- 0:01Barry, what's uh what's the transition
- 0:02been like coming back to Auburn?
- 0:06>> Well, it's it's been smoother than other
- 0:09places I've been simply because there's
- 0:10been some familiarity with uh with
- 0:13Auburn, but um for the most part,
- 0:15everybody's been very welcoming and um
- 0:19everything's going, excuse me,
- 0:20everything's going well.
- 0:22>> What kind of went into the decision to
- 0:24come back and to join Galich's staff?
- 0:26Well, I think I've mentioned this
- 0:28before, but the decision was already
- 0:30made a long time ago. It was just it was
- 0:32just all about, you know, an opportunity
- 0:34being presented.
- 0:37>> Yeah. I mean, again, I've uh already
- 0:40always been very fond of Auburn and um
- 0:44I'm happy about being back. Very
- 0:45excited.
- 0:47>> Having a guy like Jeremiah Cob return,
- 0:49you know, especially with all the guys
- 0:50you guys brought in at running back, how
- 0:52good of a leader, you know, you want him
- 0:54to be this year? Well, honestly, I just
- 0:56want Jeremiah to be himself. And um if
- 1:00he can do that, you know, and continue
- 1:02to to get better um as a player, I think
- 1:06that's all we can ask for.
- 1:09>> What are some of the things about
- 1:10Jeremiah that makes him so good in your
- 1:12thousand yard rush in the SEC last year?
- 1:16>> Again, you know, the biggest thing I've
- 1:18seen just going back and watching film
- 1:20is just growth, right? And I, you know,
- 1:22just talking to not just Jeremiah, but
- 1:25other people that's been involved with
- 1:26the program, you know, that's attributed
- 1:28to all his hard work, but but overall, I
- 1:31think um he's very motivated to be the
- 1:34best version of himself. And you can see
- 1:36that, you know, each and every day, you
- 1:38know, just in the way that he goes about
- 1:40his work.
- 1:41>> Kind of that tempo style offense you
- 1:43guys run, you know, how are you guys
- 1:45going to like balance the reps, you
- 1:46know, a lot of running backs you do have
- 1:47this year?
- 1:48>> Well, I think they dictate that. We
- 1:50don't, you know, obviously we're putting
- 1:52in a new system. So, my job is to be
- 1:55very open-minded. Um, meet every
- 1:58individual where they are and find ways
- 2:00to elevate them into becoming the best
- 2:03version of themselves.
- 2:06>> Larry, when you're out recruiting, what
- 2:07do you look for in a running back, both
- 2:09on the field and off the field?
- 2:11>> Well, for me,
- 2:13you know, what makes you you? What makes
- 2:16you special? what elite traits do you
- 2:18have that truly that we can add to our
- 2:21room to help elevate our room and also
- 2:23elevate the productivity of our offense?
- 2:26And so I start there, you know, um so
- 2:30the skill set and then obviously
- 2:33um the character piece is big, but but
- 2:36at the end of the day um you know, we're
- 2:39trying to find guys that are truly elite
- 2:43at what they do, right? And and again,
- 2:45that comes in a lot of different ways,
- 2:47and I don't like to box that. You know,
- 2:50I want every individual to be the best
- 2:52version of themselves, but also be in
- 2:55position to help us grow.
- 2:57>> How would you describe yourself as a
- 2:59recruiter?
- 3:01>> Well, the more things change, the more
- 3:04things stay the same, right? I know we
- 3:06have the the portal, we have revenue
- 3:10sharing, we have NIL, but I think
- 3:13everything starts with relationships and
- 3:15that's where it all begins and and
- 3:17that's where I try to make sure that um
- 3:20I have a real foundation with in terms
- 3:23of just not just with the kid but with
- 3:25the family as well. And then from there
- 3:27it's about because it goes both ways,
- 3:29right?
- 3:30um just as much as we want them, we have
- 3:34to make sure that they want to be here.
- 3:36So I think honesty and and and building
- 3:39trust with the family and the prospect
- 3:41is very very critical. So relationship
- 3:45building trust and then
- 3:48truly
- 3:50whatever I say to them make sure that
- 3:52once they come on campus that they
- 3:54experience that and I think with that um
- 3:58it allows their trust to grow, their
- 4:00belief to grow and then they start to
- 4:03visualize themselves being a part of the
- 4:05program and I think it kind of goes from
- 4:06there. For you, the portal is kind of a
- 4:09I mean, for everyone, it's a stressful
- 4:11time, but you go out and just kind of
- 4:13pick up a bunch of guys. What was that
- 4:15like for you having Jeremiah, but going
- 4:18to add Bryce, adding Tay, adding Nikai,
- 4:21having got four different guys that were
- 4:24starting running backs last year,
- 4:26>> right? Well, I don't think there'll ever
- 4:27be a time really at any position in this
- 4:29program where we're not trying to
- 4:31upgrade the skill set within the
- 4:34program, within our room. And so this
- 4:37was no exception, right? And we were
- 4:39looking for guys who had experience that
- 4:42can bring some real value to the room.
- 4:44And so as we were watching film and
- 4:47evaluating different prospects, that was
- 4:50one of the things that were high on the
- 4:52list.
- 4:53>> We talked to coach Nolas recently and he
- 4:56said that this offense is going to run
- 4:58the heck out of the ball. Um, is that
- 5:00with that in mind, was that part of the
- 5:02reason why you had to go out into the
- 5:03portal and pick up so many guys as well?
- 5:06You say you can, you know, have that
- 5:07balance in offense.
- 5:08>> Well, um, I'm trying to refrain from
- 5:12talking about numbers, but when I got
- 5:14here and the dust settle, it was three
- 5:17guys left in the room, which was Cobb,
- 5:20Omar, and Alvin. And so, we had to, no
- 5:23matter what, add to the room. So, that's
- 5:25exactly what we did. We were just
- 5:27fortunate enough um as we got into the
- 5:30portal to find guys to kind of fit the
- 5:32profile that we were looking for. So
- 5:35when you can get experience
- 5:37but also production, right, and then
- 5:41some talent to go with that, um it makes
- 5:43for a pretty good day.
- 5:46>> When the offense has a quarterback like
- 5:48Byron Brown who can also run, you know,
- 5:50how much do you think that could help
- 5:51the running backs? again what a defense
- 5:53can't just hone in on the running backs.
- 5:55They got to keep an eye on the
- 5:56quarterback potentially running the ball
- 5:58too.
- 5:58>> Oh, absolutely. I I think it all goes
- 6:00together, right? When you look at
- 6:03offense in general in terms of the way
- 6:06that we operate, spacing, um tempo, I
- 6:10think that's one dimension. Then you add
- 6:14a quarterback that can truly run the
- 6:16ball. That's another dimension. And then
- 6:18you add a group of guys that are
- 6:20productive in in in the running back
- 6:22room. That's something else that you
- 6:24add. And then that's not to even talk
- 6:26about the skill set that we have in the
- 6:28wide receiver and tight end room. So I
- 6:30think it all goes together, but but I
- 6:32think we'll build something um that as
- 6:35we go forward that people will will
- 6:38appreciate and enjoy.
- 6:40>> With Bryson specifically, what did you
- 6:42see in his skill set that made him such
- 6:45an attractive target to add to the role?
- 6:48Well, outside of being productive, you
- 6:51know, he's more of a downhill guy. He's
- 6:52an experienced guy, and the offense that
- 6:55they ran um at his former school is
- 6:59somewhat similar to what we do here. So,
- 7:02it's not just the experience, just the
- 7:04famili familiarity with what we do
- 7:06schematically as well.
- 7:09>> Talked earlier about coming back to
- 7:10Auburn. What all What all has been
- 7:13different? What all has been new to you
- 7:14coming back here?
- 7:15>> I don't see it any different. um mainly
- 7:18because you come to Auburn for one
- 7:20reason and that's to play for a national
- 7:21championship. That's the standard.
- 7:23That's the expectation. And so what it
- 7:26does is it just continues to force you
- 7:29to have urgency to get it right a lot
- 7:32sooner than later to put yourself in
- 7:34position to meet the expectation of the
- 7:36fan base and the community who's been
- 7:38very supportive.
- 7:40those young guys, Omar and Alvin.
- 7:43>> What have you kind of seen just from
- 7:44looking at what they did last year in
- 7:46practice stuff and then just getting to
- 7:48know them a little bit as well?
- 7:49>> So, I hadn't seen a whole lot of them
- 7:52cuz we've been back on we've been out on
- 7:53the road. Um, but in terms of just their
- 7:56mindset, you know, I think they both had
- 8:00different experiences this year. Omar
- 8:02got to play just a little bit, but it
- 8:05was enough to motivate him and for him
- 8:07to want to be better, to put himself in
- 8:09position um for us to count on him. On
- 8:12the other hand, you know, Alvin, not as
- 8:14much in terms of playing. So, he's super
- 8:16motivated as well just to grow and also
- 8:19earn the trust of of of the coaches so
- 8:22he can earn playing time as well.
- 8:25>> Those other guys you brought in, Aai and
- 8:27Tay, how would you kind of describe them
- 8:28and how they can help you as well?
- 8:31Well, Nikai obviously very familiar with
- 8:36the system. Um, have some comfort there.
- 8:39So, that in itself is a huge benefit to
- 8:42the room um to what we're trying to do
- 8:44offensively in terms of just installing
- 8:47and and then, you know, and he's had
- 8:50enough productivity. He's proven
- 8:53himself.
- 8:55I think this is a great opportunity for
- 8:57him to be on this stage to show that
- 8:59he's just as capable of doing it on his
- 9:01level. So, um, and then you look at Tay
- 9:06likewise, right? Um, a guy who had some
- 9:09success who wants a different stage and
- 9:13you know, he's been granted that
- 9:14opportunity. Now, it's about working.
- 9:16But I I will say this again, right? Um,
- 9:19I think they're all are working
- 9:20extremely hard.
- 9:23uh one to learn the system, two as they
- 9:28learn the system to build trust with us
- 9:30as coaches and then as we get into
- 9:32spring ball to position themselves to
- 9:34earn playing time and and I do like the
- 9:37attitude and the spirit of the room from
- 9:39that regard. I think that's that's been
- 9:41pretty cool. And then I like the fact
- 9:43that they they like each other, you
- 9:45know, they uh the spirit in the room is
- 9:48is is is healthy. Um and and and that's
- 9:51that's been good. But you know, when the
- 9:54rubber meets the road, they dictate who
- 9:56plays um 100%, you know, by what they
- 9:59put on film. And I want them to feel
- 10:03that it's truly a great situation in
- 10:06terms of them having a fire a fair
- 10:08opportunity to prove that they're worthy
- 10:11of being out there on the field. So, um,
- 10:14the skill set as it their skill set as
- 10:18this start to unfold in terms of who's
- 10:20being productive and and and and putting
- 10:23themselves in position to to play. Um,
- 10:26you know, we we will kind of sort
- 10:28through that and figure out what helps
- 10:30us where, how, and when and then use it
- 10:32accordingly.
- 10:34>> Back to Lamar, he's a guy that
- 10:36reclassified to get a year a year early.
- 10:38What do you think we can grow into? And
- 10:40you know, that little bit of experience
- 10:42he got last year, how big is that for a
- 10:44guy that's still so young?
- 10:45>> Yeah, I think it's the sky's is the
- 10:47limit for Omar simply because one, just
- 10:51his mindset. He's super motivated. He
- 10:54loves football.
- 10:56Um he loves waking up every single day,
- 10:59walking into this building trying to
- 11:00find ways to truly become the best
- 11:02version of himself. And I think um when
- 11:07you find someone like that who's truly
- 11:10motivated, the sky is truly the limit.
- 11:13>> As far as pass protection goes at
- 11:15running back, you know, what does that
- 11:17kind of look like to you as a coach and
- 11:18how do you try to implement that into
- 11:20that round? Is it a feeling that gets
- 11:21overlooked, you know, sometimes for
- 11:23running back?
- 11:24>> Well, first of all, it's my personal
- 11:26belief that
- 11:28everybody is capable of blocking, right?
- 11:31passport protection.
- 11:33It's truly a choice. And so you either
- 11:36choose to do it or choose not to, but I
- 11:40believe everybody can. And I will always
- 11:43approach it that way. It's my job to
- 11:45coach the base fundamentals of it. It's
- 11:48my job to to give them the confidence
- 11:51and the courage to go and and try to be
- 11:54not just good at it, but great at it.
- 11:56but also it's something that we do in
- 11:58this offense
- 12:00>> that's gonna be expected not just to
- 12:02pass pro but be really good at it and so
- 12:05my approach would be no different you
- 12:07know again being able to teach it
- 12:10holding them to a standard but also
- 12:12making sure that I'm giving them the
- 12:14courage and the confidence
- 12:16in this phase of uh you know the runback
- 12:20play to be really really good at it
- 12:21we'll take tremendous pride in doing it
- 12:23>> I know coach goal and his offense say
- 12:25like go pretty fast. You know what? As
- 12:28far as you know, you said like the
- 12:29running backs themselves will dictate
- 12:31who plays and who doesn't, but you're
- 12:32thinking about trying to keep guys fresh
- 12:34and and whatnot. You know, what what
- 12:35does that rotation kind of look like
- 12:37knowing that, hey, we're going to be
- 12:38moving a million miles an hour?
- 12:40>> Well, that's a great question because
- 12:41your guess is as good as mine right now.
- 12:43You know, obviously we have not gotten
- 12:45into to spring ball to give them an
- 12:48opportunity um to earn the right to to
- 12:50to do that and and define the rotation
- 12:52as well. But we are looking forward to
- 12:55it. You know, they um and they're
- 12:58looking forward to it as well. So, that
- 13:00remains to be seen, but very very
- 13:02excited about what the future holds in
- 13:04that regard.
- 13:05>> Sounds like all these running backs are
- 13:06really just excited to play together and
- 13:08get onto the field together as a coach.
- 13:10You know, how how excited does that make
- 13:12you know you've got seems like a pretty
- 13:14hungry group of of running backs there?
- 13:16>> It is. But also, you know, you you hear
- 13:20this a lot yourself. Harvard is about
- 13:22family. And so as we build the makeup of
- 13:25that room, the Auburn family, the
- 13:28brotherhood is going to be front and
- 13:30center. Um we've had a lot of a lot of
- 13:33talented backs um come through the
- 13:36Auburn running back room. So there's a
- 13:38standard that we got to play to and meet
- 13:40um which they've been, you know,
- 13:42basically introduced to and told and
- 13:45explain to, you know, just the history
- 13:47of of what has come before them. Now,
- 13:50you know, it's my job as a gatekeeper to
- 13:52make sure that, you know, we we live up
- 13:54to that standard and put ourselves in
- 13:56position to add to that legacy.
- 14:09>> I'm good.
- 14:12>> Thank y'all.
- 14:13>> Hey, buddy. How are we?
- 14:16>> Yeah.
- 14:19We got one. We got one.
- 14:22>> Okay. All right.
- 14:23>> Silver Fox.
- 14:24>> Yeah.
- 14:25>> All right.
