on. And he's, uh, he's been working out, you know,
- 25:24Speaker 5: in California with Saints quarterbacks and receivers.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Oh wow, All right, Mike Detillier will have Drew Brees
- 25:34Speaker 2: on w w L Radio, New Orleans Mike d Afternoon Drive.
- 25:39Speaker 2: And that's cool. We've interviewed some cool people. But the
- 25:43Speaker 2: fact that Mike's interviewed Drew Brees one hundred times or whatever.
- 25:47Speaker 2: I'm jealous. Okay, So with Drew year one, they got
- 25:52Speaker 2: the NFC Championship game. When did you know, Mike d
- 25:56Speaker 2: that the theme was cooking? When were you sitting up
- 25:59Speaker 2: there in the press or on WWL where you said,
- 26:03Speaker 2: holy smokes, this team could do something really special in
- 26:06Speaker 2: year one of Drew.
- 26:07Speaker 5: And Shaw, the first couple of games that was like, okay,
- 26:13Speaker 5: there's some momentum on this team. Really didn't know how
- 26:16Speaker 5: good they were. They had twenty nine new players on
- 26:20Speaker 5: a fifty three man roster. The thick of that, you know,
- 26:26Speaker 5: it was a new coaching staff. We didn't know a
- 26:30Speaker 5: lot about Sean Payton and his coaching staff, and it
- 26:35Speaker 5: was sort of a get to know in year one.
- 26:38Speaker 5: But I would take midway into the season he started
- 26:42Speaker 5: to have the feeling this team was really good. And
- 26:48Speaker 5: I had good thoughts early on that they could run
- 26:51Speaker 5: the ball because you know, with that combination in the
- 26:55Speaker 5: backfield of Luce McAllister and read you Bush that was
- 27:02Speaker 5: really dynamic. The surprise was Marcus Colston was a seventh
- 27:07Speaker 5: round pick and what he was able to do in
- 27:12Speaker 5: year one, their offensive line played really well. The defense,
- 27:19Speaker 5: it was kind of a thrown together unit and Gary
- 27:23Speaker 5: Gary Gibbs did a really good job of coordinating that defense.
- 27:29Speaker 5: But I would say it was probably midway into the
- 27:32Speaker 5: season because I mean, there are people always put this
- 27:35Speaker 5: pie in the sky stuff, but early on you really
- 27:41Speaker 5: didn't know because there were so many new elements to
- 27:46Speaker 5: this football team, and how would it stay together. You know, Okay,
- 27:51Speaker 5: they got off to a hot start, but would it
- 27:54Speaker 5: be able to sustain this midway into the season. Now
- 27:59Speaker 5: Drew's cooking, they got a running game, and you saying, hey,
- 28:04Speaker 5: you know, they might be pretty dull going good here,
- 28:07Speaker 5: and sure enough to think that that team that had
- 28:11Speaker 5: won three games the year before, you know, goes to
- 28:15Speaker 5: the NFC Championship game. I always told this to coach Peyton.
- 28:20Speaker 5: It was the greatest coaching job he ever did in
- 28:22Speaker 5: New Orleans. It was the very best when you have
- 28:26Speaker 5: that many and you plays players on a team and
- 28:30Speaker 5: piecing that all together. I used this term two days
- 28:36Speaker 5: ago when somebody asked me to describe it. I said,
- 28:38Speaker 5: it was the first NFL NIL team get to get
- 28:43Speaker 5: deep into playoffs, because you think about twenty nine or
- 28:48Speaker 5: fifty three, when you guys that that's a chunk, and
- 28:54Speaker 5: boy it worked, and man, they started to believe in themselves,
- 29:00Speaker 5: started to believe in Drew. And you had a really
- 29:03Speaker 5: dynamic backfield with Druce McCallister in his prime along with
- 29:09Speaker 5: Reggie Bush.
- 29:11Speaker 2: What Mike Ntilier has been covering the Saints for forty years,
- 29:14Speaker 2: He joins us on the Out of Bounds Show. Drew
- 29:16Speaker 2: Brees first ballot Hall of Famer. Y'all all know he
- 29:19Speaker 2: brought the Lombardi Trophy to New Orleans, Super Bowl, Sean
- 29:23Speaker 2: Drew and so many others, And as Drew said in
- 29:27Speaker 2: the audio that we dropped earlier, he realized that he
- 29:30Speaker 2: was going to be a part of the resurrection of
- 29:33Speaker 2: one of America's greatest cities. And the rest is history.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Football drove it, Culinary drove it, Mike lived it, and
- 29:40Speaker 2: people rallied and it was just it was increasing. They
- 29:43Speaker 2: went to the NFC Championship game in year one. Mike,
- 29:46Speaker 2: what was that first home playoff game, like, I think
- 29:50Speaker 2: against the Eagles in the Supernome.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Yeah. Man, it was a crazy atmosphere. We were doing
- 29:56Speaker 5: pregame outside Okay at that time, and man, the fans
- 30:03Speaker 5: were some revved up about it. And the Eagles came
- 30:06Speaker 5: in here with a would a bad to the bone defense.
- 30:09Speaker 5: They were really good and that game, the one thing
- 30:12Speaker 5: I remember was Deuce. I mean he sort of put
- 30:16Speaker 5: that team on his back late and he carried him
- 30:20Speaker 5: through running the football. He was fantastic in that game.
- 30:25Speaker 5: But the atmosphere was electric. Uh no matter, because I parked.
- 30:35Speaker 5: Somebody actually drove me to the game. So we actually
- 30:38Speaker 5: parked about a block and a half away from the
- 30:42Speaker 5: dome and I had to walk, uh you know to
- 30:46Speaker 5: where we did three k man, you got stopped, like
- 30:49Speaker 5: every two steps stop, two steps stopped. People were all excited.
- 30:55Speaker 5: They were some thrilled that the Saints were, you know,
- 31:01Speaker 5: in the playoffs, had an opportunity. The day before, the
- 31:08Speaker 5: NBC Nightly News did a segment on the Saints and
- 31:13Speaker 5: I got interviewed for it, and I'm like, man, NBC
- 31:17Speaker 5: Nightly News doing a story on the Saints, and it
- 31:21Speaker 5: went to show that, you know, I think the win,
- 31:27Speaker 5: the winning ways that the Saints got for many people
- 31:31Speaker 5: who suffered devastating losses in Katrina. It was sort of
- 31:37Speaker 5: the look beyond you know, hey, look we difficult times
- 31:43Speaker 5: and it gave them some relief. And I think every
- 31:47Speaker 5: player that talked to you back then said the same
- 31:50Speaker 5: thing that they knew they were playing for something bigger
- 31:55Speaker 5: than just a football game. You were playing for a
- 31:58Speaker 5: community that had really been devastated in many ways, and
- 32:04Speaker 5: they wanted to give everything they had to them to
- 32:07Speaker 5: give to make them happy for a little while. And
- 32:10Speaker 5: then you know, you have to go home and try
- 32:12Speaker 5: to rebuild everything. So it was. It was a crazy time.
- 32:17Speaker 5: And you know, I live sixty miles south and to
- 32:22Speaker 5: the west of New Orleans. The community I live in,
- 32:27Speaker 5: we didn't really have much damage done for Katrina at all.
- 32:34Speaker 5: It goes to show what you know with a hurricane,
- 32:36Speaker 5: how you know you're just living a little bit away
- 32:39Speaker 5: and how it doesn't affect you. Now, Ida was a
- 32:42Speaker 5: different story. We got through. I got a direct hit
- 32:45Speaker 5: from Ida, but Katrina, we didn't get that. Here on
- 32:49Speaker 5: the Bayou at all. Are very little of it. And
- 32:53Speaker 5: yet the New Orleans and Medici community really really caught it.
- 32:57Speaker 5: And when the levees broke was unbelievable devastation. No matter
- 33:03Speaker 5: where you passed, you know, there were furniture and people's
- 33:07Speaker 5: you know, stuff inside their home that were outside. You know,
- 33:11Speaker 5: it was damaged and you didn't have it anymore. He
- 33:15Speaker 5: lost it. So many people lost everything with it, and
- 33:18Speaker 5: I think the players felt that that. You know, hey, listen,
- 33:21Speaker 5: we planned for something a lot bigger than a football game.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Mike Detilier WWL Radio on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line.
- 33:32Speaker 2: He's sharing stories of the resurrection of one of America's
- 33:38Speaker 2: greatest cities, New Orleans, post Katrina, and what Drew Brees
- 33:42Speaker 2: and Sean Payton, among many many others did for the city,
- 33:47Speaker 2: Drew's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on
- 33:49Speaker 2: August eighth, and who that nation will be partying on
- 33:54Speaker 2: that Saturday. Mike, if you could pinpoint one thing that
- 33:58Speaker 2: this is hard to do because he did so many things. Well,
- 34:02Speaker 2: if but you've been around NFL people for forty years,
- 34:06Speaker 2: if you could pinpoint one thing that made Drew Brees
- 34:11Speaker 2: the quarterback that he is. What was it?
- 34:16Speaker 5: His passion for the game. I mean, I've been around
- 34:20Speaker 5: a lot of athletes, but very few of them had
- 34:25Speaker 5: his passion for what he did. I mean, he put
- 34:30Speaker 5: everything he had in. He was super competitive. This was
- 34:36Speaker 5: after a practice one time they had a little dunk
- 34:38Speaker 5: tank and so everybody would sit on that little stool
- 34:46Speaker 5: the way to get dunked, and Drew and some of
- 34:48Speaker 5: the other quarterbacks came over and man, Drew was competitive
- 34:52Speaker 5: with that. He missed it the first time completely, you know,
- 34:58Speaker 5: he missed that big section that hit. But that was
- 35:03Speaker 5: the last time he missed it. He missed it once.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Everything else if you were sitting on there, you got
- 35:09Speaker 5: dunked because he was so upset that he had missed
- 35:16Speaker 5: it the first time, and after that, if you were
- 35:20Speaker 5: sitting up there, you were getting with He was not
- 35:25Speaker 5: gonna he was not gonna miss it, and so he
- 35:29Speaker 5: you know, that was him. He was super passionate about
- 35:33Speaker 5: it and he was listen. I think the one thing
- 35:37Speaker 5: that gets overlooked is how talented an athlete he is.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Right he he was. He's a tremendous athlete. Plays pickleball today,
- 35:46Speaker 5: plays left handed because he can't really lift his right
- 35:50Speaker 5: his right arm up anymore. So he learned how to
- 35:53Speaker 5: play golf and pickleball and over his left hand, which
- 35:57Speaker 5: is just amazing. But it goes too uh. You know
- 36:01Speaker 5: how Drew Brees is as a competitor, and there's nothing
- 36:07Speaker 5: you know, if you challenge him, you you in for
- 36:10Speaker 5: quite a battle. You might beat him, but you in
- 36:14Speaker 5: for quite a battle to do it. And that and
- 36:17Speaker 5: I think he takes that now into being a businessman
- 36:22Speaker 5: that you know, he's competitive out there and and he
- 36:25Speaker 5: you know, he's involved in so many things locally here
- 36:28Speaker 5: and also out in California. But I would say his
- 36:33Speaker 5: passion for the game is the one thing that drives
- 36:36Speaker 5: him because you know what, all his life people told
- 36:38Speaker 5: him you're not big enough. That's right, and it sticks
- 36:42Speaker 5: in his head. It's a great tennis player. He's a
- 36:45Speaker 5: really good golfer. He taught you know, he talked to
- 36:50Speaker 5: us last year about this for quite some time. We
- 36:53Speaker 5: did a show at Manning's Children's Hospital and aren't you
- 37:00Speaker 5: recalled him giving Drew an award as the best quarterback
- 37:05Speaker 5: in the state of Texas. And Drew started to go
- 37:09Speaker 5: off on the fact he grew up a Texas Aggie fan.
- 37:12Speaker 5: He wanted to play for Texas A and M. They
- 37:15Speaker 5: never offered him. Same thing at University of Texas, never
- 37:21Speaker 5: offered him. And I think you if you listened, you
- 37:26Speaker 5: can almost hear that I'm gonna show you. I'm gonna
- 37:31Speaker 5: show you just how good I am. And he did
- 37:34Speaker 5: go to Purdue, and he says, now it was you know,
- 37:37Speaker 5: it's the best thing to happen. I tell her day
- 37:39Speaker 5: Bear all the time. Okay, he was a one year
- 37:41Speaker 5: quarterback in high school and he wanted to go to LSU.
- 37:45Speaker 5: His dad a huge LSUE fan, and he wanted to
- 37:48Speaker 5: go to LSU to play. LSU never offered him. He
- 37:51Speaker 5: was the last scholarship given to Northwestern State and Louisiana.
- 37:55Speaker 5: He went there and he got mentored by Joe Ferguson,
- 37:59Speaker 5: former art Way in the NFL for years with Buffalo.
- 38:03Speaker 5: That would have never happened had he went to LSU.
- 38:07Speaker 5: And sometimes God put you in the right place, right time,
- 38:11Speaker 5: and for Drew, he was right place, right time to
- 38:14Speaker 5: go to Purdue. They threw the football a tremendous amount
- 38:19Speaker 5: and it honed his craft as a as a passer.
- 38:24Speaker 5: And you know then the other things that happened with
- 38:27Speaker 5: the shoulder injury, and you know that they had to
- 38:30Speaker 5: make the decision. And he knew politically when you look
- 38:35Speaker 5: at it, that when you picked Philip Rivers as high
- 38:37Speaker 5: as they did, and you know you weren't gonna stay,
- 38:41Speaker 5: you were going to have to go somewhere else. And
- 38:44Speaker 5: the fact that Miami's doctors Randy Mullers told us the
- 38:49Speaker 5: story numerous times. He was there. He was the GM
- 38:52Speaker 5: for Nick Saban. Randy's a consultant now with the Saints,
- 38:56Speaker 5: but wasn't far a GM there with the Saints, and
- 39:00Speaker 5: he talked about, you know, doctor Stolehm, we can't guarantee anything,
- 39:06Speaker 5: and so they made the decision to sort of move
- 39:10Speaker 5: on and that that that changed the course of teams dramatically,
- 39:17Speaker 5: the Dolphins, and then certainly changed the team with the Saints,
- 39:21Speaker 5: and then what he did for University of Alabama, what
- 39:27Speaker 5: what happened there sort of change the outlook all the
- 39:30Speaker 5: way across the board, so you know, kind of the
- 39:34Speaker 5: one domino hit the next domino to get you out.
- 39:38Speaker 5: But you know, Drew again, his impact on this team.
- 39:43Speaker 5: He's there. There probably were players that were you know,
- 39:47Speaker 5: from a talent standpoint, as talented is Drew, but the
- 39:51Speaker 5: impact he had for this community, this team, Uh, I'm
- 39:56Speaker 5: not going to live long enough to see another one.
- 39:58Speaker 1: Like him neither.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Wow, that was that was incredible right there, over twenty
- 40:05Speaker 2: minutes on Drew Brees' first ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer,
- 40:12Speaker 2: Super Bowl Lombardi Trophy winner for New Orleans and as Mike,
- 40:17Speaker 2: I've asked Mike this before, he is the number one
- 40:20Speaker 2: dude in Norland, Saints history and Louisiana. And that's counting
- 40:24Speaker 2: a bunch of unbelievable players in both the Saints and LSU.
- 40:28Speaker 2: But he's he's the number one dude. And man, there's
- 40:31Speaker 2: gonna be a lot of tears in a good way
- 40:36Speaker 2: on August eighth, as people watch Sean Payton introduce him
- 40:40Speaker 2: and Drew talk about his journey.
- 40:44Speaker 5: To Yeah, it's okay. Everybody's journey is different. In the
- 40:49Speaker 5: NFL that you know, there's so many great stories. But
- 40:53Speaker 5: you know, people say, you know, what's the one thing
- 40:56Speaker 5: you take away from Drew and what he did for
- 40:58Speaker 5: the city, in the community, for the who that nations
- 41:02Speaker 5: all great, But if you really want to see what
- 41:05Speaker 5: type of impact he is, walk with him for a
- 41:08Speaker 5: little while somewhere I can't imagine, and you and you
- 41:12Speaker 5: feel like a cheap watch to stop every few seconds,
- 41:21Speaker 5: you can't take two steps, and then you you know
- 41:24Speaker 5: somebody's stopping taking a picture of autograph and all that.
- 41:28Speaker 5: And he's he's so good about, you know, doing all
- 41:31Speaker 5: those things and especially with kids and all he you know,
- 41:35Speaker 5: and uh, you know, and I think he's an inspiration
- 41:38Speaker 5: that you don't have to be that six foot four,
- 41:42Speaker 5: two hundred no doubt quarterback.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Mike D. That was awesome. You crushed it. Thank you
- 41:50Speaker 2: so much. We may do two or three more hits
- 41:53Speaker 2: on Drew Brees before August eighth. Have a great week,
- 41:56Speaker 2: my man. Thank you, Mike D.
- 41:58Speaker 5: Thank you appreciate it.
- 42:00Speaker 2: That might detilier on Twitter. Was that good or what?
- 42:03Speaker 2: Twenty three minutes on the first ballot Pro Football Hall
- 42:07Speaker 2: of Famer number nine, to you, Drew Brees.
