- 0:00What is going on, everybody?
- 0:0124.3 scores are being added
- 0:05to the leaderboard as we speak,
- 0:07and something interesting has happened.
- 0:10The six-time champ posted a
- 0:12score that is not
- 0:14indicative of her fitness
- 0:17or her capacity.
- 0:18What is going on?
- 0:21Welcome back to Scott Riffs.
- 0:26Where has CrossFit missed the mark?
- 0:32And I want you to listen
- 0:33closely because she does
- 0:35something very tricky here
- 0:37that really pissed me off.
- 0:42You are not presenting accurate facts.
- 0:44You are manipulating what
- 0:46you're presenting to suck
- 0:48people into your narrative.
- 0:53CrossFit takes notes or gets
- 0:55out of the way.
- 0:56One or the other,
- 0:57because this train's moving
- 0:59forward because of people like you.
- 1:03I'm too much of an alpha at
- 1:04times to want to conform too much.
- 1:12And I would rather be all of me.
- 1:22What's going on, everybody?
- 1:23We are here for a special
- 1:24edition of Scott Riffs.
- 1:26I was looking at the
- 1:27leaderboard today through
- 1:29the help of my friend Lex,
- 1:32who sent me a heads up.
- 1:34But looking through the leaderboard,
- 1:35I noticed that One Miss
- 1:39Tiatumi posted her scores today for 24.3.
- 1:44So let's go back in the
- 1:45timeline a little bit.
- 1:47Right before the open,
- 1:48she was spotted coaching a
- 1:50class with a brace on her wrist,
- 1:55which then she came out and
- 1:57said that she had suffered
- 2:00some damage by pushing a stroller a lot,
- 2:02like a carpal tunnel type thing,
- 2:03and that just needed some rest,
- 2:07and she was doing the open.
- 2:09does the first two weeks of
- 2:10the open uh nothing nothing
- 2:14alarming at that point and
- 2:15then we get to 24.3 she was
- 2:17supposed to do the open
- 2:19announcement with ariel
- 2:20lowen it then comes out
- 2:22that she is withdrawing
- 2:24from that announcement uh
- 2:26and her statement was that
- 2:27she didn't feel like in the
- 2:29condition she was with her
- 2:30wrist she could give the
- 2:31fans the show that they
- 2:32deserved for an open announcement
- 2:35So she was going to sit this one out.
- 2:37CrossFit pivoted,
- 2:38brought three other
- 2:39athletes in to compete against Ariel,
- 2:42including Sydney Wells, Roman Kronikoff,
- 2:45and Jay Crouch.
- 2:4524.3 goes off without a
- 2:50hitch at Proven
- 2:50Headquarters with tons of
- 2:52people in attendance.
- 2:53Awesome spectacle.
- 2:55We then get the scores from
- 2:58what Tia did this weekend.
- 3:01And she posts a score of
- 3:03seven rounds with a
- 3:05three-minute tie break.
- 3:08meaning she got through the
- 3:1065 pound thrusters and the
- 3:13chest of bars fairly quickly,
- 3:16three minutes, five rounds.
- 3:18And then she only got two
- 3:20more rounds after that,
- 3:22making it less than,
- 3:25or she was three rounds from finishing,
- 3:28not reps, but rounds from finishing 24.3.
- 3:30So my question is,
- 3:36What's going on?
- 3:39Is it a fact of, hey,
- 3:41I don't want to damage this anymore,
- 3:44and I'm just going to stop and rest.
- 3:46This is all I need to make top 25%.
- 3:49Or is something seriously
- 3:51wrong where she is unable
- 3:54to complete those movements
- 3:56currently with the way her
- 3:58wrist is feeling and is
- 4:03whatever shape it's in.
- 4:07Before all the alarm bells sound,
- 4:09she has 30 days before
- 4:10quarterfinals to rest up,
- 4:13to heal the wrist,
- 4:15and to take on the
- 4:16quarterfinals at the end of
- 4:21next month or wherever.
- 4:23We're 30 days away, whatever that is.
- 4:26mid April.
- 4:27So then once she gets to
- 4:29quarterfinals though, that's when the,
- 4:31the eye of the needle
- 4:32shrinks considerably.
- 4:34And if it's, if it's bothering her,
- 4:36she's at risk of not
- 4:38qualifying to semifinals.
- 4:40There's only 40 spots available, um,
- 4:42at the,
- 4:43at the semifinal level and in
- 4:45North America East,
- 4:47it is a juggernaut of a semifinal.
- 4:49There are so many big names.
- 4:52Um,
- 4:53it is going to be a tough
- 4:55road to hold even to get
- 4:56out of that semi-final let
- 4:58alone and to get into it
- 5:00and she is really going to
- 5:02be at a breaking point in
- 5:0330 days so again she has 30
- 5:06days to rest recover get
- 5:07that right but things could
- 5:10go south really quick if
- 5:13that is not um if that is
- 5:17not healed in 30 days
- 5:20The other thing I want to point out is,
- 5:23you know, all offseason,
- 5:25everybody has been
- 5:26anointing her the next
- 5:27champion of the CrossFit
- 5:29Games because she is the six-time champ.
- 5:32She is the greatest
- 5:33CrossFitter we've ever seen in the sport.
- 5:36But sports are sports,
- 5:38and unpredictable things
- 5:41happen all the time.
- 5:44And I made this call out a few,
- 5:46probably a month ago,
- 5:48where everybody was
- 5:49anointing her to be the next champion.
- 5:52And I said, listen,
- 5:54it's been two years since
- 5:55she's been on the competition floor.
- 5:56She's two years older.
- 5:58A lot can happen in those two years.
- 6:01And we don't know how she's
- 6:02going to perform coming back from that.
- 6:07Injuries happen.
- 6:09We're seeing that now.
- 6:11There's a good shot.
- 6:13There's a good chance that
- 6:14she is unable to compete
- 6:16throughout this year,
- 6:17and she may not win the CrossFit Games.
- 6:20And even if she makes it through,
- 6:21if she's not 100% with that wrist,
- 6:27and anybody who's been
- 6:28through injuries...
- 6:30Once you have an injury,
- 6:31you compensate with other
- 6:32things in your body,
- 6:33and then they tend to go in
- 6:35the same fashion.
- 6:38And so we need to be careful
- 6:41in sports about anointing
- 6:42people to the champion
- 6:46before a season even starts.
- 6:51At the end of this,
- 6:51I want the best competition
- 6:53possible at the CrossFit Games.
- 6:55I don't want her to miss
- 6:57this year's CrossFit Games
- 6:59just so I can be right.
- 7:03But I do think we need to be
- 7:05more cautious about our
- 7:06predictions and our
- 7:09absolute predictions about
- 7:11who is going to win and who
- 7:13is not based on past performance.
- 7:16Every year is a different year.
- 7:18Things happen.
- 7:19Unpredictable things happen.
- 7:21And that's where we are now.
- 7:23So if you go out and look at
- 7:25the leaderboard, Tia Toomey,
- 7:27seven rounds for 24.3.
- 7:28Did not finish the workout by...
- 7:33three full rounds so again
- 7:38there's no video with her
- 7:39submission so I don't know
- 7:42why she stopped when she
- 7:44stopped if it was a um a
- 7:47decision that was made um
- 7:49that she stopped at that
- 7:50point and just get on to
- 7:52quarterfinals or if it was
- 7:54something where she just
- 7:55could not go on any further
- 7:57So she did complete 14
- 7:59thrusters and 14 muscle-ups
- 8:02in that second half,
- 8:03but was unable to finish
- 8:05the last three rounds.
- 8:07With that, I'm going to sign off.
- 8:10Hope everybody has a great week.
- 8:12And Tia,
- 8:12I hope you rest up and you're
- 8:14ready for quarters,
- 8:15because sports better when
- 8:17we have the best
- 8:18competition available for everybody.
- 8:21With that, Scott Riffs, out.
