2:13
Speaker 3: All right, so I'm going to introduce you to a
2:17
Speaker 3: concept this morning, something called Wonder School. And you know,
2:22
Speaker 3: we've heard, we all hear about the crisis that we
2:25
Speaker 3: have in our daycares centers in West Virginia, really around
2:29
Speaker 3: the country, but especially here in West Virginia. We're known
2:32
Speaker 3: for having the lowest workforce participation rate in America, and sadly,
2:36
Speaker 3: one of the reasons we have that. One of the
2:38
Speaker 3: reasons is the fact that we don't have we don't
2:41
Speaker 3: have quality childcare. People got nothing to do with the kids.
2:44
Speaker 3: So there's some folks that are trying to work on
2:46
Speaker 3: that situation. We want to bring in Jason Moss to
2:49
Speaker 3: the show. Jason, Welcome to the show.
2:52
Speaker 6: Hello, I'm glad to be here.
2:53
Speaker 5: All right, So what.
2:54
Speaker 3: Are we talking about this morning? Do you give us
2:56
Speaker 3: this whole concept of what you folks are doing. We'll
2:58
Speaker 3: get into the particulars later, but give us the overall
3:00
Speaker 3: view of this concept of what you're trying to do.
3:05
Speaker 6: As you just said, West Virginia has a childcare crisis.
3:11
Speaker 6: There's sixty five percent of the state's residents are in
3:14
Speaker 6: a childcare desert and the labor workforce participation rate US
3:19
Speaker 6: fifty four point eight percent. That's the lowest in the country,
3:22
Speaker 6: and it points to sort of the lack of available
3:26
Speaker 6: childcare and affordable childcare as a reason for that crisis.
3:32
Speaker 6: What I mean is that we've got to figure out
3:34
Speaker 6: how to ensure that there's more available childcare so that
3:39
Speaker 6: parents don't need to reduce their hours, they don't need
3:42
Speaker 6: to leave the workforce, and they can they can stay
3:44
Speaker 6: in work. And so Wonder School has been asked by
3:49
Speaker 6: the state to come in to help to address this problem,
3:52
Speaker 6: and one of the ways we're doing it is through
3:54
Speaker 6: something very innovative called try Share.
3:58
Speaker 3: All right, break break that down for try Share. I
4:00
Speaker 3: love the titles Wonder School and try Share. I love
4:03
Speaker 3: the titles.
4:05
Speaker 6: Try Share is a great concept. It's it's basically saying
4:08
Speaker 6: that the the way to make childcare more accessible is
4:14
Speaker 6: if you share the cost three ways between uh an employer,
4:19
Speaker 6: the state of West Virginia, and the employee and so
4:24
Speaker 6: the and that and that's and that's the gist. It's
4:26
Speaker 6: it's it's free for businesses. And the way that It
4:29
Speaker 6: works as an employer would say, I am uh invested
4:33
Speaker 6: in this particular employee, I'm going to help contribute towards
4:39
Speaker 6: a portion of their childcare costs. Whatever amount that that
4:43
Speaker 6: employer decides. The state is then going to match that
4:47
Speaker 6: amount on a slide and scale, and then the employee
4:51
Speaker 6: tastes the difference.
4:54
Speaker 3: You know this, it's a very interesting concept. Go ahead
4:56
Speaker 3: and continue. I'm sorry, didn't mean to cut you off.
4:57
Speaker 6: Go ahead, no, no, no, and and and what one
4:59
Speaker 6: and under school is sort of kind of the technology
5:03
Speaker 6: in the background that makes it super easy for employers
5:06
Speaker 6: to do it and make sure that the providers are
5:10
Speaker 6: getting paid on time so that they can continue to
5:13
Speaker 6: operate their businesses.
5:15
Speaker 3: So how much work has gone into this and what
5:18
Speaker 3: does it take to put together, Jason, a model like this, Well.
5:25
Speaker 6: The model itself originated in Michigan a few years ago
5:31
Speaker 6: and it has since also we now see it happening
5:34
Speaker 6: in Kentucky, North Carolina, so the model is there. Our
5:40
Speaker 6: job is to work with the Small Business Development Center
5:45
Speaker 6: and a variety of different partners around the state, the
5:47
Speaker 6: Chamber of Commerce, the Charleston Area Alliance, et cetera, to
5:50
Speaker 6: figure out how do we take that model and adapt
5:53
Speaker 6: it here to West Virginia. And so we've just started
5:59
Speaker 6: to do this. We're just starting to put sort of
6:01
Speaker 6: all the pieces in place, but it is, it is live,
6:05
Speaker 6: and we are bringing on our first employers and our
6:08
Speaker 6: first providers, and the first employees are benefiting from those
6:14
Speaker 6: contributions and those matching funds. They're benefiting right now.
6:18
Speaker 3: Sright to begin with with Jason Moss, Let's get back
6:22
Speaker 3: to this term childcare deserts. As I said at the top, Jason,
6:27
Speaker 3: you hear that term thrown out there a lot, and
6:29
Speaker 3: I don't think you.
6:31
Speaker 5: Know, it's easy for us.
6:32
Speaker 3: I'm sitting in the studio in Charleston, West Virginia right now,
6:35
Speaker 3: and those that are listening to us, primarily in the
6:37
Speaker 3: Kanal Valley, we don't have enough childcare. But what we
6:41
Speaker 3: do okay here, Okay, I mean, I'm just kind of
6:44
Speaker 3: throwing it out there. Maybe I'm wrong, but you start
6:46
Speaker 3: getting into some of these other areas to say, to
6:48
Speaker 3: West Virginia, some of the smaller counties, and I'm not
6:51
Speaker 3: you know, we're not gonna pick on any but I'm
6:53
Speaker 3: just throwing some of the small counties out there. Maybe
6:55
Speaker 3: a Work County or a Clay County or some of
6:58
Speaker 3: these other counties. I'm going to go ahead and imagine
7:01
Speaker 3: that that's kind of where you're looking at when you
7:03
Speaker 3: talk about childcare deserts.
7:07
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's that's that's you're you're exactly right. I mean,
7:10
Speaker 6: the childcare desert is where the need for care far
7:12
Speaker 6: exceeds the available providers. And and here's the here's the
7:17
Speaker 6: challenge is that it's it's it's often a very unrealistic
7:23
Speaker 6: solution to say we're going to build a brand new center. Uh.
7:28
Speaker 6: In these communities, it's just the cost is too high,
7:32
Speaker 6: the population density is there's not it's too low. But
7:37
Speaker 6: what you can do, what's often overlooked is a very
7:39
Speaker 6: creative solution is what's called family childcare or in home childcare.
7:44
Speaker 6: And that's where entrepreneurial individuals say, hey, I can open
7:49
Speaker 6: up where I live and run a childcare program in
7:53
Speaker 6: my house. Uh. And it's all licensed, that follows the
7:57
Speaker 6: state regulations, et cetera. But it is a much easier, way,
8:02
Speaker 6: faster way to create childcare. It helps individuals work and
8:07
Speaker 6: earn a great living, and it can be very targeted
8:10
Speaker 6: to those areas where childcare is needed most and part
8:14
Speaker 6: of what Wonder School is also doing in the state,
8:17
Speaker 6: not only launching the Treasure program I mentioned, but we're
8:20
Speaker 6: also sort of working locally to help to create more
8:25
Speaker 6: in home family childcare.
8:27
Speaker 5: It's a fascinating concept. I mean, it really is.
8:30
Speaker 3: And when you talk about West Virginia's low workforce participation,
8:36
Speaker 3: invariably somebody will reach out to me. I'll get a
8:38
Speaker 3: text or something like that, and somebody will say something
8:40
Speaker 3: to the effect of, well, we're also the oldest state
8:42
Speaker 3: in the nation, and I completely understand that. Usually when
8:45
Speaker 3: you're talking about low workforce participation, Jason, you're talking about
8:49
Speaker 3: able bodied people that just for one reason or another
8:53
Speaker 3: don't work. Childcare is an issue, whatever, that's what we're
8:57
Speaker 3: talking about here primarily, right.
9:00
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's that's that's exactly right. That's exactly right, and
9:03
Speaker 6: we want and we want it for those individuals. We
9:07
Speaker 6: want to eliminate the very painful decision to say, hey,
9:11
Speaker 6: I would love to be working, but the economics don't
9:15
Speaker 6: make sense for me to work or for me to
9:18
Speaker 6: stay at my job because I have to deal with childcare.
9:21
Speaker 6: I have to have a solution in place, and so
9:24
Speaker 6: if through try share and creating more you know, more
9:28
Speaker 6: in home programs, we can we can eliminate reduce that
9:32
Speaker 6: very painful decision. That's a win for everybody. That's a
9:35
Speaker 6: win for the parents. That's a win for those providers
9:42
Speaker 6: because they're going to see more business. It's a win
9:44
Speaker 6: for employers because it helps them to recruit talent, it
9:47
Speaker 6: helps them to repain talent, and that's a win for
9:49
Speaker 6: the state.
9:51
Speaker 3: A quick reminderre your vaccines or your best protection to
9:53
Speaker 3: get severe disease from fluid COVID nineteen if you're sixty
9:56
Speaker 3: five or older, risk lass do more with this season's vaccines.
9:59
Speaker 3: Get started vanks scenes dot gov paid for by the
10:01
Speaker 3: US Department of Health and Human Services. All Right, I'm
10:03
Speaker 3: gonna give you a scenario here, Jason, Okay, I am
10:06
Speaker 3: going to start.
10:07
Speaker 5: I have a company.
10:09
Speaker 3: Uh and off the top of my head, we're gonna
10:11
Speaker 3: call it Jones and Jones.
10:12
Speaker 5: That's the name of the company. Okay. Uh. I want
10:15
Speaker 5: to get involved in this.
10:16
Speaker 3: I need people and I and what I'm hearing when
10:19
Speaker 3: I interview people is I would love to take the job,
10:21
Speaker 3: but I can't do it because childcare is an issue.
10:24
Speaker 3: As an employer, what can take us through the process
10:28
Speaker 3: of how that would work, because it's a multifaceted as
10:30
Speaker 3: you said, So take us through.
10:32
Speaker 5: I'm an employer, lay it out for us. How does
10:34
Speaker 5: it work?
10:35
Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm I'm I'm at Jones and Jones, And what
10:39
Speaker 6: I'm going to do is say, all right, for for
10:41
Speaker 6: for my employees, I'm gonna make it. I'm gonna let
10:45
Speaker 6: every I'm gonna let them know that I'm going to
10:48
Speaker 6: contribute one hundred dollars two hundred dollars a month towards
10:52
Speaker 6: their towards their childcare, and the state is going to
10:56
Speaker 6: match that based on that family's annual householding them and
11:01
Speaker 6: therefore that individual is now going to be saving two
11:06
Speaker 6: hundred dollars three hundred dollars four hundred dollars a month
11:10
Speaker 6: on their childcare, which over the course of a year
11:12
Speaker 6: is very significant. So that's the promise and the commitment
11:17
Speaker 6: that Jones and Jones can make to employees or or
11:22
Speaker 6: future employees people are trying to recruit operationally, it's as
11:27
Speaker 6: simple as going to Wonder School, dot com forward slashed
11:31
Speaker 6: West Virginia dash trishare and it is a very quick
11:36
Speaker 6: application process. You essentially fill out a brief application. You
11:41
Speaker 6: let us know that you want to participate. We follow
11:46
Speaker 6: up with you. We then ask you to let us
11:50
Speaker 6: know what employees or employees and how much you're going
11:53
Speaker 6: to contribute for a month. We validate with them the
11:55
Speaker 6: household income. We talk to the provider where the child
11:59
Speaker 6: will be going, We get them signed up, and then
12:02
Speaker 6: we sort of and then you just we set up
12:04
Speaker 6: that the there's a monthly department essentially debit need and
12:08
Speaker 6: it's as easy as that. You can then sort of
12:10
Speaker 6: step back and know that your employee employees are being
12:13
Speaker 6: benefited through this program.
12:16
Speaker 5: It's fascinating.
12:16
Speaker 3: It's a fascinating concept and I was doing some reading
12:19
Speaker 3: about it last night. A fascinating concept and a fascinating
12:21

Speaker 8: sky's clear.
16:59
Speaker 13: You did a yeah, and Magnuson was there, Jason Young
17:04
Speaker 13: and Nlita Sanchez.
17:05
Speaker 8: We had a great time.
17:06
Speaker 13: But that was our first event that kicked everything off,
17:08
Speaker 13: and that was celebrating the tenth year of three things,
17:11
Speaker 13: so ten seasons under our belt. As part of festival tonight,
17:16
Speaker 13: we will continue everything with a community drum circle down
17:19
Speaker 13: at Hadad Riverfront Park at six pm. And we also
17:22
Speaker 13: have a cool thing called live music Bingo thanks to
17:24
Speaker 13: Arts Amplified here in Charleston, which we'll start at seven
17:27
Speaker 13: pm at five Street Brewing and Shane Mead will be
17:30
Speaker 13: the performer there tonight.
17:32
Speaker 5: So give us the whole concept behind festival.
17:34
Speaker 3: I mean, because we hear it's one of those things
17:36
Speaker 3: in Charleston, you know, along with Regatta and we had
17:39
Speaker 3: all these things going on. You hear it thrown out there,
17:40
Speaker 3: But what was the concept behind fest?
17:42
Speaker 8: Of all the concept behind festival.
17:45
Speaker 13: So a few heavy hitters here, Larry Gross being one
17:48
Speaker 13: of them, who you all are probably familiar through Mountain stage,
17:54
Speaker 13: Daniel Jones and Vic Grigaracci, they all got together and said, hey,
17:58
Speaker 13: we need something like Sple, which is in Charleston, South Carolina.
18:02
Speaker 13: It's a major arts festival, multi day, multi media, everything
18:07
Speaker 13: you could possibly imagine, and they wanted to build that
18:09
Speaker 13: up here in Charleston, West Virginia. And so they thought
18:13
Speaker 13: that you know, wine and jazz was happening. They build
18:16
Speaker 13: everything around that, and they wanted to create this event
18:19
Speaker 13: where everyone could access the arts, maybe not necessarily in
18:23
Speaker 13: a building, but outside for free, so it's accessible to everyone.
18:27
Speaker 13: And it grew from a three day festival all the
18:29
Speaker 13: way to a fifteen day festival on our fifteenth year.
18:32
Speaker 13: But now that we're back in our or now that
18:34
Speaker 13: we're approaching our twenty first year, we're scaling things back
18:37
Speaker 13: to go back to the basics and really focus on
18:38
Speaker 13: what festival does well.
18:39
Speaker 3: And I love the fact when you talk about the
18:41
Speaker 3: arts again, that you're not there's various ways for people
18:45
Speaker 3: to enjoy arts, and you're not necessarily going to look
18:48
Speaker 3: at it in a quote unquote museum right now.
18:50
Speaker 5: Is anything wrong with that?
18:51
Speaker 3: But you're actually you're actually outside for the most part,
18:53
Speaker 3: and you're actually being able to take part in all these.
18:55
Speaker 8: Yeah, live music, theater, dance.
18:57
Speaker 13: You are able to enjoy those in theaters, and we
18:59
Speaker 13: do have ticket at events when you're in the Clay Center,
19:02
Speaker 13: which is a state of the art performance center, or
19:04
Speaker 13: you can walk down the Carriage Trail and enjoy.
19:05
Speaker 8: Those same things in a much different atmosphere.
19:08
Speaker 3: Talking Toboli, Richard's about festival to Day of Island show

19:18
Speaker 3: EA didn't pick up or get delivery by going to
19:20
Speaker 3: Husbandsizza dot com and put you on the spot here, Mallorr,
19:22
Speaker 3: what's your favorite part.
19:24
Speaker 8: Part of festivals?
19:26
Speaker 13: I may be biased because I've been the producer of
19:29
Speaker 13: this thing for a while, but it's the Capitol Street
19:31
Speaker 13: Art Fair. It's one of the biggest events of festival,
19:34
Speaker 13: and we have artists from all over both locally, regionally
19:38
Speaker 13: out of state that come in. We have over sixty
19:41
Speaker 13: five artists that will join us this year. There's live
19:44
Speaker 13: music and performance stage stages at the Children's Art Fair
19:47
Speaker 13: by the Library. Also in front of Taylor Books, roaming
19:51
Speaker 13: street performers. It's a very all encompassing festival experience.
19:55
Speaker 3: Well for what it's worth. Someone just texted and said
19:57
Speaker 3: that's their favorite part too.
19:58
Speaker 8: Oh awesome. We love that.
20:00
Speaker 5: There you go, there you go.
20:02
Speaker 3: And for the people. I mean, let's talk about I'm
20:05
Speaker 3: the ultimate capitalist. I'm always talking about money and bringing
20:09
Speaker 3: people in. We just came off of the bike event
20:11
Speaker 3: in Charleston, which was absolutely huge.
20:13
Speaker 5: We got regatta coming.
20:14
Speaker 3: Up this weekend, among the other things. We got a
20:17
Speaker 3: bunch of people. I know it's not Charleston, but it's
20:19
Speaker 3: the Kanaal Valley. We got all these people, which we're
20:20
Speaker 3: going to talk about in our next segment, coming in
20:22
Speaker 3: from literally all over the country for this pickleball event
20:25
Speaker 3: in Nitro. We got to Charlie West Music Festival going on.
20:29
Speaker 3: I mean, the thing I like about all these things,
20:31
Speaker 3: and I know it's all about art, okay, but it
20:33
Speaker 3: also puts heads and beds, and it also puts money.
20:36
Speaker 5: In the till you.
20:36
Speaker 13: Took the words out of my mind, Heads and Beds
20:39
Speaker 13: Festival has an annual average income or what am I
20:46
Speaker 13: trying to say here, one point.
20:47
Speaker 5: Eight million dollars economic impact.
20:49
Speaker 13: Our impact is one point eight million dollars, which is
20:51
Speaker 13: over double our budget. So if you're thinking about money
20:54
Speaker 13: coming in to us to produce these things and money
20:57
Speaker 13: coming into the city to enjoy these things, it's well
21:01
Speaker 13: worth your time if you are a supporter of festival.
21:04
Speaker 3: And it looks like at least today we're going to
21:06
Speaker 3: get a little bit of a break and all this
21:07
Speaker 3: rain that we've had, oh yeah, right now, we're just
21:09
Speaker 3: trying to get people into Charleston. Because I don't know
21:11
Speaker 3: if you follow this story or not, but there was
21:14
Speaker 3: and I understand it's getting better. There was a traffic
21:16
Speaker 3: issue coming on I sixty four into Charleston today. I
21:19
Speaker 3: drove over it literally because there was gravel all over
21:22
Speaker 3: the interstate and I thought to myself, Okay, well there's
21:24
Speaker 3: there's gravel, and I'm like, and I'm driving over it.
21:27
Speaker 3: But they did shut down the interstate for a while.
21:30
Speaker 5: Because of that.
21:30
Speaker 3: But I do believe that they're starting to get back
21:33
Speaker 3: to normally.
21:33
Speaker 5: That's what I heard Jeff say in the news.
21:35
Speaker 3: And we are going to get a little bit of
21:37
Speaker 3: a break they tell us from the rain today. But
21:38
Speaker 3: it looks like tomorrow we got more rain back in
21:40
Speaker 3: the forecast. So where is the best place though for
21:44
Speaker 3: people to learn more and get and then because there's
21:47
Speaker 3: so many things Mallory that are going on, what's the
21:50
Speaker 3: best spot to go to so people can just get
21:52
Speaker 3: a schedule.
21:53
Speaker 13: The best spot to get the schedule is online at
21:56
Speaker 13: festival Charleston dot com, which is Fest of All with
21:58
Speaker 13: two l's. You can also so go to one of
22:00
Speaker 13: your local businesses Taylor Books, five Street Brewing. They all
22:04
Speaker 13: have our printed schedules where everything is in there. I
22:08
Speaker 13: will say the drum circle tonight at six pm used
22:10
Speaker 13: to be at Slack Plaza, but we had to change
22:13
Speaker 13: the location there. It'll be at how Ad Riverfront Park tonight.
22:15
Speaker 3: I also don't want to forget that we have live
22:18
Speaker 3: on the levee.
22:19
Speaker 8: So yeah, we're so excited.
22:21
Speaker 13: Nobs Brass Band so incredible Magnolia Boulevard there bluegrass band
22:25
Speaker 13: and Nobs Brass Band is obviously a giant brass band,
22:29
Speaker 13: lots of high energy.
22:30
Speaker 8: It's a great time.
22:31
Speaker 3: We also have this schedules available here in our studios.
22:34
Speaker 3: I am told from sales weasel extraordinary.
22:36
Speaker 8: Bobby Sprye, I did see those upstairs.

22:39
Speaker 3: Eleven eleven Virginia Street. You can stop Bier Studio during
22:41
Speaker 3: business hours and pick one up if you'd like to.
22:44
Speaker 3: Before we let you go, I want to talk about
22:45
Speaker 3: the buy in from the businesses here in Charleston, because
22:48
Speaker 3: without the businesses getting involved in this and saying we
22:51
Speaker 3: love this, it ain't happening.
22:53
Speaker 5: Talk about that we have.
22:56
Speaker 13: So Fest of All is a group effort. Teamwork makes
22:58
Speaker 13: the dream work. We get some from everyone all over
23:01
Speaker 13: the city. And like I said, our economic impact is
23:04
Speaker 13: pretty large compared to what we are spending on our end.
23:08
Speaker 13: I've talked to a few local businesses on Capitol Street.
23:12
Speaker 13: They say that during festival they sometimes make more money
23:16
Speaker 13: during festival than they do during the holiday season. So,
23:19
Speaker 13: especially with the Capitol Street Art Fair, people are spending
23:21
Speaker 13: time downtown. They're not just going to our events, but
23:24
Speaker 13: they're also visiting these businesses.
23:26
Speaker 3: All right, yeah, again, there's a We've got schedules available here,
23:30
Speaker 3: they're available online.
23:31

Speaker 3: Imagine if we as a society just let children suffer
27:55
Speaker 3: because their parents are crappy and we're too stingy to
27:57
Speaker 3: use taxes to help them. Let's talk a little pickleball.
28:01
Speaker 3: We'll go for we transition from one to the other.
28:04
Speaker 3: Johnny Rutherford to see it for Metro nine one one.
28:06
Speaker 3: How you doing, man?
28:07
Speaker 4: Good?
28:07
Speaker 5: How are you retired now?
28:08
Speaker 9: Right?
28:08
Speaker 4: I am retired. I'm still helping Metro out with a
28:10
Speaker 4: pickleball tournament. We got some great pros in and a
28:12
Speaker 4: great tournament, right all right?
28:13
Speaker 5: So what are you doing other than playing pickleball in
28:15
Speaker 5: your retirement?
28:16
Speaker 4: I got a great wife and we spent a lot
28:18
Speaker 4: of time taking walks, a little bit of golf and
28:21
Speaker 4: taking care of family.
28:21
Speaker 5: How long were you How long were you there?
28:24
Speaker 4: Well, with the county for forty six.
28:26
Speaker 5: Ye years in various role sheriff and so on and
28:28
Speaker 5: so on.
28:28
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's sheriff for thirty some years now with Metro
28:30
Speaker 4: for twelve.
28:31
Speaker 3: Okay, and we're getting ready for this big pickleball event
28:35
Speaker 3: in Nitro. And you've been on several times over the
28:38
Speaker 3: last couple of years talking about this and to use
28:41
Speaker 3: the average advertising cliche.
28:42
Speaker 5: It does get bigger and better every year.
28:44
Speaker 4: It's great. The Nitro has done a great job. They
28:46
Speaker 4: put a great facility in for us. I have a
28:48
Speaker 4: lot of team people that help us put this tournament on.
28:51
Speaker 4: It's grown every year. We're up to almost three hundred
28:53
Speaker 4: people this year. We've got some great pros coming in.
28:56
Speaker 4: It's just great. And one thing we want to make sure,
28:58
Speaker 4: I want to say before we get started here is
29:00
Speaker 4: it's free. We have some great players, some of the
29:03
Speaker 4: best in the country, in the world come into play,
29:05
Speaker 4: and we want to make sure people come down, enjoy themselves,
29:08
Speaker 4: walk around and watch his play is really exciting.
29:10
Speaker 3: And pickleball itself, I mean again, people have heard you
29:12
Speaker 3: talking about it, and we're going to talk to some
29:14
Speaker 3: pros that are here, but describe pickleball.
29:17
Speaker 5: To people that may not understand it complete.
29:19
Speaker 4: I'm as Susannah, Okay, she is the pro and she
29:22
Speaker 4: has been playing. He's great at this, all.
29:24
Speaker 3: Right, Susanna Barr. And you've been on the show before,
29:26
Speaker 3: but you were always on the phone. This first time,
29:27
Speaker 3: I think we've had you in person. I think yes, yeah.
29:29
Speaker 17: Last year I called in from Idaho, which is where
29:32
Speaker 17: I live.
29:33
Speaker 12: Uh, huh.
29:34
Speaker 17: But now we're here, we're going to be running some
29:36
Speaker 17: clinics today and then obviously playing this weekend.
29:39
Speaker 12: But yeah, pickleball is.
29:40
Speaker 17: A combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. I heard
29:45
Speaker 17: one person say once it was like, you're playing ping pong,
29:47
Speaker 17: but you're standing on the.
29:48
Speaker 3: Table, okay, which is generally frowned upon in most most
29:52
Speaker 3: most establishments. Now we have Dominicque Catalano. I pronounce that right, Dominique.
29:57
Speaker 3: Let's h what's your love of pickaball? What's your story?
30:01
Speaker 3: What's your story?
30:01
Speaker 18: Oh gosh, so I've been in pickaball for twenty four
30:04
Speaker 18: years now. I started in pick a ball in two
30:05
Speaker 18: thousand and one. I was a high school pe and
30:07
Speaker 18: health teacher in suburbs of Chicago. But I also to
30:10
Speaker 18: live in Boise, Idaho now and I work for the
30:14
Speaker 18: Association of Pickleball Players the app Professional Pickleball Tour. I
30:18
Speaker 18: do the commentary and work with ESPN and CBS Sports
30:21
Speaker 18: as the playby or color analyst for those networks and
30:25
Speaker 18: for the pro Tour.
30:27
Speaker 5: So how does one prepare for do? I mean?
30:29
Speaker 3: I've done some play by play in color commentary on
30:31
Speaker 3: various sports I've never done pickleball, how do you imagine
30:34
Speaker 3: the preparation is about the same, isn't it.
30:36
Speaker 5: It's pretty much the same.
30:37
Speaker 18: I have had pros asked me if I would step
30:40
Speaker 18: away from my iPad so that they could see my
30:43
Speaker 18: scouting reports on players, and I refuse to do that,
30:45
Speaker 18: but pretty much the exact same thing. I prep the same.
30:49
Speaker 18: I watch a lot of pickleball when I'm not on
30:52
Speaker 18: the venue and on site, so I have a lot
30:54
Speaker 18: of notes and a lot of scouting reports on probably
30:57
Speaker 18: over two hundred players.
30:58
Speaker 3: I want to talk about, if we could, the growth
31:03
Speaker 3: of pickleball and how it has become so popular. Johnny
31:07
Speaker 3: and I've been talking about this for the last couple
31:08
Speaker 3: of years, and Sarah, I mean this, I don't know
31:12
Speaker 3: what there has been a sport or an activity or
31:15
Speaker 3: for some people, it's a hobby. For you, guys, it's
31:17
Speaker 3: your life that has grown ass as quickly as what
31:22
Speaker 3: pickleball has. I mean, people just can't get enough of.
31:25
Speaker 12: It, that's true.
31:26
Speaker 17: I mean it's so it's easy to learn, it's hard
31:29
Speaker 17: to master, but it's just a lot of fun. And
31:32
Speaker 17: I think that's the biggest appeal is you can go
31:34
Speaker 17: out and play with your grandparents, you can play with
31:37
Speaker 17: your friends. You laugh a lot. Now there might not
31:42
Speaker 17: be as much laughing in a tournament. People are are
31:46
Speaker 17: there to win and do their best, but overall it's
31:49
Speaker 17: just a really fun game and it's just a great
31:52
Speaker 17: way to be social and healthy and get some exercise.
31:56
Speaker 17: And so, you know, we love it. We've been playing
31:59
Speaker 17: for a lot time and we still love it.
32:01
Speaker 3: And Nitro has just done such a great job John,
32:05
Speaker 3: in kind of becoming the pickleball capital of not only
32:10
Speaker 3: of West Virginia, but I mean literally, man, I mean
32:12
Speaker 3: like this probably this part of the country.
32:14
Speaker 4: They've done a great job. It's covered nine great courts,
32:17
Speaker 4: indoors and outdoor courts. We have people coming from fifteen
32:21
Speaker 4: different states to play in this tournament this year, so
32:24
Speaker 4: it's encompassed in the area without you know, outside of
32:28
Speaker 4: West Virginia and all the way to Idaho. And we
32:30
Speaker 4: have quite a few pros coming in this year from
32:32
Speaker 4: home over the country.
32:33
Speaker 5: And you always are really good.
32:34
Speaker 3: And Sarah, I know you've done this in the past
32:36
Speaker 3: about about offering these clinics where you I mean, it's.
32:40
Speaker 5: Not in John and I talked about it.
32:41
Speaker 3: I think when you were on the phone with us
32:43
Speaker 3: last year, we said, this is the equivalent to saying,
32:47
Speaker 3: I want to be a golfer and I'm taking lessons
32:52
Speaker 3: a few years ago from Tiger Woods. You know, I'm
32:56
Speaker 3: gonna I'm gonna learn. I'm gonna learn basketball, and I'm
32:58
Speaker 3: gonna learn it from Michael Jordan. I'm gonna learn from
33:00
Speaker 3: Lebron or somebody like that.
33:01
Speaker 4: We call Susannah the Michael Jordan's Michelow.
33:04
Speaker 5: That's a that's a pretty big title. Susannah. You good
33:06
Speaker 5: with them?
33:07
Speaker 12: Oh, I mean it's kind of become an ongoing joke.
33:10
Speaker 17: And part of the joke is is it the MJ
33:13
Speaker 17: So is it Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson.
33:14
Speaker 12: We don't really have But no, it's super fun.
33:18
Speaker 17: Last year, you guys made me a huge banner and
33:21
Speaker 17: it's hanging in my garage. I have to see it
33:23
Speaker 17: every day when I drive in at the Michael Jordan
33:26
Speaker 17: or the MJ of Peockleball.
33:27
Speaker 5: I put it up the day we moved in.
33:29
Speaker 17: But no, I mean, yeah, you know, we love coaching,
33:32
Speaker 17: and so we're excited to be able to come back
33:33
Speaker 17: here and share some of our knowledge with the players
33:36
Speaker 17: and just help grow everybody as players, and we try
33:41
Speaker 17: to make it a lot of fun as well. And
33:42
Speaker 17: then we'll be around to you know, the players that
33:45
Speaker 17: take our clinic, we'll be there watching their matches all
33:46
Speaker 17: week and two, putting a little pressure on them.
33:49
Speaker 3: But Dave Island showing five any Live is broad to
33:50
Speaker 3: you in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston
33:53
Speaker 3: Dirty Birds. Tonight the Birds entertaining high point another Thirsty
33:56
Speaker 3: Thursday with one dollar beers and water starting at five thirty.
33:59
Speaker 3: For more, visit dirty Birds baseball dot com or check
34:01
Speaker 3: out their social media. So when you are instructing these people,
34:06
Speaker 3: what are some of the things either one of you,
34:08
Speaker 3: because I know you do this well, what are some
34:09
Speaker 3: of the things that how does that work? I mean,
34:12
Speaker 3: do you just one on one? Do you do it
34:14
Speaker 3: in groups? Combination of both?
34:15
Speaker 18: So it's kind of a combination of both. Depends on
34:17
Speaker 18: what the area we're going to, because we do this
34:19
Speaker 18: all over the country, so it depends on the area
34:22
Speaker 18: what they're looking for. Mostly we do groups, and we'll
34:24
Speaker 18: do clinics where we'll have eight to sixteen people and
34:27
Speaker 18: we bounce back and forth from court to court. Sometimes
34:30
Speaker 18: we'll do what we call three and me's or play
34:32
Speaker 18: with a pro where I'll play or Susannah will play
34:35
Speaker 18: and they'll have three other amateurs and we'll play points
34:38
Speaker 18: with them. And a lot of times they'll have us
34:40
Speaker 18: come in and do some private lessons where you want
34:42
Speaker 18: a one on one lesson. So it all kind of
34:44
Speaker 18: depends on the area, what the people are looking for,
34:46
Speaker 18: what they want. But we've been doing this for so
34:49
Speaker 18: long it's a lot of it's rinse and repeat, But
34:51
Speaker 18: when we come back to places multiple times, it's got
34:54
Speaker 18: to keep changing it up. So we're doing a clinic
34:57
Speaker 18: from one to three today and then three to from
35:01
Speaker 18: five to seven in the evening for you know, the
35:03
Speaker 18: working class people that have to work and can't get
35:05
Speaker 18: off in the middle.
35:06
Speaker 5: Of the day, people that aren't retired exactly. Not mentioning
35:08
Speaker 5: any name.
35:09
Speaker 18: Not mentioning any names in the studio, but yeah, so
35:11
Speaker 18: we're doing that in the evening. One is a tournament
35:14
Speaker 18: prep clinic where a lot of the players are coming
35:16
Speaker 18: with their partner and so we'll get them into you know,
35:18
Speaker 18: what it takes to play in a tournament, kind of
35:20
Speaker 18: that mindset aspect of it as well.
35:23
Speaker 3: Talk about the tournament mindset a little bit, and when
35:26
Speaker 3: when you folks are entering tournaments and things of that nature,
35:29
Speaker 3: because obviously this is a fun sport. It's just like golf.
35:32
Speaker 3: I mean, you know it's a it's a fun sport,
35:35
Speaker 3: but it's also ultra competitive. You said that earlier about
35:38
Speaker 3: how you laugh and joke until it's tournament time and
35:40
Speaker 3: then it's serious biz.
35:41
Speaker 12: Right, Yeah, absolutely.
35:44
Speaker 17: I mean, you know, the Nitro Tournament, the Metro Tournament
35:47
Speaker 17: has a great prize pool. It is twenty thousand dollars
35:50
Speaker 17: this year. I mean that's quite a bit of money.
35:52
Speaker 17: So we're all you know, that's.
35:54
Speaker 5: Why you get people coming from all these different states.
35:56
Speaker 3: How many states you say, John, fifteen different states, fifteen
35:58
Speaker 3: different stats are coming in for this, but go ahead.
35:59
Speaker 17: Yeah, so we have our eyes on the prize.
36:02
Speaker 12: But you know, we definitely prep ahead of time.
36:05
Speaker 17: I mean, the pros that are coming in have been
36:07
Speaker 17: scouring the list to see which players are coming.
36:09
Speaker 12: So we have our own notes. We're studying their.
36:11
Speaker 17: Games, having some game plans about what we're going to
36:14
Speaker 17: be doing against our competitors, how we want to play.
36:18
Speaker 12: It was nice that we got out yesterday.
36:20
Speaker 17: Got here a little early and we're able to hit
36:22
Speaker 17: because in fact, the conditions are different everywhere you go.
36:25
Speaker 17: The way the ball bounces is different depending on where
36:27
Speaker 17: you go. The humidity affects the game as well, So
36:31
Speaker 17: kind of having a little bit of time to make
36:32
Speaker 17: some of those adjustments that we need to make to
36:34
Speaker 17: our game. Yeah, I mean we take it seriously. It
36:38
Speaker 17: is for the pros it is there. For most of them,
36:41
Speaker 17: it's their career and so they want to come out
36:43
Speaker 17: and play their absolute best. But on top of that,
36:46
Speaker 17: all the amateurs are out there. It's their chance to
36:49
Speaker 17: shine as well, and so you know, just for them,
36:52
Speaker 17: they're going to be having those mental talks with their partners.
36:55
Speaker 17: How do we you know, communicate with each other, how
36:58
Speaker 17: are we successful on the court, how we support each other,
37:01
Speaker 17: and so all of that goes into play, just like
37:04
Speaker 17: any sport.
37:05
Speaker 3: Also, I do want to throw this out there. Per
37:07
Speaker 3: friend of the Show Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro,
37:10
Speaker 3: there is a ribbon cutting at the city's new indoor
37:13
Speaker 3: pickleball complex as part of the Nitro Athletic Complex that's
37:16
Speaker 3: set for tomorrow at eleven thirty at the Athletic Complex
37:19
Speaker 3: sixteen fifty Park Avenue in Nitro, So I told Joe
37:22
Speaker 3: I would definitely get that on there.
37:23
Speaker 4: In the season, and the tournament will start right after
37:26
Speaker 4: that at noon with the singles division.
37:30
Speaker 3: Before we let you get what's your all impressions of
37:32
Speaker 3: West Virginia.
37:33
Speaker 18: Oh my gosh, Like last year, we didn't know what
37:36
Speaker 18: to expect coming here. As soon as we land. We
37:38
Speaker 18: were talking on the way here. When you land at
37:40
Speaker 18: the airport in Charleston, you look like you're coming in
37:43
Speaker 18: and going to land on top of the trees. And
37:46
Speaker 18: last year we were coming in, We're like, is there
37:48
Speaker 18: a runway or are we just gonna land on the
37:49
Speaker 18: top of the trees, And then all of a sudden,
37:51
Speaker 18: the runway comes out of nowhere. And so this year
37:53
Speaker 18: we anticipated it. We were watching it, but you know
37:55
Speaker 18: last year and then coming in this year, as soon
37:57
Speaker 18: as we get here, it's almost like a breath of
38:00
Speaker 18: fresh air. Everyone here, from John and and and Matt
38:04
Speaker 18: and everyone who runs the tournament, and how they host
38:07
Speaker 18: us and how they've kind of reached out to us
38:10
Speaker 18: and taken care of us is above and beyond what
38:13
Speaker 18: we can expect. And it was, you know, last year
38:16
Speaker 18: we came here and we're like, Okay, you know we're
38:18
Speaker 18: gonna go this year and we'll see before we left,
38:20
Speaker 18: we went to lunch when you guys dropped us off
38:22
Speaker 18: at the airport last year, and we looked and we're like,
38:25
Speaker 18: just tell us what the date is next year, we'll
38:27
Speaker 18: be here. But it's just it's just so nice. It's
38:29
Speaker 18: refreshing and pickleball to have an event that does have
38:32
Speaker 18: a good prize pool, but it also gets that old
38:35
Speaker 18: school pickleball feeling where it's a community.
38:38
Speaker 4: Yeah.
38:38
Speaker 3: And uh and we're kind of welcoming sorts here in
38:41
Speaker 3: West Virginia. We we like to we like to have company,
38:43
Speaker 3: as as my grandma would say.
38:46
Speaker 6: Uh.
38:46
Speaker 3: And hopefully while you're here, you'll get to visit tutors
38:48
Speaker 3: and you'll get to you get you some uh, get
38:51
Speaker 3: your Pepperoni role while you're here as well. Make make
38:53
Speaker 3: sure because I know you guys train, but you know
38:56
Speaker 3: you gotta have there's got to be room for Mary
38:57
Speaker 3: b every now.
38:58
Speaker 5: They've got to have those cheap days. Yeah, exactly, John,
39:02
Speaker 5: go ahead.
39:02
Speaker 4: I just want to thank them for coming. They've been great.
39:06
Speaker 4: They're great people. Not they're great pickleball players, but beyond that,
39:09
Speaker 4: they're great people. I want to thank the City of Nitro.
39:11
Speaker 4: I want to thank the Metro nine one one employees
39:13
Speaker 4: who save lives every day. All of our sponsors and
39:16
Speaker 4: especially Ohio Valley Bank and three or four at Valley
39:19
Speaker 4: Point are big sponsors. But we want to thank them all.
39:21
Speaker 4: We appreciate it.
39:22
Speaker 3: Yeah, without sponsors, nothing happens, nothing happened, nothing happens. And again,
39:25
Speaker 3: this is a great event for Metro nine.
39:28
Speaker 5: One one as well. We don't want to we don't
39:30
Speaker 5: want to leave that part out.
39:32
Speaker 4: John, Yes, thank you. Yeah, our employees are great employer and.
39:34
Speaker 5: Give us the timeline again.
39:36
Speaker 4: What starts the opening tomorrow is with the city is
39:39
Speaker 4: eleven thirty. Tournament starts at noon and then Saturday and
39:43
Speaker 4: Sunday we have tournament doubles eight to four Saturday and Sunday,
39:47
Speaker 4: maybe even in the six or seven o'clock. So come
39:49
Speaker 4: out and play, like I said, or come out and watch.
39:51
Speaker 4: It's free. It's it's a wonderful time. It's the most
39:54

44:06
Speaker 3: The Judicial Annex. Yeah, we haven't talked about that in
44:09
Speaker 3: a while. So what you got for you know what
44:11
Speaker 3: it was? You remember, Gosh, we've talked about this a
44:14
Speaker 3: few times. Kind of turned in the saga of the
44:16
Speaker 3: Judicial Annex at this point. But it was one of
44:19
Speaker 3: those projects that was very concerning for the County Commission
44:22
Speaker 3: because we didn't really know exactly where the bids were
44:26
Speaker 3: going to come in. You know, we were dealing with
44:28
Speaker 3: a lot of what I've been calling the post COVID
44:31
Speaker 3: construction money that was just flowing in everywhere. So a
44:34
Speaker 3: lot of the contractors were able to come in and
44:35
Speaker 3: just kind of name their own price on Unfortunately, when
44:38
Speaker 3: the bids came in initially back in October twenty twenty four,
44:42
Speaker 3: we were two point eight million dollars over budget, and
44:44
Speaker 3: we tried and tried to work it out with the contractors,
44:46
Speaker 3: simply couldn't and so we made the tough decision to
44:50
Speaker 3: basically break the project up and rebid it, and we're
44:54
Speaker 3: actually we actually reduced the price by five point five
44:57
Speaker 3: million dollars, so we saved five point five million dollars
45:00
Speaker 3: tax payer money by breaking the project project up and
45:04
Speaker 3: rebidding it. So we're officially two point eight million dollars
45:07
Speaker 3: under budget now by doing that.
45:09
Speaker 5: Which is not something you hear very often in the
45:11
Speaker 5: world of government.
45:12
Speaker 20: Man, Well, when the bits came in yesterday and we
45:14
Speaker 20: had five, so we broke it up into floor, so
45:17
Speaker 20: the fifth floor came in around two million dollars, and
45:20
Speaker 20: then we broke it up broke out the first floor remodel,
45:24
Speaker 20: which is much more complex that Prey Construction, who actually
45:29
Speaker 20: is also doing the Shawnee Sports Complex project right now,
45:32
Speaker 20: doing a great job. That came in at eight point
45:34
Speaker 20: one eight million, one hundred and forty six nine to
45:37
Speaker 20: fifty three, which they were the lowest bidders. And so
45:40
Speaker 20: we had five bidders yesterday for the first floor remodel
45:43
Speaker 20: and it ranged from around eight million to twelve million,
45:46
Speaker 20: and Prey was the lowest bidder. And so if you
45:49
Speaker 20: add that to the fifth floor, that comes in around
45:51
Speaker 20: a little over ten million dollars and it was sixteen,
45:55
Speaker 20: so we save five point five million dollars by redoing that.
45:57
Speaker 20: It was it was a gamble, but it paid off
46:00
Speaker 20: nine to fifty three of a day.

46:09
Speaker 3: So take us back through the process. Why do we
46:12
Speaker 3: need a judicial annex to begin with?
46:14
Speaker 20: Well, we needed a remodel of the current annexts because
46:19
Speaker 20: the legislature added additional matterstrates and judges, and we also
46:23
Speaker 20: have wanted upgrade security. So the fifth floor, which is
46:26
Speaker 20: where the additional circuit judge is going to go, was
46:29
Speaker 20: not a very complicated remodel. We just went in and basically,
46:33
Speaker 20: and I'm not saying it was just paint and you know,
46:35
Speaker 20: some flooring, because it was more complex than that, but
46:37
Speaker 20: it was we didn't have to build onto anything but
46:41
Speaker 20: the first floor when you're adding three additional magistrates and
46:45
Speaker 20: staff and courtrooms, and that was a bit more complex.
46:48
Speaker 20: And so that's where the trouble has been as far
46:52
Speaker 20: as the financial issues, because when when the bid first
46:56
Speaker 20: came back it was it was nearly sixteen million dollars.
46:59
Speaker 20: Because they love everything in together. We didn't get a
47:01
Speaker 20: breakdown of the bids. We didn't have that many people
47:05
Speaker 20: bidding on the projects because there was so much again
47:08
Speaker 20: post COVID money was out there and the construction companies
47:12
Speaker 20: could just pick their projects. And now that's kind of
47:15
Speaker 20: drying up and things are a lot more competitive, and
47:18
Speaker 20: so that was what we hoped we would see. That's
47:21
Speaker 20: kind of what we had seen kind of the trend
47:23
Speaker 20: over the last six to eight months. And so when
47:27
Speaker 20: I met with Commissioner Wheeler and I think at that
47:29
Speaker 20: time Commissioner Slotnik, who was sitting in temporarily, we made
47:35
Speaker 20: the tough decision to rebid it. Now it could have
47:37
Speaker 20: come back more, and that was a gamble we were
47:39
Speaker 20: going to have to take, and if that happened, we
47:41
Speaker 20: were going to have to come up with planed C
47:44
Speaker 20: and which was not going to be a very good
47:46
Speaker 20: option potentially, you know, splitting up the annex into two
47:49
Speaker 20: different parts of town. But Plan B worked out and
47:53
Speaker 20: we're happy to report that we say five and a
47:56
Speaker 20: half million dollars to taxpayer money.

48:14
Speaker 3: to this. I'm want to read this to you and said,
48:15
Speaker 3: I asked this yesterday, but think it should be opposed
48:18
Speaker 3: to a county commissioner. A lot of these activities and
48:21
Speaker 3: we were talking about, you know, the different activities going
48:23
Speaker 3: on to the Charleston area.
48:24
Speaker 5: The activities are.
48:25
Speaker 3: Nice, but a lot of us like other things like
48:27
Speaker 3: amusement marks and beach boardwalk parties old Myrtle beach style.
48:31
Speaker 3: Why not bring back the Kenaw County Fair. Possibly hold
48:34
Speaker 3: it at the Shawnee Sports Complex or some of the
48:36
Speaker 3: empty lots at South Ridge. Kind of a beach boardwalk
48:39
Speaker 3: block party on the boulevard or Capitol Street during regatta
48:43
Speaker 3: with things like shag or twist contests, boardwalk game shacks, oldies, music,
48:47
Speaker 3: et cetera.
48:48
Speaker 5: By the way, I'm a gen xer, but the stuff
48:50
Speaker 5: was so much fun, you know what.
48:53
Speaker 20: First of all, we'd looked at bringing back the county
48:55
Speaker 20: Fair and doing at Shawnee. But I do remember those
48:59
Speaker 20: old little beach parties. This was what fifteen plus years ago,
49:04
Speaker 20: but I think it was a charitable organization that did it,
49:06
Speaker 20: but I don't remember which one. And they were a
49:09
Speaker 20: lot of fun. They had bands and you know, the
49:11
Speaker 20: live music and a lot of different things going on.
49:13
Speaker 20: I mean, I like the idea. It's something that I
49:15
Speaker 20: know that the commission Wheelers looked at as well. So yeah,
49:18
Speaker 20: it's not outside the realm of possibility. I think it's
49:20
Speaker 20: probably probably would be a good idea. And now to
49:22
Speaker 20: hold it up the same time as Regatta would be
49:26
Speaker 20: a logistical nightmare.
49:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, we're already bursted at the seams here.
49:31
Speaker 20: Yeah, we would probably need to do it on a
49:32
Speaker 20: weekend when nothing else's schedule.
49:36
Speaker 3: Let's talk about some things going on out at Shawnee.
49:39
Speaker 3: I mean we've got I got an email this morning
49:42
Speaker 3: about a I think there's a ribbon cutting, grid opening
49:45
Speaker 3: something going on.
49:45
Speaker 5: What do you got out there? Yeah? So today we're
49:47
Speaker 5: is it today? Yeah?
49:48
Speaker 20: It's today we're cutting the ribbon at Shawnee on the
49:51
Speaker 20: new playground. And that was that's something that's been in
49:54
Speaker 20: the works for a long time. And you know, those
49:56
Speaker 20: are incredibly expensive, and we appreciate rodnel loftice he donated
50:01
Speaker 20: his time, went out there and tore down the old
50:03
Speaker 20: playground and the County Commission and I forget exactly how
50:07
Speaker 20: much the project costs, but it's it's going to be
50:10
Speaker 20: nice and so it's in the front part of the park.
50:14
Speaker 20: And I know we've had a pretty significant effort over
50:17
Speaker 20: the years trying to upgrade all of our playgrounds. I mean,
50:20
Speaker 20: some of them were simply not safe. You couldn't play
50:22
Speaker 20: on them, and so we were doing that with the
50:24
Speaker 20: Shawnee Sports Complex. That's going to happen today, so if
50:27
Speaker 20: you want to come out and check it out, bring
50:29
Speaker 20: the kids. I think that's at two PM, so we'll
50:31
Speaker 20: be able to to unveil that today. Then in August,
50:36
Speaker 20: we're cutting the ribbon on the new Shawnee Sports Complex
50:39
Speaker 20: Entrance Center, which is about a five million dollar project.
50:44
Speaker 20: Thanks to our US senator's former Senator Mansion Senator Capito
50:49
Speaker 20: and also current Senator former Governor Jim Justice, who helped
50:55
Speaker 20: us get a million dollars. But they help with the
50:58
Speaker 20: tune of about three million dollars and so we wouldn't
51:00
Speaker 20: have been able to build that new building without their help.
51:02
Speaker 5: And we're very apprecive. Chech says it was the Big Brothers,
51:06
Speaker 5: Big sisters, Martle beach back. That's exactly right, that's right.
51:08
Speaker 5: How many that's been a long time ago, but it
51:10
Speaker 5: was a blast.
51:11
Speaker 3: And I do know I'll give a shout out to
51:13
Speaker 3: the CAMC Foundation folks. I know that they have a
51:16
Speaker 3: like a lu al type of event usually every year at
51:18
Speaker 3: the Clay Center or something like that. So Robbie Queen
51:20
Speaker 3: and his folks, so yeah, I always do a great
51:22
Speaker 3: job with that. Before we let you go, any updates
51:24
Speaker 3: on the Capitol Sports Center, you can give.
51:26
Speaker 20: Us, you know, not right now, we're waiting. I know
51:29
Speaker 20: we've each put in some earmark requests the city and
51:32
Speaker 20: the county.
51:34
Speaker 5: You know, hopefully that will go through.
51:36
Speaker 20: I think if if that's in there and Congress passes
51:40
Speaker 20: a budget, then we're back on track.
51:42
Speaker 4: You know.
51:42
Speaker 20: That was that's a big project for the city, for
51:45
Speaker 20: the county, for the entire state, and we've got the
51:48
Speaker 20: right people in place. Hopefully we'll be able to make
51:51
Speaker 20: it happen. And if not, then we'll have to try
51:53
Speaker 20: to scale it back some. But you know, it's just
51:56
Speaker 20: one of those things where it was an unusual turn
51:59
Speaker 20: of events. Believe, when you get an Earmark award, it
52:02
Speaker 20: goes through. This is one of the rare instances where
52:05
Speaker 20: it didn't. And not just ours, it was all over
52:07
Speaker 20: the country, so it's not like, you know, they focused
52:09
Speaker 20: on us.
52:10
Speaker 5: But uh, we're we're hopeful it will. It will happen,
52:14
Speaker 5: all right.
52:14
Speaker 3: We got to leave it there, Ben, I appreciate you
52:16
Speaker 3: being here. Thanks, thanks a lot. Do you want to
