- 0:05SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Karen Ferguson, wife, mom, grandmom, and children's book author with a background in K-8 education and a passion for equipping parents to raise competent and God-confident kids.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: In this podcast, we'll cover parenting practices from both a practical view and a biblical view.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Our goal is to help you raise kids with a positive, godly self-image so they can become all they were created to be.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: I know you're busy, so we'll keep it short.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Let's take just five minutes and dive in.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Can you guess the most popular Christmas song in the world?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: If you guessed Silent Night, you'd be right.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Silent Night has over 100 translations and holds the Guinness World Record for being the most recorded Christmas song in history.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Also, according to Guinness Book of World Records, White Christmas by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Well, that's just a little Christmas song trivia for you to start out today.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: But there is no doubt music is powerful.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: It brings us joy and comfort.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It evokes strong emotions and transports us back in time.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It can either energize us or relax us.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: In fact, more studies are coming out about the transformative power of music and its ability to move people and improve our mental and emotional and even physical well-being.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: This is why I encourage parents and grandparents to be involved in their children's choices of music.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: You know, it's okay to know the songs your kids are listening to and question where they come from.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Who is the artist?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: What are their values and lifestyle?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: If these songs are not coming from the right place, then our children could be influenced by the wrong person and captivated by the wrong spirit.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Here are some fun facts to know about the power of music.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Research shows there's a link between music and our mood.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Listening to your favorite song releases dopamine into the brain that'll make you feel good and can help in preventing depression.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Certain types of music help improve focus and attention and even boost mental performance, which means there's also certain types of music that can keep us distracted.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Classical music in particular is known to bring about a calm, stable state of mind and improve learning efficiency.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Some music promotes relaxation, others boost energy.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And music cultivates connection.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: It's universal in that it brings people together.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter matter what language you speak or where you're from.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: The language of music we all can understand.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: It creates a sense of togetherness among people from all walks of life, at concerts, places of worship, and celebrations.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: This is why, as gatekeepers of our home, I believe it's so important to know what our kids are listening to and to have some conversations with them about the type of lyrics they're listening to, the current music culture, and why it's so important to feed on music that's good for our brains, bodies, and spirits.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: The ability of music to cultivate connections is also why I love Christmas music so much.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: It just brings people together in a way like no other.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Even those in the church who can't seem to agree on whether or not the music is too loud, too soft, too contemporary, or too much like the culture come together to enjoy the beauty and spirit of Christmas music.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And the familiarity of so many beloved Christmas songs makes it a season where most everyone will sing.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Even the ones who usually say they can't.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: So sing and sing some more with your family this year and throughout the year.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I've listed my top 10 Christmas songs in the show notes, so be sure to check that out because you might find something new to add to your playlist.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Well, I want to close today by reading the lyrics of one of the most beloved Christmas songs, Joy to the World.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: This song is rich in theology and bubbling over with joy because our Savior has come.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Joy to the world, the Lord is come, let Earth receive her king, let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Joy to the world, the Savior reigns, let men their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: He comes to make his blessings flow, far as the curse is found.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: He rules with the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Merry Christmas.
