- 0:17Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast.
- 0:20We're on episode 24 and there's no surprises that I'm in the
- 0:24studio with Owen Smith and Dean Menzies, who are both on the
- 0:28back of great race results this weekend.
- 0:32So we'll go firstly to the man who is 12 in Ireland and the
- 0:365000 meters on the back of this weekend.
- 0:38Congratulations, Owen. Thank you very much.
- 0:41Yeah, I was pretty happy with how the race planned out, but
- 0:46there's definitely more room for improvement.
- 0:47But now I was pretty happy with the result with the
- 0:50Mediterranean and I've done and all that sort of stuff, so I
- 0:52can't complain. Yeah, spoiler alert there, but
- 0:55you'll have to hang around to hear about the actual race
- 0:58because he was dancing with the big dogs.
- 1:00That's. Not where he put it.
- 1:03For a. For a laugh or two.
- 1:05Yeah. And the fellow Co host Dean was
- 1:11battling the elements out in Perth on Sunday morning.
- 1:14Believe it or not Owen. There was thunderstorms and
- 1:17weather warnings left, right and centre.
- 1:19Welcome, Dean. Hey guys.
- 1:21I yeah, just an Irish summer's day I think, but it was tough,
- 1:26Tough as far as Perth weather goes.
- 1:28I seen videos of the conditions and I was like Oh my God that is
- 1:33rough. There was, yeah, it was the real
- 1:36chance of it being called off. I think it got delayed.
- 1:40But these are so soft over there.
- 1:42Oh my God. Called.
- 1:45Off Jeannie Mack. Back back me up there, Ryan.
- 1:52Oh, and I don't know what I said to Dean today in England that
- 1:57would have been called off just off the forecast, like forecast
- 2:00storms. They were doing like Nah, fuck
- 2:02that. Really.
- 2:04Yeah, then maybe we're just soft English.
- 2:07Was it income? Go on.
- 2:09You go. Was it that bad?
- 2:11Like because normally if there's a wind blowing like in your face
- 2:14one way, it's going to be on your back of the way back in no
- 2:17so. It was, I think it was like
- 2:19something like 40 to 50K now winds with up to 90 kilometre
- 2:23gusts. But the, I think the wind wasn't
- 2:25the issue. It was, it was lightning.
- 2:27The risk of lightning is an electrical storm.
- 2:30So it was trying to make sure that that had passed.
- 2:34So that's why they they delayed this.
- 2:36We can probably get into it later, but they'd push the start
- 2:39back because of they didn't want.
- 2:42No one wants to get zapped. It wasn't worth getting that.
- 2:46That was that was the main risk. Otherwise, it was game on.
- 2:49Yeah, that's fair. If there's lightning, OK, that's
- 2:52fair enough. Yeah, because no one wants to
- 2:53get zapped. Again, spoiler alert, I let Dean
- 2:58tell the story, but it was the winds were strong enough to blow
- 3:01him into his backside. The thing?
- 3:03Yeah, I fell over but that, but that's all right.
- 3:05All the wrong shoes, to be honest.
- 3:07But you live in your land. Right then before we start the
- 3:11episode off, I think it's fair to say we've maybe got a few new
- 3:15listeners since we kind of last addressed the audience.
- 3:19So yeah, just welcome along guys.
- 3:22And you might gather that we're just kind of winging this, but
- 3:24we're having fun with it and it seems to be somewhat working.
- 3:27So we'll just keep doing what we're doing and hopefully you
- 3:30guys keep tuning in and letting letting us know what you think,
- 3:34regardless of whether you think we talk too much shit or not.
- 3:37Now before we get into the series stuff, I did want to go
- 3:41back to last week's episode where I said that I might get
- 3:45try and get a selfie with the AC Milan players because I've been
- 3:49holding on to this story all week.
- 3:51I've been itching to tell you. But I've kept it for the pod
- 3:54because I was trying to get some pod content in there as well,
- 3:57believe it or not. So me and Becky went down to the
- 4:01Dunner Q&A, fan Q&A events in the casino.
- 4:04And I was like to Becky, Hot Dragon.
- 4:06If I put my hand up and I ask a question, I'll like record it on
- 4:09my phone and we can like clip the audio into the pod.
- 4:13And I was thinking how, how can I ask like professional
- 4:16footballers a question that will be relatable to the pod.
- 4:19So then I was thinking on it loads and I was getting a bit
- 4:22like tense off. And I think Becky's just looking
- 4:25at me like, oh God, he's going to, he's going to actually ask
- 4:27something, isn't he? So they bring out Christian
- 4:31Pulisic who's like their star player, the captain of America,
- 4:35Captain America, captain of the USA, Tamori, who's the English
- 4:40centre half and like a winger, Chuck, Chuck Maisie or
- 4:43something. And the guy says any questions.
- 4:47So like straight away. And then next minute there's a
- 4:51woman who starts walking over with a mic and like I got myself
- 4:54that worked up. I forgot to get my phone out.
- 4:57But I said to him, I guess pre season is a lot about building
- 5:03fitness isn't it? So who would you say has got the
- 5:05best 5K time in the squad? And then they're all they're all
- 5:11looking at each other thinking like, who's going to answer this
- 5:14and how do we answer it? Because we probably never really
- 5:17ran a 5K time trial. And eventually Pula 6 says, oh,
- 5:21you know, there's there's a few different groups of fitness in
- 5:24the squad. Like there's the top guys,
- 5:26there's the next guys and then there's the guys who probably
- 5:29aren't so fit and like the crowd were laughing a little bit and
- 5:33then out of nowhere goes. But you know, we're all probably
- 5:35pretty fit compared to you lot. Oh, little did he.
- 5:41Know well I was like sucker punch because yeah, you probably
- 5:45I am quite unfit right now. All right, just sorry to all the
- 5:49American listeners, but that's such an American answer,
- 5:52thinking, oh, I'm the best. Unfortunately, the woman had
- 5:56walked away with the mic. She should have said, well, one
- 5:59week of your wages said you're not faster than me.
- 6:06It should have moved again. It was cool it.
- 6:07Could have been 1,000,000 bucks. Yeah, or just getting removed by
- 6:11security. But obviously you managed to get
- 6:17a photo. Yeah, I think he sympathized
- 6:20with me enough to stop for a selfie.
- 6:22Was there a good crowd at that? Q&A thing, considering it was
- 6:26free and like the star players were there, it wasn't actually
- 6:29crazy. And then at the actual match
- 6:31itself, the HPF park, what do you reckon the capacity is there
- 6:35Dean? Like 1520 K.
- 6:37Yeah, I was going to sell at 12,000, something like that.
- 6:40Yeah, it was pretty full there. What was the atmosphere like?
- 6:44Because they got the glory, got absolutely pummeled in there.
- 6:47Yeah, it was. The atmosphere was actually
- 6:48quite good, to be fair. And then the Glory fans were
- 6:52almost just like taking the piss out of themselves, ironically
- 6:55singing We've, we've got the ball for like the five seconds
- 6:59that they had there and then when they would lose it, they'd
- 7:01start singing We've lost the ball for like 10 minutes
- 7:03straight. Also, another bit of
- 7:12housekeeping before we get into the running news.
- 7:14You may have seen on Instagram this week that we've created a
- 7:17Strava group. So I'm not really too sure what
- 7:20the purpose of this is going to be, but it might just form part
- 7:23of the pod and we can bring everyone together.
- 7:26Seeing as I guess most of us are running and uploading our
- 7:29results onto Strava anyway. So we might as well get involved
- 7:32in the group there and see the secret monster map, monster
- 7:37mileage, mileage monsters out there.
- 7:39Because there's no worries about being bottom of the leaderboard
- 7:42because I'm going to be on 0 kilometers every week.
- 7:44So get yourselves involved. Actually, guys, just talking
- 7:48about Strava, I don't know how, but I got like was looking at
- 7:52someone and I looked at someone who liked their post and I got
- 7:55looking at this woman called Kim Barcelona and she's from the USA
- 7:59and she does like 504 hundred kilometers a week.
- 8:04So as an example of her run, she does 16.23 kilometers, average
- 8:09pace 1128. So basically a walk for three
- 8:13hours. And she'd do that in the morning
- 8:15and the evening. So let's say 6-7 hours, six or
- 8:18seven hours of activity a day. I'm like, how?
- 8:21Like she's nothing like I don't know how.
- 8:24Look, give her, look up, look her up.
- 8:26It's crazy. All of her stuff is public.
- 8:28She does crazy mileage. Maybe you could interview her?
- 8:33She puts Jake Barclough to shame.
- 8:37Well, Jake isn't actually in there yet, but he might.
- 8:40He might do when he hears that he's potentially the his
- 8:43reputation for being the mileage monster and the undisputed king
- 8:46of Strava's on the line because Connor Dillon last week put in
- 8:52an obscene, which isn't unusual for him, I think 242 K.
- 8:59So that's the benchmark. The benchmarks been set.
- 9:03Like this Kim Barcelona yesterday, 29 kilometers, 724
- 9:08per kilometer pace, just absolutely like, what was it?
- 9:12Her last three weeks have been 43432362.
- 9:17Like, yeah, nuts. So the crazy people out there
- 9:21for the year, she's done 7658 kilometers so far.
- 9:25Where'd you find the time that? Doesn't make sense.
- 9:28I don't know how and it's the same.
- 9:31She lives on sort of like a peninsula, and it's like the
- 9:33same thing over and over again. Mental straining.
- 9:38Yeah. And to be fair, she'd probably
- 9:39acknowledge it was actually a listener shelf who suggested
- 9:43that we create the group, Rachel McGuinness.
- 9:45So thanks for that. And also that just goes to show
- 9:48that we are open to ideas and we want to kind of help the list,
- 9:53get the listeners to help us like stay at the pod and grow
- 9:56the pod. So if anyone's got any good
- 9:58ideas for segments and stuff like that, then we're open to
- 10:01it. We love your suggestions.
- 10:04So give you a rundown of the structure for this episode
- 10:07because of a feeling it's going to be a long one.
- 10:09We've got the US track and field championships, we've got British
- 10:13championships, we've got Irish nationals, we've got the
- 10:16Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival with 1/2 in there too.
- 10:20We've got Perth Half Marathon and we've got Beach to Beacon in
- 10:24the US of A Following that we've got the race weeks from Dean and
- 10:29Owen. We've got some other news in the
- 10:32running world including line UPS at the Berlin Major Marathon,
- 10:37more anti doping and the BIA Mile world record was set.
- 10:43We'll go to YouTube Diaries at Howie Farm and there'll be a
- 10:46double trouble at the end if we can get there.
- 10:48So let's kick it off. Dean is going to tell us about
- 10:52the US track and field results. Yeah.
- 10:54So I think we previewed most, well most of these races, all of
- 10:58these races last week. But yeah, they sort of as much
- 11:04as we tried to predict who would win as we sort of pre empted
- 11:08now, everything sort of went as you would as by the book that
- 11:12you made a note in the show notes, Ryan, that it was
- 11:15probably a good thing that there was no open markets on these
- 11:17because we might have emptied the clip and not seen much come
- 11:21back. But I think that on the first
- 11:24night of racing it was the 10,000 meter, men's and women's,
- 11:2710,000 meter finals. And so in the women's, it was
- 11:31Emily Enfield, Elise Cranny and Taylor Rose 123.
- 11:36And really it was like in that race it was like 1-2, three and
- 11:38four. So Wayne Colati was fourth.
- 11:41There was sort of three seconds between 1st and 3rd.
- 11:45And just a reflection I had on these races in general, I reckon
- 11:48apart from maybe the men's 10,000 meters, I don't think
- 11:53that the top three. So everyone's racing here for
- 11:57like it's American championships, but arguably more
- 12:01importantly, it's a chance to qualify for the Tokyo World
- 12:04Champs. And I think like apart from
- 12:06maybe the men's 10K, there might not have been a race where the
- 12:09top three leading into the home straight were not the top three
- 12:13that crossed the finish line. Like there was so much change
- 12:15and drama and excitement even in the last light in that final
- 12:18straight, which like you think you're sort of trying to run
- 12:21your way onto a national team and you're you're in 1st to 3rd
- 12:25in the finishing straight and you don't finish in that order.
- 12:27It's sort of yeah. It just talks to just what
- 12:29quality racing. It was like it would have been
- 12:32many countries where all of these spots when they when
- 12:35you're talking like some of these at the caliber of these
- 12:37athletes, it's like it was pretty exciting.
- 12:39So yeah, women's race, it was started off with a bit of an
- 12:42upset, I thought because Wayneie Colati was the highest ranked
- 12:44athlete going in and pretty in quite a bit of form, but she she
- 12:49just didn't have the legs in the last lap.
- 12:52I was sort of a bit on easy watch in terms of working out in
- 12:55terms of the quota, like if this affected the quota.
- 12:57But I've realized, I don't know, maybe during or before the race
- 13:02that there's three American athletes already in the top 27.
- 13:06So that shouldn't, the result shouldn't have any impact on
- 13:11Izzy's ability to qualify for the 10K.
- 13:13But it was still a good race to watch.
- 13:14And just a note of like how quick the standard is, like the
- 13:18standard's 3020 and the race was won in 3140, which these
- 13:22championship races tend to be a bit more tactical.
- 13:24Yeah, looking at the splits, I mean, just shout out to the the
- 13:28website because the way you can toggle through looking at 400
- 13:31meter splits, K splits, it's like unreal, isn't it?
- 13:34You can literally, you almost don't even need to watch the
- 13:37race because you can see how it unfolded from the splits and it
- 13:40shows you where the place has changed.
- 13:42But yeah, it was pedestrian 33K. They were running 320 twos.
- 13:47Maybe they went through in ten O 7 and then they've just slowly
- 13:51wound it up and they've ended up well, the winner closed in a
- 13:54254. And I'm a little bit distanced
- 13:57from this in terms of I don't really know who Emily Enfield
- 14:00is. And I don't know if that's on my
- 14:02lack of knowledge side of things or if kinda she's been a bit
- 14:05unknown in the international scene, but I've seen that she's
- 14:0935 years old and that's her first national title at the age
- 14:13of 35. And she made their debut at
- 14:15nationals in 2009. So like, talk about
- 14:19perseverance. Yeah, that's cool.
- 14:22And then Kira d'amato 7th, I think that was a Masters record
- 14:27and she would have won Gold Coast Half Marathon 2 when?
- 14:31We were all there two years ago. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:34So she's back. Ben Benny St.
- 14:38Poster to the American Record in 2023, I think.
- 14:42Was that right? Yeah, something like that.
- 14:44Yeah, yeah. Is that the old plumbers as well
- 14:47or not? Good question.
- 14:49It probably is, yeah. It was like, was it 60?
- 14:52Is it 66 high or? 67 or something like that as.
- 14:56Fast. Yeah, Yeah.
- 14:59And yeah, that cruiser Schweitzer was meant to be like
- 15:02one of the favourites as well. But yeah, it was sort of well
- 15:04beaten, wasn't in that top four in the last few laps.
- 15:08And then in the men's 10K, this sort of went mostly by the book
- 15:13in terms of. So the top three were Nico
- 15:16Young, Grant Fisher and Graham Blanks, all with all within a
- 15:20second of a second and a half of each other.
- 15:23Not particularly fast, just in like 29 flat, but it was all the
- 15:28race was all run and won in like the last mile.
- 15:32I think they split 357 for the last mile, which is insane.
- 15:37And the upset was sort of I don't know who would you did we
- 15:41did we talk about who he would have tipped?
- 15:42I would have struggled to have gone past Grant Fisher, right.
- 15:45So like he won a medal in the five and 10K in the the Olympics
- 15:50last year. And by all reports his training
- 15:53really well won every race he entered at the Grand Slam track
- 15:57mates. I can't remember what happened.
- 16:00Did he race a Diamond League? I can't remember but.
- 16:03He ran a mile. Did he run that mat?
- 16:04He run that mile at London the other week, didn't he?
- 16:07But then earlier in the season he got like 3K indoor world
- 16:10records as well. So yeah, he's just been
- 16:12absolutely flying. And I would I would have said
- 16:14Fisher as well. Yeah.
- 16:15So for Nico Young to come out and scalp him is seriously
- 16:19impressive. Like the whole rate is just a
- 16:21really good race like those. I think those guys had all run,
- 16:23what, 12:44 or 12:45 recently. So they're always gonna, they're
- 16:27gonna be hard to beat. This was funny, Dean, me and you
- 16:30were texting because it was during the work day and well, I
- 16:33don't know. Do you have any listeners from
- 16:35where I've got 1? I mean, yeah, no in between
- 16:40meetings, of course, between long busy work day.
- 16:44So I was like watching the splits progress, the K splits
- 16:47and I was like if I let it get to 7 then I can go and have a 10
- 16:51minute toilet break and watch the last three games.
- 16:55And that was where the race was, I think.
- 16:57So we probably timed it well. Yeah, when they got going, you
- 17:00knew Fisher hit the front. You're like, shit, we're on now.
- 17:03Like this is it? Women's 1500 meter 1500 meters
- 17:08was the next event. More men's and women's 1500.
- 17:12Nikki Hilt's won. Sinclair Johnson was second and
- 17:17Emily McKay was third. It felt like Nikki Hilt's was
- 17:23pretty in control, like they were the best runner on the day
- 17:26and sort of controlled the race from from what I could tell, I
- 17:30thought. Yeah, once she made their move,
- 17:32it looked like pretty decisive and that was the race done,
- 17:35wasn't it, once they made their move.
- 17:37Yeah, I think so, albeit like the the times were all pretty
- 17:42close, but but yeah, Nikki Hills looked like the favorite and got
- 17:47the got the dub. Scott there that they are a
- 17:50Lululemon athlete. Has that been the case for a
- 17:53while or because I I can't picture picture them in a Lulu
- 17:58kiss? Yeah.
- 18:00They have been a Lulu athlete for ages but they wear Nike
- 18:04spikes because new them. Lulu obviously don't do spikes,
- 18:09I think they just have one running shoe or something.
- 18:11So I'd say they have the freedom to wear whatever they want on
- 18:13their feet, but when the racing that they were like later.
- 18:18That's the drive, black the spikes out so they're OK to just
- 18:24wear them. No, I think it's OK to wear
- 18:26them. Yeah.
- 18:27That's cool. And then talking, Yeah.
- 18:31And then into the men's race. Jonah Kovich was the winner,
- 18:35Ethan Strand second, and Cole Hocker was third.
- 18:39Notably, Hobbs Kessler and Jared Nagus were 4th and 5th, and my
- 18:44Smokey was 6. Gary Martin.
- 18:47Yeah. I mean, the whole, the whole
- 18:48final was pretty stacked, even though, did you?
- 18:51I think they were running like 332 or something, even in the
- 18:54heats just to get into the final.
- 18:55Like the depth was ridiculous. And that race was, yeah, so, so
- 19:00good to watch. Did you see the Let's Run
- 19:04Instagram? They shared some snippets from,
- 19:06I think the Let's Run threads about no Goose doing a Yacob
- 19:11with just sort of leading everyone, you know, just
- 19:15basically being the pacemaker in a championship race and leading
- 19:18them through to really good times and getting out kicked.
- 19:22It's one of them, isn't it? Where like is it hindsight says
- 19:25it's of it was obviously a stupid tactic or has he like
- 19:29been successful at it up until now?
- 19:31So he's he's went with what he knows.
- 19:33Like it's hard, isn't it? Yeah, I feel like maybe pacing
- 19:37takes an edge out of your performance, but it feels like
- 19:40the times you get it wrong are just when you don't have
- 19:42anywhere to go in the final straight.
- 19:44Like David Rudicha won the Olympics in 2012 front running
- 19:49and ran a world record and just dominated.
- 19:51I think if you just go out slightly beyond what you're
- 19:54capable of, which is probably the risk, right?
- 19:56You're probably so full of adrenaline and you're trying to
- 19:58gauge effort and it feels so effortless.
- 20:01And you're just so excited in such a big championship race
- 20:03that it's hard to ensure that you have just that little bit
- 20:06left in reserve for the final 100 meters.
- 20:08But quite the shock. So like, Negus was, what, 3rd at
- 20:12the Olympics? And now Kant doesn't even get a
- 20:14chance to race at the following World Championships despite I
- 20:17think he broke a indoor world record earlier in the year.
- 20:20So the American like, distance scene is just insane.
- 20:24It's it's yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 20:26Yeah, well, he just recently got closed on by Laros, didn't he?
- 20:30From like Miles you would have thought maybe would he have re
- 20:33evaluated his tactics on the back of that but apparently not.
- 20:37And did did one of you guys tip Ethan Strand as one of the smoky
- 20:41pigs? What does smoky mean?
- 20:44Oh, like like a dark horse? Like a Ruffy Ruffy.
- 20:49Yeah, the Australian slang, huh? Yeah, what would you?
- 20:54How would you if you? Were have I'd say dark horse,
- 20:58dark horse or like 1 to watch here.
- 21:00This Jonah coach, like I feel like he came out of nowhere, but
- 21:03he's I think he was an 800 guy looking at his like past few
- 21:07results. He's round.
- 21:09Treat, do you want me to tee you up?
- 21:11I'll tee you up with something and you can you can take off on
- 21:14it because I've seen that he's he's based in Kenya.
- 21:18No comment. Very good results from him.
- 21:24Yeah, because Neil, Neil Gurley, who they both run from drama and
- 21:29someone was asking girly at the British champs like do you train
- 21:32with him? And he said no, he's based in
- 21:33Kenya. Going on him, I'll keep my mouth
- 21:36shut. If I talk, I get in trouble.
- 21:41Jose Marine, you know what I mean?
- 21:43But not to be fair, he's run like 144 for 800 loads of times.
- 21:48And then May 2025, he ran a 331. He ran a 143 at the end of May
- 21:55in the 800. But yeah.
- 21:58It's hard to keep up because wasn't the guy who won the
- 22:01London Diamond League. He was a coach as well.
- 22:03Fanwell, Coach. I'm actually looking here.
- 22:05In 2022 he was disqualified in the World Championships, but I
- 22:11don't know why. I should probably look this up
- 22:13before. This is mad though.
- 22:16So like, if you look at people will still say that Cole Hawker
- 22:20is the favorite to win gold in Tokyo and he's been beaten by
- 22:23two people, not just two people, but two people from his own
- 22:27country. So like, the depth in this 1500
- 22:30is absolutely obscene. Yeah, and one kids just
- 22:35graduated college, scalp the Olympic reigning Olympic golden
- 22:40bronze medalists. Like he's just gone running hot
- 22:43like college athletics to that. It's pretty cool.
- 22:45It's pretty cool. And that happens like, I don't
- 22:48know, it talks to how good the US college system is, right?
- 22:51Yeah, so that Ethan Strands the guy who was in the B race at
- 22:54that mile a few weeks back, wasn't it?
- 22:56He ran like 3-4 E 8 maybe there or something but in the B race
- 23:00like what the hell is going on? So Jonah Kovich was disqualified
- 23:05in the 2022 World Championships in the 800 meters for, like,
- 23:10jostling or obstruction. So yeah.
- 23:14Least he's clean. Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:17Women's 800. Hold on.
- 23:21I'm going to need your help here, Owen.
- 23:24No, Give it a go. Give it a go.
- 23:25I. Don't want to Rasheen.
- 23:30Rasheen. Yeah, OK, not too bad.
- 23:34I've heard of these girls before, Willis.
- 23:36Maggie Congdon and Sage Herde Clicker.
- 23:40We've heard of Sage Herde Clicker, right?
- 23:42That's always say athlete. But yeah, I think like I think
- 23:49you mentioned in the show notes, Ryan, I think MU who who
- 23:52famously fell right in the US Olympic trials last year when
- 23:59she was one of the favourites to win an Olympic medal and
- 24:03therefore didn't progress into to the Olympics last year, she
- 24:07didn't make it through the semis, right?
- 24:10And again, just like ridiculously, even ridiculously
- 24:12stacked final, like last place in the final was 202 low and
- 24:17first was 159 low. Like the whole all 8 within 2
- 24:21seconds of each other. I feel like that sage her to
- 24:24click has been like around get qualifying for teams so pretty
- 24:27cool that she made it. Yeah, feel like I'm familiar
- 24:30with NIA Aikens or NIA Atkins and Raven Rogers as well, and
- 24:36Addison Wiley potentially, who are all three of the names who
- 24:39have missed out there. So yeah, very close race and.
- 24:44So NIA Aikens quick one on her. So I think last year she would
- 24:49have ran with Brooks and then she had a bust up with the coach
- 24:53or something. So then she was obviously
- 24:57wearing like unbranded stuff. So I was wondering like where
- 25:00has she gone? Like what brand has she gone
- 25:02with? So it seems like she's gone with
- 25:03Hoka, which is which is a nice choice.
- 25:06Good shoes. Side point, but when you look at
- 25:09these line UPS now, it's it's good that like if you look at
- 25:12all of those athletes, you've got a New Balance scale, Nike,
- 25:15OAC, Hoker, Bandit. I'm not sure what that is.
- 25:18Brooks and Adidas, like literally everyone's
- 25:21represented. It just shows like all the
- 25:23brands are level. Men's 800 could have been like
- 25:27the race of the championships. Maybe the winner was Donovan
- 25:33Brazier. Second was Cooper Luton House
- 25:38and 3rd was Bryce Hopple. Notably 4th was Josh Hoey who
- 25:44was the world champion indoors for that 800 earlier in the year
- 25:48and lighting it up over that the diamond leagues and stuff.
- 25:52Have you seen this race back, Dean?
- 25:54Yeah. It's insane, isn't it?
- 25:56Yeah, I'm sorry. I should mention the times.
- 25:59So like, because I think what's the auto standard for the men's
- 26:03like 144.5, which is I think pretty ridiculous.
- 26:08Top 7 all ran under that time. And yeah, the top three were
- 26:13under 142.5. So I think, I think so 2nd, 2nd
- 26:20place. Have you seen this, Owen?
- 26:22Do you know how old second is? No how old I've seen him but I
- 26:26don't know what age is. Have a guess. 2122. 16.
- 26:33What? Yeah, have you seen the size of
- 26:36him? No.
- 26:38He's pretty light, he's pretty well put together for a 16 year
- 26:41old. Do you have you seen Ryan?
- 26:43You see the finishing photo when he puts his arms up as he's
- 26:45crossing the line. Yeah, he's a bit of a tank.
- 26:47Yeah. So there's there's three pieces
- 26:49of information on on that results image equally as
- 26:53baffling as each other. So it's got for his brand that
- 26:56says unattached and then his age says 16 and then over underneath
- 27:00his time it says under 18 world record.
- 27:04And I think he he broke that world record.
- 27:06So it's under 18 and he's 16. So it's he's not even like close
- 27:10to going into the next age category by like 3 seconds.
- 27:14Wait, so he's born in 2009? Oh my God.
- 27:23Yeah, he ran a three and a half second PB, which is pretty solid
- 27:28for an 800m runner. And he ran it pretty even, like
- 27:33he ran a 51st lap and then a 51 second lap.
- 27:37He closed like an absolute train, like the race had broken
- 27:40away from him. I admit there was 3 or 4 off the
- 27:43front. Yeah, I heard AI heard an
- 27:45interview and he mentioned that like in like his middle school
- 27:50days, he was his tactic was to go around like 200 or two, 250.
- 27:56And so he sort of waited until around then before he sort of
- 27:59moved and he just flew around. He was like in lane 3 in the
- 28:02finishing straight, just flew home.
- 28:05I think he's part of this, this new Nike group for kids.
- 28:08Scary. I mean, he's a kid.
- 28:11Yeah, the gap that he closed, even at like 1120 or so to go,
- 28:15he was about 10 meters off the back, wasn't he?
- 28:18And then he genuinely just like destroyed them up that home
- 28:21straight. But like we should mention as
- 28:23well, Donovan Brazier, To be fair, like 6 months ago he
- 28:27wouldn't have been a name in anyone's mouth because you
- 28:30wouldn't have known he was even training, let alone racing.
- 28:33And then he's just come back and put like 3 or 4 performances
- 28:37together and managed to PB and win champs like he's former
- 28:42world champ in 2019 was it? Yeah, He won the world champs in
- 28:452019 and then apparently ran about a total of a month of
- 28:49running in two years. And now it's back in this sort
- 28:52of shape. And like, I think what that the
- 28:55kid that finished second the time he ran would have been good
- 28:57enough to have won Donovan Brazier 2019 World Champs final,
- 29:01which was a championship record at the time or something.
- 29:04So like, not like Donovan Brazier just had to get back to
- 29:07his old best. He's had to get better because
- 29:09the eight hundreds got faster and faster.
- 29:11So yeah, ridiculous. Like another ridiculous race.
- 29:16And obviously we've talked a lot about Josh Howie this year
- 29:19because he's been doing so well in the Diamond League.
- 29:21So sad to see him back and forth.
- 29:23But I think maybe does he still have a chance if he can win?
- 29:27Because there's the wild card spot for winning the Diamond
- 29:30League final, isn't there? Oh, I did hear that mention.
- 29:33I didn't understood understand what that meant.
- 29:35Is that real? Yeah, so like if you reign in
- 29:37champion, the maybe Olympics or definitely in the in the
- 29:41previous World Championships and then there's like the Diamond
- 29:44League final winner in each event gets a wild card as well.
- 29:48So that's why. And Nagusk gets a second bite at
- 29:51the cherry. Well, that's cool.
- 29:53Well, when's that? That must be soon then.
- 29:55Is that the Zurich 1? So yeah, it must be like end of
- 29:58this month. I think there's two more diamond
- 30:00leagues. Yeah, there's 2 coming up.
- 30:02Lausanne and Cialcer must be one of them, to be fair.
- 30:07And then moving on to the men's 5K, the winner sort of, I think
- 30:13maybe had a bit of a point to prove after getting dusted in
- 30:16the 1500, was Cole Hocker. Second was Grant Fisher, third
- 30:20Nico Young. Yeah, notable 4th, 5th and 6th
- 30:24Drew, Hunter, Cooper Tier and Parker Wolf. 200 200 was my
- 30:29Smokey. Hey man, I don't know if you've
- 30:32seen it, but like I think if he put himself, if he, I don't know
- 30:36if it was a bit of like lack of self belief, but he was maybe 6
- 30:39going into like around that final bend and just maybe left
- 30:43like a yard or two and was closing.
- 30:46You know, Vanika Youngblatt was closing in on 3rd and just ran
- 30:49out of real estate. I feel like if he was just a
- 30:51smidge closer, he would have qualified because he was not
- 30:54fast. It was like 1326 was the winning
- 30:57time, which but I know like that Drew Hunter was maybe he hadn't
- 31:01posted any times, right? But he was trying to focus on
- 31:03winning races. Remember we were talking about
- 31:05that the other week And yeah, he looked, he looked the best of
- 31:08the rest and was was gunning home for a spot.
- 31:10So which was cool. So yeah, feel for him a little.
- 31:13Bit I've seen someone pose the question, is Carl Hawker a medal
- 31:17chance in the 5000 if he decides to double because of this?
- 31:22But I think now because this he's won this in 1326.
- 31:26So he's been set up. Well, I think he from he from
- 31:29ran it to be fair. So that's not his fault.
- 31:33But he was allowed to close like a train because it was quite
- 31:38slow. Whereas if Finger Britain and
- 31:41all the other guys, now they know that potentially a 1500
- 31:44metre guy is going to be in the race, they're not going to let
- 31:46it be slow, are they? It's going to be like 1245 or
- 31:49something. And I couldn't end up eating my
- 31:51words. But I don't think he'd be able
- 31:53to close off a 1245 pace. Yeah I agree if it's like fast
- 31:58then I think the other guys are stronger where if it's slow then
- 32:01he's definitely a chance. I wonder if he will double.
- 32:04Do you reckon he does the 15 five?
- 32:06Well, here's another interesting narrative that might guide that
- 32:10decision. If Hocker double S then misses
- 32:17out, but if Hocker decides to just do the 1500 then the
- 32:22position opens up to the next person down the list which is
- 32:25cupertier with the next ranking well.
- 32:28He's the qualifying standard. So Drew Hunter doesn't have the
- 32:30world qualifying standard, but Cooper does.
- 32:33So that could be an awkward household that's.
- 32:36So interesting. You'd imagine you'd let him do
- 32:38it, but I don't know. These, they're ruthless, these
- 32:41competitors, aren't they? I think I was listening to the
- 32:43Coffee Club podcast and I think they're on about coupe tier was
- 32:47like bang on about doing the double Hawker.
- 32:50Yeah, sorry, sorry. Hawker was on about doing the
- 32:52double. Yeah, the 15 five double.
- 32:54So that's so because I feel like Cooper has been knocking on the
- 32:57door for ages and like he's such a good athlete.
- 32:59It's just America is so stacked. That's just so unlucky.
- 33:03Thing you would say though, to go towards the Hawker gold medal
- 33:07in the 1500 shout, if he's able to beat Grant Fisher and Nico
- 33:11Young, who are two of the best 5K runners in the world, over
- 33:145K. And he's got six weeks to now
- 33:18add some specificity and speed stuff to his 15, but then he's
- 33:23going to be hard to stop. But I just can't wait to see
- 33:27Jacob back in the mix of all these things.
- 33:30Yeah, hopefully he's fit and firing.
- 33:32Sure he is. Women's 5K Shelby Houlihan got
- 33:36the win at least. Cranny was in 2nd and Josette
- 33:39Andrews was third. Wayne Collaty, unlucky, very
- 33:44unlucky to finish fourth again. So yeah, the winning times were.
- 33:49So it was all it was again, it was all pretty, pretty close,
- 33:52albeit they were all sort of sprinting towards the line.
- 33:54Shelby had a bit of a gap with maybe a hundreds ago looked like
- 33:57they like just closed a bit quicker than than the rest it it
- 34:01seemed. But there was certainly a few in
- 34:03it sort of going into the bell. And yeah, whoever had the
- 34:08quickest turn of speed got the win.
- 34:10Did you have any comments on the winner or anyone known?
- 34:13No comments if I talk I guess. This is kind of like what you
- 34:18don't really want to see, isn't it?
- 34:20Like, I don't know, I mean, if she's back racing, okay, you can
- 34:26allow it. But then making the first
- 34:28national team straight away again, it's like, oh come on,
- 34:31it's a bit of a kick in the teeth.
- 34:33It's bullshit if you get caught for doping you should not be
- 34:35allowed to run again in a competitive scenario.
- 34:38You can do your own fun run but because you got got doping like
- 34:41you're after getting the benefits from the drugs like
- 34:43it's bullshit she shouldn't be allowed run.
- 34:45Mic drop. Yeah.
- 34:48And then now she's probably sat there all like all arrogant and
- 34:52stuff because she's like her prove, just, I don't know what
- 34:54she'd prove anyone wrong about, but she'll be on her pedestal
- 34:57over the fact that she's now back in the team and like,
- 35:00that's all in the past. But I don't know, it's a tough
- 35:04one to swallow. I actually, I had a kebab for
- 35:07dinner, so you know, it could be any of us, so we should be
- 35:09careful. And that's the other thing she
- 35:13hasn't, she's shown no remorse ever over it, has she?
- 35:16She hasn't even like come out and owned it.
- 35:18And like, that would help it be a bit easier if like at least
- 35:22she was apologetic and said, yeah, I take full
- 35:26accountability, but she like denied it the whole time with
- 35:30some bizarre excuse. She's always denied it, which
- 35:33is, and then again, like the coffee club lads, you'd like to
- 35:36trust them and they're friends with people around her who said
- 35:39she like she didn't do it, but it's just it doesn't add up the
- 35:43amount of shit that was in her system.
- 35:45Like look, I don't know. I think like Kenya is rotten,
- 35:49but I'm pretty sure it's going on everywhere just because
- 35:52Kenya, the third world country, like they really do get nailed,
- 35:55but definitely going on everywhere.
- 35:56So she actually had an interest in interview after this as well
- 36:00because she was I think she started like calling out while
- 36:03they're like World Athletics open agency.
- 36:06And she's kinda like almost pointing the finger at other
- 36:09athletes as well and saying like, well, you don't.
- 36:13It goes on everywhere and you're not kind of catching it.
- 36:15Which, like, the narrative just isn't really building very well,
- 36:18is it? No, like you'd look at, so you'd
- 36:23presume like the medical situation in Kenya isn't as good
- 36:26as the medical situation in like the US or let's say Ireland or
- 36:31Australia. So I feel like you could easily
- 36:34like the more the Western countries are way more equipped
- 36:38to get away with all this shit of shit.
- 36:40Like they're more advanced than Kent.
- 36:42Well, you'd like to presume so, yeah.
- 36:45You just hate to think what's actually going on.
- 36:47And I wish there was a way to just like, like, actually find
- 36:50out. I don't know.
- 36:52But yeah, that was the end of the USA Track and field chance
- 36:56all. Right, then moving on to the UK
- 37:00Athletics Championships, which were also held over this
- 37:02weekend. I think we made well.
- 37:04I made a bit of an error last weekend thinking that they were
- 37:06the weekend after so rather than a preview I have a review.
- 37:12So they were held in Birmingham in the Alexander Stadium and the
- 37:16first race with the women's 5000 meters was won by Hannah Nuttall
- 37:20which I think is the UK is like primary 5000m runner on the
- 37:25women's side of things at the minute.
- 37:27So no surprise to see her when she ran 1546.
- 37:32Second was in the Aware in 1547 and 3rd was in Fitzgerald in
- 37:381548. So incredibly tight finish.
- 37:42But the way the UK does their selection is a little bit
- 37:44different to the US. So if you have the world Affleck
- 37:48standard and you finish top two, then you're an auto choice.
- 37:52But if you finish top 2 and you don't have the standard, you're
- 37:56not an auto choice. You have now a period up until
- 37:59the end of August to go and chase a standard or then for the
- 38:04third spot that becomes available.
- 38:07It's selectors discretion if you're in the world rankings
- 38:10quota, but you don't have the standard.
- 38:13So it's a little bit messy, to be fair.
- 38:15I like the way they wear their club vests, like in America they
- 38:18wear their brands like so Nike on Adidas, whatever.
- 38:22But here they wear their like club singlets, which is I think
- 38:25it's kill to see. And that India Weir, who came
- 38:28second, she's recently signed with Team Macau, the Hoka group
- 38:33in England. So she'll be part of that
- 38:34YouTube channel now, which is cool.
- 38:37Yeah. So for this one, I know Hannah
- 38:39Nuttall's got the standard and who was first and the Galen
- 38:42third in Fitzgerald also has the standard.
- 38:45So I think that means that they'll both go because Hannah
- 38:49will get the auto selection and Inns will get like the
- 38:53discretionary one for the third spot.
- 38:55Now with India, I think she would.
- 38:58I'm not sure if she has the standard or not, but if not,
- 39:00she'll have to go and chase it or hope that the selectors are
- 39:04kind. Because there are other girls
- 39:06who do have the standard, like Megan Keith, the Scottish girl,
- 39:10and there's a girl called Melissa Courtney Bryant, but I
- 39:13think she might be potentially primarily a 1500m runner.
- 39:17Did Megan Keith run? I don't think so.
- 39:20She was fit. I'm not sure why.
- 39:22She ran that racing cork and the racing cork that I was at and
- 39:25she was fit. I have two, two selection
- 39:28periods as well. Or like where they announced the
- 39:31team, which is weird. So like today they will announce
- 39:35the first part of the team, which is those who have the
- 39:37standard and they finished in the top 2.
- 39:40And then at the end of August, they'll kind of finish it off by
- 39:44seeing who else has run the standard in the meantime.
- 39:47Come here the way I wish. We're probably gone to it later
- 39:50at the 1500s, but the way the UK do, they're like qualifiers,
- 39:55like the small queue and like fastest loser and all that shit
- 39:58is sort of bullshit as well. Yeah, well, go on.
- 40:04Do you mean in terms of qualifying for national finals
- 40:06or the selection policy? So from the heat to the final.
- 40:10Yeah. Would you just prefer more in
- 40:13terms of just the top number and every height, so then you don't
- 40:16have to worry about big Q, little Q?
- 40:18Yeah, because we'll talk about in 1500, but like, the first
- 40:22heat was so super slow. So like the fastest losers all
- 40:25came from the second heat. So like if you run first in the
- 40:28first heat, you're at total disadvantage.
- 40:29Yeah, yeah, I think the in the first heat 4 went through just
- 40:33from the top four, and then the second heat 8 of them went
- 40:36through because they are all the fastest losers.
- 40:38Well, we'll do the 1500 now then, seen as we're there.
- 40:41So we'll start with the men's because that's where I think
- 40:45unless it happened in the women's two, there was this
- 40:47calamity over the fastest losers.
- 40:49So in the final, in the end, Neil Gurley won in a 347, which
- 40:54if you compare that to the time in the US was 3/30 is incredibly
- 41:00slow. Like they're literally jogging
- 41:01for like 2 laps. All three of us could have been
- 41:05there in the pack for a couple of laps just chilling.
- 41:08And Elliott Giles was second in 347 as well, just got out
- 41:13kicked. So they both have the standard
- 41:16so they will both go. And then the guy in 3rd was
- 41:19Samuel Churig. Now he's done a lot of the front
- 41:22running so it was nice to see him hold on for a medal, but
- 41:25also a shame that he kind of didn't end up getting one of
- 41:29those top 2 spots. But I don't know if you have
- 41:32seen this race, it's actually quite funny because it's
- 41:35basically a one lap there, not at the end and from the field
- 41:39because like Whiteman's missing and Kerr's missing and George
- 41:42Mills are missing. You know that Giles and Girly
- 41:45are like the star athletes in there and they obviously know it
- 41:48themselves. So once they kind of get going,
- 41:51it's between those two. And Girly was boxed in for a lot
- 41:55of the race and you're thinking, shit, is he going to be able to
- 41:57get himself out? Like he might have messed up?
- 42:00And he does anyway. And he just runs over Elliot
- 42:02like on the line or he's he's passing him like maybe 10 meters
- 42:06to go. And Giles in a bit of a panic,
- 42:09stopped running out to his right.
- 42:12And V is into his lane. And you see Gailey give him like
- 42:16a bit of a signal, like, what the hell are you doing?
- 42:19And then they have like a little bit of words afterwards.
- 42:22It's it's like almost refreshing to see like a bit of rivalry and
- 42:26a bit of intensity. But yeah, it was.
- 42:28I don't think Giles was in the right leg to try and cut him off
- 42:31like that. Did you guys see the the 200
- 42:34meters in the US trial in the US world chance trials?
- 42:39You said that bit of pushing after that as well.
- 42:41Yeah, bit of space involved there.
- 42:43It makes me wonder though, because it's Lyles.
- 42:45Like is it engineered or not? It's good either way.
- 42:48He's such a that was like, I don't know what a douchebag.
- 42:52Do you see what he did? I didn't.
- 42:54He basically like caught him with like what he was second
- 42:59with and then got in front with about 2030 meters to go.
- 43:02Just turns and just stares at him as he runs over the top of
- 43:04him and just stares him down and then keeps staring him down
- 43:07after he crosses the line and so then cops a shove and then
- 43:11didn't like it. Yeah, Bednarak launched him,
- 43:14didn't he? And then he goes, he goes over
- 43:16afterwards. So like try and shake his hand
- 43:19and Lyle's like just stands there for like 3 seconds doesn't
- 43:22he? Ever so awkward.
- 43:24Yeah. And then something like they
- 43:25carried on in their interview. Did you see this the mic?
- 43:29I haven't said yeah, I haven't heard it, but I heard it
- 43:32referenced. Do you know what they said?
- 43:34Yeah, I think, I can't remember which way around who says it's a
- 43:38who, but one of them says like, oh, I didn't know we had the
- 43:41problem. Like if I knew, I thought you
- 43:43would call me. But this isn't like during the
- 43:46interview. It's kind of like when the guy's
- 43:47setting it up and the mic just picks it up.
- 43:51Which is fair enough. Like, I mean, but there's one
- 43:53person creating a problem, then the other person just reacted
- 43:57because it's probably fired up. Quick one with the with the 1500
- 44:01now in the UK. So Josh Kerr gets the wild card
- 44:05then Neil Gurley and Elliott Giles finish 1/2.
- 44:10So did they get picked or like George Mel's Jake Whiteman, like
- 44:13what happens there now? Yeah, so Giles and Gailey will
- 44:16be the second and third pick behind Care, but because is a
- 44:21wild card pick, that means they'll have 4 spots.
- 44:23So there's one more spot should the selectors choose to use it
- 44:27because you know, they don't always fill the team's GB, but
- 44:31because it's either white men or Mills, likely they will use it.
- 44:36It's just kind of whether Mills decides to double or not.
- 44:40So transition into the men's 5000 meters then.
- 44:43The big favorite here ahead of this was Josh Kerr choosing to
- 44:46run the 5000 rather than his traditional 1500.
- 44:50And he delivered on that favouritism, winning in 1344
- 44:55from Jack Kavana in second in 1353, Rory Leonard third in
- 45:001354. So I don't know if any of you
- 45:04managed to see this race. I think I was trying to set you
- 45:07up for an A dodgy VPN to get the iPlayer up wasn't I Dean?
- 45:12You were, you were, you were competing against the the F1 was
- 45:16live as well, so we had a juggling a few things last
- 45:19night. Yeah, so they were, they were
- 45:21bunched for a while because it was very slow.
- 45:24And the commentators are rightly pointing out like, what are
- 45:28these guys doing? Like Josh Cares, one of the best
- 45:311500 meter runners in the world, why would you not like try and
- 45:34hair him from the start in the 5000?
- 45:37And then after I think about 3K or with 1600 to go, Rory Leonard
- 45:43decides to kind of inject some pace runs off the front and Care
- 45:47was like the only one who went with him at the time.
- 45:51And then Care let Leonard have maybe 2 laps or 600 meters and
- 45:57it looked like Rory Leonard was moving at the time.
- 45:59To be fair, you can't tell whether like Josh Kerr's hair
- 46:02and or not, but you can tell that like there's a change of
- 46:06gear. And then when Care decides to go
- 46:08past them, you see quite clearly he wasn't hurting at all because
- 46:12he just gaps Rory Leonard like straight away, like 10 meters,
- 46:1520 meters, 30 meters. And then Rory Leonard's
- 46:20isolated. And that's why the guy, Jack
- 46:22Cavana ends up coming in over the top of him for second.
- 46:26But Josh cares. He's celebrating and waving to
- 46:29the crowd with like 170 to go, 160 to go.
- 46:33I think he'd done it first. And then he's like, oh, shit,
- 46:37like what we're doing? Like I've committed to this now.
- 46:39So he just does it like the whole way.
- 46:43Steve Ovett, the 80s type. Carry on.
- 46:46Yeah, he's not lacking any confidence, the guy, is he?
- 46:49Did you mention what he ran his last?
- 46:50Was it last? His fast clothes wasn't.
- 46:54It Oh yeah, it was a 231 think by himself.
- 46:58And it was quite windy as well. That's.
- 47:01Fast you can always. This is a weird point, but you
- 47:04can always tell with him when he gets in shape because you see
- 47:07sometimes like mid season if he does like a YouTube video or
- 47:10like does some sort of sponsorship and he's doing a
- 47:13promo. Not that he gets fast obviously,
- 47:17but his face kind of fills up a little bit.
- 47:19And then when you see him turn up to these main meats, he's
- 47:21like absolutely shredded to the bone, like veins popping out of
- 47:25his head and jaw chiseled. So that's when you know he's
- 47:29ready to go because he takes his diet very seriously as well
- 47:32think, doesn't he? Yeah, I remember hearing him
- 47:34talk about he had his own personal chef to knee at one
- 47:36point. Yeah, I think he.
- 47:39Owens reading a chapter of the chef's book at the minute,
- 47:42aren't you? It's half two here, so I'm just
- 47:46preparing some lunch. So you do a sort of food
- 47:50segment. Yeah, Owens escapades whilst
- 47:53recording, almost getting its own segments.
- 47:56Go and tell us what you're doing.
- 47:57So macros. Well, I'm training twice today,
- 48:01so I'm having three boiled eggs, a bagel with some ham and
- 48:07chorizo. Guys, treat so is like just a
- 48:11little spice you need in your life.
- 48:14Apparently there's protein in it.
- 48:16I don't know. But yeah, sort of my my standard
- 48:20lunch on, let's say, a double training day.
- 48:22And so yeah, that's what I'm currently doing.
- 48:27Delightful, and for the listeners who aren't privileged
- 48:29enough to be witnessing this, we will literally see an Owen
- 48:32crackers eggs over the bowl before.
- 48:36Has to be done Fuel. But yeah, no, Josh Kerr made a
- 48:40big deal out of his diet because I think he dropped like 4 KG or
- 48:45something. He was normally low 70s.
- 48:47And then before the Olympics he done really well and I think he
- 48:50got down to like high 60s. And like when you think about
- 48:53it, like he's running what, let's say like 4 KG, so let's
- 48:57say 4 bags of sugar, like he's not carrying them anymore.
- 49:00So it can make a big difference. It's just doing it right without
- 49:04like getting injured or getting sick or being still able to
- 49:08train at high quality. And so, yeah, the personal chef
- 49:11would really out in that situation.
- 49:14There's like that fine invisible line which you don't know when
- 49:18you're going to cross the threshold of like being too
- 49:21depleted and going too far with like the weight loss, because
- 49:24obviously being light is an advantage, but they can also get
- 49:28to a point where you just weak from it, isn't it?
- 49:30Yeah, absolutely. And you don't really know you've
- 49:32crossed the line until you've crossed it if you get me.
- 49:36And like you've gotten injured or you're sick.
- 49:38So yeah, you just, you're better off over fueling if anything, if
- 49:42you're not really sure. Great.
- 49:46I did actually see in his interview afterwards he was
- 49:49asked or could the 5000 interest you in the future, would you be
- 49:53interested in going up the distances?
- 49:56And he said his answer was like a bit mad, to be fair, he said,
- 49:59or there's not enough money in it for the work that you have to
- 50:02put in to get fit for the 5000. And like, I guess it's no
- 50:06surprise, like, you know, that the 1500s like the premier
- 50:09events. But that obviously must be
- 50:12reflected in like the contracts and the endorsements that they
- 50:15get. Women's 800 meters.
- 50:17Then in the absence of Keely Hodgkinson and Phoebe Gill and
- 50:21Georgia Hunter Bell reigns supreme in A15953, Gemma Riki
- 50:26second to flat .97 and Abby Ives third in 201.11.
- 50:33So this was quite straightforward.
- 50:37Once Georgia Bell kind of like applied herself to this.
- 50:39She was like the standout athlete in the field and you
- 50:42expected her to win and she did that.
- 50:45Gemma Riki kind of LED it out for most of it.
- 50:47But then coming up into the last 201 hundred, her legs look like
- 50:51they'd went a little bit and she'd done well.
- 50:55I don't know. I don't want to say to hold on
- 50:56for a second because she was quite comfortably second, but
- 50:59then the girl in third kind of closed up quite hard and then it
- 51:03looked like, which was quite bizarre.
- 51:05She almost like took her foot off the gas.
- 51:06The girl in 3rd says she's only 21 and like Gemma Ricci's been
- 51:11around for a while and made like quite a few teams and there's a
- 51:14bit of a big name. So I don't know if she almost
- 51:16like shit herself and was like, I don't want to pass her like
- 51:20this. This isn't meant to happen.
- 51:21It looked like she genuinely could have if she wanted to, but
- 51:25and know how it looks on the outside, she could have been
- 51:27like hair and so much on the inside.
- 51:29So I'm sure she was made-up with that.
- 51:32But again, in the interview afterwards, some good, good
- 51:34insight from Georgia Hunter Bell.
- 51:36She said she hasn't decided yet if she's going to do the 1500 or
- 51:40the 800. She's going to race one of each
- 51:43in the upcoming Diamond Leagues and decide after that.
- 51:47Which in your opinion is the more competitive?
- 51:49Like what would you be better off having a medal chance in?
- 51:52Like I think the 1500 is stacked with Kippie, a gun and all that
- 51:54sort of stuff. So if she's after a medal, you
- 51:57nearly go for the 800. Yeah, I mean, I think she
- 52:00wouldn't say this, but she trains in the same group as
- 52:03Keely Hodgkinson, doesn't she? So she might almost be waiting
- 52:06to see what sort of shape Keely's in when she comes back
- 52:10and then decide from there. Because it's like, if Keely's
- 52:13fully fit, then that's probably the gold medal there.
- 52:16But if she comes back and finishes like 4th or 5th or runs
- 52:20two or three or something, then maybe she'd be like, I'm a
- 52:23decent chance here I should gamble on the 800 men's 800
- 52:27meters was front run by Max Bergen, which if you've seen him
- 52:31race before, would be no surprise to hear that he front
- 52:34run it because he's he's quite tall and he's quite broad.
- 52:38He's a bit of a big unit. He just hits the front and you'd
- 52:41think that the guys behind them get a good six.
- 52:43It'll take a lot of the wind, but he's just so strong.
- 52:46So like he actually manages the gap.
- 52:48The rest of them like pretty early, which I guess is key.
- 52:52He's not really giving them a set.
- 52:54So he's around 143.92, second was 10 and Kroger in in 14556
- 53:02and 3rd Alex Botterell in 14557. So again in here there's a
- 53:08couple of names who missed out on the place in Ben Patterson,
- 53:12whose end up finishing ninth, is someone who's made UK teams
- 53:15before. He was.
- 53:17He was. Ben Patterson was turned in the
- 53:18Olympics, wasn't he? Yeah, I think, yeah, he meddled.
- 53:22Yeah. Which is great, but he he's
- 53:24really injured this year. Yeah, he's only just made his
- 53:27comeback now, so cutting a bit of slack to be fair.
- 53:29But I don't know if that means like his selection chances are
- 53:32done now because he doesn't have the standard and he hasn't been
- 53:35top 2. He's got time to go and run a
- 53:37standard, but Oh well. Yeah, if he runs a standard on
- 53:40that third spot with the selectors discretion, they could
- 53:43still choose him because they'll have the standard, but I don't
- 53:46know if it looks likely on the back of that.
- 53:48We'll have to see. Women's 1500 meters now.
- 53:53This was the shock of the meat, if you like.
- 53:57So again, I wasn't sure if this was my lack of knowledge, but
- 53:59Sarah Calvert had genuinely like, no disrespect to her.
- 54:03Never heard of her before this and she's one.
- 54:06She's beaten. Laura Muir.
- 54:08Reve Walcott Nolan, Aaron Wallace, Katie Snowden.
- 54:12So this girl for context, was running at the World Uni Games
- 54:16last week. Now like we know Max Shervington
- 54:19from WA was there. So like obviously the the great
- 54:22athletes, but they're not people you would typically see making
- 54:26world teams, at least not yet anyway.
- 54:28The kind of like those up and coming ones with the potential.
- 54:31So the fact that she's went from there to then winning the
- 54:34national championships against the calibre of athletes that's
- 54:37behind her is quite bizarre. It just shows you like
- 54:41championship racing. It's totally different when
- 54:43you've no basic pacemaker like this race was won in 416, which
- 54:47is like pretty slow. So it all comes down to a kick,
- 54:50really doesn't and how you're feeling. 100% and her interview
- 54:54afterwards again was quite refreshing because you can tell
- 54:57how shocked she is, like she wasn't expecting it because
- 55:00they're asking her like what her plans are now.
- 55:02So essentially if she can go and run the standard, she'll get a
- 55:05spot. And she was like, genuinely no
- 55:09idea. Like I'll have to speak to my
- 55:11coach and see if we can find some races because in the back
- 55:14of my head I thought maybe a medal at like absolute best case
- 55:19scenario, but I just didn't expect for this to be like the
- 55:22case. So the girl in fourth, Erin
- 55:25Wallace, she's another one from the M11 track group who's Keith
- 55:29Hodgkinson, Georgia Hunter, Bella JAMA Riki.
- 55:32And she done most of the front running, which I guess she'll be
- 55:36regretting now because I think on paper, perhaps her plus
- 55:41either Laura Muir or Rebei Walcott Nolan would have been
- 55:44the ones you'd expect. Includes the British
- 55:47Championships over to the Irish. Righty OH so our championships
- 55:54happened over 2 days. So most of the heats were on on
- 55:57the Saturday and then on the Sunday was the finals was the
- 56:01big day. So on the women's 5K, Neve Allen
- 56:05won in 1535, Anika Thompson came second in 1540 and Fiona Everard
- 56:13came third in 16 O 4. The men's 5K was won by Andrew
- 56:20Hoskren in 1334, Second was Brian Faye in 13481334.
- 56:28Again it was a sort of a Sprint finish dip for the line and then
- 56:31Jack O'Leary came third in 1341. That was the race I was in.
- 56:37I was just praying not to get lapped and I didn't in fact get
- 56:41lapped. So that was that was good.
- 56:44But from what I heard, I think Andrew finished in 55 second
- 56:48last lap. It was a total.
- 56:50It was pretty slow through 3K and then they just picked it up
- 56:54something ridiculous. And I'm like 1334, like, for
- 56:58like a champion brace, it's pretty, pretty fast.
- 57:02But yeah, and I was shocked to see Andrew even, like a lot of
- 57:06them must be trying to do the double, that 155K double,
- 57:10because I would have presumed Andrew Coster and would just
- 57:12throw all his eggs in that 1500 basket.
- 57:14But there must be some. There must be like spread out
- 57:17nicely in Tokyo or some I don't really know because yeah, I was
- 57:21talking to him before the race and I should have asked them Why
- 57:25are you here? But no would.
- 57:29He be preselected. I think he's ran 311 but I'm not
- 57:35sure 1311 sorry. I'm not sure what way the
- 57:39selection process works in Ireland really.
- 57:41I think they definitely have an A standard and AB standard, and
- 57:43if you hit the B standard they might send you.
- 57:47So, so, so in terms of GB in Northern Ireland, it's only
- 57:52George Mills that is in the like, you know, in the quota or
- 57:57he's run the standard like was it 13 O 13 O one?
- 58:01Yeah. That's a really.
- 58:03He run he run 1246 for it. Yeah.
- 58:07And then for Ireland, Brian Fay and Andrew Coskaran are both,
- 58:12yeah, their yeah, their quota position is 36 and 38.
- 58:17So they're both just inside the 42 capped field based on ranking
- 58:23points. OK, so yeah, maybe that's why he
- 58:25don't know. But yeah, like, will I go
- 58:28through my race now? Yeah, I reckon so.
- 58:30Tell us about like your whole day experience being at
- 58:34Nationals and mixing it with these fellas.
- 58:36So I got up in the morning and it just under 30 minute shake
- 58:39out just to shake the legs. And then it was a busy day in my
- 58:44household because my sister was in an all Ireland final with
- 58:47Mead. So for anyone who doesn't know,
- 58:49that was in like Ireland's like main 82,000 Cedar Stadium.
- 58:54So it was like the pinnacle of like basically her like
- 58:57football, Gaelic football. And so that was on at 4:15 and
- 59:02then my race was on at 25 to 6. So like I literally come 4:00.
- 59:07I just turned off my phone and I didn't want to know about it
- 59:09because I get really into her games, so it's good that I
- 59:13couldn't be there, but all my pardon.
- 59:17What sort of crowd did they? Get I think there was just under
- 59:2050,000 that it which is pretty good.
- 59:23And so, yeah, all my family went to that.
- 59:27I was, I was solo, so my running coach picked me up and brought
- 59:32me in. So we went in early to watch
- 59:34some of the events, but I just brought a camping chair with me
- 59:37and it just put the feet up on it and chilled.
- 59:39And then two hours before the race I am.
- 59:42I took my bicarb which seemed to have worked and my warm up go
- 59:46on. Which ones that?
- 59:48Is that the where you mix the two packets?
- 59:50I forget the name of it. Yeah, fly carp or something.
- 59:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it actually tasted more
- 59:55tolerable this time. Like I remember the first time I
- 59:57took it, I was like, I'm not actually able to take this.
- 1:00:00I was gagging and all, but I went down grand there and then,
- 1:00:05yeah. So took that two hours before
- 1:00:07then there was a 20 minute call room before the race and I sort
- 1:00:11of got caught out with that in the Cork event.
- 1:00:13So I normally start my warm up like an hour before.
- 1:00:16So for this race I started an hour and 20 minutes before.
- 1:00:19And because in the call room you can't really do anything, you're
- 1:00:21just sitting down looking at other lads.
- 1:00:23So yeah, done my 15 minute warm up.
- 1:00:27Then I'd done a few minutes, I think it was 2 by two-minute
- 1:00:30threshold. And actually during this, I'd
- 1:00:33done my first threshold and I was like sort of pushing a
- 1:00:36little bit and my watch was reading like 340 per kilometer.
- 1:00:40And I was like, this cannot be right.
- 1:00:42Like I am sort of like, like this does not feel like 340.
- 1:00:45And then then I turned around and went back again to do the
- 1:00:50second Rep. And it was like at 2:50.
- 1:00:52So I was like, oh, the satellite mustn't have gotten right.
- 1:00:55So like just technology be aware.
- 1:00:58But like, I felt good. So yeah, then got the spikes on,
- 1:01:03went into the call room, like the car room of sort of like
- 1:01:07you're gone. I just, so do you think that
- 1:01:09will just be something you do as standard as part of your warm
- 1:01:12up? Like I see it getting more and
- 1:01:13more popular, like a bit of a like a flush before like a like
- 1:01:17a track race or like before like A5 or 10K like road race.
- 1:01:22Like do you find it helpful to sort of prime your prime
- 1:01:25yourself in that you sort of hit the race feeling more, albeit
- 1:01:28that this was done what now before?
- 1:01:30So I've only started doing it since I came home and I feel
- 1:01:33like it really does prime you. It sort of gets you like in that
- 1:01:37flow, like your body is like okay, like it's time to sort of
- 1:01:41move fast if you get me. So I feel like it does get the
- 1:01:45body like primed because it is like a two to three minute
- 1:01:48effort. So it's sort of like wires
- 1:01:50astride could be like for a couple of seconds.
- 1:01:53So I feel like it really does get the body primed and like
- 1:01:56ready to go and it doesn't take anything out of you either.
- 1:01:59So yeah, I've been. I feel like it has worked for me
- 1:02:01so far. If you if you weren't in the
- 1:02:04cool room as early, when would you normally do it?
- 1:02:07Like half an hour before or. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:11Yeah. Well, saying like I'd say I got
- 1:02:14to do the strides or that threshold bit around like 35 to
- 1:02:1740 minutes before. Like by the time you do your
- 1:02:20jog, a few of them dynamic stretches and all that sort of
- 1:02:23stuff. Then I do the threshold bit, jog
- 1:02:27back and like sort of get all my stuff ready, like get a little
- 1:02:30drink, take a little a gel and then I do another few strides
- 1:02:36and then it's really it's go time.
- 1:02:39Sorry to take you back, but I've just remembered that you were
- 1:02:42like quite ill in the weekly and not, weren't you?
- 1:02:44So at what point did you start feeling like good again?
- 1:02:47So yeah, I was wrote off Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday I sort
- 1:02:55of started coming around, still had a sore throat.
- 1:02:59And Wednesday I sort of done my like last sort of half session.
- 1:03:03Like I felt well enough to do a session.
- 1:03:05So I don't like 10 minutes of threshold and then AK at like my
- 1:03:09predicted 5K pace and I could feel like I was coming around.
- 1:03:14And then Friday I was like, I'd say I was like 90% sun Saturday
- 1:03:20I was like 95% and then Sunday like I was like no sort throat.
- 1:03:24I'd like time to perfection really.
- 1:03:26Like I felt like the illness was like long gone.
- 1:03:28Like I felt good like 100%. Um, so yeah, then call room,
- 1:03:34you're just sitting down for 20 minutes looking at like, like it
- 1:03:38was real. Like imposter syndrome.
- 1:03:40Like Ephraim G'day, Coke athlete, like Andrew Kosker, New
- 1:03:44Balance athlete, like Brian Faye, Cormac Dalton, like all
- 1:03:47these boys that are like 13 mid guys and them.
- 1:03:51Then there's me. We've done YouTube Diaries on
- 1:03:54two of them. Yeah, like it's crazy to be like
- 1:03:57in the same race as these guys. And I was talking to a lad and
- 1:04:03he'd be around the same level as me and he's like, so what's the
- 1:04:05plan? And I was like, sit at the back
- 1:04:08and hold on for your life. And he was like, he was like, so
- 1:04:11you're not going to take it out in a 60?
- 1:04:13And I was like, man, I can't even run a 60.
- 1:04:16And all the lads are just, they're like laughing and that's
- 1:04:20good. So yeah, they bring it into the
- 1:04:23track. You line up and like for the
- 1:04:26first like 2 laps, Ephraim G'day is on the rail to my left and
- 1:04:30like Andrew Koster and is like just in front of me.
- 1:04:33I'm like, you see these guys like on YouTube and in Diamond
- 1:04:36leagues and like then you're like running with them.
- 1:04:40It was like, like what? What the hell?
- 1:04:43It was like, it was just crazy to like be.
- 1:04:45I was, I was watched. I watched it when I got up this
- 1:04:48morning because you could rewatch the stream back.
- 1:04:50And then that was one of the first things I noticed.
- 1:04:52Like you were next to that good day for like the first few laps.
- 1:04:56Yeah, you're doing nothing wrong.
- 1:04:58Because it was like 70s or something to start with, wasn't
- 1:05:01it? And I was thinking.
- 1:05:02You must have so much like doubt, like why?
- 1:05:06Why am I next to him? Like what am I doing wrong?
- 1:05:08Exactly, exactly. I'm like, am I meant to be here?
- 1:05:10Like what is the pace? But then it's, it's good that
- 1:05:13they have like the clocks at every 200.
- 1:05:16So like, you know, you know that you're not like pushing it too
- 1:05:20hard. And I think the first K went
- 1:05:23through and like 255. So I knew I sort of like where I
- 1:05:26should be. Then we went through 3K in 845.
- 1:05:33So and like at this stage there were sort of like 2 races.
- 1:05:37So there was like a group of let's say 10, and then there was
- 1:05:41another group. I was in that second group and
- 1:05:43there was like a sort of a big gap.
- 1:05:45So just running my own race. And then, yeah, I just hanged
- 1:05:50on, hung on to the back of this, this guy from Cork who ended up
- 1:05:55running 1424. He dropped me.
- 1:05:59I think it was like 600 to 800. And yeah, I was just literally
- 1:06:03just sure, 800, the race is nearly done.
- 1:06:05So you're just basically pushing as hard as you can.
- 1:06:08So I'm not sure what I closed or anything like that, but 1430,
- 1:06:12like 3 second PB. Like I was sort of sad in a way
- 1:06:17I didn't get under that 1430 mark.
- 1:06:19But if you told me like last week or the start of the day
- 1:06:22that I'd run 1430, like I would have beat your hand off for it.
- 1:06:25So yeah, like I'm fitter than what I've ever have been off
- 1:06:31like, like this little bit of training, like I've done three
- 1:06:33track sessions. So like I'm sort of in a good
- 1:06:36place going into cross country. And so yeah, it was a great
- 1:06:39experience. Like the crowd there was
- 1:06:41incredible. And it was sort of, it was funny
- 1:06:43that the guy in front of me, his name was Owen as well.
- 1:06:46So everyone was like, go on Owen.
- 1:06:48And I was like, I don't if they're cheering for me or him.
- 1:06:51So yeah. But it was, it was so cool, such
- 1:06:53a good experience. Sounds like the perfect race
- 1:06:55really. Like in terms of, I think you
- 1:06:57were sort of talking like 255 might be the sort of pace.
- 1:07:00So it's sort of set you up nicely and you're like, what?
- 1:07:02You must have closed a little bit quicker than that, right?
- 1:07:055 fives 25 like 1435. So you must have kicked home a
- 1:07:08bit. Yeah, I probably did pick it up
- 1:07:10a little bit, but like nothing like the lads close in 55, like
- 1:07:14ideally you'd like to close in a low 60 because that means you've
- 1:07:17sort of time to profession. But look, I really, really can't
- 1:07:20complain. But that's that's the end of my
- 1:07:23track season really. And the bicarb and and
- 1:07:27everything like that. Happy with.
- 1:07:29Yeah, that's that. Well, obviously.
- 1:07:31Yeah, yeah, everything to like I sort of done everything I could
- 1:07:34like outside of the race. Like I feel like my tack is in
- 1:07:37the race. Like there was I think I was
- 1:07:39third in the group and your man started to pull away who was
- 1:07:43leading the group and I sort of went around the two lads.
- 1:07:46So like I sort of like as well as I could of run the races like
- 1:07:49I run the best race I could basically and that.
- 1:07:53Well, did you, your coach have any reflections or you guys chat
- 1:07:58on the way home? Yeah, like he was happy.
- 1:08:01Like that's where he thought I was between that 1440 and 1430
- 1:08:05and to be on the higher end of it, like I really can't
- 1:08:08complain. And with the week that was in
- 1:08:09it, like it really was sort of up in the air.
- 1:08:11Like, fair enough, I was over it.
- 1:08:12But like sometimes, like, it probably worked in my favor, to
- 1:08:15be honest. Like I was super fresh.
- 1:08:16Like I three days off running, so I probably was super fresh.
- 1:08:19Like I know Andy Buchanan got sick and lead up to his world,
- 1:08:22his Australian record in the marathon.
- 1:08:25So it probably worked in my favor as well-being honest, but
- 1:08:29no like pretty happy with the result.
- 1:08:32Like I'm sort of like where I where I thought I was.
- 1:08:34Crazy. Yeah, me and Dean, because we,
- 1:08:39we met for lunch today in the city.
- 1:08:41So we were chatting and they said it's like obscene that
- 1:08:46you've literally had 11-12 weeks training and you've ran A3 KPB
- 1:08:50and A5 KPB. Yeah.
- 1:08:52But like that's like, I feel like when you get injured, it's
- 1:08:55just like when you get injured, you can't always come back
- 1:08:58stronger. Like your body's had that break.
- 1:08:59Like I was 11 weeks off running. So I feel like when you do come
- 1:09:03back, you come back so much fresher and like stronger and
- 1:09:07like you've got hunger and like you get it back so quick as
- 1:09:11well. Like fair enough.
- 1:09:12Like it's pretty demoralizing when you get injured.
- 1:09:13And ideally like I should have took a break to prevented myself
- 1:09:17getting injury injured. So like if I had two weeks off
- 1:09:19on my own accord, rather than 11 weeks off, being like being
- 1:09:22forced to take 11 weeks off, like that's ideally what you
- 1:09:25want. Um, so yeah, look after, I think
- 1:09:29I've another race in two weeks and then I have like my local
- 1:09:33race the week after that and then I'll take a week off
- 1:09:36running. I might run like every like
- 1:09:38third day or something like that, but total deload.
- 1:09:41And then I'll start picking it up again for like the cross
- 1:09:43country season. And so like, that's the plan at
- 1:09:46the moment. But yeah, again, just keep fit.
- 1:09:49It's like the consistency like is so so so important.
- 1:09:52And what's in a couple of weeks? What's coming up?
- 1:09:55There's a 10 Miller so 16 kilometers around the Phoenix
- 1:09:58Park again and it's like there's this like Irish Life race series
- 1:10:04in the lead up to. So Irish Life are like the big
- 1:10:08sponsor for the Dublin Marathon. So like they've got this like
- 1:10:11race series leading up to the Dublin Marathon and the Dublin
- 1:10:15Marathon is then or Ginnie Mac. When is the Dublin Marathon?
- 1:10:19And it's coming up pretty soon. Was the Five Mile you did part
- 1:10:22of that series or? I think that was separate.
- 1:10:27Dublin Marathon is on the end of October, so it's sort of like
- 1:10:30leads up into it. So yeah, I've got onto that one.
- 1:10:35And then yeah, just my local 5, Ki said.
- 1:10:37I just run that because the local 1.
- 1:10:40But yeah, I know pretty happy about how like it was the best
- 1:10:42case scenario to be honest. Run a PB, you can't really
- 1:10:45complain. And also getting just getting
- 1:10:48into that race, like I saw the results for the B race and that
- 1:10:52would have been a little bit like Maragami.
- 1:10:54Again, you would have had to have done all the work and not
- 1:10:57had the benefit of the competition around you.
- 1:10:59Whereas getting into that a race, like I know it was like at
- 1:11:02the pointy end, pretty outrageous, but like it wasn't
- 1:11:06like you, you weren't, you weren't close to last in that
- 1:11:08race. Like it was, it was ideal, I
- 1:11:10think, wasn't it? Yeah, and I always said, like,
- 1:11:13I'd rather come last in the A race than win the B race.
- 1:11:16As bad as it sounds like you're always going to get dragged
- 1:11:19along to a faster time in a faster race.
- 1:11:21And like, that's the race I want to be in.
- 1:11:23Like you want to be in with them big guys with the pros.
- 1:11:27And so, yeah, no, pretty happy with how it went and.
- 1:11:31Oscar and Brian Faye be like, off to altitude or something
- 1:11:34now, do you know? I'm not too sure what's the
- 1:11:39story with them now because I'd say they probably all they'll
- 1:11:44head up to Hoyos, you know that Melbourne track club, probably
- 1:11:47because probably they might do a Diamond League or something to
- 1:11:50keep them fresh. But yeah, they probably woke up
- 1:11:51to Hoyos in Spain. Where is he?
- 1:11:56Women's 800 meter Alex Neil won in two O 4.
- 1:12:01Sarah Healy came second in two O 4 as a Sprint finish like dip
- 1:12:06for the line and Maeve O'Neill was second and two or four as
- 1:12:09well. So just milliseconds and
- 1:12:11separating them three again. Sarah Healy pair of M11 track
- 1:12:14club where Keely Hodgkinson, she dropped out in the distance and
- 1:12:19I'd say she's like to be honest, it's not her, it's not her
- 1:12:21distance like 800. She's a 1500 meter girl.
- 1:12:24So I'd say she's pretty happy with that time.
- 1:12:27In the men's 800, Mark English won in 148, Keen Mcphillips came
- 1:12:33second in 149 and Andrew Thompson came third in 149.93.
- 1:12:40So Mark English is sort of like the old Stallworth, like he's
- 1:12:42been around for ages and Keen Mcphillips is like the young gun
- 1:12:46coming up. So yeah, they were sort of like
- 1:12:48guaranteed like 1 twos. Mate, have I got this right and
- 1:12:51that the commentator said that Mark English, he's just won his
- 1:12:5610th year in a row. Yeah, yeah, he's unbelievable.
- 1:13:00He's been around for so, so long.
- 1:13:02He's got a couple of European indoor medals as well.
- 1:13:04He could have came third in European indoors a couple of
- 1:13:06times. So he's like pretty legit.
- 1:13:08And he's only setting PBS this year, like he said, 400 PB this
- 1:13:12year or 800 PB this year. So like he'd be getting on on
- 1:13:15his own still PBN, which is good.
- 1:13:17In the women's 1500, Laura Nicholson won in 413, Zoe Toland
- 1:13:24came second in 4:15 and then Nieve Carr came third in 416.
- 1:13:31And then the last race of the night was the men's. 1500 was
- 1:13:35probably is probably the most stacked race to be honest.
- 1:13:41Ryan's man Kyle Doyle won it in 353.
- 1:13:46Andrew Koskin backed up like so I was going for my cooldown and
- 1:13:50Andrew was going back out to like sort of like, I don't know
- 1:13:53whether it was a cooldown or a warm up because there's like
- 1:13:56only like a couple of hours in between the two races.
- 1:13:59He came second in 353.8 and then Nick Griggs, the young lad from
- 1:14:05Open Tyrone in Ireland ran 353.9.
- 1:14:09So again it was a dip for the line.
- 1:14:11Cottle Doyle just had that little bit more.
- 1:14:13I'd say Andrew Costa Green like probably was a little tiny bit
- 1:14:17tired from the 5K. But yeah, like again, like
- 1:14:21they're all like a couple of years ago in Ireland you'd have
- 1:14:23no like top. You might have one or two top
- 1:14:26athletes like in all these races.
- 1:14:28They're all like really like pushing like the world standards
- 1:14:32and all that sort of stuff. So it's really Irish athletics
- 1:14:35is in such a good place at the moment.
- 1:14:36It's cool. You think if Costco had taken
- 1:14:39bicarb pre the 5000 would they have had to double dose for this
- 1:14:43or would that one dose of Dunham?
- 1:14:46Oh, that's a good question. You know, I'm not too sure
- 1:14:52because the that would have been so I took mine at like 4:15.
- 1:14:58I really, really don't know. He might have had to double dose
- 1:15:01because he would have been flooded even though it wasn't
- 1:15:04that like fast time wise, like it was a jog at the start.
- 1:15:08Let's be real. We could have stuck with them,
- 1:15:10but it's just the last like 800 meters, 600 meters.
- 1:15:15They run so fast, like they make up so much time.
- 1:15:18And so, yeah, Savage running. That mark.
- 1:15:21Is. Mark English is 32 for anyone
- 1:15:25wondering. You said he was getting getting
- 1:15:27on, so yeah, 32. Pretty pretty good for an old
- 1:15:30timer. An old dog.
- 1:15:32And yeah, that's the Irish national champs.
- 1:15:35Big weekend of athletics, wasn't it?
- 1:15:37Yeah, all the national champs are on.
- 1:15:39And also the state champs were on in the half marathon in
- 1:15:42Perth, which were won by yours truly, the Menzies in 6743 in,
- 1:15:49as we spoke about at the start of the show, obscene weather
- 1:15:53conditions. So I did say to Dean earlier,
- 1:15:56Owen, I don't know how I felt when a scene that his time was 5
- 1:16:00seconds slower than my PB. And then if I was like, thank
- 1:16:04God it wasn't 6 seconds quicker or what the hell, He's just ran
- 1:16:08that in that store. That's the time I ran a
- 1:16:10maragami. The exact time to the second,
- 1:16:12Sir. So on a packing flat course in
- 1:16:16Japan, Dean equaled that on the footpath in a storm in Perth.
- 1:16:24To rub salt into the wounds, he then reminded me of the workout
- 1:16:27that he'd done in Bunbury Half Marathon and ran 6730.
- 1:16:31Or something anyway. Flexing.
- 1:16:37Not like that. This is what the state champs do
- 1:16:41second. Second was training partner Max
- 1:16:46Mon in 6825 and 3rd Jacob Howard in 7115.
- 1:16:53And the women's was Lauren French winning in one hour 2329
- 1:16:58seconds, second Jess Reynolds in one hour 2412 seconds and 3rd
- 1:17:04Mazie Bird in one hour 2416 seconds.
- 1:17:07So whilst we're here, do you want to give us a bit of a race
- 1:17:10recap, Dean? Yeah.
- 1:17:12So yeah, sorry. Ryan, were you on the bike
- 1:17:17pacing him? Good question.
- 1:17:20Is it legal? This time legal basically.
- 1:17:22Yeah, the weather was enough to put me off and keep me in bed.
- 1:17:25Fair enough. When he messaged, he messaged
- 1:17:30the night before looking for an out.
- 1:17:32I just left it. Yes, he's basically like asking
- 1:17:37me to explain the weather forecast to him and so for why I
- 1:17:42didn't have to come out. So I thought I'd leave it in the
- 1:17:43hope that he might, you know, break the wind on the way out,
- 1:17:48but not to be. I was, to be honest, I was
- 1:17:51hoping that RAF wouldn't be there because I knew that if RAF
- 1:17:54was, it would make me look bad. He was there, but he was, he
- 1:17:58was. I saw him under a bridge, under
- 1:18:01a bath shelter and then he he was out on course giving us a
- 1:18:07cheer, which is very good of him.
- 1:18:09I think he tooted me from in his car at one point, though I don't
- 1:18:11remember that because it was it was pretty wet.
- 1:18:14But yeah, I think as we mentioned at the top, the race
- 1:18:18nearly got called off because of bad weather or more just the the
- 1:18:22threat of lightning, I think was potentially going to meant that
- 1:18:27it was going to be postponed. But Max messaged us earlier in
- 1:18:31the morning just to say, hey, heads up, it's looking like it's
- 1:18:33going to switch from 8:00 AM to 8:30, which was good.
- 1:18:37So it meant I didn't have to rush because I was late as I
- 1:18:40sometimes am getting to the start delayed when I took my
- 1:18:44caffeine, which is probably a good thing.
- 1:18:46And then I was contemplating not taking it all if it wasn't going
- 1:18:48to happen. Like there was a real chance, I
- 1:18:51think before the race started that it was going to be called
- 1:18:54off, like probably, I don't know, 50-50 around that sort of
- 1:18:59chance based on the vibe when I got there.
- 1:19:01Like they were contemplating what they were desperately came
- 1:19:03to make the race go ahead. Like there was a whole, a whole
- 1:19:07heap of people still turned out for it even despite the terrible
- 1:19:10weather. But I think the Marathon Club
- 1:19:12are pretty sensible. Like they were aware that safety
- 1:19:16comes first, which was just really good.
- 1:19:19Like it's a like in terms of the WA Marathon Club, when we had
- 1:19:23COVID here in in Perth or even across Australia, like every
- 1:19:28state sort of went into lockdown.
- 1:19:29And so apart from like essential services, you couldn't cross
- 1:19:32state borders. And a lot of private companies
- 1:19:34that ran events sort of pulled their events.
- 1:19:37Whereas the Marathon Club, which yeah, is largely sort of run by
- 1:19:40volunteers, managed to put on a heap of great events throughout
- 1:19:43COVID. And like, so back in 2020, this
- 1:19:46race was like really well attended because there sort of
- 1:19:50wasn't any other events for people to be able to travel to,
- 1:19:53which is often what takes up. Like, for example, the Sunshine
- 1:19:56Coast race, which we might recap quickly soon, is a race I've
- 1:19:59gone to in the past instead of racing this because it tends to
- 1:20:01fall in the same weekend. So yeah, Marathon Club did a
- 1:20:04great job of still getting out there.
- 1:20:06They had all the volunteers on course and all the Marshalls.
- 1:20:08And basically they said to us, we'll start at 8:30.
- 1:20:11And then at 8:20 they said, hey, there's going to be some bad
- 1:20:14weather at 8:30, we might just get it started now.
- 1:20:17So we all huddled out to the start line and there's some
- 1:20:21people still sort of doing warmups because I thought it was
- 1:20:23maybe 830. And then maybe by about 8:25, we
- 1:20:25all sort of got underway and then within 5.
- 1:20:29It was like maybe, to borrow a phrase from my own, like lashing
- 1:20:32rain, like it was pretty heavy. And I don't know if I think it
- 1:20:35might have been hailing. And I had a cap on thanks to Bix
- 1:20:40and Max didn't. And Max is having to shield the,
- 1:20:43it's sort of shield his face from like the the hail or get
- 1:20:47like getting into his eyes, like it was sort of stinging a bit.
- 1:20:49And the way the course works is it basically goes along
- 1:20:52footpath, the 10 1/2 K's and turns around and the prevailing
- 1:20:55wind was like sort of 40 to 50K's an hour sort of into your
- 1:21:00face or it's coming from the West.
- 1:21:01And so basically the first K and a half wasn't into the wind.
- 1:21:04But once you do that, you sort of ran parallel with it and then
- 1:21:07you sort of turned into a headwind for the next, I don't
- 1:21:10know, 8:00-ish sort of case. So it's pretty, pretty average
- 1:21:13sort of start to the race. And it was like the wind gusts
- 1:21:15were pretty bad. It was like one of the most
- 1:21:17stormy parts. But yeah, Max and I did that
- 1:21:20sort of first section together. Then we sort of maybe took it in
- 1:21:23terms of doing like stints of effort and then he sort of got
- 1:21:28away from me maybe a little bit going up over the Narrows.
- 1:21:32We weren't really focused much at all on times, just because it
- 1:21:35was sort of, yeah, time sort of went out the window and then
- 1:21:39I've got away a little bit just over the Narrows heading up
- 1:21:44towards Altuan Brewery. I was.
- 1:21:47Going to say, did you deliberately let him go because
- 1:21:50you were like in tune with heart rates or?
- 1:21:53Yeah, I just felt the effort was pretty high, Yeah.
- 1:21:55And I was running a bit to heart rate.
- 1:21:56But the problem with the heart rate monitor is when it gets
- 1:21:59like super wet, it's sort of shits itself a bit.
- 1:22:02So you can't completely rely on it.
- 1:22:04But it felt like the, he was sort of making a bit of effort,
- 1:22:07like an effort. So I was sort of a bit conscious
- 1:22:09that like, was getting a bit difficult.
- 1:22:12So I sort of, yeah, just kept him a bit close.
- 1:22:15And then we sort of caught back up to each other and then I
- 1:22:19wasn't feeling too bad, you know, along that flat section
- 1:22:21around past the, the brewery along Matilda Bay Rd.
- 1:22:25I got a little bit of a gap. And then we just do this,
- 1:22:28U-turn, it's just a hairpin. U-turn at the end.
- 1:22:31And that's when I fell over. I wore the called the, the Evo
- 1:22:34ones. And the sole on them is like,
- 1:22:37it's like a, it's like flat plastic.
- 1:22:40Like the shoes are so light. And I was just so hell bent on
- 1:22:42because they were light. I just, they were the only ones
- 1:22:45I packed the night before. And yeah, they were, they were a
- 1:22:49terrible shoe choice really with the benefit of hindsight, Like
- 1:22:52they're they're not. I was slipping and sliding on
- 1:22:54some of the light slipperier parts of the path, like wherever
- 1:22:57if anything was painted or it's like a tiled section at one
- 1:23:00point that would just. That would in hindsight not the
- 1:23:04right shoe. So at any point in the race, was
- 1:23:06the wind on your back? Like, did you have a nice little
- 1:23:08boost? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:09So basically you get around that U-turn, so 10 1/2 K's and then
- 1:23:15probably 80% of the return, 70% of the return is like it's got a
- 1:23:19tailwind. So you could just run, run at
- 1:23:22effort. Then I was sort of pretty sore,
- 1:23:25like sort of mechanically struggling a bit, a little bit
- 1:23:28in the in the shoes. And but yeah, I was sort of just
- 1:23:32not trying to manage the gap a little bit to to Max and yeah,
- 1:23:37sort of just held on from there I suppose.
- 1:23:41But yeah. Any surges or anything or just
- 1:23:44like one steady effort? When we got back to the bridge,
- 1:23:49like back to the going over the narrows, he was sort of not too
- 1:23:53far behind me. And so I sort of made a little
- 1:23:55bit of a a press over the bridge to try and get a bit of a gap.
- 1:24:00And that seemed to to work a bit.
- 1:24:02And then, yeah, I just sort of just running, I don't know,
- 1:24:05running tempo, I suppose to just sort of make sure I wasn't.
- 1:24:09Yeah, I didn't over commit and didn't run out of run out of
- 1:24:13gas, but sort of didn't want to sort of make it look like there
- 1:24:16was a gap that it could be close to make it a Sprint finish
- 1:24:19because I'd probably lose it. So yeah, that was sort of how
- 1:24:22how I ran it sort of difficult sort of times went out the door
- 1:24:25and there was pretty, pretty difficult weather wise, but it
- 1:24:27was still good just to get a hit out in.
- 1:24:29How does it feel to race a race like that, where it's like
- 1:24:32purely just racing for the win rather than like anything to do
- 1:24:35with time? Like it was still good, it was
- 1:24:38still fun, I still enjoyed it. Like we still went out and had a
- 1:24:41hit out and like racing's like it's not all about just running
- 1:24:45a time, but it's just sort of just difficult to contextualize.
- 1:24:49Like at one point I think you'd the race was almost being called
- 1:24:52off and so you're sort of half committed to the effort.
- 1:24:55And so but then you're like, I'm probably going to have to go
- 1:24:57home and run on the treadmill for two hours.
- 1:24:58So you don't want to do that. So you're sort of willing
- 1:25:00yourself enough to sort of do what you need to do, but you're
- 1:25:03sort of they're not the mornings that you get super hyped for.
- 1:25:06I don't think like it's a bit harder to get completely psyched
- 1:25:09up for. I think part of the motivation
- 1:25:12to do it say last year, like I was raced this race last year
- 1:25:15and it was just a stunning morning.
- 1:25:16Like Perth and winter on a regular morning is like you can
- 1:25:20get a quite still crisp morning and it's just stunning to run
- 1:25:25in. And we had some of them earlier
- 1:25:27in the week, which is pretty unlucky that this was just a
- 1:25:30terrible front of weather that we had.
- 1:25:31So yeah, sort of like, I think you sort of just chalk those
- 1:25:34down to it's like, you know, when you do like a really hard
- 1:25:36workout and you're like, if I can survive this workout, I can
- 1:25:39survive, you know, then it hopefully it makes the other
- 1:25:41ones a bit easier. So yeah, glad I did it and yeah,
- 1:25:45hopefully get fitter from it. So correct me if I'm wrong,
- 1:25:48that's now rain and state. 10K champ and a half marathon champ.
- 1:25:53Yeah, I'll have to do the Perth Marathon in October and get
- 1:25:57this. Yeah, you beat me to it.
- 1:26:00You see him where I was going with that one.
- 1:26:04Yeah. No, I think the plan will be to
- 1:26:07maybe do. There's a Melbourne marathon.
- 1:26:11Melbourne Running Festival and the Perth Running Festival are
- 1:26:13on the same day in the early to mid-october so I'll run
- 1:26:18something, get one of those. I'm just not sure which one yet.
- 1:26:21But probably 1/2 marathon. Maybe either one of them.
- 1:26:23You seem to be racing a lot more than what you normally do.
- 1:26:28Yeah, I feel like if you're racing a marathon, you're sort
- 1:26:30of a bit stuck to just racing a marathon, whereas I feel like
- 1:26:32you can race a bit more right at the minute.
- 1:26:35And obviously Melbourne would be like, if you're going to run
- 1:26:39fast, like Melbourne would be, probably be the one you'd go to.
- 1:26:42Yeah, exactly. Like Perth would be an
- 1:26:43opportunity to race people and then Melbourne would be an
- 1:26:47opportunity to maybe run a PB. So people want, I'm not sure
- 1:26:50which one yet, maybe see how I go over the next few weeks and.
- 1:26:56Is that end of? October, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:58So a bit of a bit of time and then after that I think it would
- 1:27:01be sort of head down for Valencia prep.
- 1:27:04Valencia. Any inroads with the flights
- 1:27:07there? No, you'll get me in trouble
- 1:27:09with house. I've not booked anything.
- 1:27:11Ryan wait, I know it's months away.
- 1:27:14He'll book the flights on like December 1st.
- 1:27:16You. Know it.
- 1:27:21That's. Even that's calling it a bit
- 1:27:23early, to be honest. Maybe we should just keep asking
- 1:27:28this question. We can we can see when it when
- 1:27:30it gets done. Well, maybe get hold on.
- 1:27:33You sound like my wife. Yeah.
- 1:27:38Well, well done on your win anyway.
- 1:27:40Thanks. Moving on to another domestic
- 1:27:44half marathon was the Sunshine Coast Half Marathon which was
- 1:27:49worn on the men's side of things by Andy Buchanan in 6213. 2nd is
- 1:27:56Sydney Marathon Elite Field member Liam Adams in 6427 and
- 1:28:033rd is Sebastian Usher in 6650. Before we break that down, I'll
- 1:28:08do the women's. First is Tara Palm in 7354,
- 1:28:14second Rebecca Lowe 7422 and 3rd Charlotte Wilson in 7448.
- 1:28:21So any thoughts on that? Andy Sit?
- 1:28:25Yeah. And Liam Adams going around his
- 1:28:27back as well. That's his first race in first
- 1:28:29good race in ages. I don't know what the Adams
- 1:28:32would have been like. What age Liam Adams I.
- 1:28:35Think he's 38? So he's really, really, really
- 1:28:37old. Washed now.
- 1:28:45What would the PB be for Liam Adams there?
- 1:28:47What is his payday? Yeah, at a guess, 62 minutes.
- 1:28:53Yeah, OK, I got some context on this.
- 1:28:57It was $2000 for the win and $1000 if respectively for the
- 1:29:03men you broke 63, which Andy did, and for the women if you
- 1:29:08broke 70, which Tara did not, but she still would have got 2
- 1:29:13grand for the win. This course like this half
- 1:29:17marathon, so it's often been the Australian half marathon chance
- 1:29:21and it's it's really good Like it's it has one hill in it that
- 1:29:25you go up at the start and then you go out in One Direction, do
- 1:29:30a wide U-turn off like a full like like 4 lane Rd. and then
- 1:29:35head back. You come back over that back
- 1:29:39over that hill and and then it's basically just flat or like
- 1:29:43complete like pancake flat all the way out to the, you know, 7
- 1:29:47KS and then U-turn back again another wide U-turn.
- 1:29:51But the course is the course is quite good and it's often like
- 1:29:54whenever it was sort of the national half marathon champs,
- 1:29:57you, you got some really good fields.
- 1:29:59Like, yeah, I think I remember one year like, but the, the, the
- 1:30:04women's all comers record was broken.
- 1:30:06And I think it was like maybe by Lisa Whiteman and I think Sinead
- 1:30:10and Diver and Ellie Pashley were all in the race and it was all
- 1:30:14like really close. And the men's race was really
- 1:30:16hotly contested as well. Like there's it's a really good
- 1:30:19event and the event company that runs it do a very good job.
- 1:30:23So I could see them trying to like reposition it a little bit
- 1:30:26because it's sort of getting so competitive now with Launceston
- 1:30:29and Gold Coast and the like. So yeah, hopefully it hopefully
- 1:30:33people show up for it because it's a good course and it's men.
- 1:30:37Sunshine Coast is like such a nice part of the world as well.
- 1:30:40Be a nice one to do, like as a holla attack a holiday on to.
- 1:30:44Unpopular opinion, the Sunshine Coast is nicer than the Gold
- 1:30:48Coast. I agree, yeah.
- 1:30:50Yeah, stunning. Even Nusat is just gorgeous.
- 1:30:53Yeah. How much further north than Gold
- 1:30:56Coast in Brisbane is it if you drove, say?
- 1:30:59Would it be an hour, Hour and a half?
- 1:31:01An hour, Yeah. Yeah, it's pretty equal.
- 1:31:04That's not close. Yeah, Yeah, I get the sense that
- 1:31:07they're trying to push this as well.
- 1:31:09One, because of the the time bonuses here.
- 1:31:12I get the sense that they're trying to like incentivize
- 1:31:14faster people to come and kind of build the reputation that
- 1:31:17way. And two, because as seen on the
- 1:31:19social media, they were kind of posting a lot about the results
- 1:31:23and always mentioning like about the winners running fast times
- 1:31:27and breaking the course record. So I don't know, something adds
- 1:31:31up there. But to cover the marathon
- 1:31:34results off, because there was a marathon on as part of the same
- 1:31:38events, would that have been two laps of the half course or like
- 1:31:41an extended version? Dean.
- 1:31:43It used to be two laps of the half.
- 1:31:44I'm not sure if that's what it was for this year, but yeah,
- 1:31:47they used to do remember one year I did it, there was a,
- 1:31:51there was like a, you know, when they you often do like a brother
- 1:31:53sister race, like an exchange. So the winner of one race can
- 1:31:56get an entry into. And so they did that with like
- 1:31:59a, a Japanese race. And the Japanese runner came
- 1:32:03over and he was doing the marathon and he just happened to
- 1:32:06come into the group that we were all in.
- 1:32:09We're running, I don't know, let's say 663067 minute light
- 1:32:13around that sort of pace maybe. And he just jumped on the, we
- 1:32:17were into a bit of a headwind towards the end.
- 1:32:20And he's got a whole marathon to do.
- 1:32:21So he's got another whole lap. And he just said, hop in,
- 1:32:24fellas, I got you. And we all just sat behind him
- 1:32:26and he just carted us until he and then said goodbye to us when
- 1:32:29he had another lap of the marathon to do.
- 1:32:32And he was just just chilling, just just just jogging on a day
- 1:32:36out. He won by a long way.
- 1:32:38But yeah, so. Was he of like negative split or
- 1:32:41even split I? Think it was probably.
- 1:32:43I think he was even. I think he ran like.
- 1:32:45Jeez. Yeah, 213 or something, But
- 1:32:48yeah, so like, yeah, it's a good, it's a good course.
- 1:32:52I think particularly for the half, maybe it used to get a
- 1:32:55little bit warm by the back end of the marathon.
- 1:32:59The men's was won by Ryan Gregson in 214 O 5 second, Steve
- 1:33:03McKenna 21834 and 3rd Kishi after the Waco in 2/22/11.
- 1:33:10So again well I'll do the women's result before this.
- 1:33:13So Sarah Short won the women's race in 24112.
- 1:33:17Cassie Fein was second in two 4144 and Siobhan Sefton in two
- 1:33:234432. So prize money for this was 4
- 1:33:29grand for the win and then A5 grand bonus if you broke 2:15
- 1:33:34for the men, which Ryan Gregson did, and 2:30 for the women,
- 1:33:40which Sarah Short did not. So a nice 9 grand payday there
- 1:33:45for Ryan Gregson. And I hypothesized that a chunk
- 1:33:49of that might be going Brett Robinson's way, seen as he paste
- 1:33:52them give them a tow for 34K there.
- 1:33:55Yeah, it's a pretty solid run. Lights, well, not solo, but you
- 1:33:58know. Yeah, what's his PB212213?
- 1:34:03I think so, no, that's pretty good conversion on a course like
- 1:34:07that, albeit like a home course, definitely makes it a bit
- 1:34:09easier. But I feel like it is a new
- 1:34:11course, so like it's probably a lot faster than the last one.
- 1:34:15Yeah, probably cut that hill out, maybe.
- 1:34:19Yeah, last result comes from the USA in a race called Beach, the
- 1:34:23Beacon 10K road race. So for the women here, this was
- 1:34:27won in somewhat dramatic fashion by Izzy Back Doyle who Dean
- 1:34:32interviewed 2 weeks ago. She ran 3125 to fend off like a
- 1:34:39massive group of like very talented, I think mainly
- 1:34:42American athletes. So there was as Maresh and Leith
- 1:34:47second in 3131, Fiona O'Keefe third in 3136.
- 1:34:52And then, yeah, the list kind of goes on.
- 1:34:54There's a blanket finish there. Sarah Hall is down in 10th and
- 1:34:573232. So I don't say Izzy would have
- 1:35:01been surprised that she won that race, but she definitely
- 1:35:04wouldn't have been like going over there thinking, oh, I'm a
- 1:35:06shoo in for this. And you can kind of tell by like
- 1:35:09the the finish line photo that she's like overjoyed with it.
- 1:35:13And I think I'd done some digging and perhaps found out
- 1:35:17why she might be so overjoyed as well because the prize money for
- 1:35:21this one was 10,000 U.S. dollars.
- 1:35:24So lovely payday for that It's. About half a million Aussie
- 1:35:29dollars at the current exchange. The interesting point here, like
- 1:35:35lots of the athletes choosing to do Sydney Marathon over Worlds
- 1:35:39because of like the potential payday and all sort of stuff
- 1:35:42like that. Whereas Izzy's leant towards the
- 1:35:45World Athletics with the prestige side of things, and
- 1:35:48then she's gone and raced the 10K in America and got herself
- 1:35:51paid anyway, so she'll probably be feeling pretty good right
- 1:35:54now. Pretty justified, you can do
- 1:35:56both. In the men's race, there's a few
- 1:35:59familiar names as well here. So Conor Mance won in 2726 from
- 1:36:04Patrick Kiprock 2736 and Tedesse Gabra Selassie in 2743.
- 1:36:11Also in that field was noticeable names.
- 1:36:14Paddy Diva is the 10,000 meter British athlete in fourth.
- 1:36:18I think the guy in fifth, Peter Lynch, he's the Irish marathon
- 1:36:23potentially record holder. Yeah, Peter Lynch, Irish
- 1:36:26marathon record holder, came fifth in 2755.
- 1:36:29Then he bet Clayton Young in eight in 2758.
- 1:36:33So 3 seconds between them in 10th Joe Clacker in 2811 and
- 1:36:38then 10th. Fun fact about the Latin 10th
- 1:36:41Fergal Curtain. Another laugh from Ireland.
- 1:36:44He ran 2837 in the under. Let me get this right.
- 1:36:49Under 30 in all Ireland he dipped me on the line.
- 1:36:53Under 13 cross country, all Ireland he dipped me on the
- 1:36:56line. So I got second and he got
- 1:36:58first. No.
- 1:37:00Boo. But he's training with that
- 1:37:03Canadian Rory Linklater now. He was in his most recent
- 1:37:07YouTube video, actually. So he's a PM athlete, same Peter
- 1:37:10Lynch PM athlete. But it's just incredible to see
- 1:37:12Irish lads like sort of tossing with the best up there in
- 1:37:16America now. I was wondering why there would
- 1:37:18be Irish lads racing in America, but these are guys that are
- 1:37:22potentially based over there that just happened to be.
- 1:37:26They would went to college over there and now they're after just
- 1:37:28like getting picked up by a brand.
- 1:37:30And the guy who's in charge of that training group, well,
- 1:37:32especially Peter Lynch is Alistair Craig, which is like
- 1:37:37Irish running royalty as well. So makes sense.
- 1:37:41Yeah, that group does unusually well.
- 1:37:45I'm not going to throw around any accusations, but they're
- 1:37:48they're pretty, they're pretty good at running.
- 1:37:51But yeah, it's a. Good race.
- 1:37:54That caps off a very long segment of running results.
- 1:37:58But we've also recapped Dean and Owen's race, race weeks in
- 1:38:01there. So moving on to YouTube Diaries,
- 1:38:06I think we all shared, well, Owen shared this with us earlier
- 1:38:09in the week. So don't know who wants to take
- 1:38:11the lead on this. I'll take it, I'll take it.
- 1:38:14So this just popped up on my YouTube feed.
- 1:38:18It was a YouTube channel called Long run Lactic and it was Josh
- 1:38:23Hoey. And I feel like Josh Hoey.
- 1:38:25He's like he's sort of after coming out of nowhere in the
- 1:38:27last little while and he was doing a workout on this track
- 1:38:32and I was like, what the hell? And I was like the YouTube like
- 1:38:35titles like Josh Hoey. Does it work out on like Josh
- 1:38:38Hoey farm or something like this?
- 1:38:40And I've done more digging and during COVID everything was
- 1:38:44locked down so his father built him a track on his farm.
- 1:38:49So a full 400 meter tire and track.
- 1:38:51Imagine having that in your back garden.
- 1:38:53So him and his brothers and the workout was 3 by 400 and it was
- 1:38:59off like 6 minutes rest in between them.
- 1:39:02And I think the splits, the reps were the first one was in 48,
- 1:39:10second one wasn't 47 and the third one wasn't 49.
- 1:39:14He was like pretty pissed off, but like that is incredible.
- 1:39:19And his brother would drag him around to like 200 and then peel
- 1:39:22off. And it was just, yeah, like,
- 1:39:25it's only 1200 meters worth of work.
- 1:39:29But that is so fast. And but I just hope so
- 1:39:33interesting that he's his own like track because in the video
- 1:39:36it started off and like he'd like these two nice Jeeps and
- 1:39:39they were like sort of like half on the outside lanes.
- 1:39:42And I was like, where the hell is this place?
- 1:39:44Nowhere in the world would you get to drive like a freaking
- 1:39:47Jeep onto half a track. Like, just you're not allowed.
- 1:39:51So yeah, such a. That's so cool.
- 1:39:55Yeah, I was trying to do some digging on it as well, because I
- 1:39:58was like, what the hell? And then it was an equestrian
- 1:40:02field. So like part of the work, they
- 1:40:05have to like, level it out first.
- 1:40:07So I mean, they clearly live on like a fat plot of land, and
- 1:40:10they've got a lot of money. And apparently the father's been
- 1:40:15quoted in saying it cost north of $1,000,000.
- 1:40:18No exact figure, but that's how much it cost them to put it in
- 1:40:22there. Yeah, like a strip, I think a
- 1:40:2420M strip of that like turn and track depending on like how much
- 1:40:28like it could cost like 20 grand.
- 1:40:30Yeah it's 8 lanes as well. Like it's full on legit.
- 1:40:33Crazy. Imagine having that in your back
- 1:40:35garden. So did you did you see the news
- 1:40:38the other week where it was like Josh Howie post paste his
- 1:40:41brother Jonah to like a 14498 or something like this that was on
- 1:40:47that track. They held their like legit meet
- 1:40:49there called like the Farmers Classic and like loads of
- 1:40:52athletes came and raced on it. In the backyard.
- 1:40:56Yeah. Crazy.
- 1:40:57He must be the only person with a personal track.
- 1:40:59In the world. So apparently, you know, you
- 1:41:01said like he's kind of came out of nowhere and stuff recently.
- 1:41:03Apparently he attributes like his rise to the built it in
- 1:41:08COVID and he said The amount of workouts we've done on that
- 1:41:11during COVID, like I've just got so fit.
- 1:41:16Nah. Unreal.
- 1:41:19And lastly, then Double Trouble. We've got a few more news items,
- 1:41:23but we'll just have to hold them for put them in the legacy list
- 1:41:26for next week. Double Trouble Now I've got 1.
- 1:41:31I don't know if any of you have one and you want to go first or
- 1:41:34I can leave this out and you can follow.
- 1:41:36You go first. OK.
- 1:41:38So these have been few and far between recently because I
- 1:41:40haven't been running and I haven't been on Strava.
- 1:41:42So I haven't really been seeing much that like it's kind of
- 1:41:45rattled me or got me on edge. But last week during the week, I
- 1:41:49was going for a walk down the river one evening, must have
- 1:41:52been about 9:00 PM. And Dean can attest that Perth
- 1:41:55has been pretty cold at 9:00 PM. And this guy is running down
- 1:42:01there in pair of splitties, pair of gloves, a beanie and no
- 1:42:07T-shirt. Harry Manner.
- 1:42:13Yeah, chest one. Yeah, he wasn't a bro, he was.
- 1:42:18He looked like he was built like a runner anyway and he was
- 1:42:20travelling like he was doing a steady run, like 4 minute case
- 1:42:23or something pretty easily. And I was just like why?
- 1:42:26Why are you shirtless? It's cold, but why have you got
- 1:42:29gloves and a hat on as well? Yeah, makes no sense.
- 1:42:32Does not. Say, that one just rattled me
- 1:42:34and I got my phone out straight away and put it in the notes.
- 1:42:37Double trouble. I heard Dean around that time.
- 1:42:44Running home from work. And I don't want anyone digging
- 1:42:50out pictures of like me topless because they'll be in 30° heat.
- 1:42:55Like I'm just getting there before you get there.
- 1:42:58Don't do it in the cold. We're actually just trying to
- 1:43:02get pictures of you at the Barber with the sweaty back and
- 1:43:05the. Oh, it was Speaking of which
- 1:43:08like that. We did have some funny replies
- 1:43:10to that, didn't we? So thanks to everyone who sent
- 1:43:13them in. I reckon Susie's one where she
- 1:43:16ran to a wedding like must take. The win there, there was
- 1:43:21actually a lot of really good ones, yeah, a lot of relatable
- 1:43:26stories, I think. Yeah, Ollie from my run club
- 1:43:29back home ran to Tesco to get his passport photo done.
- 1:43:32So with a no doubt been sat in the in the little stool with a
- 1:43:35sweaty back as well. There's the feeling and boys,
- 1:43:42have you got anything else before I wrap it up?
- 1:43:46No, Dean's yawning here in front of us.
- 1:43:47He's ready for bed. I'm I'm a lot older.
- 1:43:51I need my beauty sleep. Guys, I'm going to get a pizza
- 1:43:54for dinner later and I cannot wait.
- 1:43:56I've been trying to eat so clean leading up to the race and all
- 1:44:00my mates have been getting pizza and all this and I'm like no no
- 1:44:03no I'll hold off. So I'm getting a pizza tonight
- 1:44:05for dinner. Can't wait.
- 1:44:06I was going to say, you know, you know, I'm not photo on your
- 1:44:09story in the island top. Oh, that's me.
- 1:44:12That's the county I'm from, Yeah.
- 1:44:13Oh yeah, that your your your jaw lines looking very Josh care ask
- 1:44:18there. I just love a long.
- 1:44:20Way to go. I'm still carrying a few extra
- 1:44:22pounds of sugar but slowly will. Surely it should fall off?
- 1:44:27All right, then, well, if you've if you've stayed this far,
- 1:44:29hopefully you've enjoyed the massive results round up and our
- 1:44:33takes. So just to remind you, jump into
- 1:44:36the Strava group and we'll, we'll see what's been happening
- 1:44:39over the this week when we get to next week's episode and
