- 0:01Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, we'll see if we can locate Jeff
- 0:13Speaker 1: Legwald here. Oh, we got Jeff. Well, then let's go
- 0:17Speaker 1: out to the Ramos Law hotline car Accident you need
- 0:19Speaker 1: Ramos Law medical doctor and attorney ramos Law dot com.
- 0:22Speaker 1: And we're joined as we are every week by Jeff
- 0:25Speaker 1: legwaldt ESPN dot com.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Hi, Legy, good morning Fallas you know, we were just
- 0:28Speaker 2: playing a little funk music coming back. If I could
- 0:31Speaker 2: think of one human on the planet who would be
- 0:33Speaker 2: the most opposite of funk, I look at Jeff Legwald
- 0:38Speaker 2: and that's not a Pejordan. That's not that's not bad.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It's just that forever ying, there has to be a Yang.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So for every killer funk tune, there has to be
- 0:45Speaker 2: a Leggy.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I love the funk, don't ever forget it? Do you really?
- 0:51Speaker 3: I love that?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Are you a parliament guy like George Clinton?
- 0:54Speaker 3: Way back? Yeah? George Clinton?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm so good. Hey, Jeff, what do you make
- 1:01Speaker 2: of Sean Payton? Well, I guess this is a silly question,
- 1:04Speaker 2: getting defensive when people asked about maybe the lack of
- 1:10Speaker 2: movement or excitement in the Broncos.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Let's play it for those who didn't hear it because
- 1:15Speaker 1: this is He was asked a question about running it back.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Here was his response.
- 1:18Speaker 4: I saw the stories, all right, and I don't believe them,
- 1:23Speaker 4: and so it's not let's run it back. I hate
- 1:26Speaker 4: that term. All right, it's not let's run it back.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Let's understand one thing. It's anything but that when you
- 1:33Speaker 4: win eleven to thirteen one score games like you saw
- 1:36Speaker 4: the flip in just one season between Kansas City, it's
- 1:40Speaker 4: how do you improve your team? And the better you get,
- 1:45Speaker 4: the harder it is to improve your team. And so
- 1:50Speaker 4: you just weren't patient enough for us to trade for Wattle.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Your stories had been written.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So the Wattle trade, albeit a huge trade, but one
- 2:00Speaker 1: acquisition is kind of running it back, is it not?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Wait now we don't hear leg There we go.
- 2:08Speaker 5: No, He's made no secret that he doesn't think you
- 2:12Speaker 5: start the next season where you left off. You know,
- 2:15Speaker 5: he says that all the time. So that says, like
- 2:18Speaker 5: one of his philosophical principles. You know, every year is
- 2:23Speaker 5: a new year, even if he had the same fifty
- 2:26Speaker 5: three guys, which they almost do, but he would say
- 2:30Speaker 5: it's not the same just because of that's how he
- 2:33Speaker 5: approaches things. But I would also say internally, the Broncos
- 2:39Speaker 5: think they're not getting any credit for spending like three
- 2:42Speaker 5: hundred million dollars of guaranteed money to keep their own guys.
- 2:48Speaker 5: You know, like if they had let Zach Allen go
- 2:50Speaker 5: and Nick Benito go, you know, you'd be getting new acquisitions.
- 2:55Speaker 5: But in their mind, that's kind of an acquisition you maintained.
- 3:01Speaker 3: A player you like and believe is really good.
- 3:04Speaker 5: But you know, they can't hide from the fact that
- 3:07Speaker 5: they signed one outside free agent and he's a special
- 3:10Speaker 5: teams player essentially. And the Lottel trades the biggest trade
- 3:15Speaker 5: anybody made, you know, other than the Max Crosby one
- 3:18Speaker 5: that didn't go through, but it's it's one of the
- 3:21Speaker 5: biggest trades anybody's made in the off season. But it's
- 3:25Speaker 5: not at what people even what he has said, at
- 3:28Speaker 5: a need position. So that's I think that's the issue.
- 3:32Speaker 5: But he hates running it back. He hates he hates
- 3:36Speaker 5: when you say, you know, you start this season where
- 3:39Speaker 5: he left off, like he went to the AFC Championship game,
- 3:43Speaker 5: so you sort of start there you're a Super Bowl contender.
- 3:46Speaker 3: That's not how his brain functions.
- 3:49Speaker 1: But is it fair for me to say that me
- 3:53Speaker 1: still being married to my wife for another year, that
- 3:55Speaker 1: we ran it back this year isn't.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Yeah, he may hate the phrase, but you know, I
- 4:02Speaker 5: you know, it's like me saying, you know, my height
- 4:04Speaker 5: is my height.
- 4:05Speaker 3: I can say I'm disappointed, but it is. It is
- 4:08Speaker 3: a fact.
- 4:09Speaker 6: He also was like talking about humps. Those are those
- 4:11Speaker 6: are things he doesn't It's.
- 4:13Speaker 5: No, he doesn't like you don't like humps. Other people's history.
- 4:18Speaker 5: You know, there's a lot of there's a lot on
- 4:19Speaker 5: the list, but Jeffrey run it, run It back is
- 4:22Speaker 5: pretty high on the list.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I will say.
- 4:24Speaker 6: He did mention that Jonah Ellis is going to see
- 4:26Speaker 6: some work at inside back or what do you think
- 4:28Speaker 6: that'll look like.
- 4:30Speaker 5: I'll be intrigued to see how many snaps we're talking
- 4:32Speaker 5: because they, you know, are they looking to have somebody
- 4:36Speaker 5: alternate with Sternod, Where's Drew Sanders and all this? You know,
- 4:41Speaker 5: because they Sanders they designated the return right before the
- 4:44Speaker 5: playoffs or during the playoffs, so uh, you know, I
- 4:50Speaker 5: think they just want to see of ways to get
- 4:53Speaker 5: Alice on the field more. I think this says more
- 4:56Speaker 5: about them wanting to play him more and there's just
- 5:00Speaker 5: no you know, Benito and Cooper are your edge guys,
- 5:05Speaker 5: you know, your top edge guys, and it's hard to
- 5:07Speaker 5: get him on the field, and he has impact when
- 5:10Speaker 5: he's on the field. So I think this is a
- 5:13Speaker 5: situational thing, at least until we see him in drills.
- 5:17Speaker 3: But I think right now this is a situational thing.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah, how long do you think they give it, Jeff,
- 5:22Speaker 2: until they determine it's a success or it's not going
- 5:26Speaker 2: to work. Is it we're talking training camp here or
- 5:28Speaker 2: are we talking preseason? What are we looking at?
- 5:32Speaker 3: Yeah? I think they'd like to see emotion and snaps
- 5:35Speaker 3: that matter.
- 5:35Speaker 5: You know, it's hard to make those calls and OTAs
- 5:39Speaker 5: and stuff. But I don't you know, sometimes when you
- 5:43Speaker 5: start moving a player around, it's sort of a detriment,
- 5:47Speaker 5: you know that they can't find.
- 5:48Speaker 3: A place for him.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Or I think this is more they want him on
- 5:53Speaker 5: the field in some fashion. Can they do it better
- 5:57Speaker 5: this way? And frankly, the way the game is going now,
- 6:01Speaker 5: the edge off ball linebacker combo is a little bit
- 6:06Speaker 5: more common. You know, even this draft class has has
- 6:11Speaker 5: you know, some of the top players have that combination
- 6:14Speaker 5: of work. So I think this is where the game's going.
- 6:17Speaker 5: And I think, unless I just totally blow it in
- 6:22Speaker 5: thinking about it, I think this could get him more
- 6:24Speaker 5: snaps and it won't be a detriment to him as
- 6:28Speaker 5: a player because it is a skill set he has.
- 6:31Speaker 5: They just chose to play him at edge, you know,
- 6:35Speaker 5: full time when he came in.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Jeff Leagwall. All conversations with leg You're brought to you
- 6:39Speaker 1: by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty
- 6:43Speaker 1: eight start with the job and with the career. That
- 6:46Speaker 1: brings me to another mystery. Speaking of linebackers, what's Drew Sanders?
- 6:52Speaker 3: What's that guy?
- 6:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the injuries have really derailed a career.
- 6:58Speaker 5: I mean it's it's you don't often when he came
- 7:01Speaker 5: into the draft, you don't often see you know, one
- 7:05Speaker 5: hundred tackle guys in the SEC that had that many sacks.
- 7:09Speaker 5: You're talking about one of the most productive players in
- 7:13Speaker 5: the draft. He was in uh and then the injuries
- 7:17Speaker 5: have just crushing and they've tried him everywhere and he
- 7:20Speaker 5: really hasn't been healthy enough to see if any of
- 7:24Speaker 5: these spots.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Are going to work. And this this you know, sort
- 7:27Speaker 3: of mini revelation. I had.
- 7:29Speaker 5: I had heard at the end of the season they
- 7:31Speaker 5: were trying to think of ways to get Ellis more involved.
- 7:34Speaker 5: They didn't know if that would be inside linebacker at
- 7:37Speaker 5: that time, but uh, it does say something that they're
- 7:41Speaker 5: going to do this with Ellis. Was Sanders still around
- 7:43Speaker 5: and again they they elevated Sanders to designated to return
- 7:48Speaker 5: right before the end of the season, so he was
- 7:51Speaker 5: obviously getting healthy. So maybe they got to look at
- 7:54Speaker 5: him then and and but I want to see what
- 7:57Speaker 5: the rotation is when they finally get on the field.
- 8:00Speaker 5: They'll be the latest team on the field for team
- 8:04Speaker 5: drills in the off season this year, it's just Sean's prerogative.
- 8:09Speaker 5: They're just gonna wait and do OTA's and mini camp
- 8:14Speaker 5: all in June. I'm not sure I've seen that in
- 8:17Speaker 5: this current the current schedule.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Elsewhere in the AFC West.
- 8:23Speaker 2: We had to debate the other day.
- 8:25Speaker 6: I like the fact that the Raiders went after Kirk
- 8:28Speaker 6: Cousins and provided some mentorship for Fernando Mendoz and I
- 8:32Speaker 6: don't mind Fernando having to sit a few games. Our
- 8:34Speaker 6: boy Brett there disagrees. He thinks that the rookie should
- 8:37Speaker 6: play right away. Where do you fall on that one.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Well, I I will say where John Spytech falls the GM.
- 8:45Speaker 5: He he has already said I've spoken to him, you
- 8:49Speaker 5: know about QB's and he is he has said he
- 8:53Speaker 5: doesn't think it's a bad idea for a guy to
- 8:57Speaker 5: come in and sit a little bit. I think when
- 8:59Speaker 5: you have the number one pick and you're betting so
- 9:02Speaker 5: much on this player to bring you back, I would
- 9:06Speaker 5: guess they're gonna they're gonna take it a little slower.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Now.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Do I think Mendoza is sitting out his rookie year,
- 9:12Speaker 5: No way, But I do think they will take it
- 9:16Speaker 5: a little slower.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Along the way.
- 9:20Speaker 5: You know, and Clint Clint's a really good quarterback coach,
- 9:24Speaker 5: a really good offensive coach. So for if Mendoza blows
- 9:28Speaker 5: them away in training camp and all of that, you
- 9:31Speaker 5: could see the you know, the move right away. But
- 9:34Speaker 5: they they have said they're gonna structure it to go
- 9:38Speaker 5: a little slower, and you know, I think with the
- 9:41Speaker 5: flame out rate as it is, I don't necessarily think
- 9:45Speaker 5: that's a bad idea. You know, they spend a lot
- 9:49Speaker 5: of money on a center, which was a really good
- 9:51Speaker 5: move when you're gonna have a young quarterback and Cousins
- 9:55Speaker 5: uh and all the people I've known who have dealt
- 9:58Speaker 5: with him say he is a good sounding board for
- 10:02Speaker 5: young quarterbacks. This isn't a veteran guy who's going to
- 10:06Speaker 5: sort of, you know, do the whole cold shoulder thing
- 10:09Speaker 5: on the young quarterback who I mean. Cousins comes into
- 10:12Speaker 5: this with no doubt who the quarterback of the Raiders
- 10:16Speaker 5: is going to be long term moving forward. So it
- 10:20Speaker 5: is another epic win for his agent. Though he is
- 10:24Speaker 5: the king of guaranteed money.
- 10:25Speaker 2: This guy's unbelievable.
- 10:27Speaker 5: We should all hire that guy, McCartney. He just he
- 10:31Speaker 5: makes it happen.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Hey, Jeff, I talk about this from a Broncos perspective.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I guess Mendoza's pro day was really really good, Like
- 10:39Speaker 2: he's looking like the incredible real deal. When do we
- 10:43Speaker 2: start worrying about him and the Raiders? Is it you're
- 10:46Speaker 2: down the line five years? I mean, what's the time
- 10:48Speaker 2: frame here in your opinion?
- 10:51Speaker 5: Well, I think that they have the look of somebody
- 10:54Speaker 5: taking a little slower and steady. They've been real hurky jerky,
- 11:00Speaker 5: you know, the owner especially hasn't been able to hang
- 11:04Speaker 5: in very long on any plan.
- 11:06Speaker 3: So I think.
- 11:08Speaker 5: You know, I think as far as team building, I
- 11:11Speaker 5: don't think any of us are really sure what the
- 11:13Speaker 5: Tom Brady influence is on all this. I mean, you hear,
- 11:19Speaker 5: you know, I've heard the same gossip around a lot
- 11:21Speaker 5: of people have is you know, Brady's right hand guy
- 11:24Speaker 5: isn't a popular guy in the facility, that type of thing.
- 11:29Speaker 5: So I think a lot of those elements dictate how
- 11:34Speaker 5: good you're going to be on the field. But if
- 11:37Speaker 5: Mendoza works out, I mean, you know, bo Nix has
- 11:40Speaker 5: had a pretty good impact on how the Broncos have
- 11:42Speaker 5: done their business. If Mendoza has a similar impact, then
- 11:47Speaker 5: the division is suddenly a lot more rugged than it
- 11:52Speaker 5: was because, you know, past few years, even though the
- 11:55Speaker 5: Broncos couldn't win in Vegas, but the past few years
- 11:58Speaker 5: that's not been the case.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Who's more concerned about the idea of replacement refs? Is
- 12:03Speaker 1: it the players or is it the actual NFL?
- 12:06Speaker 3: I think, right, I think both guides are concerned.
- 12:09Speaker 5: The NFL won't give it up because it's a negotiation
- 12:12Speaker 5: right now, but nobody wants substitute refs. And I think, honestly,
- 12:18Speaker 5: if the more the players are vocal about it, the
- 12:21Speaker 5: better chance there is of a deal getting done because
- 12:26Speaker 5: I've said all along, the players union should make that
- 12:29Speaker 5: a huge thing.
- 12:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:31Speaker 6: Text me up though, Jeff, that the players players are
- 12:34Speaker 6: talking about, Oh, we need the professional refs, and yet
- 12:38Speaker 6: every player is bitching about the refs come football season.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the That's.
- 12:42Speaker 5: The funniest thing that you know your allies at different
- 12:45Speaker 5: times in life. It's a little odd, but yeah, if
- 12:49Speaker 5: you ask them in November, they would have said, we
- 12:51Speaker 5: don't want any of these guys.
- 12:52Speaker 3: But right now they want them all.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but they want I guess they want five hundred g's. Ye.
- 12:59Speaker 2: That's a lot of money, man, a lot of money.
- 13:03Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:04Speaker 5: It's uh, you know, you get negotiation what you can negotiate, right,
- 13:09Speaker 5: I mean, that's the If you could get that, then
- 13:12Speaker 5: that's that's the market value. Obviously that as long as
- 13:16Speaker 5: I've been covering the league, the team owners have fought
- 13:19Speaker 5: full time refs.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Uh.
- 13:22Speaker 5: They have dragged their feet on this for you know,
- 13:24Speaker 5: I've been doing this a lot of years and they've
- 13:27Speaker 5: dragged their feet on full time refs for as long
- 13:30Speaker 5: as I can remember. And you know, an awful lot
- 13:33Speaker 5: of people I know think that is the solution.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Just quickly on that, you know, the the idea of
- 13:38Speaker 1: the They passed that rule for one year only the
- 13:41Speaker 1: NFL is allowed to correct clear and obvious missed calls.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Why would that just be for this year? If something
- 13:48Speaker 1: is clear and obvious, wouldn't you want that changed anyway?
- 13:53Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 13:53Speaker 5: I think this is more of a negotiating tactic. Yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 5: they want to see how this is received. And I
- 14:01Speaker 5: think some people are uncomfortable for you know, a lot
- 14:05Speaker 5: of reasons with one sort of faceless entity being in
- 14:10Speaker 5: charge of all the calls, you know, in all the games.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Uh.
- 14:14Speaker 5: You know, to me, if you're gonna do it, you
- 14:16Speaker 5: better be putting a camera up so people can watch
- 14:18Speaker 5: you doing it totally.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Uh.
- 14:20Speaker 5: If you're gonna have this much involvement with gambling and
- 14:23Speaker 5: all the rest of it, you better make sure you
- 14:27Speaker 5: know none of your officiating decisions are made, you know,
- 14:30Speaker 5: by this nameless people in a room somewhere that nobody
- 14:34Speaker 5: sees or nobody understands how they do their job.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Do you like the abs thing going on in the
- 14:38Speaker 1: MLB right now?
- 14:41Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:41Speaker 5: I I do, because that seems more finite than a
- 14:45Speaker 5: lot of NFL calls.
- 14:46Speaker 3: And you could put the you know, it's like tennis.
- 14:49Speaker 5: You know, I don't think there are many many tournaments
- 14:51Speaker 5: with actual human beings calling the lines anymore. I think
- 14:55Speaker 5: there might only be like one or two. Uh, that's
- 14:58Speaker 5: totally electronic. That's very finite space. You know, You're you're
- 15:03Speaker 5: dealing with inside the line or outside the line, and
- 15:06Speaker 5: that's it. There's there are some calls in the NFL
- 15:10Speaker 5: that are like that, but an awful lot or not,
- 15:12Speaker 5: you know, holding and all the rest.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Of it is p I. I mean, that's I'm.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Not sure you can always you know, there's any way
- 15:19Speaker 5: to fully automate that. But I know some umpires are
- 15:23Speaker 5: not happy with AVS right now because it's it's making
- 15:26Speaker 5: them look bad.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Hey, Junaro Gatuso is out as coach of Team Miday.
- 15:31Speaker 2: What do you think about the Italians missing out of
- 15:33Speaker 2: the World Cup yet again?
- 15:35Speaker 3: Oh? I know, I know Vick is upset by that.
- 15:37Speaker 3: What do you say?
- 15:39Speaker 1: Waits Victum said about it, I didn't notice.
- 15:41Speaker 2: I didn't really notice at all. No, I barely noticed.
- 15:45Speaker 6: I'm not I'm not gonna apologize for being the only
- 15:47Speaker 6: man on the show with not doing it.
- 15:51Speaker 3: You know, I will say I don't know much about soccer,
- 15:53Speaker 3: but that is fairly shocking. They'd be like the Yankees.
- 15:57Speaker 3: You know, it's taken last three years in a row
- 15:59Speaker 3: or something.
- 16:00Speaker 6: Let me tell you what it's like, because for people
- 16:01Speaker 6: that don't understand how this hits, it would be like Duke,
- 16:05Speaker 6: it would be like Arizona. It would be like one
- 16:08Speaker 6: of these superpowers in basketball not making the NCAA tournament
- 16:12Speaker 6: for twelve years straight. That's what it's like.
- 16:15Speaker 3: That's what it's like because they've won the fight.
- 16:19Speaker 5: Yeah, there you go, that's what we want. Well, I
- 16:24Speaker 5: feel the passion.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Mack. You can't. You can't keep that inside. That's bad
- 16:27Speaker 3: for you.
- 16:28Speaker 1: You just got a taste of it. That was forty
- 16:29Speaker 1: eight straight hours for us. Let you're the best, always
- 16:32Speaker 1: left talking to you. Have a good weekend.
- 16:34Speaker 3: They have bouth
