Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB: What Are Any Lingering Roster Concerns For The Eagles?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Is back.
- 0:13Speaker 1: What's going on, everybody? It's Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan. No,
- 0:17Speaker 1: there's no game this weekend. We got that weird extra week,
- 0:19Speaker 1: but it gives Adam and I some time now to
- 0:22Speaker 1: really process the Eagles after the 53, after the practice squad.
- 0:28Speaker 1: There are potentially some moves ahead, but as for now,
- 0:30Speaker 1: we're going to talk about this 53-man roster as it
- 0:33Speaker 1: pertains to going into week one next Sunday against the Commanders, Adam.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And what we're going to do, and I like this episode,
- 0:40Speaker 1: is it's not intended to have a negative slant. But
- 0:42Speaker 1: what we want to do is say, hey, this is
- 0:44Speaker 1: a team that's expecting to compete for a Super Bowl.
- 0:47Speaker 1: The team does. What are any lingering roster concerns that
- 0:50Speaker 1: we have? And it doesn't have to just be personnel.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It could be conceptual. But what are you thinking about
- 0:56Speaker 1: this team? What would hold it back? What questions do
- 1:00Speaker 1: we still have about the Eagles headed into week one
- 1:03Speaker 1: next Sunday? So I like this. And I like that
- 1:06Speaker 1: you and I do this at this time because not
- 1:08Speaker 1: only do we talk about the Eagles a lot, right?
- 1:11Speaker 1: But you talk to everybody around the league. You do
- 1:14Speaker 1: your training camp tours. I've talked to a few people.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I like to get their perspective on what they think
- 1:19Speaker 1: about their team, what they think about the Eagles, where
- 1:22Speaker 1: teams are starting to prioritize. You'll notice paradigm shifts in
- 1:26Speaker 1: what teams start to prioritize year after year, and there's
- 1:30Speaker 1: some cycling going on that I wanted to talk to
- 1:31Speaker 1: you about in this episode. So it's a good time
- 1:33Speaker 1: to do it.
- 1:33Speaker 2: You know, it's funny that you bring that up because–
- 1:37Speaker 2: And something we've talked about for years and it's still
- 1:39Speaker 2: not been answered. Why don't teams prioritize offensive defensive lines
- 1:43Speaker 2: like the Eagles do? Right. You would think like this
- 1:45Speaker 2: is the most common, obvious thing in life. You study
- 1:48Speaker 2: that people are successful and you try to emulate what
- 1:51Speaker 2: they do. Like, why are they good at certain things? Well,
- 1:53Speaker 2: this is what they, this is how they prioritize. Right.
- 1:56Speaker 2: And I just don't understand it. And yeah, I mean,
- 2:00Speaker 2: they've had some down years. 2020 was their last down year.
- 2:03Speaker 2: That was six years ago. Okay. Okay. That's saying something.
- 2:06Speaker 2: When you could turn things around like how he's done,
- 2:09Speaker 2: like he had to take stock of where he failed.
- 2:12Speaker 2: He built a better culture, better players, not only better talent,
- 2:16Speaker 2: but better people. And a lot of good things around them.
- 2:20Speaker 2: But the thing that has not changed, and Joe Banner
- 2:22Speaker 2: brought this in with Jeffrey Lurie, in 1994, Joe told
- 2:26Speaker 2: us many times when we've spoken to him that they
- 2:29Speaker 2: studied the Bill Walsh 49ers. What wins? Backs who catch
- 2:33Speaker 2: the football, throwing to the backs, throwing early, running late,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and prioritizing offensive-defensive lines. You're talking over three decades. How
- 2:43Speaker 2: he's done the same thing. It works. Why don't other
- 2:46Speaker 2: teams do it? The Ravens have to a certain degree,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but no one overdoes it like the Eagles in a
- 2:52Speaker 2: good way, and that's where we go here. The Eagles
- 2:55Speaker 2: have done that. Now they're going younger, though, with their depth.
- 2:57Speaker 2: This is... This is interesting. Howie talked about this with
- 3:02Speaker 2: the media earlier this week as we transition a little bit. Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 2: He said it as we brought it up to start
- 3:08Speaker 2: our pre-training camp show. They have questionable depth on their
- 3:13Speaker 2: offensive line in terms of experience. Howie said, if you
- 3:16Speaker 2: fill me up with truth, Serum, I would tell you
- 3:18Speaker 2: we need to see what our offensive line depth looks like.
- 3:21Speaker 2: This is a little bit we don't know yet. Well,
- 3:23Speaker 2: they learned some stuff at training camp.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's a good place to start, offensive line,
- 3:27Speaker 1: because that's, like you said, that's an area the Eagles
- 3:29Speaker 1: have been ahead of the curve. They are introducing a
- 3:33Speaker 1: new style of blocking system. So even having good veterans
- 3:37Speaker 1: like Lane Johnson and Landon Dickerson, this is something new
- 3:40Speaker 1: for Jordan Mailata, right? This is still something new for them.
- 3:42Speaker 1: We're going to have to see how they adjust. Lane
- 3:44Speaker 1: Johnson missed several weeks. He wasn't in any of the
- 3:48Speaker 1: OTAs that the Eagles were at, so we don't even
- 3:51Speaker 1: know what his OTA participation was. He just wasn't in
- 3:54Speaker 1: the ones that that were open to the media. And
- 3:57Speaker 1: then obviously he missed a couple of weeks for training camp.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I mean, Lane Johnson's a great player. So it's not
- 4:02Speaker 1: that I have concern that all of a sudden he's
- 4:03Speaker 1: going to be among the worst tackles in the league.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But again, I don't think it's been talked about a
- 4:08Speaker 1: whole lot. The adjustment, his role in it, his absence
- 4:11Speaker 1: for a while, his coming off of an injury. So
- 4:15Speaker 1: I do think the offensive line, while it looks like
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's in better shape and with better depth, you just
- 4:20Speaker 1: mentioned it. They're relying on in backups on a guy
- 4:24Speaker 1: who's only played in one game, in Kendall, and that
- 4:26Speaker 1: was a meaningless game, in Willie Lampkin, who has never
- 4:29Speaker 1: played an NFL game, Markel Bell, who has never played
- 4:32Speaker 1: an NFL game. And, you know, obviously that's why Fred
- 4:35Speaker 1: Johnson is on the roster, because he has. But it
- 4:39Speaker 1: is a little bit of a roll of dice, A,
- 4:41Speaker 1: with the inexperience among the backups, and B, with just
- 4:45Speaker 1: in general, how are they going to adjust to a
- 4:47Speaker 1: new scheme, and how is this new offensive line coach
- 4:49Speaker 1: going Now you're getting past development, right? I mean, there's
- 4:52Speaker 1: always development, but training camp is a big time for teaching,
- 4:55Speaker 1: for learning, development. But now it's about scheming. You've got
- 4:59Speaker 1: to be a part of the overall offensive staff that's
- 5:01Speaker 1: coming up with game-to-game blocking and protection schemes, and he's
- 5:07Speaker 1: got to be a big part of that. That was
- 5:08Speaker 1: a Stoutland job for over a decade, and now it's
- 5:11Speaker 1: a new guy.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Think about it. Lane Johnson's first offensive line coach in
- 5:15Speaker 2: the National Football League, Jeff Stoutland in 2013.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Crazy.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It's just, it's a culture shock. The way that he
- 5:24Speaker 2: coached them hard, but with love. Cooper's a former NFL player.
- 5:29Speaker 2: We knew about him when he was with Denver. He
- 5:30Speaker 2: knows the scheme. He played in it under Shanahan. And
- 5:34Speaker 2: he's coached it. He coached it under Kevin O'Connell, Minnesota.
- 5:38Speaker 2: But Cooper does not have a big history of developing players. Now,
- 5:41Speaker 2: it looks good. Okay, it looks good. What we saw,
- 5:44Speaker 2: Willie Lampkin, a great story. Yeah. Great story. No doubt. Now,
- 5:48Speaker 2: if he has to play, who knows? Drew Kennel's start
- 5:49Speaker 2: last year was at center, not guard. The cross-trainment guard. Yep.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You don't know until you get in. And that brings
- 5:56Speaker 2: up why this, you know, our, in our pre-training camp show,
- 6:00Speaker 2: we talked about they need the veteran guard depth. They
- 6:02Speaker 2: still need one. Not on the 53. We're talking 69-man roster.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Everything on the show today is depth for the practice
- 6:10Speaker 2: squad because you could have up to six veterans on
- 6:12Speaker 2: your practice squad.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:14Speaker 2: So that's where someone who knows the system, as you mentioned,
- 6:18Speaker 2: not only zone blocking, this is going to be more
- 6:20Speaker 2: outside zone than inside zone. Now, it's easier said than done.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You've got to go through a lot of tape if
- 6:24Speaker 2: you're the pro personnel staff. This is part of their job,
- 6:26Speaker 2: by the way, is to find these– if it's done
- 6:31Speaker 2: the right way, they'll be assigned– they're generally assigned teams anyway.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But whoever's got these West Coast teams that run the scheme,
- 6:39Speaker 2: they've got to find these guys because if somebody gets hurt,
- 6:43Speaker 2: Willie Lampkin– By the way, okay, great story. Maybe someone
- 6:49Speaker 2: knows this. I don't know if the last offensive lineman
- 6:52Speaker 2: in the National Football League to start a game was
- 6:53Speaker 2: under 5'11. I mean, I'm sure it's happened. I'm sure
- 6:57Speaker 2: it's happened, yeah.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I mean, Nick Cole might have been 5'11.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Well, he might have been listed as 6 feet, but
- 7:02Speaker 2: we stood next to him. He was a fire hydrant.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I said 5'10, whatever the hell, 5'11, something.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and he was a player who the more he played,
- 7:09Speaker 1: the more it got worse. So that's not a great thing, yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 1: No, it's unique because the practice squad, as you're mentioning,
- 7:19Speaker 1: you know, they went out, they brought back Ojukwu, and
- 7:22Speaker 1: they brought back Majors, okay? Two guys that they're trying
- 7:24Speaker 1: to develop, but not guys like you're saying with NFL experience,
- 7:27Speaker 1: or a little scant NFL experience for Ojukwu. Not the
- 7:31Speaker 1: veteran that you're talking about.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yeah, who started for someone who was in the back nine,
- 7:37Speaker 2: who understands, like, you're not coming here to start. You're
- 7:40Speaker 2: coming here to try to win a ring. You're going
- 7:41Speaker 2: to have a chance to win a ring here. Yes,
- 7:43Speaker 2: that's what they're looking for. You're getting sold on winning.
- 7:48Speaker 2: You've made a lot of money in your career. Someone
- 7:49Speaker 2: on the back nine who Eagles have a history. I
- 7:55Speaker 2: don't know why I thought of this guy. Steve Vallis,
- 7:57Speaker 2: remember him? I don't know why.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I don't either.
- 8:01Speaker 2: He came here for the Mudmobile, Howard Mud. Mud coached
- 8:06Speaker 2: him in Indy, I think.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And then, of course, there are other acquisition was the
- 8:14Speaker 1: bears tackle who's still a developmental guy he's not he
- 8:16Speaker 1: doesn't fit that category either you pronounce his name better
- 8:19Speaker 1: than me it's kiran arm yeah yeah yeah that's not
- 8:25Speaker 1: a plug and play guy either.
- 8:26Speaker 2: He doesn't have experience to move this along here they
- 8:29Speaker 2: need they really need just one guy within that you
- 8:32Speaker 2: know within the first half of the season because if
- 8:34Speaker 2: somebody gets hurt these inexperienced guys are going in and
- 8:38Speaker 2: You want to have an answer. You want to know
- 8:40Speaker 2: because this is a playoff team. Eagles are a playoff team.
- 8:42Speaker 2: The odds makers believe that as well. Barely over Dallas,
- 8:46Speaker 2: which is another show entirely. But, yeah, you just don't–
- 8:49Speaker 2: you always have– there's a saying in the National Football League,
- 8:51Speaker 2: what's our answer if this happens? You have to have
- 8:53Speaker 2: an answer.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Right. Let's talk about the wide receiver group. It didn't
- 8:56Speaker 1: hit me until you actually brought this up recently in
- 8:59Speaker 1: a pod, I believe. And that was that without A.J.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Brown and with Darius Cooper not expected to really play
- 9:06Speaker 1: a big role– They really don't have the ideal mix
- 9:10Speaker 1: of size to go along with like their quickness and
- 9:13Speaker 1: other traits. You know, Hollywood Brown's not a big guy.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Devontae Smith is a very good contestant. He plays big,
- 9:19Speaker 1: but you always worry about injury. He's fine. Like there's nothing,
- 9:21Speaker 1: you're not changing anything about Devontae Smith, but in general,
- 9:25Speaker 1: Makai Lemon we know is a, it was a, is
- 9:27Speaker 1: a shorter, short arm receiver. They don't have someone with
- 9:31Speaker 1: that great play strength outside of Devontae that you would
- 9:34Speaker 1: like to see on the opposite side, that X who's
- 9:38Speaker 1: known for being very physical. I think Tate Wicks is
- 9:41Speaker 1: at a nice camp, and he gets in and out
- 9:43Speaker 1: of his breaks well. I don't know that I would
- 9:44Speaker 1: describe him as someone who has physicality of a pure
- 9:49Speaker 1: dominant X receiver. They're a little small.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, there's only one A.J. Brown. Right. But the term,
- 9:58Speaker 2: and I got this. a couple years ago, and then
- 10:01Speaker 2: this just came up in a conversation with someone on
- 10:04Speaker 2: another team last week who actually brought it up to
- 10:05Speaker 2: me without even bringing it up because I was just
- 10:07Speaker 2: talking about are there any receivers with size out there
- 10:11Speaker 2: you think Philly could sign? This guy, he knows Eagles
- 10:14Speaker 2: roster really well, and he goes, well, yeah, without A.J. Brown,
- 10:17Speaker 2: they don't have size protection. for Devante Smith. I said, hey,
- 10:21Speaker 2: I've heard this before. Can you explain it to me?
- 10:23Speaker 2: He goes, yeah, there's certain routes that you're not going
- 10:25Speaker 2: to ask Devante Smith to run. He's just not as
- 10:29Speaker 2: good of a player he is. He's not built like A.J. Brown,
- 10:32Speaker 2: who's muscled up. And Wicks is long, but he's not muscled.
- 10:35Speaker 2: He's not that guy, dominant physical presence. And he goes, yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 2: he doesn't have that protection. And I said to this guy,
- 10:43Speaker 2: I said, do you think that would make sense for
- 10:46Speaker 2: them to play Dallas Goddard at the exposition a little bit?
- 10:48Speaker 2: He goes, every team does that with their tight ends.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And I said, yeah, Philly did with Sackhurst. He doesn't
- 10:54Speaker 2: run very well. He wasn't as great as he was.
- 10:56Speaker 2: He just wasn't a speed guy. Goddard's done before. He goes, yeah.
- 10:59Speaker 2: He goes, that's a natural thing for them to do.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And he didn't know the roster like you and I did.
- 11:04Speaker 2: But he said that absolutely they're going to have an
- 11:08Speaker 2: issue without A.J. Brown. You don't have that protection for Smitty.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And I said, yeah, Hollywood Brown's 5'9. He's small. He
- 11:15Speaker 2: actually might even be smaller than 5'9. He's small. Lodge
- 11:18Speaker 2: Moore is 5'10. Or actually, he's under 5'10. He's actually 5'9.5.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Smitty is 6' even. Makai Lemon is smaller than 6 feet.
- 11:27Speaker 2: So they don't have that. So that's something. Now, when
- 11:30Speaker 2: you look at personnel groupings and matchups, this is something
- 11:36Speaker 2: we're going to look into. We haven't really talked about
- 11:38Speaker 2: this much. But this guy had me thinking. And I
- 11:42Speaker 2: looked at it as I brought it up to you.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I said, there are a small group of receivers. We
- 11:45Speaker 2: haven't seen this in a while. Now, Darius Cooper's rocked up.
- 11:49Speaker 2: He's reshaped his body, but he's not six feet. He's
- 11:52Speaker 2: not long. Wicks is a long guy, but he's not explosive.
- 11:56Speaker 2: And as you said, and I agree, you would not
- 11:58Speaker 2: look at him as a physical receiver like A.J. Brown is.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Correct.
- 12:01Speaker 2: That's something to watch here. So to move this along here, yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 2: it's something they could look for their practice squad. A
- 12:06Speaker 2: guy with size who knows the West Coast system like
- 12:09Speaker 2: Wicks does, by the way. Easier said than done. Again,
- 12:12Speaker 2: a guy that maybe it's in mid-career, back nine of
- 12:15Speaker 2: his career, that would like to win. And you know what?
- 12:20Speaker 2: The Eagles have a lot of receivers on their 53,
- 12:21Speaker 2: probably too many. But they don't have something with size.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It's something to look at going forward.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and by the way, this is a secondary concern.
- 12:29Speaker 1: It's not a fault of Howie. I think he's actually
- 12:31Speaker 1: had more wide receiver depth this year than in quite
- 12:34Speaker 1: a bit of years. But if Devontae Smith were to
- 12:36Speaker 1: miss three to four games, I think this wide receiver
- 12:38Speaker 1: group would be in a lot of trouble.
- 12:39Speaker 2: In trouble, yeah.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Which would make the offense be in a lot of trouble.
- 12:42Speaker 2: By the way, there'll be 14 personnel.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Yeah. If we see an extra offensive tackles out, they'll
- 12:49Speaker 1: be running 80% of the play.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I mean, dude, it would not be good. But you
- 12:54Speaker 2: have to do what you got to do here. And then,
- 12:57Speaker 2: you know, finally on offense, we talked about the tight
- 13:00Speaker 2: ends for a bit. They have enough, but that's not
- 13:02Speaker 2: what it is. The issue is if Goddard got hurt,
- 13:07Speaker 2: Stowers isn't ready. Jenkins is a three at best. And
- 13:10Speaker 2: Munkake is a wide tight end who doesn't catch the football. Yeah.
- 13:15Speaker 2: And as of now, as we speak here on Thursday,
- 13:18Speaker 2: they'll only have a tight end on their practice squad.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I don't think so. No.
- 13:25Speaker 1: No, they don't. We talked about that in the practice
- 13:26Speaker 1: squad pod. Like, how do they not have a tight
- 13:28Speaker 1: end on the practice squad?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Now, we'll have a list. We'll put together a best
- 13:33Speaker 2: available players that are on the street. And by the way,
- 13:37Speaker 2: you want them. Here's another thing. Knowing West Coast terminology,
- 13:41Speaker 2: you've got to know the West Coast system. It's very important.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Muntz played almost his entire career in the West Coast system. Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 2: That's a big reason why he's here. That's the reason
- 13:50Speaker 2: why he's here.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Because he knows the system and he can block. So
- 13:53Speaker 2: that's something to look at here, how things change. And
- 13:56Speaker 2: we'll get to defense in a minute. It's like, you
- 13:59Speaker 2: got to know the Fangio system. The Eagles are learning
- 14:01Speaker 2: that the hard way. Bennett didn't know it, Jaqueline Bennett.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And he just says he didn't get it. He's hurt
- 14:06Speaker 2: right now, but that stuff matters.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and you can say what you want to me
- 14:11Speaker 1: as just a negadelfian approach, but I can't get it
- 14:15Speaker 1: out of my head that the Eagles are going to
- 14:16Speaker 1: be relying heavily on Johnny Munt, especially at the start
- 14:20Speaker 1: of the year where they have these injuries and uncertainty.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And Munt is a guy that the Jaguars released. This
- 14:25Speaker 1: was not a free agent who was looking for a
- 14:28Speaker 1: better paycheck somewhere else. This is a guy who was
- 14:30Speaker 1: already cut and trying to hang on and has been
- 14:33Speaker 1: one-dimensional throughout his career. And this is a guy who's
- 14:35Speaker 1: probably going to play a decent amount of snaps for
- 14:38Speaker 1: the Eagles early on. So part of that makes me
- 14:40Speaker 1: just wonder when you sandwich that with what we said
- 14:42Speaker 1: about the offensive line and the wide receiver group, it
- 14:45Speaker 1: just gives me some overall question marks about the offense's
- 14:48Speaker 1: ability to reach its potential when it doesn't have everything
- 14:51Speaker 1: it needs right now, and then you sandwich in or
- 14:53Speaker 1: combine in the first-time play caller.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Go ahead. I would just say that on what you
- 14:59Speaker 2: just said about it doesn't have everything it needs. The
- 15:01Speaker 2: starting 11 is pretty good. Now, yes, there are questions
- 15:06Speaker 2: about the offensive lineman's health, and we did look good
- 15:09Speaker 2: in training camp, but you don't know until you get
- 15:10Speaker 2: into a regular season game. They didn't play in the preseason. Right.
- 15:13Speaker 2: The– Size is an issue. There are some issues. But
- 15:19Speaker 2: as we've learned, and I cannot use this example enough,
- 15:23Speaker 2: you don't have to have great talent to beat anybody.
- 15:27Speaker 2: The Eagles got housed by the Niners. The Niners were
- 15:29Speaker 2: playing all backups pretty much at receiver and tight end.
- 15:32Speaker 2: They got embarrassed. Jake Tongs, we found out who Jake
- 15:34Speaker 2: Tongs is. The league found out about him. Now, you
- 15:37Speaker 2: don't want to do, like, okay, that's an isolated game.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You don't want to do it over 17 weeks. You're
- 15:41Speaker 2: not going to win a lot, but Like, you could
- 15:44Speaker 2: get away with it, but if somebody gets hurt, as
- 15:48Speaker 2: you outlined, we'll move to defense in a minute here,
- 15:51Speaker 2: you better have answers, man. And the answers here, if
- 15:54Speaker 2: some guys get hurt, it would be a concern.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And I'll just quickly gloss over this, and
- 16:02Speaker 1: maybe we'll talk about it later on the pod. Sean
- 16:05Speaker 1: Mannion being the first-time play caller, I know that the
- 16:08Speaker 1: team has spoke highly of him. I've liked what I've seen.
- 16:10Speaker 1: In camp, I certainly can see the difference in how
- 16:12Speaker 1: the offensive construct will be. But with any first-time coach,
- 16:17Speaker 1: they can hit the ground running. But the NFL will
- 16:19Speaker 1: adjust to you. What you do will be on tape.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And how you do it is going to be scrutinized, right,
- 16:26Speaker 1: from week to week and then in offseason. I think
- 16:29Speaker 1: one of my bigger questions will be as we go
- 16:30Speaker 1: along throughout the year is if there is some good
- 16:33Speaker 1: offensive success, there's harmony and stuff, how will he adjust
- 16:37Speaker 1: to the adjustments? Because he has never been in this–
- 16:40Speaker 1: position before never had to do it and he hasn't
- 16:42Speaker 1: even been like the guy behind the guy for a
- 16:44Speaker 1: long time he's only been a coach for two years
- 16:46Speaker 1: i mean i get being a backup quarterback is part
- 16:49Speaker 1: of that but it's not the same thing so i
- 16:51Speaker 1: think all season long i'm gonna be wondering if they
- 16:53Speaker 1: have some good spurts of offense early and teams start
- 16:58Speaker 1: doing something different what what kind of counter punch is
- 17:00Speaker 1: he gonna have as a guy who's never been in
- 17:02Speaker 1: that position before wait wait That's why it's a lingering
- 17:06Speaker 1: thought I would have about it.
- 17:07Speaker 2: By the way, week one, it's two offensive coordinators who
- 17:10Speaker 2: are now in their third year and coaching. David Blau.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:13Speaker 2: He's actually younger than Mannion. And Mannion. Yeah. They're all
- 17:18Speaker 2: going to. Ben Johnson had to learn. When he got
- 17:20Speaker 2: pressed into service, when Dan Campbell kept missing on offensive coordinators,
- 17:23Speaker 2: he was like, who's this Ben Johnson guy? Nobody knew
- 17:26Speaker 2: anything about him. He coached with Miami. He's brought up
- 17:29Speaker 2: in the West Coast system. You don't know until they
- 17:32Speaker 2: get there. It's the same with players. It all looks
- 17:34Speaker 2: great in the preseason, but until they play real games,
- 17:36Speaker 2: you don't know.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 2: You don't know until they have to do it.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and look at this. You get Robert Sala week two.
- 17:42Speaker 1: He's good. He's a very good defensive mind. You get
- 17:46Speaker 1: Dennis Allen week three, one of the best. You get
- 17:48Speaker 1: Chris Shula in this legendary Rams defense week four. Good luck. Yeah,
- 17:53Speaker 1: good luck. Good luck. As I've gotten older, I've really
- 17:56Speaker 1: tried to concentrate on my physical health, my body, making
- 18:00Speaker 1: sure I'm putting the right things in and the healthiest
- 18:02Speaker 1: things in. I've always heard about creatine, but I wasn't
- 18:06Speaker 1: really sure about using creatine supplements until I did the
- 18:09Speaker 1: research to find out what it was really all about.
- 18:12Speaker 1: That's when I found Momentous, which created Signature Spec Creatine,
- 18:16Speaker 1: their most advanced creatine ever, setting a new standard for
- 18:21Speaker 1: for creatine quality. It's one of the only creatines to
- 18:24Speaker 1: be manufactured in a pharmaceutical facility using reverse osmosis water
- 18:28Speaker 1: purification and verified through an expanded six stage testing process
- 18:33Speaker 1: with four independent agencies. They've improved the product experience with
- 18:37Speaker 1: ultra fine powder that mixes effortlessly with no grit or clumping. Hey, look,
- 18:43Speaker 1: I like a good creatine shake in the afternoon and
- 18:46Speaker 1: it's got to taste good and be smooth. The benefits
- 18:49Speaker 1: of creatine are very real. It supports strength, power, lean
- 18:53Speaker 1: muscle growth, recovery, and even improve cognitive performance. And as
- 18:57Speaker 1: I get older, all of those things are so much
- 18:59Speaker 1: more important to me than they used to be. If

- 21:05Speaker 1: Prize picks run your game. Speaking of defense, let's transition
- 21:09Speaker 1: to the Eagles defense. We have discussed this cornerback situation,
- 21:13Speaker 1: this depth situation. Just like I said with Devontae, if
- 21:16Speaker 1: Quinn Young-Mitchell Orreek Wollin, where'd he get hurt? Had to
- 21:20Speaker 1: miss a couple weeks? Man, you're looking at this thing
- 21:23Speaker 1: like you're hoping the rest of the defense can hold
- 21:25Speaker 1: it together and kind of compensate for what is going
- 21:27Speaker 1: to be a glaring hole at the other cornerback spot.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah, if it was long-term, it most certainly would be
- 21:33Speaker 2: putting DeGene back a corner. Now, short-term, it's Jonathan Jones.
- 21:37Speaker 2: But Jonathan Jones is another guy. 33 years old, he's–
- 21:44Speaker 2: I mean, you just don't know. I mean, he turns 33,
- 21:46Speaker 2: 33 tackling in two weeks, but he's 33 in NFL years.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Age 33 season. Yep. He's hurt last season, hurt this
- 21:55Speaker 2: season inside outside capability, but he's more of an outside corner.
- 22:00Speaker 2: It's it. We'll see. It's kind of like it. Now, again, if,
- 22:03Speaker 2: if one of the top three gets hurt, including Jones Jones, well,
- 22:07Speaker 2: let's say one of the stars gets hurt. Jones moves
- 22:09Speaker 2: up your third corner, Mac, big Williams. Yeah. Now, up
- 22:15Speaker 2: and down in training camp, up and down as an Eagle,
- 22:18Speaker 2: fifth round pick. You need one more guy in the
- 22:22Speaker 2: practice squad who knows the system, knows this match carry delivery,
- 22:27Speaker 2: the match mirror match system it's called. Yeah. It's not
- 22:31Speaker 2: like that's not easy to find. More teams are playing Fangio,
- 22:36Speaker 2: so you can find some guys, but it's not easy.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Right. And this is where... I think Michael Carter Jr.,
- 22:43Speaker 1: or the second, I mean, becomes such an important piece
- 22:47Speaker 1: of the defense if there are injuries. Because if Cooper
- 22:49Speaker 1: DeGene– if they do get an injury to an outside corner,
- 22:52Speaker 1: you're right. DeGene would have to step in there. And
- 22:54Speaker 1: then that would allow Makuba and Marcus Epps to be
- 22:59Speaker 1: your safety tandem, but it would probably put Carter, the second,
- 23:02Speaker 1: as your top nickel with DeGene playing the outside.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Yeah, because you would want to keep the gene outside
- 23:09Speaker 1: in those situations if you didn't have either Mitchell or
- 23:12Speaker 1: or or Rick Willen. So long term. Yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 1: If they're out long term. But so the gift and
- 23:18Speaker 1: the curse thing is real about Michael Carter to the second.
- 23:21Speaker 1: He's trying to earn a starting safety spot. But he's
- 23:23Speaker 1: so valuable as a movable piece in that secondary that
- 23:26Speaker 1: it just it makes it makes sense to have him there.
- 23:29Speaker 1: And it's it's a benefit for the Eagles. Not if
- 23:31Speaker 1: he has to play. You don't want it to. But
- 23:32Speaker 1: if you believe you can hold it down if he
- 23:35Speaker 1: needs to.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and look, again, the key is Vic made this
- 23:39Speaker 2: commitment to move to Gene Off Corner. He likes to
- 23:42Speaker 2: stick with it. He did address it early in training camp.
- 23:47Speaker 2: He talked about it. You got to do what you
- 23:50Speaker 2: got to do as a coach. But they just need
- 23:53Speaker 2: one guy. You got all these players you don't need
- 23:54Speaker 2: on the 53. They're just the practice squad. You understand
- 23:58Speaker 2: that they're here to try to win a ring. And
- 24:01Speaker 2: if they're called upon, be ready. Just be ready mentally.
- 24:04Speaker 2: And the coaches have to coach them up. And no
- 24:06Speaker 2: more Christian Parker, by the way. That's a big deal.
- 24:08Speaker 2: He's no longer here. Vic Protege is now running Dallas' defense.
- 24:14Speaker 2: So we'll see what happens.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Yeah. I have one last sort of defense. This is
- 24:18Speaker 1: not a concern. This is just something I'm thinking about, okay?
- 24:21Speaker 1: The Eagles, we've talked about, are going to be in
- 24:22Speaker 1: base defense quite a bit. They're going to play a
- 24:24Speaker 1: lot of 12 and some 13 personnel teams. We suspect
- 24:27Speaker 1: that'll put them in base, which means Dajim will be
- 24:29Speaker 1: out of the nickel and at safety. And I just
- 24:33Speaker 1: wonder about their ability to tackle at the edges in
- 24:36Speaker 1: the run. Campbell is a guy that Vic Fangio said
- 24:39Speaker 1: needed more work, played in the first preseason game, still
- 24:43Speaker 1: learning how to be a downhill player the right way.
- 24:46Speaker 1: His coverage is amazing. Athleticism is great. That's an upgrade
- 24:48Speaker 1: over to Kobe. But in Campbell and then at the edge,
- 24:52Speaker 1: you know, we saw many, many years ago we joked
- 24:54Speaker 1: about how Sean Payton basically funneled his run game with
- 24:57Speaker 1: the Saints at the nickel. Who is it? Sidney Jones?
- 25:02Speaker 2: Oh, he talked about the Peter King piece. Yeah, he
- 25:04Speaker 2: actually made it on the record. We were going after
- 25:06Speaker 2: Sidney Jones.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Right. So, you know, Rick Wolin is a guy who
- 25:10Speaker 1: did not play on rundowns for Seattle because they just
- 25:13Speaker 1: didn't think he was a very good run defender. You
- 25:15Speaker 1: got Campbell learning. You can be a little light on
- 25:18Speaker 1: the edges, although you have good run defensive edge setters.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I just, after watching last year, I'm not going to
- 25:25Speaker 1: just rubber stamp that this is going to be a,
- 25:27Speaker 1: great run defense because they had some real flaws, both
- 25:31Speaker 1: up the middle and to the edges. You can convince
- 25:32Speaker 1: me up the middle, they'll be better at them because
- 25:35Speaker 1: Carter's healthy and Carter and Davis is fine. But I
- 25:39Speaker 1: would have some concern about the really good offensive minds,
- 25:42Speaker 1: getting the Eagles into base, getting the gene out of
- 25:45Speaker 1: the nickel and then trying to run toward the woolen
- 25:48Speaker 1: Campbell sides, you know, just to see if they can get,
- 25:50Speaker 1: get some space there. That's a small thing, but it's just,
- 25:53Speaker 1: it's something that I've been thinking about after last year.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Yeah, the Chicago game, Carter's shoulder was bad. Right.
- 26:00Speaker 1: There were some other games, too. Dallas ran on him
- 26:02Speaker 1: pretty well.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It doesn't excuse the other guys not showing up.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:06Speaker 2: They gave up. I don't know if it was NFL records.
- 26:08Speaker 2: It certainly had to be a team record where they
- 26:09Speaker 2: gave up two 100-year rushers in the first half of
- 26:12Speaker 2: a game like that. I don't know Vic Fangio, but
- 26:16Speaker 2: I know he can get salty talking to people who
- 26:17Speaker 2: work with him. I mean, if I'm him, I am
- 26:19Speaker 2: going off. I am like, what the? It was so embarrassing.
- 26:27Speaker 2: The lack of effort. Right. You know, now usually the
- 26:30Speaker 2: effort's phenomenal for those. They're a great D-line, but it's
- 26:33Speaker 2: just they had a bad game. It happens. But, you know, Carter,
- 26:38Speaker 2: excuse me, Campbell is not instinctive like Trott Jr. or
- 26:41Speaker 2: Nick Kobe. He's just not.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Not yet.
- 26:43Speaker 2: That's right. Because his inexperience at the linebacker position. Remember,
- 26:48Speaker 2: he went to Alabama as an edge rusher. So he's
- 26:50Speaker 2: got to make up for lost time. He's been hurt
- 26:52Speaker 2: a lot over his career, football career, going back to Alabama. Yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 2: You don't know. The good thing is if he has
- 26:57Speaker 2: to play, Trot Jr. has shown he can do it. But, yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 2: the tackling of the corners. I remember Jim Schwartz talking
- 27:05Speaker 2: about when, you know, with his scheme, playing that wide
- 27:08Speaker 2: nine front, the corners have to tackle. They move up.
- 27:10Speaker 2: They got to tackle. Whatever scheme you run, and we
- 27:13Speaker 2: don't talk about it enough, you got to be able
- 27:16Speaker 2: to tackle if you're a defensive back. And it's not
- 27:18Speaker 2: just the front seven. The defensive backs have to tackle, too.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And you mentioned Woolen. Yeah. You're going to know a
- 27:23Speaker 2: lot about in the first quarter of the season, the
- 27:25Speaker 2: Eagles are going to be challenged. I know Washington with
- 27:27Speaker 2: all their injuries on their offensive line, maybe not. Maybe
- 27:30Speaker 2: not week two against Tennessee, but you mentioned weeks three
- 27:33Speaker 2: and four. Although Brian Dable knows the Eagles, who's the
- 27:35Speaker 2: play caller for the Titans. Yeah. But Ben Johnson and
- 27:39Speaker 2: Sean McVay. Yep.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Is Jackson going to week five? That's another team that
- 27:45Speaker 1: I think is going to be, I know their offensive
- 27:47Speaker 1: line is not very good, but. They like to run.
- 27:51Speaker 2: I didn't even realize they play Jacksonville at Jacksonville.
- 27:55Speaker 1: That's in London, right?
- 27:57Speaker 2: Yes, that's the London game. 9.30 Eastern here we see it.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Liam Cohen, he had an unbelievable first year. Three straight weeks.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Of a Shanahan-style outside zone run game. Three pretty good
- 28:14Speaker 1: offensive minds there. I still don't know how Jacksonville won
- 28:18Speaker 1: 13 games last year with that offensive line, but they
- 28:20Speaker 1: did it.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I mean, I give Liam Cohn credit. I know there's
- 28:23Speaker 2: some people in the National Football League where we're concerned
- 28:25Speaker 2: about him, didn't know. We thought it might be a
- 28:28Speaker 2: little bit early for him, but again, it's only year one,
- 28:30Speaker 2: you know, because look, not that it's the same thing,
- 28:34Speaker 2: but you saw Doug came in as a white knight,
- 28:37Speaker 2: you know, on the horse. Yeah. First year, phenomenal. Then
- 28:40Speaker 2: it was downhill after that, because after Urban Meyer, you
- 28:42Speaker 2: needed anybody who'd bring him positivity. Right. And Doug's tenure
- 28:46Speaker 2: did not end well with Jacksonville, and Liam Cohn comes
- 28:48Speaker 2: in here and blows it up. Does great.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Sophomore season, we'll see. Yeah.
- 28:54Speaker 1: So, yeah, those will be three straight really good offensive minds,
- 28:58Speaker 1: good 12-type personnel run teams that are going to take
- 29:01Speaker 1: it to the Eagles, and they got to be up
- 29:02Speaker 1: to the challenge every week. Like you said, you can't
- 29:05Speaker 1: really have one of those letdown weeks. All right. So
- 29:09Speaker 1: any other concerns defensively? I will be the first to
- 29:12Speaker 1: admit that was of me, like, really sitting down thinking, what?
- 29:15Speaker 1: What non-personnel, like conceptual concern would I have about this
- 29:19Speaker 1: Eagles defense based on, you know, last year what we
- 29:23Speaker 1: saw and any changes they made this year? And that
- 29:25Speaker 1: was really the one thing that jumped into my mind.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Losing to Kobe and with Campbell as you get a
- 29:32Speaker 1: little bit of a downgrade, certainly in attacking the line
- 29:36Speaker 1: of scrimmage and upgrading coverage, and then going to Rick
- 29:38Speaker 1: Wolin and immediately saying he's a three-down, four-down corner, which
- 29:43Speaker 1: Seattle was not willing to do, just sort of set
- 29:45Speaker 1: up a flag for me.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Yep, yep. I would finish off just as an overview
- 29:50Speaker 2: before we get out of here. I would, because people
- 29:53Speaker 2: have asked me this question, and I'll just summarize it
- 29:55Speaker 2: very quickly. I'll give you the Clifton's version. The strength
- 29:58Speaker 2: on this football team, offensive defense, Quarterback, obviously with Hurts,
- 30:02Speaker 2: but they have guys who could handle this. McKee and Dalton,
- 30:08Speaker 2: they just didn't do a good job in training camp.
- 30:10Speaker 2: There's a concern there about if they had to play,
- 30:13Speaker 2: particularly McKee, because he's new to the system. But he's
- 30:17Speaker 2: got the talent to do it. But it is a
- 30:19Speaker 2: concern if Hurts gets hurt. The running back depth is
- 30:23Speaker 2: very good. Bigsby, one of the best backup running backs.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Shipley really had a great training camp. I mean, he
- 30:27Speaker 2: looks explosive. He's good in the South side system. The
- 30:30Speaker 2: receiver depth is fine. It's okay. Yes. There's a drop
- 30:34Speaker 2: off if Smith gets hurt, but if nobody gets hurt,
- 30:36Speaker 2: they're going to be okay. Tight end depth, questionable D
- 30:40Speaker 2: line front seven, phenomenal. Once Gronar gets back, show me
- 30:44Speaker 2: a better front seven, the national football league. I don't know.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I don't know if there is one. They also have
- 30:47Speaker 2: offensive line. They also have defensive tackle depth with youngest
- 30:51Speaker 2: really good. And Robinson came on. Trot juniors, one of
- 30:54Speaker 2: the best backup linebackers in the league, but, um, If
- 30:58Speaker 2: nobody gets hurt, they're going to be good in the secondary.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Is safety, do we know about safety yet? It's a
- 31:03Speaker 2: major question mark. That is, by the way, it's the
- 31:06Speaker 2: biggest issue for me, and I don't know about you,
- 31:08Speaker 2: the biggest issue of the starters is the safeties. We
- 31:13Speaker 2: don't know how good Makuba is. We haven't talked about
- 31:14Speaker 2: him enough. We have no idea.
- 31:15Speaker 1: I agree. And Epps is another year older, and he's
- 31:19Speaker 1: not necessarily a traits measurable guy. It's a box safety.
- 31:21Speaker 2: It's not a post safety. It's a box safety.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:25Speaker 2: So, who knows?
- 31:26Speaker 1: All right. Well, Yeah, yeah, good stuff, good stuff, good
- 31:29Speaker 1: introspective look at some of the things. I mean, we
- 31:33Speaker 1: do podcasts on all the good things about the Eagles.
- 31:35Speaker 1: It's okay if we just talk about some lingering concerns
- 31:37Speaker 1: going in.
- 31:38Speaker 2: But honestly, on that, I'm not– like I'm sure if
- 31:42Speaker 2: we– I would love to go back and look at
- 31:44Speaker 2: our 2020 show six years ago. I'm sure we bludgeoned
- 31:46Speaker 2: the team coming into the season. Yeah. I can't imagine
- 31:49Speaker 2: we felt good about it and it was a terrible team. Wait,
- 31:52Speaker 2: which year? 2020, 2020. Oh, yeah.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Last bad year for Howie's 20. The roster is bad. Yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 1: What's that? You could really see it coming.
- 32:02Speaker 2: It was bad. It reminded me a lot of Andy's
- 32:04Speaker 2: last year in 2012. Very similar.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 33:05Speaker 1: and up.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Howie's on a heater here. Doesn't mean he's perfect. He's
- 33:09Speaker 2: made his share of mistakes over the years, but he's
- 33:11Speaker 2: corrected a lot of them. We'll talk more about this
- 33:16Speaker 2: next week. We have plenty more shows to do. We'll
- 33:19Speaker 2: get into Washington next week. Is this a Super Bowl
- 33:23Speaker 2: roster to you?
- 33:26Speaker 1: It's a Super Bowl defense. I think if you have
- 33:31Speaker 1: a Super Bowl caliber side of the ball, like defense
- 33:36Speaker 1: or offense, then you can say you're a Super Bowl contender,
- 33:39Speaker 1: which I think that the Eagles can probably say right now, hypothetically,
- 33:43Speaker 1: like for example, Seattle was not a great offensive team.
- 33:47Speaker 1: They were good. They were not great. And any, all
- 33:49Speaker 1: the metrics, their, their passing game, their running game, their
- 33:51Speaker 1: offense was middle of the pack, but they had an
- 33:53Speaker 1: unbelievable defense and they wrote it to a Superbowl. So
- 33:57Speaker 1: could the Eagles do that similarly? Sure. If their offense
- 33:59Speaker 1: is just like 14th, if their passing offense is like
- 34:04Speaker 1: 20th instead of 29th, you know, maybe that didn't, this
- 34:07Speaker 1: is a legit Superbowl team for sure. But I just
- 34:09Speaker 1: got to see that first and, see if these changes
- 34:12Speaker 1: on offense worked out and if they can compensate for
- 34:15Speaker 1: doing it in a totally different way with no A.J. Brown.
- 34:19Speaker 2: That's it. And it's going to be some small ball,
- 34:22Speaker 2: lots of crossers. We saw this in training camp. This,
- 34:26Speaker 2: to me, is more of what I saw of an
- 34:28Speaker 2: old-school West Coast offense. We saw a lot of it
- 34:31Speaker 2: because the Eagles ran their stuff against New England in
- 34:34Speaker 2: the practice, not in the game. They ran their system. Boy,
- 34:40Speaker 2: it looks a lot like Shanahan McVay. Maybe more Shanahan
- 34:45Speaker 2: in the concepts. But it's definitely a combination of both.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And it's... I'll tell you what, though. If Hertz gets it,
- 34:54Speaker 2: if Hertz gets it and he's bought in from everything
- 34:56Speaker 2: we've heard, I know it probably sure sounds like it,
- 35:00Speaker 2: they're going to be better than I think. I have
- 35:01Speaker 2: them for 11-12 wins. I give win ranges for all teams.
- 35:04Speaker 2: I don't see them being a 13-14 win team. I just....
- 35:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the ball would have to bounce the
- 35:08Speaker 1: right way for that.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I agree. We didn't even talk about Barkley. We'll talk
- 35:13Speaker 2: more about this next week. Could Saquon– I actually have
- 35:16Speaker 2: that written down. Can he get back to– There are
- 35:20Speaker 2: outstanding questions. For this team to be 13-15 wins, to
- 35:24Speaker 2: be a Super Bowl team, it's got to be– things
- 35:27Speaker 2: have to happen that we didn't see, which obviously could
- 35:30Speaker 2: happen and probably will happen.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Very well said. Good way to end it. That's going
- 35:34Speaker 1: to do it for this episode of Inside the Birds,
- 35:36Speaker 1: the leading podcast in Eagles intel. And as always, we
