Life First. Then Business. Here's What That Actually Means For Solopreneurs. · The Life-First Solopreneur

Carly Ries: Nearly 300 episodes in and the conversations that land the hardest all come back to the same thing. Life first, then business. Starting today, that's the lens for everything we do on the show, and we want to tell you why. You're listening to The Aspiring Solopreneur, the podcast for those in pursuit of a life first business. I'm Carly Ries, and my cohost, Joe Rando, and I spend every episode with solopreneurs who are proving there's a better way to run a one person business and experts who are helping make it happen.

We like to say life first in business. So let's get right to it. So Joe, we are coming up on 300 episodes of this show, which is crazy to me. I think we've had a few re releases, but that's a lot of conversations with people, a lot of conversations with each other.
• 0:51
And over that time, we've talked to hundreds of Solopreneurs, which is again crazy to say about every topic you can imagine. Pricing, marketing, productivity, you name it. But I think we've both noticed that the conversations that really land are the ones where people reach out after and say, man, that one hit differently. And they all circle back to that same thing. So I'm gonna tee it up for you.
• 1:13
  What is that same thing?
• 1:14
Joe Rando: Building a life first business? Is that the right answer?
• 1:18
Carly Ries: That's the right answer.
• 1:19
Joe Rando: I knew that. Yeah, I mean, that's what this is about. I know I always say, why else be a solopreneur if you don't want a life first business? Because if you want a big business, employees are great.
• 1:33
Carly Ries: Absolutely. And that's what I want this episode to be about. We're actually going to pivot our show strategy from here on out. Actually put a name on it.
• 1:43
We're drawing the line in the sand, and we're saying this is the new lens, and it's life first then business. So Joe, let's kind of elaborate on this life first business, this life first movement, especially as it relates to solopreneurs. Can you kick us off there?
• 1:58
Joe Rando: Absolutely. So one of the things that we've seen over the last few years, and we've been doing this for a few years now. More than a few, I think it's coming up on four ish or five ish. And one of the things we see over and over again is that when people decide to start to go solo, they leave corporate or something else and they decide they're gonna go solo. And the first thing they do, which sounds really smart, is they start with, what am I good at? What are my skills? What can I sell?
• 2:29
And that's really important that you have those things and understand them and figure them out. But it really isn't the best starting point specifically when you're doing something like solopreneurship. Again, assuming that you're doing it for the reason of wanting a life first business.
• 2:45
And my question is, why do it if you're not looking for life first business? If you wanna scale and become a billionaire, employees are your only path. if you're doing this as a solopreneur, you're doing it, we assume, to have something else be served by your business, some other aspects of your life. So the idea here is instead of starting with your skills and saying, what kind of business can I build for my skills? Start with, what we call step zero and define your goals.
• 3:17
What do you want your life to look like with this business? What do you want this business to give you the freedom to do? What kinds of things are you willing to give up? You know, if you're willing to give up the private jet because you decided to be a solopreneur instead of trying to scale a business with employees, great. But what do you want?
• 3:34
Well, I wanna be at my kids' games whenever they play, or I wanna be able to only work with the kind of people I want to , or do the kind of work I wanna do, or I want to be able to, when the weather's nice, go for a long bike ride. You know, those kinds of things that, you need to kind of define and understand. So as you're defining the business, you're designing that business so that it doesn't conflict with those goals.
• 3:58
Carly Ries: Yeah. And I think the key here is, the word I want to glob onto is design. Because most people don't end up in a business that runs their life on purpose. Like, they have good intentions. It just happens by default.
• 4:12
So you start saying yes to things because revenue is scary to turn down, or you just feel like, yes, man. And then before you know it, you have another job as opposed to a business that you want, except it's worse than a job because there's no paid time off. And you don't have any benefits or anything. Well, Joe, let's talk about why now.
• 4:32
Why after nearly 300 episodes, we've built LifeStarr. We have successful events every month with a bunch of Solopreneurs. Why now? And again, we're still targeting aspiring Solopreneurs, people who are in the pursuit of this life first business. But do you wanna dive into why we've decided to take this direction?
• 4:52
Joe Rando: Well, yeah, I think we've always, in some ways, been going in this direction, Carly. I mean, we've talked about this idea of, the Solopreneur Success Cycle was something where we started with step zero of defining your life and goals. So in some ways, this is not anything new, but what we've realized is that, first of all, we're not alone in this. There are other people and other groups of people that are trying to achieve this or help people achieve this. And the fact is that with what's happening now with AI, there are a couple of factors there because number one, people are either getting let go or their job description is changing in a way that isn't satisfactory to them.
• 5:38
And that's forcing some people to think about solopreneurship as another option. But then AI is also empowering solopreneurs to do much more and be able to do the kinds of things that they need to do to have a successful life first business, because the technology's really become that powerful. So it's kind of those, the AI double edged sword is driving a lot of this. I think people in general are just seeing that serving the corporate gods isn't necessarily a fulfilling life, and there are people that are just making this kind of shift because they realize they have one life to live, and they wanna live it on their own terms. So that's some of it.
• 6:17
Do you have any thoughts on that?
• 6:19
Carly Ries: No. Not at all. But I do want to be clear what this new approach is not. Can I talk about some of that? As you're talking about the why now, because I can already see the eye rolls and like, oh, this seems fluffy.
• 6:34
Life first does not mean lazy. It doesn't mean anti growth. It doesn't mean you're working ten hours a week on a beach and posting Instagram stories randomly for that passive income. As lovely as that sounds, that is not what we are targeting. We're talking about a lifeless solopreneur who generally wants to build a business but with purpose, with intent, with design, and everything we're talking about.
• 6:57
So again, this is not turning into a get rich quick scheme so that you could just live your life and not work. It's just have you run a business that supports your life and not the other way around or not a business that owns your life.
• 7:08
Joe Rando: Absolutely. as I alluded to earlier, there are trade offs. You are making trade offs. You know, if you really need a million dollars a year, maybe you can do that and have all the time and freedom you want. If you can, great.
• 7:23
Most people that's not gonna be the case. They're gonna be working a lot. And that's fine if that's what your life first goals are. But for most people, it's going to be some aspect of freedom, of some kind, right? And different kinds of freedom.
• 7:39
So yeah, it's one of those things where we're not trying to say you can have it all. We're saying that you can very consciously choose the trade offs to get the things that are important to you and give up the things that are less so.
• 7:52
  Carly Ries: Absolutely.
• 7:52
Joe Rando: I know that isn't as sexy as, hey, work four hours a week and make, $50,000 a month. But I don't know of many people that have pulled that off.
• 8:01
Carly Ries: Yeah. I agree. Well, So listeners, we just wanna say going forward, this is the lens we'll be looking at everything through, every guest, every topic, every conversation. We're looking at it through life first solopreneurship, life first business.
• 8:15
And that doesn't mean we're never gonna talk about marketing or pricing or AI because that's important for this type of business. But the question we're always going to be addressing is how does this serve the life you're building? Not how does it help you work harder, have that hustle and bro mentality. But, yeah. We're just excited to announce this.
• 8:36
This is the first time we're saying it out loud explicitly. I think it's gonna be great.
• 8:40
Joe Rando: And if you happen to be somebody that's out there helping other solopreneurs build life first businesses, get in touch. We wanna hear from you. We wanna team up. We wanna work with you. This is not about LifeStarr alone.
• 8:53
This is a movement bigger than us, and we wanna team up with you folks that are out trying to achieve the same goal for people.
• 9:01
Carly Ries: Absolutely. We're excited. So like Joe said, keep us posted, but also share this episode with a friend. If you know of another person that is trying to create a life first business, share it on your socials.
